The rapid discrimination of bacteria is currently an emerging trend in the fields of food safety, medical detection, and environmental observation. Traditional methods often require lengthy culturing processes, specialized analytical equipment, and bacterial recognition receptors. In response to this need, we have developed a paper-based fluorescence sensor array platform for identifying different bacteria. The sensor array is based on three unique carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as sensing units, each modified with a different antibiotic (polymyxin B, ampicillin, and gentamicin). These antibiotic-modified CQDs can aggregate on the bacterial surface, triggering aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. The sensor array exhibits varying fluorescent responses to different bacterial species. To achieve low-cost and portable detection, CQDs were formulated into fluorescent ink and used with an inkjet printer to manufacture paper-based sensor arrays. A smartphone was used to collect the responses generated by the bacteria and platform. Diverse machine learning algorithms were utilized to discriminate bacterial types. Our findings showcase the platform's remarkable capability to differentiate among five bacterial strains, within a detection range spanning from 1.0 × 10 3  CFU/mL to 1.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL. Its practicality is further validated through the accurate identification of blind bacterial samples. Three specific catalysts, namely ZIF-67 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-67), Co@NCF (Co@Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Framework), and 3D NCF (Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Framework), were prepared and studied for pulp and paper mill effluent degradation using heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Numerous characterizations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and N 2 adsorption, were used to characterize the properties of three different catalysts. 3D NCF is remarkably effective at heterogeneous activation of PMS to generate sulfate radicals to degrade pulp and paper mill effluent (PPME) compared to the other as-prepared catalysts. The catalytic activity reveals a sequence of 3D NCF > Co@NCF > ZIF-67.3D NCF could degrade organic pollutants in 30 min at an initial COD concentration of 1146 mg/L of PPME, 0.2 g/L catalysts, 2 g/L PMS, and 50 °C. Consequently, it was observed that the degradation of PPME using 3D NCF followed first-order kinetics, with an activation energy of 40.54 kJ mol -1 . In this study, the performance of a paper-based, screen-printed biofuel cell with mesoporous MgO-templated carbon (MgOC) electrodes was improved in two steps. First, a small amount of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was added to the MgOC ink. Next, the cathode was modified with bilirubin prior to immobilizing the bilirubin oxidase (BOD). The CMC increased the accessibility of the mesopores of the MgOC, and subsequently, the performance of both the bioanode and biocathode. CMC also likely increased the stability of the electrodes. The pre-modification with bilirubin improved the orientation of the BOD, which facilitated direct electron transfer. With these two steps, an open circuit potential of 0.65 V, a maximal current density of 1.94 mA cm -2 , and a maximal power density of 465 μW cm -2 was achieved with lactate oxidase as bioanode enzyme and lactate as fuel. The presence of pharmaceuticals in water is a major problem worldwide. To alleviate this, this study produced carbon blends from avocado seeds and paper waste and activated them with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric acid (HNO3) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4). The effectiveness of the adsorbents was tested in removing ibuprofen (IBU) and paracetamol (PRC) from water. Characterization of the adsorbents by SEM, BET, FTIR and TGA revealed that the morphology was porous, with a large surface area and several functional groups bound to the surface. The concentration effect experiments showed that the uptake of IBU and PRC increased with an increasing initial concentration and that these data were consistent with the Freundlich model. The contact time effect showed that the uptake of PRC was rapid in the initial phase for all the adsorbents. However, the rate gradually slowed down and equilibrium was reached after 40 min for BCMN, 60 min for BCMH and BCMP and 120 min for BCM. IBU, on the other hand, showed that equilibrium was reached after 30 min for BCMN, BCMH and BCMP and after 120 min for BCM. These data complemented the PSOM. The model is based on chemisorption, where electrons are transferred and shared, and hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The △Ho value confirms that the sorption of IBU and PRC was endothermic. The △So was positive, indicating greater freedom at the solution interface during uptake.

