This paper is dedicated to the work of British female travellers who visited Spain and, more specifically, Andalusia, from the 18th century to the present. Their works offer a sensitive, first-hand view that is different from that of their male contemporaries and, on numerous occasions, question or contradict the supposed myths, comments, and opinions of their compatriots, even those of renowned Hispanophiles as Richard Ford or George Borrow. Unfortunately, practically all the works on Spain by female travellers have remained forgotten, ignored, or silenced, and have not been translated into other languages. With the aim of making women's contributions to travel literature more visible, this paper offers an unpublished chronological list of women travellers in Andalusia and their works from the 18th century to the present, compiled thanks to consultations with the collections of the library of the Instituto Cervantes in London. As a sample of the sensitive and emotional vision that appreciates the essence of the rural and human landscape of Andalusia, compared to other technical accounts of male writers, we analyse Cositas Españolas, or Every Day Life in Spain (1875) by Annie Jane Harvey, a work not yet translated into Spanish and whose visibility we claim from this work. The study shows Harvey to be a privileged "observer", whose alternative vision to that of other male travellers proves an optimistic defence of the values of the Spanish people. The criteria on green public procurement of the European Union establish that the economic budgets of building projects must be complemented by their derived environmental and social costs. These criteria are currently being adapted to the requirements related to the circular economy, such as the use of methods to evaluate buildings environmentally. However, most methods available in the European and Spanish markets require prior training, which makes their use difficult. This paper presents an evaluation method, CEACE, for housing construction based on the determination of their footprints (ecological, carbon, and water footprints), also called the footprint family, to which the economic and social evaluation is added, as is the quantification of the construction and demolition waste generated. This method is validated with the assessment of fifteen residential buildings in Andalusia and creates an indicator that will allow technicians, companies, and administrations to evaluate projects in accordance with the criteria of green public procurement. This paper analyses the strategy developed thus far to have Andalusian olive-growing landscapes included as a Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List (UNESCO). The research method used is descriptive, reflexive and prospective, and seeks to achieve a systematic and holistic overview of a complex reality. In addition to the corresponding bibliographical review, the research has been nourished by qualitative information from land surveys (field visits) and interviews with experts consulted during the preparation of the two technical dossiers of the candidacy produced so far. The results include the rationale for Outstanding Universal Value and the basis of the protection and management plan for the property. Subsequently, the paper discusses the possibilities for rural development that can be derived from this initiative through the virtuous interactions between the property, the region and the food (olive oil) obtained from traditional olive groves. The advent and spread of social networking sites have been the object of study of most of the research performed on political communication over the past 25 years. However, more recent inquiries have indicated that the political establishment still has not fully exploited the interactive potential of these media. Against this backdrop, this paper presents the results of a systematic study of the communication between the main political parties in Andalusia (the most populous region in Spain) and the citizenry on Twitter, with the aim of confirming whether or not it is really interactive and participatory. To this end, the spotlight is placed here on those parties most active online and on the way in which they foster interactivity, the subjects that they broach and the functions of their messages. The data were obtained from a content analysis of the tweets (n = 10,729) posted on the official profiles of the main Andalusian parties in 2020. The results indicate that there was no interactive communication with the citizenry, despite the fact that they were in much need of reassurance owing to the unprecedented situation to which the COVID-19 pandemic had given rise. The Andalusian political parties still use social networking sites for the one-way dissemination of information, which shows that they are not, in practice, horizontal and participatory spaces of communication, as the cyber-optimists, defending the innovation hypothesis, predicted. Educational systems have the common objective of coordinating efforts to improve students' communicative competence and facilitate the development of their oral and written language skills for personal, social, academic, and professional purposes. The