Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. This paper presents extensive verification, sensitivity, and application studies for an online substation grounding grid condition monitoring method proposed in a companion paper. The studies are conducted using a realistic substation grounding grid and associated feeder configurations commonly encountered in North America. The verification studies confirm that the proposed method is able to estimate the substation grounding impedances with acceptable accuracy. Main factors impacting measurement accuracy are identified and quantified through sensitivity studies. The findings lead to a guide for the implementation and operation of the proposed method. This paper studies the impact of stochastic load variations on distributed optimal load tracking and allocation (OLTA) problems in cyber-physical DC microgrids (MGs) for transportation electrification. Without load variations, the distributed optimization strategies developed in our earlier work can achieve convergence to global optimal solutions in a multi-objective optimization that balances fair load allocation and power loss reduction. Under persistent stochastic load variations, this paper develops distributed optimal strategies to track time-varying loads under noisy observations and establishes their convergence properties and error bounds. The limiting behavior of the errors characterizes the fundamental impact of the step size on irreducible errors due to conflict between attenuating observation noises and tracking load changes. Optimality conditions and algorithms for selecting the optimal step size are introduced to guide step size selection in practical applications. This paper demonstrates the potential of inverter-based loads to support grid reliability during power system transients thereby enabling reliable integration of renewable energy in power systems. Such loads are referred to in this paper as grid-supportive loads (GSLs). A new GSL model is developed that simulates the transient response capabilities that can be programmed in electronic loads. The model’s design enables it to be easily integrated in widely used commercial power system transient analysis software. Theoretical expressions are derived that explain the workings of the GSL model. The performance, numerical stability, and impact of the GSL model is validated on 9-bus and 2000-bus synthetic power system models using generator tripping and bus fault disturbances. Results on the 2000 bus system show that in the absence of frequency support from wind/solar generation resources, just 20% of loads with grid-supportive capabilities can improve frequency response by up to 2000 MW/0.1 Hz and reduce deviation in frequency at nadir by up to 60% compared to the situation when GSLs are absent. Power system reliability also improves under fault events. In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. This paper addresses the interactions among the control loops of voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) embedded in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems and the impact of these interactions on the performance of individual control loops. Furthermore, this paper proposes a method to design the individual control loops, rather than the interconnected control system, such that the overall system stability is ensured in the presence of interactions. This paper addresses three aspects of the impact of control loop interactions on the overall control system of the VSC including stability, transient response, and steady-state response. To illustrate the impact of interactions on the VSC small-signal stability, stability regions of the interconnected control loops are obtained and compared against those of the various individual control loops. Then, a novel formulation of the VSC stability criterion is presented, and the small-gain theorem is utilized to determine a range of stabilizing gains for the interconnected control system. Moreover, new indices using the infinity norm are introduced to evaluate the impact of interactions on the transient response of the VSC. Finally, the DC gain of a certain set of transfer functions is used to assess the impact of control loops interactions on the set-point tracking capability of the VSC. The introduced indices along with time-domain simulations show that the transient response of the d-axis control loops is not impacted by the interactions, whereas that of the q-axis control loops is significantly impacted by the interactions. As the inverter-based generation replaces the conventional synchronous generators, it may also need to fill in the missing ancillary service support. One of these ancillary services is dynamic reactive power provision and voltage control. This paper analyzes optimal strategy of reactive and active fault-current support of the inverter-based generation leading to fast voltage recovery of the system. For the purpose of the analysis, new ramping active current controller able to emulate different behavior of active current injection is proposed. By optimizing its parameters for different case studies of the system, the conclusions about optimal behavior of the inverter based generation with respect to system parameters and operating conditions are drawn. It is observed that the optimal combination of active and reactive fault-current is the most sensitive to the dynamic load component penetration levels in the system. With the increasing penetration levels, the significance of active fault-current injection increases. The results show that with higher penetration levels of dynamic load component in the heavy load areas, the ramping down of the inverter-based generation active fault-current results in slower voltage recovery of the system. This paper proposed a distributed uniform controlstrategy for parallel bidirectional interlinking converters(BICs) to realize resilient operation of hybrid ac/dc microgrid (HMG). The proposed control strategy can coordinate the control objectives of BICs in different HMG operation modes