The issue includes 21 papers covering a range of subjects, including molecular trees, network systems, variational inequality problems, scheduling, image restoration, spectral clustering, integral equations, convex functions, graph products, optimization algorithms, air quality prediction, humanitarian planning, inertial methods, neural networks, transportation problems, emotion identification, fixed-point problems, structural engineering design, single machine scheduling, and ensemble learning. The papers present new theoretical results, algorithms, and applications in these areas. The efficiency and the effectiveness of a machine learning (ML) model are greatly influenced by feature selection (FS), a crucial preprocessing step in machine learning that seeks out the ideal set of characteristics with the maximum accuracy possible. Due to their dominance over traditional optimization techniques, researchers are concentrating on a variety of metaheuristic (or evolutionary) algorithms and trying to suggest cutting-edge hybrid techniques to handle FS issues. The use of hybrid metaheuristic approaches for FS has thus been the subject of numerous research works. The purpose of this paper is to critically assess the existing hybrid FS approaches and to give a thorough literature review on the hybridization of different metaheuristic/evolutionary strategies that have been employed for supporting FS. This article reviews pertinent documents on hybrid frameworks that were published in the period from 2009 to 2022 and offers a thorough analysis of the used techniques, classifiers, datasets, applications, assessment metrics, and schemes of hybridization. Recent advancements in computer science include some optimization models that have been developed and used in real applications. Some metaheuristic search/optimization algorithms have been tested to obtain optimal solutions to speed controller applications in self-driving cars. Some metaheuristic algorithms are based on social behaviour, resulting in several search models, functions, and parameters, and thus algorithm-specific strengths and weaknesses. The present paper proposes a fitness function on the basis of the mathematical description of proportional integrative derivate controllers showing that mean square error is not always the best measure when looking for a solution to the problem. The fitness developed in this paper contains features and equations from the mathematical background of proportional integrative derivative controllers to calculate the best performance of the system. Such results are applied to quantitatively evaluate the performance of twenty-one optimization algorithms. Furthermore, improved versions of the fitness function are considered, in order to investigate which aspects are enhanced by applying the optimization algorithms. Results show that the right fitness function is a key point to get a good performance, regardless of the chosen algorithm. The aim of this paper is to present a novel objective function to carry out optimizations of the gains of a PID controller, using several computational intelligence techniques to perform the optimizations. One of the useful knowledge representation tools, which can describe the joint probability distribution between some random variables with a graphical model and can be trained by a dataset, is the Bayesian network (BN). A BN is composed of a network structure and a conditional probability distribution table for each node. Discovering an optimal BN structure is an NP‐hard optimization problem that various meta‐heuristic algorithms are applied to solve this problem by researchers. The genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, evolutionary programming, artificial bee colony, and bacterial foraging optimization are some of the meta‐heuristic methods to solve this problem using a dataset. Most of these methods are applying a scoring metric to generate the best network structure from a set of candidates. A Fixed Structure Learning Automata‐Based (FSLA‐B) algorithm is presented in this paper to solve the structure learning problem of BNs. There is a fixed structure learning automaton for each pair of vertices in the BN's graph structure in the proposed algorithm. The action of this automaton determines the presence and direction of an edge between the vertices. The proposed algorithm performs a guided search procedure using the FSLA and escapes from local optimums. Several datasets are utilised in this paper to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. By performing various experiments, multiple meta‐heuristic algorithms are compared with the introduced new one. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently been increasingly popular in various areas, fields, and applications. Military, disaster management, rescue operations, public services, agriculture, and various other areas are examples. As a result, UAV path planning is concerned with determining the optimal path from the source to the destination while avoiding collisions with lowering the cost of time, energy, and other resources. This review aims to assort academic studies on the path planning optimization in UAV using meta-heuristic algorithms, summarize the results of each optimization algorithm, and extend the understanding of the current state of the path planning in UAV in the meta-heuristic optimization field. For this purpose, we implemented a broad, automated search using Boolean and snowballing searching methods to find academic works on path planning in UAVs. Studies and papers have been distinguished, and the following information was obtained and aggregated from each article: authors, publication's year, the journal name or the conference name, proposed algorithms, the aim of the study, the outcome, and the quality of each study. According to the findings, the meta-heuristic algorithm is a standard optimization method for tackling single and multi-objective problems. Besides, the findings show that meta-heuristic algorithms have a great compact on the path planning optimization in UAVs, and there is good progress in this field. Unconstrained continuous large-scale global optimization (LSGO) is still a challenging task for a wide range of modern metaheuristic approaches. A cooperative coevolution approach is a good tool for increasing the performance of an evolutionary algorithm in solving high-dimensional optimization problems. However, the performance of cooperative coevolution approaches for LSGO depends significantly on the problem decomposition, namely, on the number of subcomponents and on how variables are grouped in these subcomponents. Also, the choice of the population size is still an open question for population-based algorithms. This paper discusses a method for selecting the number of subcomponents and the population size during the optimization process ("on fly") from a predefined pool of parameters. The selection of the parameters is based on their performance in the previous optimization steps. The main goal of the study is the improvement of coevolutionary decomposition-based algorithms for solving LSGO problems. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adapt evolutionary algorithm for solving continuous LSGO problems. We have tested this algorithm on 15 optimization problems from the IEEE LSGO CEC'2013 benchmark suite. The pursuit of achieving total power network observability in smart grids using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) carries a significant promise of real-time Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control (WAMPAC). PMU applications eliminate periodical measurements, thereby increasing accuracy through a high sampling rate of the measured power systems quantities. The high costs of installation of PMUs for total power system observability presents a challenge in the implementation of PMUs. This is due to the expensive costs of PMU devices. This has led to a prominent optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem that researchers tirelessly aim to solve by ensuring a complete power network observability while using the least installed PMU devices possible. In this paper, a novel Binary Firefly Algorithm (BFA) based on the node degree centrality scores of each bus is proposed to minimize PMU installations. The BFA solves the OPP problem in consideration of the effect of Zero Injection Buses (ZIBs) under normal operation and single PMU outage (SPO). The robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE-approved test systems and visualized with a force-directed technique on an undirected power network graph. The proposed BFA yields the same but better optimal PMU numbers, obtained by existing meta-heuristic optimization techniques found in the literature for each of the IEEE test cases, as well as highlighting the cost–benefit of having a robust system against single PMU loss while considering the ZIB effect for an improved system measurement availability. Golden jackal optimization (GJO) is an effective metaheuristic algorithm that imitates the cooperative hunting behavior of the golden jackal. However, since the update of the prey's position often depends on the male golden jackal and there is insufficient diversity of golden jackals in some cases, it is prone to falling into a local optimal optimum. In order to address these drawbacks of GJO, this paper proposes an improved algorithm, called a hybrid GJO and golden sine (S) algorithm (Gold-SA) with dynamic lens-imaging (L) learning (LSGJO). First, this paper proposes novel dual golden spiral update rules inspired by Gold-SA. These rules give GJO the ability to think like a human (Gold-SA), making the golden jackal more intelligent in the process of preying, and improving the ability and efficiency of optimization. Second, a novel nonlinear dynamic decreasing scaling factor is introduced into the lens-imaging learning operator to maintain the population diversity. The performance of LSGJO is verified through 23 classical benchmark functions and 3 complex design problems in real scenarios. The experimental results show that LSGJO converges faster and more accurately than 11 state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, the global and local search ability has improved significantly, and the proposed algorithm has shown superior performance in solving constrained problems. Accurate and effective wind power prediction plays an important role in wind power generation, distribution, and management. Inthis paper, a hybrid algorithm based on gradient descent and meta-heuristic optimization is designed to improve the accuracy of prediction and reduce the computational burden. The hybrid algorithm includes three steps: in the first step, we use the gradient descent algorithm to get the initial parameters. Secondly, we input the initial parameters into the meta-heuristic optimization algorithm to search for the "best parameters" (high-quality inferior solutions). Finally, we input optimized parameters into the RMSProp optimization algorithm and conduct gradient descent again to find a better solution. We used 2021 wind power data from Guangxi, China for the experiment. In this paper, a new Modified Meta-Heuristic algorithm is proposed. This method contains some modifications to improve the performance of the simulated-annealing algorithm (SA). Most authors who deal with improving the SA algorithm presented some improvements and modifications to one or more of the five standard features of the SA algorithm. In this paper, we improve the SA algorithm by presenting some suggestions and modifications to all five standard features of the SA algorithm. Through these suggestions and modifications, we obtained a new algorithm that finds the approximate solution to the global minimum of a non-convex function. The new algorithm contains novel parameters, which are updated at each iteration. Therefore, the variety and alternatives in choosing these parameters demonstrated a noticeable impact on the performance of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, it has multiple formulas by which the candidate solutions are generated. Diversity in these formulas helped the proposed algorithm to escape a local point while finding the global minimizer of a non-convex function. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is reported through extensive numerical experiments on some well-known test problems. The performance profiles are used to evaluate and compare the performance of our proposed algorithm against the other five meta-heuristic algorithms. The comparison results between the performance of our suggested algorithm and the other five algorithms indicate that the proposed algorithm is competitive with, and in all cases superior to, the five algorithms in terms of the efficiency, reliability, and effectiveness for finding the global minimizers of non-convex functions. The optimization of industrial processes is a critical task for leveraging profitability and sustainability. To ensure the selection of optimum process parameter levels in any industrial process, numerous metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed so far. However, many algorithms are either computationally too expensive or become trapped in the pit of local optima. To counter these challenges, in this paper, a hybrid metaheuristic called PSO-GSA is employed that works by combining the iterative improvement capability of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). A binary PSO is also fused with GSA to develop a BPSO-GSA algorithm. Both the hybrid algorithms i.e., PSO-GSA and BPSO-GSA, are compared against traditional algorithms, such as tabu search (TS), genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE), GSA and PSO algorithms. Moreover, another popular hybrid algorithm DE-GA is also used for comparison. Since earlier works have already studied the performance of these algorithms on mathematical benchmark functions, in this paper, two real-world-applicable independent case studies on biodiesel production are considered. Based on the extensive comparisons, significantly better solutions are observed in the PSO-GSA algorithm as compared to the traditional algorithms. Many important problems in engineering management can be formulated as Resource Assignment Problem (RAP). The Workers Assignment Problem (WAP) is considered as a sub-class of RAP which aims to find an optimal assignment of workers to a number of tasks in order to optimize certain objectives. WAP is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Due to its importance, several algorithms have been developed to solve it. In this paper, it is considered that a manager is required to provide a training course to his workers in order to improve their level of skill or experience to have a sustainable competitive advantage in the industry. The training cost of each worker to perform a particular job is different. The WAP is to find the best assignment of workers to training courses such that the total training cost is minimized. Two metaheuristic optimizations named Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) are utilized to final the optimal solution that reduces the total cost. MATLAB Software is used to perform the simulation of the two proposed methods into WAP. In this paper, the behavior and performance of Pure Random Orthogonal Search (PROS), a parameter-free evolutionary algorithm (EA) that outperforms many existing EAs on the well-known benchmark functions with finite-time budget, are analyzed. The sufficient conditions to converge to the global optimum are also determined. In addition, we propose two modifications to PROS, namely Triangular-Distributed Random Orthogonal Search (TROS) and Quadratic-Distributed Random Orthogonal Search (QROS). With our local search mechanism, both modified algorithms improve the convergence rates and the errors of the obtained solutions significantly on the benchmark functions while preserving the advantages of PROS: parameterless, excellent computational efficiency, ease of applying to all kinds of applications, and high performance with finite-time search budget. Meta-heuristic algorithms are widely used in complex problems that cannot be solved by traditional computing methods due to their powerful optimization capabilities. However, for high-complexity problems, the fitness function evaluation may take hours or even days to complete. The surrogate-assisted meta-heuristic algorithm effectively solves this kind of long solution time for the fitness function. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient surrogate-assisted hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm by combining the surrogate-assisted model with gannet optimization algorithm (GOA) and the differential evolution (DE) algorithm, abbreviated as SAGD. We explicitly propose a new add-point strategy based on information from historical surrogate models, using information from historical surrogate models to allow the selection of better candidates for the evaluation of true fitness values and the local radial basis function (RBF) surrogate to model the landscape of the objective function. The control strategy selects two efficient meta-heuristic algorithms to predict the training model samples and perform updates. A generation-based optimal restart strategy is also incorporated in SAGD to select suitable samples to restart the meta-heuristic algorithm. We tested the SAGD algorithm using seven commonly used benchmark functions and the wireless sensor network (WSN) coverage problem. The optimization problems are becoming more complicated, requiring new and efficient optimization techniques to solve them. Many bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms have emerged in the last decade to solve these complex problems as most of these algorithms may be trapped into local optima and could not effectively solve all types of optimization problems. Hence, researchers are still trying to develop new and better optimization algorithms. This paper introduces a novel biologically-based optimization algorithm called circulatory system-based optimization (CSBO). CSBO is modeled based on the function of the body's blood vessels with two distinctive circuits, i.e. pulmonary and systemic circuits. The proposed CSBO algorithm is tested on a wide variety of complex functions of the real world and validated with the standard meta-heuristic algorithms. Since the increases in electricity demand, environmental awareness, and power reliability requirements, solutions of single-objective optimal power flow (OPF) and multi-objective OPF (MOOPF) (two or three objectives) problems are inadequate for modern power system management and operation. Solutions to the many-objective OPF (more than three objectives) problems are necessary to meet modern power-system requirements, and an efficient optimization algorithm is needed to solve the problems. This paper presents a many-objective marine predators algorithm (MaMPA) for solving single-objective OPF (SOOPF), multi-objective OPF (MOOPF), and many-objective OPF (MaOPF) problems as this algorithm has been widely used to solve other different problems with many successes, except for MaOPF problems. The marine predators algorithm (MPA) itself cannot solve multi- or many-objective optimization problems, so the non-dominated sorting, crowding mechanism, and leader mechanism are applied to the MPA in this work. The considered objective functions include cost, emission, transmission loss, and voltage stability index (VSI), and the IEEE 30- and 118-bus systems are tested to evaluate the algorithm performance. The results of the SOOPF problem provided by