Purpose: To investigate if facial and dental satisfaction is related to body fat percentage and body weight satisfaction. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was applied to adolescents from a Private School in Southern Brazil containing sociodemographic (sex and age) and self-perception variables. Adolescents were asked about their perceptions concerning dental problems. Body fat percentage was collected using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: A total of 372 adolescents were examined. Most adolescents were satisfied with their dental (81.7%) and facial appearance (87.6%), while 39% of adolescents were satisfied with their body weight. Poisson regression model showed that adolescents who expressed satisfaction with their body weight (PR = 1.12, 95%CI 1.06–1.19) and were satisfied with their dental appearance (PR = 1.24, 95% CI 1.08–1.41) exhibited a positive association with facial satisfaction. Adolescents dissatisfied with dental color (PR = 0.88, 95%CI 0.80–0.97), those reporting dental pain (PR = 0.88, 95%CI 0.80–0.97), and individuals with obesity (PR = 0.91, 95%CI 0.83–0.99) demonstrated a decrease in facial satisfaction. Adolescents aged 16 to 19 years (PR = 1.08, 95% CI 1.01–1.15) and those satisfied with their facial appearance (PR = 1.20, 95%CI 1.01–1.43) exhibited a higher prevalence of dental satisfaction. Conversely, adolescents dissatisfied with dental color (PR = 0.74, 95% CI 0.66–0.82) and those with misaligned teeth (PR = 0.63, 95%CI 0.55–0.73) reported lower levels of dental satisfaction. Parametric g-formula analysis found that the association between body fat and facial satisfaction was mediated by body weight satisfaction (p = 0.001). Conclusions: While dental satisfaction was not influenced by corporeal characteristics, facial satisfaction was influenced by dental and body weight satisfaction. Purpose: Pulpectomy can be used for the management of deep dentinal carious lesions in primary teeth which can be restored. Mechanical preparation of root canals can be performed using hand or NiTi rotary files. However, this may cause dentinal stress and consequently dentinal microcracks. Hence, the aim was comparative evaluation of hand and rotary file systems on dentinal microcrack formation during pulpectomy procedure in primary teeth. Methods: 60 extracted primary molar teeth were selected comprising of 80 root canals. Simple random sampling was used to divide root canals into four groups (n = 20): Group A—Hedstrom file, Group B—Pro AF Baby Gold rotary, Group C—ProTaper Next rotary, and Group D—unprepared group. Assessment was conducted on presence or absence of microcracks using Chi square test (p < 0.05). Results: The total number of microcracks in Group A: one (5%), Group B: four (20%), Group C: nine (45%) and Group D: zero (0%) which was statistically significant (p = 0.002). At cervical third, the number of microcracks seen with Group A: one (5%), Group B: zero (0%), Group C: five (25%) and Group D: zero (0%) (p = 0.005). At the middle third, the number of microcracks seen in Group A: zero (0%), Group B: four (20%), Group C: four (20%) and Group D: zero (0%) (p = 0.029). Conclusion: The study concluded that dentinal microcracks are formed with both hand and rotary file systems in primary teeth. Reading difficulties during childhood often continue during adulthood and result in adverse effects. Multisensory instructional programs, which use combinations of mnemonics, are commonly used to teach literacy skills. Experiments 1 and 2 compared the efficacy, generalization, and maintenance of and preference for a letter sound intervention with young children. Experiment 1 compared the effects of within-stimulus pictures to kinesthetic movements, both combined with a traditional drill (TD) flashcard method, on letter–sound acquisition using a single subject multielement design in seven children ages 4 to 5 years old. Letter–sound acquisition in these seven students was compared to matched control participants who did not experience the intervention. Experiment 2 compared the effects of kinesthetic movements to pictures and movements, both combined with a TD flashcard method, on letter–sound acquisition using a single subject multielement design in three children ages 3 to 5 years old. In general, pairing letters with movements was the most efficacious method, but all interventions were more efficacious than no intervention. The number of letters correct during maintenance and generalization probes to more complex reading skills did not significantly differ between interventions in either experiment. Nevertheless, there was a significant difference between intervention and probe-only conditions on generalization effects. Efficacy of the intervention did not correspond with preference. Harmonic state estimation (HSE) is an useful technique for determining harmonic voltages and currents in electric power systems based on synchronized measurements and network impedances parameters. However, measurements and parameters data can be corrupted by gross errors yielding unsatisfactory estimation results. Despite recent methods have been proposed for HSE in power systems, there are few works considering both harmonic state variables and parameters estimation. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a generalized harmonic state estimation considering uncertain network parameters and synchronized measurements. In the proposed approach, harmonic voltage and current phasors are obtained by measurement units allocated along the system. Network parameters, such as line and load impedances, are treated as inequality constraints in an optimization problem formulation considering both system state variables and parameters to be determined by the proposed HSE. The main contribution of this research paper is the use of a deterministic approach for estimating both harmonic state variables and parameters with reduced estimation errors when compared with the traditional weighted least squares (WLS) technique. This paper proposes a model of the diffusion and electrical dynamics of lithium-polymer batteries through a lumped parameter approach. Discharge experiments were performed on a set of three battery cells using a programmable DC load. The resulting data sets were used to obtain several model parameters using different optimization approaches. A comparison of the performance of such optimization approaches to estimate the model parameters from experimental tests was also conducted. The resulting models had an overall good performance, proving that the chosen modeling approach applies to lithium-polymer batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Infective endocarditis poses many clinical and diagnostic challenge. The diagnosis of infective endocarditis is made by high index of clinical suspicion based on the American Heart Association modified Duke's criteria, and the main imaging modality of choice is echocardiography. Case presentation: Here, we reported a case of recurrent infective endocarditis revealed by FDG PET/CT study despite completion of antibiotics and negative on echocardiography. A 38-year-old female with history of double-valve replacement for aortic stenosis presented with 1-week history of chest pain, dyspnea and intermittent fever. She was treated with 5 weeks of antibiotic with IV Cephalexin for prosthetic valve endocarditis. The repeated blood culture after IV antibiotic was negative for infection. She represented again with episodes of palpitation. Post-treatment blood investigation showed normal leukocyte level with increasing CRP and Troponin T level. The repeated blood culture and transesophageal echo was negative. The F-18 FDG PET/CT showed a mild hypermetabolic focus at the inferior basal myocardial wall adjacent to the prosthetic valve, however not involving the paraaortic region which is likely secondary to ongoing inflamed myocardium. As the fear of another relapse of endocarditis, oral suppression antibiotic therapy was continued for another 6 months. Conclusions: This case report illustrates a patient with a prosthetic valve replacement detected by F-18 FDG PET/CT, which one could have overlooked an endocarditis if one had relied on transesophageal echo (TEE) alone. F-18 FDG PET/CT is a promising adjunctive tool in the diagnostic workup of patients with suspected IE, particularly prosthetic device endocarditis where the TEE sensitivity is lower. In our patient, the positive F-18 FDG PET/CT governs the subsequent therapeutic consequences which include adjustment of antibiotic and length of treatment, and it prevents unnecessary intervention. The release of ChatGPT in 2022 has generated extensive speculation about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact the capacity of institutions for higher learning to achieve their central missions of promoting learning and certifying knowledge. Our main questions were whether people could identify AI-generated text and whether factors such as expertise or confidence would predict this ability. The present research provides empirical data to inform these speculations through an assessment given to a convenience sample of 140 college instructors and 145 college students (Study 1) as well as to ChatGPT itself (Study 2). The assessment was administered in an online survey and included an AI Identification Test which presented pairs of essays: In each case, one was written by a college student during an in-class exam and the other was generated by ChatGPT. Analyses with binomial tests and linear modeling suggested that the AI Identification Test was