In the coronavirus epidemic, many Chinese hospitals have established buffer zones to prevent the spread and transmission of the virus. The buffer zone is a monitored and separate area where the patients who need hospitalizations after the quick treatments in the emergency department can temporarily wait for the Covid-19 test and receive some healthcare services to stabilize their conditions. Because the beds in the buffer zones are limited, the managers face the patient admission control problem for the buffer zone. This management and control problem is challenging since the patient arrivals are uncertain, and the patients’ conditions are different. In this paper, we build the infinite- and finite-horizon Markov decision process (MDP) models for this problem. We use the uniformization method to discretize the patient flow. We propose various iteration algorithms to solve the MDP models and obtain the optimal and threshold policies. Numerical experiments validate the advantages of the policies obtained by the algorithms in this paper over the current policies of hospitals. Based on hospitals’ real-life data, we show the methods presented in this paper can help hospital managers make more reasonable decisions. Although we focus on the hospital’s buffer zone in China, the methodology and approach for this problem can be extended to other practical hospital management scenarios in the coronavirus pandemic. Fast insecurity early warning is the key technique to resist the dynamic insecurity risk, which becomes intractable due to the strong nonlinearity of hybrid AC/DC grids and the high uncertainty of wind generation. Considering dynamic security constraints and wind power uncertainty, this paper presents an insecurity early warning method based on decision tree (DT) and semi-supervised deep learning. First, semi-supervised deep learning is deployed to estimate the dynamic security limit of the critical interface of hybrid AC/DC grids. The system security is assessed by comparing the actual power transfer of the critical interface with the security limit. Then, operating conditions (OCs) are ranked into different insecure levels according to the type of preventive control actions that is needed to ensure the system security. Finally, oblique DT is utilized to identify insecurity classification boundaries in the wind power injection space. Insecure OC sets are constructed based on these classification boundaries. Simulation results of the real-life Jiangsu-Shanghai interconnected grid in east China demonstrate that the proposed method can fast construct the insecure OC sets corresponding to different insecure levels. Sleep staging is the essential step in sleep quality assessment and sleep disorders diagnosis. However, most current automatic sleep staging approaches use recurrent neural networks (RNN), resulting in a relatively large training burden. Moreover, these methods only extract information of the whole epoch or adjacent epochs, ignoring the local signal variations within epoch. To address these issues, a novel deep learning architecture named segmented attention network (SAN) is proposed in this paper. The architecture can be divided into feature extraction (FE) and time sequence encoder (TSE). The FE module consists of multiple multiscale CNN (MMCNN) and residual squeeze and excitation block (SE block). The former extracts features from multiple equal-length EEG segments and the latter reinforced the features. The TSE module based on a multi-head attention mechanism could capture the temporal information in the features extracted by FE module. Noteworthy, in SAN, we replaced the RNN module with a TSE module for temporal learning and made the network faster. The evaluation of the model was performed on two widely used public datasets, Montreal Archive of Sleep Studies (MASS) and Sleep-EDFX, and one clinical dataset from Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China (HSFU). The proposed model achieved the accuracy of 85.5%, 86.4%, 82.5% on Sleep-EDFX, MASS and HSFU, respectively. The experimental results exhibited favorable performance and consistent improvements of SAN on different datasets in comparison with the state-of-the-art studies. Understanding intra-urban human mobility patterns and their potential driving forces are vital to city planning and commercial site selection. In this paper, we first investigate the functions of urban regions and how different region types dynamically influence people’s trip decisions. Furthermore, we characterize urban circadian rhythms by time-vary inter-regional transition probabilities between these regions with different functions, and integrate them into intervening opportunity model to predict human mobility. Public transportation card data in Shanghai are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in terms of station passenger flows, travel time and trip flux. By taking regional function into consideration, the proposed model significantly improved the prediction accuracy. Quantitative analysis ulteriorly indicates that trip intentions and regional features are critical elements in trip flux prediction, especially in the afternoon and evening when people have an abundance of opportunities to travel by their own volition. When the function of a certain region changes, our model is able to make reasonable predictions accordingly. The results indicate the importance of considering individual travel motivation and regional function in modeling human mobility. Ambulance offload delays have become a challenging concern for emergency healthcare service providers. These delays often occur when the number of patients in the emergency department (ED) exceed the designed capacity such that ED cannot accept an incoming patient immediately, thereby forcing the ambulance and crew to wait with the patient until a bed becomes available. In this paper, we analyze and optimize the emergency medical services network, including ambulance stations and EDs. The objective is to reduce ambulance offload delays and lessen the congestion of EDs. To this end, we first build a continuous-time Markov chain to characterize this network analytically. Next, from the perspectives of both ambulance stations and EDs, we develop resource configuration and optimization models for this network. We investigate the reasons for ED overcapacity