This paper shows the implementation of the Moth–Flame Optimization algorithm in a Cascade-H multilevel inverter with five and seven levels to determine the optimal switching sequence of the inverter's semiconductor devices. The algorithm was coded in Matlab software, and the obtained switching sequences were implemented in a Cascade-H multilevel inverter laboratory prototype, where the output voltage waveform was obtained using a digital oscilloscope. The experimental Total Harmonic Distortion was obtained using a power quality analyzer. The experimental results show the improvement of the Total Harmonic Distortion in the voltage output. These results were compared with other papers in the literature with different metaheuristic methods concerning the same modulation. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of employing the Moth–Flame Optimization Algorithm to significantly reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion, obtaining a lower value than most analyzed papers. Software usability is usually used in reference to the hierarchical software usability model by researchers and is an important aspect of user experience and software quality. Thus, evaluation of software usability is an essential parameter for managing and regulating a software. However, it has been difficult to establish a precise evaluation method for this problem. A large number of usability factors have been suggested by many researchers, each covering a set of different factors to increase the degree of user friendliness of a software. Therefore, the selection of the correct determining features is of paramount importance. This paper proposes an innovative metaheuristic algorithm for the selection of most important features in a hierarchical software model. A hierarchy-based usability model is an exhaustive interpretation of the factors, attributes, and its characteristics in a software at different levels. This paper proposes a modified version of grey wolf optimisation algorithm (GWO) termed as modified grey wolf optimization (MGWO) algorithm. The mechanism of this algorithm is based on the hunting mechanism of wolves in nature. The algorithm chooses a number of features which are then applied to software development life cycle models for finding out the best among them. The outcome of this application is also compared with the conventional grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWO), modified binary bat algorithm (MBBAT), modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA), and modified moth flame optimization (MMFO). The results show that MGWO surpasses all the other relevant optimizers in terms of accuracy and produces a lesser number of attributes equal to 8 as compared to 9 in MMFO and 12 in MBBAT and 19 in MWOA. The optimization and allocation of transport cost savings among stakeholders are two important issues that influence the satisfaction of information providers, drivers and passengers in ridesharing recommendation systems. For optimization issues, finding optimal solutions for nonconvex constrained discrete ridesharing optimization problems poses a challenge due to computational complexity. For the allocation of transport cost savings issues, the development of an effective method to allocate cost savings in ridesharing recommendation systems is an urgent need to improve the acceptability of ridesharing. The hybridization of different metaheuristic approaches has demonstrated its advantages in tackling the complexity of optimization problems. The principle of the hybridization of metaheuristic approaches is similar to a marriage of two people with the goal of having a happy ending. However, the effectiveness of hybrid metaheuristic algorithms is unknown a priori and depends on the problem to be solved. This is similar to a situation where no one knows whether a marriage will have a happy ending a priori. Whether the hybridization of the Firefly Algorithm (FA) with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) or Differential Evolution (DE) can work effectively in solving ridesharing optimization problems needs further study. Motivated by deficiencies in existing studies, this paper focuses on the effectiveness of hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for solving ridesharing problems based on the hybridization of FA with PSO or the hybridization of FA with DE. Another focus of this paper is to propose and study the effectiveness of a new method to allocate ridesharing cost savings to the stakeholders in ridesharing systems. The developed hybrid metaheuristic algorithms and the allocation method have been compared with examples of several application scenarios to illustrate their effectiveness. The results indicate that hybridizing FA with PSO creates a more efficient algorithm, whereas hybridizing FA with DE does not lead to a more efficient algorithm for the ridesharing recommendation problem. The parameter extraction of Photovoltaic (PV) cell and module is a necessary to simulate and evaluate the performance of the PV system. The parameter extraction is a complex and challenging task due to its non-linear nature. Researchers are used several metaheuristic algorithms to solve the non-linear problem of parameter extraction. However, the demand for most accurate and reliable methods is increasing to get precise estimation of parameters. In this paper, a novel hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed based on the Spotted-Hyena optimization (SHO) and Ant Lion Optimization (ALO). The hybrid method is called as Spotted Hyena - Ant Lion (SH-AL) optimization. The optimization algorithm is applied in two stages. In stage 1, essential parameters are identified and extracted using SHO and passed to stage 2. In stage 2, identified parameters are optimized using ALO for accurate model of PV cell. Different type of PV cells such as thin film, mono and multi crystalline are examined under various irradiance conditions to extract the parameters. The growth optimizer (GO) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm designed to tackle complex optimization problems. Despite its advantages of simplicity and high efficiency, GO often encounters localized stagnation when dealing with discretized, high-dimensional, and multi-constraint problems. To address these issues, this paper proposes an enhanced version of GO called CODGBGO. This algorithm incorporates three strategies to enhance its performance. Firstly, the Circle-OBL initialization strategy is employed to enhance the quality of the initial population. Secondly, an exploration strategy is implemented to improve population diversity and the algorithm's ability to escape local optimum traps. Finally, the exploitation strategy is utilized to enhance the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm. To validate the performance of CODGBGO, it is applied to solve the CEC2017, CEC2020, 18 feature selection problems, and 4 real engineering optimization problems. The Manta Ray Foraging Optimization Algorithm (MRFO) is a metaheuristic algorithm for solving real-world problems. However, MRFO suffers from slow convergence precision and is easily trapped in a local optimal. Hence, to overcome these deficiencies, this paper proposes an Improved MRFO algorithm (IMRFO) that employs Tent chaotic mapping, the bidirectional search strategy, and the Levy flight strategy. Among these strategies, Tent chaotic mapping distributes the manta ray more uniformly and improves the quality of the initial solution, while the bidirectional search strategy expands the search area. The Levy flight strategy strengthens the algorithm's ability to escape from local optimal. To verify IMRFO's performance, the algorithm is compared with 10 other algorithms on 23 benchmark functions, the CEC2017 and CEC2022 benchmark suites, and five engineering problems, with statistical analysis illustrating the superiority and significance of the difference between IMRFO and other algorithms. The phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (PPE) is a recently proposed meta-heuristic algorithm based on the evolutionary characteristics of the stick insect population. The algorithm simulates the features of convergent evolution, population competition, and population growth in the evolution process of the stick insect population in nature and realizes the above process through the population competition and growth model. Since the algorithm has a slow convergence speed and falls easily into local optimality, in this paper, it is mixed with the equilibrium optimization algorithm to make it easier to avoid the local optimum. Based on the hybrid algorithm, the population is grouped and processed in parallel to accelerate the algorithm's convergence speed and achieve better convergence accuracy. On this basis, we propose the hybrid parallel balanced phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (HP_PPE), and this algorithm is compared and tested on the CEC2017, a novel benchmark function suite. The results show that the performance of HP_PPE is better than that of similar algorithms. Finally, this paper applies HP_PPE to solve the AGV workshop material scheduling problem. Directional sensor networks (DSNs) are ad-hoc networks which are utilized in different industrial applications. Their usual engagements are to monitor and to perform the coverage of all specific targets in the observing fields permanently. These kinds of networks include numerous configurable directional sensors in which they can be utilized in one of the possible directions along with the one of their adjustable ranges. Although the energy harvesting methodology is being applied for these battery-hungry applications, the battery management and network lifetime maximization are still prominent challenges. In this paper, the network lifetime extension is formulated to a discrete optimization problem which is a famous non-deterministic polynomial time hardness (NP-Hard) problem. To solve this combinatorial problem, a discrete cuckoo search algorithm (D-CSA) is designed and is called in several rounds. A cover is a sub set of configured sensors capable of monitoring all targets in the observing field. In each round, the most efficient cover is constituted along with its activation time. In the determined activation time, the sensors in the cover are scheduled in wakeup mode whereas others are set in sleep mode to save energy. Despite other meta-heuristic algorithms, this proposed algorithm utilizes the novel defined discrete walking around procedures that makes to reach a good balance between exploration and exploitation in this complex search space. The proposed algorithm has been tested in different scenarios to be evaluated. The simulation results in the variety circumstances prove the superiority of the proposed algorithm is about 20.29%, 19.55%, 14.40%, 14.51%, 7.70% and 8.03% in term of average lifespan improvement against H-MNLAR, Hm-LifMax-BC, GA, ACOSC, H-GATS, and HDPSO algorithms, respectively. Snake optimizer (SO) is an optimization algorithm drawn from the reproductive habits of serpents. It exhibits outstanding effectiveness in solving continuous optimization problems. However, SO may face some performance challenges related to its population diversity and early convergence behavior. In this paper, we address the challenges of SO by introducing the Hybrid snake optimizer algorithm (HSOA). HSOA is a novel approach to optimization that incorporates two new optimization techniques into the SO algorithm. First, it incorporates a new opposition-based learning technique called Oppositional-mutual learning into the initialization stage of the SO algorithm. Second, it integrates dynamic polynomial mutation, which is an intelligent mutation method, into the initialization and optimization stages of the SO algorithm. These integrated approaches aim to increase the population's diversity of SO, while improving its searchability during its optimization stage. In power systems, the economic load dispatch (ELD) is an intricate optimization problem that becomes more challenging when the restrictions of the valve point effect (VPE) are incorporated into it. ELD with VPE is non-convex, lacking smoothness, and exhibiting nonlinearity that considers operational limitations expressed as both equality and inequality constraints to generate electricity. The suggested HSOA algorithm underwent evaluation and was compared with 47 renowned optimization algorithms across five real-world ELD problems with different specifications: generators with different unit capacities, transmission losses, prohibited operation zones, and Ramp Rate restrictions. The experimental results demonstrate that HSOA produces competitive solutions for the five real-world ELD problems. In detail, HSOA achieves the top rank in three cases of ELD problems with a 3-unit generator, and it secures the second and third positions in high-dimensional ELD problems with 40-unit and 80-unit generators, respectively. The statistical tests confirm the reliability and efficiency of HSOA. In addition, the effectiveness of HSOA was evaluated using the single-objective IEEE-CEC 2014 functions and compared to the results of eight popular metaheuristic algorithms. Reliability-based design is related to the performance analysis of engineering systems. The redundancy allocation problem is one of the most common problems in the reliability-based design approach. The redundancy allocation problem determines the redundancy level of components in a system to maximize system reliability, subject to several constraints. In recent years, obtaining solutions to reliability-related redundancy allocation problems by means of evolving meta-heuristic algorithms has appealed to researchers due to the several drawbacks of classical mathematical methods. Meta-heuristics have shown the potential of obtaining precise solution in optimization problems and many techniques have been applied in the literature for optimal redundancy allocation. In this paper, a recently developed Jaya optimization algorithm is proposed to be applied for redundancy allocation to maximize system reliability. The Jaya algorithm is a simple, population-based intelligent meta-heuristic algorithm consisting of a single phase and an algorithm-specific parameter-less algorithm. This paper aims to present an application of the Jaya algorithm for searching the optimal solution of two redundancy allocation problems from the literature with nonlinear constraints so that system reliability is maximized. The first problem is the over speed protection system for a gas turbine, whose control system is modelled as a four-stage series system. The objective is to determine the optimal level of redundancy of the valves of the protection system under cost and weight constraints. The second one is the redundancy allocation problem of a five-stage series system with volume, weight, and cost constraints. This paper presents a hybrid simplified grey wolf optimization algorithm combining with an modified pigeon inspired optimization algorithm. Firstly, a method of population initialization in the restricted area is designed to improve the average fitness of individuals. Then, a decay factor is designed to improve the search accuracy. At the same time, a new search position update formula is designed to balance the global search and local search ability, so as to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm. Furthermore, in order to verify the performance, the convergence, complexity and accuracy of the algorithm are analyzed by using linear difference equations. Finally, the comparison between different meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, the influence of parameters and their application in the path planning of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are tested. This paper applies the innovative idea of DLCI to PV array reconfiguration under various PSCs to capture the maximum output power of a PV generation system. DLCI is a hybrid algorithm that integrates multiple meta-heuristic algorithms. Through the competition and cooperation of the search mechanisms of different metaheuristic algorithms, the local exploration and global development of the algorithm can be effectively improved to avoid power mismatch of the PV system caused by the algorithm falling into a local optimum. A series of discrete operations are performed on DLCI to solve the discrete optimization problem of PV array reconfiguration. Two structures (DLCI-I and DLCI-II) are designed to verify the effect of increasing the number of sub-optimizers on the optimized performance of DLCI by simulation based on 10 cases of PSCs. The simulation shows that the increase of the number of sub-optimizers only gives a relatively small improvement on the DLCI optimization performance. DLCI has a significant effect on the reduction in the number of power peaks caused by PSC. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm, named Multi-Strategy Hybrid Harris Hawks Tunicate Swarm Optimization Algorithm (MSHHOTSA). The primary objective of MSHHOTSA is to address the limitations of the tunicate swarm algorithm, which include slow optimization speed, low accuracy, and premature convergence when dealing with complex problems. Firstly, inspired by the idea of the neighborhood and thermal distribution map, the hyperbolic tangent domain is introduced to modify the position of new tunicate individuals, which can not only effectively enhance the convergence performance of the algorithm but also ensure that the data generated between the unknown parameters and the old parameters have a similar distribution. Secondly, the nonlinear convergence factor is constructed to replace the original random factor c1 to coordinate the algorithm's local exploitation and global exploration performance, which effectively improves the ability of the algorithm to escape extreme values and fast convergence. Finally, the swarm update mechanism of the HHO algorithm is introduced into the position update of the TSA algorithm, which further balances the local exploitation and global exploration performance of the MSHHOTSA. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on eight standard benchmark functions, CEC2019 benchmark functions, four engineering design problems, and a PID parameter optimization problem. It was compared with seven recently proposed metaheuristic algorithms, including HHO and TSA. The results were analyzed and discussed using statistical indicators such as mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon's rank sum test, and average running time. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved algorithm (MSHHOTSA) exhibits higher local convergence, global exploration, robustness, and universality than BOA, GWO, MVO, HHO, TSA, ASO, and WOA algorithms under the same experimental conditions. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms play a crucial role in optimization problems. However, the traditional identification methods have the following problems: (1) difficulties in nonlinear data processing; (2) high error rates caused by local stagnation; and (3) low classification rates resulting from premature convergence. This paper proposed a variant based on the gray wolf optimization algorithm (GWO) with chaotic disturbance, candidate migration, and attacking mechanisms, naming it the enhanced gray wolf optimizer (EGWO), to solve the problem of premature convergence and local stagnation. The performance of the EGWO was tested on IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions, and the results of the EGWO were compared with the performance of three GWO variants, five traditional and popular algorithms, and six recent algorithms. In addition, EGWO optimized the weights and biases of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and proposed an EGWO-MLP disease identification model; the model was tested on IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions, and EGWO-MLP was verified by UCI dataset including Tic-Tac-Toe, Heart, XOR, and Balloon datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed EGWO-MLP model can effectively avoid local optimization problems and premature convergence and provide a quasi-optimal solution for the optimization problem. Arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) is a meta-heuristic optimization method based on mathematical operators proposed in recent years. Although it has good performance, it can also lead to insufficient local search ability and falling into local optima when solving complex optimization problems. In order to make up for the above shortcomings, the optimization performance of AOA is further improved. This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm based on AOA and particle swarm optimization (PSO) called HAOAPSO. Firstly, a compound opposition-based learning (COBL) strategy is introduced to broaden the scope of finding optimal solutions to help the algorithm better jump out of local optima. Secondly, PSO is combined with AOA that integrates COBL to improve the algorithm's local search ability, so as to improve the overall search efficiency of the algorithm. In addition, experiments are performed on 23 classical benchmark functions with different characteristics and five engineering design optimization problems, and the experimental results of HAOAPSO are compared with those of other well-known optimization algorithms to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) play a crucial role in securing networks and identifying malicious activity. This is a critical problem in cyber security. In recent years, metaheuristic optimization algorithms and deep learning techniques have been applied to IDS to improve their accuracy and efficiency. Generally, optimization algorithms can be used to boost the performance of IDS models. Deep learning methods, such as convolutional neural networks, have also been used to improve the ability of IDS to detect and classify intrusions. In this paper, we propose a new IDS model based on the combination of deep learning and optimization methods. First, a feature extraction method based on CNNs is developed. Then, a new feature selection method is used based on a modified version of Growth Optimizer (GO), called MGO. We use the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) to boost the search process of the GO. Extensive evaluation and comparisons have been conducted to assess the quality of the suggested method using public datasets of cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The applied techniques have shown promising results in identifying previously unknown attacks with high accuracy rates. End-to-end obstacle avoidance path planning for intelligent vehicles has been a widely studied topic. To resolve the typical issues of the solving algorithms, which are weak global optimization ability, ease in falling into local optimization and slow convergence speed, an efficient optimization method is proposed in this paper, based on the whale optimization algorithm. We present an adaptive adjustment mechanism which can dynamically modify search behavior during the iteration process of the whale optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, in order to coordinate the global optimum and local optimum of the solving algorithm, we introduce a controllable variable which can be reset according to specific routing scenarios. The evolutionary strategy of differential variation is also applied in the algorithm presented to further update the location of search individuals. In numerical experiments, we compared the proposed algorithm with the following six well-known swarm intelligence optimization algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bat Algorithm (BA), Gray Wolf Optimization Algorithm (GWO), Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), Ant Lion Algorithm (ALO), and the