Gingival inflammation grade serves as a well-established index in periodontitis. The aim of this study was to develop a deep learning network utilizing a novel feature extraction method for the automatic assessment of gingival inflammation. T-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) was utilized for dimensionality reduction. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on DenseNet was developed for the identification and evaluation of gingival inflammation. To enhance the performance of the deep learning (DL) model, a novel teeth removal algorithm was implemented. Additionally, a Grad-CAM +  + encoder was applied to generate heatmaps for computer visual attention analysis. The mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) for the identification of gingivitis was 0.727 ± 0.117. The accuracy rates for the five inflammatory degrees were 77.09%, 77.25%, 74.38%, 73.68% and 79.22%. The Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) values were 0.83, 0.80, 0.81, 0.81 and 0.84, respectively. The attention ratio towards gingival tissue increased from 37.73% to 62.20%, and within 8 mm of the gingival margin, it rose from 21.11% to 38.23%. On the gingiva, the overall attention ratio increased from 51.82% to 78.21%. Rationale and Objectives: Efficiently detecting and characterizing metastatic bone lesions on staging CT is crucial for prostate cancer (PCa) care. However, it demands significant expert time and additional imaging such as PET/CT. We aimed to develop an ensemble of two automated deep learning AI models for 1) bone lesion detection and segmentation and 2) benign vs. metastatic lesion classification on staging CTs and to compare its performance with radiologists., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study developed two AI models using 297 staging CT scans (81 metastatic) with 4601 benign and 1911 metastatic lesions in PCa patients. Metastases were validated by follow-up scans, bone biopsy, or PET/CT. Segmentation AI (3DAISeg) was developed using the lesion contours delineated by a radiologist. 3DAISeg performance was evaluated with the Dice similarity coefficient, and classification AI (3DAIClass) performance on AI and radiologist contours was assessed with F1-score and accuracy. Training/validation/testing data partitions of 70:15:15 were used. A multi-reader study was performed with two junior and two senior radiologists within a subset of the testing dataset (n = 36)., Results: In 45 unseen staging CT scans (12 metastatic PCa) with 669 benign and 364 metastatic lesions, 3DAISeg detected 73.1% of metastatic (266/364) and 72.4% of benign lesions (484/669). Each scan averaged 12 extra segmentations (range: 1-31). All metastatic scans had at least one detected metastatic lesion, achieving a 100% patient-level detection. The mean Dice score for 3DAISeg was 0.53 (median: 0.59, range: 0-0.87). The F1 for 3DAIClass was 94.8% (radiologist contours) and 92.4% (3DAISeg contours), with a median false positive of 0 (range: 0-3). Using radiologist contours, 3DAIClass had PPV and NPV rates comparable to junior and senior radiologists: PPV (semi-automated approach AI 40.0% vs. Juniors 32.0% vs. Seniors 50.0%) and NPV (AI 96.2% vs. Juniors 95.7% vs. Seniors 91.9%). Purpose: Assessing the metastasis status of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) for hematoxylin and eosin-stained frozen tissue sections by pathologists is an essential but tedious and time-consuming task that contributes to accurate breast cancer staging. This study aimed to review a challenge competition (HeLP 2019) for the development of automated solutions for classifying the metastasis status of breast cancer patients., Materials and Methods: A total of 524 digital slides were obtained from frozen SLN sections: 297 (56.7%) from Asan Medical Center (AMC) and 227 (43.4%) from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), South Korea. The slides were divided into training, development, and validation sets, where the development set comprised slides from both institutions and training and validation set included slides from only AMC and SNUBH, respectively. The algorithms were assessed for area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and measurement of the longest metastatic tumor diameter. The final total scores were calculated as the mean of the two metrics, and the three teams with AUC values greater than 0.500 were selected for review and analysis in this study., Results: The top three teams showed AUC values of 0.891, 0.809, and 0.736 and major axis prediction scores of 0.525, 0.459, and 0.387 for the validation set. The major factor that lowered the diagnostic accuracy was micro-metastasis., Conclusion: In this challenge competition, accurate deep learning algorithms were developed that can be helpful for making a diagnosis on intraoperative SLN biopsy. The clinical utility of this approach was evaluated by including an external validation set from SNUBH.