and ambulance offload delays. Finally, we design an effective approach to reconfigure the resources in the emergency medical services network, leading to a new and better equilibrium. Note to Practitioners—This article is motivated by our collaborations with the Emergency Medical Service Center (also called 120 Center) and several hospitals in Shanghai, China. The Emergency Medical Service Center and ED of hospitals are the frontlines of healthcare services in Shanghai. They provide medical treatment services for acutely ill and injured patients, so the operation of this system is critical to the health of such patients. Today, the ambulance offloading delay poses a challenge to the Emergency Medical Service Center, as it reduces the usage of ambulances and crews, as well as putting patients at risk. Meanwhile, the EDs sometimes suffer from bed shortages and overcrowding. Emergency Medical Service Centers and hospitals are both striving to improve the performance of this system. We analyze the network, including both the ambulance station (AS) and ED, and formulate a continuous-time Markov chain model to describe the network states. Then, we propose two optimization models from both AS and ED perspectives with a series of approximation methods to overcome computational difficulties. We obtain the equilibrium through joint optimization of AS and ED and demonstrate some valuable insights for managing ambulances and beds in the ED. With widespread deployment of GPS devices, massive spatiotemporal trajectories became more accessible. This booming trend paved the solid data ground for researchers to discover the regularities or patterns of human mobility. However, there are still three challenges in semantic pattern extraction including semantic absence, semantic bias and semantic complexity. In this paper, we invent and apply a novel data structure namely City Semantic Diagram to overcome above three challenges. First, our approach resolves semantic absence by exactly identifying semantic behaviours from raw trajectories. Second, the design of semantic purification helps us to detect semantic complexity from human mobility. Third, we avoid semantic bias using objective data source such as ubiquitous GPS trajectories. Comprehensive and massive experiments have been conducted based on real taxi trajectories and points of interest in Shanghai. High-precision road detection from very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing images has broad application value. However, the most advanced deep learning based methods often fail to identify roads when there is a distribution discrepancy between the training samples and test samples, due to their limited generalization ability. In this paper, to address this problem, an open-source data-driven domain-specific representation (OSM-DOER) framework is proposed for cross-domain road detection. On the one hand, as the spatial structure information of the source and target domains is similar, but the texture information is different, the domain-specific representation (DOER) framework is proposed, which not only aligns the distributions of the spatial structure information, but also learns the domain-specific texture information. Furthermore, in order to enhance the representation of the target domain data distribution, open-source and freely available OpenStreetMap (OSM) road centerline data are utilized to generate target domain samples, which are then used in the network training as the supervised information for the target domain. Finally, to verify the superiority of the proposed OSM-DOER framework, we conducted extensive experiments with the public SpaceNet and DeepGlobe road datasets, and large-scale road datasets from Birmingham in the UK and Shanghai in China. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed OSM-DOER framework shows obvious advantages over the mainstream road detection methods, and the use of OSM road centerline data has great potential for the road detection task. Electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES) is an epileptic encephalopathy in children with complex clinical manifestations. It is accompanied by specific electroencephalography (EEG) patterns of continuous spike and slow-waves. Quantifying such EEG patterns is critical to the diagnosis of ESES. While most of the existing automatic ESES quantification systems ignore the morphological variations of the signal as well as the individual variability among subjects. To address these issues, this paper presents a hybrid expert system that dedicates to mimicking the decision-making process of clinicians in ESES quantification by taking the morphological variations, individual variability, and medical knowledge into consideration. The proposed hybrid system not only offers a general scheme that could propel a semi-auto morphology analysis-based expert decision model to a fully automated ESES quantification with biogeography-based optimization (BBO), but also proposes a more precise individualized quantification system to involve the personalized characteristics by adopting an individualized parameters-selection framework. The feasibility and reliability of the proposed method are evaluated on a clinical dataset collected from twenty subjects at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. The estimation error for the individualized quantitative descriptor ESES is 0-4.32% and the average estimation error is 0.95% for all subjects. Experimental results show the presented system outperforms existing works and the individualized system significantly improves the performance of ESES quantification. Elimination of intra-artifacts in EEG has been overlooked in most of the existing sleep staging systems, especially in deep learning-based approaches. Whether intra-artifacts, originated from the eye movement, chin muscle firing, or heart beating, etc., in EEG signals would lead to a positive or a negative masking effect on deep learning-based sleep staging systems was investigated in this paper. We systematically analyzed several traditional pre-processing methods involving fast Independent Component Analysis (FastICA), Information Maximization (Infomax), and Second-order Blind Source Separation (SOBI). On top of these methods, a SOBI-WT method based on the joint use of the SOBI and Wavelet Transform (WT) is proposed. It offered