work on communicative competence from a school perspective has various antecedents in the international educational context. In Spain, the improvement of students' linguistic communication competence in all the languages spoken in the schools (mother languages and second languages) has been addressed through different initiatives, among which the SLP (School Language Project) programme, better known in Spanish as Proyecto Lingüístico de Centro (PLC), which has been implemented in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia since the 2013–2014 academic year, stands out. The aim of this paper is to examine the opinions of the teacher coordinators involved in the implementation of SLP in their schools as well as their perceptions about the impact of external factors in the process and, lastly, to highlight the main implications emerging from this global vision for the implementation of interdisciplinary projects to improve LCC (Linguistic Communication Competence) schools. This study is based on the feedback provided by the coordinators of the SLP initiative in Andalusian institutions over five academic years. The findings have been studied utilising a qualitative methodology and assessed using the Atlas Ti 6.0 software, then grouped into five diverse categories. Numerous studies suggest that cultural heritage can be a powerful resource for local development when managed from the principles of sustainability and resilience. This paper aims to make a significant contribution to the designation of heritage assets. The case of the Andalusian region of southern Spain presents both qualitative and quantitative differences when a comparative study is made between urban centers, medium-sized cities, small towns, and rural areas. Subsequently, the paper proposes diverse methodologies to improve heritage designation in vulnerable territories through the incorporation of collaborative methods and digital humanities. The final objective is to conclude how to improve cultural heritage location and information processes to maximize social impact in areas suffering from aging and depopulation problems. During the last decade, Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has prioritised measures focused on sustainability and quality over production. The purpose of the AGRICORE project is to develop a tool based on agent-based modelling to assist policymakers in the design of improved policies. The present study belongs to a use case of this project that measures the environmental and climate impact of Measure 11—Organic agriculture—from the 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme of the Andalusian olive sector. As part of this study, a survey campaign was conducted, which collected data from 189 organic olive farmers in Andalusia. The data were analysed in order to characterise organic olive farmers and their farms. This paper presents the resulting characterisation, covering some information gaps detected as part of the AGRICORE project, such as their acceptance of M11 and willingness to innovate and take risks. The results highlight that most of the respondents are unaware of important aspects, such as exploitation costs and their belonging to environmentally protected areas. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that most farmers are approximately 60 years old, and more than 35% are women. Furthermore, most of those studied do not intend to return to conventional production methods. These results help to provide a current perspective of the organic olive sector in Andalusia, which can be used by policymakers to design improved policies that entail an increase in organic olive production. This paper describes the operations carried out to generate a georeferenced heritage inventory at a supra-municipal scale. The tool establishes links between its heritage elements based on the features and characteristics of the territory. The work has been carried out on the fluvial zone of the Lower Guadalquivir, an area of approximately 8500 km2 located in Andalusia in the south of Spain. The method used is based on the digital inventory of the Andalusian immovable historical heritage generated by the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage, in which more than 500 heritage assets in the study area are indexed. The work begins with the expansion and processing of these assets with the aim of reorganizing them and establishing new parameters in their classification schemes. Subsequently, a spatial analysis developed in a GIS environment detects relationships between heritage assets determined by the physical characteristics of the territory. These relationships are contrasted by historical research, and eight heritage networks in the territory are defined as a result. Finally, one of the networks is used to show how, from the graph theory, it is possible to investigate the detected links. This paper investigates the relationship between rainfall, groundwater and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data to generate regional-scale estimates of terrestrial water storage variations in the Andalucía region of southern Spain. These estimates can provide information on groundwater depletion (caused by periods of low rainfall or droughts) and groundwater recovery. The spatial distribution of groundwater bodies in southern Spain is complex and current in situ groundwater monitoring methods are deficient, particularly in terms of obtaining representative samples and in implementing and maintaining groundwater monitoring networks. The alternative approach proposed here is to investigate the relationship between precipitation time series and changes in the terrestrial water storage estimated from GRACE observations. The results were validated against the estimated fluctuation in regional groundwater. The maximum correlation between the mean groundwater level and the GRACE observations is 0.69 and this occurs at a lag of one month because the variation in gravity is immediate, but rainfall water requires around one month to travel across the vadose zone before it reaches the groundwater table. Using graphical methods of accumulated deviations from the mean, we show that, in general, groundwater storage follows the smooth, multi-year trends of terrestrial water storage but with less short-term trends; the same is true of rainfall, for which the local trends are more pronounced. There is hysteresis-like behaviour in the variations in terrestrial water storage and in the variations of groundwater. In practical terms, this study shows that, despite the abnormal dryness of the Iberian Peninsula during the 2004–2010 drought, the depleted groundwater storage in Andalucía recovered almost to its pre-drought level by 2016. In this paper, we have focused on the Self-Determination Theory, paying special attention to intrinsic motivation, which is understood as the motivation that leads the subject to perform a task without the expectation of obtaining an external reward. In the field of sport, motivation is one of the most studied variables and one of the most researched, since it is closely related to the reasons that lead the athletes to start, maintain, and abandon sports practice. The main objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between intrinsic motivation (IM) and emotional intelligence from the theoretical contributions of the Self-Determination Theory. The specific objectives are to analyze attention, clarity, and emotional regulation, as well as intrinsic motivation to acquire knowledge. Additionally, we aim to explore the relationship between attention, clarity, and emotional regulation and the intrinsic motivation to achieve something. Lastly, we investigate the correspondence between attention, clarity, and emotional regulation and the intrinsic motivation to experience stimuli. The sample consists of 163 undergraduate and master's students related to Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, studying at a Spanish public university, located in the southeast region of Andalusia—specifically, in the city of Almería. The participants had a mean age of 20.33 years. In terms of gender, 70.9% (n = 117) were men and 27.9% (n = 46) women. In terms of degree, 76.7% (n = 147) were undergraduate students and 23.3% (n = 18) were postgraduate students. The Sports Motivation Scale (SMS/EMD) was used to assess intrinsic motivation, and the TMMS-24 was used to assess emotional intelligence. The main findings of this research demonstrate the existence of a relationship between the three dimensions of emotional intelligence (emotional attention, emotional clarity, and emotional regulation) and intrinsic motivation (intrinsic motivation to know something, intrinsic motivation to achieve something, and intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation). Natural disasters, especially those related to water—like storms and floods—have increased over the last decades both in number and intensity. Under the current Climate Change framework, several reports predict an increase in the intensity and duration of these extreme climatic events, where the Mediterranean area would be one of the most affected. This paper develops a decision support system based on Bayesian inference able to predict a flood alert in Andalusian Mediterranean catchments. The key point is that, using simple weather forecasts and live measurements of river level, we can get a flood-alert several hours before it happens. A set of models based on Bayesian networks was learnt for each of the catchments included in the study area, and joined together into a more complex model based on a rule system. This final meta-model was validated using data from both non-extreme and extreme storm events. Results show that the methodology proposed provides an accurate forecast of the flood situation of the greatest catchment areas of Andalusia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the methodology used for the data collection and calculation of erosion rates and presents the recent results for the period 2001-2019 for all the beaches of the Andalusian shoreline. This period is divided into two subperiods (2001-2011 and 2001-2019) to detect possible trend changes during the study years. The proxy corresponding to the internal limit of the backshore has been used, which is very useful for medium to long-term coastal erosion rates. The results