In recent years, stable and photoluminescence (PL) tunable fluorescent materials known as carbon dots (CDs) have seen rapid development. Here, a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly approach has been developed to synthesize the orange-red CDs (OR-CDs) with paper tissues as the precursor in the presence of ethanol and concentrated sulfuric acid. The average diameter of the OR-CDs was measured at around 1.25 nm. The as-prepared OR-CDs are composed of carbon cores with the graphite structure distributed in the middle and wrapped or entangled by polymers for the outside. Moreover, the PL characteristics of the OR-CDs under the dilute solution state and the concentrated solution state, respectively, were explored. The former with the blue light showed prominent excitation-dependent characteristics in the range from 365 to 420 nm; the latter rendered the excitation-independent property with distinguished orange-red fluorescence emission. With an increase in the concentration, the emission fluorescence intensities gradually increased under the excitation wavelength of 540 nm, which can be attributed to the aggregation-induced emission property of the OR-CDs. By virtue of their excellent PL properties and low toxicity, we believe that the OR-CDs have potential applications in various optoelectronic areas, especially in white LED fields.

Non-wood paper production, such as bamboo paper, is an alternative to meet the massive demand for paper consumption in the recent era. Bamboo paper, made from Bambusa vulgaris fibers and manufactured with the addition of activated nano-carbon, shows an improvement in paper quality. However, there is a potential worry with the incorporation of activated carbon since it may hinder the degradation process of paper. Concerning the substance's life cycle, degradation assisted by the fungal decomposer of this new product is crucial. This study investigated the effects of the white-rot fungi, viz. Phlebiopsis sp and Pycnoporus sp., on the degradation of bamboo paper with- or without- activated nano-carbon (BPAC and BPNAC). In vitro experiments that combined two variables (Fungal agents and Paper types) were carried out for 12 weeks. The results revealed that Pycnoporus sp. was more effective in decomposing both BPAC and BPNAC rather than Phlebiopsis sp. After being degraded by Phlebiopsis sp. and Pycnoporus sp. for 12 weeks, the remaining mass of BPAC was 64.14% and 48.96%, respectively, while the BPNAC was 69.89% and 38.25%, respectively. The ability of these fungal agents on composite-paper degradation was compared to other similar studies. Further investigation and possible applications were discussed.

As a kind of biomass resource, waste office paper can be used as a carbon precursor to prepare carbon materials. In this work, carbon microspheres with regular shape, uniform particle size and high carbon content were successfully prepared from waste office paper via a hydrothermal synthesis method with sulfuric acid as the catalyst. The effects of reaction temperature and sulfuric acid dosage on the morphology of the carbon microspheres were studied. The formation mechanism of the carbon microspheres was investigated by analyzing the structure and composition of the products. The results show that the hydrolysis of cellulose in waste paper under hydrothermal conditions was the key for the formation of carbon microspheres. The temperature of hydrothermal reaction and the use of sulfuric acid can affect the morphology of carbon microspheres. The carbon microspheres synthesized at 210 °C with 10 mL sulfuric acid have the best surface morphology, with uniform particle size and higher dispersion. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that the carbon microspheres have good capacitance performance and can be used in capacitors. [Display omitted] Lithium metal is deemed a promising anode material for the next-generation batteries with high specific energy. Unfortunately, the growth of Li dendrites and infinite volume change during cycling, caused by the "hostless" feature of metallic Li, have posed a great challenge to the commercialization of Li metal anode. The introduction of appropriate host materials for Li metal is highly desirable. In this work, a N, P dual-doped 3D carbon derived from low-cost quantitative filter paper (NPCQP) is designed and fabricated for direct using as a host for Li metal anode. The resulting NPCQP host achieves a high deposition/stripping Coulombic efficiency of above 97.5 % with a low nucleation overpotential. Moreover, the NPCQP@Li symmetric cells enable an excellent long-term cycling performance (1000 h) with an ultralow voltage hysteresis (12 mV) and stable interface behavior. When paired with the commercial