an effective solution for suppressing artifact components while retaining residual informative data. To provide a comprehensive comparative analysis, these pre-processing methods were applied to eliminate the intra-artifacts and the processed signals were fed to two ready-to-use deep learning models, namely two-step hierarchical neural network (THNN) and SimpleSleepNet for automatic sleep staging. The evaluation was performed on two widely used public datasets, Montreal Archive of Sleep Studies (MASS) and Sleep-EDF Expanded, and a clinical dataset that was collected in Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China (HSFU). The proposed SOBI-WT method increased the accuracy from 79.0% to 81.3% on MASS, 83.3% to 85.7% on Sleep-EDF Expanded, and 75.5% to 77.1% on HSFU compared with the raw EEG signal, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the intra-artifacts bring out a masking negative impact on the deep learning-based sleep staging systems and the proposed SOBI-WT method has the best performance in diminishing this negative impact compared with other artifact elimination methods. Inevitable irregularities excite a traveling maglev train along a journey by disturbing air gaps and thus modifying levitation forces. For a half bogie which is a rigid coupled structure with a separate levitation unit at each endpoint, the effects of track irregularities hamper the synchronization of the two units. Motivated by the aforementioned, this paper establishes a newly nonlinear model for the half bogie considering irregularities, internal and external disturbances. Based on this model, a prescribed-time synchronization controller (PTSC) considering input constraints is designed while two adaptive disturbance observers (ADOs) are combined to address track irregularities and disturbances. To reduce the actuating times caused by synchronization, a lazy cooperation mode is adopted by independently introducing an event-triggered mechanism for each levitation unit. Theoretical analysis establishes the stability of the whole control scheme and demonstrates that the tracking errors and estimate errors can be arbitrarily small within a prescribed time, which can be determined by users through a parameter, and the synchronization is achieved. Numerical simulations compared with other two control schemes verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, where both the ideal irregularity model and the field data measured from the Shanghai commercial line are tested. In structural health monitoring (SHM), measuring and evaluating structural dynamic responses are critical for safety management of civil infrastructures. Particularly, online forecasting of the structural responses under extreme external loading conditions (e.g., earthquakes) takes a significant role in SHM to provide early warning and ensure safe operation. In practice, complex causality and intrinsic interactions between seismic excitation and structural response make it challenging to establish a reliable predictive scheme. The present paper proposes a novel deep recurrent neural network (RNN) model implemented in the architecture of a time-series attention-based RNN encoder–decoder (TSA-RNN-ED), for predictive analysis of structural responses under seismic excitation. In the proposed data-driven model, upcoming sequential responses are predicted through sequence-to-sequence learning from historical multivariate time-series signals. A time-series attention mechanism is proposed to exploit the heterogeneous, but directly related, hidden features between the seismic loads and the corresponding structural responses. The proposed architecture can reliably regress excitation-response interactions to predict dynamic responses subjected to future earthquakes while satisfying the need of real-time forecasting for on-site practical implementation. This article systematically evaluates the proposed model by using two real-world structural cases: 1) the tallest building in China, the Shanghai Tower and 2) a woodframe classroom on a shake table at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Nowadays, the autonomous driving transportation systems are at the heart of both academic and industry research for the distinguished advantages including increased network capacity, enhanced punctuality, greater flexibility and improved overall safety level. With the responsibility of transporting passengers in a safe, comfortable and efficient way, the decision making method plays a critical position in the autonomous driving of high-speed trains. Focusing on solving the autonomous decision making problem, this paper proposes a novel learning based framework by combining the deep learning technology with the distributed tracking control approach. To cope with the data insufficiency problem in training the deep learning network, a generative adversarial network (GAN) based data argumentation scheme is proposed to generate data samples that have the same distribution with actual data samples, and a hybrid learning network is constructed to predict the speed trajectory from the multi-attribute data with both temporal sequences and static features. Then, based on the model predictive control (MPC) scheme, a distributed tracking control model is formulated to minimize the tracking deviations and balance the performance of punctuality, energy-efficiency and riding comfort. Further, the dual decomposition technique is adopted to deal with the coupling constraints for the safe distance headway such that the separation for the autonomous driving of high-speed trains is achieved. Virtual Coupling (VC) is regarded as a breakthrough to the traditional train operation and control for improving the capability and flexibility in railways. It brings benefits as trains under VC are allowed to operate much closer to one another, forming a virtually coupled train set (VCTS). However, the safe and stable spacing between trains in the VCTS is a problem since there are no rigid couplers to connect them into a fixed formation, especially in high-speed scenarios. Due to the close spacing, the interference between trains becomes non-negligible as various maneuvers of the preceding train can significantly affect driving behaviors of the following train; this results in fluctuating spacing and therefore an unstable VCTS. Aiming at minimizing