Echocardiography is the first-line diagnostic technique for heart diseases. Although artificial intelligence techniques have made great improvements in the analysis of echocardiography, the major limitations remain to be the built neural networks are normally adapted to a few diseases and specific equipment. Here, we present an end-to-end deep learning framework named AIEchoDx that differentiates four common cardiovascular diseases (Atrial Septal Defect, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, prior Myocardial Infarction) from normal subjects with performance comparable to that of consensus of three senior cardiologists in AUCs (99.50% vs 99.26%, 98.75% vs 92.75%, 99.57% vs 97.21%, 98.52% vs 84.20%, and 98.70% vs 89.41%), respectively. Meanwhile, AIEchoDx accurately recognizes critical lesion regions of interest along with each disease by visualizing the decision-making process. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that heterogeneous diseases, like dilated cardiomyopathy, could be classified into two phenogroups with distinct clinical characteristics. Finally, AIEchoDx performs efficiently as an anomaly detection tool when applying handheld device-produced videos. Together, AIEchoDx provides a potential diagnostic assistant tool in either cart-based echocardiography equipment or handheld echocardiography device for primary and point-of-care medical personnel with high diagnostic performance, and the application of lesion region identification and heterogeneous disease phenogrouping, which may broaden the application of artificial intelligence in echocardiography., (© 2023. Rationale and Objectives: Prostate MRI improves detection of clinically significant prostate cancer; however, its diagnostic performance has wide variation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to assist radiologists in the detection and classification of prostatic lesions. Herein, we aimed to develop and test a cascaded deep learning detection and classification system trained on biparametric prostate MRI using PI-RADS for assisting radiologists during prostate MRI read out., Materials and Methods: T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted (ADC maps, high b value DWI) MRI scans obtained at 3 Tesla from two institutions (n = 1043 in-house and n = 347 Prostate-X, respectively) acquired between 2015 to 2019 were used for model training, validation, testing. All scans were retrospectively reevaluated by one radiologist. Suspicious lesions were contoured and assigned a PI-RADS category. A 3D U-Net-based deep neural network was used to train an algorithm for automated detection and segmentation of prostate MRI lesions. Two 3D residual neural network were used for a 4-class classification task to predict PI-RADS categories 2 to 5 and BPH. Training and validation used 89% (n = 1290 scans) of the data using 5 fold cross-validation, the remaining 11% (n = 150 scans) were used for independent testing. Algorithm performance at lesion level was assessed using sensitivities, positive predictive values (PPV), false discovery rates (FDR), classification accuracy, Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). Additional analysis was conducted to compare AI algorithm's lesion detection performance with targeted biopsy results., Results: Median age was 66 years (IQR = 60-71), PSA 6.7 ng/ml (IQR = 4.7-9.9) from in-house cohort. In the independent test set, algorithm correctly detected 111 of 198 lesions leading to 56.1% (49.3%-62.6%) sensitivity. PPV was 62.7% (95% CI 54.7%-70.7%) with FDR of 37.3% (95% CI 29.3%-45.3%). Of 79 true positive lesions, 82.3% were tumor positive at targeted biopsy, whereas of 57 false negative lesions, 50.9% were benign at targeted biopsy. Median DSC for lesion segmentation was 0.359. Background: A large training dataset with high-quality annotations is necessary for building an accurate and generalisable deep learning system, which can be difficult and expensive to prepare in medical applications. We present a novel deep-learning-based system, requiring no annotator but weak annotation from a diagnosis report, for accurate and generalisable performance in detecting multiple head disorders from CT scans, including ischaemia, haemorrhage, tumours, and skull fractures., Methods: Our system was developed on 104 597 head CT scans from the Chinese PLA General Hospital, with associated textual diagnosis reports. Without expert annotation, we used keyword matching on the reports to automatically generate disorder labels for each scan. The labels were inaccurate because of the unreliable annotator-free strategy and inexact because of scan-level annotation. We proposed RoLo, a novel weakly supervised learning algorithm, with a noise-tolerant mechanism and a multi-instance learning strategy to address these issues. RoLo was tested on retrospective (2357 scans from the Chinese PLA General Hospital), prospective (650 scans from the Chinese PLA General Hospital), cross-centre (1525 scans from the Brain Hospital of Hunan Province), cross-equipment (1484 scans from the Chinese PLA General Hospital), and cross-nation (CQ500 public dataset from India) test datasets. Four radiologists