The notion of correlation immune functions has been introduced by Siegenthaler (1984) in symmetric cryptography in the framework of stream ciphers. At the conference CRYPTO’91 by Camion et al., it has been pointed out that this notion existed in statistics and combinatorics. It has recently been highlighted that such functions also play an important role in a new framework related to side-channel attack counter-measures. Since then, the interest in correlation immune Boolean functions has been renewed, and new challenges regarding these functions have appeared. Specifically, low Hamming weight correlation immune functions have been selected as useful for counter-measures to side-channel attacks. Despite their importance, the literature is not abundant in this research direction. Two very interesting articles in which such correlation immune functions were nicely explored, given this novel use of them. Carlet initiated the first one in 2013, and the second one is due to Carlet and Chen (2018). This paper deals with correlation immune Boolean functions aiming to produce more candidates of those processing low Hamming weights. We shall focus on correlation immune Boolean functions with Hamming weights power of 2 (which offer a flexibility to control the correlation immunity aspects) and present several methods of designing them. Some design methods are efficient and could be employed to derive such functions. Consequently, given two positive integers $n$ and $m$ , we derive new effective constructions of correlation immune Boolean functions with Hamming weight power of 2. Furthermore, an upper bound on the correlation immunity of the newly constructed $n$ -variable Boolean functions with Hamming weight $2^{m}$ was determined for $n-m\ge 0$. Besides, exact values and lower bounds on the maximum correlation immunity of those functions are explored and discussed, mainly when the values of $n$ and $m$ are very close. This paper studies properties of binary runlength-limited sequences with additional constraints on their Hamming weight and/or their number of runs of identical symbols. An algebraic and a probabilistic (entropic) characterization of the exponential growth rate of the number of such sequences, i.e., their information capacity, are obtained by using the methods of multivariate analytic combinatorics, and properties of the capacity as a function of its parameters are stated. The second-order term in the asymptotic expansion of the rate of these sequences is also given, and the typical values of the relevant quantities are derived. Several applications of the results are illustrated, including bounds on codes for weight-preserving and run-preserving channels (e.g., the run-preserving insertion-deletion channel), a sphere-packing bound for channels with sparse error patterns, and the asymptotics of constant-weight sub-block constrained sequences. In addition, the asymptotics of a closely related notion— $q$ -ary sequences with fixed Manhattan weight—is briefly discussed, and an application in coding for molecular timing channels is illustrated. The basic goal of threshold group testing is to identify up to $d$ defective items among a population of $n$ items, where $d$ is usually much smaller than $n$. The outcome of a test on a subset of items is positive if the subset has at least $u$ defective items, negative if it has up to $\ell $ defective items, where $0 \leq \ell < u$ , and arbitrary otherwise. This is called threshold group testing. The parameter $g = u - \ell - 1$ is called the gap. In this paper, we focus on the case $g > 0$ , i.e., threshold group testing with a gap. Note that the results presented here are also applicable to the case $g = 0$ ; however, the results are not as efficient as those in related work. Currently, a few reported studies have investigated test designs and decoding algorithms for identifying defective items. Most of the previous studies have not been feasible because there are numerous constraints on their problem settings or the decoding complexities of their proposed schemes are relatively large. Therefore, it is compulsory to reduce the number of tests as well as the decoding complexity, i.e., the time for identifying the defective items, for achieving practical schemes. The work presented here makes five contributions. The first is a more accurate theorem for a non-adaptive algorithm for threshold group testing proposed by Chen and Fu. The second is an improvement in the construction of disjunct matrices, which are the main tools for tackling (threshold) group testing and other tasks such as constructing cover-free families or learning hidden graphs. Specifically, we present a better exact upper bound on the number of tests for disjunct matrices compared with that in related work. The third and fourth contributions are a reduced exact upper bound on the number of tests and a reduced asymptotic bound on the decoding time for identifying defective items in a noisy setting on test outcomes. We suggest a new optimization technique for minimizing the sum $\sum _{i=1}^n g_i(x)$ ∑ i = 1 n g i (x) of $n$ n non-convex real functions that satisfy a property that we call piecewise log-Lipschitz. This is by forging links between techniques in computational