Many plant materials in nature have the ability to change their shape to respond to external stimuli, such as humidity or moisture, to ensure their survival or safe seed release. A well-known example for this phenomenon is the pinecone, which is able to open its scales at low humidity due to the specific bilayer structures of the scale. Inspired by this, we developed a novel humidity-driven actuator based on paper. This was realized by the lamination of untreated paper made from eucalyptus fibers to a paper–carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite. As observed, the hygroexpansion of the composite can be easily controlled by the amount of CMC in the impregnated paper sheet, which, thus, controls the morphologic deformation of the paper bilayer. For a more detailed understanding of these novel paper soft robots, we also studied the dynamic water vapor adsorption, polymer distribution and hygroexpansion of the paper–polymer composites. Finally, we applied a geometrically nonlinear finite element model to predict the bending behavior of paper bilayers and compared the results to experimental data. The study aims to present the results of paper compression under an axial load. Different heights of samples subjected to compression were taken into account. The main goal of the analysis was to determine experimentally the maximum compression load. In addition, numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were validated to refer to empirical results. The performed numerical simulations were founded on Green–Lagrangian nonlinear equations for large displacements and strains. The progressive failure of the compressed orthotropic material after exceeding maximum stresses was based on Hill’s anisotropy theory. Nonlinear calculations were conducted by using a typical Newton–Raphson algorithm for achieving a sequence convergence. The accuracy of the developed model was confirmed experimentally in compression tests. The technique of analysing the shape of the compressed paper sample on the basis of images recorded during the measurement was used. The obtained test results are directly applicable in practice, especially in the calculation of the mechanical properties of corrugated cardboard and in determining the load capacity of cardboard packaging. Knowing the maximum compressive stress that packaging paper can withstand allows packaging to be properly designed and its strength assessed in the context of the transport and storage of goods.

The potential of paper and paperboard as fiber-based materials capable of replacing conventional polymer-based materials has been widely investigated and evaluated. Due to paper's limited extensibility and inherent heterogeneity, local structural variations lead to unpredictable local mechanical behavior and instability during processing, such as mechanical forming. To gain a deeper understanding of the impact of mechanical behavior and heterogeneity on the paper forming process, the Finite Element Method (FEM) coupled with continuum modeling is being explored as a potential approach to enhance comprehension. To achieve this goal, utilizing experimentally derived material parameters alongside stochastic finite element methods allows for more precise modeling of material behavior, considering the local material properties. This work first introduces the approach of modeling heterogeneity or local material structure within continuum models, such as the Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM). A fundamental challenge lies in accurately measuring these local material properties. Experimental investigations are being conducted to numerically simulate mechanical behavior. An overview is provided of experimental methods for material characterization, as found in literature, with a specific focus on measuring local mechanical material structure. The dynamic mechanical behavior and cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels, which are extensively employed in product cushioning packaging due to their exceptional energy absorption capabilities, were examined using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Several factors, such as maximum acceleration–static stress, cushioning coefficient–static stress, and other curves, were analyzed under various impact conditions. The simulated stress–strain, deformation modes, cushioning coefficients, and other parameters demonstrate consistency with the experimental results. The acceleration, maximum compression, and cushioning coefficient obtained from the experiment and simulation calculation were 30.68 g, 15.44 mm, and 2.65, and 31.96 g, 14.91 mm, and 2.79, respectively. The results indicate that all error values were less than 5%, confirming the precision and reliability of the model. Furthermore, the model was utilized to simulate and predict the cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels with different cell structures and paper thicknesses. These results provide a solid basis for enhancing the design of subsequent honeycomb element structures.

Today, the toilet paper market offers product types with varying number of plies, providing better mechanical strength and liquid absorption. Several tissue paper perforation systems exist, and the best commonly applied is a top-cutting mechanism that includes an oblique blade, a combined oblique blade, or a simple spiral blade. The perforation efficiency must be high to have an easy sheet separation from the roll of the toilet paper, which does not always occur. Hence, consumer satisfaction can depend on the perforation performance. To study this, a laboratory perforation system was used to perforate different commercial toilet papers (in brands and number of plies) and evaluate their perforation efficiency. A finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the curve of the progression of perforation efficiency as a function of the cut distance. The main findings were a stabilization of the perforation efficiency from a cut distance of 6 mm and a 15% increase in the cut distance for the laboratory blade to match the industrial perforation efficiency. The aim of this discussion is to establish a connection between the model for sandwich beams presented in Schöftner (Acta Mech 234:2543–2560, 2023) and the so-called Krajcinovic model. Although the two models turn out to be