traditional Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Our method gave rise to better results for the typical twenty-three benchmark functions. In regard to path planning problems, we observed an average improvement of 18.95% in achieving optimal solutions and 77.86% in stability. In many disciplines, including pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, image analysis, and bioinformatics, data clustering is a common analytical tool for data statistics. The majority of conventional clustering techniques are slow to converge and frequently get stuck in local optima. In this regard, population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are used to overcome the problem of getting trapped in local optima and increase the convergence speed. An asymmetric approach to clustering the asymmetric self-organizing map is proposed in this paper. The Interactive Autodidactic School (IAS) is one of these population-based metaheuristic and asymmetry algorithms used to solve the clustering problem. The chaotic IAS algorithm also increases exploitation and generates a better population. In the proposed model, ten different chaotic maps and the intra-cluster summation fitness function have been used to improve the results of the IAS. According to the simulation findings, the IAS based on the Chebyshev chaotic function outperformed other chaotic IAS iterations and other metaheuristic algorithms. The efficacy of the proposed model is finally highlighted by comparing its performance with optimization algorithms in terms of fitness function and convergence rate. In recent years, there is massive development of new metaheuristics as stochastic methods. Meanwhile, there is not any metaheuristics is powerful to handle all problems as stated in the no-free-lunch (NFL) theory. Based on this circumstance, this paper introduces a new swarm-based metaheuristics with the main strategy moving toward the resultant of better swarm members and avoiding the resultant of worse swarm members called group better-worse algorithm (GBWA). It consists of five searches: moving toward the best swarm member, moving toward the resultant of better swarm members, moving away from the resultant of worse swarm members, searching locally, and jumping to the opposite area. GBWA is then evaluated in three ways. The first evaluation is a comparative evaluation where GBWA is compared to five recent metaheuristics: coati optimization algorithm (COA), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), clouded leopard optimization (CLO), total interaction algorithm (TIA), and osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). The second evaluation is the individual search evaluation. The third evaluation is hyperparameter test. The collection of 23 classic functions is chosen as the use case in all evaluations. The result of the first evaluation shows that GBWA is better than COA, ASBO, CLO, TIA, and OOA in 20, 21, 20, 21, and 21 functions consecutively. With the advancement of the robotics world, many path-planning algorithms have been proposed. One of the important algorithms is the Rapidly Exploring Random Tree (RRT) but with the drawback of not guaranteeing the optimal path. This paper solves this problem by proposing a Memorized RRT Optimization Algorithm (MRRTO Algorithm) using memory as an optimization step. The algorithm obtains a single path from the start point, and another from the target point to store only the last visited new node. The method for computing the nearest node depends on the position, when a new node is added, the RRT function checks if there is another node closer to the new node rather than that is closer to the goal point. Simulation results with different environments show that the MRRTO outperforms the original RRT Algorithm, graph algorithms, and metaheuristic algorithms in terms of reducing time consumption, path length, and number of nodes used. A new swarm-based metaheuristic, namely the enriched coati osprey algorithm (ECOA), is proposed in this paper. As its name suggests, ECOA hybridizes two new metaheuristics, the coati optimization algorithm (COA) and the osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). ECOA is constructed by five searches performed sequentially by the swarm members. The first three are directed searches, while the last two are neighborhood searches. All three directed searches are adopted from COA and OOA. Meanwhile, the four-bordered neighborhood search is developed based on a new approach. During the assessment, ECOA was challenged to overcome the set of 23 functions and contended with five new metaheuristics: total interaction algorithm (TIA), golden search optimization (GSO), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), COA, and OOA. The result shows that ECOA outperforms TIA, GSO, ASBO, COA, and OOA in 16, 23, 18, 21, and 21 functions. Meanwhile, the individual search test result shows that the directed searches perform better than the neighborhood searches. Metaheuristic intelligent optimization algorithms are effective methods for solving high-dimensional nonlinear complex optimization problems. The slime mould algorithm is a novel intelligent optimization algorithm proposed in 2020. However, the basic slime mould algorithm still has some shortcomings, such as slow convergence rate, easy to fall into local extremum, and unbalanced exploration and development capability. To further improve and expand the optimization ability and application scope of the slime mould algorithm, and enhance its performance in solving large-scale complex optimization problems, this paper proposes a slime mould algorithm (PPMSMA) based on Gaussian perturbation and phased position update, positive variation, and multi-strategy greedy selection. Firstly, Gaussian perturbation and phased position update mechanism are introduced to avoid the difficulty of the algorithm to jump out of the local extrema and also to speed up the convergence of the algorithm. Then, a positive variation strategy based on the sine cosine mechanism is introduced to move the variation of the population towards a better direction. Finally, a multi-strategy greedy selection mechanism is introduced, which effectively improves the search ability of the algorithm. The analysis and research on the optimization ability and performance of metaheuristic algorithms mainly include two aspects: theoretical analysis and experimental testing. Theoretical analysis has always been a relatively weak link in the research of metaheuristic algorithms, and there is currently no clear and effective method formed. For experimental testing, although there are more methods, they often lack systematization and adequacy. In this paper, a more complete, fine-grained and systematic approach to theoretical and experimental analysis is proposed. In the theoretical analysis part, the time complexity and spatial complexity of the PPMSMA algorithm are analytically proved to be the same as the basic slime mould algorithm, and the probability measure method is used to prove that PPMSMA algorithm can converge to the global optimal solution. In the simulation experiment section, the PPMSMA algorithm is compared with multiple sets of 10 representative comparison algorithms on the CEC2017 complex test function set suite for optimization accuracy analysis, Friedman comprehensive ranking analysis, average optimization rate analysis of PPMSMA relative to other algorithms, convergence curve analysis, and Wilcoxon rank-sum test analysis. To further examine the scalability of the improved algorithm in solving large-scale optimization problems, PPMSMA is compared with the above 10 comparative algorithms under 1000 dimensional conditions in the large-scale global optimization test set CEC2010, and the solution stability of each algorithm is analyzed through violin plots. The results show that the PPMSMA algorithm has significantly improved convergence performance, optimization accuracy, and solution stability