1. Task-Oriented GNNs Training on Large Knowledge Graphs for Accurate and Efficient Modeling

Abstract

A Knowledge Graph (KG) is a heterogeneous graph encompassing a diverse range of node and edge types. Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks (HGNNs) are popular for training machine learning tasks like node classification and link prediction on KGs. However, HGNN methods exhibit excessive complexity influenced by the KG's size, density, and the number of node and edge types. AI practitioners handcraft a subgraph of a KG G relevant to a specific task. We refer to this subgraph as a task-oriented subgraph (TOSG), which contains a subset of task-related node and edge types in G. Training the task using TOSG instead of G alleviates the excessive computation required for a large KG. Crafting the TOSG demands a deep understanding of the KG's structure and the task's objectives. Hence, it is challenging and time-consuming. This paper proposes KG-TOSA, an approach to automate the TOSG extraction for task-oriented HGNN training on a large KG. In KG-TOSA, we define a generic graph pattern that captures the KG's local and global structure relevant to a specific task. We explore different techniques to extract subgraphs matching our graph pattern: namely (i) two techniques sampling around targeted nodes using biased random walk or influence scores, and (ii) a SPARQL-based extraction method leveraging RDF engines' built-in indices. Hence, it achieves negligible preprocessing overhead compared to the sampling techniques. We develop a benchmark of real KGs of large sizes and various tasks for node classification and link prediction. 2. Towards a GML-Enabled Knowledge Graph Platform

Abstract

This vision paper proposes KGNet, an on-demand graph machine learning (GML) as a service on top of RDF engines to support GML-enabled SPARQL queries. KGNet automates the training of GML models on a KG by identifying a task-specific subgraph. This helps reduce the task-irrelevant KG structure and properties for better scalability and accuracy. While training a GML model on KG, KGNet collects metadata of trained models in the form of an RDF graph called KGMeta, which is interlinked with the relevant subgraphs in KG. Finally, all trained models are accessible via a SPARQL-like query. We call it a GML-enabled query and refer to it as SPARQLML. KGNet supports SPARQLML on top of existing RDF engines as an interface for querying and inferencing over KGs using GML models. The development of KGNet poses research opportunities in several areas, including meta-sampling for identifying task-specific subgraphs, GML pipeline automation with computational constraints, such as limited time and memory budget, and SPARQLML query optimization. KGNet supports different GML tasks, such as node classification, link prediction, and semantic entity matching. We evaluated KGNet using two real KGs of different application domains. Compared to training on the entire KG, KGNet significantly reduced training time and memory usage while maintaining comparable or improved accuracy. Abstract

يعد القطاع الصناعي من أبرز القطاعات الاقتصادية التي تسهم في بناء أي اقتصاد، ويتناول بحثنا الدور الذي يؤديه القطاع الصناعي في بناء الاقتصاد العراقي ونمو ناتجه المحلي، وتسليط الضوء على ملامح الخلل في البنية المكونة لنمو القطاعات الإنتاجية الصناعية، وتوجيه الصناعة في عملية تغيير البنية الإنتاجية عبر الدعم والتحفيز الحكومي. واستخدم الباحث في تحليله الاسلوب الاستقرائي الاستنباطي وتم استخدام المنهج الوصفي في عرض المفاهيم الخاصة بالناتج المحلي الاجمالي ودور القطاع الصناعي في نمو الناتج المحلي. أما أهم الاستنتاجات التي توصل إليها البحث تتمثل بانخفاض مساهمة القطاع الصناعي في الناتج المحلي الاجمالي وتوصل البحث إلى إعادة بناء القطاعات واعطاء دور أكبر للقطاع الخاص والقضاء على الفساد واستثمار واردات النفط في إعادة المنشئات المعطلة.