quite similar, Krajcinovic model displays a richer kinematics and has been developed in the literature by following slightly different methodologies with respect to that adopted by Schöftner, the latter having the merit of providing equilibrium equations that allow the computation of the interfacial stresses. This work deals with fracture mechanisms in quasi-brittle materials, focusing on the characterization of the Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) of specimens under tensile load. Particularly, paper was used as model material. Experiments were conducted on notched and unnotched specimens. Based on an image analysis of these observations, a stochastic finite element model was developed, using both a nonlocal stress-based approach and a discretized random field modeling of the Young's modulus. The proposed methodology allowed characterizing the damage zone and the size of the FPZ, analyzing the influence of the mesostructure, composed of flocs (fiber aggregates where the basis weight is larger than the average one) and antiflocs (complement of flocs). The area of the active FPZ and the normalized stress drop were linked using a surface energy dissipated in the active FPZ. The stress drop, until limiting value, increased with the width of the active FPZ. Finally, a relationship between the surface energy and the nonlocal internal length was established. To explore the application of cold-formed thin-walled steel-paper straw board(CTSPSB) composite wall in practical engineering and further meet people's living requirements, it was proposed to open holes in the composite wall to simulate the doors and windows in practical applications. Two composite wall specimens were tested to study the shear performance of the CTSPSB composite wall. Through the analysis of specimens' damage forms and experimental data, the characteristic values of bearing capacity and lateral stiffness were obtained. And then, the model of the composite wall was built by ANSYS, and finite element analysis (FEA) results were consistent with the experimental results, which could verify the feasibility of the finite element model. Moreover, the model needed to open holes and extensive parameter analysis was carried out. The FEA results indicate the most reasonable distance between screws around the opening is 150 mm; the most suitable spacing between the small studs is 400 mm; the position of the opening has the least influence on the shear performance, and the difference between the results of the five groups of models is within 5%; while the width of the opening has the greatest impact on the shear performance. Compared with the wall without opening, the bearing capacity of the wall with an opening width of 600 mm, 1200 mm and 1800 mm decreases by 38%, 46% and 52% respectively. Embossing is a functional and strategic process for creating high-quality multi-sensory tissue-paper products. Embossing modifies the sheet surface by generating hill and/or valley designs, changing the third-dimension z with a compressive die. This research work specifically concerns the impact study of the engraving finishing geometry on the final properties of tissue paper. This work led us to conclude that, even though the sheets individually present a higher hand-feel (HF) value for the straight finishing geometry, the highest softness was obtained in the two-ply prototype for the round finishing geometry. Moreover, this study confirmed that the HF value reduces with the increase of the bulk, being more accentuated for the micropattern. Relevant differences could not be seen in the spreading kinetics of the liquid droplets over time. Thus, the finishing geometry of the 3D plates did not impact the absorption kinetics on these samples. The finite element model allows us to understand the effect of the plate pattern and its finishing geometry on the paper, and the simulation results were in accordance with the experimental results, showing the same trend where patterns with a round finishing geometry marked the tissue-paper sheet more than patterns with a straight finishing did. Embossing is a converting process in which the surface of a tissue paper sheet is changed under high pressure, allowing different functions. In this work, the authors intend to study how the embossing pressure affects the main properties of tissue paper, using a laboratory embossing system. An optimum pressure was achieved at 2.8 bar to this embossing laboratory set-up. The effect of pressure when densifying the paper sheet gives it a gain in mechanical strength but no differences in terms of liquid absorbency. The two embossing patterns present different behaviors but both evidence losses in mechanical and softness properties. On the other hand, the finite element method (FEM) does not show clear evidence of how the pressure affects the paper strength. For the deco die, it is possible to observe that the amount of yielding is slightly higher for lower pressure (2.4 bar), but this plasticity state parameter is very similar for 2.8 bar and 3.2 bar. For the micro die, FEM simulations of the manufacturing pressure do not show a considerable impact on the amount of plasticity state of the material; only for 3.2 bar, it shows a change in the pattern of the plasticity state of the paper during the embossing processes. The embossing operation is one of the processes of tissue paper converting. The embossing parameters influence the final properties of tissue products, such as mechanical, softness, and bulk. In this study, the influence of the rubber hardness used against the embossing steel rolls with a pattern created by intaglio engraving was studied. Three different configurations of rubber plates stacking, each plate with different hardness, were studied. After embossing, mechanical properties, softness, and bulk were evaluated to analyze the effect of rubbers hardness on these properties. Furthermore, a Finite Element Model of the embossing operation was used that considered the same rubber plates stacking configurations used in experiments, and it was able to replicate the experimental results. This work led us to conclude that the configuration where two rubber plates with different hardness, where the rubber plate with higher hardness is in contact with the tissue paper sheet, has shown to be the best solution to