in both high-dimensional and large-scale complex problems, and has significant advantages compared to multiple sets of 10 representative comparative algorithms. Finally, PPMSMA and 10 other comparative algorithms are used to solve engineering design optimization problems with different complexities. Access points (APs) are used to define coordinates in an indoor positioning system with Wi-Fi. These systems utilize existing infrastructure and Wi-Fi APs to find out the exact location of a device based on its RSSI and MAC address. The accuracy of these devices usually depends on the number of APs located nearby and the environment in which they are deployed. Therefore, the ideal selection of these points increases the discernibility of the localization technique. The rapid development of metaheuristic algorithms in recent years has demonstrated their effectiveness in resolving challenging optimization issues. The primary research goal is to investigate how to enhance indoor localization accuracy with metaheuristic algorithms and to assess the efficacy of positioning using these methods. In this paper, we propose a novel optimization algorithm called the Improved Pathfinder Algorithm (IPFA) using metaheuristic hybridization, where our contribution is twofold. The IPFA's superiority in optimization is used to choose the important APs. Subsequently, to maintain the generality of the localization performance, we created a feature-based classification model for the chosen AP subsets. Two prominent benchmark datasets, UJIIndoorLoc and JUIndoorLoc, were used to test the proposed framework. The proposed Indoor Localization framework attained an accuracy of 98.26% with a mean absolute error (MAE) of approximately 0.79 m. This paper presents two hybrid optimization methods known as PSOHHO and DPSOHHO optimization algorithms. In the first method, using a number of formulae, the top populations are exchanged between the two algorithms and a new population is created and in the second method, we adopted the parallel optimization and optimized its performance. In this method, unlike other parallel methods, the population does not remain constant. With this ability, the strengths of an algorithm can be used to compensate for the weaknesses of the other algorithm. In these methods, no changes are made to the algorithms. The main goal is to use existing algorithms. These methods attain the optimal solution in the shortest time possible. Two algorithms of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Harris Hawks's optimization (HHO) are used to present this method and two truss samples and CEC209 are considered to confirm the performance of this method. Today, intelligent optimization has become a science that few researchers have not used in dealing with problems in their field. Diversity and flexibility have made the use, efficiency, and usefulness of various nature-inspired optimization methods, such as evolutionary and meta-heuristic algorithms, more evident in such problems. This work first provides a comprehensive overview of all considerations governing various optimization problems with detailed corresponding categories. Then, the most comprehensive review and recent methods (during 1965–2022) are presented in evolution-based, swarm-based, physics-based, human-based, and hybrid-based categories. More than 320 new algorithms have been reviewed. All specifications including authors, year, abbreviation, inspired source, controls, and their application are considered in this regard. Statistical analyzes of papers and publishers, annually and for 57 years, along with their ranking, are also examined in detail. In most data dimensionality reduction tasks, feature selection (FS) is an essential preprocessing stage. The slime mould algorithm (SMA) is a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm. This paper proposes a feature selection method for banknote dirtiness recognition based on mathematical functions driven slime mould algorithm. This method is applied to the feature selection of banknote dirtiness recognition, and the Lévy flight operator is used to replace the control parameter vc in SMA, and a series of mathematical functions are added to replace the control parameter vb in the slime mould algorithm to enhance the global search capability. Test results show that this method achieves the highest accuracy of 76.85 % in recognizing the banknote dirtiness. Additionally, by applying the same method to feature selection and recognition of dirtiness for the left middle white area images of banknotes, the highest accuracy reaches 74.99 %. This suggests that the left middle white area can essentially replace the whole banknote. To verify the performance of the proposed feature selection method, comparative tests with four other optimization algorithms are carried out, and the results demonstrate that three improvement strategies can effectively improve the performance of SMA while maintaining a balance between exploration and exploitation. Tests have revealed that these three algorithms have significant advantages over the past SMA in terms of recognition accuracy and convergence speed when it comes to identifying the dirtiness of banknotes. This paper introduces an improved differential evolution algorithm based on cooperative multi-population (CMp-DE for short), which combines diverse population collaboration mechanisms and catalytic factors into an improved differential evolution framework. By harnessing various population collaboration mechanisms, the algorithm enhances the diversity of individuals within populations during initial iterations and reduces it during later iterations, thereby harmonizing the algorithm's exploratory and exploitative capabilities. Furthermore, a novel mutation operator is proposed that divides the iterative process into exploration and exploitation phases, thereby augmenting the algorithm's global exploration prowess. Lastly, a catalytic operator is introduced to generate new individuals near post-crossover individuals based on a specified rule, which enhances the algorithm's ability to escape local optima and increasing stability. The proposed CMp-DE is benchmarked against the CEC2017 benchmark test functions and compared against 13 algorithms, including five differential evolution algorithms and their variants, as well as eight state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimization algorithms. This evaluation assesses the CMp-DE's solution accuracy, convergence, stability, and scalability. Finally, the applicability of CMp-DE is validated by addressing six practical optimization problems. The experimental results show that CMp-DE surpasses other algorithms in terms of both convergence accuracy and robustness. Moreover, integrating a catalytic operator with other optimization algorithms notably boosts performance in convergence accuracy and stability. The inclusion of the catalytic operator has significantly enhanced the performance of algorithms compared to their performance before its addition. This paper introduces a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm named Clustering Wavelet Opposition-based Marine Predators Algorithm (CWOMPA) to address some limitations present in the well-established Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA). CWOMPA incorporates three key strategies: a fuzzy clustering approach for escaping local optima, using wavelet basis function-based impact coefficient adjustment for elites to prevent premature convergence, and finally an adaptive opposition-based learning strategy for maintaining population diversity. Compared with some recent meta-heuristic algorithms, extensive evaluations conducted affirm that CWOMPA achieves the best Friedman rank, 4.30 and 1.95 respectively, on 23 benchmark functions and the CEC 2017 benchmark set. Not only does CWOMPA demonstrate significant effectiveness on six constrained problems from the CEC 2020 real-world benchmarks, but also when