show the rates calculated for this proxy, which reveal a high presence of artificially stabilised sectors where the inward migration of the shoreline associated with it is hindered, together with an intensification of the retreat rates in natural sections. Similarly, there is a clear differentiation between a relatively dynamic Atlantic façade with a higher percentage of erosive sectors and a Mediterranean façade highly conditioned by anthropic presence, with a lower percentage but a higher intensity in their values. Dinophysis spp. can produce diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DST) including okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins, and some strains can also produce non-diarrheic pectenotoxins. Although DSTs are of human health concern and have motivated environmental monitoring programs in many locations, these monitoring programs often have temporal data gaps (e.g., days without measurements). This paper presents a model for the historical time-series, on a daily basis, of DST-producing toxigenic Dinophysis in 8 monitored locations in western Andalucía over 2015–2020, incorporating measurements of algae counts and DST levels. We fitted a bivariate hidden Markov Model (HMM) incorporating an autoregressive correlation among the observed DST measurements to account for environmental persistence of DST. We then reconstruct the maximum-likelihood profile of algae presence in the water column at daily intervals using the Viterbi algorithm. Using historical monitoring data from Andalucía, the model estimated that potentially toxigenic Dinophysis algae is present at greater than or equal to 250 cells/L between< 1% and>10% of the year depending on the site and year. The historical time-series reconstruction enabled by this method may facilitate future investigations into temporal dynamics of toxigenic Dinophysis blooms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Are we able to determine the existence value output generated for society through the preservation of wild species threatened with extinction? In this article we defend the theory that the service of preserving threatened species with risk of extinction is an existence value output with a hidden transaction price if it can be established that there are consumer or state willingness to pay an additional tax above the government total cost to avoid an increase in one threatened species in relation to the number recorded at the opening of the accounting period. This output is estimated by adding the total cost and the additional consumer tax which the consumers state that they are willing to pay through a choice experiment survey. Our refined monetary System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (rSEEA) extends the existence value output concept and valuation principles recommended by the United Nations. In this paper, this rSEEA was applied to Pinus pinea forests in protected as well as non-protected areas of Andalusia, Spain in 2010. The results show that the net value added from protected areas is 40% higher than that from non-protected areas. It is incidental that the environmental benefits in both areas coincide. Every year, wildfires accentuated by global warming, cause economic and ecological losses, and often, human casualties. Increasing operational capacity of firefighter crews is of utmost importance to better face the forest fire period that yearly occurs. In this study, we investigate the real-world firefighters timetabling problem of the INFOCA institution, Andalusia (Spain). The main issue is to achieve maximum operational capability while taking into account work regulation constraints. This paper proposes an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation that makes it feasible to solve small/medium instances to optimality. We put forward a matheuristic (ILPH) based on the ILP formulation, and we obtain solutions for larger instances. We propose an Adaptive Large Neighbourhood Search metaheuristic (ALNS) to obtain better results for larger instances and we use a version of the ILPH as one of the constructive methods. The ALNS obtains all the optimal solutions found by the ILP on small instances. It yields better solutions than the ILPH matheuristic on larger instances within shorter processing times. • GNSS-PWV time series are computed using 44 GNSS stations in Andalucía and ERA5 temperature and pressure data. • GNSS-PWV and ERA5-PWV are used to compute SPCI time series. • The SPCI generally shows high correlation with the SPEI, with better results for ERA5-SPCI than GNSS-SPCI. • The SPCI outperforms SPI for a limited geographical region and 24-month timescale. In this paper the Standardized Precipitation Conversion Index (SPCI), a PWV-based drought index, has been computed using GNSS and ERA5 PWV and its performance has been tested with respect to the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in Southern Spain. One of the climatic features of this area is the low correlation level between PWV and precipitation, in contrast with other areas in which SPCI has been previously tested. The GNSS-SPCI has been derived from validated ZTD time series estimated from local GNSS permanent