geometry, combinatorics and convex optimization. As an example application, we provide the first constant-factor approximation algorithms whose running-times are polynomial in $n$ n for the fundamental problem of Points-to-Lines alignment: Given $n$ n points $p_1,\ldots,p_n$ p 1 ,... , p n and $n$ n lines $\ell _1,\ldots,\ell _n$ ℓ 1 ,... , ℓ n on the plane and $z>0$ z > 0 , compute the matching $\pi :[n]\to [n]$ π : [ n ] → [ n ] and alignment (rotation matrix $R$ R and translation vector $t$ t ) that minimize the sum of euclidean distances $\sum _{i=1}^n \mathrm{dist}(Rp_i-t,\ell _{\pi (i)})^z$ ∑ i = 1 n dist (R p i - t , ℓ π (i)) z between each point to its corresponding line. This problem is non-trivial even if $z=1$ z = 1 and the matching $\pi$ π is given. If $\pi$ π is given, our algorithms run in $O(n^3)$ O (n 3) time, and even near-linear in $n$ n using core-sets that support: streaming, dynamic, and distributed parallel computations in poly-logarithmic update time. Generalizations for handling e.g., outliers or pseudo-distances such as $M$ M -estimators for the problem are also provided. Experimental results and open source code show that our algorithms improve existing heuristics also in practice. The problem of repairing linear codes and, in particular, Reed Solomon (RS) codes has attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to their extreme importance to distributed storage systems. In this problem, a failed code symbol (node) needs to be repaired by downloading as little information as possible from a subset of the remaining nodes. By now, there are examples of RS codes that have efficient repair schemes, and some even attain the cut-set bound. However, these schemes fall short in several aspects; they require a considerable field extension degree. They do not provide any nontrivial repair scheme over prime fields. Lastly, they are all linear repairs, i.e., the computed functions are linear over the base field. Motivated by these and by a question raised by Guruswami and Wootters, 2017, on the power of nonlinear repair schemes, we study the problem of nonlinear repair schemes of RS codes. Our main results are the first nonlinear repair scheme of RS codes with asymptotically optimal repair bandwidth (asymptotically matching the cut-set bound). This is the first example of a nonlinear repair scheme of any code and also the first example that a nonlinear repair scheme can outperform all linear ones. Combinatorial algorithms such as those that arise in graph analysis, modeling of discrete systems, bioinformatics, and chemistry, are often hard to parallelize. The Combinatorial BLAS library implements key computational primitives for rapid development of combinatorial algorithms in distributed-memory systems. During the decade since its first introduction, the Combinatorial BLAS library has evolved and expanded significantly. This article details many of the key technical features of Combinatorial BLAS version 2.0, such as communication avoidance, hierarchical parallelism via in-node multithreading, accelerator support via GPU kernels, generalized semiring support, implementations of key data structures and functions, and scalable distributed I/O operations for human-readable files. Emerging applications of collaborative autonomy, such as multitarget tracking, unknown map exploration, and persistent surveillance, require robots plan paths to navigate an environment while maximizing the information collected via on-board sensors. In this article, we consider such information acquisition tasks but in adversarial environments, where attacks may temporarily disable the robots’ sensors. We propose the first receding horizon algorithm, aiming for robust and adaptive multirobot planning against any number of attacks, which we call Resilient Active Information acquisitioN (RAIN). RAIN calls, in an online fashion, a robust trajectory planning (RTP) subroutine that plans attack-robust control inputs over a look-ahead planning horizon. We quantify RTP’s performance by bounding its suboptimality. We base our theoretical analysis on notions of curvature introduced in combinatorial optimization. We evaluate RAIN in three information acquisition scenarios: multitarget tracking, occupancy grid mapping, and persistent surveillance. The scenarios are simulated in C++ and a unity-based simulator. In all simulations, RAIN runs in real time, and exhibits superior performance against a state-of-the-art baseline information acquisition algorithm, even in the presence of a high number of attacks. We study common randomness generation problems where $n$ players aim to generate same sequences of random coin flips where some subsets of the players share an independent common coin which can be tossed multiple times, and there is a publicly seen blackboard through which the players communicate with each other. We provide a tight representation of the optimal communication rates via linear programming, and more importantly, propose explicit algorithms for the optimal distributed simulation for a wide class of hypergraphs. In particular, the optimal communication rate in complete hypergraphs is still achievable in sparser hypergraphs containing a path-connected cycle-free cluster of topologically connected components.