obtain higher softness. These findings support the use of embossing operations rubber rolls with a low hardness internal layer and a high hardness external layer in industry. Thus, finite element models were also shown to be reliable tools to virtually test other configurations, such as, for example, three or more rubber plates with different hardness. Since embossing is one of the tissue paper transformation operations with the greatest impact on the key properties of the final product, this study allows the producer to optimize them by varying the hardness of the rubber roll, as well as its configuration. It is pointed out that the Levinson-Reddy beam theory should not be used as a higher-order model for the core, although it considers cross-sectional warping: this beam model is applicable for zero shear stress conditions at the core-skin-interfaces only, which is usually not the case for sandwich structures. This paper examines the influence of cavity size and location in the insulation paper on the Partial Discharge (PD) activities through Finite Element Method (FEM). The model consisted of a conductor wrapped with insulation paper. Two different locations of the spherical cavities were introduced in this study, namely Location 1 (L1) and Location 2 (L2), located at the center and left corner of the insulation paper. The model introduced two different sizes of cavities with diameters of 0.5 mm and 0.8 mm. An AC voltage source of 17 kV, 50 Hz, was applied at the conductor while the bottom of the insulation paper was grounded. The real and apparent PDs were obtained by integrating the current flowing through the cavity and ground electrode with the respective surface area. The simulation was carried out for 100 cycles. The resultant model was used to study the PD occurrence, magnitude, and Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) within the insulation paper. It is found that the large cavity size produces a lower number of PD occurrences per cycle than the small cavity size. The large cavity size produces a higher charge magnitude as compared with the small cavity size. The PD occurrence per cycle and charge magnitude are higher for the cavity location at L1 compared to L2. The PRPD yields the same pattern for cavity location at L1 and L2, whereby the differences are only on the charge magnitude and PD occurrence per cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The corrugated compensators are important components in the piping system, absorbing mechanical deformation flexibly. To reduce the risk of the piping system with corrugated compensators and improve the safety and stability of industrial equipment, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of bellows is necessary. However, the stress monitoring method of corrugated compensators with limited localized sensors lack real-time and full-domain sensing. Therefore, this paper proposes a digital twin construction method for global mechanical response sensing of corrugated compensators, combining Gaussian process regression in machine learning and finite element analysis. The sensing data of three types of displacements are used as the associated information of a finite element model with 19,800 elements and its digital twin. The results show that the values of performance metrics correlation of determination R2 and standardized average leave-one-out cross-validation CVavg of the digital twin satisfy the recommended threshold, which indicates that the digital twin has excellent predictive performance. The single prediction time of the digital twin is 0.76% of the time spent on finite element analysis, and the prediction result has good consistency with the true response under dynamic input, indicating that the digital twin can achieve fast and accurate stress field prediction. The important state information hidden in the multi-source data obtained by limited sensors is effectively mined to achieve the real-time prediction of the stress field. Nomex honeycomb, as the core part of sandwich structure, has been widely used in the aviation and aerospace industries. Ultrasonic cutting, as a technology that can reduce machining defects, has been highlighted in recent years, but some problems in the cutting process still need to be investigated significantly. Finite element method (FEM) offers an alternative way of in-depth understanding of the problems. However, the multi-layer structure of the Nomex honeycomb cell wall, which is the resin-coated aramid paper, makes it difficult to establish a detailed multi-layered finite element (FE) model at a macro-scale level. Therefore, a novel segmented material mechanical model, which is applicable to the equivalent single-layer model, is proposed based on the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of the multi-layer structure of the resin-coated aramid paper. Moreover, the calculating method of equivalent mechanical parameters of the multi-layer structure are proposed theoretically. The proposed method is first verified by FE models at a micro-scale level in both single-layer and multi-layer approaches. Additionally, simulations and experiments are performed to verify that the proposed method performs well in the simulation of ultrasonic cutting for Nomex honeycomb, and the difficulty of modelling and CPU time of simulation are reduced significantly. This paper investigates the behaviour of partial discharge (PD) in transformer insulation paper based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). The three-dimensional (3D) FEM model consists of conductor and insulation paper, representing part of a transformer’s high voltage winding. The conductor’s width, height, and length used in this study were 2.4 mm, 11.5 mm, and 16 mm. An insulation paper thickness of 1 mm was modelled around the conductor. An internal cavity with a diameter of 0.5 mm cavity was introduced within the insulation paper. This study introduced two locations of the spherical cavities at the centre and left corner of the insulation paper: Location 1 (L1) and Location 2 (L2). An AC voltage of 33 kV, 50 Hz, was applied to the conductor while the bottom of the insulation paper was grounded. The model was used to study the electric field distribution within the insulation paper and its effect on PD current and charge magnitude. The influence of cavity location on the charge magnitude was also examined. It is found that the electric field distribution is influenced by the conductor configuration as well as the location of the cavity. The electric field in the cavity is the highest at L1 compared to L2. The first PD occurs faster for the cavity with a high electric field. Due to the PD occurrence at the same inception field, the real PD current and charge magnitude is similar at different locations. With the rapid proliferation of portable and wearable electronics, energy autonomy through efficient energy harvesting has become paramount. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) stand out as promising candidates due to their silent operation, high reliability, and maintenance-free nature. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and analysis of a micro-scale TEG for powering such devices. A planar configuration was employed for its inherent miniaturization advantages. Finite element analysis using ANSYS reveals that a double-layer device under a 50 K temperature gradient generates an impressive open-circuit voltage of 1417 mV and a power output of 2.4 μW, significantly exceeding its single-layer counterpart (226 mV, 0.12 μW). Validation against the analytical model results yields errors within 2.44% and 2.03% for voltage and power, respectively. Furthermore, a single-layer prototype fabricated using paper shadow masks and sputtering deposition exhibits a voltage of 131 mV for a 50 K temperature difference, thus confirming the feasibility of the proposed design. In this paper, a novel multi-layered waveguide-fed slotted cavity antenna array operating in the K-band (i.e., 18–27 GHz) is presented. The antenna is composed of 64 (8 × 8) groups of 2 × 2 subarrays with low profile, and fed by a 1–64 ways waveguide corporate-feed-network. In order to obtain a low sidelobe level (SLL), the Chebyshev power distribution is introduced into the feeding network to accurately taper the power distribution among the subarrays. To realize the amplitude-tapering network, a simple T-junction, which can provide equal phase but unequal power, is used. The antenna array is analyzed and validated by using the finite element method (FEM). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed antenna array can achieve a broad bandwidth of 21.9%, and a good gain as 29.1 dBi. Additionally, the first SLL can be as small as − 28.3 dB and −20 dB in the E-plane and the H-plane, respectively. The overall size of the slotted cavity antenna array is 169.6 × 169.6 × 7.23 mm3. An automotive battery, also known as a car battery, is a device that provides electrical energy to start a vehicle's engine; it uses chemical reactions between lead (Pb) and other chemicals to generate electricity. The automotive industry has been receiving positive feedback from consumers, and the industry has been striving to improve the quality of its product packaging, which protects the battery and facilitates its distribution. The research aims to increase customer satisfaction in the automotive industry by creating better battery packaging design. The research employs a range of methods to achieve this goal, including conducting an initial survey with customers who have purchased and used car batteries to identify problems, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) to create design packaging development, life-cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental impact of various materials and contains sustainability analysis, and finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of the packaging corrugated paper using SolidWorks 2021 software, and lastly, a customer feedback survey is conducted to assess the attributes of packaging development. The design criteria prioritize green materials, ergonomics, durability, reliability, and ease of use. In conclusion, the study recommends the use of corrugated paper for battery packaging in the automotive industry. Thin-walled tubular deployable composite boom (DCB) has gained significant attention due to its lightweight, simple structure and high packaging efficiency. The experimental and numerical simulation methods were employed in this paper to investigate the folding behavior of the DCB. Using T700/epoxy unidirectional reinforced prepreg as raw material, DCB specimens were prepared by the vacuum bag method. To complete the folding experiments of DCB specimens, a folding mechanism was designed and manufactured. Folding experiments of DCB specimens were conducted and folding moment versus rotational displacement curves were measured. In addition, a Finite Element Model (FEM) was established to predict the folding behavior of the DCB. Different failure criteria were considered in the numerical analysis, including the Tsai‐Hill criterion and maximum stress criterion. Prediction results using the FEM were compared with experimental results, and both sets of results were in good agreement. It is shown that the DCB can achieve the folding function without failure. The research results in this paper are of great significance to the practical engineering application of the DCB. Poly-(meta-phenylene isophthal-amide) (PMIA) is regarded as an ideal insulating medium for electronic devices owing to its excellent chemical stability and breakdown strength. However, the poor thermal conductivity limited the application under complex electrical-thermal environment. In this work, the size-graded AlN/PMIA composite papers were fabricated, with a multi-scale structure of matrix and fillers, and maintain qualified stability, mechanical strength and electrical insulation properties. With doping 40 wt% of 10 μm AlN and 10 wt% of 200 nm AlN, the optimum paper with in-plane (λ ∥) and out-of-plane (λ ⊥) of optimal paper reached thermal conductivity of 17.3 W/(mK) and 1.96 W/(mK) is obtained, and the breakdown strength increased to 69 kV/mm. The pressure on a horse's back can affect their performance during the equestrian competition. A better pressure distribution on the surface of the horse's back can be obtained using a custom saddle, considering the rider's weight and back anatomy. The first part of the paper presents a recent study regarding the mathematical and CAD methods used to generate the hyperbolic paraboloid of the saddle surface. The second part of the paper shows the saddle design