were tested on the prospective test dataset before and after viewing system recommendations to assess whether the system could improve diagnostic performance., Findings: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting the four disorder types was 0·976 (95% CI 0·976-0·976) for retrospective, 0·975 (0·974-0·976) for prospective, 0·965 (0·964-0·966) for cross-centre, and 0·971 (0·971-0·972) for cross-equipment test datasets, and 0·964 (0·964-0·966) for CQ500 (with only haemorrhage and fracture). The system achieved similar performance to four radiologists and helped to improve sensitivity and specificity by 0·109 (95% CI 0·086-0·131) and 0·022 (0·017-0·026), respectively., Interpretation: Without expert annotated data, our system achieved accurate and generalisable performance for head disorder detection. Background: Current medical image translation is implemented in the image domain. Considering the medical image acquisition is essentially a temporally continuous process, we attempt to develop a novel image translation framework via deep learning trained in video domain for generating synthesized computed tomography (CT) images from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images., Methods: For a proof-of-concept demonstration, CBCT and CT images from 100 patients were collected to demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of the proposed framework. The CBCT and CT images were further registered as paired samples and used as the input data for the supervised model training. A vid2vid framework based on the conditional GAN network, with carefully-designed generators, discriminators and a new spatio-temporal learning objective, was applied to realize the CBCT-CT image translation in the video domain. Four evaluation metrics, including mean absolute error (MAE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), normalized cross-correlation (NCC), and structural similarity (SSIM), were calculated on all the real and synthetic CT images from 10 new testing patients to illustrate the model performance., Results: The average values for four evaluation metrics, including MAE, PSNR, NCC, and SSIM, are 23.27 ± 5.53, 32.67 ± 1.98, 0.99 ± 0.0059, and 0.97 ± 0.028, respectively. Most of the pixel-wise hounsfield units value differences between real and synthetic CT images are within 50. The synthetic CT images have great agreement with the real CT images and the image quality is improved with lower noise and artifacts compared with CBCT images., Conclusions: We developed a deep-learning-based approach to perform the medical image translation problem in the video domain. Although the feasibility and reliability of the proposed framework were demonstrated by CBCT-CT image translation, it can be easily extended to other types of medical images. Since light propagation in a multimode fiber (MMF) exhibits visually random and complex scattering patterns due to external interference, this study numerically models temperature and curvature through the finite element method in order to understand the complex interactions between the inputs and outputs of an optical fiber under conditions of temperature and curvature interference. The systematic analysis of the fiber's refractive index and bending loss characteristics determined its critical bending radius to be 15 mm. The temperature speckle atlas is plotted to reflect varying bending radii. An optimal end-to-end residual neural network model capable of automatically extracting highly similar scattering features is proposed and validated for the purpose of identifying temperature and curvature scattering maps of MMFs. The viability of the proposed scheme is tested through numerical simulations and experiments, the results of which demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the optimized network model. A point cloud is a simple and concise 3D representation, but point cloud generation is a long-term challenging task in 3D vision. However, most existing methods only focus on their effectiveness of generation and auto-encoding separately. Furthermore, both generative adversarial networks (GANs) and auto-encoders (AEs) are the most popular generative models. But there is a lack of related research that investigates the implicit connections between them in the field of point cloud generation. Thus, we propose a new bidirectional network (BI-Net) trained with collaborative learning, introducing more priors through the alternate parameter optimizations of a GAN and AE combination, which is different from the way of combining them at the network structure and loss function level. Specifically, BI-Net acts as a GAN and AE in different data processing directions, where their network structures can be reused. If optimizing only the GAN without the AE, there is no direct constraint of ground truth on the generator's parameter optimization. This unique approach enables better network optimization and leads to superior generation results. Moreover, we propose a nearest neighbor mutual exclusion (NNME) loss to further homogenize the spatial