The purpose of this paper is to investigate the utilization of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in learning models that address the nonlinear anisotropic flow and hysteresis retention behavior of deformable porous materials. Herein, the micro‐geometries of various networks of porous Bentheimer Sandstones subjected to several degrees of strain from the literature are considered. For the generation of the database required for the training, validation, and testing of the machine learning (ML) models, single‐phase and biphasic lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulations are performed. The anisotropic nature of the intrinsic permeability is investigated for the single‐phase LB simulations. Thereafter, the database contains the computed average fluid velocities versus the pressure gradients. In this database, the range of applied fluid pressure gradients includes Darcy as well as non‐Darcy flows. The generated output from the single‐phase flow simulations is implemented in a feed‐forward neural network, representing a path‐independent informed graph‐based model. Concerning the two‐phase LB simulations, the Shan‐Chen multiphase LB model is used to generate the retention curves of the cyclic drying/wetting processes in the deformed porous networks. Consequently, two different ML path‐dependent approaches, that is, 1D convolutional neural network and the recurrent neural network, are used to model the biphasic flow through the deformable porous materials. A comparison in terms of accuracy and speed of training between the two approaches is presented. Conclusively, the outcomes of the papers show the capability of the ML models in representing constitutive relations for permeability and hysteretic retention curves accurately and efficiently. The aptness of machine learning (ML) to learn from large datasets, discover trends, and make predictions has demonstrated its potential to metamorphose the medical field. Medical data analysis with ML algorithms can improve patient outcomes in terms of both treatment and diagnosis. The most recent and precise biological and healthcare knowledge is critical in the current outbreak such as COVID. In today's small world, everyone needs timely and appropriate medical information to prevent contagious diseases. Extraction of important information from medical conversations and dissemination to patients and doctors may benefit in the treatments of doctor tiredness and patient amnesia. Problem: Automatic text summarizing is essential for gaining great knowledge in any topic in an efficient and productive manner. The material included in health records is vital to our understanding of kind illness and its manifestations. Creating a comprehensive and standard kind of content is becoming an unavoidable and crucial problem in the medical process as a result of the massive amounts of fragmented data created in many sectors. Approach: The purpose of this study is to employ NLP‐based deep learning algorithms for text summary that perform well on linguistic text summarization data, and then modify/adapt these for biomedical domain‐specific text summarization. This paper provides an approach developed in‐house for condensing ill‐punctuated or unpunctuated discussion transcripts into more intelligible summaries, which combines topic modelling and phrase selection with punctuation restorations. For autonomous synthesis of medical reports from biomedical transcripts, this research proposes using an end‐to‐end summarization technique, Deep Dense Long Short Term Memory Network (LSTM), followed by Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Results: Extensive testing, examination, and comparing have demonstrated that this summarizer works well for medical transcript summarization. The suggested approach achieved an average ROUGE score of 93.5% using a single document summary. Furthermore, by comparing new techniques to previous ones, the utility and accuracy of novel strategies would be shown. The crucial part of the software development cycle is software maintenance. The demands included in the software management are fault fixes and request to change or bring a new feature. If priority is not given to these demands, then it may lead to customer dissatisfaction, inefficient planning, and software failure as well. Therefore, it is important to study the severity of the bug reports to maintain the efficiency of the software. Various research has been conducted in the past to predict the severity of the paper using text mining focusing only on the content of the bug reports. The sentiment of the user while reporting a bug also plays a vital role. In this study, we will be focusing on two aspects, that is, sentiment and content to improve the prediction. We propose a prediction model based on LDA to study the content aspect and emotion analysis to study the sentiment aspect. The model is validated on the datasets collected from the Eclipse project using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The results show that the CNN model effectively utilizes the content and sentiment aspect of the data to handle the severity prediction. CNN has weight sharing feature that decreases the number of parameters used for training. It also improves generalization and overfitting is avoided The Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F‐measure are improved when both aspects are taken into account rather than considering only content. As one of the classic tasks in information retrieval, the core of image retrieval is to identify the images sharing similar features with a query image, aiming to enable users to find the required information from a large number of images conveniently. Street view image retrieval, in particular, finds extensive applications in many fields, such as improvements to navigation and mapping services, formulation of urban development planning scheme, and analysis of historical evolution of buildings. However, the intricate foreground and background details in street view images, coupled with a lack of attribute annotations, render it among the most challenging issues in practical applications. Current image retrieval research mainly uses the visual model that is completely dependent on the image visual features, and the multimodal learning model that necessitates additional data sources (e.g., annotated text). Yet, creating annotated datasets is expensive, and street view images, which contain a large amount of scene texts themselves, are often unannotated. Therefore, this paper proposes a deep unsupervised learning algorithm that combines visual and text features from image data for improving the accuracy of street view image retrieval. Specifically, we employ text detection algorithms to identify scene text, utilize the Pyramidal Histogram of Characters encoding predictor model to extract text information from images, deploy deep convolutional neural networks for visual feature extraction, and incorporate a contrastive learning module for image retrieval. Upon testing across three street view image datasets, the results demonstrate that our model holds certain advantages over the state‐of‐the‐art multimodal models pre‐trained on extensive datasets, characterized by fewer parameters and lower floating point operations. This paper provides a method for improving the photovoltaic conversion efficiency and optical attributes of silicon solar cells manufactured from as‐cut boron doped p‐type multi‐crystalline silicon wafers using acid‐based chemical texturization via machine learning. A decreased reflectance, which can be attained by the right chemical etching conditions, is one of the key elements for raising solar cell efficiency. In this work, the mc‐Silicon wafer surface reflectance is obtained under (<2%) after optimization of wet chemical etching. The HF + HNO3 + CH3COOH chemical etchant is used in the ratio 1:3:2 at different conditions of the etching duration of 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, and 4 min, respectively. The as‐cut boron doped p‐type mc‐silicon wafers are analysed with ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, optical microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, thickness profilometer, and scanning electron microscopy before and after etching. The chemical etching solution produces good results in 3 min etched wafer, with a reflectivity value of <2%.The reflectivity and optical images are inputs to the convolutional neural network model and the linear regression model to obtain the etching rate for better reflectivity. The main objective of this paper is to analyse whether the Transformer neural network, which has become one of the most influential algorithms in Artificial Intelligence over the last few years, exhibits predictive capabilities for high‐frequency Forex data. The prediction task is to classify short‐term Forex movements for six currency pairs and five different time intervals from 60 to 720 min. We find that the Transformer exhibits high predictive power in the context of intraday Forex trading. This performance is slightly better than for the carefully selected benchmark – ResNet‐LSTM, which currently is a state‐of‐the‐art algorithm. Since intraday Forex trading based on deep learning models is largely unexplored, we offer insight on which currency pair and time interval are amenable to devising a profitable trading strategy. We also show that high predictive accuracy can be misleading in real world trading for short time intervals, as models trained on OHLC data tend to report the highest accuracy when the spread cost is the highest. This renders assessment based on typical machine learning metrics overly optimistic. Therefore, it is critical to backtest frequent intraday Forex trading strategies with realistic cost assumptions, which is rarely the case in empirical literature. Lastly, sensitivity analysis shows that the length of the time interval used for training does not play a critical role in the Transformer's predictive capabilities, whereas features derived from technical analysis are essential. Frozen sections are a useful pathologic tool, but variable image quality may impede the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in their interpretation. We aimed to identify the current research on machine learning models trained or tested on frozen section images. We searched PubMed and Web of Science for articles presenting new machine learning models published in any year. Eighteen papers met all inclusion criteria. All papers presented at least one novel model trained or tested on frozen section images. Overall, convolutional neural networks tended to have the best performance. When physicians were able to view the output of the model, they tended to perform better than either the model or physicians alone at the tested task. Models trained on frozen sections performed well when tested on other slide preparations, but models trained on only formalin‐fixed tissue performed significantly worse across other modalities. This suggests not only that machine learning can be applied to frozen section image processing, but also use of frozen section images may increase model generalizability. In this paper, a novel model with a parallel structure is proposed to predict NOx emissions from coal‐fired boilers by using historical operational data, coal properties, and convolutional neural networks. The model inputs are processed and passed into three parallel subnetworks with well‐designed building blocks. The features learned by the three subnetworks are fused and used to predict NOx emissions from a 330‐MW pulverized coal‐fired utility boiler. A comprehensive comparison of different prediction models based on deep learning algorithms shows that the prediction model proposed in this paper outperforms other prediction models in terms of root mean square error criteria. The results show that the parallel structure is key to obtaining accurate predictions while reducing model complexity. In forensic practice, evaluating shoeprint evidence is challenging because the differences between images of two different outsoles can be subtle. In this paper, we propose a deep transfer learning‐based matching algorithm called the Shoe‐MS algorithm that quantifies the similarity between two outsole images. The Shoe‐MS algorithm consists of a Siamese neural network for two input images followed by a transfer learning component to extract features from outsole impression images. The added layers are finely tuned using images of shoe soles. To test the performance of the method we propose, we use a study dataset that is both realistic and challenging. The pairs of images for which we know ground truth include (1) close non‐matches and (2) mock‐crime scene pairs. The Shoe‐MS algorithm performed well in terms of prediction accuracy and was able to determine the source of pairs of outsole images, even when comparisons were challenging. When using a score‐based likelihood ratio, the algorithm made the correct decision with high probability in a test of the hypothesis that images had a common source. An important advantage of the proposed approach is that pairs of images can be compared without alignment. In initial tests, Shoe‐MS exhibited better‐discriminating power than existing methods. This paper's primary goal is to diagnose COVID‐19 contamination based on the artificial intelligence approach automatically. We used convolutional neural network deep learning algorithm for analyzing the ECG images to detect cardiac abnormalities, consequent of the contamination by the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus, responsible for the COVID‐19 epidemic. We designed, trained, and evaluated the performance of two deep learning models (MobileNetV2 and VGG16) in detecting and distinguishing between two different classes (healthy subjects and COVID‐19 positive cases). Indeed, this virus attacks the human respiratory system, which could affect the heart system. Thus, developing a deep learning model could help for a quick and efficient diagnosis, prediction, and physician decision‐making. The performed deep learning model will be used for predicting abnormal cardiac activities consequent to the contamination by the virus. The overall classification rate achieved by the models was 99.34% and 99.67% for MobileNetV2 and VGG16, respectively. Alzheimer's disorder (AD) causes permanent impairment in the brain's memory of the cellular system, leading to the initiation of dementia. Earlier detection of Alzheimer's disease in the initial stages is challenging for researchers. Deep learning and machine learning‐based techniques can help resolve many issues associated with brain imaging exploration. Brain MR Images (Brain‐MRI) are used to detect Alzheimer's in computable research work. To correctly categorize the stages of Alzheimer's disease, discriminative features need to be extracted from the MR images. Recently, many studies have used deep learning methods for the early detection of this disorder. However, overfitting degrades the deep learning method's performance because the dataset's selection images are smaller and imbalanced. Some studies could not reach more discriminative and effectual attention‐aware features for Alzheimer's stage classification to increase the model performance. In this paper, we develop a novel hierarchical residual attention learning‐inspired multistage conjoined twin network (HRAL‐CTNN) to classify the stages of Alzheimer's. We used augmentation approaches to scale insufficient and imbalanced data. The HRAL‐CTNN is efficiently overcoming the issues of not obtaining efficient attention‐aware and generative features for Alzheimer's stage classification. The proposed model solved the problem of redundant features by extracting attentive discriminant features, and scaling imbalance data by data augmentation, after that training and validation using HRAL‐CTNN. The execution of this proposed work has been performed on the ADNI MRI dataset. This work achieved outstanding accuracy of 99.97 ±$$ \pm $$ 0.01% and F1 score of 99.30 ±$$ \pm $$ 0.02% for Alzheimer's stage classification. With the surge of searching and reading online health‐based articles, maintaining the quality and credibility of online health‐based articles