The out‐of‐sight groundwater and visible but much less extensive surface waters on land constitute a linked terrestrial water system around the planet. Research is crucial for our understanding of these terrestrial water system links and interactions with other geosystems and key challenges of Earth System change. This study uses a scoping review approach to discuss and identify topical, methodological and geographical gaps and priorities for research on these links and interactions of the coupled ground‐ and surface water (GSW) system at scales of whole‐catchments or greater. Results show that the large‐scale GSW system is considered in just a small part (0.4%–0.8%) of all studies (order of 105 for each topic) of either groundwater or surface water flow, storage, or quality at any scale. While relatively many of the large‐scale GSW studies consider links with the atmosphere or climate (8%–43%), considerably fewer address links with: (a) the cryosphere or coastal ocean as additional interacting geosystems (5%–9%); (b) change drivers/pressures of land‐use, water use, or the energy or food nexus (2%–12%); (c) change impacts related to health, biodiversity or ecosystem services (1%–4%). Methodologically, use of remote sensing data and participatory methods is small, while South America and Africa emerge as the least studied geographic regions. The paper discusses why these topical, methodological and geographical findings indicate important research gaps and priorities for the large‐scale coupled terrestrial GSW system and its roles in the future of the Earth System. Relevant research is crucial for reducing the unknowns and answering the questions, and this study's scoping review aims to assess how they have been addressed in published research so far. The aim is to identify key research gaps and priorities for further research on how the integrated water system on land functions and evolves on large scales, from whole hydrological catchments and in multiple catchments around the world up to global scale. The scoping review results show key research gaps and priorities to be the coupling of surface water and groundwater on land, and the interactions of this coupled water system with other parts and major challenges of the Earth System. Geographically, the gaps and priorities emerge as particularly large and urgent for South America and Africa. In this paper I analyse how the gradual reduction of research funds in Colombia can interrupt a key process in the generation of solutions to global urban problems. I draw on a bibliometric analysis to show that research funding flowing from North to South has created collaborations between researchers from North and South that have led to a better and more comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing cities around the world. Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set, which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers, is a compilation of ant records from collections (18,713 records), unpublished data (29,651 records), and published sources (106,910 records; 1,059 references), including papers, theses, dissertations, and book chapters published from 1886 to 2020. In total, the data set contains 153,818 ant records from 7,636 study locations in the Atlantic Forest, representing 10 subfamilies, 99 genera, 1,114 ant species identified with updated taxonomic certainty, and 2,235 morphospecies codes. Our data set reflects the heterogeneity in ant records, which include ants sampled at the beginning of the taxonomic history of myrmecology (the 19th and 20th centuries) and more recent ant surveys designed to address specific questions in ecology and biology. The data set can be used by researchers to develop strategies to deal with different macroecological and region‐wide questions, focusing on assemblages, species occurrences, and distribution patterns. Furthermore, the data can be used to assess the consequences of changes in land use in the Atlantic Forest on different ecological processes. In a jungle environment where jaguars are considered human, systems thinking has evolved in unexpected ways. Although systems thinking is commonly seen as a product of the Western world, other cultures have developed their own versions with unique characteristics. In this article, we explore Amazonian systems thinking, which has similarities to modern Western systems thinking, as well as differences that may inspire the evolution of systems approaches worldwide. We will discuss the contributions of Amazonian systems thinking particularly to find answers to the planet's ecological and sustainability problems, such as climate change and mass extinction of species, among others. We will present the systems thinking that emerged in some Amazonian communities, how it relates to mainstream Western systems thinking, and focus on some unique aspects of Amazonian systems thinking. Ballooning is a mechanism of aerial dispersal present in some groups of spiders. By releasing silken threads that are blown by the wind, spiders can travel long distances through the air. Aglaoctenus lagotis is a wolf spider that lives its entire life associated with a funnel‐web, despite the wandering habit that characterizes species in this family. We can find two forms of the species in Uruguay, one of them a strict inhabitant of grasslands of Uruguay. The high habitat specificity and the spiderlings observed surrounding the maternal web suggest a low aerial dispersal capacity in this species. In this study, we tested whether A. lagotis spiderlings are capable of dispersing by ballooning. We conducted laboratory and field experiments during the day and night, to record the occurrence of ballooning and typical behaviours that precede ballooning. We recorded ballooning both in the laboratory and in the field, and it was more frequent during the day. Although it has been reported repeatedly in species from this family, we never observed the pre‐ballooning tip‐toeing behaviour in A. lagotis. Ballooning was preceded by dropping on dragline, considered a behaviour that could generate aerial dispersion of lesser distance than that generated by the tip‐toeing. In Tierra del Fuego, the Magallanes‐Fagnano Fault System (MFFS) accommodates a significant portion of the relative motion between the South America and Scotia plates. However, it remains unclear whether some of the deformation is partitioned southwards, along the Beagle Channel Fault System (BCFS). In this paper, high‐resolution seismic reflection profiles were used to identify fault‐related ruptures in the submerged Quaternary sediments of the Beagle Channel. Some faults reach the seafloor, affecting marine sediments, indicating they are Holocene in age. The correlation with outcrop data and lineaments mapped onshore suggests the post‐glacial reactivation of two structures: the E‐W striking BCFS and the NW‐SE‐trending Lapataia Fault Zone (LFZ). Whereas the BCFS displays along‐strike variation in throw, the LFZ shows significant normal displacements. These results imply that deformation occurs in a wider and more complex manner than previously thought and highlight the need for a thorough hazard assessment of the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To estimate in‐hospital and 30‐day outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in South America through a systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational data. Methods: We comprehensively searched for papers published in peer‐reviewed medical journals and for abstracts presented in medical conferences of the region from 1 September 2008, through 29 June 2020, using predefined criteria. We included single‐centre studies on TAVR populations with ≥10 patients from South America reporting any in‐hospital or 30‐day clinical outcome. Results: Fifty‐five cohorts from seven countries, pooling 3001 patients, were included in a random‐effects meta‐analysis. Self‐expandable prostheses were the most frequently implanted. Pooled estimate of procedure success by VARC2 criteria was 90.0% (95%CI 81.8%‐94.7%; I2 75.0%). The pooled estimate rates of the outcomes were as follow: post‐procedure moderate or severe aortic regurgitation, 9.7% (95%CI 6.0%‐15.4%; I2 65.4%), in‐hospital cardiac tamponade, 4.0% (95%CI 2.5%‐6.6%; I2 0%), in‐hospital stroke, 4.1% (95%CI 2.9%‐5.7%; I2 0%), in‐hospital major vascular complication, 7.8% (95%CI 5.2%‐11.5%; I2 22.3%), in‐hospital permanent pacemaker implantation, 19.4% (95%CI 15.9%‐23.4%; I2 53.8%), in‐hospital mortality, 8.0% (95%CI 6.7%‐9.6%; I2 0%), and 30‐day mortality, 9.7% (95%CI 7.9%‐11.8%; I2 26.4%). Conclusion: As compared with published international registries, the overall