The current non‐circular and non‐regenerative approaches to farm dairy waste management have spurred a search for alternatives. Anaerobic digestion of the waste to collect biogas and digestate products is an option with significant potential for reducing the farm's environmental footprint and generating additional revenue. Although much research exists on the anaerobic digestion of dairy manure, there is a lack of detailed understanding of the challenges faced with farm dairy effluent (FDE). In addition, most existing studies lack key data, such as the on‐farm process cost. Therefore, the main aim of this review is to highlight these challenges and offer new insights into possible state‐of‐the‐art solutions The conventional methods of FDE disposal are critically compared to anaerobic digestion for economic, environmental, and technical feasibility. The paper also extends into a case study where a preliminary techno‐economic assessment showed that in New Zealand, $2.3 million would be required to set up a farm anaerobic digestion plant with a 900‐cow capacity. Although the Clean Water Act's regulation of point source pollution has had a significant effect on water quality, nonpoint sources of pollution, especially animal agriculture, remain a leading unevenly regulated source of water pollution in the United States. This work studies the effectiveness of local manure management regulations on dairy farms in Wisconsin. Wisconsin represents a unique policy experiment in the delegation of nonpoint agricultural pollution policy in a state with economically important small, nonpoint, dairy farms. Using hand collected regulatory data from Wisconsin counties we estimate the effects of changes in local regulations on water quality outcomes. The results demonstrate that a few easily implemented and verifiable regulations such as nutrient management plans have significant short‐term effects on water quality, whereas other less observable and difficult to implement regulations have no discernible effects in the short term. The work points to a number of potential policy levers to improve the Management of nonpoint pollution, as well as the challenges of nonpoint source regulatory policies on slow‐moving hydrologic processes. Veterinary drugs used in dairy production are potential contaminants of surface or groundwater sources, being able to affect human and environmental health. It is known that chronic exposure to antibiotics in low concentrations present in water can generate microbial resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of veterinary drugs in 53 groundwater samples used for animal and human consumption, collected in dairy milking parlors, in an important milk‐producing area of central Argentina, and to assess the risk to human health when they are used as drinking water. In 75% of the total samples analyzed, at least one veterinary drug was detected. The most frequently found drugs in water samples were the antibiotics tetracycline in 58.5% and oxytetracycline in 56.6%, and an anti‐inflammatory, flunixin in 39.6%. In the water samples, the tetracycline and oxytetracycline concentrations were between 0.1 and 5.3 μg/L and flunixin concentrations were between 0.01 and 2.1 μg/L. The frequency of appearance and the concentration levels of the substances found in the water samples were evaluated according to the productivity, size, and production system (confined or pasture) of the dairy farms. Higher concentrations and proportions of water samples containing antibiotics were observed when the number of animals per dairy farm was >182 and when the productivity was high (>25 liters per animal per day). In the case of flunixin, the percentage of detection was similar in all evaluated categories. The risk assessment for children and adults, considering the intake of drinking water containing residues of these drugs, did not indicate a significant health risk. It would be advisable to evaluate other sources of drinking water, both surface and underground, in other regions of the country, to provide data to assess the impact of these substances and the other contaminants on environmental and human health. Vancomycin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) is a zoonotic life‐threatening pathogen. Vancomycin exhibits anti‐bacterial activity by inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis by binding to the D‐ala‐D‐ala terminus of the peptidoglycan. But in VRSA, D‐ala‐D‐ala is replaced by D‐ala‐D‐lactate due to the presence of vanA, vanB or vanD genes. This study was intended to identify the molecular prevalence of VRSA in 768 bovine milk samples, risk factor association, antibiogram profile and bioinformatics analysis of VRSA by targeting vanB gene. Out of a total of 248 S. aureus isolates from mastitic milk samples, the phenotypic and genotypic prevalence of VRSA was estimated to be 17.74% and 10.89%, respectively. Farm‐level risk factors including use of improper milking technique, lack of milker's care during milking, unhygienic conditions during milking and no dry cow therapy were found to be significantly associated (p < 0.05). Anti‐microbial susceptibility testing of VRSA isolates exhibited the highest resistance to oxytetracycline, followed by oxacillin and Trimethoprim+sulfamethoxazole. The current study sequences showed more resemblance with reported sequences from Iraq (MN747834) and Egypt (MK095504, MK087830), which belong to vanB gene from S. aureus as compared to sequences from other countries, which belong to vanB gene from the genus Enterococcus. The Genetic Algorithm for Recombination Detection (GARD) found 234 potential breakpoints, translating into a search room of 123,883,305 models with up to 4 breakpoints. The phylogenetic motif profiling method discovered evolutionarily conserved residues across target genes' homologous protein sequences. These residues were discovered to be conserved in drug‐resistant target proteins over the evolutionary process and may play a key role in their function. The current study revealed a molecular prevalence of VRSA in dairy animals, along with molecular analysis of vancomycin resistance in S. aureus by targeting the vanB gene using standard bioinformatics tools. The occurrence of VRSA in animals requires serious attention because this pathogen has zoonotic potential, so it can become a greater risk to consumer health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Milk production among the smallholder dairy farmers in Zambia is reported to be low despite improvements in milk collection infrastructure and unmet demand by the populace. This study