This paper reviews the literature on passive building design for improving indoor thermal comfort in tropical climates through a bibliometric analysis. The Web of Science database and CiteSpace were searched, and 722 articles were selected and analyzed to form the body of this article. An overview of the evolution of publications from 1984 to 2021 is first presented, followed by an examination of the co-citation networks of journals, countries, keywords, documents and authors. Co-occurrence analysis of 391 keywords, 861 highly cited publications and the top 15 most frequently mentioned publications and most salient were used to identify research methodologies and to analyze the correlation search of articles. Some notable work on thermal comfort models and passive design strategies suitable for a warm climate is also discussed. The results show that real-time field studies compared to dynamic simulations represent the most outstanding research on passive design and thermal comfort of buildings in tropical climates. In addition, standards such as ASHRAE Standard 55 and ISO Standard 7730 have played an essential role in the evolution of the subject. Our paper investigates how an institution can be maintained over a long period of time through adaptations to the material artefact which instantiates it. To illustrate our argument, we conduct a historical case study of the Guimard Metropolitan railway entrances, a material artefact which instantiates the Belle Epoque institution from 1914 to 2000. Based on our findings, we develop a process model of institutional maintenance based on the malleability of a material artefact. Supported by three types of interrelated institutional work – damage, preservation and transferability work – we illustrate how adaptations to the material form, meaning and location of an artefact allow an institution to address the evolving environment and its associated challenges and thus to be maintained over time. Our study expands our understanding of long-term institutional maintenance by capturing the importance of the malleability of an artefact and in offering a more positive view on damage work. It also has some implications for studies on materiality in highlighting the multidimensionality of artefacts and the role of transferability and relocation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The ambient and indoor environment are pivotal to our health. We spend most of our time indoors within our home, why our home is where we are most exposed to indoor pollutants and indoor air quality (IAQ). Populations within social housing areas are more vulnerable due to advanced age, co-morbidity and social economic status. Commonly, studies within social housing are cross-sectional, few Nordic longitudinal studies exist, and fewer studies combine quantitative and qualitative measurements in a mixed method approach. Method: This research proposal provides an extensive detailed description of the design and methodology of the HOME-Health study. The study is a longitudinal study and is a natural experiment employing structured surveys, objective measurements of indoor air parameters, lung function test and qualitative semi-structured interviews. Data collection are conducted seasonally (winter and summer), before and after building energy renovation (BER). Generalisability: The study population before BER (n = 432) was explored and found similar to the Danish social housing population in terms of age, gender, persons per apartment and migration status. Future analyses should be stratified by multi-family apartments and terraced houses. Research aim: The aim of the HOME-Health study is to provide knowledge about residents' seasonal state of health, perception of indoor enviromental quality (IEQ), IEQ-related behaviours and practices, and objective measurements of IAQ before and after BER. By applying a design with repeated measurement before and after BER, and combining both objective and subjective quantitative as well as qualitative data the study is expected to create in-depth knowledge. Future results will provide evidence of both energy-savings and non-energy savings from different BER projects. We respond to the call for more research into the entanglement between multiple (including non-visual and non-verbal) modes of communication within organizations by exploring the relationships between rhetoric and materiality. We draw on archival sources concerning the Founder's Building at Royal Holloway College (1874–1897). We discuss the building as a multimodal material object, inherently multiple, fluid and messy: the Founder's Building is open to multiple encounters with sociality through multiple modes of communication. We find that such 'messiness' explains how the spatial, aural, sensual and visual modes embedded in a material object engage with each other, as well as with other visual, verbal and numerical modes, in the crafting of rhetoric: different modes sustain and oppose each other and evolve through absences and presences. We find that the messiness of material objects explains the engagement between rhetoric and materiality: materiality can limit or augment rhetoric, and materiality and rhetoric can co-evolve when the 'rhetors' (such as the founder and the governors of the College) and their audiences (such as students, visitors and tax authorities) attempt to transform the object (the Founder's Building) into always something else, even an absent object. Control algorithms are the most critical aspects in the successful control of civil structures subjected to earthquake and wind forces. In recent years, adaptive intelligent control algorithms are emerging as an acceptable substitute method to conventional model-based control algorithms. These algorithms mainly work on the principles of artificial intelligence (AI) and soft computing (SC) methods that make them highly efficient in controlling highly nonlinear, time-varying, and time-delayed complex civil structures. The current research probes to control algorithms, that this article set forth an inclusive state-of-the-art review of adaptive intelligent control (AIC) algorithms for vibration control of smart civil structures. First, a general introduction to adaptive intelligent control is presented along with its advantages over conventional control algorithms. Second, their classification concerning artificial intelligence and soft computing methods is provided that mainly consists of artificial neural network-based controller, brain emotional learning-based intelligent controller, replicator dynamics-based controller, multi-agent system-based controller, support vector machine-based controller, fuzzy logic control, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-based controller, adaptive filters-base controller, and meta-heuristic algorithms-based hybrid controllers. Third, a brief review of these algorithms with their developments on the theory and applications is provided. Fourth, we demonstrate a summarized overview of the cited literature with a brief trend analysis is presented. Finally, this study presents an overview of these innovative AIC methods that can demonstrate future directions. The contribution of this article is the anticipation of detailed and in-depth discussion into the perspective of AI and SC-based AIC method advances that enabled practical applications in attenuating vibration response of smart civil structures. Autism spectrum conditions are widely characterized as a cognitive difference which affects social understanding and behaviour. However, evidence increasingly suggests that the condition also affects engagement with material aspects of the environment. Here we review research into how autism affects engagement with the material world. We argue that, whilst there are important distinctions, autism affects perception of the social and material world in similar ways. Furthermore, a subtly different engagement with the material world can bring certain advantages and social contributions. We discuss implications for future research and for inclusion. Culture and tradition are essential components of the traditional architecture. However, in the era of globalization and modernization, traditional architecture is fast disappearing in most part of Africa due to neglect and lack of understanding of its importance. A reconsideration becomes necessary as traditional architecture can be a source of inspiration even in contemporary times. Through a systematic literature review, this article takes a critical look at how culture affects architecture in Africa with Nigeria as a case study. It explores various traditional architectural accomplishments across Africa revealing the disappearance of cultural identity and the weak connection between traditional and contemporary architecture. It then concludes with strategies toward survival and revival of indigenous African architecture with clear direction on architects' key roles in persevering the Africans endangered culture.