modelled using CAD software. The horse's back and rider's anatomy stay at the base of the saddle's surface. The saddle surface is divided into several areas for a better and more accurate evaluation. The third part of the paper presents the saddle evaluation using the finite elements method, using two load simulation cases in different rider situations. Paper-like electronics with thin multi-layer structures, which can be repeatedly bent and twisted like paper, are promising for diverse innovation application. Employing surface-mounted flexible strain sensors is a general way to monitor the bending characteristics of each layer inside paper-like electronics, however, the deviation of measured strain will reach up to 15% on account of the layer-to-layer interface sliding, neutral axes offset resulted from the extra effect of the flexible strain sensor. Here, we proposed a precise measurement method to evaluate the surface bending strain of paper-like electronics by using flexible sensors. In combination with the effects of the thickness, length, etc, a strain compensation model has been established to compensate the measurement deviation. Meanwhile, a slip failure model has been developed to guide the design of the sensitivity unit within the non-sliding area of the flexible sensor. In several applications, ranging from computational geometry and finite element analysis to computer graphics, there is a need to approximate functions defined on triangular domains rather than rectangular ones. For this purpose, frequently used interpolation methods include barycentric interpolation, piecewise linear interpolation, and polynomial interpolation. However, the use of polynomial interpolation methods may suffer from the Runge phenomenon, affecting the accuracy of the approximation in the presence of equidistributed data. In these situations, the constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares approximation on rectangular domains was shown to be a successful approximation tool. In this paper, we extend it to triangular domains, by using both Waldron and discrete Leja points. This paper is dedicated to Len Bos on the occasion of his retirement. Len, for us, is a master of mathematics and also a big friend. He introduced us to the fascinating world of "finding good interpolation nodes and effective interpolation strategies", mostly in the multivariate setting. This paper introduces a literature review of the accomplished research to calculate the strain concentration factor which shall be considered during the concrete coated subsea pipelines design. The strain concentration results from the discontinuity of the concrete coating which is applied to pipe joints to enhance the pipeline stability on the seabed. The paper introduces a definition of the strain concentration factor and a conclusive explanation of the work performed to calculate the strain concentration factor using the following three methods: full-scale tests, analytical models, and numerical models. The paper also introduces other works addressing the contribution of concrete coating to pipe stiffness. Literature indicates that while full-scale tests produce the most accurate values for the strain concentration factor, due to cost implications, the method is limited to a small range of pipe sizes and coating properties. Although the analytical method produces acceptable results, prediction of strain concentration factor due to concrete coating sliding and beyond steel yield stress and concrete crushing limit is unpredictable. The numerical method using finite element (FE) analysis indicates acceptable strain concentration factor values, however, careful consideration shall be taken due to possible modelling inaccuracies. The review shows that the strain concentration factor is mainly influenced by the thickness and strength of the concrete coating as well as the shear capacity of the external corrosion coating, whilst due to its low impact, the effect of the concrete coating reinforcement is not considered for most of the analysis due to low significance. The umbilical cable is a vital component of subsea production systems that provide power, chemical agents, control signals et al., and its requirement for reliability is exceedingly high. However, as the umbilical cable is a composite structure comprising multiple functional units, the reliability analysis of such cables involves numerous parameters that can impact calculation efficiency. In this paper, the reliability analysis of a new kind of umbilical cable with carbon fiber rod under tension is analyzed. The global dynamic analytical model is first established to determine the maximum tension load, then the local analytical model of umbilical cable including each unit are constructed by finite element method (FEM). Based on the mechanical analytical model, the reliability of umbilical cable under tension load is studied using response surface method (RSM) and Monte Carlo method. During the calculation process, a new tangent plane sampling method to calculate the response surface function (RSF) is proposed in this paper, which could make sampling points faster come close to the RSF curve, and it is proved that the calculation efficiency increases about 33% comparing with traditional method. Featured Application: Determining Young's modulus is an important step in the analysis of any material that undergoes elastic deformation. A quick estimation of it can be performed using the finite element method (FEM) with the procedure presented in this paper. Knowing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials, which are currently widely used in various industrial branches, represents a major objective for designers. This happens when new materials are used that are not yet in production or for which the manufacturer cannot give values. Given the practical importance of this problem, several methods of determining these properties have been proposed, but most of them are laborious and require a long calculation time. And, some of the proposed calculation methods are very approximate, providing only upper and lower limits for these values. Experimental measurements are obviously the optimal solution for solving this problem, but it must be taken into account that this type of method consumes time and material resources. This paper proposes