applied to 14 medical datasets, it gains superior Friedman ranks in terms of selected features, classification accuracy, F-Score, and objective function value, 2.5, 2.25, 2.96, 2.93 respectively, outperforming other common methods. Finally, CWOMPA exhibits the highest classification accuracy across all datasets and the best F-Score performance in nine datasets compared to traditional feature selection algorithms. Multilevel Thresholding Image Segmentation (MTIS) methods are among the efficient methods for image segmentation. In MTIS methods, it is very important to find the thresholds that gives the best performance for the MTIS and better separate and detect the objects on the image from the image background. Meta-Heuristic (MH) algorithms are among the strategies that can achieve good results in obtaining optimal thresholds to solve this problem. In this paper, we use the combination of Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) to improve AOA in exploitation phase, and achieve an optimal threshold vector for MTIS. Therefore, our new hybrid AOA-HHO algorithm solves the MTIS problem with better quality than both AOA and HHO algorithms and some other MH algorithms, and can obtain better thresholds that increase the performance of the MTIS system than AOA and HHO. AOA is powerful in the exploration, and HHO in exploitation phase is powerful. Therefore, AOA-HHO uses the features of both algorithms to search the entire search space locally and globally to find the best find the solution, the high power of the AOA exploration phase, and the high power of the HHO exploitation phase. Also, we use a mathematical equation as the fitness function, that is obtained by using image features. A series of experiments were performed using seven different threshold levels on the test images. This study introduces a novel adjustment to the firefly algorithm (FA) through the integration of rare instances of cannibalism among fireflies, culminating in the development of the honeybee mating-based firefly algorithm (HBMFA). The IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) 2005 benchmark functions served as a rigorous testing ground to evaluate the efficacy of the new algorithm in diverse optimization scenarios. Moreover, thorough statistical analyses, including two-sample t-tests and fitness function evaluation analysis, the algorithm's optimization capabilities were robustly validated. Additionally, the coefficient of determination, used as an objective function, was utilized with real-world wind speed data from the SR-25 station in Brazil to assess the algorithm's applicability in modeling wind speed parameters. Notably, HBMFA achieved superior solution accuracy, with enhancements averaging 0.025% compared to conventional FA, despite a moderate increase in execution time of approximately 18.74%. Furthermore, this dominance persisted when the algorithm's performance was compared with other common optimization algorithms. However, some limitations exist, including the longer execution time of HBMFA, raising concerns about its practical applicability in scenarios where computational efficiency is critical. Additionally, while the new algorithm demonstrates improvements in fitness values, establishing the statistical significance of these differences compared to FA is not consistently achieved, which warrants further investigation. The Dung beetle optimization (DBO) algorithm, devised by Jiankai Xue in 2022, is known for its strong optimization capabilities and fast convergence. However, it does have certain limitations, including insufficiently random population initialization, slow search speed, and inadequate global search capabilities. Drawing inspiration from the mathematical properties of the Sinh and Cosh functions, we proposed a new metaheuristic algorithm, Sinh–Cosh Dung Beetle Optimization (SCDBO). By leveraging the Sinh and Cosh functions to disrupt the initial distribution of DBO and balance the development of rollerball dung beetles, SCDBO enhances the search efficiency and global exploration capabilities of DBO through nonlinear enhancements. These improvements collectively enhance the performance of the dung beetle optimization algorithm, making it more adept at solving complex real-world problems. To evaluate the performance of the SCDBO algorithm, we compared it with seven typical algorithms using the CEC2017 test functions. Scientists have initiated the examination of living behavioral patterns of organisms, with a primary focus on their quest for sustenance and evasion of predators to ensure their survival. This research endeavors to formulate mathematical models capable of emulating these behaviors, thereby empowering these models to address intricate and demanding mathematical quandaries. In this investigation, two distinct strategies were employed to enhance problem-solving capabilities. The first strategy entailed synergizing the North Goshawk Optimization Algorithm (NGOA) with fuzzy logic (FL). Fuzzy logic was leveraged to impart fuzziness to the initial population and allocate membership grades to all community elements within the confines of the fuzzy logic framework. The second strategy involved the integration of two hybridization approaches: the first through the community and the second via equations between the Fuzzy North Goshawk Optimization Algorithm (NGOA) and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Cloud computing has gained significant recognition due to its ability to provide a broad range of online services and applications. Nevertheless, existing commercial cloud computing models demonstrate an appropriate design by concentrating computational assets, such as preservation and server infrastructure, in a limited number of large-scale worldwide data facilities. Optimizing the deployment of virtual machines (VMs) is crucial in this scenario to ensure system dependability, performance, and minimal latency. A significant barrier in the present scenario is the load distribution, particularly when striving for improved energy consumption in a hypothetical grid computing framework. This design employs load-balancing techniques to allocate different user workloads across several virtual machines. To address this challenge, we propose using the twin-fold moth flame technique, which serves as a very effective optimization technique. Developers intentionally designed the twin-fold moth flame method to consider various restrictions, including energy efficiency, lifespan analysis, and resource expenditures. It provides a thorough approach to evaluating total costs in the cloud computing environment. When assessing the efficacy of our suggested strategy, the study will analyze significant metrics such as energy efficiency, lifespan analysis, and resource expenditures. This investigation aims to enhance cloud computing techniques by developing a new optimization algorithm that considers multiple factors for effective virtual machine placement and load balancing. The last few years have seen an increasing demand for high-capacity Internet services, and this need has intensified in the years 2020 and 2021. In 2020 and 2021, Internet usage grew by 50% in several European countries, mainly due to home office, video streaming, hybrid teaching, and others. High-capacity optical networks usually meet this growing demand for Internet services. Thus, investigations that can improve the quality of optical networks are highly relevant in the current context. One of the research problems in this area is related to the physical topology design (PTD) of optical networks, which is classified as NP-hard. Several studies on PTD consider the application of meta-heuristics that obtain suboptimal solutions in a time compatible with engineering applications. However, meta-heuristics and local search techniques have been combined in several other optimization problems, which is not typical for the PTD problem. This paper proposes a solution to the PTD problem