results of TAVR in South America seemed underrated. Significant heterogeneity was observed in procedural success, pacemaker requirement, and post‐procedure moderate or severe aortic regurgitation. As a global industry, sport makes potentially significant contributions to climate change through both carbon emissions and influence over sustainability practices. Yet, evidence regarding impacts is uneven and spread across many disciplines. This paper investigates the impacts of sport emissions on climate and identifies knowledge gaps. We undertook a systematic and iterative meta‐analysis of relevant literature (1992–2022) on organized and individual sports. Using a defined search protocol, 116 sources were identified that map to four sport‐related themes: (1) carbon emissions and their measurement; (2) emissions control and decarbonization; (3) carbon sinks and offsets; and (4) behavior change. We find that mega sport events, elite sport, soccer, skiing, and golf have received most attention, whereas grass‐roots and women's sport, activity in Africa and South America, cricket, tennis, and volleyball are understudied. Other knowledge gaps include carbon accounting tools and indicators for smaller sports clubs and active participants; cobenefits and tradeoffs between mitigation‐adaptation efforts in sport, such as around logistics, venues, sports equipment, and facilities; geopolitical influence; and scope for climate change litigation against hosts and/or sponsors of carbon‐intensive events. The rise in the Earth's global average surface temperature and the increase of extreme weather events have been the focus of scientific discussion in the last decades. Extreme heat combined with other environmental extremes, like high concentrations of air pollution, may induce health problems—especially in socioeconomically vulnerable populations. Spring in South America requires particular attention due to its association with hot, dry weather and air pollution in most parts of the continent. This paper intends to better comprehend the behaviour of heatwaves during the austral winter–spring transition. We propose identifying the spatial coverage, frequency and intensity of heatwaves in homogeneous areas of maximum air temperature near the surface (Tmax). We employed cluster analyses during the period between July and October for 41 years (1979–2019) through the ERA5 reanalysis. Homogeneous Tmax areas in South America were defined by cluster analyses that indicated three homogeneous Tmax regions, as follows: a larger area of the continent including the tropical region (Area 1), eastern and southeastern South America (Area 2) and southernmost and steep areas in the Andes (Area 3). The heatwave events identified via ERA5 reanalysis were classified according to their intensity (intense, moderate and weak events). Spatial frequency and trend analyses were also performed regarding the intensity and persistence of heatwave episodes. These methods allowed the identification of the behavioural aspect of heatwaves spanning the last four decades. The Mann–Kendall statistical test (MK) was applied in order to analyse the heatwave trend with a statistical significance level of 5%. A total of 191 heatwave episodes were identified. Of this total, 47.12, 35.60 and 17.28% of episodes occurred in Areas 2, 3 and 1, respectively. The hotter area extending from northeast to southwest in central South America stood out by its largest frequencies of intense heatwave episodes. Across the continent there was a significant increase in the intensity and persistence of heatwaves over the period of 1979 through to 2019. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although being one of the most efficient tools to constrain the stratigraphy of sedimentary basins, detrital zircon geochronology may present limitations under certain conditions, and isotopic ages should be treated with caution before assigning a depositional age. This is the case of depositional environments that lack coeval volcanism, where there may exist a significant time gap between the age of the youngest detrital zircon available and the actual time of deposition of a sedimentary rock. In this paper, we put on a comprehensive analysis in which detrital geochronology is aided with other reliable geological constraints. As a case study, we evaluate the stratigraphic age and provenance of the Lapataia Formation from the Fuegian Andes of southernmost South America, a low‐grade metamorphic unit with a problematic stratigraphic definition in the context of the Rocas Verdes basin. Detrital ages show very wide age spectra, with a younger peak at ca. 267 Ma. However, based on detailed petrography and microstructural observations, as well as stratigraphic correlations at a regional scale, we conclude that the Lapataia Formation represents the earliest stages of Jurassic rifting during the opening of the Rocas Verdes basin. Erosion from older basement blocks in an environment lacking coeval volcanic activity explains the occurrence of Paleozoic and older grains, and the lack of younger zircons. Rupture size is a fundamental earthquake source parameter that is challenging to infer independently from far‐field seismological observations. Here, we develop a novel observational constraint on source size based on the decay rate of wavefield coherence across a seismic array. For a given earthquake, waveform coherence decays with increasing interstation distance or, more precisely, with increasing projection difference defined as the difference between the takeoff vectors associated to the two stations projected along the rupture direction. We find that coherence generally falls off with projection difference faster for earthquakes of larger magnitudes. The magnitude dependence of the coherence decay rate can be explained by a finite source effect: larger source sizes cause larger differences of phase delays between waves arriving from different parts of the rupture at different stations, hence a stronger spatial variability of the wavefield, resulting in a breakdown of waveform coherence. Assuming a 1‐D Haskell's source model, the rupture size can be estimated from the coherence decay rate. We apply this method to USArray data of earthquakes in three subduction zones, the Sea of Okhotsk, South America and Japan. The source sizes inferred from the coherence decay patterns are consistent with scaling relations intermediate between width‐saturated L‐models and quasi equi‐dimensional rupture models. Our observation captures a unique pattern of array waveform coherence and demonstrates the potential of utilizing waveform coherence to study earthquake source parameters. In most Latin American countries, there are significant numbers of missing people and forced disappearances, over 120,000 in Colombia alone. Successful detection of shallow buried human remains by forensic search teams is difficult in varying terrain and climates. Previous research has created controlled simulated clandestine graves of murder victims to optimize search techniques and methodologies. This paper reports on a study on controlled test site results over four simulated dismembered victims' clandestine graves as this is sadly a common scenario encountered in Latin America. Multispectral images were collected once post‐burial, electrical resistivity surveys were collected 4 times, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were collected three times up to the end of the 371 day survey monitoring period. After data processing, results showed that the multispectral data set could detect the simulated clandestine and control graves, with electrical resistivity imaging relative high resistances over some of the simulated graves but not over the empty control graves. GPR results showed good imaging on the Day 8 surveys, medium imaging on the Day 294 surveys, and medium to good imaging on the Day 371 surveys. Study implications suggest that, while clandestine graves of dismembered homicide victims would likely result in smaller‐sized graves when compared to graves containing intact bodies, these graves can still potentially be detected using remote sensing and geophysical methods. Southeastern South America is subject to considerable precipitation variability on seasonal to decadal timescales and has undergone very heavy land‐cover changes (LCCs) since the middle of the past century. The influence of local LCC and precipitation as drivers of regional evapotranspiration (ET) long‐term trends and variability remains largely unknown in the region. Here, ensembles of stand‐alone dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) with different atmospheric forcings are used to