Abstract

Trichoderma is environmentally vital due to their plant growth-promoting effects (such as enhancement of nutrients supply, suppression of plant pathogens, and promotion of plant defense). Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are diverse chemical substances emitted by Trichoderma spp. The potential role of VOCs in biological control and plant growth promotion has recently been recognized. Here, the Trichoderma-VOCs' performance for plant growth promotion and suppression of plant pathogens are evaluated. We further investigated VOC emission profiles of T. harzianum using GC–MS. The Trichoderma-VOCs exhibited significant (p < 0.05) antifungal properties against all tested pathogenic fungi. T. atroviride-VOCs showed a decisive inhibition of Alternaria panax, Botrytis cinerea, Cylindrocarpon destructans, and Sclerotinia nivalis. The germinating seeds demonstrated growth enhancement in the presence of Trichoderma-VOCs emitted by different strains. Low levels of cyclopentasiloxane, decamethyl, cyclotetrasiloxane, and octamethyl were found in T. harzianum KNU1 strain whereas cyclopentasiloxane, decamethyl, cyclotetrasiloxane, and octamethyl showed higher emission levels as Si-containing compounds. The results reveal the potentiality of VOCs as a biocontrol resource against deleterious rhizosphere microorganisms and underline the importance of Trichoderma-VOCs emissions in regulating plant growth and development.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of teaching a school rhetoric unit employing Osborn's (1963) model. The study sample consisted of 70 Jordanian eleventh-grade students, with 35 in the experimental group and 35 in the control group. Two instruments were used to collect data: a scale designed according to Osborn's model and an achievement test. The school unit of rhetorical concept development was applied to six classes over six weeks in the experimental group, while the control group was taught using the standard method. The findings showed statistically significant differences in favour of the experimental group, with means of 76.66 and 66.15, respectively. The t-test value was 13.02, statistically significant at a significance level 0.01. The impact percentage was calculated at 92%, indicating a statistically significant result according to the Karl formula. Therefore, this percentage is a positive indicator of the effectiveness of using the Osborn model for the conceptual development of the experimental group of students. Based on the findings, the study recommends using this model for teaching rhetoric and literary criticism in other school classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Emotion recognition is a significant issue in many sectors that use human emotion reactions as communication for marketing, technological equipment, or human–robot interaction. The realistic facial behavior of social robots and artificial agents is still a challenge, limiting their emotional credibility in dyadic face-to-face situations with humans. One obstacle is the lack of appropriate training data on how humans typically interact in such settings. This article focused on collecting the facial behavior of 60 participants to create a new type of dyadic emotion reaction database. For this purpose, we propose a methodology that automatically captures the facial expressions of participants via webcam while they are engaged with other people (facial videos) in emotionally primed contexts. The data were then analyzed using three different Facial Expression Analysis (FEA) tools: iMotions, the Mini-Xception model, and the Py-Feat FEA toolkit. Although the emotion reactions were reported as genuine, the comparative analysis between the aforementioned models could not agree with a single emotion reaction prediction. Based on this result, a more-robust and -effective model for emotion reaction prediction is needed. The relevance of this work for human–computer interaction studies lies in its novel approach to developing adaptive behaviors for synthetic human-like beings (virtual or robotic), allowing them to simulate human facial interaction behavior in contextually varying dyadic situations with humans. This article should be useful for researchers using human emotion analysis while deciding on a suitable methodology to collect facial expression reactions in a dyadic setting.

Abstract

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, it represents 90-95% of neoplasms arising from the kidney. The Xp11.2 RCC translocation is a subtype of RCC that is defined by different translocations involving the Xp11.2 chromosome, all of which result in transcription factor E3 (TFE3) gene fusions. We presented 2 adult cases of Xp11-RCC, one patient had lymph node metastases and the second patient also had liver metastases. Both patients improved with surgical treatment by radical total nephrectomy with lymph node dissection, in addition to neoadjuvant medical treatment.

Abstract

ImportanceDelays in screening programs and the reluctance of patients to seek medical attention because of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 could be associated with the risk of more advanced colorectal cancers at diagnosis.ObjectiveTo evaluate whether the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was associated with more advanced oncologic stage and change in clinical presentation for patients with colorectal cancer.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis retrospective, multicenter cohort study included all 17 938 adult patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021 (pandemic period), and from January 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020 (prepandemic period), in 81 participating centers in Italy, including tertiary centers and community hospitals. Follow-up was 30 days from surgery.ExposuresAny type of surgical procedure for colorectal cancer, including explorative surgery, palliative procedures, and atypical or segmental resections.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was advanced stage of colorectal cancer at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were distant metastasis, T4 stage, aggressive biology (defined as cancer with at least 1 of the following characteristics: signet ring cells, mucinous tumor, budding, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymphangitis), stenotic lesion, emergency surgery, and palliative surgery. The independent association between the pandemic period and the outcomes was assessed using multivariate random-effects logistic regression, with hospital as the cluster variable.ResultsA total of 17 938 patients (10 007 men [55.8%]; mean [SD] age, 70.6 [12.2] years) underwent surgery for colorectal cancer: 7796 (43.5%) during the pandemic period and 10 142 (56.5%) during the prepandemic period. Logistic regression indicated that the pandemic period was significantly associated with an increased rate of advanced-stage colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01-1.13; P = .03), aggressive biology (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.15-1.53; P P = .03).Conclusions and RelevanceThis cohort study suggests a significant association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the risk of a more advanced oncologic stage at diagnosis among patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and might indicate a potential reduction of survival for these patients.