LiFePO 4 cathode, the full cell with NPCQP@Li anode displays impressive long-term cyclic stability and rate capability, outperforming the counter cell with bare Li anode. Carbon microsphere was successfully synthesized from waste office paper via hydrothermal method and high temperature treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. The process of carbon microsphere synthesis from waste office paper fiber using concentrated sulfuric acid was studied, and the influence of H2SO4 concentration and reaction time on the hydrolysis reaction was considered. To investigate the mechanism of conversion of waste office paper to carbon microsphere, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was used to analyze the chemical composition of the supernatant liquid product and the non-carbonized carbon microsphere. The weight loss of the non-carbonized carbon microsphere was assessed through thermogravimetry. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphology. The hydrolysis reaction of waste office paper fiber and synthesis mechanism of carbon microsphere under different conditions were evaluated. The results showed that when the reaction time reached 24 h, the product had uniform particle size and was well dispersed, and the more sulfuric acid present led to the waste office paper fiber being more thoroughly hydrolyzed. A carbonized interlayer effectively helps to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this study, a simple and inexpensive carbon intermediate layer was fabricated using a traditional Korean paper called "hanji". This carbon interlayer has a fibrous porous structure, with a specific surface area of 91.82 m2 g−1 and a BJH adsorption average pore diameter of 26.63 nm. The prepared carbon interlayer was utilized as an intermediary layer in Li–S batteries to decrease the charge-transfer resistance and capture dissolved lithium polysulfides. The porous fiber-shaped carbon interlayer suppressed the migration of polysulfides produced during the electrochemical process. The carbon interlayer facilitates the adsorption of soluble lithium polysulfides, allowing for their re-utilization in subsequent cycles. Additionally, the carbon interlayer significantly reduces the polarization of the cell. This simple strategy results in a significant improvement in cycle performance. Consequently, the discharge capacity at 0.5 C after 150 cycles was confirmed to have improved by more than twofold, reaching 230 mAh g−1 for cells without the interlayer and 583 mAh g−1 for cells with the interlayer. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are integral to efforts to keep global warming below 2°C in accordance with the United Nations' 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Yet the transboundary governance dimensions of NbS remain unclear and largely undocumented. In Southeast Asia, NbS have emphasised the conservation and/ or sustainable commodification of carbon sinks found in terrestrial and mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, peatlands and agricultural soils. Mostly project-driven and fixed-term, these "solutions" have often failed to meet their social and ecological objectives. Increasingly, they have added to cross-border problems of: (1) displaced carbon emissions; and (2) economic migration and societal dispossession. This perspective paper delineates a transboundary governance research agenda to mitigate these trade-offs and enhance the co-benefits of NbS in carbon sinks. Building on NbS literature, it identifies cross-sector, multi-scalar and interdisciplinary pathways to improve transboundary cooperation, inclusion and equity in carbon sink governance in varying Southeast Asian contexts., (© 2023. The research proposes a model to estimate the carbon stock in mangrove forests from multispectral images from Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2B satellites. The Gramame River mangrove, located on the southern coast of Paraíba State, Brazil, was adopted as the study area. Carbon stocks in biomass, below and above ground, were measured from a forest inventory, and vegetation indices were processed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. To define the fit curves, linear and non-linear regressions were used. The choice of the model considered the highest coefficients of determination (R 2 ), the biomass and carbon stock were estimated from the equations. The biomass carbon stock, calculated from field data, corresponded to 22.27 Gg C, equivalent to 81.75 Gg CO 2 , with 13.85 Gg C (50.84 Gg CO 2 ) and 8.42 Gg C (30.91 Gg CO 2 ) stored in biomass above and below ground, respectively. Among the models fitted to the indices calculated from Landsat 8 images, NDVI was the one that best explained