with a uniform control structure, thus, to eliminate any mode transition detections. In normal condition, the power coordination between ac and dc subgrids can be achieved, while ac or dc voltage regulation can be maintained when main voltage source(MVS) fails in ac or dc subgrid. The coordination between parallel BICs relies on low-bandwidth neighbourhood communication. With the communication planned, accurate power sharing can be achieved. Communication fault ride-through capability is enabled with less power sharing accuracy. The system reliability and resilience of HMG under various fault conditions can be improved by the proposed control strategy. Parallel operation of grid-interactive inverters has been continuously gaining attraction, and their contribution to sustaining the host grid stability has become strongly demanded. This paper investigates and discusses the trends in the most recent interconnection grid codes. Grid codes call for simultaneous requirements for the low-voltage ride-through capabilities of parallel operation of grid-interactive inverters as well as their effective asymmetrical voltage support by advanced active/reactive bi-sequence power provision under unbalanced grid faults. Addressing these demands in an optimized way becomes very challenging. This paper thus proposes a new methodology to simultaneously achieve three main objectives: (1) coordination of the asymmetrical ride-through and voltage support capabilities of parallel-operated inverters, (2) maximizing the utilization of each unit and their collective contribution in boosting the positive-sequence voltage and reduction of the negative sequence voltage subject to the constraints from the inverters and the grid, and (3) minimizing the impact of the support on the active power injections. Although smart home has received wide attention in recent years, numerous scholars focus more on energy optimization strategy than energy dispatch hardware device (named energy router). Meanwhile, this energy router should have several features, i.e., high renewable energy utilization, energy multi-port and low volume. Thus, this paper designs a nine-port energy router regarding smart home and proposes a multimode hierarchical management strategy for this energy router. First, for the multi-port demand of wind, solar, storage and utilization, this paper presents a nine-port energy router to improve the renewable energy consumption and power supply flexibility. In addition, to reduce the volume of the energy router, a non-isolated AC/DC hybrid topology is constructed through embedding the integrated power electronic converters, which achieves the miniaturization of the energy router. In order to improve the renewable energy utilization rate, the decentralized module control is proposed for the components of energy router to provide the voltage and frequency support for system, and realizes the power sharing of distributed generations (DGs). Furthermore, the power exchange control with three-mode switching is proposed to guarantee the global energy flow balance under complex conditions. The paper proposes a control scheme to improve the dynamic response of power systems through the automatic regulators of converter-based Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). In this scheme, both active and reactive power control of DERs are varied to regulate both frequency and voltage, as opposed to current practice where frequency and voltage controllers are decoupled. To assess the proposed control against the current state-of-art, the paper also defines a metric that captures the combined effect of frequency/voltage response at any given bus of the network. Results indicate that the proposed control strategy leads to a significant improvement in the stability and performance of the overall power system. These results are based on a comprehensive case study carried out by employing a modified version of the IEEE 39-bus benchmark system, where a portion of the synchronous machines is substituted by converter-interfaced DERs. In islanded microgrids, distributed generators (DGs) are employed as distributed compensators to improve the power quality on the load side. Due to the access of unbalanced loads, the low-voltage microgrid will naturally exhibit three-phase unbalance, which may cause additional power losses and deteriorate power quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel unbalanced-voltage compensation control method based on the Hopf oscillator, which introduces the negative-sequence voltage and current into the traditional Hopf oscillator to achieve the negative sequence voltage droop characteristics. It can not only realize the negative sequence droop control of a single inverter, but it is also capable to support the reactive power automatic distribution between multi-parallel grid-forming inverters. Compared with the traditional unbalanced voltage compensation method based on filtered negative sequence reactive power, the proposed unbalanced voltage compensation method can slightly improve the dynamic response. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. State-of-charge (SoC) imbalance and bus voltage deviation are two of the main problems in autonomous dc microgrids. Based on this concern, this paper presents an improved dual-quadrant SoC weighted control strategy and a distributed optimization control method to achieve SoC balance, ensuring accurate power-sharing and bus voltage recovery. Firstly, this paper couples the injected/released power with the current SoC and observed average SoC value to weight the droop coefficient, which is based on the charge/discharge mode for the energy storage system. Then a secondary controller is designed based on distributed optimal control to eliminate the bus voltage deviation caused by the line impedance difference. The proposed optimal control method optimizes the average bus voltage to the nominal value and achieve accurate power-sharing by constructing the correlated variables and voltage independent intermediate variables exchanged among bulk energy storage units (ESUs). Since the voltage observer cannot accurately observe the true average bus voltage under the communication delay, the proposed distributed optimal control method without the voltage observer can ensure that the average bus voltage is optimized to the nominal value, thus improving the robustness of the control system. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG)-based control approaches for AC machine drivers have attracted much attention in recent years. The contradiction between the strong motor loading capacity and the small DC voltage fluctuation is disregarded in previous studies. A larger virtual inertia is required to raise the torque gain and drive the motor with heavier loads, thus resulting in greater DC voltage variations. A systematic method is proposed for the optimal design of the virtual inertia for VSG-based motor starting systems to achieve the maximal motor loading capacity and the low DC voltage fluctuation in this paper. Firstly, the relationship between the virtual inertia and the loading capacity is revealed on the basis of the closed-loop analysis. Considering the DC voltage variation, the constraint on the maximal value of the virtual inertia is proposed from the energy-balance perspective despite the unknown contribution of the DC capacitors to the virtual inertia. To fully exploit the energy storage capacity of the DC capacitors and raise the upper limit of the virtual inertia under the same permitted DC voltage variation, a modified DC voltage reference is introduced. This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. A Hybrid AC/DC microgrid (MG) can integrate distributed generation sources and distributed loads on the AC and DC side of the MG by eliminating many unnecessary power conversion devices, which is more flexible and efficient. However, to achieve reliable and economic operation of a hybrid AC/DC MG is challenging due to its complex structure. In this paper, a novel distributed event-triggered hierarchical control strategy is proposed to improve the economic operation of a hybrid AC/DC MG. For the primary control, distributed local controls of AC DGs, DC DGs, and interlinking converters (ICs) are realized by adopting the droop control method. For the secondary control, the distributed economic dispatch, distributed average bus voltage discovery, and distributed proportional power-sharing algorithms are first proposed; then, control objectives of voltage and frequency restoration and economic operation of the hybrid AC/DC MG are realized based upon the developed algorithms. Furthermore, the distributed secondary control is built upon an event-triggered mechanism developed in this paper, which can reduce the communication burden. Microgrid's voltage regulation is of particular importance during both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. Especially, during the islanded mode, when the support from the upstream grid is lost, stable voltage regulation is vital for the reliable operation of critical loads. This paper proposes a robust and data-driven control approach for secondary voltage control of AC microgrids in the presence of uncertainties. To this end, unfalsified adaptive control (UAC) is utilized to select the best stabilizing controller from a set of pre-designed controllers with the minimum knowledge required from the microgrid. In order to achieve the purpose of extending the speed range and reducing power electronics devices for the permanent-magnet linear motor drive system, a half-centralized open-end winding (OEW) topology is studied for rail transit applications in this paper. In this topology, compared with the traditional OEW topology, the number of voltage-source-inverters (VSIs) can be reduced from four to three to drive two OEW movers and all these VSIs share a common dc bus voltage. In order to improve the steady-state performances, a four-vector phase model predictive voltage control (FV-PMPVC) is proposed in this paper. Due to the spatial distribution of phase voltage vector (PVV), an orthometric synthesis principle (OSP) is proposed to calculated the duration time for the vector synthesis, which reduces the computation burden and enhances the robustness. Comparing the existing control method, FV-PMPVC can get similar dynamic performances but better steady-state performances. Additionally, the half-centralized topology using FV-PMPVC can have same speed range while less VSIs are required. The effectiveness of FV-PMPVC is verified by experimental results. This paper presents a reconfigurable dc–dc converter for maximum thermoelectric generator (TEG) energy harvesting in a battery-powered duty-cycling wireless sensor node. The proposed dc–dc converter adopts discontinuous energy harvesting, which operates in single-input dual-output (SIDO) boost, battery-TEG pile-up buck (BTPB), dual-phase buck–boost (DPBB), and battery supplied buck modes with a single shared inductor. Fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process, the converter adopts an adaptive dead-time controller for zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and an adaptive switch size (ASS) with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to maximize efficiency in a wide TEG voltage range. The SIDO boost mode achieves 88.5% and 81.1% peak end-to-end efficiency with maximum and no-load conditions (only charging the battery), respectively. The combination of BTPB and DPBB modes to maximize the TEG power extraction during the battery-powered operation results in up to 44% saving in battery power. Peer-to-peer interconnection of households having on-site batteries, multi-port converters and solar panels to form a multi-port converter-enabled solar DC nano-grid is an emerging approach for providing affordable energy access in rural areas. Battery charge and discharge losses, distribution losses and converter losses are significant problem when operating such nano-grids. This paper presents a centralized control algorithm that can help address the power loss problem. The proposed