disentangle the influence of those two drivers on austral summer ET from 1950 to 2010. This paper examines the influence of both the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the dipole‐like first‐mode of southeastern South American precipitation variability (EOF1) on regional ET. We found that in the lower La Plata Basin, ET was driven by precipitation variability and showed a positive summer trend. Moreover, the region showed marked seasonal anomalies during El Niño and La Niña summers but mainly during EOF1 phases. On the contrary, in the upper La Plata Basin, LCCs forced the negative summer ET trend and particularly reduced the summer anomalies of the late 1990s, a period of ENSO and EOF1‐positive phases. In the South Atlantic Convergence Zone region, the high ET uncertainty across ensemble members impeded finding robust results, which highlights the importance of using multiple DGVMs and atmospheric forcings instead of relying on single model/forcing results. The past forty years have witnessed a rapid expansion of grain and oilseed production in the southern hemisphere, particularly in South America. The growth of southern hemisphere production is significant, not only because it has increased supplies to meet growing world food needs but also because it has effectively shortened the global crop growing cycle from twelve months to six months. In this paper, we develop and analyze a semi‐annual stochastic spatial–temporal equilibrium model of a generic agricultural market with two major exporting regions, North and South, which plant and harvest at different times of the year. As a case study, we calibrate our model parameters to reflect the stylized facts of the global soybean market between 1980 and 2019, with the United States serving as North and Brazil and Argentina serving as South. We find that more balanced production, with both hemispheres producing nearly equal amounts at different times of the year, has, from a global perspective, shortened the traditional crop "season" from twelve months to six months, allowing semi‐annual adjustments to planned production that stabilize supply and prices in all regions while reducing global inventories. Objective: In this paper, we seek to update and expand the understanding of whether the patterns of competition in two‐round elections in the United States exist in other countries. Methods: Using insights from the well‐developed literature on two‐round elections in the U.S. South, we analyze an original data set covering two‐round presidential systems in Latin America. We focus on the likelihood that elections will go to a second round, and, once a second round happens, the role that first‐round electoral strength and incumbency status play in determining the ultimate outcome. Results: Unlike previous work, our statistical model accounts for unobservable factors that simultaneously affect the likelihood of a second round occurring and of the first‐round leader winning that round. Conclusions: Patterns of competition across U.S. and Latin American two‐round elections are similar, though incumbency status may be a bigger asset in the latter than in the former. Toads are considered poisonous animals since they have a passive mode of defence relying on cutaneous poison glands, differently from venomous animals who can inject venom in predators/aggressors or prey. Toads of Rhinella marina group are generally large and have a broad distribution in South America, inhabiting a wide range of environments. In this paper, we studied the toads Rhinella icterica from the Atlantic rainforest, and Rhinella jimi from the Brazilian Semiarid Caatinga, analysing aspects of natural history and comparing their skin morphology, the presence of macroglands, their resistance to water loss and rates of water uptake. In periods of extreme drought, R. jimi uses rock cracks as refuges, exposing only the head and regions of accumulation of poison glands. The skin of R. jimi showed higher number of poison glands with hydrophilic content than R. icterica. R. jimi also had a thicker skin, which can be related to its superior resistance to water loss. It also showed high rates of rehydration in association with a peculiar behaviour using the limbs to spread water onto highly glandular skin areas, suggesting that poison glands may also act in water balance in addition to chemical defence. In this paper, I aim to convey the history of ecopsychology's changing conceptualizations of science and technology and their role in facilitating engagement with the ecology movement. To do so, I compare ecopsychology's treatment of science and technology in two important publications: Gatherings, a non‐peer‐reviewed digital journal of the early 2000s that portrayed ecopsychology in humanistic, socially critical, and artistic terms; and Ecopsychology, a scholarly journal founded in 2009 that regarded ecopsychological questions as testable hypotheses, and distinguished itself from prior ("first generation") ecopsychology on the basis of its embrace of technological progress and the scientific method. As a part of this shift, ecopsychologists of the "second generation" championed the notion that humans are a "Technological Species," an ontological statement that naturalized the increasing sophistication of high technology as the result of inherent human drives, and established conceptual groundwork for studies that used consumer technology such as computers to mediate experiences of nature. In the final part of the paper, I critique the "Technological Species" proposition for obscuring the historical and material conditions that make the existence of consumer technology possible, such as the ecologically devastating mining of rare‐earth metals on colonized land in Central and South America. I argue that, to be socially and ecologically accountable, ecopsychology should turn toward practices that help us make sense of consumer technology's place in systems of colonialist and ecological violence, process our place within these systems as users of consumer technology, and build community less dependent on technology. The devastating effects of this major crisis are felt in all possible spheres of the developing world and with a serious impact on social and economic development in developing countries. The spread of Covid‐19, which has brought the world to a near standstill, has given rise to the question on the socioeconomic effects of the pandemic. The special issue on Covid‐19 at JID aims to bring together contemporary research on several aspects of how the devastating effects of the pandemic have panned out in different spheres of life, particularly, in the developing world. This special issue has 10 papers with a particular emphasis on evidence of the impact of the Covid‐19 pandemic in Sub‐Saharan Africa and South America. This paper presents an analysis of Equatorial Plasma Bubble (EPB) events that occurred during pre- and post-sunrise hours in the South America sector on 18 March 2015, when the St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm was in the recovery phase. The data from a set of multi-diagnostic instruments, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers, L-band GNSS ionospheric scintillation monitors, ionosondes, and a Fabry-Perot interferometer, are analyzed. Strong L-band amplitude scintillation was observed with spread-F and total electron content (TEC) fluctuations at times when the electron density and tTEC were minimum with respect to their diurnal variations. The EPBs remained observed for about 3:30 hr after sunrise on the east coast of the South American continent. The daytime ionospheric irregularities show a longitudinal dependency between the west and east coasts, separated by about 3,600 km. Our analysis of the observations suggests that a Disturbance Dynamo Electric Field effect caused by storm-time wind perturbations might have triggered the Rayleigh-Taylor instability near local dawn on the east and west coasts of the South American continent. The effects of ambient ionosphere-thermosphere conditions on the evolution of irregularities are assessed to understand the longitudinal differences. Aim: The efficiency of animal‐mediated seed dispersal is threatened by the decline of animal populations, especially in tropical forests. We hypothesise that large‐seeded plants with animal‐mediated dispersal tend to have limited geographic ranges and face an increased risk of extinction due to the potential decline in seed dispersal by large‐bodied fruit‐eating and seed‐dispersing animals (frugivores). Methods: First, we collected dispersal‐related traits (dispersal syndrome, fruit size, and seed size), growth form (tree, climber, and other) and preferred vegetation type (open and closed) data for 1052 Atlantic Forest plant species. Next, we integrated these with occurrence records, extinction risk assessments, and phylogenetic trees. Finally, we performed phylogenetic generalised least squares regressions to test the direct and interactive effects of dispersal‐related traits and vegetation type on geographical range size. Results: Large‐seeded species had smaller range sizes than small‐seeded species, but only for species with animal‐mediated dispersal, not for those dispersed by abiotic mechanisms. However, plants with abiotic dispersal had overall smaller range sizes than plants with animal‐mediated dispersal. Furthermore, we found that species restricted to forests had smaller ranges than those occurring in open or mixed vegetation. Finally, at least 29% of the Atlantic Forest flora is threatened by extinction, but this was not related to plant dispersal syndromes. Main Conclusions: Large‐seeded plants with animal‐mediated dispersal may be suffering from dispersal limitation, potentially due to past and ongoing defaunation of large‐bodied frugivores, leading to small range sizes. Other factors, such as deforestation and fragmentation, will probably modulate the effects of dispersal on range size, and ultimately extinction. Pathogen spillover corresponds to the transmission of a pathogen or parasite from an original host species to a novel host species, preluding disease emergence. Understanding the interacting factors that lead to pathogen transmission in a zoonotic cycle could help identify novel hosts of pathogens and the patterns that lead to disease emergence. We hypothesize that ecological and biogeographic factors drive host encounters, infection susceptibility, and cross‐species spillover transmission. Using a rodent–ectoparasite system in the Neotropics, with shared ectoparasite associations as a proxy for ecological interaction between rodent species, we assessed relationships between rodents using geographic range, phylogenetic relatedness, and ectoparasite associations to determine the roles of generalist and specialist hosts in the transmission cycle of hantavirus. A total of 50 rodent species were ranked on their centrality in a network model based on ectoparasites sharing. Geographic proximity and phylogenetic relatedness were predictors for rodents to share ectoparasite species and were associated with shorter network path distance between rodents through shared ectoparasites. The rodent–ectoparasite network model successfully predicted independent data of seven known hantavirus hosts. The model predicted five novel rodent species as potential, unrecognized hantavirus hosts in South America. Findings suggest that ectoparasite data, geographic range, and phylogenetic relatedness of wildlife species could help predict novel hosts susceptible to infection and possible transmission of zoonotic pathogens. Hantavirus is a high‐consequence zoonotic pathogen with documented animal‐to‐animal, animal‐to‐human, and human‐to‐human transmission. Predictions of new rodent hosts can guide active epidemiological surveillance in specific areas and wildlife species to mitigate hantavirus spillover transmission risk from rodents to humans. This study supports the idea that ectoparasite relationships among rodents are a proxy of host species interactions and can inform transmission cycles of diverse pathogens circulating in wildlife disease systems, including wildlife viruses with epidemic potential, such as hantavirus. Summary: Quinoa is an agriculturally important crop species originally domesticated in the Andes of central South America. One of its most important phenotypic traits is seed colour. Seed colour variation is determined by contrasting abundance of betalains, a class of strong antioxidant and free radicals scavenging colour pigments only found in plants of the order Caryophyllales. However, the genetic basis for these pigments in seeds remains to be identified. Here we demonstrate the application of machine learning (extreme gradient boosting) to identify genetic variants predictive of seed colour. We show that extreme gradient boosting outperforms the classical genome‐wide association approach. We provide re‐sequencing and phenotypic data for 156 South American quinoa accessions and identify candidate genes potentially controlling betalain content in quinoa seeds. Genes identified include novel cytochrome P450 genes and known members of the betalain synthesis pathway, as well as genes annotated as being involved in seed development. Mountainous grasslands in South America, characterized by their high diversity, provide a wide range of contributions to people, including water regulation, soil erosion prevention, livestock feed provision, and preservation of cultural heritage. Prior research has highlighted the significant role of grazing in shaping the diversity and productivity of grassland ecosystems, especially in highly productive, eutrophic systems. In such environments, grazing has been demonstrated to restore grassland plant diversity by reducing primary productivity. However, it remains unclear whether these findings are applicable to South American mountainous grasslands, where plants are adapted to different environmental conditions. To address this uncertainty, we conducted a meta‐analysis of experiments excluding livestock grazing to assess its impact on plant diversity and productivity across mountainous grasslands in South America. In alignment with studies in temperate grasslands, our findings indicated that herbivore exclusion resulted in increased aboveground biomass but reduced species richness and Shannon diversity. The effects of grazing exclusion became more pronounced with longer durations of exclusion; nevertheless, they remained resilient to various climatic conditions, including mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature, as well as the evolutionary history of grazing. In contrast to results observed in temperate grasslands, the reduction in species richness due to herbivore exclusion was not associated with increased aboveground biomass. This suggests that the processes governing (sub)tropical grassland plant diversity may differ from those in temperate grasslands. Consequently, further research is necessary to better understand the specific factors influencing plant diversity and productivity in South American montane grasslands and to elucidate the ecological implications of herbivore exclusion in these unique ecosystems. The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) hypothesis has been validated for many taxon groups, but so far, stream diatoms have not conformed to this pattern. Research on diatoms that includes data from South America is lacking, and our study aims to address this knowledge gap. Previous studies have successfully explained stream diatom species richness by considering niche dimensionality of physicochemical variables. Moreover, in southwestern South America, the observed biogeographical pattern differs from LDG and has been shown to be determined by historical factors. We used a dataset comprising 373 records of stream diatom communities located between 35° S and 52° S latitude, southwestern South America. The dataset included physicochemical river water variables, climate data, and ice sheet cover from the Last Glacial Maximum. We explored geographical patterns of diatom species richness and evaluated 12 different causal mechanisms, including climate‐related theories, physicochemical and climatical exploratory analyses, historical factors, and niche dimensionality. A metacommunity analysis was conducted to evaluate the possible nested structure due to historical factors. We observed an increase in diatom species richness from south to north. Models containing both physicochemical and climatic predictors explained the highest proportion of variation in the data. Silica, which was correlated with latitude, and flow velocity, which did not show any spatial pattern, were the most important predictors. Historical factors and nested structure did not play any role. Contrary to what has been reported in the literature, we found no support for climate‐related explanations of species richness. Instead, theories related to niche dimensionality and local factors provided better explanations, consistent with previous related research. We suggest that the increase in diatom richness in the north of our study region is due to a higher nutrient supply in these rivers, rather than a due to larger species pool in the area. Northeastern Brazil has thousands of wetland fossiliferous deposits with megafauna and, in some