has become crucial. The circulation of deceptive health information on numerous social media sites can mislead people and can potentially cause adverse effects on people's health. To address these problems, this work uses deep learning approaches to automate the assessment and scoring of online health‐related articles' credibility. The paper proposed an Attention‐based Recurrent Multichannel Convolutional Neural Network (ARMCNN) model. The proposed model incorporates a BiLSTM layer, a multichannel CNN layer, and an attention layer and predicts the credibility of online health information. To perform a reliable evaluation of the presented model, we utilize the health articles reviewed by the experts, compiled in a labeled dataset termed "Pubhealth," which consists of thousands of health articles. The results are evaluated using five performance measures, accuracy, precision, recall, f1‐score, and area under the ROC curve (AUC). Furthermore, we extensively compared the proposed model with different deep learning and machine learning models such as Long short‐term memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM, CNN (Convolutional neural network), and RNN‐CNN. The experimental results showed that the proposed model produced state‐of‐the‐art performance on the used dataset by achieving an accuracy of 0.88, precision of 0.92, recall of 0.87, f1‐score of 0.90, and AUC of 0.94. It has been widely recognized that tropical cyclone (TC) genesis requires favorable large‐scale environmental conditions. Based on these linkages, numerous efforts have been made to establish an empirical relationship between seasonal TC activities and large‐scale environmental favorability in a quantitative way, which lead to conceptual functions such as the TC genesis index. However, due to the limited amount of reliable TC observations and complexity of the climate system, a simple analytic function may not be an accurate portrait of the empirical relationship between TCs and their ambiences. In this research, we use convolution neural networks (CNNs) to disentangle this complex relationship. To circumvent the limited amount of seasonal TC observation records, we implement transfer‐learning technique to train ensemble of CNNs first on suites of high‐resolution climate model simulations with realistic seasonal TC activities and large‐scale environmental conditions, and then on a state‐of‐the‐art reanalysis from 1950 to 2019. The trained CNNs can well reproduce the historical TC records and yields significant seasonal prediction skills when the large‐scale environmental inputs are provided by operational climate forecasts. Furthermore, by inputting the ensemble CNNs with 20th century reanalysis products and Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) simulations, we investigated TC variability and its changes in the past and future climates. Specifically, our ensemble CNNs project a decreasing trend of global mean TC activity in the future warming scenario, which is consistent with our future projections using high‐resolution climate model. Pioneer studies show that these conducive conditions include warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs), sufficient low‐level vorticities and mid‐level humilities, as well as weak‐to‐moderate vertical wind shears. Several follow‐up studies have focused on improving the empirical linkage between number of TC and environmental conditions and developed sets of TC genesis index based on conventional statistical methods. Although these indices can capture climatology of TC genesis spatial distributions and seasonal variation reasonably well, their representations of interannual TC variability are degraded. With the aim to better represent TC interannual variability and long‐term trend using large‐scale environmental conditions, we trained ensembles of convolution neural networks (CNNs) based on the combination of observations and large sets of high‐resolution dynamical climate simulations. The trained CNNs perform significantly well in capturing observed TC interannual‐to‐multidecadal variability and are broadly applicable to many areas of seasonal TC activities. Deep learning algorithms represented by convolutional neural networks bring new opportunities for spectral analysis technology. Convolutional neural networks are more straightforward than traditional chemometric algorithms for detecting the quality of agricultural products, reducing the procedures of spectral preprocessing and band selection, and with higher prediction accuracy. However, there are few research papers on the relevance of the explanation of the convolutional neural networks model mechanism, and the reader cannot fully understand convolutional neural networks feature learning. In this study, convolutional neural networks combined with the subregional voting method were used to predict the moisture content of semen ziziphi spinosae. Firstly, 10 regions of interest were divided using the subregional voting method, and the results of network models were compared. It was found that the average spectrum of the fifth region of interest had the best prediction of moisture content because it was closest to the central region of semen ziziphi spinosae. Based on this, a convolutional neural network containing three convolutional layers, three pooling layers, and one fully connected layer is proposed. Partial least squares regression, backpropagation neural network, and convolutional neural networks were established to predict the moisture content of semen ziziphi spinosae. The correlation coefficient of the prediction set of the partial least squares regression is 0.98 after the multiplicative scatter correction preprocessed the spectra, and correlation coefficient of the prediction set of the backpropagation neural network is 0.83 after the standard normal variate preprocessed the spectra. The correlation coefficient of the prediction set of the convolutional neural networks established by using the raw spectra reached 0.99. The spectral preprocessing method can improve the prediction set correlation coefficient of partial least squares regression and backpropagation neural network. Still, it will reduce the prediction ability of convolutional neural networks. This study also analyzed the effect of different learning rates on the performance of convolutional neural networks, and it was found that the training loss and training accuracy performed most consistently when the learning rate was 0.01. Secondly, this study also visualized the output feature maps of the three convolutional layers of convolutional neural networks and verified the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks feature band extraction. This study provides new ideas for deep learning in the online detection of seed moisture content. The exploration and analyses of chemical components in (extra‐)terrestrial geological materials (such as asteroids and meteorites) are insightful in modern research. Laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LiBS) is a popular method for analyzing the chemical attributes of geologic samples—which scientists use to study and understand planetary bodies and their complex histories. In the literature, several machine learning models that produce high‐accuracy predictions have been proposed. In our work, we compared the performances of such models in predicting elemental abundances on a certain spectroscopic dataset. Models included partial least squares (PLS), extreme gradient boost machines (XGB), neural networks, and linear models. In our results, we showed how PLS and XGB are superior in terms of high predictive power, their ability to generalize, and their reasonably efficient runtimes. In addition, we proposed Ensemble models that aggregate predictions of top‐tier models and observed that they can be desirable. We intend to gain better understanding of how these models perform in predicting elemental compositions on specific spectrum (LIBS) datasets. In this paper, we compare several machine learning models to identify those who performed best in a specific spectroscopic datasets. The models investigated include partial least squares, Lasso regression, support vector regression, artificial and convolutional neural networks, and extreme gradient boosting machines. Plant diseases are common factors restricting crop yield and quality. For individuals without training, it is still difficult to identify various diseases accurately because many leaf diseases are similar in colour, shape and other aspects. Requiring an expert diagnosis can cause delays and lead to increasing costs. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved convolutional neural network for recognition of tomato leaf diseases. The experimental dataset was from the publicly available dataset PlantVillage. Based on the original ResNet18 model, a new convolutional neural network, TomatoNet, was constructed by adding a squeeze‐and‐excitation module and modifying the classifier structure. The results show that the average recognition accuracy of the TomatoNet network is 99.63%, which is 0.53% higher than the ResNet18 network. In addition, the recognition accuracy improved from 88.97% to 98.35% after the improvement of the AlexNet network. Finally, the superiority of TomatoNet was verified by comparison with other advanced models. This experiment verifies the feasibility of a deep learning algorithm for plant leaf disease recognition, which can provide a more efficient and convenient solution for detecting plant leaf disease. Energy is essential to sustain life and development and to fulfill daily requirements. A clean source of energy like the Solar Chimney Power Plant (SCPP) is essential or hybridized with conventional sources to meet the demand. Also, it will provide energy during the night and it will reduce the need and expense of physical batteries in comparison to the photovoltaic energy storage system. In this paper, a mathematical study has been done for the generation of 10 MW power from the SCPP. This paper optimized the core parameter of SCPP such as chimney height and collector radius under different operating conditions. It has been evaluated on the basis of data produced by the developed mathematical model. The current research work highlights the modern application of state‐of‐the‐art Deep Learning (DL) techniques that is, Functional Link Convolutional Neural Network (FLCNN) to map developed mathematical models. The proposed FLCNN is compared with various other Machine Learning algorithms including Support Vector Regression, K‐Nearest Neighbors, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, and Multilayer Perceptron. Proposed FLCNN performed efficiently and achieved 91% and 93% of Adjusted R2 score for predicting values of collector radius and chimney height, respectively, which is comparable to other ML algorithms. This main intention of this paper is to adopt a new disease detection model for plant leaves. The proposed model involves several steps such as pre‐processing, leaf segmentation, abnormality segmentation, feature extraction and detection. Image scaling and contrast enhancement are performed during the pre‐processing phase. Once the pre‐processing is done, the segmentation phase starts with leaf segmentation by binary thresholding method and abnormality segmentation by K‐means clustering. Further, the local binary pattern and grey‐level co‐occurrence matrix features are extracted and a dimensionality reduced technique called principle component analysis is determined. As the main novelty, the weighted feature extraction is performed, in which the weight functions are optimized by the self‐adaptive deer hunting optimization (SA‐DHOA). Another contribution of this paper is to implement a hybrid classifier for disease detection. Here, the extracted weighted features are subjected to a support vector machine, and the abnormality segmented image is subjected to convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a deep learning algorithm that can learn the features automatically. With the development of Raman spectroscopy and the expansion of its application domains, conventional methods for spectral data analysis have manifested many limitations. Exploring new approaches to facilitate Raman spectroscopy and analysis has become an area of intensifying focus for research. It has been demonstrated that machine learning techniques can more efficiently extract valuable information from spectral data, creating unprecedented opportunities for analytical science. This paper outlines traditional and more recently developed statistical methods that are commonly used in machine learning (ML) and ML‐algorithms for different Raman spectroscopy‐based classification and recognition applications. The methods include Principal Component Analysis, K‐Nearest Neighbor, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine, as well as neural network‐based deep learning algorithms such as Artificial Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks, etc. The bulk of the review is dedicated to the research advances in machine learning applied to Raman spectroscopy from several fields, including material science, biomedical applications, food science, and others, which reached impressive levels of analytical accuracy. The combination of Raman spectroscopy and machine learning offers unprecedented opportunities to achieve high throughput and fast identification in many of these application fields. Protecting deep‐sea coral‐based vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) from human impacts, particularly bottom trawling, is a major conservation challenge in world oceans. Management processes for these ecosystems are weakened by key uncertainties that could be substantially addressed by having much greater volumes of quantitative image‐derived data that detail the distribution and abundance of coral reefs and the nature of impacts upon them. Considerably greater volumes of data could be available if the resource costs of image annotation are reduced.In this paper we propose a solution: a deep learning system capable of automatically identifying reef‐building stony corals amongst other seabed substrata in much larger volumes of seabed imagery than was previously possible. Using a previously annotated dataset, we trained a convolutional neural network on approximately 70,000 classified images ('snips') comprising six benthic substrate classes, including reef‐building stony coral—'coral matrix'.Model performance improvements, chiefly by dataset cleaning, transfer learning and hyperparameter optimisation, resulted in the final trained model achieving validation accuracy of 98.19%. The classification was robust: benthic substrate types were accurately differentiated, and in some cases more consistently than was achieved by human annotators.Synthesis and applications. Objective: Facial expressions have been served as clinical symptoms to convey mental conditions in psychiatry. This paper proposes to recognize patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) using their facial images based on deep learning algorithm, and to investigate objective differences in facial expressions between SCZ patients and healthy controls using deep learning algorithm and statistical analyses. Methods: The study consists of two parts. The first part recruited 106 SCZ patients and 101 healthy controls, and videotaped their facial expressions through a fixed experimental paradigm. The video data were randomly divided into two sets, one for training a convolutional neural network (CNN) with the classification of "healthy control" or "SCZ patient" as output and the other for evaluating the classification result of the trained CNN. In the second part, all facial images of the recruited participants were put into another CNN separately, which was priorly trained with a facial expression database and will output the most likely facial expressions of the recruited participants. Statistical analyses were performed on the obtained facial expressions to find out the objective differences in facial expressions between the two recruited groups. Results: The trained CNN achieved an overall accuracy of 95.18% for classifying "healthy control" or "SCZ patient." Statistical results on the obtained