MaMPA are found to be better than various algorithms in the literature where the provided cost of MaMPA is more than that of the compared algorithms for more than 1000 USD/h in the IEEE 118-bus system. The statistical results of MaMPA are investigated and express very high consistency with a very low standard deviation. The Pareto fronts and best-compromised solutions generated by MaMPA for MOOPF and MaOPF problems are compared with various algorithms based on the hypervolume indicator and show superiority over the compared algorithms, especially in the large system. The best-compromised solution of MaMPA for the MaOPF problem is found to be greater than the compared algorithms around 4.30 to 85.23% for the considered objectives in the IEEE 118-bus system. In this paper, a new stochastic optimization algorithm is introduced, called Driving Training-Based Optimization (DTBO), which mimics the human activity of driving training. The fundamental inspiration behind the DTBO design is the learning process to drive in the driving school and the training of the driving instructor. DTBO is mathematically modeled in three phases: (1) training by the driving instructor, (2) patterning of students from instructor skills, and (3) practice. The performance of DTBO in optimization is evaluated on a set of 53 standard objective functions of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, and IEEE CEC2017 test functions types. The optimization results show that DTBO has been able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems by maintaining a proper balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance quality of DTBO is compared with the results of 11 well-known algorithms. A novel optimization algorithm called hybrid salp swarm algorithm with teaching-learning based optimization (HSSATLBO) is proposed in this paper to solve reliability redundancy allocation problems (RRAP) with nonlinear resource constraints. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is one of the newest meta-heuristic algorithms which mimic the swarming behaviour of salps. It is an efficient swarm optimization technique that has been used to solve various kinds of complex optimization problems. However, SSA suffers a slow convergence rate due to its poor exploitation ability. In view of this inadequacy and resulting in a better balance between exploration and exploitation, the proposed hybrid method HSSATLBO has been developed where the searching procedures of SSA are renovated based on the TLBO algorithm. The good global search ability of SSA and fast convergence of TLBO help to maximize the system reliability through the choices of redundancy and component reliability. The performance of the proposed HSSATLBO algorithm has been demonstrated by seven well-known benchmark problems related to reliability optimization that includes series system, complex (bridge) system, series-parallel system, overspeed protection system, convex system, mixed series-parallel system, and large-scale system with dimensions 36, 38, 40, 42 and 50. After illustration, the outcomes of the proposed HSSATLBO are compared with several recently developed competitive meta-heuristic algorithms and also with three improved variants of SSA. Additionally, the HSSATLBO results are statistically investigated with the wilcoxon sign-rank test and multiple comparison test to show the significance of the results. Four-bar linkages are one of the most widely used mechanisms in industries. This paper presents a comparative study on the accuracy and efficiency of the optimum synthesis of path-generating four-bar linkages using five metaheuristic optimization algorithms. The utilized metaheuristic methods included two swarm intelligence-based algorithms, i.e., particle swarm optimization and hybrid particle swarm optimization, and three evolutionary-based algorithms, i.e., differential evolution, ensemble of parameters and mutation strategies in differential evolution, and linearly ensemble of parameters and mutation strategies in differential evolution. The objective function to be minimized is the sum of squares of the distance between the generated points and the precision points of a coupler point. The optimal design of four-bar linkages must meet the Grashof's criteria and exhibit sequential constraints that can prevent the occurrence of order defect. This study investigated five representative cases of the dimensional synthesis of four-bar path generators with and without prescribed timing and compared the optimal solutions of the utilized five metaheuristic methods to those of previously reported algorithms in literature. The improved metaheuristic methods exhibited superior optimal solution and enhanced reliability compared to the original methods. Moreover, three improved metaheuristic methods were not only easy implemented, but also more efficient for solving the optimal synthesis problems, particularly for high dimensional problems. Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions are created by blocking the direct path between the transmitter and receiver, resulting in an increased signal propagation path. To mitigate the Time of Arrival (TOA) measured errors caused by the NLOS phenomenon in cellular radio positioning, we use the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation method in this work. The cost function of the ML estimator is usually a high-dimensional, nonlinear, and multimodal function, where standard deterministic optimization techniques cannot solve such problems in real-time and without significant computing resources. In this paper, effective metaheuristic algorithms based on the enhanced variants of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are applied for the optimal solution of the ML problem and efficiently determine the mobile station location. Time-Varying Acceleration Coefficients (TVAC) are introduced into the standard PSO algorithm to enhance the global search and convergence properties. The resulting algorithm is known as PSO-TVAC. To further improve the performance of the metaheuristic optimization, we suggest adding Chaos Search (CS), Opposition-Based Learning (OBL), and TVAC strategy to the PSO process. The simulation results show that the proposed metaheuristic algorithm named the Chaotic Opposition-based PSO-TVAC (COPSO-TVAC) can reach the Generalized Cramer–Rao Lower Bound (GCRLB) and surpass the original PSO, PSO-TVAC, and the presented conventional optimization algorithms. The arithmetic optimization algorithm is a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm. In