cases, associated lithic artifacts. The timing of the arrival of humans in South America and the extinction of megafauna is still debated and these sites contribute both to this discussion and to the reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene paleoenvironment. Lagoa do Quari, 40 km south of São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí state, is a marsh deposit in the present semiarid caatinga environment, excavated by an interdisciplinary team in 2002–2003. This paper presents the archaeological, palaeontological, geological, chronological, stratigraphical and palynological results and their implications for the Quaternary of northeastern Brazil. The site has a rich megafaunal bonebed at the bottom, dominated by Eremotherium giant sloth remains with poor biodiversity, and a sandy‐silty deposit at the top; two 14C dates constrain this latter layer to 9,944–9,557 and 6,308–6,177 cal. years BP and the associated rich lithic industry of quartz and chert shows a technical continuity throughout the Holocene in the region. Palynology describes an open landscape with periodic wet phases, which could explain the richness of the archaeological occurrences in Holocenic Brazilian prehistory. The Lebinthini crickets are distributed in Southeast Asia, Western Pacific and tropical South America. They represent more than half of the described species in the subfamily Eneopterinae. These crickets are morphologically and behaviorally diverse, varying in body size, wing morphology (ranging from brachypterous to fully winged) and acoustic signals. They also have a distinctive communication system: high‐frequency calling, vibratory signalling, duetting, and lack of phonotaxis in females. To investigate how these traits evolved and diversified, a clear phylogenetic context is needed with taxonomic and biological data for as many species as possible. Since 2010, the numbers of known species and genera in the tribe have grown considerably, but the type genus Lebinthus and the tribe classification lacked a general revision based on phylogenetic inferences. In this paper, we study the systematics of the Lebinthini and present new phylogenetic results confirming the monophyly of Lebinthini and the relationships established by previous studies. The phylogeny allows us to define three monophyletic subtribes within the Lebinthini with clear morphological features and distribution areas: Cardiodactylina subtribe n., Lebinthina subtribe n., and Ligypterina subtribe n. We also redefine Lebinthus and described two new genera related to Lebinthus, Falcerminthusgen.nov., and Fadinthusgen.nov., each characterized by clear‐cut morphological, anatomical, and acoustic features. Using ancestral state reconstructions, we investigate the evolution of the diverse calling songs in Lebinthini. We demonstrate that both trills and monosyllabic calls were acquired multiple times instead of evolving from simple to complex temporal patterns as suggested from previous studies. We also find that temporal traits and the dominant frequency evolve in a very dynamic way, and that the harmonic of the call, i.e., the dominant frequency, seems to undergo diversification in the subtribe Lebinthina. Amphibians and reptiles are ectothermic animals and therefore depend on environmental temperatures to maintain their physiological functions. Despite being poorly documented, data on thermal behavioral thresholds to avoid overheating in their habitats are essential to improve the understanding of their thermal ecology and physiology. Here we provide a data set of 312 individual voluntary thermal maximum (VTMax) values, the maximum temperature tolerated by individuals before actively moving to a colder place, for 53 species of amphibians and reptiles of the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado savannas of southeastern South America. Voluntary thermal maximum values were recorded as the body temperature at which the individuals exited a heating box experimental setup. This data set comprises 25 species of 15 genera and eight families of amphibians and 28 species of 24 genera and 12 families of reptiles. Of the total number of individual records, 67.9% derived from the Cerrado and 32.0% derived from the Atlantic Forest ecoregions. Overall, lizards had higher VTMax than amphibians and snakes, and individuals in the Atlantic Forest had overall higher VTMax values than the ones in Cerrado. This data set is the first to compile VTMax values for South American herpetofauna, along with detailed experimental information such as heating rates and time to reach VTMax. This data set provides a baseline for understanding thermal tolerances and requirements of Neotropical ectothermic vertebrate species, which might be useful for future research on the impact of climate change and to test novel ecological hypotheses. Mineral dust accumulated on the ocean floor is an important archive for reconstructing past atmospheric circulation changes and climatological conditions in the source areas. Dust emitted from Southern Hemisphere dust sources is widely deposited over the oceans. However, there are few records of dust deposition over the open ocean, and a large need for extended geographical coverage exists. We present a large data set (134 surface sediment samples) of Late Holocene dust deposition from seafloor surface sediments covering the entire South Atlantic Ocean. Polymodal grain‐size distributions of the lithogenic fraction indicate that the sediments are composed of multiple sediment components. By using end‐member modeling, we attempt to disentangle the dust signal from non‐aeolian sediments. Combined with 230Th‐normalized lithogenic fluxes, we quantified the specific deposition fluxes for mineral dust, crrent‐sorted sediments and ice‐rafted debris (IRD). Although the method could not completely separate the different components in every region, it shows that dust deposition off the most prominent dust source for the South Atlantic Ocean—southern South America—amounts up to approximately 0.7 g cm−2 Kyr−1 and decreases downwind. Bottom‐current‐sorted sediments and IRD are mostly concentrated around the continental margins. The ratio of the coarse to fine dust end members reveals input from north African dust sources to the South Atlantic. The majority of the observations are in good agreement with new model simulations. This extensive and relevant data set of dust grain size and deposition fluxes to the South Atlantic could be used to calibrate and validate further model simulations. However, in the remote open ocean, dust samples are difficult to obtain and therefore records are sparse. We present a large data set of dust deposition, determined from the top centimeter of ocean floor sediments, covering the entire South Atlantic Ocean. These appeared to be complex mixtures of different sediment types, which we attempted to unmix mathematically. This resulted in four individual components, which are fine and coarse mineral dust, current‐sorted sediments and ice‐rafted debris (IRD). Numerical experiments on sensitivity to land surface initializations are frequently conducted to investigate the predictability and uncertainties of hydrometeorological extremes. However, the conventional approaches to soil initialization often assume synchronized extremes over the target region, creating initial conditions that violate the intrinsic spatial pattern of hydrometeorological variability. Here we propose a "Slope" approach to accommodate unsynchronized anomalies, which creates initial conditions of a variable (soil temperature or soil moisture) across a large domain based on the slopes of linear regression between the variable averaged over a small target region and at each grid point in the surrounding regions. Within the target region, the "Slope" approach produces spatial patterns and temporal evolutions of hydrometeorological responses similar to the conventional approach, but generates stronger signals probably due to the nonlocal impact (excluded from the conventional approach). In the surrounding regions, the hydrometeorological responses in the "Slope" approach are consistent with the spatiotemporal variability of the model climate. Slope‐based experiments targeting different adjacent regions produce similar results, suggesting that one ensemble of experiments targeting one region may be sufficient to represent the responses from multiple ensembles each targeting a different region and thus providing the basis for increasing the computational efficiency of some land‐atmosphere interaction studies. While South America is used to demonstrate the concept in this study, the new approach offers the most