distribution of generated points during the reverse direction. Extensive experiments were conducted, and the results show that the BI-Net produces competitive and high-quality results on reasonable structure and uniform distributions compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. Introduction: Accurate delineation of tumor targets is crucial for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aims to develop a deep learning-based segmentation approach to accurately and efficiently delineate NSCLC targets using diagnostic PET-CT and SBRT planning CT (pCT). Methods: The diagnostic PET was registered to pCT using the transform matrix from registering diagnostic CT to the pCT. We proposed a 3D-UNet-based segmentation method to segment NSCLC tumor targets on dual-modality PETpCT images. This network contained squeeze-and-excitation and Residual blocks in each convolutional block to perform dynamic channel-wise feature recalibration. Furthermore, up-sampling paths were added to supplement lowresolution features to the model and also to compute the overall loss function. The dice similarity coefficient (DSC), precision, recall, and the average symmetric surface distances were used to assess the performance of the proposed approach on 86 pairs of diagnostic PET and pCT images. The proposed model using dual-modality images was compared with both conventional 3D-UNet architecture and single-modality image input. Results: The average DSC of the proposed model with both PET and pCT images was 0.844, compared to 0.795 and 0.827, when using 3D-UNet and nnUnet. It also outperformed using either pCT or PET alone with the same network, which had DSC of 0.823 and 0.732, respectively. Discussion: Therefore, our proposed segmentation approach is able to outperform the current 3D-UNet network with diagnostic PET and pCT images. Coastal ship tracking is used in many applications, such as autonomous navigation, maritime rescue, and environmental monitoring. Many general object-tracking methods based on deep learning have been explored for ship tracking, but they often fail to accurately track ships in challenging scenarios, such as occlusion, scale variation, and motion blur. We propose a memory-guided perception network (MGPN) to address these issues. MGPN has two main innovative improvements. The dynamic memory mechanism (DMM) in the proposed method stores past features of the tracked target to enhance the model's feature fusion capability in the temporal dimension. Meanwhile, the hierarchical context-aware module (HCAM) enables the interaction of different scales, global and local information, to address the scale discrepancy of targets and improve the feature fusion capability in the spatial dimension. These innovations enhance the robustness of tracking and reduce inaccuracies in the bounding boxes. We conducted an in-depth ablation study to demonstrate the effectiveness of DMM and HCAM. Finally, influenced by the above two points, MGPN has achieved state-of-the-art performance on a large offshore ship tracking dataset, which contains challenging scenarios such as complex backgrounds, ship occlusion, and varying scales. Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used in clinical practice for more than 40 years and its safety and preferential accumulation in tumors has been reported for various tumor types, including colon cancer. However, reports on clinical assessments of ICG-based molecular endoscopy imaging for precancerous lesions are scarce. We determined visualization ability of ICG fluorescence endoscopy in colitis-associated colon cancer using 30 lesions from an azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) mouse model and 16 colon cancer patient tissue-samples. With a total of 60 images (optical, fluorescence) obtained during endoscopy observation of mouse colon cancer, we used deep learning network to predict four classes (Normal, Dysplasia, Adenoma, and Carcinoma) of colorectal cancer development. ICG could detect 100% of carcinoma, 90% of adenoma, and 57% of dysplasia, with little background signal at 30 min after injection via real-time fluorescence endoscopy. Correlation analysis with immunohistochemistry revealed a positive correlation of ICG with inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS; r > 0.5). Increased expression of iNOS resulted in increased levels of cellular nitric oxide in cancer cells compared to that in normal cells, which was related to the inhibition of drug efflux via the ABCB1 transporter down-regulation resulting in delayed retention of intracellular ICG. With artificial intelligence training, the accuracy of image classification into four classes using data sets, such as fluorescence, optical, and fluorescence/optical images was assessed. Fluorescence images obtained the highest accuracy (AUC of 0.8125) than optical and fluorescence/optical images (AUC of 0.75 and 0.6667, respectively). These findings highlight the clinical feasibility of ICG as a detector of precancerous lesions in real-time fluorescence endoscopy with artificial