facial expressions demonstrated that the objective differences between the two recruited groups were statistically significant (p <.05). Conclusions: Facial expressions hold great promise as SCZ clues with the help of deep learning algorithm. This paper proposes a micro‐Doppler radar‐based method to classify common pedestrians and pedestrians texting on a smartphone (called a smartphone zombies). We used a micro‐Doppler radar to collect motion data of the gait of participants texting on smartphones while walking, and then generated time‐frequency distribution images (spectrogram images). They were input into a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify gait patterns. Results using measured data confirmed that the classification accuracy exceeded 90%, validating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Surface defects in industrial refrigerator manufacturing processes can cause significant production losses and compromise product quality. This area is underexplored and currently, visual quality inspection is a subjective process that requires expert intervention, which limits process efficiency and can lead to errors in defect detection. This paper presents a novel approach for automatic surface defect detection using a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and deflectometry. The proposed method takes advantage of the high accuracy and robustness of CNNs in image classification tasks and the sensitivity of deflectometry to detect subtle surface variations. First, a prototype was built to get the images from the refrigerator. Second, using video recordings, we captured surface topographic data using deflectometry, which we then use to generate surface images. Next, we train a CNN to classify the surface images as defective or normal. The proposed method offers a promising solution for automatic detection and quality control of surface defects in refrigerator manufacturing processes. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide. In most cases, the misinterpretation of medical diagnosis plays a vital role in increased fatality rates due to breast cancer. Breast cancer can be diagnosed by classifying tumors. There are two different types of tumors, such as malignant and benign tumors. Identifying the type of tumor is a tedious task, even for experts. Hence, an automated diagnosis is necessary. The role of machine learning in medical diagnosis is eminent as it provides more accurate results in classifying and predicting diseases. In this paper, we propose a deep ensemble network (DEN) method for classifying and predicting breast cancer. This method uses a stacked convolutional neural network, artificial neural network and recurrent neural network as the base classifiers in the ensemble. The random forest algorithm is used as the meta‐learner for providing the final prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed DEN technique outperforms all the existing approaches in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F‐score and area under the curve (AUC) measures. The analysis of variance test proves that the proposed DEN model is statistically more significant than the other existing classification models; thus, the proposed approach may aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in women, hence aiding in the development of early treatment techniques to increase survival rate. Pests are the main threats to crop growth, and the precision classification of pests is conducive to formulating effective prevention and governance strategies. In response to the problems of low efficiency and inadaptability to the large‐scale environment of existing pest classification methods, this paper proposes a new pest classification method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) and an improved Vision Transformer model. First, the MMAlNet is designed to extract the characteristics of the identification object from different scales and finer granularity. Then, a classification model called DenseNet Vision Transformer (DNVT) combining a CNN and an improved vision transformer model is proposed. The proposed DNVT captures both long distance dependencies and local characteristic modelling capabilities, which can effectively improve pest classification accuracy. Finally, the ensemble learning algorithm is used to learn MMAlNet and DNVT classification forecasts for soft voting, further enhancing the classification accuracy of pests. The simulation experiment results on the D0 and IP102 datasets show that the proposed method attained a maximum classification of 99.89 and 74.20%, respectively, which is better than other state‐of‐the‐art methods and has a high practical application value. The detection of mathematical expressions is a prerequisite step for the digitisation of scientific documents. Many different multistage approaches have been proposed for the detection of expressions in document images, that is, page segmentation and expression detection. However, the detection accuracy of such methods still needs improvement owing to errors in the page segmentation of complex documents. This paper presents an end‐to‐end framework for mathematical expression detection in scientific document images without requiring optical character recognition (OCR) or document analysis techniques applied in conventional methods. The novelty of this paper is twofold. First, because document images are usually in binary form, the direct use of these images, which lack texture information as input for detection networks, may lead to an incorrect detection. Therefore, we propose the application of a distance transform to obtain a discriminating and meaningful representation of mathematical expressions in document images. Second, the transformed images are fed into the faster region with a convolutional neural network (Faster R‐CNN) optimized to improve the accuracy of the detection. The proposed framework was tested on two benchmark data sets (Marmot and GTDB). Compared with the original Faster R‐CNN, the proposed network improves the accuracies of detection of isolated and inline expressions by 5.09% and 3.40%, respectfully, on the Marmot data set, whereas those on the GTDB data set are improved by 4.04% and 4.55%. This paper plans to develop an intelligent super resolution model with the linkage of Wavelet lifting scheme and Deep learning algorithm. Before initiating the resolution procedure, the entire HR images are converted into Low Resolution (LR) images using bicubic interpolation‐based downsampling and upsampling. Further, the Wavelet lifting scheme helps to generate the four subbands of each image like LR wavelet Sub‐Bands for LR images, and High Resolution (HR) wavelet Sub‐Bands for HR images. The residual image is generated by taking the difference between the LR wavelet Sub‐Bands and HR wavelet Sub‐Bands images. The proposed model involves two main phases: Training phase and Testing. The training phase trains the residual image of all images by Deep Convolutional Neural Network with LR wavelet Sub‐Bands as input and residual image as target. On the other hand, in testing phase, the LR wavelet Sub‐Bands query image is subjected to Deep Convolutional Neural Network, which outputs the concerned residual image. This generated residual image is summed with LR wavelet Sub‐Bands image, followed by inverse wavelet lifting scheme to obtain the final super resolution image. The main contribution of this paper is to improve the conventional Deep Convolutional Neural Network by optimizing the number of hidden layer, and hidden neurons using modified Whale Optimization Algorithm called Average Fitness Enabled Whale Optimization Algorithm by considering the objective of maximizing the Peak Signal‐to‐Noise Ratio. Summary: In the presence of noise in communication systems, constellation diagram points are scattered to the extent that may make the modulation classification a difficult task. With the plethora of applications of machine and deep learning, several communication systems have adopted machine and deep learning to solve some classical detection and classification problems. Casting the modulation order