algorithm uses a new problem formulation where the power loss problem is formulated as a two-stage convex optimization problem. The first stage of the optimization problem is an optimal battery dispatch problem for determining optimal battery charge and discharge currents. The second stage is an optimal current flow problem for determining optimal distribution voltages which corresponds to the optimal battery currents. Simulation results of the nano-grid show that the proposed algorithm can minimize the nano-grid power losses while facilitating the power exchange between the households. The proposed algorithm is suitable for small nano-grids where privacy of households is not a concern. The commutation failure (CF) is the most common fault in line-commutated high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems that may lead to the transient overvoltage in the sending-side system. In the worst condition, the CF may lead to large-scale wind turbine tripping. To resolve this problem, the mathematical relationship between the reactive power consumed by the rectifier and DC voltage, DC current is derived. Then, a transient overvoltage calculation method is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the mechanism of transient overvoltage caused by the CF is analyzed; it is revealed that the reason for three times transient overvoltage is the rapid decrease of the reactive power consumed by the rectifier during the CF and the recovery period from the CF. This paper proposes a constant reactive power control (CRPC) to inhibit transient overvoltage of the sending-side AC system. The proposed CRPC can increase the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, reduce the exchange reactive power between AC and DC systems, and suppress the transient overvoltage. A simulation model in PSCAD serves to verify the proposed CRPC on the transient overvoltage suppression in the situation of different fault types, fault duration, fault severity and short circuit ratio (SCR). This paper proposes a novel inertia-enhanced distributed control method to complement the inertia of microgrids. The rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and the rate of change of voltage (RoCoV) are employed in this paper to quantify the frequency inertia and voltage inertia, respectively. Then, a fully distributed algorithm with constrained changing rates is proposed. By bounding the changing rates of frequency and voltage during the consensus control, the algorithm can address the consensus problem while enhancing the inertia of microgrids. Compared with most inertia control methods, the proposed method can utilize the reserve power of scattered DGs to supply inertia. Besides, it performs better under disturbances and delays than conventional distributed control methods. The stability issues of DC power grids are attracting researchers’ attention, especially with the increasing adoption of power electronic devices and nonlinear loads. Large-signal stability analysis is required to detect and avoid large disturbance and destabilization, which can cause detrimental effects on DC power grids. However, the issue is still unsolved due to the complicated dynamics of large-scale power grids. This paper develops a novel method for estimation of the region of attraction (ROA) with less conservativeness using the Brayton-Moser mixed potential theory. This reliable and robust ROA estimation method provides useful insights into the stable operation of DC power grids. Moreover, this paper reveals the weak correlation between the state variables1 of branch currents and system stability. It makes it possible to reduce computational cost and lessen the curse of dimensionality by separating these state variables. The grid-forming converter is an important unit in the future power system with more inverter-interfaced generators. However, improving its performance is still a key challenge. This paper proposes a generalized architecture of the grid-forming converter from the view of multivariable feedback control. As a result, many of the existing popular control strategies, i.e., droop control, power synchronization control, virtual synchronous generator control, matching control, dispatchable virtual oscillator control, and their improved forms are unified into a multivariable feedback control transfer matrix working on several linear and nonlinear error signals. Meanwhile, unlike the traditional assumptions of decoupling between AC and DC control, active power and reactive power control, the proposed configuration simultaneously takes all of them into consideration, which therefore can provide better performance. As an example, a new multi-input-multi-output-based grid-forming (MIMO-GFM) control is proposed based on the generalized configuration. To cope with the multivariable feedback, an optimal and structured $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ synthesis is used to design the control parameters. The latest developments in dc transformer technology are enabling larger and more complex dc power distribution systems. However, the literature is scarce regarding the investigation and quantification of its impact on the dc grid. Therefore, this paper analyses the impact of the dc transformer location on the system’s characteristics to provide enough information to predict the system performances for future dc grids. To determine the critical resonant frequencies of the system, the power converters outer control loop dynamic are included to provide a better representation in frequency domain, and enable its evaluation for the addition of new equipment to the power distribution network. The proposed solution has an expansible methodology, allowing its application in large systems and easy impedance response assessment. Moreover, the proposed solution is independent of the ac grid backup solutions, allowing the dc power distribution network planning to deal only with the dc variables. The uncoordinated berth allocation of all-electric ships (AES) will impose great challenges on voltage profiles