this paper, an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm (IAOA) based on the population control strategy is introduced to solve numerical optimization problems. By classifying the population and adaptively controlling the number of individuals in the subpopulation, the information of each individual can be used effectively, which speeds up the algorithm to find the optimal value, avoids falling into local optimum, and improves the accuracy of the solution. The performance of the proposed IAOA algorithm is evaluated on six systems of nonlinear equations, ten integrations, and engineering problems. The PID control algorithm for balancing robot attitude control suffers from the problem of difficult parameter tuning. Previous studies have proposed using metaheuristic algorithms to tune the PID parameters. However, traditional metaheuristic algorithms are subject to the criticism of premature convergence and the possibility of falling into local optimum solutions. Therefore, the present paper proposes a CFHBA-PID algorithm for balancing robot Dual-loop PID attitude control based on Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) and CF-ITAE. On the one hand, HBA maintains a sufficiently large population diversity throughout the search process and employs a dynamic search strategy for balanced exploration and exploitation, effectively avoiding the problems of classical intelligent optimization algorithms and serving as a global search. On the other hand, a novel complementary factor (CF) is proposed to complement integrated time absolute error (ITAE) with the overshoot amount, resulting in a new rectification indicator CF-ITAE, which balances the overshoot amount and the response time during parameter tuning. Using balancing robot as the experimental object, HBA-PID is compared with AOA-PID, WOA-PID, and PSO-PID, and the results demonstrate that HBA-PID outperforms the other three algorithms in terms of overshoot amount, stabilization time, ITAE, and convergence speed, proving that the algorithm combining HBA with PID is better than the existing mainstream algorithms. The comparative experiments using CF prove that CFHBA-PID is able to effectively control the overshoot amount in attitude control. This paper presents a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the geometrical features of circles, called the circle search algorithm (CSA). The circle is the most well-known geometric object, with various features including diameter, center, perimeter, and tangent lines. The ratio between the radius and the tangent line segment is the orthogonal function of the angle opposite to the orthogonal radius. This angle plays an important role in the exploration and exploitation behavior of the CSA. To evaluate the robustness of the CSA in comparison to other algorithms, many independent experiments employing 23 famous functions and 3 real engineering problems were carried out. The statistical results revealed that the CSA succeeded in achieving the minimum fitness values for 21 out of the tested 23 functions, and the p-value was less than 0.05. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is a relatively new and straightforward swarm-based meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, which is inspired by the flocking behavior of salps when foraging and navigating in oceans. Although SSA is very competitive, it suffers from some limitations including unbalanced exploration and exploitation operation, slow convergence. Therefore, this study presents an improved version of SSA, called OOSSA, to enhance the comprehensive performance of the basic method. In preference, a new opposition-based learning strategy based on optical lens imaging principle is proposed, and combined with the orthogonal experimental design, an orthogonal lens opposition-based learning technique is designed to help the population jump out of a local optimum. Next, the scheme of adaptively adjusting the number of leaders is embraced to boost the global exploration capability and improve the convergence speed. Also, a dynamic learning strategy is applied to the canonical methodology to improve the exploitation capability. To confirm the efficacy of the proposed OOSSA, this paper uses 26 standard mathematical optimization functions with various features to test the method. Alongside, the performance of the proposed methodology is validated by Wilcoxon signed-rank and Friedman statistical tests. Additionally, three well-known engineering optimization problems and unknown parameters extraction issue of photovoltaic model are applied to check the ability of the OOSA algorithm to obtain solutions to intractable real-world problems. The experimental results reveal that the developed OOSSA is significantly superior to the standard SSA, currently popular SSA-based algorithms, and other state-of-the-artmeta-heuristic algorithms for solving numerical optimization, real-world engineering optimization, and photovoltaic model parameter extraction problems. Finally, an OOSSA-based path planning approach is developed for creating the shortest obstacle-free route for autonomous mobile robots. Crow search algorithm (CSA) is a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm based on the intelligent behavior of the crow population. Although the algorithm has the characteristics of few parameters, simple structure, and easy application, it has the shortcomings of low convergence accuracy and imbalance between exploration and exploitation capabilities. The occurrence of these issues is originated from crow learning from only one goal. In this paper, an improved crow search algorithm based on oppositional forgetting learning (OFLCSA) is proposed. In order to solve the shortcomings of CSA, the forgetting mechanism is introduced to help the algorithm jump out of the local optimum. Moreover, the opposition-based learning (OBL) strategy is combined with the forgetting mechanism to increase the probability of approaching the optimal solution. In addition, the elite crow and adaptive flight length are used to improve the convergence accuracy. To verify the performance of OFLCSA, experiments were conducted on the Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) 2014 and CEC 2019 benchmark functions. The complexity of forward kinematic modelling increases with the increase in the degrees of freedom for a manipulator. To reduce the computational weight and time lag for desired output transformation, this paper proposes a forward kinematic model mapped with the help of the Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) architecture tuned by a novel meta-heuristic algorithm, namely, the Cooperative Search Optimisation Algorithm (CSOA). The architecture presented is able to automatically learn the kinematic properties of the manipulator. Learning is accomplished iteratively based only on the observation of the input–output relationship. Related simulations are carried out on a 3-Degrees of Freedom (DOF) manipulator on the Robot Operating System (ROS). The dataset created from the simulation is divided 65–35 for training–testing of the proposed model. The metrics used for model validation include spread value, cost and runtime for the training dataset, and Mean Relative Error, Normal Mean Square Error, and Mean Absolute Error for the testing dataset. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is one of the efficient recent meta‐heuristic optimization algorithms, where it has been successfully utilized in a wide range of optimization problems in different fields. In the research process, it is found that it is very difficult to maintain the balance between the exploration and exploitation capabilities of a certain algorithm. Therefore, one of the main purposes of this article is to provide an algorithm that can intelligently balance between exploration and exploitation, so that it can balance exploration and exploitation capabilities. Later, in the research process, it was found that the sine and cosine function and the salp foraging trajectory have a high mathematical similarity, which greatly improves the optimization ability of the algorithm. Besides, maintaining a load balancing among resources would be difficult because the resources are usually distributed in a heterogeneous way. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm for mathematical description of the foraging behavior of whales. Cloud model (CM) is an effective model to describe cognitive uncertainty, at the same time, it can comprehensively describe the randomness and fuzziness in uncertain phenomena. Skew normal distribution (SND) can better describe the biological behavior situation when the environment changes. In this paper, a new skew normal cloud model (SNCM) is established in the first place by combining the CM with the SND and the skew normal membership function to describe the fuzziness and randomness of environmental change. The Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm is an efficient path-planning algorithm based on random sampling. The RRT* algorithm is a variant of the RRT algorithm that can achieve convergence to the optimal solution. However, it has been proven to take an infinite time to do so. An improved Quick-RRT* (Q-RRT*) algorithm based on a virtual light source is proposed in this paper to overcome this problem. The virtual light-based Q-RRT* (LQRRT*) takes advantage of the heuristic information generated by the virtual light on the map. In this way, the tree can find the initial solution quickly. Next, the LQRRT* algorithm combines the heuristic information with the optimization capability of the Q-RRT* algorithm to find the approximate optimal solution. LQRRT* further optimizes the sampling space compared with the Q-RRT* algorithm and improves the sampling efficiency. The efficiency of the algorithm is verified by comparison experiments in different simulation environments. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) provides a metaheuristic optimization technique for real-life functions with complex behavior. Inspired by the metaphor of social behavior as exhibited by swarms operating in natural surroundings, the algorithm captures the Emergent Complexity demonstrated by individual components of large groups which work together using simple rules and create complex, yet efficient, adaptive, and self-organizing systems. The paper seeks to rigorously analyze the hyperparameters of the algorithm to find the relative importance of cognitive(personal) vis-à-vis social (swarm) parameters of the algorithm so as to gain a perfect understanding of the importance of exploitation versus exploration parameters thus enabling us to enhance the application efficiency of the algorithm. The Sine-Cosine algorithm (SCA) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm utilizing sine and cosine functions to perform search. To enable the search process, SCA incorporates several search parameters. But sometimes, these parameters make the search in SCA vulnerable to local minima/maxima. To overcome this problem, a new Multi Sine-Cosine algorithm (MSCA) is proposed in this paper. MSCA utilizes multiple swarm clusters to diversify & intensify the search in-order to avoid the local minima/maxima problem. Secondly, during update MSCA also checks for better search clusters that offer convergence to global minima effectively. To assess its performance, we tested the MSCA on unimodal, multimodal and composite benchmark functions taken from the literature. This paper describes a methodology to design and optimize a controllable pitch propeller suitable for small leisure ship boats. A proper range for design parameters has to be set by the user. An optimization based on the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is carried out to minimize a fitness function representing the engine's fuel consumption. The OpenProp code has been integrated in the procedure to compute thrust and torque. Blade's geometry and tables about pitch, thrust and consumption are the main output of the optimization process. A case study has been included to show how the procedure can be implemented in the design process. A case study shows that the procedure allows a designer to sketch a controllable pitch propeller with optimal efficiency; computational times are compatible with the design conceptual phase where several scenarios must be investigated to set the most suitable for the following detailed design. Rule-based classification is one of the important tasks in data mining due to its wide applications, particularly in the domains that need to interpret the classification decision such as medical diagnosis. The rule-based classification is a combination of the classification and association rule mining fields which aims at building interpretable classifiers by means of classification rules. This paper presents a novel and efficient sequential covering strategy for Classification Rule Mining to improve the interpretability of classifiers using a Discrete Equilibrium Optimization Algorithm called DEOA-CRM. Our approach benefits from the advantages of associative classification and