detection as a pattern classification of the constellation images opens the door for application of mature machine learning and image processing tools to solve the classification problem, efficiently. This paper presents a system based on a wavelet‐aided convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier to efficiently detect the modulation type and order in the presence of noise. The proposed system depends on a pretrained CNN setup, which is trained with a set of constellation diagrams for each modulation scheme and used after that for testing. In addition, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is investigated to generate representative patterns from constellation diagrams to be used for the training and testing tasks as well. The wavelet approximation images and their corresponding wavelet sub‐bands across all predefined scales are used in the dataset. Several pretrained networks including AlexNet, VGG‐16, and VGG‐19 are used as classifiers for the modulation type from the DWTs for different constellation diagrams. Large bowel obstruction (LBO) occurs when there is a blockage or twisting in the large bowel that prevents wastes and gas from passing through. If left untreated, the blockage cuts off blood supply to the colon, causing sections of it to die which results in high rates of morbidity and fatality. The examination of clinical symptoms of LBO involves careful inspection of the cecum and colon. Radiologists use X‐rays to inspect the clinical signs. Some research has been done to automate the detection of related abdominal and intestinal diseases. However, all these studies concentrate only on detecting Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, Acute Appendicitis, colorectal cancer, celiac diseases, liver diseases, and chronic kidney diseases. Automatic detection and classification of LBO has not been given due attention so far to the best of the authors knowledge. To address this challenge, we have designed a model for the detection and classification of LBO. The models development comprises of stages such as preprocessing, detection, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification. We used YOLOv3 for detection and used a gray scale level co‐occurrence matrix (GLCM), and a convolutional neural network for feature extraction, while support vector machine (SVM) and softmax were used for classification. The proposed model achieved a diagnostic accuracy of 89% when feature extraction methods such as CNN and median filter with softmax classifier were used. CNN and Gaussian filter with soft max classifier achieved 91%, while CNN and anisotropic filter with soft max classifier achieved 92%. GLCM with threshold segmentation and Gaussian filter with SVM classifier achieved 87%, while CNN with watershed segmentation and Gaussian filter with SVM classifier achieved 97% and CNN‐GLCM with watershed segmentation and anisotropic diffusion filter with SVM classifier achieved 98% for detection and classification of LBO. Finally, this paper presented a performance analysis of various machine learning approaches for detection and classification of LBO. This paper discusses the automatic detection of mura, non‐uniformity of brightness or color, which has been a long‐standing challenge in the display industries. Our purpose is to develop a method using machine learning, which automatically detects and classifies mura in the front‐end process. This will enable prompt feedback to the manufacturing process and contribute to improvement of the productivity. We propose "Progressive Hybrid model," which is based on the human visual perception and consists of a multiclass CNN (Convolutional Neural Network), a 2‐class residual neural network, and a 2‐class CNN. The two 2‐class models based on the subspace method to reproduce the boundary‐samples in the human visible test are for accurate classification between Normal displays and weak mura. To reproduce the appropriate test‐images used in the human visible test, we enhance contrast of 8000 images of the dataset obtained from an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) manufacturing line. The evaluation results show improvement of the accuracy from 0.830 in the general application of CNN to 0.884 in the proposed model. The proposed model is particularly effective to improve classification of Normal displays, which is usually the most numerous in the manufacturing, and thus further beneficial in the practical use. Malaria is considered one of the deadliest diseases in today's world, which causes thousands of deaths per year. The parasites responsible for malaria are scientifically known as Plasmodium, which infects the red blood cells in human beings. Diagnosis of malaria requires identification and manual counting of parasitized cells in microscopic blood smears by medical practitioners. Its diagnostic accuracy is primarily affected by extensive scale screening due to the unavailability of resources. State of the art Computer‐Aided Diagnostic techniques based on deep learning algorithms such as CNNs, which perform an end to end feature extraction and classification, have widely contributed to various image recognition tasks. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of Mosquito‐Net, a custom made convnet to classify the infected and uninfected blood smears for malaria diagnosis. The CADx system can be deployed on IoT and mobile devices due to its fewer parameters and computation power, making it wildly preferable for diagnosis in remote and rural areas that lack medical facilities. Statistical analysis demonstrates that the proposed model achieves greater accuracy than the previous SOTA architectures for malaria diagnosis despite being 10 times lighter in parameters and inference time. Optimal sensor placement (OSP) is essential for effective structural health monitoring (SHM). More recently, deep learning algorithms have shown great potential in sensor‐based SHM. However, existing optimization frameworks, such as population‐based algorithms, are often not suited for data‐driven SHM. Evaluating a number of sensor layouts includes training on large datasets, which is computationally expensive. This paper proposes deep generative Bayesian optimization (DGBO) as a solution for a parallel optimization of black‐box/expensive OSP objective functions. Conditional variational autoencoders are leveraged as generative models that transform the OSP problem into a lower‐dimensional latent space. Additionally, DGBO utilizes a surrogate neural network to capture the probability distribution of the objective function space. The proposed method is validated on two case studies on a nine‐story reinforced concrete moment frame. The first one serves as a proof of concept to show that DGBO can find the global optimum configuration. The second case study aims to maximize the semantic damage segmentation (SDS) accuracy using a fully convolutional neural network. Transfer learning is proposed in training the vibration‐based SDS model, which reduces the evaluation times by more than 50%. Without compromising the performance, the number of accelerometers can be reduced by 52% and 43%, respectively, for damage location and severity predictions. It is also shown that DGBO can outperform genetic algorithm with the same number of function evaluations. Summary: Multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) technology is much significant for achieving high data rates while considering the multiuser communication. For this purpose, the estimation of Channel State Information (CSI) is performed by the pilot. But, the estimated CSI cannot be applied for downlinks while processing an extremely high speed mobile data as it gets outdated because of the rapid channel variation. Estimating the channel in the MIMO systems is highly difficult on using non‐stationary channel characteristics under the high mobility environments. Channel estimation with received signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) feedback ensures an effective performance in the practical wireless MIMO systems. This paper plans to develop an intelligent deep learning strategy to solve