in seaport microgrids. This paper proposes a distributed optimal voltage control and berth allocation strategy to mitigate voltage violations while balancing the benefits between microgrids and AES. The voltage control problem is formulated as a second-order cone program (SOCP) to minimize network power loss, while the berth allocation problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) to minimize total service time. To build the bridge between microgrids and berthed-in AES, the power interaction model at the seaport is proposed. The proposed model introduces a time-cost factor to evaluate the economic cost of service time and also unifies the timescales between voltage control and berth allocation. Considering different system operators and objectives of microgrids and AES, this paper develops an alternating direction of multipliers (ADMM)-based distributed optimization algorithm to solve the problem. The method can help reach the convergence of ADMM in solving models with discrete variables. While much attention was given in the literature to improve the fault ride through (FRT) capability of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) during various faults at the grid side, not much attention was given to investigate and improve the performance of the DFIG-WECS under ferroresonance conditions. This paper investigates the impact of ferroresonance on the overall performance of a DFIG-WECS. The paper also presents a new technique to improve the high voltage ride through capability of the investigated system under such condition. The proposed technique relies on incorporating a superconducting coil within the dc-link of the DFIG grid-side and rotor-side converters. Energy exchange between the coil and the system is controlled through regulating the duty cycle of the dc-chopper interfacing the coil with the dc-link. In this regard, a simple but yet effective proportional-integral (PI) controller is employed to regulate the dc-chopper duty cycle. Parameters of the PI controller are optimized using elephant herding optimization algorithm. The hybrid LCC/VSC cascaded HVDC (HC-HVDC) scheme, in which the LCC is adopted as rectifier, and one LCC in series with multiple paralleled VSC based MMCs is adopted as inverter, combines the advantages of both LCC and VSC-MMC technologies. Presently, a HC-HVDC project is planned to deliver the hydro power from Baihetan to Jiangsu in China. One of the major challenges is to suppress the DC overcurrent issue of VSC-MMCs especially under commutation failure condition of LCC at inverter side. Based on Baihetan-Jiangsu project under construction, the model of HC-HVDC system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. In the system, the rectifier employs a dual 12-pulse LCC, while the inverter adopts a hybrid scheme, i.e., one LCC converter in series with three paralleled VSC-MMC converters. This paper addresses the main cause and feature of the DC overcurrent, then proposes an overcurrent suppression control method for HC-HVDC system based on fuzzy clustering and identification approach. And the system transient performances with the proposed control approach are evaluated under AC fault conditions. The results show that the proposed approach can not only suppress the DC overcurrent following the commutation failure to a certain extent, but also improve the post-fault recovery performance of the overall system. This paper analyzes the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC caused by parametric uncertainty. The unsymmetrical operation is referred to as the condition in which parameters involved in ac power generation are not equal in the phase-legs of the converter. Because existing models in the literature cannot exhibit the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC, new detailed and simplified steady-state models are developed in this paper. In the developed models, the connection between the operation of different phase-legs shows itself when the dc-link impedance is considered. Using the developed models, the parameters that can force the converter to operate in unsymmetrical conditions are identified, and the maximum variation that the converter can tolerate is found. It is shown that even a small parameter variation leads to the leakage of the ac circulating current into the dc-link, which is not acceptable. By conducting various case studies, the impacts of the dc-link length, the transmitted power, and the conversion ratio on the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC are characterized. The results showed that the converter would be more sensitive to the parameter variation as these parameters increase. This paper presents a method for controlling the voltage of inverter-based Microgrids by proposing a new scale-free distributed cooperative controller. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed distributed cooperative controller is scale-free where is independent of any information about the communication system and the number of distributed generators, as such it works for any Microgrids with any size. Moreover, the communication network is modeled by a general time-varying graph which enhances the resilience of the proposed protocol against communication link failure, data packet loss, and arbitrarily fast plug and play operation in the presence of arbitrarily finite communication delays as the protocol does not require the knowledge of the upper bound on the delay. The stability analysis of the proposed protocol is provided. The proposed method is simulated on the CIGRE medium voltage Microgrid test system. The paper introduces the concept of complex frequency. The imaginary part of the complex frequency is the variation with respect of a synchronous reference of the local bus frequency as commonly defined in power system studies. The real part is defined based on the variation of the voltage magnitude. The latter term is crucial for the correct interpretation and analysis of the variation of the frequency at each bus of the network. The paper also develops a set of