stations' data. All the needed meteorological values were derived from ERA5, excepting precipitation values and SPEI-SPI values which were extracted from a national high-resolution dataset. The resulting SPCI time series have shown high correlation coefficients with respect to the SPEI. The use of longer SPCI time series allowed by ERA5 model has provided the most coherent results, suggesting that the ERA5-PWV data can be interesting to overcome problems caused by the short timespan of GNSS time series in SPCI computation. In general, high correlation coefficients have been obtained compared to global results from previous studies. This shows that, even for regions with low correlation levels between PWV and precipitation, the SPCI can have an interesting potential for drought monitoring. The SPCI was found to perform better on higher timescales (12 and 24 months). The performance of SPCI has also been compared that of the SPI: SPCI is able to outperform SPI for the 24-month timescale for a limited geographical region. This paper presents a mathematical/Artificial Intelligence (AI) model for the prediction of price outcomes in markets with the presence of lobbying, whose outputs are pricing trends that aggregate the opinions of lobbies on future prices. Our proposal succeeds in unraveling this complex real-world problem by reducing the solution to straightforward probability computations. We tested our method on real olive oil prices (Andalusia, Spain) with encouraging results in a challenging sector, where opacity in the entry of oil shipments which are stored while waiting for the price to rise, makes it very difficult to forecast the prices. Specifically, understanding by minimum price that the price level is at least reached, specific formulas for computing the likelihood of both the aggregate and the minimum market price are provided. These formulas are based on the price levels that lobbies expect which in turn, can be calculated using the probability that each lobby gives to market prices. An innovative quantitative study of the lobbies is also carried out by explicitly computing the weight of each lobby in the process thus solving a problem for which there were only qualitative references up until now. The structural model is based on Time Dynamic Markov random fields (TD-MRFs). This model requires significantly less information to produce an output and enjoys transparency during the process when compared with other approaches, such as neural networks (known as black boxes). The aim of this paper is to assess the level of success achieved by entrepreneurs. The concept of success has many subjective facets, and it needs to be evaluated to reach other higher objectives, such as improving support systems for entrepreneurs. The usual pre-existing focuses for the evaluation of business performance are analysed and adapted. Based on a real case, the most relevant variables for detecting success are studied and an algorithmic process (based on decision trees) is established to ascertain whether an entrepreneur has achieved success. The data refers to entrepreneurs from Andalusia, the European region with the highest unemployment rates and where support for entrepreneurship is on the agenda of all political parties. The model specifies a minimal set of variables to evaluate success in each case. Subsequently, a simple set of 29 questions is also offered, serving to classify most entrepreneurs (over 98% of 2221 individuals in the case analysed) by their level of success. An objective procedure to measure the success of entrepreneurs is given. Such method is based on artificial intelligence and on three focuses: positioning, expectations and evolution. This paper considers the game aspect of the courtship rituals during holding the traditional spring and autumn holidays in Spain. The nature of the calendar holidays during this period had the link with the ancient rituals of fertility, that was considered in the classical paper of J. Frezer. The sense content of the May tree holiday was emphasized by the choice of the most beautiful girl and boy of the country. Swings were an important element of the party. Due to the interference of the court and folk cultures it took the image of the gallant courtship of the girl, the semantics of which were rethought, the sacral content of which was replaced by the game one. In this game the gender stereotypes were transmitted to the society. The installation of swings eventually spread over the whole country. Over the centuries this tradition was held in all the regions of Spain, though due to the second demographical transition it gradually lost its significance. The author comes to a conclusion that the vanishing of this ritual from the autochtonous culture was determined by the social processes, migrations and urbanization. The change of value dominants and ideological markers leads to the vanishing of the basic semantics of this ritual and the very party. Nowadays the relic of this tradition is kept in some villages and is recognized as a part of non-material heritage of Andalusia. In the last few decades, multidisciplinary research on calcareous tufas as palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic records has intensively grown, which has provided an increasing number of well-documented sites. Consequently, inter-site comparisons and regional- to continental-scale reviews have developed, discussing the link between tufa distribution and climate or providing diachronic comparisons of climatic and environmental conditions prevailing during Quaternary interglacials (and interstadials). This paper proposes such a review for the southeastern Mediterranean area, including new dating and isotopic data from Aït Said ou Idder (northern Morocco) to be compared with available regional data, in order to discuss the intensity of some humid periods of the last 125 kyr. According to several radiocarbon and U–Th dates, three chronological phases are indeed identified at Aït Said ou Idder: the Holocene, the Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) interstadial 8 and the Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 5e. Similarly, other tufa deposits from both Morocco and southern Spain (mostly Andalusia) appear to have preferentially developed during interglacial or interstadial periods, marked by maximal developments of the Mediterranean forest as reported in the palynological records from regional marine cores. Furthermore, isotopic data (δ18O and δ13C) from Aït Said ou Idder (and from other southeastern Mediterranean tufa deposits where available) suggest no significant difference in terms of temperature or air mass circulation between the Holocene, D–O 8 and MIS 5e. In terms of humidity conditions, no evidence of strong aridity is recorded even if D–O 8 appears drier than both interglacials. Conditions seems slightly wetter during the Holocene than during MIS 5e, but δ13C values at Aït Said ou Idder could also reflect strong differences in the seasonality of these interglacials. We demonstrate that calcareous tufa deposits have promising potential for discussing, in both space and time, the climate variability in the southeastern Mediterranean area, but new investigations, including dating and stable isotopes, are required to accurately feed such discussions. Kurzfassung: In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist die multidisziplinäre Forschung zur Rolle von Kalktuffen (Tufa) als Paläoumwelt- und Paläoklima-Archiv intensiv ausgebaut worden, wodurch nun eine weiterhin wachsende Zahl gut dokumentierter Standorte vorliegt. Infolgedessen war es im Rahmen von Vergleichen zwischen verschiedenen Standorten und auf der Grundlage vergleichender Bewertungen auf regionalem bis hin zu kontinentalem Maßstab einerseits möglich, den Zusammenhang zwischen der Verteilung von Kalktuffen und Klima zu diskutieren, sowie andererseits diachrone Vergleiche von klimatischen Bedingungen und Umweltbedingungen während der Interglaziale (und Interstadiale) im Quartär durchzuführen. Diese Studie stellt eine solche vergleichende Bewertung für den südöstlichen Mittelmeerraum bereit und präsentiert darüber hinaus neue Datierungen und Isotopen-Daten aus Aït Said ou Idder (nördliches Marokko), die mit vorliegenden regionalen Daten verglichen werden, um somit eine Einschätzung der Intensität ausgewählter humider Abschnitte der letzten 125 kyr vornehmen zu können. Basierend auf mehreren Radiokohlenstoff- und U–Th-Datierungen können in Aït Said ou Idder drei chronologische Phasen ausgewiesen werden: das Holozän, das Dansgaard/Oeschger Interstadial 8 und das MIS 5e. In ähnlicher Weise scheinen sich andere Kalktuffablagerungen sowohl aus Marokko als auch aus Südspanien (hauptsächlich Andalusien) bevorzugt während solcher Interglazial- oder Interstadialperioden entwickelt zu haben, die basierend auf der palynologischen Auswertung regionaler mariner Bohrkernarchive durch eine maximale Entwicklung mediterraner Wälder gekennzeichnet sind. Darüber hinaus deuten Isotopendaten (δ18 O and δ13C) aus Aït Said ou Idder (und aus anderen Kalktuffen des südöstlichen Mittelmeerraumes, sofern verfügbar) darauf hin, dass es keine signifikanten Unterschiede in Bezug auf Temperatur oder Luftmassenzirkulation zwischen dem Holozän, dem D/O 8 und dem MIS 5e gab. Im Hinblick auf die Feuchtigkeitsbedingungen finden sich keine Hinweise starker Aridität, auch wenn das D/O 8 relativ trockener erscheint als beide Interglaziale. Die Bedingungen scheinen während des Holozäns etwas feuchter gewesen zu sein als während des MIS 5e, aber die δ13C -Werte in Aït Said ou Idder könnten auch starke Unterschiede in der Saisonalität dieser Interglaziale widerspiegeln. The hydraulic press was patented by Bramah in 1795. Initially, it was used for keeping paper flat or pressing maps, but in 1833, in Montilla (Córdoba, Spain), the machine was properly adapted by Diego de Alvear to produce olive oil. It was an extraordinary technological advance in the olive oil sector, not only in Spain but also in other countries of the Mediterranean Basin, because it made possible to produce better olive oil in less time. The aim of this article is to analyse the importance of the invention of the hydraulic press for the olive oil industry; the influence it had on the configuration of the olive grove landscape and its heritage value as an example of the evolution of Andalusian society.