the spatial distribution of biomass and carbon, with 90.26%. For Sentinel 2B, SAVI was able to explain 80.76%. The total estimated plant carbon stocks corresponded to 26.66 Gg (16.20 Gg C above and 10.36 Gg C below ground) for Landsat 8 and 27.76 Gg C (16.93 Gg C above and 10.83 Gg C below ground) for Sentinel 2B. To estimate a watershed's response to climate change, it is crucial to understand how human activities and climatic extremes have interacted over time. Over the last century, the Zarivar Lake watershed, Iran, has been subjected to various anthropogenic activates, including deforestation and inappropriate land-management practices alongside the implementation of conservation measures like check dams. To understand the effects of these changes on the magnitude of sediment, organic carbon (OC), and phosphorus supplies in a small sub-watershed connected to the lake over the last century, a lake sediment core was dated using 210 Pb ex and 137 Cs as geochronometers. The average mass accumulation rate (MAR), organic carbon accumulation rates (OCAR), and particulate phosphorus accumulation rates (PPAR) of the sediment core were determined to be 6498 ± 2475, 205 ± 85, and 8.9 ± 3.3 g m -2  year -1 , respectively. Between the late 1970s and early 1980s, accumulation rates were significantly higher than their averages at 7940 ± 3120, 220 ± 60, and 12.0 ± 2.8 g m -2  year -1 respectively. During this period, the watershed underwent extensive deforestation (12%) on steep slopes, coinciding with higher mean annual precipitations (more than double). Conversely, after 2009, when check dams were installed in the sub-watershed, the sediment load to the lake became negligible. The results of this research indicate that anthropogenic activities had a pronounced effect on MAR, OCAR, and PPAR, causing them to fluctuate from negligible amounts to values twice the averages over the last century, amplified by climatic factors. These results imply that implementing climate-smart watershed management strategies, such as constructing additional check dams and terraces, reinforcing restrictions on deforestation, and minimum tillage practices, can facilitate protection of lacustrine ecosystems under accelerating climate change conditions., (© 2024. The present study examines the assumptions, modeling structure, and results of DICE-2023, the revised Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy (DICE), updated to 2023. The revision contains major changes in the treatment of risk, the carbon and climate modules, the treatment of nonindustrial greenhouse gases, discount rates, as well as updates on all the major components. Noteworthy changes are a significant reduction in the target for the optimal (cost-beneficial) temperature path, a lower cost of reaching the 2 °C target, an analysis of the impact of the Paris Accord, and a major increase in the estimated social cost of carbon. The carbon oxides (CO2 and CO) in the insulating oil of power transformers come from the thermal aging of cellulosic insulating paper; the CO2/CO ratio can reflect the aging state of cellulosic insulating paper. At present, the formation mechanisms of CO2 and CO in oil-immersed power transformers are still unclear. In this article, the ReaxFF reaction force field is used to simulate the thermal aging process of cellulosic insulating paper, and the main reaction pathways of CO2 and CO molecules formed by cellulose pyrolysis are obtained. The study finds that the amount of CO2 and CO generated is related to temperature. When the pyrolysis temperature continues to rise, the amount of CO2 generated shows a downward trend, while the amount of CO generated continues to increase, and the CO2/CO ratio continues to decrease. The simulation results are consistent with the previous experimental results. Through pathway tracking, it is found that the CO2 and CO molecules are mainly derived from certain specific atoms of cellulose molecules. The COSMO-RS module is used to analyze the change trend of the solubility of CO2 and CO in insulating oil with temperature. The results show that the solubility of CO2 and CO decreases with the increase of insulating oil temperature, which provides theoretical support for accurate application of carbon oxides aging evaluation index at different temperatures. SiFeO(N,C)‐based ceramic papers were prepared via a one‐pot synthesis approach by dip‐coating a cellulose‐based paper template with a polymeric perhydropolysilazane precursor modified with iron(III)acetylacetonate. The preceramic composites were subsequently pyrolyzed in ammonia atmosphere at 500, 700, and 1000°C, respectively, and the characteristics of the three resulting ceramic papers were comparatively investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that