advantages in regions with spatially unsynchronized or even anti‐phased hydrometeorological extremes. Plain Language Summary: Sensitivity experiments on soil initializations were routinely conducted to study land‐atmosphere interactions in the past two decades. These studies, either imposing soil moisture or temperature anomalies to a small target region and keeping it "normal" elsewhere or imposing similar anomalies across a large domain, cannot account for spatially unsynchronized variations. To address this deficiency, we propose a "Slope" approach to derive the initial conditions based on the slopes of regression between soil temperature or moisture in the target region and its surroundings. South America, particularly within its tropical belt, is renowned for its unparalleled high levels of species richness, surpassing other major biomes. Certain neotropical areas harbor fragmented knowledge of insect diversity and face imminent threats from biodiversity loss and climate change. Hence, there is an urgent need for rapid estimation methods to complement slower traditional taxonomic approaches. A variety of algorithms for delimiting species through single‐locus DNA barcodes have been developed and applied for rapid species diversity estimates across diverse taxa. However, tree‐based and distance‐based methods may yield different group assignments, leading to potential overestimation or underestimation of putative species. Here, we investigate the performance of different DNA‐based species delimitation approaches to rapidly estimate the diversity of Polypedilum (Chironomidae, Diptera) in South America. Additionally, we test the hypothesis that significant differences exist in the community structure of Polypedilum fauna between South America and its neighboring regions, particularly the Nearctic. Our analysis encompasses a dataset of 1492 specimens from 598 locations worldwide, with a specific focus on South America. Within this region, we analyzed a subset of 247 specimens reported from 37 locations. Using various methods including the Barcode Index Number (BIN), Bayesian Poisson tree processes (bPTP), multi‐rate Poisson tree processes (mPTP), single‐rate Poisson tree processes (sPTP), and generalized mixed Yule coalescent (sGMYC), we identify molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) ranging from 267 to 520. Our results indicate that the sGMYC method is the most suitable for estimating putative species in our dataset, resulting in the identification of 75 species in the Neotropical region, particularly in South America. Notably, this region exhibited higher species richness in comparison to the Palearctic and Oriental realms. Additionally, our findings suggest potential differences in species composition of Polypedilum fauna between the Neotropical and the adjacent Nearctic realms, highlighting high levels of endemism and species richness in the first. These results support our hypothesis that there are substantial differences exist in species composition between the Polypedilum fauna in South America and the neighboring regions. Seamounts and ridges are often invoked to explain subduction‐related phenomena such as flat slab generation, but the extent of their involvement remains controversial. An analysis of seismicity in the region of the Pampean flat slab through an application of an automated catalog generation algorithm resulted in 35,924 well constrained local earthquake hypocenters and a total of 12,172 focal mechanisms. Several new features related to the subduction of the Juan Fernandez Ridge (JFR) were discovered, including (a) a series of parallel lineaments of seismicity in the subducted Nazca plate separated by about 50 km and trending about 20°, and (b) a strong spatial correlation between these deeper (>80 km depth) regions of intense seismicity and concentrations of activity in the crust almost directly above it. Focal mechanisms of the deeper events are almost exclusively (∼81%) normal, while those in the crust are predominantly (∼70%) reverse. The deeper lineaments mirror the orientation and spacing of several seamount chains seen on the Nazca plate, suggesting that these patterns are caused by the same types of features at depth. This would imply that relatively minor features persist as slab anomalies long after they are subducted. The correlation of the deeper seismicity that defines these features with seismicity in the mid to lower crust suggests a genetic relation between the two. We postulate that volatiles from the subducted ridges percolate into the South American crust and induce seismicity essentially by fracking it. Some of these effects can be illuminated by determining the locations and mechanisms of earthquakes associated with them. Seismic data collected near one of these features, the Juan Fernandez Ridge beneath South America, were analyzed with an automated catalog generation routine to significantly increase the number of well‐constrained earthquake locations from this area. Plots of these new locations reveal patterns in and around the subducted ridge that mirror the distribution of minor ridges on the Nazca plate, suggesting that the consumption of similar ridges is responsible for this activity. Moreover, these patterns are reflected in the patterns of earthquakes in the South American crust directly above them, also suggesting a genetic relationship. We hypothesize that volatiles such as water or carbon dioxide are being released by these subducted ridges, migrating through the South American mantle, and essentially fracking the mid to lower crust by increasing pore pressure. The subduction of an active spreading center generates a clear signature in the temporal evolution of subduction zones. It disrupts the typical arc‐type magmatism and intraplate seismicity, enhances the emplacement of backarc plateau lava and profoundly change the tectonics and topographic relief. These distinct observations are commonly linked to a slab window opening and mantle upwelling. The Chile Triple Junction provides the ideal setup to study the mid‐ocean ridge subduction process where both sides of the spreading center continue to subduct. Here, we use 2‐D numerical petrological‐thermomechanical modeling to focus on transient geodynamic processes caused by mid‐ocean ridge subduction. Model results show slab separation along the ridge axis with the opening of a slab window. During the opening, partial melts from the spreading center migrate toward the subcontinental mantle and high temperatures in the forearc are predicted. The temporal evolution of the modeled temperature is consistent with observed heat flow data, and with magmatism and high‐temperature metamorphism recorded in Chilean forearc rocks. Such migrated partial melts might explain the low viscosity inferred and low seismic velocity anomalies imaged in the slab window beneath South America, and the common geochemical signature of the Chile Ridge, the Taitao Ophiolite and the backarc magmatism. Following slab separation, our models suggest forearc uplift and changes in the stress regime, processes which are consistent with deformation records. Summarizing, our model of the geodynamic evolution of the Chile Ridge subduction provides a consistent framework that explains diverse records of magmatism, metamorphism, deformation and mantle physical properties. This study examined the spatial and temporal patterns of the canopy layer urban heat islands (UHIUCL) in a small city in southeastern Brazil using the local climate zone (LCZ) system. We analysed the influence of weather conditions, LCZs characteristics, and local surface relief on the UHIUCL magnitudes. Mobile traverses were used to measure air temperatures during representative nights of wet and dry seasons. Daily maximum magnitudes were observed in compact classes (LCZs 3 and 7) under ideal weather conditions (dry, clear skies, and calm) and higher anthropogenic heat release (weekdays). Seasonal effects on LCZ thermal differences were negligible. The peripheral landscapes were warmer than the city centre in both seasons. Among the warmer areas in the city, magnitudes in compact LCZs 3 and 7 were consistently higher than in LCZ 6. In general, representative sites of the main 'built' LCZs in the study area exhibit similar inter‐zone temperature patterns to those reported for cities of different sizes from tropical and midlatitude regions. Thermal contrasts of ΔTLCZ 3 − D in the study area reveal significant evidence that small cities can have as strong heat islands as bigger cities. These findings highlight the importance of the LCZ system to identify the main controlling factors driving such thermal differences and