intelligence training and suggest that the mechanism of ICG retention in cancer cells is related to intracellular nitric oxide concentration. Although ship detection methods based on deep learning have achieved remarkable progress, the design of the universal ship detection (USD) system is rarely studied. The main challenge of USD lies in the notorious domain bias and shift problem across multiple domains. This article implements USD based on domain-invariant representations to alleviate this issue. Specifically, the proposed method integrates a multilevel domain classification network (MDCN) and a domain-centric cut-paste module (DCM). First, the backbone network is facilitated to learn domain-independent image features from multiple domains through MDCN, thereby reducing the disturbance of domain-specific features to universal detector. Furthermore, the proposed method combines the domain-related synthetic samples generated by DCM to provide MDCN with strong supervision information, which further motivates the network to be more attentive to the domain-invariant representations at the instance level. Finally, we conduct experiments on multiple ship datasets in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical domains to verify the effectiveness of the method. The results show that the proposed method outperforms baseline by around 2.95% average precision (AP50), which achieves an effective USD system by complementing the information between domain-invariant representations. Although the existing deep-learning-based hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising methods have achieved tremendous success, recovering high-quality HSIs in complex scenes that contain mixed noise is still challenging. Besides, these methods have not fully explored the local and global spatial–spectral information of HSIs. To address the above issues, a novel HSI mixed noise removal network called subspace projection attention and residual channel attention network (SPARCA-Net) is proposed. Specifically, we propose an orthogonal subspace projection attention (OSPA) module to adaptively learn to generate bases of the signal subspace and project the input into such space to remove noise. By leveraging the local and global spatial relations, OSPA is able to reconstruct the local structure of the feature maps more precisely. We further propose a residual channel attention (RCA) module to emphasize the interdependence between feature maps and exploit the global channel correlation of them, which could enhance the channel-wise adaptive learning. In addition, multiscale joint spatial–spectral input and residual learning strategies are employed to capture multiscale spatial–spectral features and reduce the degradation problem, respectively. Synthetic and real HSI data experiments demonstrated that the proposed HSI denoising network outperforms many of the advanced methods in both quantitative and qualitative assessments. It is significant to identify the moldy status of stored maize by fungi infection in the early stage. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with the sparse auto-encoders (SAE) and convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms was used to classify the moldy grades of maize kernels. The HSI data were obtained in the range of 400–1000 nm, and four grades from health to heavy mildew were distinguished using the measured fungal spores of maize. The depth spectral features were represented using SAE and the image features were extracted by CNN. K nearest neighbors, support vector machine (SVM), and partial least squares discriminant analysis classifiers were combined with the spectral and image features to establish classification models to identify the different moldy grades of maize kernels. The comparison results indicated that the fusion of SAE and CNN combined with the SVM classifier to construct the SAE-CNN-SVM model had the most satisfactory identification result with high correct recognition rates of 99.47% and 98.94% for the training and testing sets, respectively, and the values of sensitivity and specificity were 0.95–1. The moldy grades were presented intuitively on the maize image based on pixels or kernel-wise. Therefore, the HSI with the SAE-CNN-SVM model had good recognition ability for the early detection of moldy maize kernels, which could potentially provide technical support for the development of online detection of moldy maize kernels during storage. Active learning is a unique abstraction of machine learning techniques where the model/algorithm could guide users for annotation of a set of data points that would be beneficial to the model, unlike passive machine learning. The primary advantage being that active learning frameworks select data points that can accelerate the learning process of a model and can reduce the amount of data needed to achieve full accuracy as compared to a model trained on a randomly acquired data set. Multiple frameworks for active learning combined with deep learning have been proposed, and the majority of them are dedicated to