challenging: On average, instructors were able to guess which one was written by ChatGPT only 70% of the time (compared to 60% for students and 63% for ChatGPT). Neither experience with ChatGPT nor content expertise improved performance. Even people who were confident in their abilities struggled with the test. ChatGPT responses reflected much more confidence than human participants despite performing just as poorly. ChatGPT responses on an AI Attitude Assessment measure were similar to those reported by instructors and students except that ChatGPT rated several AI uses more favorably and indicated substantially more optimism about the positive educational benefits of AI. Background: Budd–Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a rare condition, usually associated with hematological disorders such as thrombotic diathesis and hypercoagulability. Serum CA-125 level is an established tumor marker of ovarian malignancy; however, cases of primary BCS may also show raised CA-125 levels. BCS in a case of ovarian carcinoma is usually primary in nature due to hypercoagulable state, and raised CA-125 levels with tender hepatomegaly in a treated case of ovarian carcinoma usually imply metastatic recurrence in the liver. However, our case demonstrates an atypical secondary cause of BCS in such a patient caused by extrinsic compression of IVC due to recurrent disease. Case presentation: We report an unusual case of a 69-year-old female who presented with nausea and abdominal pain. She had a 7-year-old history of endometrioid carcinoma of the right ovary for which she underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection along with adjuvant chemotherapy. Currently, she had right hypochondrium tenderness, deranged liver function tests (LFT) and raised CA-125 levels, which raised suspicion of hepatic metastasis. However, CECT abdomen revealed peripheral mottled enhancement of liver with multifocal extrahepatic tumor deposits, one of them causing compression of inferior vena cava (IVC) implying a diagnosis of secondary Budd–Chiari syndrome. Conclusions: In a background of treated ovarian malignancy with raised CA-125 levels and deranged LFT, primary suspicion is of hepatic tumor recurrence. However, in our case, radiological investigation revealed diagnosis of secondary Budd–Chiari syndrome due to perihepatic metastatic recurrence with the absence of frank intrahepatic lesions. Background: Low grip strength and gait speed are associated with mortality. However, investigation of the additional mortality risk explained by these measures, over and above other factors, is limited. Aim: We examined whether grip strength and gait speed improve discriminative capacity for mortality over and above more readily obtainable clinical risk factors. Methods: Participants from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study, Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study, and the Hertfordshire Cohort Study were analysed. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) was ascertained using DXA; muscle strength by grip dynamometry; and usual gait speed over 2.4–6 m. Verified deaths were recorded. Associations between sarcopenia components and mortality were examined using Cox regression with cohort as a random effect; discriminative capacity was assessed using Harrell's Concordance Index (C-index). Results: Mean (SD) age of participants (n = 8362) was 73.8(5.1) years; 5231(62.6%) died during a median follow-up time of 13.3 years. Grip strength (hazard ratio (95% CI) per SD decrease: 1.14 (1.10,1.19)) and gait speed (1.21 (1.17,1.26)), but not ALM index (1.01 (0.95,1.06)), were associated with mortality in mutually-adjusted models after accounting for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, ethnicity, education, history of fractures and falls, femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), self-rated health, cognitive function and number of comorbidities. However, a model containing only age and sex as exposures gave a C-index (95% CI) of 0.65(0.64,0.66), which only increased to 0.67(0.67,0.68) after inclusion of grip strength and gait speed. Conclusions: Grip strength and gait speed may generate only modest adjunctive risk information for mortality compared with other more readily obtainable risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine the variation of OXIS contact areas in primary molars using digital impressions generated from an intraoral scanner (IOS). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 214 caries-free posterior quadrants of 80 children (38 males and 42 females) aged 3–6 years. Calibration of taking digital impressions with the IOS procedure was performed initially through scanning of ten quadrants of children to provide a learning environment to the examiner. The digital impressions were then exported, and the type of interproximal contact areas present between the distal surface of the primary first molar and the mesial surface of the primary second molar were identified according to the OXIS classification. The prevalence of the types of OXIS contact areas was expressed in the form of numbers and percentages. The chi-square test was applied to investigate the variability among the arches and to understand the association of OXIS contact areas across age, gender, and arches. Results: The most common contact area type observed was I-type (59.8%), followed by S-type (15.4%), X-type (12.6%), and O-type (12.2%). The I-type contact area was most frequently seen in both males (51.6%) and females (65.5%), while the S-type contact area in males (14.7%) and X-type contact area in females (8.4% each) were the least frequent with no statistical significance between genders (p > 0.05). All three age groups studied showed the highest prevalence of the I-type contact area, which increased with an increase in age (p < 0.05). The inter-arch comparison showed a significant result in terms of the X-type contact area on the right side, and O-type, X-type, and I-type contact areas on the left side, while no statistical difference was seen in the intra-arch comparison for all contact types. Aim: To investigate the prevalence of tooth agenesis and associated dental anomalies in Latvian adolescent dental patients and compare it to other European countries. Design: Cross-sectional study of 2692 11-to-14-year-old patients (39.9% males and 60.1% females) attending Riga Stradins University Institute of Stomatology with panoramic radiographs taken between August 2020 and September 2021. Patients with any genetic syndromes were excluded. Data on tooth agenesis (excluding third molars) and other dental anomalies were recorded. Results: The prevalence of tooth agenesis in Latvian adolescent dental patients was 9.3% with no statistically significant difference between genders (χ2 test, p = 0.472). The most commonly missing teeth were mandibular second premolars, followed by upper lateral incisors and upper second premolars. There was a statistically significant association with the presence of other dental anomalies in tooth agenesis patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study found that the prevalence of non-syndromic tooth agenesis in Latvian adolescent dental patients was 9.3% with no statistically significant differences between the genders. Purpose: To investigate the in vitro biocompatibility of human gingival fibroblasts with preformed paediatric crowns and resistance to acid exposure at levels that simulate the oral environment. Methods: This laboratory study investigated primary HGFs viability, metabolic activity, cytotoxicity, and apoptotic events on preformed metal crown discs, composite resin-coated wells, and monolithic zirconia fragments at 24, 48, and 72 h using the ApoTox-Glo Triplex assay. The PPCs were also immersed in 0.1% lactic acid, 0.2% phosphoric acid, or 10% citric acid for 7 days at 37 °C to reproduce conditions associated with dietary intake or gastric reflux. Samples were then subject to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry to quantitate the release of ions. Results: The viability of HGFs on stainless steel and CR significantly declined at 48 and 72 h, representing potential cytotoxicity (p < 0.05). Cytotoxicity of HGFs was also higher for stainless steel and ZR compared to control (p < 0.05). PMCs and ZR crowns gave minimal ion release. Meanwhile, significant quantities of metallic ions, including copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), were present in eluates from veneered-preformed metal crowns. Conclusion: As PPCs can be exposed to highly acidic environments for many years, thus the release of metallic ions from V-PMCs should form the further investigation in future studies. Purpose: To analyse the evolution of the oral health of 4-year-old children in nursery school between 2001 and 2018 as well as the early predictor and associated risk factors, in different school areas. Methods: We compared (1) the prevalence of ECC (4 ≥ dmft ≥ 1) and S-ECC (dmft ≥ 5) of 4-year-old children and (2) data obtained by a structured questionnaire completed by their parents from two studies performed in 2001 and 2018. Data were analysed using the Chi2 test and odds ratio (OR). Results: A total of 322 children and of 425 children randomly selected among Moselle's public nursery schools in north-eastern France were, respectively, included in the study in 2001 and 2018. The prevalence of ECC was respectively 40.70% and 21.65% in 2001 and 2018 (p < 0.001; OR = 2.48; 95% CI = 1.78–3.47). We also observed a decrease of S-ECC prevalence (10.56% in 2001 vs 5.90% in 