population-based intelligence. It is inspired by the recent meta-heuristic equilibrium optimization algorithm. New discrete operators defined enable our approach to avoid local solutions and find global ones, improving the exploration and exploitation power in the search space. The proposed DEOA-CRM is tested on a total of 12 test data sets of various sizes and benchmarked with four recent and well-known rule-based classification mining algorithms. K-anonymity is the most widely used approach to privacy preserving microdata which is mainly based on generalization. Although generalization-based k-anonymity approaches can achieve the privacy protection objective, they suffer from information loss. Clustering-based approaches have been successfully adapted for k-anonymization as they enhance the data quality, however, the computational complexity of finding an optimal solution has shown as NP-hard. Nature-inspired optimization algorithms are effective in finding solutions to complex problems. We propose, in this paper, a novel algorithm based on a simple nature-inspired metaheuristic called Black Hole Algorithm (BHA), to address such limitations. Classification is used to categorize data and produce decisions for several domains. To improve the accuracy of classification, researchers have tended to hybridize the neural network with other metaheuristic algorithms in order to better exploit and explore the search space and thereby solve many different classification problems in an effective manner. The hybridization of algorithms is now commonplace and has resulted in the creation of novel methods that are more effective in comparison with those that employ a sole algorithm. Therefore, in this paper, a hybridization approach is employed to utilize the African buffalo optimization (ABO) algorithm as an optimizer to adjust the weights of the probabilistic neural network (PNN). The effectiveness of the proposed (ABO-PNN) method is investigated by applying it to several different classification problems. The efficiency of the ABO algorithm is assessed based on the PNN training results produced and its performance is compared with that of different types of optimization algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of classification accuracy is tested on 11 benchmark datasets. Email spam has been a big issue in recent years. As the percentage of internet users grows, so does the number of spam emails. Technologies are being used for illegitimate and immoral activities, such as phishing and robbery. As a consequence, it is essential to identify fraudulent spammers by employing machine learning techniques. This paper presents a novel spam classification technique that integrates the Harris Hawks optimizer (HHO) algorithm with the k-Nearest Neighbors algorithm (k-NN). The Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm is a new metaheuristic algorithm motivated by Harris' Hawks' cooperative relations and surprises pounce pursue technique in nature. According to empirical results on the dataset, the suggested model can handle high-dimensional data (Spambase). The suggested model's spam detection accuracy is compared to the numerous algorithms, including the Binary Dragonfly Algorithm (BDA), Equilibrium Optimizer (EO), Teaching-Learning-based Optimization, Seagull Optimization Algorithm (SO), and Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA). The growth of the SDO algorithm and its application in various areas, theoretical analysis, and comparison with its preceding and other algorithms are also described in detail. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm which is mathematically modelled by amalgamating the superior features of recently developed Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), and Crow Search Algorithm (CSA). Researchers have already implemented the aforementioned three algorithms and obtained superior quality results for solving diverse optimization problems. The novel hybrid Variegated GWO Algorithm (VGWO) developed in this proposed research work is initially realized and validated for solving IEEE CEC-C06 2019 benchmark functions. Thereafter, the proposed VGWO is utilized as an optimization tool to solve three emerging and complex power system optimization problems which includes energy management of microgrid systems operated in both islanded and grid-connected mode, dynamic economic emission dispatch and reactive power planning (RPP) problem. A comparative analysis of the proposed VGWO approach with other established metaheuristics is undertaken for each optimization problem. Numerical results show that the novel hybrid VGWO algorithm outperformed an ample number of optimization techniques in providing better quality solutions. The proposed hybrid algorithm yielded a 36.93% reduction in active power loss and 36.80% reduction in operating cost with respect to base case condition for RPP problem. Likewise while solving microgrid energy management problems 9–30% savings was realized in the generation cost compared to the ones mentioned in literature. The capability of handling many complex constraints within a minimum amount of computational time to provide consistently best solutions prioritize the proposed hybrid algorithm among its kinds. However, the dimension of objective function also increases with the increasing complexity of optimization tasks. This makes the original SCA appear to have insufficient optimization capability and likely to fall into premature convergence. A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. We introduce a multidimensional multiblock clustering (MDMBC) algorithm in this paper. MDMBC can generate overlapping clusters with similar values along clusters of dimensions. The parsimonious binary vector representation of multidimensional clusters lends itself to the application of efficient meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. In this paper, a hill-climbing (HC) greedy search algorithm has been presented that can be extended by several stochastic and population-based meta-heuristic frameworks. In recent years, several high-performance nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed. It is important to study and compare the convergence, computational burden and statistical significance of these metaheuristics to aid future developments. This study focuses on six recent metaheuristics, namely, ant lion optimization (ALO), arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), salp swarm algorithm (SSA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Optimization of