Cyanobacteria blooms have been reported to be increasing worldwide. In addition to potentially causing major economic and ecological damage, these blooms can threaten human health. Furthermore, these blooms can be exacerbated by a warming climate. One approach to monitoring and modeling cyanobacterial biomass is to use processed satellite imagery to obtain long-term data sets. In this paper, an existing algorithm for estimating cyanobacterial biomass previously developed for MERIS is validated for Green Bay using cyanobacteria biovolume estimates obtained from field samples. Once the algorithm was validated, the existing MERIS imagery was used to determine the bloom phenology of the cyanobacterial biomass in Green Bay. Modeled datasets of heat flux (as a proxy for stratification), wind speed, water temperature, and gelbstoff absorption along with in situ river discharge data were used to separate bloom seasons in Green Bay from bloom seasons in nearby cyanobacteria bloom hotspots including western Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay. Of the ten-year MERIS dataset used here, the highest five years were considered "high bloom" years, and the lowest five years from biomass were considered "low bloom" years and these definitions were used to separate Green Bay. Green Bay had a strong relationship with gelbstoff absorption making it unique among the water bodies, while western Lake Erie responded strongly with river discharge as previously reported. Monthly climatology data for salinity fronts in the South Atlantic have been created from satellite SMOS sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements taken from 2011–2019, processed at the Barcelona Expert Center of Remote Sensing (BEC), and provided as high-resolution (1/20°) daily SSS data. The SSS fronts have been identified with narrow zones of enhanced horizontal gradient magnitude (GM) of SSS, computed using the Belkin–O'Reilly algorithm (BOA). The SSS gradient fields generated by the BOA have been log-transformed to facilitate feature recognition. The log-transformation of SSS gradients markedly improved the visual contrast of gradient maps, which in turn allowed new features to be revealed and previously known features to be documented with a monthly temporal resolution and a mesoscale (~100 km) spatial resolution. Monthly climatologies were generated and analyzed for large-scale open-ocean SSS fronts and for low-salinity regions maintained by the Rio de la Plata discharge, Magellan Strait outflow, Congo River discharge, and Benguela Upwelling. A 2000 km-long triangular area between Africa and Brazil was found to be filled with regular quasi-meridional mesoscale striations that form a giant ripple field with a 100 km wave length. South of the Tropical Front, within the subtropical high-salinity pool, a trans-ocean quasi-zonal narrow linear belt of meridional SSS maximum (Smax) was documented. The meridional Smax belt shifts north–south seasonally while retaining its well-defined linear morphology, which is suggestive of a yet unidentified mechanism that maintains this feature. The Subtropical Frontal Zone (STFZ) consists of two tenuously connected fronts, western and eastern. The Brazil Current Front (BCF) extends SE between 40 and 45°S to join the subantarctic front (SAF). The STFZ trends NW–SE across the South Atlantic, seemingly merging with the SAF/BCF south of Africa to form a single front between 40 and 45°S. In the SW Atlantic, the Rio de la Plata plume migrates seasonally, expanding northward in winter (June–July) from 39°S into the South Brazilian Bight, up to Cabo Frio (23°S) and beyond. The inner Plata front moves in and out seasonally. Farther south, the Magellan Strait outflow expands northward in winter (June–July) from 53°S up to 39–40°S to nearly join the Plata outflow. In the SE Atlantic, the Congo River plume spreads radially from the river mouth, with the spreading direction varying seasonally. The plume is often bordered from the south by a quasi-zonal front along 6°S. The diluted Congo River water spreads southward seasonally down to the Angola–Benguela Front at 16°S. The Benguela Upwelling is delineated by a meridional front, which extends north alongshore up to 20°S, where the low-salinity Benguela Upwelling water forms a salinity front, which is separate from the thermal Angola–Benguela Front at 16°S. The high-salinity tropical water ("Angola water") forms a wedge between the low-salinity waters of the Congo River outflow and Benguela Upwelling. Operational weather satellites, dating back to 1970s, currently provide the best basis for climatological investigations, such as an analysis of changes in the cloud cover. Because clouds are highly dynamic in time, temporally high-resolution data from the geostationary orbit are preferred in order to take variations in the diurnal cycles into account. For such studies, a consistent dataset in space and time is mandatory, but not yet available. Ground-based point measurements of various cloud parameters, such as ceiling, visibility, and cloud type are often sparsely spread and inconsistent, making it difficult to derive reliable spatio-temporal information over large areas. The Meteosat program has generally provided suitable data from over Europe since 1977, but different spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution of the instruments of the individual satellites, including early-years calibration uncertainties, makes harmonization necessary to finally derive a time series applicable to any kind of climatological study. In this study, a machine learning-based approach has been employed to generate a long-term consistent dataset with high spatio-temporal resolution and extensive coverage over Europe by