This paper exploits the sharp escalation of violence in Colombia in the 1980s associated with the emergence of drug cartels to provide novel evidence on the long-run effects of violence exposure throughout the life-course, on children's educational attainment and academic achievement using administrative data. I find that, a higher homicide rate in early-childhood is associated with a higher probability of school dropout and conditional on completing high school, lower scores on a national end-of-high school exam. Results are robust to several falsification tests, and analyses of potential sources of selection bias. I provide supportive evidence that changes in fetal, child, and adolescent health outcomes are important potential mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the effect of transfers from the General Participations System (SGP) on Colombian municipal development indicators during 2003-2017. A Municipal Development Index is proposed, considering indicators of educational achievement, health coverage, and crime rates. This index is studied in the municipal context using spatial autocorrelation techniques. A panel-type econometric model was estimated to evaluate the effect of transfers on the index. The results suggest that increases in education, health, culture, and recreation transfers generate positive, differential effects on the index. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate several machine learning models under the CRISP-DM methodology in order to determine, through its metrics, the best model for predicting the performance of high school students in the Colombian Caribbean region in the Saber 11º test, while proposing a new methodology for evaluating the results of the test by regions in order to take into account the socioeconomic particularities of each one of them. The CRISP-DM methodology is taken as a basis due to its maturity, this methodology allows the extraction of business and data knowledge, offers a guide for data preparation, modeling and validation of the models; it is expected that the proposed methodology will be implemented by the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Higher Education (ICFES), departmental education secretariats and educational institutions. A variety of techniques and tools were used to develop ETL processes to obtain a data set with the most relevant attributes, in order to evaluate four machine learning models developed with the J48 (C4.5), LMT, PART and Multilayer Perceptron algorithms; obtaining that the best data set and the best learning model is obtained using the InfoGain attribute selection method and the LMT decision tree algorithm, respectively. Therefore, this project will facilitate the actors of the National Education System to make decisions for the benefit of students and the quality of education in the country, especially in the Caribbean region. Colombia boasts extensive geodiversity thanks to complex geological processes that have shaped its landscape over geological time. The eastern region of the country is characterized by ancient rock formations, covered by a substantial layer of sediments, influenced by tectonic and erosive forces. These forces have given rise to unique geoforms that qualify as geosites. Thirteen sites were identified based on their geological context, accessibility, visibility, and tourism potential, by assessing their geoscientific and scenic interest. A methodology was applied, drawing from various experts in Geological Heritage both in Colombia and globally. Geosites in the east of Colombia encompass geological outcrops, structures, mountain ranges, reservoirs, karst formations, waterfalls, and archaeological and mining sites, all of significant geoscientific, educational, and scenic value. Each site was rated on a scale of 1 (low) to 3 (high), resulting in an average scientific value of 2.42, indicating a moderate to high geoconservation value. Geosites with the highest geoconservation rating (3) include the Structural Slopes of Guateque, El Encanto Hot Springs, Upín Salt Flats, Cerro Azul and the Orión Gate. The Mountain Ranges of San Luis de Gaceno, karstic dissolution sinkholes, and the Pink Plants of Tranquilandia fall into the moderate to high-value category (rated at 2.5). Other sites, such as the Eroded and Stepped Escarpments of Las Juntas, La Esmeralda Reservoir (Chivor), Sedimentary Slabs of Guejar River, Sandstone Tables, and the Love's Waterfall, also hold geological importance. We recommend implementing geoconservation policies for these geosites to preserve and develop them, taking into account their considerable geotourism potential. This research develops an academic production function for the educational process of industrial engineers in Colombia. The proposed function objectively analyses the relationships between the academic competencies obtained in secondary education and the university. The data used correspond to the standardized tests of 4,977 students at the end of high school and university. In the first stage of the model, the structure of the production function was empirically evaluated using a Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modeling approach. Consequently, in the second stage, the efficiency of the relationships in the academic production function is estimated using Data Envelopment Analysis. The Goodness of Fit index of the empirical model was 0.89, thus, confirming the relationships between the construct's variables. The model validates four transformation relationships and subsequently estimates the efficiency of the interactions in the production function. The average efficiency results of the model in its constant scale are 16.30%, 2.17%, and 5.43%. In conclusion, the model explains the capacity of universities to transform inputs (basic competencies of the secondary school) into desired outputs (professional academic competencies). Open in new tab Download slide Open in new tab Download slide OBJECTIVES Globally congenital heart disease mortality is declining, yet the proportion of infant deaths attributable to heart disease rises in Colombia and other middle-sociodemographic countries. We aimed to assess the accessibility of paediatric cardiac surgery (PCS) to children <18 years of age in 2016 in the South American country of Colombia. METHODS In Bogotá, Colombia, a multi-national team used cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study designs to adapt and evaluate 4 health system indicators at the national level: first, the population with timely geographic access to an institution providing PCS; second, the number of paediatric cardiac surgeons; third, this specialized procedure volume and its national distribution; and fourth, the 30-day perioperative mortality rate after PCS in Colombia. RESULTS Geospatial mapping approximates 64% (n  = 9 894 356) of the under-18 Colombian population lives within 2-h drivetime of an institution providing PCS. Twenty-eight cardiovascular surgeons report performing PCS, 82% (n  = 23) with formal training. In 2016, 1281 PCS procedures were registered, 90% of whom were performed in 6 of the country's 32 departments. National non-risk-adjusted all-cause 30-day perioperative mortality rate after PCS was 2.73% (n  = 35). CONCLUSIONS Colombia's paediatric population had variable access to cardiac surgery in 2016, largely dependent upon geography. While the country may have the capacity to provide timely, high-quality care to those who need it, our study enables future comparative analyses to measure the impact of health system interventions facilitating healthcare equity for the underserved populations across Colombia and the Latin American region.