in each sample, the morphology of the template is successfully transferred on the ceramic system, with the cellulose‐derived fibers being converted to elemental carbon encased by a SiFeO(N,C) coating. Electron transparent cross‐sectional samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were prepared from the ceramic papers, employing a standard ultramicrotomy slice cutting procedure, allowing for a detailed characterization of their in situ generated micro‐/nanostructure as well as occurring crystalline phases. TEM imaging and diffraction revealed that depending on pyrolysis temperature a different microstructure with a distinct phase assemblage is generated in the polymer‐derived ceramic papers. Crystallization from the polymer precursor starts with the precipitation of wüstite (Fe(1‐x)O) nanoparticles at 700°C inside the ceramic coating and secondary ε‐FexN at the fiber‐coating interface. Upon pyrolysis at 1000°C however, the sample primarily accommodates metallic α‐iron nanocrystals that impart ferromagnetic characteristics to the ceramic paper. The results show that the template‐assisted polymer‐derived ceramic route is a feasible approach in the production of complex ceramic compounds with fibrous paper‐like morphology. Carbon containing waste has a certain calorific value and utilization value due to the presence of carbon elements. However, the current treatment methods are mostly traditional landfill disposal, incineration, or expensive physical and chemical reaction methods, which clearly do not comply with the rules of the current clean and resource-saving society. In this paper, a new technology and system for carbon containing wastes is proposed, which comprehensively treats and recycles carbon containing wastes, including solid waste, wastewater, waste gas, etc., using pyrolysis–gasification two-stage-cycle technology. The calculation results indicate that the technical scheme proposed in this article is feasible and can achieve the recycling of intermediate and final products, the efficient and clean utilization of carbon containing waste, and the graded utilization of energy. The clean utilization rate of carbon containing waste can be effectively improved, the energy consumption and cost of separate treatments can be reduced, and zero waste emissions can be completely achieved by the comprehensive pyrolysis–gasification two-stage-cycle treatment and resource utilization technology, which is one of the preferred solutions for future resource-saving societies. This study assessed the influence of soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation and climate variability on crop yields in Kongwa District, central Tanzania. In doing so, climate data and soil samples were collected from Mnyakongo and Ugogoni villages through soil sampling, interviews and surveys. Walkley-Black method, Mann-Kendall test, and MS Excel were used to analyze SOC, climate, crop yields respectively. The results exhibited that the accumulation of SOC was significantly greater in soils under organic fertilization (1.15 and 0.80 MgC ha -1 at soil 0-20 cm and 20-30 cm depth) than under no-fertilization (0.35 and 0.30 MgC ha -1 at 0-20 cm and 20-30 cm) and decreased with increasing soil depths. Under these two soil treatments, the average yields for maize, sorghum and millet were almost 1.8 tn ha -1 under organic fertilization and 0.6 tn ha -1 under no-fertilization. Specifically, maize yields ranged from 1.5 to 2.2 tn ha -1 , while both sorghum and millet had 1.1-1.7 tn ha -1 . Therefore, yields were significantly higher under organic fertilizations than under no-fertilizations. Besides, the mean annual rainfall or temperature (1980‒2020) fluctuated at a decreasing (R 2  = 0.21) or an increasing trend (R 2  = 0.30). Comparatively, the yields for maize, sorghum or millet fluctuated at a decreasing trend at R 2  = 0.07, 0.05, or 0.85, respectively. Correspondingly, it was found that the temporal increase in rainfall and temperature had positive (R 2 ~0.5) and negative (R 2 ~0.3) correlations with crop yields, respectively. In this paper, intrinsic dual-emission fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) doped with N and S atoms have been firstly fabricated. The characterization results show that CDs are successfully synthesized with two separate fluorescence emissions at 468 nm and 628 nm, respectively. The strong and selective interaction of Cr (VI) ions with CDs lead to obvious fluorescence decrease of CDs at 468 nm, which is caused by a mixed quenching mechanism. At the same time, the fluorescence at 628 nm increase. Interestingly, the CDs solution show obvious color change under the daylight and UV light, so visualization detection of Cr (VI) can be realized in water samples. Based on the data of the emission intensity ratios of F 468 /F 628 , Cr (VI) can be detected from 3.8 to 38.9 μM combined with the linear correlation coefficient of 0.998, and the lowest detection concentration is 47.2 nM. The platform is satisfactorily applied to the detection of Cr (VI) ions in water samples. Restoring forest cover is a key action for mitigating climate change. Although monoculture plantations dominate existing commitments to restore forest cover, we lack a synthetic view of how carbon accumulates in these systems. Here, we assemble a global database of 4756 field-plot measurements from monoculture plantations across all forested continents. With these data, we model carbon accumulation in aboveground live tree biomass and examine the biological, environmental, and human drivers that influence this growth. Our results identify four-fold variation in carbon accumulation rates across tree genera, plant functional types, and biomes, as well as the key mediators (e.g., genus of tree, endemism of species, prior land use) of variation in these rates. A highly sensitive and selective fluorescent "on-off-on" strategy is established for the synchronous detection of Cu 2+ and glutathione in aqueous solution. Red carbon dots (R-CDs) were prepared by using precursors of 4,5-difluoro-1,2-phenylenediamine and citric acid via a one-step hydrothermal strategy. R-CDs show a relatively long fluorescence lifetime of 3.47 ns under 455 nm excitation and high absolute fluorescent quantum yield of 20.1% with an excitation wavelength of 550 nm. R-CDs exhibit a marked pH-responsive fluorescence property with no significant perturbation from pH 4 to pH 13 even after five cycles. R-CDs with higher concentration of 750 μg·mL -1 exhibit no significant cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility on HeLa cells and A549 cells after incubation for 48 h. The fluorescence of R-CDs at 619 nm (excited at 550 nm) is quenched statically by Cu 2+ and recovered by glutathione subsequently, resulting in a fluorescent "on-off-on" assay for the synchronous detection of Cu 2+ and glutathione. Under optimal conditions, the linear response covers the Cu 2+ concentration range of 1 to 50 μM and the glutathione concentration range of 1 to 70 μM. Detection limits of Cu 2+ and glutathione are 0.16 and 0.41 μM, respectively. This fluorescent probe is applied to the determination of Cu 2+ and glutathione in authentic samples with satisfying results. Land use and land cover patterns impact soil properties and negatively affect soil microbial community and related processes. However, the information regarding the influence of urban land use on soil microbial composition and functioning is limited. Here, we investigated the impact of urban land use patterns on soil microbiological parameters by comparing five contrasting anthropogenic land use classes, i.e. agriculture, park, roadside plantation, street green, and bare land. Soil physicochemical properties, basal respiration (BR), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and enzyme activities were estimated and correlated. The results revealed that soil physicochemical and microbiological properties greatly varied across the five land use classes. Among all the land use types, the roadside plantation had the highest nutrient content, i.e. soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and mineral nitrogen (MN) (1.33%, 0.13%, 84.0 mg kg -1 , respectively), while the soil functional capacities measured in terms of BR, MBC, microbial quotient (QCO 2 ), soil microbial activity (SMA), and dehydrogenase activity (DHA) (9.90 C µg g -1  h -1 , 300 µg g -1 , 0.045 µg h -1 / µg MBC, 9.0 µg ml -1 , 1.30 TPF g -1  h -1 , respectively) were highest in the park. Disturbed street greens were markedly nutrient depleted and apparently exhibited lower microbial activity. Variations in soil BR, MBC, and enzyme activity were revealed to be primarily influenced by soil moisture, available phosphorus, and SOC content. In microbial cell factory, CO 2 release during acetyl-CoA production from pyruvate significantly decreases the carbon atom economy. Here, we construct and optimize a synthetic carbon conserving pathway named as Sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase Cycle with Trifunctional PhosphoKetolase (SCTPK) in Escherichia coli. This cycle relies on a generalist phosphoketolase Xfspk and converts glucose into the stoichiometric amounts of acetylphosphate (AcP). Furthermore, genetic circuits responding to AcP positively or negatively are created. Together with SCTPK, they constitute a gene-metabolic oscillator that regulates Xfspk and enzymes converting AcP into valuable chemicals in response to