differential equations that describe the link between complex powers and complex frequencies at network buses in transient conditions. No simplifications are assumed except for the usual approximations of the models utilized for the transient stability analysis of power systems. Network partition in complex power networks is essential for the var-voltage control. Traditional partition methods such as Ward method are applied in practical power networks, but they are unable to evaluate the quality of partition results. Moreover, they lack efficiency when dealing with large-scale networks. Since complex operation characteristics and topology have emerged in recent power systems, the power grid partition requires higher efficiency and quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast network partition method with a balanced-depth-based community detection algorithm. Its aim is to significantly improve the efficiency of partition while maintaining high quality of partition, with which the inter-zone coupling is minimized while the intra-zone coupling is maximized. In the meantime, a surrogate-optimization-based selection algorithm is proposed to select the zonal pilot bus, based on which the secondary voltage control method is used to evaluate the quality of partition. Results from four case studies conducted in various power networks with different sizes, as compared to other partition methods, validate the high efficiency and high quality of the proposed power grid partition approach. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. The short-circuit response of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) is not adequately represented in many conventional protection studies. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of IIDG behavior during grid faults and proposes a more accurate reduced-order parameterized short-circuit current (RPSC) model of inverters. Typical inverter components are thoroughly investigated to identify those that play dominant roles during faults. The paper shows that the current limiter is the dominant factor for the steady-state fault-current of inverter; while the inverter filter along with the severity of the voltage disturbance largely determine the initial transient spike of inverter fault current. The proposed model is low-order and can be used in large scale simulations. The parameters of the proposed RPSC model can be extracted from laboratory experiments without requiring proprietary manufacturer information. The proposed fault-current model is analogous to the well-known synchronous machine model that segregates the inverter fault current into subtransient, transient, and steady-state fault currents. Autonomous power systems with a single power station and a high-voltage (HV) network may be susceptible to overvoltage instability, especially during light-load conditions. Moreover, in low inertia systems, considerable frequency excursions may be observed after disturbances. To deal with voltage and frequency stability problems in such isolated power systems, several measures should be taken, such as rules for adequate automatic voltage control of the synchronous generators and load-tap-changers (LTCs), and/or adequate design of actions applied during emergency system conditions such as reactors switching, and redesigning underfrequency load shedding taking into account overvoltage problems. The effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures against overvoltage instability in autonomous power systems is illustrated in this paper. In 2016, the autonomous power system of the Greek island of Rhodes experienced similar voltage/frequency problems leading to a blackout. This event has been accurately reconstructed in this paper. The application of the suggested countermeasures during the simulation of the 2016 blackout event in Rhodes, further highlighted the effectiveness of these measures, providing a guideline for similar cases. The presence of overvoltage can cause the insulation deterioration and excite the partial discharges (PD) in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), and it is necessary to detect the overvoltage and PDs simultaneously to evaluate the insulation performance. A novel GIS internal composite sensor for PD detection and overvoltage measurement is proposed in this paper. The proposed sensor is mainly formed with a disc-type monopole UHF sensor and an overvoltage sensor. The effectiveness and sensitivity of the sensor are tested on a designed platform under power frequency voltage, switching impulse, lightning impulse, and oscillating lightning impulse, respectively. Electrical equipment of the floating nuclear power plant operates in a long-term vibration environment. Ground faults occur frequently and are often accompanied by arc, a reliable arc suppression algorithm for the generator stator winding is necessary. In this paper, an active arc suppression method is proposed by connecting a controllable voltage source to the generator neutral point. Through regulating the neutral point voltage to be equal in amplitude and opposite in phase to the fault potential, the fault point voltage can be clamped to a low level to achieve arc suppression. Since the generator's phase potential contains certain harmonic components, the controllable voltage source includes fundamental and third-order harmonic components. To accurately calculate the output voltage, online calculation methods for the fault location, fault potential and grounding capacitance are proposed. The accuracy of the fault location method is verified by simulation and dynamic test. Multilevel converters (MLCs) are pioneers in the field of electrical energy conversion. From the classification of MLCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is top-rated due to its attractive structure and performance. The modular nature and no need for isolated DC resources are two significant advantages of this converter. However, the need for many sensors to control its performance is a considerable drawback. In addition, the internal