the harmonization of Meteosat First Generation (MFG) and Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite datasets (1991–2020). A random forest (RF) regressor is trained on the overlap period (2004–2006), where datasets of both satellite generation (MFG and MSG) are available to predict MFG Water Vapour (WV) and Infrared (IR) channels brightness temperature (BT) values based on MSG channels. The aim of the study is to synthesize MFG MVIRI data from MSG SEVIRI to generate a consistent MFG time series. The results indicate a good match of MFG synthesized data with the original MFG data with a mean absolute error of 0.7 K for the WV model and 1.6 K for the IR model, and an out-of-bag (OOB) R² score of 0.98 for both the models. Based on the trained models, the MFG scenes are synthesized from the MSG scenes for the years from 2006 to 2020. The long-term homogeneity of the generated time series is analyzed. The harmonized dataset will be applied to generate a continuous time series on fog and low stratus (FLS) occurrence for a climatological time scale of 30 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall data have a profound significance for meteorology, climatology, hydrology, and environmental sciences. However, existing rainfall observation methods (including ground-based rain gauges and radar-/satellite-based remote sensing) are not efficient in terms of spatiotemporal resolution and cannot meet the needs of high-resolution application scenarios (urban waterlogging, emergency rescue, etc.). Widespread surveillance cameras have been regarded as alternative rain gauges in existing studies. Surveillance audio, through exploiting their nonstop use to record rainfall acoustic signals, should be considered a type of data source to obtain high-resolution and all-weather data. In this study, a method named parallel neural network based on attention mechanisms and multi-scale fusion (PNNAMMS) is proposed for automatically classifying rainfall levels by surveillance audio. The proposed model employs a parallel dual-channel network with spatial channel extracting the frequency domain correlation, and temporal channel capturing the time-domain continuity of the rainfall sound. Additionally, attention mechanisms are used on the two channels to obtain significant spatiotemporal elements. A multi-scale fusion method was adopted to fuse different scale features in the spatial channel for more robust performance in complex surveillance scenarios. Changes in vegetation dynamics play a critical role in terrestrial ecosystems and environments. Remote sensing products and dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) are useful for studying vegetation dynamics. In this study, we revised the Community Land Surface Biogeochemical Dynamic Vegetation Model (referred to as the BGCDV_CTL experiment) and validated it for the Tibetan Plateau (TP) by comparing vegetation distribution and carbon flux simulations against observations. Then, seasonal–deciduous phenology parameterization was adopted according to the observed parameters (referred to as the BGCDV_NEW experiment). Compared to the observed parameters, monthly variations in gross primary productivity (GPP) showed that the BGCDV_NEW experiment had the best performance against the in situ observations on the TP. The climatology from the remote sensing and simulated GPPs showed similar patterns, with GPP increasing from northwest to southeast, although the BGCDV_NEW experiment overestimated GPP in the semi-arid and arid regions of the TP. The results show that temperature warming was the dominant factor resulting in the increase in GPP based on the remote sensing products, while precipitation enhancement was the reason for the GPP increase in the model simulation. In this study, we apply a bibliometric analysis to characterize publication data on droughts, mainly focusing on drought indices (DIs), drought risk (DR), and drought forecast (DF). Data on publications on these selected topics were obtained through the Scopus database, covering the period from 1963 to June 2021. The DI-related publications, based on meteorological, soil moisture, hydrological, remote sensing, and composite/modeled Dis, accounted for 57%, 8%, 4%, 29%, and 2% of the scientific sources, respectively. DI-related studies showed a notable increase since the 1990s, due perhaps to a higher number of major droughts during the last three decades. It was found that USA and China were the two leading countries in terms of publication count and academic influence on the DI, DR, and DF studies. A network analysis of the country of residence of co-authors on DR and DF research highlighted the top three countries, which were the USA, China, and the United Kingdom. The most productive journal for the DI studies was found to be the International Journal of Climatology, whereas Natural Hazards was identified as the first-ranked journal for the DR and DF studies. In relation to individual researchers, Singh VP from the USA was found to be the most prolific author, having the greatest academic influence on DF study, whereas Zhang Q from China was identified as the most productive author on DR study. This bibliometric analysis reveals that further research is needed on droughts in the areas of risk management, water management, and drought management. This review maps trends of previous research in drought science, covering several important aspects, such as drought indices, geographic regions, authors and their collaboration paths, and sub-topics of interest. This article is expected to serve as an index of the current state of knowledge on drought warning systems and as guidance for future research needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