intracellular AcP level autonomously, allocating metabolic flux rationally and improving the carbon atom economy of bioconversion process. Using this synthetic machinery, mevalonate is produced with a yield higher than its native theoretical yield, and the highest titer and yield of 3-hydroxypropionate via malonyl-CoA pathway are achieved. Biomass-derived carbon materials have been widely studied as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in recent years, and most directly carbonized materials are still inferior to commercial 20% Pt/C in ORR performance. By ball-milling the carbon powder carbonized by yuba, the interior of carbon particles was exposed, which showed that N content inside carbon particles is higher than that on the surface. Then ultrasonication was employed to refresh the surface of the as-obtained carbon particles to increase C-N-active sites to improve their ORR performance. As a result, the as-treated carbon material was comparable to 20% Pt/C as ORR catalyst in all the key ORR activity parameters (only 7 mV and 16 mV negative shift on onset and half-wave potential, respectively, and 0.28 mA cm−2 at −0.5 V versus Hg/HgO larger in limiting current density). Moreover, the ORR durability and the CO resistance of YUC-850 outperformed that of 20% Pt/C. The detailed experiments indicate that ultrasonication treatment can efficiently exfoliate the small raised material portions of low N content from regular particles to expose more refreshed surface with high N content to improve ORR activity. The subsequent centrifugation collection can remove the small particles to inhibit active site coverage and particle coarsening in service, which leads to further improvement in ORR activity and durability. Ultrasonication of another biomass-derived carbon material also showed significantly improved ORR performance. In conclusion, the application of ultrasonication treatment to biomass-derived carbon materials is proposed to fully promote their ORR activity and durability. The superior ORR performance of the treated carbon materials in this paper also indicates that biomass-derived carbon materials indeed have the potential to serve as redox catalysts in the future. With companies increasingly expected to undertake potentially costly climate-response strategies, we explore the roles of management control systems (MCSs) in how companies simultaneously manage their decarbonization objectives and their financial commitments. Based on research at 19 European chemical, steel, and utility corporations, we extend the concept of "proactive/reactive" response strategies by proposing three additional decarbonization strategies: wholesale green transition, green segmentation, and engagement. Second, we highlight the recursive relationship between MCSs and these strategies. We also postulate a dynamic model of MCSs evolution in the decarbonization context, whereby engagement strategies form the foundation of green segmentation and vice versa. Third, drawing on an integrative model, we propose three antecedents to companies' response strategies relevant in this context, namely, their framing of decarbonization as an opportunity or a threat, the different perspectives on the availability of green technologies, and the different perspectives on the policy context. Early detection of histamine in foodstuffs/beverages could be useful in preventing various diseases. In this work, we have prepared a free-standing hybrid mat based on manganese cobalt (2-methylimodazole)-metal organic frameworks (Mn-Co(2-MeIm)MOF) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and explored as a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for determining the freshness of fish and bananas based on histamine estimation. As-developed hybrid mat possesses high porosity with a large specific surface area and excellent hydrophilicity those allow easy access of analyte molecules to the redox-active metal sites of MOF. Furthermore, the multiple functional groups of the MOF matrix can act as active adsorption sites for catalysis. The Mn-Co(2-MeIm)MOF@CNF mat-modified GC electrode demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activities toward the oxidation of histamine under acidic conditions (pH = 5.0) with a faster electron transfer kinetics and superior fouling resistance. The Co(2-MeIm)MOF@CNF/GCE sensor exhibited a wide linear range from 10 to 1500 µM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 89.6 nM and a high sensitivity of 107.3 µA mM -1  cm -2 . Importantly, as-developed Nb(BTC)MOF@CNF/GCE sensor is enabled to detect histamine in fish and banana samples stored for different periods of time, which thus indicates its practical viability as analytical histamine detector., (© 2023.