the interference and maintaining constantly safe spacing between trains in the VCTS, this paper presents a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) approach for solving the high-speed VCTS control problem. Particularly, the proposed control method focuses on the feasibility and stability of this problem, with considerations of the coupled constraint of safety braking distance and the individual constraints of speed limit variations and restricted traction/braking performance. To guarantee feasibility and stability, the terminal controller and invariant set of the DMPC are designed. For rigor, sufficient conditions of feasibility and stability are mathematically proved and derived. Based on the data of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway line, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the correctness of derived sufficient conditions and the effectiveness of the proposed control method under interference and disturbances. Currently, self-driving, emerging as a key automatic application, has brought a huge potential for the provision of in-vehicle services (e.g., automatic path planning) to mitigate urban traffic congestion and enhance travel safety. To provide high-quality vehicular services with stringent delay constraints, edge computing (EC) enables resource-hungry self-driving vehicles (SDVs) to offload computation-intensive tasks to the edge servers (ESs). In addition, caching highly reusable contents decreases the redundant transmission time and improves the quality of services (QoS) of SDVs, which is envisioned as a supplement to the computation offloading. However, the high mobility and time-varying requests of SDVs make it challenging to provide reliable offloading decisions while guaranteeing the resource utilization of content caching. To this end, in this paper we propose a collaborative computation offloading and content caching method, named CoPace, by leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in EC for self-driving system. Specifically, we first introduce OSTP to predict the future time-varying content popularity, taking into account the temporal-spatial attributes of requests. Moreover, a DRL-based algorithm is developed to jointly optimize the offloading and caching decisions, as well as the resource allocation (i.e., computing and communication resources) strategies. Extensive experiments with real-world datasets in Shanghai, China, are conducted to evaluate the performance, which demonstrates that CoPace is both effective and well-performed. Obtaining crowd flow distribution with recognized human intention is extremely valuable for a series of applications for metropolitan cities. Previous solutions look at spatial correlation and temporal periodicity based on historical crowd flow information to calculate future crowd flow distribution. However, these mechanisms cannot recognize the intention behind crowd flow. We address this problem by leveraging a key insight – people's intention behind their movement is highly correlated with the point-of-interest (POI) distribution of the corresponding regions and adjacent regions. Therefore, we propose DeepFlowGen to model the complicated relationship between crowd flow, POI, check-ins, and time to generate intention-aware crowd flow. Specifically, we solve the conflict between dynamic crowd flow and static POI distribution by fusing the information in both time and POI domains. Besides, we employ a sequence of residual blocks in DeepFlowGen to address the challenges of modeling the diverse temporal rhythms and heterogeneous influence of POI. Furthermore, we examine the generated intention-aware crowd flow from two aspects to substantiate the reasonability of DeepFlowGen. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions by at most 30 percent in terms of NRMSE of total crowd flow. Moreover, the correlation between the generated intention-aware crowd flow and the check-in distribution across different categories of POIs is as high as 0.90 and 0.80 in Beijing and Shanghai. The modular multilevel railway power conditioner (MM-RPC) can effectively improve the power quality of the railway power grid. However, since the operating conditions of MM-RPC frequently vary with the traction load, the junction temperatures of semiconductor devices fluctuate very drastically. Severe junction temperature swings can easily affect the service lifetime and reliability of the MM-RPC. In this article, a power hysteresis based on incomplete compensation control strategy is proposed. The proposed control can effectively reduce junction temperature fluctuations under complex mission profiles and increase the overall life of the system while meeting the power quality requirements. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed control is verified in MATLAB/PLECS electrothermal cosimulation under a section of the load curve of the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway traction substation. We report a 3-year city-wide study of an operational indoor sensing system based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) called aBeacon (short for alibaba Beacon). aBeacon is pilot-studied, A/B tested, deployed, and operated in Shanghai, China to infer the indoor status of Alibaba couriers, e.g., arrival and departure at the merchants participating in the Alibaba Local Services platform. In its full operation stage (2018/01-2020/04), aBeacon consists of customized BLE devices at 12,109 merchants, interacting with 109,378 couriers to infer their status to assist the scheduling of 64 million delivery orders for 7.3 million customers with a total amount of $\$ $ 600 million order values. Although in an academic setting, using BLE devices to detect arrival and departure looks straightforward, it is non-trivial to design, build, deploy, and operate aBeacon from its conception to its retirement at city scale in a metric-based approach by considering the tradeoffs between various practical factors (e.g., cost and performance) during long-term system evolution. We report our study in two phases, i.e., an 8-month pilot study and a 28-month deployment and operation in the wild. We focus on an in-depth reporting on the five lessons learned and provide their implications in other systems with long-term operation and broad geospatial coverage, e.g., Edge Computing.