a sufficiently accurate and fast estimation method for determining Young's modulus for a homogenized fibrous material. Thus, the FEM is used to determine the natural frequencies of a standard bar, for which there are sufficiently precise classical methods to express the engineering constants according to the mechanical properties of the component phases of the homogenized material. In this paper, Young's modulus is determined for such a material using the relationships that provide the eigenfrequencies for the longitudinal vibrations. With the adopted model, transverse and torsional vibrations are eliminated by blocking the nodes on the surfaces of the bars. When the converter transformer core is grounded at multi-points, a fault loop will be formed and a circulation will be generated, leading to local overheating of the magnetic core and decomposition of insulating oil. Therefore, the converter transformer core will be single point grounded. As a rare internal lead of converter transformer, the ground current on the core ground lead can often reflect the running state of converter transformer. In this paper, theoretical analysis, modeling simulation and experimental research are carried out on the ground current of converter transformer at one point. Firstly, according to the structure characteristics of converter transformer, the analytical modeling of ground current is carried out. Secondly, based on the structure characteristics of oil paper insulation, the equivalent capacitance of converter transformer is calculated. Then, the analytical and finite element simulation model of converter transformer is established, and the ground current of converter transformer is calculated. The subject of the paper is the modelling of multi-bolted connections that are at the pretensioning stage. Taking a systematic approach to the modelling issue, the connection was treated as a composite of four subsystems: a bolt set, a pair of joined elements and a contact layer between them. The first part of the paper describes experimental studies to determine the contact stiffness of a pair of elements separated from an exemplary asymmetric multi-bolted connection. The normal loading and unloading direction of the contact joint was considered. The tests were performed with the use of an INSTRON 8850 servo-hydraulic testing machine equipped with an extensometer. A normal stiffness characteristic in the form of an exponential function was proposed for the tested contact joint. Resin-impregnated paper (RIP) bushing has gained significant interest due to its extended application in Extra High Voltage (EHV) and Ultra High Voltage (UHV) electricity transmission systems. However, the design criterion of its overall structure, the geometry parameters of the condenser layers, and stress release devices, etc., are still not fully understood. This article proposes a unique electric field optimization technique to integrate both the analytical and the numerical methods. The charge simulation method (CSM) is employed to create the overall equipotential surface, within which the finite element analysis (FEA) is adapted to study the localized field enhancement effects, taking into consideration the multi-physics coupled fields. A case study is performed on an actual UHV bushing. The results are compared to the traditional methods, to demonstrate the benefit of the hybrid method.

We demonstrate how programmable shape evolution and deformation can be induced in plant-based natural materials through standard digital printing technologies. With nonallergenic pollen paper as the substrate material, we show how specific geometrical features and architectures can be custom designed through digital printing of patterns to modulate hygrophobicity, geometry, and complex shapes. These autonomously hygromorphing configurations can be "frozen" by postprocessing coatings to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of uses and applications. Through computational simulations involving the finite element method and accompanying experiments, we develop quantitative insights and a general framework for creating complex shapes in eco-friendly natural materials with potential sustainable applications for scalable manufacturing. This article presents the characteristics of four straw-filled beetle elytron plate (BEPsc) nonload-bearing walls, with their thermal and mechanical properties ascertained by the finite element method, focusing on structural parameters reported in previous studies and further optimized in this paper. The results are as follows: 1) The sequence of the four models' mechanical and thermal insulation properties with the reported structural parameters is given. The mechanical properties are mainly affected by the core layer's out-of-plane bending moment of inertia Ix. The insulation capability is mainly governed by the minimum cross section of the core concrete. Based on this result, a BEP with nonuniform cross-sectional honeycomb walls is proposed. 2) Further optimization is conducted on the two models with the weakest mechanical and thermal properties. The I-beam beetle elytron plate (IBEPsc) is proven most suitable for nonload-bearing walls. The potential for end-trabecular beetle elytron plate (EBEPsc) in hollow floors is expected. 3) As biomimetic models emerge constantly, it is of great significance to conduct parallel comparisons between new and old models to determine their performance levels and advantages. This paper calculates and analyses electric fields generated by high-voltage overhead power transmission lines. These fields have significant implications for safety and design considerations. The study utilises a numerical technique to determine the electric field distribution in regions containing multiple charges. Based on this method, a computer program is developed to calculate the electric field profile at ground level and two meters above ground level for both 400 kV overhead power lines. The results demonstrate the method's effectiveness in accurately computing the electric field intensity for various line configurations, making it applicable to any power line design. The paper also highlights the potential health effects associated with exposure to these electric fields, including leukaemia, breast cancer, cognitive impairments, and reproductive consequences. The