China's current energy consumption is primarily fueled by coal, increasing coal mining with growing energy demand. Coal and gas outburst accidents are common problems in coal mining, and prediction methods are fundamental for preventing such accidents. The gas emission characteristics of boreholes are a combination of comprehensive coal properties and coal seam gas occurrence status; thus, the accurate prediction of gas emissions from boreholes is crucial for preventing such hazards. This paper presents a method for measuring the gas flow rate in continuous boreholes, which is used to predict outburst danger in front of the working face. The model was compared with field measurement data and found suitable for research. The effects of different initial gas pressures, different borehole radius, and different burial depths on gas emissions from boreholes were studied. The results showed that (1) initial gas pressure is the main influencing factor of gas gushing. The amount of gas emission during drilling and the attenuation of gas pressure are more sensitive to pressure. An increase in gas pressure considerably increases the amount of gas gushing out of drilling holes. (2) The increase in the drilling radius increases the generation of coal cuttings, the area of the drilling hole wall, and the degree of damage to the drilling hole wall. Consequently, the amount of gas gushing out of the drilling hole increases. (3) In situ stress occurs mainly because of the increase in gas pressure with an increase in burial depth and the increase in gas desorption caused by the increase in damage to the borehole wall. This study provides a new outburst prediction method, which involves identifying outburst hazards through the gas gushing out of the borehole. Fractures have significant impact on the stability of underground projects such as coal mining. The identification of geological features based on drilling parameters is a promising option for intelligent detection of rock formations. A series of studies conducted to identify fractures under unstable drilling conditions are presented in this paper. First, the forces acting around the drill bit are analyzed to further improve the force model of the two-wing PDC drill bit. Then, based on the self-developed borehole drilling device, the drilling parameters are collected in real time while drilling in concrete of different strengths and different fracture widths. Finally, the response characteristics of drilling parameters are analyzed, and the multi-parameter voting method is proposed for fracture identification. The experimental results show that when fracture width increases, the crushing area, which forms around the borehole when the drill bit encounters the fracture, tends to increase. The rate of penetration (ROP) increases suddenly, the revolution per minute (RPM) decreases, and the torque increases at fracture encounter. The sudden changes are recovered after passing the fracture. The multi-parameter voting method has a high recognition rate for fractures of width greater than 2 mm, but a relatively low recognition rate for fractures of 1 mm width. In addition to detecting fractures, the method performs well in predicting fracture location and fracture width. As the thrust (torque) increases, the amount of change in penetration rate caused by the unit change in thrust (torque) decreases. The problem of boreholes deflection in coal mines is common, especially in soft and hard composite coal seams. As a result, the distribution of boreholes is uneven and forms a blank zone in the drainage area, which fails to achieve the regional pre-draining, causing gas explosion or coal and gas outburst accidents. Aiming at the above problems, this paper developed the technology of anti-inclination for drilling based on the causes of borehole deflection in detail. The anti-inclination advice integrates straight keeping, slag removal and smooth back drilling with reasonable technical parameters. Full hole drilling was adopted to realize straight drilling. Three spiral grooving, vertical grooving and three-edge short-circuit were adopted for collaborative slag removal. Three alloy pieces were welded at the rear end of anti-inclination device to act as reverse drill bit, realizing smooth drilling withdrawal. For sticking problems, we improved the anti-inclination device. Three 20 mm millimeters wide vertical grooves were milled in each 120° direction around the device. After using the improved anti-inclination device, the average deviation of dip and azimuth was only 4.8 and 4.5 degrees, respectively, which were reduced by 51 and 44%. The borehole offset was reduced from 9.9 m to 2.9 m, a decrease of 71%, which improved the gas drainage effect and ensured the safe production of the mine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While large-scale rock strata affected by underground coal mining have been widely studied through numerical modeling, there are still some aspects that can be better understood. Specifically, researchers do not fully utilize borehole logs and test results of rock specimens to reveal rock mass property variation along horizontal directions and strata lateral thickness variation at bed level. In this paper, we address this knowledge gap by proposing a data-intensive numerical modeling