an industrial machining application is tackled in this paper. Optimization is an important and fundamental challenge to solve optimization problems in different scientific disciplines. In this paper, a new stochastic nature-inspired optimization algorithm called Pelican Optimization Algorithm (POA) is introduced. The main idea in designing the proposed POA is simulation of the natural behavior of pelicans during hunting. In POA, search agents are pelicans that search for food sources. The mathematical model of the POA is presented for use in solving optimization issues. The performance of POA is evaluated on twenty-three objective functions of different unimodal and multimodal types. The optimization results of unimodal functions show the high exploitation ability of POA to approach the optimal solution while the optimization results of multimodal functions indicate the high ability of POA exploration to find the main optimal area of the search space. Moreover, four engineering design issues are employed for estimating the efficacy of the POA in optimizing real-world applications. The findings of POA are compared with eight well-known metaheuristic algorithms to assess its competence in optimization. The primary objective of this study is to delve into the application and validation of the Resistance Capacitance Optimization Algorithm (RCOA)—a new, physics-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm. The RCOA, intriguingly inspired by the time response of a resistance–capacitance circuit to a sudden voltage fluctuation, has been earmarked for solving complex numerical and engineering design optimization problems. Uniquely, the RCOA operates without any control/tunable parameters. In the first phase of this study, we evaluated the RCOA's credibility and functionality by deploying it on a set of 23 benchmark test functions. This was followed by thoroughly examining its application in eight distinct constrained engineering design optimization scenarios. This methodical approach was undertaken to dissect and understand the algorithm's exploration and exploitation phases, leveraging standard benchmark functions as the yardstick. The principal findings underline the significant effectiveness of the RCOA, especially when contrasted against various state-of-the-art algorithms in the field. Beyond its apparent superiority, the RCOA was put through rigorous statistical non-parametric testing, further endorsing its reliability as an innovative tool for handling complex engineering design problems. This paper proposes a new meta-heuristic called Jumping Spider Optimization Algorithm (JSOA), inspired by Arachnida Salticidae hunting habits. The proposed algorithm mimics the behavior of spiders in nature and mathematically models its hunting strategies: search, persecution, and jumping skills to get the prey. These strategies provide a fine balance between exploitation and exploration over the solution search space and solve global optimization problems. JSOA is tested with 20 well-known testbench mathematical problems taken from the literature. Further studies include the tuning of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, the Selective harmonic elimination problem, and a few real-world single objective bound-constrained numerical optimization problems taken from CEC 2020. Additionally, the JSOA's performance is tested against several well-known bio-inspired algorithms taken from the literature. The statistical results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms recent literature algorithms and is capable to solve challenging real-world problems with unknown search space. This paper introduces a novel population-based bio-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Blood Coagulation Algorithm (BCA). BCA derives inspiration from the process of blood coagulation in the human body. The underlying concepts and ideas behind the proposed algorithm are the cooperative behavior of thrombocytes and their intelligent strategy of clot formation. These behaviors are modeled and utilized to underscore intensification and diversification in a given search space. A comparison with various state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms over a test suite of 23 renowned benchmark functions reflects the efficiency of BCA. An extensive investigation is conducted to analyze the performance, convergence behavior and computational complexity of BCA. The comparative study and statistical test analysis demonstrate that BCA offers very competitive and statistically significant results compared to other eminent meta-heuristic algorithms. Experimental results also show the consistent performance of BCA in high dimensional search spaces. The optimal power flow (OPF) is a vital tool for optimizing the control parameters of a power system by considering the desired objective functions subject to system constraints. Metaheuristic algorithms have been proven to be well-suited for solving complex optimization problems. The whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is one of the well-regarded metaheuristics that is widely used to solve different optimization problems. Despite the use of WOA in different fields of application as OPF, its effectiveness is decreased as the dimension size of the test system is increased. Therefore, in this paper, an effective whale optimization algorithm for solving optimal power flow problems (EWOA-OPF) is proposed. The main goal of this enhancement is to improve the exploration ability and maintain a proper balance between the exploration and exploitation of the canonical WOA. In the proposed algorithm, the movement strategy of whales is enhanced by introducing two new movement strategies: (1) encircling the prey using Levy motion and (2) searching for prey using Brownian motion that cooperate with canonical bubble-net attacking. To validate the proposed EWOA-OPF algorithm, a comparison among six well-known optimization algorithms is established to solve the OPF problem. All algorithms are used to optimize single- and multi-objective functions of the OPF under the system constraints. Standard IEEE 6-bus, IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus, and IEEE 118-bus test systems are used to evaluate the proposed EWOA-OPF and comparative algorithms for solving the OPF problem in diverse power system scale sizes. The comparison of results proves that the EWOA-OPF is able to solve single- and multi-objective OPF problems with better solutions than other comparative algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