the channel estimation problem in MIMO system. The main goal of the proposed model is to estimate the MIMO channel coefficients at a transmitter based on the received SNR feedback information from a receiver using the swarm intelligence‐based deep ensemble learning machine (SI‐DELM). For both the scenarios, the SI‐DELM is developed, in which the convolution neural network (NN) with three classifiers is used. Here, the fully connected layers of CNN are replaced by the NN, recurrent neural network (RNN), and deep neural network (DNN). In the SI‐DEL‐based channel estimation, the hyper parameter tuning is performed by the adaptive iteration assisted mixture ratio‐based cat swarm optimization (AIMR‐CSO) for minimizing the mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) of the estimated channel. Finally, by performing numerical simulations, the efficiency and better performance of the suggested model is revealed by conducting the comparison between proposed and conventional models. Recently, the whole world was hit by COVID‐19 pandemic that led to health emergency everywhere. During the peak of the early waves of the pandemic, medical and healthcare departments were overwhelmed by the number of COVID‐19 cases that exceeds their capacity. Therefore, new rules and techniques are urgently required to help in receiving, filtering and diagnosing patients. One of the decisive steps in the fight against COVID‐19 is the ability to detect patients early enough and selectively put them under special care. Symptoms of this disease can be observed in chest X‐rays. However, it is sometimes difficult and tricky to differentiate "only" pneumonia patients from COVID‐19 patients. Machine‐learning can be very helpful in carrying out this task. In this paper, we tackle the problem of COVID‐19 diagnostics following a data‐centric approach. For this purpose, we construct a diversified dataset of chest X‐ray images from publicly available datasets and by applying data augmentation techniques. Then, we employ a transfer learning approach based on a pre‐trained convolutional neural network (DenseNet‐169) to detect COVID‐19 in chest X‐ray images. In addition to that, we employ Gradient‐weighted Class Activation Mapping (GradCAM) to provide visual inspection and explanation of the predictions made by our deep learning model. The results were evaluated against various metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value (PPV), Negative Predictive Value (NPV) and the confusion matrix. The cataract is the most common cause of severe vision impairment or blindness worldwide. A periodical diagnosis is recommended in order to prevent cataract severity, where screening might be feasibly ensured through fundus images. In this paper, we propose a CAD system to efficiently grade the cataract from fundus images. For such a need, an ensemble learning framework is put forward where the knowledge of three convolutional deep neural networks is stacked in order to perform an efficient cataract prediction. The main contributions of this work are given as follows: (1) Preprocessing and data augmentation of fundus images are carried out to ensure the robustness of the cataract grading; (2) The well‐known DL architectures (Inception‐V3, MobileNet‐V2 and NasNet‐Mobile) are fine‐tuned and learned as base classifiers; (3) An Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is performed as a meta classifier to stack the predictions of base classifiers. The evaluation is conducted using a dataset of 590 fundus images selected from two public databases. The suggested framework achieves 94.07% accuracy, 94.37% sensitivity, 93.62% specificity, 95.71% precision and 95.04% F‐measure for cataract grading. The experimentation proves that the proposed framework successfully grades fundus images into cataract severity. Exploiting portable Raman equipment to analyze the composition of mineral pigments has the advantages of convenience and speed. However, this method is more susceptible to ambient light, so it is necessary to develop an effective Raman spectrum identification method. Several studies have recently employed machine learning algorithms to automatically identify the Raman spectra of pigments and have revealed appealing results. Hence, in this paper, we propose a deep convolutional neural network that exploits portable Raman equipment to identify the components of white mineral pigments. Compared with classic methods, our technique achieved a higher matching rate of up to 98.7%. The experimental results show that the proposed method can analyze the composition of white mineral pigments in a real‐time, nondestructive, and accurate manner without requiring pretreatment of the spectra. Analyzing and interpreting traumatic injuries is a fundamental aspect of routine forensic case work. As the human skeleton can be impacted through a combination of loading mechanisms and varying impact energies, the analysis and interpretation of skeletal trauma can be complex. Therefore, it is imperative that the reliability of techniques used for analysis are well‐established. There is growing interest in machine learning (ML) in medicine (especially radiology) regarding the use of image classification (a subset of ML) to categorize and predict classes of medical images. Therefore, the feasibility of using image classification for skeletal trauma analysis should be explored for its benefits to forensic pathology and anthropology. The method explored in this paper examined the potential for machine learning, using three dimensional (3D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to assess whether morphological features of skeletal trauma to the femur can be used to differentiate between impact mechanisms within a forensic population. The objective of this study was to assess if morphological differences in femoral fractures seen in post‐mortem‐computed tomographic images (PMCT) could be categorized according to mechanism, specifically horizontal impacts resulting from pedestrian motor vehicle impacts (PMVIs) and vertical impact s resulting from high impact falls. Final model results indicated an accuracy between 69.95%–72.86% and 63.08%–66.24% validation. Although these results mean the method could not be practically used in its current form, as a proof of concept, there is potential for it to be developed as a tool to assist in classifying complex fracture states. Object detection has been in the focus of researchers within varying applications propelled by the recent advances in deep learning and neural networks. Many applications require both detection of class instances as well as a quantification of the spatial coverage of the class instances. While the performance of deep learning approaches for these tasks has been extensively studied there has not been much effort into creating a unified network structure to achieve both goals. The purpose of this paper is to present a regressor to the faster R‐CNN architecture that can help quantify the spatial coverage estimation of some detected object. The goal of the regressor is to provide a reproducible result of the spatial coverage. To demonstrate the developed architecture, an example use‐case of land cover estimation is used. The experiments conducted in this paper show that the network does not sacrifice object detection accuracy, and indicate that the network is able to estimate the spatial coverage of six different types of land. Deraining has been attracting a lot of attention from researchers, and various methods have been proposed, especially deep‐networks are widely adopted in recent years. Their structures and learning become more and more complicated and diverse, making it difficult to analyze the contributions and improvements. In this paper, a comprehensive review for current rain removal methods is first provided to show their contributions. Specifically, they are reviewed in terms of handing rain streaks and rain mist. Second, besides evaluating their rain removal ability, they are also evaluated in terms of their impact on subsequent stereo‐matching task. To this end, a new deraining dataset is first prepared, called Rain‐Kitti2012 and Rain‐Kitti2015. They are created by adding rain part to clean image‐pairs in Kitti2012 and Kitti2015. By then, nine state‐of‐the‐art deraining methods are evaluated with full‐reference and no‐reference image quality assessment metrics. Furthermore, the blurriness and distortion types introduced during deraining are measured. Finally, three learning‐based stereo matching methods are compared, and they take the outputs of deraining methods as inputs. It is further discussed how derained images influence the accuracy of stereo matching, which can provide some insight for jointly handling rain removal and stereo matching. 