the need to extend the application of this approach in other South American cities to yield systematic data of UHIUCL for urban planning given the coming challenges of climate change over the region. Physalis peruviana (Solanaceae), originating from the Andean region of South America, is an exotic plant cultivated in Brazil that produces edible fruit. Five viruses have been reported to naturally infect the Physalis plants in Brazil, of which, two have been drawing attention for the severity of their infections: sobemovirus, physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) and orthotospovirus, groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of single and double infections of PhyRMV and GRSV on the development, yield and postharvest fruit characteristics of P. peruviana plants. We found that both viruses caused severe systemic symptoms in infected plants, and double infection even led to plant death. Plant height and aerial dry weight were significantly affected by PhyRMV and GRSV infections. Double‐infected plants were the most affected, exhibiting average height and aerial dry weight reductions of 70.9% and 89.7%, respectively. Moreover, PhyRMV‐ and GRSV‐infected plants showed average fruit yield reductions of 66.4% and 85.2%, respectively, compared to healthy plants. Notably, double‐infected plants did not produce any fruit. The fruits produced by infected plants were smaller than those produced by healthy plants. Viral infections also affected postharvest characteristics, such as titratable acidity, total soluble solids (°Brix), phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant activity. Both viruses affected the pulp firmness and palatability, but not the colour of the fruits. The impacts of hot, dry, and compound hot‐dry extremes are significant for societies, economies, and ecosystems worldwide. Such events therefore need to be assessed in the light of anthropogenic climate change so that suitable adaptation measures can be implemented by governments and stakeholders. Here we show a comprehensive analysis of hot, dry, and compound hot‐dry extremes over global land regions using 25 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models and four future emissions scenarios from 1950 to 2100. Hot, dry, and compound hot‐dry extremes are projected to increase over large parts of the globe by the end of the 21st century. Hot and compound hot‐dry extremes show the most widespread increases and dry extreme changes are sensitive to the index used. Many regional changes depend on the strength of greenhouse‐gas forcing, which highlights the potential to limit the changes with strong mitigation efforts. It is therefore of paramount importance that governments and stakeholders assess the risk from such events and adapt accordingly. Lightning activity has been predicted to increase with global warming, though estimates of lightning sensitivity to a change of temperature vary widely. Since lightning is a small‐scale process, it must be represented by parametrizations in climate models. This article uses large‐scale meteorological parameters tied to thunderstorm generation to improve existing empirical models that simulate regional thunderstorm behaviour. The response of the number of thunderstorms (as presented here) to climate change is rarely analysed in global studies. This study focuses on Tropical America, and uses the ERA5 higher‐resolution reanalysis data (ERA5) to develop our empirical model. Thunderstorm data were taken from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) and processed using the clustering algorithm developed by Mezuman et al. (2014). The two meteorological parameters that correlated best with thunderstorm clusters in Tropical America were specific humidity (SH) and convective available potential energy (CAPE). The resulting empirical model was run from 1979 to 2019 using ERA5 reanalysis data as input. This approach approximates the long‐term trends in the behaviour of thunderstorms in the regions, in the absence of a complete historical lightning record. To our surprise, Tropical American thunderstorms exhibited a negative trend over this period, with an 8% decrease in thunderstorm clusters since the 1980s even with a rise of 1 K in temperature over the same period. The regions of largest decreases in thunderstorm activity align well with estimates of deforestation. We estimate that for every 1 Tg C lost due to deforestation, there is a 10% decrease in thunderstorm number. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on observations of the Jicamarca Unattended Long‐term investigations of the Ionosphere and Atmosphere (JULIA) radar, we perform statistical analysis on the occurrence of 3‐m‐scale E‐region irregularities and F‐region irregularities (FRI) in Jicamarca region of South America. The results show that there is a negative correlation between the occurrence rates of equatorial irregularities in E‐ and F‐region. When the equatorial spread F appears, the occurrence rate of irregularities in E‐layer decreases. By analyzing the ion zonal drift velocity detected by JULIA radar, it is proposed that the vertically polarized electric field in the bottom F‐layer could extend downward to E‐layer when FRI appears, leading to the weakening or even reversal of E‐layer electric field. As a result, the electron vertical drift velocity in the E‐layer decreases so as to suppress the growth rate of two‐stream instability, which cause a weakening or even disappearance of equatorial irregularities in E‐region. Apristurus ovicorrugatus, a new species of deepwater catshark, is described from northwestern Australia. Unique egg cases belonging to an unknown species of Apristurus prompted a more detailed investigation of Apristurus specimens off northwestern Australia. One specimen previously identified as A. sinensis collected off Dampier Archipelago was found gravid with a single egg case. Removal of this egg case confirmed that this species was responsible for producing the unique egg cases previously recorded. The egg cases of this species have strong T‐shaped longitudinal ridges on the dorsal and ventral surfaces which are unique in the genus Apristurus. The ridges most closely resemble those present in Bythaelurus canescens from South America, but are larger and always T‐shaped. The holotype is closest morphologically to A. sinensis but differs in having a medium brown buccal cavity (vs. jet black), ridged egg cases (vs. smooth egg cases), fewer intestinal spiral valve turns and larger pectoral fins. The holotype is also similar, and closest on a molecular level, to A. nakayai with which it shares a unique synapomorphic character, the white shiny iris (apomorphic within the genus). A late‐term embryo removed from an egg case superficially resembled the holotype except in having two parallel rows of enlarged dermal denticles on the dorsolateral predorsal surface. Recent nomenclatural changes to the genera Apristurus and Pentanchus are discussed and challenged. The interaction of the northern Nazca and southwestern Caribbean oceanic plates with northwestern South America (NWSA) and the collision of the Panama‐Choco arc (PCA) have significant implications on the evolution of the northern Andes. Based on a quantitative kinematic reconstruction of the Caribbean and Farallon/Farallon‐derived plates, we reconstructed the subducting geometries beneath NWSA and the PCA accretion to the continent. The persistent northeastward migration of the Caribbean plate relative to NWSA in Cenozoic time caused the continuous northward advance of the Farallon‐Caribbean plate boundary, which in turn resulted in its progressive concave trench bending against NWSA. The increasing complexity during the Paleogene included the onset of Caribbean shallow subduction, the PCA approaching the continent, and the forced shallow Farallon subduction that ended in the fragmentation of the Farallon Plate into the Nazca and Cocos plates and the Coiba and Malpelo microplates by the late Oligocene. The convergence tectonics after late Oligocene comprised the accretional process of the PCA to NWSA, which evolved from subduction erosion of the forearc to collisional tectonics by the middle Miocene, as well as changes of convergence angle and slab dip of the Farallon‐derived plates, and the attachment of the Coiba and Malpelo microplates to the Nazca plate around 9 Ma, resulting in a change of convergence directions. During the Pliocene, the Nazca slab broke at 5.5°N, shaping the modern configuration. Overall, the proposed reconstruction is supported by geophysical data and is well correlated with the magmatic and deformation history of the northern Andes. Plain