was conducted to characterize cattle breeds and the breeding strategies of the smallholder dairy production system in the Southern province of Zambia. The study was conducted using questionnaires to obtain responses from identified respondents in six districts considered the main dairy cattle producing areas. One hundred and twenty questionnaires were administered and available for descriptive statistical analysis. The cattle genetic groups included local (Tonga and Angoni) breeds and their crosses (40.0%); beef (Boran and Brahman) breeds and their crosses (23.3%); Friesian breed and its crosses (28.8%); Jersey breed and its crosses (4.9%); and Fleckvieh breed (3.0%). Calving rate was found to be to be between 36% and 50% for the dairy herds. Compared to the other genetic groups, it was noted that Friesian and its crosses had higher milk production (3.55 L vs. 1.4 L). The low milk yield reported could be attributed to the period of study, which coincided with the long dry season between April and October. The Friesian and its crosses recorded earlier age at first calving (2.65 vs. 2.8 years), shorter longevity (10.5 vs. 12.25 years), and shorter lactation length (7.5 vs. 9.25 months). Jersey and its crosses, on the other hand, had an above average performance for all indices of economic importance such as milk production, lactation length, age at first calving, longevity, and number of calves produced. The results indicated natural mating was practised by 85% of the farmers. Farmer‐preferred traits include size and conformation (23%); performance and colour (16% and 15%, respectively) in the choice of a bull. Selection by farmers were thus based on simple observation without pedigree or performance‐based genetic evaluation. It was apparent that the smallholder dairy production system is in a shifting trend to transform the mainly local and beef breed animals into dairy herds through crossing with exotic dairy breeds. The production system is, however, faced with the challenges of water and feed supply to meet nutritional requirements, and high disease burden. Jersey breed was found to be a logical choice for the resource poor smallholder dairy farmers. The development and management of the smallholder dairy breeding schemes should be all‐inclusive and directed at the prevalent production systems with the aim of also improving the feeding and management practices. Antimicrobial use (AMU) in the food chain is a potential driver of antimicrobial resistance. Despite Australia's strong regulation of AMU limited to veterinary prescriptions, a proportion of empirical antimicrobial treatments are administered by dairy farmers to manage common cattle health problems. This cross‐sectional survey identified key influences on AMU by dairy cattle farmers within New South Wales, Australia, to detect opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) engagement. The study identified existing relationships, resources and attitudes of the dairy farmers that could be optimised for on‐farm AMS strategies. Farmers were most highly influenced by veterinary advice and clinical signs of the animal followed by the withholding period and the potential for antimicrobial resistance development. Farmers' high confidence regarding their own knowledge of antimicrobials (>90%), their high regard for veterinary advice (>90%) and high rate of veterinary health care plan use (69%) provides a strong framework to build the profile and practice of AMS on dairy farms. Positive engagement by dairy farmers (survey response of 20%), was achieved by working with the NSW Food Authority. Despite respondents reporting low reliance on formal (government and commercial) organisations for information about AMU, their engagement demonstrates an opportunity for groups with unparalleled access to dairy farmers to drive AMS. An association between frequent use of veterinary advice and respondents keeping ceftiofur on‐farm requires further investigation. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of on‐farm resources, decision‐making, and practices is required to understand how practices relate to veterinary advice and accepted standards of appropriate AMU on dairy farms. Background: To what extent veterinarians active in the dairy or beef sector follow the antimicrobial therapy guidelines made available in different European countries for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) outbreaks, and whether differences in therapeutic or preventive preferences for BRD management exist, is currently unknown. Therefore, the objectives of this cross‐sectional study were to compare vaccination coverage and primary antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory treatment on dairy, beef and mixed‐breed farms in northern Belgium, and determine their compliance with the recommendations made by the Belgian formulary. Methods: Information on antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory drug use and vaccination coverage from 190 BRD outbreaks in 180 herds, submitted by 101 veterinarians, was analysed. Multivariable linear probability models, adjusted for clustering at the veterinarian level, were used to determine differences between dairy and beef farms. Results: Antimicrobials and non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were used in 93.5% and 81.7% of the BRD outbreaks, respectively. First‐line antimicrobials were used as primary treatment in only 42.3%, 50.9% and 38.6% of dairy, beef and mixed‐breed farms, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between dairy and beef farms in terms of use of long‐acting macrolides (–17.2 percentage points [pp]; 95% confidence interval [CI]: –31.9, –2.5), steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (15.2 pp; CI: 0.5, 29.8) and vaccination coverage (bovine respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus type 3 [33.1 pp; Cl: 15.7–50.6] and Mannheimia haemolytica [23.1 pp; Cl: 3.4–39.8]). Limitations: The herds that participated in this study were likely among the more motivated regarding BRD control. As such, the information on vaccination coverage is likely not entirely representative of herds in the study area. Interpretation is further complicated by the fact that vaccinated herds were potentially less likely to face a BRD outbreak and therefore participate in the current study. Conclusion: This study reveals differences in the primary use of (N)SAIDs, type of antimicrobials used and vaccination coverage on beef and dairy farms in the study region, and also differences in the appropriateness of antimicrobial selection based on the Belgian formulary.