1: A comprehensive review for the current rain removal methods is provided. Purpose: Involuntary patient movement results in data discontinuities during computed tomography (CT) scans which lead to a serious degradation in the image quality. In this paper, we specifically address artifacts induced by patient motion during a head scan. Method: Instead of trying to solve an inverse problem, we developed a motion simulation algorithm to synthesize images with motion‐induced artifacts. The artifacts induced by rotation, translation, oscillation and any possible combination are considered. Taking advantage of the powerful learning ability of neural networks, we designed a novel 3D network structure with both a large reception field and a high image resolution to map the artifact‐free images from artifact‐contaminated images. Quantitative results of the proposed method were evaluated against the results of U‐Net and proposed networks without dilation structure. Thirty sets of motion contaminated images from two hospitals were selected to do a clinical evaluation. Result: Facilitating the training dataset with artifacts induced by variable motion patterns and the neural network, the artifact can be removed with good performance. Validation dataset with simulated random motion pattern showed outperformed image correction, and quantitative results showed the proposed network had the lowest normalized root‐mean‐square error, highest peak signal‐to‐noise ratio and structure similarity, indicating our network gave the best approximation of gold standard. Clinical image processing results further confirmed the effectiveness of our method. Conclusion: We proposed a novel deep learning‐based algorithm to eliminate motion artifacts. The convolutional neural networks trained with synthesized image pairs achieved promising results in artifacts reduction. The corrected images increased the diagnostic confidence compared with artifacts contaminated images. We believe that the correction method can restore the ability to successfully diagnose and avoid repeated CT scans in certain clinical circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deep learning is one of the most promising machine learning techniques that revolutionalized the artificial intelligence field. The known traditional and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been utilized in medical pattern recognition applications that depend on deep learning concepts. This is attributed to the importance of anomaly detection (AD) in automatic diagnosis systems. In this paper, the AD is performed on medical electroencephalography (EEG) signal spectrograms and medical corneal images for Internet of medical things (IoMT) systems. Deep learning based on the CNN models is employed for this task with training and testing phases. Each input image passes through a series of convolution layers with different kernel filters. For the classification task, pooling and fully‐connected layers are utilized. The remarkable successes of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in modern computer vision are by now well known, and they are increasingly being explored as computational models of the human visual system. In this paper, we ask whether CNNs might also provide a basis for modeling higher‐level cognition, focusing on the core phenomena of similarity and categorization. The most important advance comes from the ability of CNNs to learn high‐dimensional representations of complex naturalistic images, substantially extending the scope of traditional cognitive models that were previously only evaluated with simple artificial stimuli. In all cases, the most successful combinations arise when CNN representations are used with cognitive models that have the capacity to transform them to better fit human behavior. One consequence of these insights is a toolkit for the integration of cognitively motivated constraints back into CNN training paradigms in computer vision and machine learning, and we review cases where this leads to improved performance. A second consequence is a roadmap for how CNNs and cognitive models can be more fully integrated in the future, allowing for flexible end‐to‐end algorithms that can learn representations from data while still retaining the structured behavior characteristic of human cognition. Background: In the domain of natural language processing, Transformers are recognized as state‐of‐the‐art models, which opposing to typical convolutional neural networks (CNNs) do not rely on convolution layers. Instead, Transformers employ multi‐head attention mechanisms as the main building block to capture long‐range contextual relations between image pixels. Recently, CNNs dominated the deep learning solutions for diabetic retinopathy grade recognition. However, spurred by the advantages of Transformers, we propose a Transformer‐based method that is appropriate for recognizing the grade of diabetic retinopathy. Purpose: The purposes of this work are to demonstrate that (i) the pure attention mechanism is suitable for diabetic retinopathy grade recognition and (ii) Transformers can replace traditional CNNs for diabetic retinopathy grade recognition. Methods: This paper proposes a Vision Transformer‐based method to recognize the grade of diabetic retinopathy. Fundus images are subdivided into non‐overlapping patches, which are then converted into sequences by flattening, and undergo a linear and positional embedding process to preserve positional information. Then, the generated sequence is input into several multi‐head attention layers to generate the final representation. The first token sequence is input to a softmax classification layer to produce the recognition output in the classification stage. Results: The dataset for training and testing employs fundus images of different resolutions, subdivided into patches. We challenge our method against current CNNs and extreme learning machines and achieve an appealing performance. Specifically, the suggested deep learning architecture attains an accuracy of 91.4%, specificity = 0.977 (95% confidence interval (CI) (0.951–1)), precision = 0.928 (95% CI (0.852–1)), sensitivity = 0.926 (95% CI (0.863–0.989)), quadratic weighted kappa score = 0.935, and area under curve (AUC) = 0.986. Conclusion: Our comparative experiments against current methods conclude that our model is competitive and highlight that an attention mechanism based on a Vision Transformer model is promising for the diabetic retinopathy grade recognition task. The traditional track correlation methods have problems such as limitation of the application scenarios, unstable performances and poor practicalities. To solve those problems, a new adaptive track correlation method for multiple scenarios was proposed in this paper using the theories and methods from machine learning. Through interpreting and translating the track correlation problem in the field of information fusion into the classification recognition problem in the field of machine learning, the new method was derived based on deep convolutional neural networks. The association performance and adaptation capabilities of the proposed method had been validated by simulation experiments. The results show that the proposed method is better than the traditional methods with respect to association performance and adaptation capabilities, and can solve the track association problems for multiple scenarios, for example sensors have systematic errors and targets are dense or in formation.