proposed method can also be applied to other transmission lines, providing valuable insights into health considerations. The accuracy of the computation methods is validated using the finite element analysis method. The arrangement of eccentric bracing has a significant impact on the seismic performance of structures. However, there is no further stipulation on different forms of eccentric bracing in the current Chinese code. At the same time, there is a lack of research on the seismic loss of eccentrically braced structures by Chinese domestic scholars. Therefore, this paper designs different forms of eccentrically braced frames and analyzes them according to the concept of seismic engineering based on performance, which provides some reference for the selection of the eccentrically braced steel frame structure layout in future engineering practice. In this paper, K-shaped, V-shaped, and D-shaped eccentrically braced steel frame structures with 3, 5, and 8 floors are designed, and the finite element analysis model is used for static napping and dynamic time history analysis. The results show that the K-shaped eccentrically braced structure has the best performance in bearing capacity and stiffness and has good seismic and collapse resistance performance. In the FEMA P-58 seismic assessment and vulnerability assessment, it is found that the V-shaped eccentrically braced structure has the smallest loss. However, it is necessary to fully consider the acceleration sensitivity of the non-structural components in the design. In general, the seismic performance of the eccentrically braced structure is improved by the energy dissipation beam yielding to consume energy, which provides a useful reference for structural design. To reduce the influence of the permanent magnet (PM) installation error on the electromagnetic characteristics of the outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (OPMSM), the rotor structure of the OPMSM is optimized in this paper. The optimization method of adding auxiliary teeth on the surface of the rotor core is studied, and the influence of different auxiliary teeth heights on the electromagnetic performance of OPMSM is analyzed. It is found that adding auxiliary teeth with suitable height can greatly reduce the installation error of the PM, increase the mechanical stability of the motor, and ensure that the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor remain at a good level. Firstly, the topology and parameters of the motor proposed in this paper are introduced and analyzed. Secondly, the influence of PM installation error on the electromagnetic performance of the motor is analyzed based on the finite element method (FEM), and the necessity of eliminating PM installation error is demonstrated. Then, the parametric scanning method is used to analyze the influence of auxiliary teeth height change on the electromagnetic performance of the motor, and the selection standard of the optimal auxiliary teeth height is determined. Due to the influence of many factors, distribution cables are often densely placed at the bottom of the cable trench. As a result, it is easy for distribution cables to become the thermal bottleneck of the whole transmission line. To address this dilemma, this paper establishes a finite element simulation model of a cable trench to analyze the hot spots of cables with different arrangements in the cable trench. Then, the model's accuracy is verified based on real temperature rise experiments. For an arrangement with overheating risk, the ampacity improvement method of filling the cable trench with high-thermal-conductivity material was proposed, and the ampacity improvement effect under different filling ratios was assessed. Finally, combined with the analysis of economic benefit and cost, the method of determining the optimal filling ratio was used, and the impact resistance of the cables under the impact of new energy load was analyzed. The results indicate that, for the case of the optimal filling ratio, the cables in the dense cable trench showed superior impact resistance. The bottom platform is an important underwater sensor that can be used in communications, early warning, monitoring, and other fields. It may be affected by earthquakes, winds, waves, and other loads in the working environment, causing changes in posture and affecting its sensing function. Therefore, it is of practical engineering significance to analyze the force conditions and posture changes in the bottom platform. In order to solve the problem of postural stability of the underwater bottom platform, this paper establishes a fluid and structural simulation model of the underwater bottom platform. First, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology is used to solve the velocity distribution and forces in the watershed around the bottom platform under a 3 kn ocean current, where the finite element method (FEM) numerical calculation method is used to solve the initial equilibrium state of the bottom platform after it is buried. On this basis, this paper calculates the forces on the bottom platform and the posture of the bottom platform at different burial depths under the action of ocean currents. Additionally, the effects of different burial depths on the maximum displacement, deflection angle, and postural stability of the bottom platform are studied. The calculation results show that when the burial depth is greater than 0.6 m, and the deflection angle of the bottom platform under the action of the 3 kn sea current is less than 5°, the bottom platform can maintain a stable posture. This paper could be used to characterize the postural stability of underwater bottom platforms at different burial depths for the application of underwater sensors in ocean engineering. This paper deals with the issue of spatial modeling of façade frame scaffolding, with the focus on developing a methodology for modeling subfloor components. A laboratory experiment on a standard scaffold base assembly consisting of two spans is described. Load tests were carried out, and additional measuring points were added to the measuring apparatus compared to the standard procedure. The nonlinear stiffness of the numerical models was derived from the measured value. Furthermore, planar models of the scaffold subfloors were created and