2018, p < 0.05, OR = 1.89; 95% CI = 1.07–3.38). The intake of cariogenic food (sweet drink, biscuits, candies, milk, baby bottle) decreased but the knowledge of parents concerning cariogenic food did not improve. The proportion of parents helping their child has not changed in 17 years (82.33% vs 86.52%, p > 0.1) but tooth brushing was initiated earlier in 2018 than in 2001 (p < 0.01). Prescription of systemic fluoride decreased (39.14% vs 3.62%; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The identification of the food consumption habits and the knowledge of parents concerning oral health should enable strengthening of preventive measures and the initiation of an oral health education programme for children and their family. Purpose: To evaluate the proximal caries progression in primary molars using the radiographic International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). Methods: A study was conducted on 196 children aged 3–9 years old who underwent the clinical examination and bitewing radiography during baseline and 6-month (and over) follow-up visits. The primary molars bitewing radiographs with initial enamel caries (RA1 and RA2) or outer dentine caries (RA3) of proximal surfaces were included. Caries advancement was scored using ICDAS criteria and statistical analyses with the chi-square test. Median survival time was evaluated using Kaplan–Meier survival curves and log-rank tests. Results: A total of 439 surfaces of primary molars were included in this study and an averaged follow-up period of enamel and dentine caries group were 18.3 ± 9.6 months and 16.5 ± 9.5 months respectively. The progression of proximal enamel lesions significantly differed between primary maxillary and mandibular molars (p = 0.002) and among each patient's primary mandibular second molar and the others (p = 0.002). On the contrary, the outer dentine caries of each group of primary molars was not different. The median survival time of the initial enamel proximal caries (23.30 months) was non-significantly longer than that of the dentine (20.80 months). Conclusions: Progressions of the initial enamel proximal caries were significantly different among primary molars at the average 18.3-month follow-up. The median survival period of the enamel proximal caries was more extended than that of dentine but without statistical difference. Purpose: This umbrella review aimed to critically appraise the evidence published in systematic reviews (SRs) on the clinical effectiveness of sealants compared with each other/the non-use in primary/permanent teeth of children and adolescents with at least 12-month follow-up. Methods: A systematic literature search on 4 electronic databases was conducted up to January 18th, 2023. Following handsearching, two review authors independently screened retrieved articles, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias (RoB) using the risk of bias in systematic reviews (ROBIS) tool. Based on a citation matrix, the overlap was interpreted by the corrected covered area (CCA). Results: Of 239 retrieved records, 7 SRs met the eligibility criteria with a moderate overlap among them (CCA = 7.4%). For primary molars, in 1120 1.5- to 8-year-old children, data on the clinical effectiveness of sealants were inconclusive. For permanent molars, 3 SRs found a significant caries risk reduction for sealants versus non-use (≤ 36-month follow-up). There was insufficient evidence to proof superiority of sealants over fluoride varnish for caries prevention (3 SRs), and to rank sealant materials according to the best clinical effectiveness in permanent molars. One study was rated at low and 6 at high RoB, which did not allow for a valid quantitative synthesis. Conclusion: Considering the limitations of this umbrella review, sealants are more effective for caries prevention in children's permanent molars compared to no treatment. Future well-implemented RCTs are needed to draw reliable conclusions on the clinical effectiveness of sealants in primary and permanent teeth of children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both the identity and prevalence of parasitoid dipterans associated with bumble bees (Bombus spp.) in southern South America are little known. Between 2009 and 2017, a total of 2978 bumble bees were individually collected in 63 localities from 11 provinces of the country. After dissections, the presence of parasitoids was observed in the native bumble bees Bombus pauloensis, B. bellicosus, B. opifex, and B. brasiliensis, plus in the exotic invasive species B. terrestris. A combination of both morphological and molecular analysis based on the COI gene allowed the isolation of two species of Physocephala (Conopidae) and one of Helicobia (Sarcophagidae), expanding their host range and geographic distribution.