method (DINMM) that can make full use of these data with consideration of the modeling limitations of BlockRanger, a grid generation tool. Both the proposed method and the conventional numerical modeling method (CNMM) are applied to the Ying-Pan-Hao coal mine via the FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of a Continua in 3 Dimensions) package, and their predictions are then calibrated and compared to discuss the validity. Results show that, compared to the CNMM-based predictions, the root mean square error of 70 monitoring points is decreased at least by 27.4% in the DINMM-based prediction, and the relative error of maximum subsidence is reduced by 5.1% with a reduction rate of 66.5% on average, even though the CNMM-based model was originally better calibrated. We also find that a DINMM-based model is more in line with field observations and theoretical understanding in terms of displacement, stress, and failure propagation. The notion of data-intensive modeling seems to be quite promising and the DINMM should be useful for a better understanding of strata movement and subsidence prediction. The working face is seriously threatened by limestone aquifer with high-water pressure in coal seam floor when Permo-Carboniferous coal is mined in North China Coalfield. Mine water control has become one of the major technical problems in coal mine production. Grouting transformation for limestone aquifer is an effective means to guarantee mining safety. A case of the 16,104 working face of the Luxi coal mine was studied in this paper. The results by the method of water-inrush coefficient (WIC) showed that there was a great risk of water inrush in 16,104 working face. There were differences between water-rich areas of floor aquifer obtained by geophysical methods and the areas with large water inflow by drilling exploration. The geophysical methods were performed again in the water-rich areas using traditional grouting method, results showed that the water-rich areas changed places, indicating that the effect of traditional grouting was not obvious. Grouting of areas of high-water inflow has reduced the water inflow. However, the grouting also has changed the water flow paths. What's more, the drill holes sealed poorly will also lead to the change of the position of the water-rich areas. To enhance overall grouting efficiency and cut down the repeated grouting times, a secondary grouting-reinforcement method was proposed to ensure amount grout injected into aquifer. To reduce the gas disaster of high gas coal seam and improve the efficiency of gas extraction by high drilling, the layout parameters of drilling holes in Pingdingshan coal mine are optimized. Based on the analysis and calculation of the "three zones" of the movement towards the overly strata of No.10 coal in Pingdingshan coal mine, the height of caving zone and fissure zone in 24,130 working face are 10.06–14.46 m and 38.75–49.95 m respectively. The elevation angle, azimuth angle and the length of high-level boreholes are studied and analyzed by COMSOL numerical simulation software. The simulation results show that the optimum layout parameters of high-level boreholes are as follows: The elevation angle of borehole should be controlled at 9°–12°, the azimuth angle should be 30°–45°, and the length of borehole should be 150 m. Then the optimum layout parameters of high-level boreholes are determined for engineering application of 24,130 working face. Borehole data onto actual mine show that the optimum layout parameters of high-level boreholes were elevation angle between 8°and 11°, azimuth angle between 30° and 42°, and length of boreholes between 145 and 155 m. The simulation results are basically consistent with the measured data. The maximum gas concentration in working face, upper corner and return air roadway is stably controlled below 1%. The safe mining of 24,130 working face is ensured, which provided a certain reference value of gas control in the goaf of Pingdingshan mine and adjacent mines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To better understand water inrushes originating from shaft-freezing holes, the hydrogeological conditions and water source were analyzed for a typical inrush case in the Yingpanhao coal mine in western China. The mechanism of this new type of water inrush was identified by considering the stratum movement caused by mining, the concentric annular channels of freezing holes, and the dynamic recharge of multiple aquifers. A new risk assessment model and corresponding grouting method were developed and the problems involving the prediction of water inrush and selection of the optimum grouting position were described. Detailed guidelines for grouting, including the layout of injection boreholes, slurries, grouting pressure and stopping criteria, were proposed. A grouting case targeting this type of water inrush in the Yingpanhao coal mine was introduced. Field studies indicated that open, concentric annular freezing hole channels provide favorable conditions for groundwater migration. The proposed method may effectively inhibit groundwater migration in multiple aquifers and prevent water inrushes through shaft freezing holes and provides an appropriate framework for water inrush prevention for similar mining areas in western China.