classification tasks. Herein, we explore active learning for the task of segmentation of medical imaging data sets. We investigate our proposed framework using two datasets: 1.) MRI scans of the hippocampus, 2.) CT scans of pancreas and tumors. This work presents a query-by-committee approach for active learning where a joint optimizer is used for the committee. At the same time, we propose three new strategies for active learning: 1.) increasing frequency of uncertain data to bias the training data set; 2.) Using mutual information among the input images as a regularizer for acquisition to ensure diversity in the training dataset; 3.) adaptation of Dice log-likelihood for Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD). The results indicate an improvement in terms of data reduction by achieving full accuracy while only using 22.69% and 48.85% of the available data for each dataset, respectively. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are attracting increasing research interest owing to their distinct tunable physical properties. Moreover, the ubiquitous defects in 2D materials offer an opportunity to tailor their electronic properties. Recently, atomic-level structural modification methods for 2D materials have been developed, further triggering the need for the precise control of defects. Following the ground-breaking advancements in the atomic-scale characterization of defects in 2D materials, valuable information on defect-driven electronic properties has been published. It is therefore important to present a review work on the recent research developments on atomic-level defect control and characterization of 2D materials. This Perspective highlights the type and role of atomic defects in 2D materials, as well as some current technologies for engineering such defects. In addition, we emphasize on atomic-level characterization methods with a focus on aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and deep learning as a powerful method for characterizing defects in 2D materials. Based on the two characterization techniques, we present the experimental results of laser-induced structurally modified MoTe2 and transition metal decorated h-BN. We believe that this work will provide fundamental knowledge for engineering and characterizing defects in 2D materials for the design of application-specific electronic devices. Soil pollution is a serious threat to human life and development. Different remedial measures are applied to soils with different levels of contamination. The degree of soil contamination in different areas is generally evaluated and categorised based on the analysis of samples. Regional soil sampling sites are generally sparse because of the cost of sampling and other factors, which makes it difficult to accurately assess the extent of regional soil contamination. In this study, a spatial classification model was established for the Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) pollution level using a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) neural network considering that the sampling information gradually diminishes with increasing distance between the sampling and prediction points. In this study, a method is proposed for the prediction of the spatial distribution of soil pollution categories based on sparse samples. We also established a model for the spatial distribution of organic pollution categories. The analysis of an actual contaminated area shows that the DEHP concentrations at different locations can be effectively predicted with the proposed method by categorising the contamination levels of specific DEHP samples. The results show that the method can be used to classify the degree of light/severe DEHP contamination. The results are in good agreement with the actual situation, verifying the validity of the method. Abstract Protecting cybersecurity is a non‐negotiable task for smart grids (SG) and has garnered significant attention in recent years. The application of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning (DL), holds great promise for enhancing the cybersecurity of SG. Nevertheless, previous surveys and review articles have failed to comprehensively investigate the intersection between DL and SG cybersecurity. To address this gap, this study presents a survey of the latest advancements in DL technology and their relevance to SG cybersecurity. First, the functional mechanisms and scope of application of common DL techniques are explored. Subsequently, SG cyberthreats are categorised into distinct types of cyberattacks that have not been systematically examined in previous surveys. Based on this, a thorough review of the application of DL techniques in addressing each cyberthreat along with recommendations and a generalised framework for enhancing cyberattack detection using DL is offered. Finally, insights are provided into the emerging challenges presented by DL applications in SG cybersecurity that are yet to be widely acknowledged, and potential research avenues are proposed to address or alleviate these challenges.