circulating current in the MMC causes losses, decreases efficiency, and increases the voltage ripple of capacitors. This paper proposes combining a new capacitor voltage sorting method and an open-loop controller based on arms energy estimation to control the MMC using two voltage sensors in the arms and one current sensor at the output. The proposed method ensures continuous voltage balancing of the capacitors and removes multiple voltage sensors from sub-modules (SMs). In the conventional sliding mode control, the four-leg distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) currents are controlled based on a current error in each phase. However, the four currents in a four-wire system can not be independently controlled variables and hence one of the four controllers is redundant in conventional schemes. Further, the current dynamics of a DSTATCOM converter are coupled through converter pole voltages in the natural reference frame. This leads to cross-coupling in the sliding variable equations with respect to four manipulated input variables. Considering the above points, in this paper, the current due to Thevenin’s equivalent load neutral-point voltage is considered as a fourth independent controlled variable and the corresponding system dynamic equations are presented. To get a decoupled feature, a new sliding surface function is structured. The performance of a DSTATCOM with the proposed control scheme under various operating conditions is validated through a detailed simulation study and experimental results, obtained from a laboratory prototype of four-leg DSTATCOM. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Droop control is a viable method for the operation of island DC microgrids in a decentralized architecture. This paper presents a mixed-integer conic optimization formulation for the design of generator droop control, comprising the parameters of a piecewise linear droop curve. The mixed-integer formulation originates from a stochastic optimization framework that considers several operating scenarios for finding the optimal design. The convexity of the mixed-integer problem continuous relaxation gives global optimality guarantees for the design problem. The paper presents computational results using a tight polyhedral approximation of the conic program, leading to a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem that is solved using a state-of-the-art commercial solver. The results from the proposed approach are contrasted with both a classic linear droop control design and a recent piecewise linear formulation. The Monte-Carlo simulation results quantify the extent to which the MILP solution is superior in reducing voltage violations and power loss, and the degree to which the loss is close to that from a conic optimal power flow solution. Battery energy storage system (BESS) plays an important role in solving problems in which the intermittency has to be considered while operating distribution network (DN) penetrated with renewable energy. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes a global centralized dispatch model that applies BESS technology to DN with renewable energy source (RES). The method proposed in this paper aims to minimize the power purchase cost considering network active loss cost as well as voltage deviation penalty cost. Later, second-order cone programming (SOCP) method as well as big M method are applied to make the problem tractable. Aiming at the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) phenomenon in high-speed railways, this paper proposes a feedback linearized virtual inertia control (VIC) strategy of the traction converter based on a sliding mode observer (SMO) to improve the robustness of the system and suppress the occurrence of LFO. First, to optimize the total harmonic distortion of the traction grid-side current, the inner loop controller is designed as the feedback linearization control. Then, the voltage outer loop is designed as a combination of the VIC designed in this paper and SMO, which enhances the system inertia and reduces the impact of external interference on the system, while reducing the controller's demand for electrical power on the DC-side. Furthermore, a small-signal model is established to analyze the stability of the single-phase vehicle-grid system under the proposed control. The influence of the control parameters on stability is discussed in detail. Finally, the comparison of software simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experimental results between traditional PI control, feedback linearization control, feedback+SMO, feedback+VIC and the proposed control method shows that the proposed control has better dynamic and static characteristics, and can effectively inhibit the occurrence of LFO. Inverter-based Volt/Var control (VVC) methods can effectively address issues of voltage deviations and constraint violations, as well as reduce network power losses in active distribution networks. Conventional VVC mainly relies on rule-based, mathematical, or heuristic methods. However, these methods can be inefficient or even infeasible for large-scale systems, especially when operational uncertainties are considered at both spatial and temporal scales. To this end, firstly, this paper formulates a multi-region coordinated VVC optimization problem to simultaneously minimize bus voltage deviations and network power losses. Furthermore, with the problem being formulated as a partially observable Markov Game, a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) algorithm is modified to solve this problem. Each region, which is a sub-network with a control center, is modeled as an agent and learns to optimize inverter reactive power output setpoints through exploration in virtual environment and improved neural network training procedure. Spatial and temporal uncertainties of photovoltaic power generation and loads are modeled by stochastic programming as scenarios in the MADDPG algorithm. This algorithm can address the uncertainties to guarantee solution robustness.