Language Summary: The tectonic reconstruction in convergent triple junctions is a particularly challenging task as the relative motion between plates could define highly changing boundaries. Indeed, the resulting interaction between these convergent plates may induce important changes in the disposition of the trenches, and in turn in the three‐dimensional geometry of the subducting plates. Therefore, these highly dynamic conditions throughout geological time may be accommodated by different phases of plate fragmentation and reorganization. These factors could explain the complex spatial‐temporal distribution of subduction‐related magmatism and the different episodes of deformation in the upper plates. This reasoning is validated in the northwestern corner of South America (SA), where the continent has been converging against the Caribbean and Farallon‐derived oceanic plates since Cretaceous time. Additionally, we study the effects of the collision and accretion of the Panama‐Choco arc with SA. To accomplish that, we review the kinematic history of the Farallon/Nazca and Caribbean oceanic plates relative to stable Guiana Craton (SA) and integrate these results with the magmatic and deformation evolution of the northern Andes, which allow us to propose a model of the geometrical evolution of the subducting slabs. The obtained model is additionally constrained by seismological data and published velocity anomalies. Planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes parameterize unresolved turbulent mixing within the PBL and free troposphere (FT). Previous studies reported that precipitation simulation over the Amazon in South America is quite sensitive to PBL schemes and the exact relationship between the turbulent mixing and precipitation processes is, however, not disentangled. In this study, regional climate simulations over the Amazon in January–February 2019 are examined at process level to understand the precipitation sensitivity to PBL scheme. The focus is on two PBL schemes, the Yonsei University (YSU) scheme, and the asymmetric convective model v2 (ACM2) scheme, which show the largest difference in the simulated precipitation. During daytime, while the FT clouds simulated by YSU dissipate, clouds simulated by ACM2 maintain because of enhanced moisture supply due to the enhanced vertical moisture relay transport process: (a) vertical mixing within PBL transports surface moisture to the PBL top, and (b) FT mixing feeds the moisture into the FT cloud deck. Due to the thick cloud deck over Amazon simulated by ACM2, surface radiative heating is reduced and consequently the convective available potential energy is reduced. As a result, precipitation is weaker from ACM2. Two key parameters dictating the vertical mixing are identified, p, an exponent determining boundary layer mixing and λ, a scale dictating FT mixing. Sensitivity simulations with altered p, λ, and other treatments within YSU and ACM2 confirm the precipitation sensitivity. The FT mixing in the presence of clouds appears most critical to explain the sensitivity between YSU and ACM2. The maintenance of a thick cloud deck over the Amazon in ACM2, is caused by enhanced vertical transport of moisture from the surface to above the boundary layer. Such an improved understanding of the turbulence/clouds/precipitation relationship allow us to propose potential solutions to improve PBL schemes in weather and climate models. Mountains are renowned for their bountiful biodiversity. Explanations on the origin of such abundant life are usually regarded to their orogenic history. However, ancient mountain systems with geological stability also exhibit astounding levels of number of species and endemism, as illustrated by the Brazilian Quartzitic Mountains (BQM) in Eastern South America. Thus, cycles of climatic changes over the last couple million years are usually assumed to play an important role in the origin of mountainous biota. These climatic oscillations potentially isolated and reconnected adjacent populations, a phenomenon known as flickering connectivity, accelerating speciation events due to range fragmentation, dispersion, secondary contact, and hybridization. To evaluate the role of the climatic fluctuations on the diversification of the BQM biota, we estimated the ancient demography of distinct endemic species of animals and plants using hierarchical approximate Bayesian computation analysis and Ecological Niche Modelling. Additionally, we evaluated if climatic oscillations have driven a genetic spatial congruence in the genetic structure of codistributed species from the Espinhaço Range, one of the main BQM areas. Our results show that the majority of plant lineages underwent a synchronous expansion over the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, c. 21 thousand years ago), although we could not obtain a clear demographic pattern for the animal lineages. We also obtained a signal of a congruent phylogeographic break between lineages endemic to the Espinhaço Range, suggesting how ancient climatic oscillations might have driven the evolutionary history of the Espinhaço's biota. This study examines the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) modulation of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections in its decaying stages with the tropical ocean by focusing on the Indian Ocean Basin‐Wide (IOBW) mode and the precipitation over South America (SA) in the 1901–2012 period. Composite analyses revealed that the ENSO teleconnections are IPO‐modulated due to the differential ENSO decaying speed, which is slower during the positive than negative IPO phase, for both El Niño (EN) and La Niña (LN) cases. Negative precipitation anomalies related to EN persist over northeastern SA until austral winter for the positive IPO phase (POS IPO), while significant opposite sign anomalies occur in this region for the negative IPO phase (NEG IPO). These results are associated with the Walker circulation's reversal during NEG IPO which is, in turn, accompanied by negative IOBW. During the POS IPO, the positive IOBW causes upward movements over there and, by continuity, downward movements over SA. In the NEG IPO, for LN events the wave train originating in the north of Australia propagates toward subtropical SA, which, coupled with the surface circulation, causes dryness in this region. In addition, the rapid decay of LN in the NEG IPO, followed by the emergence of EN, caused changes in the Walker circulation, such that enhanced upward movements occurred over the Pacific and SA region, and downward movements over the Indian Ocean until austral winter. In turn, the slower decay of the LN in the POS IPO maintains strong subsidence over the central Pacific and weak upward motions over western SA. So, the EN (LN) and positive (negative) IOBW during the POS (NEG) IPO prolong the scarcity of precipitation over equatorial (subtropical) SA. Introduction: The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the learning outcomes achieved by first‐year radiography students educated with either virtual reality (VR) simulation training or physical simulation training. The implementation of VR has been proposed to enhance learning in radiography students and provide a more effective and efficient approach to simulation. However, the learning outcomes achieved with this approach have not been widely investigated. Methods: Through stratified randomisation, 188 radiography students were allocated to one of two matched groups: a VR group (using Virtual Medical Coaching's Radiography simulation) and a physical simulation group (using Philips' X‐ray equipment). Both groups were taught 31 radiography views over one 25‐week semester. Both groups were assessed in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), using actors as patients in a physical X‐ray environment. Assessment was conducted by assigning objective count scores for five assessment criteria. Results: The VR group achieved shorter OSCE duration and fewer errors in moving equipment and patient positioning: these results were statistically significant (P < 0.00). There was no significant difference in the frequency of errors in radiographic exposure setting between the VR and the physical simulation group. The current findings concur with the limited number of published studies concerning VR simulation in radiography. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated superior effectiveness and efficiency in the VR group. This provides preliminary evidence to introduce VR simulation in the host institution and provide evidence that it may be possible to replace the use of physical simulation across other years of the degree.