validated against experiments. Finally, the paper proposes scaffold stiffness in the horizontal direction (perpendicular to the façade and parallel to the façade) that can be used in a full spatial member of the scaffold model. Pores are common defects generated during fabrication, which restrict the application of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. To quantitatively understand the effects of pores on mechanical strength, this paper proposes a representative volume element model of unidirectional (UD) C/C composites based on the finite element method. The Hashin criterion and exponential degraded rule are used as the failure initiation and evolution of pyrolytic carbon matrices, respectively. Interfacial zones are characterized using the cohesive constitutive. At the same time, periodic boundary conditions are employed to study transverse tensile, compressive, and shear deformations of UD C/C composites. Predicted results are compared with the experimental results, which shows that the proposed model can effectively simulate the transverse mechanical behaviors of UD C/C composites. Based on this model, the effects of microstructural parameters including porosity, pore locations, the distance between two pores, pore clustering, and pore shapes on the mechanical strength are investigated. The results show that porosity markedly reduces the strength as porosity increases. When the porosity increases from 4.59% to 12.5%, the transverse tensile, compressive, and shear strengths decrease by 35.91%, 37.52%, and 30.76%, respectively. Pore locations, the distance between two pores, and pore clustering have little effect on the shear strength of UD C/C composites. For pore shapes, irregular pores more easily lead to stress concentration and matrix failure, which greatly depresses the bearing capacity of UD C/C composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevailing approach to the wind resistance design of transmission towers is rooted in the quasi-static method. However, this methodology faces criticism for neglecting tower-line coupling dynamics. Despite efforts to boost structural wind resilience, the research on tower failure mechanisms, especially under extreme winds considering tower-line coupling, is limited. To address this gap, the wind-induced dynamic failure modes of the transmission tower-line system are investigated in this paper. The consistent discrete random flow generation method is employed to simulate the fluctuating wind field for transmission lines. Incorporating the compressive buckling mode of angle steel, the plastic hinge model of the frame element is employed to simulate mechanical nonlinearity. A typical transmission tower-line system is concerned, with a finite element model established for a three-tower, four-line coupled configuration. The findings reveal that the wind-induced collapse of the transmission tower is directly triggered by the buckling failure of the compressed main members, with the vulnerable section located beneath the lower cross-arm. The transmission tower experiences bidirectional bending and compression instability under an unfavorable wind direction. In contrast, the traditional pushover collapse modes of the transmission tower cannot fully capture the characteristics of the collapse failure, mainly due to the ignorance of the transverse wind force action induced by the coupling effect. This research underscores the importance of incorporating lateral dynamic considerations into transmission tower designs and advocates for optimizing strategies to mitigate wind-induced collapse modes. In this paper, we present a mathematical study of particle diffusion inside and outside a spherical biological cell that has been exposed on one side to a propagating planar diffusive front. The media inside and outside the spherical cell are differentiated by their respective diffusion constants. A closed form, large-time, asymptotic solution is derived by the combined means of Laplace transform, separation of variables, and asymptotic series development. The solution process is assisted by means of an effective far-field boundary condition, which is instrumental in resolving the conflict of planar and spherical geometries. The focus of the paper is on a numerical comparison to determine the accuracy of the asymptotic solution relative to a fully numerical solution obtained using the finite element method. The asymptotic solution is shown to be highly effective in capturing the dynamic behaviour of the system, both internal and external to the cell, under a range of diffusive conditions. This paper investigates the integration of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) within the frame of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies, highlighting the potential for intelligent infrastructure management through the utilization of big data analytics, machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT). This study presents a success case focused on a novel SHM methodology for detecting and locating damages in metallic aircraft structures, employing dimensional reduction techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA). By analyzing strain data collected from a network of sensors and comparing it to a baseline pristine condition, the methodology aims to identify subtle changes in local strain distribution indicative of damage. Through extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations and a PCA contribution analysis, the research explores the influence of various factors on damage detection, including sensor placement, noise levels, and damage size and type. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in detecting cracks and holes as small as 2 mm in length, showcasing the potential for early damage identification and targeted interventions in diverse sectors such as aerospace, civil engineering, and manufacturing. This paper investigates the hydrodynamics of a bent elastic tube with an instantaneously deformed wall using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method. The study reveals that the tube deforms continuously with the fluid's progression, exhibiting diverse deformation patterns. The flow patterns do not adhere to Poiseuille's profile, with higher velocities detected on the inner side of the bent region during deformation.