that combines a known multipurpose optimization algorithm, the NSGA-III, with operators considering the domain-specific knowledge of the problem to provide superior-quality networks. In order to better understand and analyze population-based meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, this paper proposed a new hybrid algorithm combined Lévy flight with modified Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) , which is called LMWOAGWO to discard the dross and select the essence. Firstly, the population is initialized by using the uniform distribution space combined with the pseudo-reverse learning strategy, which lays the foundation for global search. Then, modifications were made to both WOA and GWO. For WOA algorithm, random adjustment control parameters strategy and different chaotic maps are used to adjust the main parameters of WOA to avoid the algorithm falling into local optimum in the later stage. For GWO algorithm, a new optimal solution is added to the grey wolf population to increase the optimal update position of the algorithm. On this basis, the dynamic weighting strategy is introduced to improve the convergence accuracy and convergence speed of the algorithm. Subsequently, new conditions were added during the WOA exploitation phase to formulate LMWOAGWO and the greedy strategy is used to retain better iteration update locations. Finally, Lévy flight is used to improve the global search ability of the algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments were conducted using 23 standard test benchmark functions, 25 CEC2005 functions, 15 popular benchmark functions and 10 CEC2019 functions to test the performance of LMWOAGWO compared with other well-known swarm optimization algorithms. Experimental and statistical results show that the performance of LMWOAGWO algorithm is better than many state-of-the-art algorithms. Then, 22 real-world optimization problems were used to further study the effectiveness of LMWOAGWO. Winners of CEC2020 Real World Single Objective Constraint Optimization Competition, such as iLSHADE ϵ algorithm, sCMAgES algorithm, COLSHADE algorithm and EnMODE algorithm are selected as four comparison algorithms in real world optimization problems. Experimental results show that the proposed LMWOAGWO has the capability to solve real-world optimization problems. Finally, the application efficiency of LMWOAGWO in solving two basic optimization problems in wireless networks is briefly introduced, and compared with the original WOA and GWO. Recent breakthroughs in wireless power transfer technology have been promising for empowering and enabling seamless operation of wireless sensors and developing sustainable systems such as wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs). Relying on this technology and focusing on WRSNs, this paper proposes an adaptive charging scheduling algorithm called the three-stage fuzzy metaheuristic algorithm (TSFM) by using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and a multiobjective function designed to meet the application requirements of WRSNs in smart cities. The TSFM algorithm benefits from the WOA for the automated configuration and optimization of the fuzzy rule-base table in a three-stage fuzzy inference system for clustering, routing, and scheduling mobile charging simultaneously. Unlike the other methods, the TSFM algorithm determines the ratio of effect of fuzzy input parameters of every stage based on application and environment in addition to considering effective parameters for every stage, especially for charging scheduling (e.g. , the energy of a charge-request node, the distance between a charge-request node and a mobile charging (MC), the density of a charge-request node, the average energy consumption rate of a charge-request node, and the time elapsed after a charge request). Furthermore, for the proper distribution of energy in a network, better responsiveness, and optimal use of a charging robot, two energy thresholds are defined in the TSFM algorithm, namely as the charging request issue threshold and the charging operation completion threshold. The TSFM algorithm is adaptable to applications, environments, and requirements of WRSNs not only by using the features of nodes (as the fuzzy input parameters) but also by considering the application-specific features, environments, and infrastructure (e.g. , network size, number of nodes, base station (BS) positions, and designer's goals) within the process of optimizing tunable parameters. The TSFM algorithm was evaluated and compared with some common methods such as FCFS, NJNP, and ESS in terms of functional metrics such as energy utility, charging latency, survival rate, death rate of nodes, system stability, number of packets received by BS, number of request nodes, number of alive nodes, average residual energy, adaptability analysis, and statistical validation in two scenarios and six applications. According to the simulation results, the proposed TSFM algorithm improved the performance criteria and outperformed the other methods by far in terms of application. For process control in engineering applications, the fewer the coding lines of optimization algorithms, the more applications there are. Therefore, this work develops a new straightforward metaheuristic optimization algorithm named the propagation search algorithm (PSA), stirred by the wave propagation of the voltage and current along long transmission lines. The mathematical models of the voltage and current are utilized in modeling the PSA, where the voltage and current are the search agents. The propagation constant of the transmission line is the control parameter for the exploitation and exploration of the PSA. After that, the robustness of the PSA is verified using 23 famous testing functions. The statistical tests, comprising mean, standard deviation, and p-values, for 20 independent optimization experiments are utilized to confirm the robustness of the PSA to find the best result and the significant difference between the outcomes of the PSA and those of the compared algorithms. Finally, the proposed PSA is applied to find the optimum design parameters of four engineering design problems, including a three-bar truss, compression spring, pressure vessel, and welded beam. The primary objective of this study is to delve into the application and validation of the Resistance Capacitance Optimization Algorithm (RCOA)—a new, physics-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm. The RCOA, intriguingly inspired by the time response of a resistance–capacitance circuit to a sudden voltage fluctuation, has been earmarked for solving complex numerical and engineering design optimization problems. Uniquely, the RCOA operates without any control/tunable parameters. In the first phase of this study, we evaluated the RCOA's credibility and functionality by deploying it on a set of 23 benchmark test functions. This was followed by thoroughly examining its application in eight distinct constrained engineering design optimization scenarios. This methodical approach was undertaken to dissect and understand the algorithm's exploration and exploitation phases, leveraging standard benchmark functions as the yardstick. The principal findings underline the significant effectiveness of the RCOA, especially when contrasted against various state-of-the-art algorithms in the field. Beyond its apparent superiority, the RCOA was put through rigorous statistical non-parametric testing, further endorsing its reliability as an innovative tool for handling complex engineering design problems. The conclusion of this research underscores the RCOA's strong performance in terms of reliability and precision, particularly in tackling constrained engineering design optimization challenges. The Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm is a new metaheuristic algorithm proposed in recent years. Due to the shortcomings of this algorithm in solving complex high-dimensional optimization problems with a slow convergence speed, low accuracy, and the high likelihood to fall into local optimum, a mixed Harris hawks optimization (MHHO) algorithm based on the pinhole imaging strategy is proposed, including four strategies to improve the optimization performance. Firstly, the pinhole imaging strategy is used to enable the Harris' hawks to approach the optimal solution faster and accelerate convergence. Secondly, the spiral parameter is introduced into the exploration phase to help the searching paths of the Harris' hawks more diverse and improve the global search ability of the algorithm. Finally, the greedy strategy of the aquila optimization algorithm and the position update strategy of the flower pollination optimization algorithm are embedded in the exploitation stage to make the algorithm jump out of local optimum effectively. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed MHHO algorithm, it is compared with the classical HHO algorithm and 16 other state-of-the-art algorithms, and extensively tested on 23 well-known benchmark functions, the IEEE CEC2017 test sets, and three complex constrained engineering optimization problems. The test results show that MHHO achieves the top ranking on both the benchmark functions and the CEC2017 test sets, demonstrating its superior performance in terms of faster convergence speed and higher accuracy. This study was conducted to promote a new adaptive cone algorithm (ACA) algorithm. ACA is a metaheuristic technique based on swarm intelligence. ACA contains three steps. Each agent moves closer to the global reference in the first step. Then, each agent searches for a better solution around the current solution in the second step. The global reference searches for better solutions around it in the third step. This algorithm is named cone because the local space size declines linearly during the iterative process. ACA introduces a new adaptability model to improve the exploration strategy when a better solution cannot be achieved. It is conducted by enlarging the local solution space. ACA is challenged to find the final solution for theoretical and practical problems. The 23 functions are chosen as theoretical optimization problems. The portfolio optimization problem is selected as the practical problem. ACA is compared with five algorithms: particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), marine predator optimization (MPA), average subtraction-based optimizer (ASBO), and pelican optimization algorithm (POA). The result shows that ACA is competitive in finding the optimal solution for 23 functions and outperforms all sparing algorithms in achieving the highest total capital gain in tackling the portfolio optimization problem. ACA is superior to PSO, GWO, MPA, ASBO, and POA in solving 20, 11, 13, 4, and 21 functions, respectively. In the future, ACA can be implemented in solving various practical optimization problems. The U-Net architecture is a prominent technique for image segmentation. However, a significant challenge in utilizing this algorithm is the selection of appropriate hyperparameters. In this study, we aimed to address this issue using an evolutionary approach. We conducted experiments on four different geometric datasets (triangle, kite, parallelogram, and square), with 1,000 training samples and 200 test samples. Initially, we performed image segmentation without the evolutionary approach, manually adjusting the U-Net hyperparameters. The average accuracy rates for the geometric images were 0.94463, 0.96289, 0.96962, and 0.93971, respectively. Subsequently, we proposed a hybrid version of the U-Net architecture, incorporating the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) for an evolutionary approach. This method automatically discovered the optimal hyperparameters, resulting in improved image segmentation performance. The average accuracy rates achieved by the proposed method were 0.99418, 0.99673, 0.99143, and 0.99946, respectively, for the geometric images. Wind resource is one of the most promising renewable energy, which has become a suitable replacement for fossil fuels. Optimizing the transferring wind energy from a wind turbine is essential to obtain the maximum power output as other variables are uncontrollable. This paper presents four different optimization algorithms, namely ant lion optimization (ALO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and crow search optimization (CSO), considering a hybrid decision-making model to compare the performances of wind energy optimization. In the first phase, the evolutionary algorithms are defined based on several factors to meet the need for wind energy based on volumetric and time reliability, reversibility, and vulnerability as well as evaluate optimized energy to the subscriber from the Gansu region. In the second phase, the ordinal priority approach (OPA) is coupled with VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method to rank the evolutionary algorithms. Then, the results are compared with the absolute optimal response based on the nonlinear programming method obtained from GAMS software. The results demonstrate that an ALO outperforms other algorithms. The average accuracy of ALO is 92%. CSO is the least accurate with 55% of the absolute optimal response. ALO is found to be faster, more efficient, and achieved economy and reliability as compared to other optimization algorithms for solving the problem under consideration. Robust optimization is concerned with finding an optimal solution that is insensitive to uncertainties and has been widely used in solving real-world optimization problems. However, most robust optimization methods suffer from high computational costs and poor convergence. To alleviate the above problems, an improved robust optimization algorithm is proposed. First, to reduce the computational cost, the second-order Taylor series surrogate model is used to approximate the robustness indices. Second, to strengthen the convergence, the state transition algorithm is studied to explore the whole search space for candidate solutions, while sequential quadratic programming is adopted to exploit the local area. Third, to balance the robustness and optimality of candidate solutions, a preference-based selection mechanism is investigated which effectively determines the promising solution. The proposed robust optimization method is applied to obtain the optimal solutions of seven examples that are subject to decision variables and parameter uncertainties. Comparative studies with other robust optimization algorithms (robust genetic algorithm, Kriging metamodel-assisted robust optimization method, etc.) show that the proposed method can obtain accurate and robust solutions with less computational cost. Traditional trajectory-planning methods are unable to achieve time optimization, resulting in slow response times to unexpected situations. To address this issue and improve the smoothness of joint trajectories and the movement time of quadruped robots, we propose a trajectory-planning method based on time optimization. This approach improves the whale optimization algorithm with simulated annealing (IWOA-SA) together with adaptive weights to prevent the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) from falling into local optima and to balance its exploration and exploitation abilities. We also use Markov chains of stochastic process theory to analyze the global convergence of the proposed algorithm. The results show that our optimization algorithm has stronger optimization ability and stability when compared to six representative algorithms using six different test function suites in multiple dimensions. Additionally, the proposed optimization algorithm consistently constrains the angular velocity of each joint within the range of kinematic constraints and reduces joint running time by approximately 6.25%, which indicates the effectiveness of this algorithm.