Abstract

Facial expression recognition using deep neural networks has become very popular due to their successful performances. However, the datasets used during the development and testing of these methods lack a balanced distribution of races among the sample images. This leaves a possibility of the methods being biased toward certain races. Therefore, a concern about fairness arises, and the lack of research aimed at investigating racial bias only increases the concern. On the other hand, such bias in the method would decrease the real-world performance due to the wrong generalization. For these reasons, in this study, we investigated the racial bias within popular state-of-the-art facial expression recognition methods such as Deep Emotion, Self-Cure Network, ResNet50, InceptionV3, and DenseNet121. We compiled an elaborated dataset with images of different races, cross-checked the bias for methods trained, and tested on images of people of other races. We observed that the methods are inclined towards the races included in the training data. Moreover, an increase in the performance increases the bias as well if the training dataset is imbalanced. Some methods can make up for the bias if enough variance is provided in the training set. However, this does not mitigate the bias completely. Our findings suggest that an unbiased performance can be obtained by adding the missing races into the training data equally.

Abstract

The Ordovician of North and West Africa comprises three main transgressive–regressive sequences understood as ‘second-order’ cycles of 10–15 myr duration. Tide- to wave-dominated shallow-marine clastic successions, preserving incidental bryozoan carbonates to the north, include fluvial deposits over the most proximal southern stretches of the platform. The boundary with Cambrian strata remains unclear but the latter are progressively less represented to the south in the undifferentiated ‘Cambro-Ordovician’. To the north, graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites combined with palynomorphs provide a robust biostratigraphic frame. Maximum flooding intervals occurred in the early to middle Tremadocian, middle Darriwilian and middle to late Katian. Two events interfered with an overall long-term transgressive trend. The ‘intra-Arenig’ (late Floian?) tectonic event highlighted palaeohighs coinciding with Paleoproterozoic basements. Gondwanan drainage basins were reorganized, which had an impact on sediment sourcing and distribution of detrital material (e.g. zircons) feeding the pre-Variscan Europe. The second event is the end-Ordovician glaciation. The domain supported the greatest part of the Hirnantian glaciers and may also have preserved pre-Hirnantian glacial archives. It is not until the very latest Ordovician that offshore conditions developed far inland; it is however suspected that this inundation benefited from a transient postglacial isostatic flexure.

30. Susceptibility of Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to Natural Products and Entomopathogenic Fungi

Abstract

Background: Synthetic insecticides have a direct adverse effect on the natural enemies and long-term residual effects causing serious environmental pollution as well. The public awareness for a clean environment increased the attention on developing alternative eco-friendly approaches. This study aimed to detect the effect of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and natural products of plant-extract origin on the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under laboratory conditions. Results: The drench-bioassay results showed that mortality of larvae by B. bassiana KACC40224 increased from 10% to 80% as the dose was increased from 10 × 105 to 10 × 109 conidia ml−1. However, mortality by M. anisopliae KACC40029 reached maximally 60% at the dose of 10 × 109 conidia ml−1. All natural-extract products tested against the insect pest were effective, except lavender oil, they caused mortality varied between 10% and 100%. Rosemary oil was found to be the most effective essential oil, showing 10% to 100% mortality indices at a concentration of 0.1 and 0.2% (v/v), respectively. S. frugiperda eggs tend to be more susceptible to entomopathogenic fungi rather than the larvae. The essential oils exhibited significant insecticidal properties against the larvae of S. frugiperda. Conclusion: This study could help in the development of potential biopesticides for the environment-friendly management of the fall armyworm S. frugiperda pest and emphasize the advantages of entomopathogenic fungi application.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, the field of Enterprise Architecture has attracted researchers, and many Enterprise Architecture modeling frameworks have been proposed. However, in order to support the different needs, the different frameworks offer many different elements types that can be used to create an Enterprise Architecture. This abundance of elements can make it difficult for the end-user to differentiate between the usages of all the various elements in order to identify what elements they actually need. Therefore, this research analyzes existing Enterprise Architecture modeling frameworks and extract the common properties that exists in the different Enterprise Architecture modeling notations. In this study, we performed a Systematic Literature Review that aims at finding the most commonly used Enterprise Architecture modeling frameworks in the Enterprise Architecture literature. Additionally, the elements defined in these frameworks are used to create a taxonomy based on the similarities between the different Enterprise Architecture Frameworks. Our results showed that TOGAF, ArchiMate, DoDAF, and IAF are the most used modeling frameworks. Also, we managed to identify the common elements that are available in the different Enterprise Architecture Frameworks mentioned above and represent the common elements in a multilevel model. The findings of this study can make it easier for the end-user to pick the appropriate elements for their use cases, as it highlights the core elements of Enterprise Architecture modeling. Additionally, we showed how our model can be extended to support the needs of different domains. Abstract

Facial emotion recognition is an inherently complex problem due to individual diversity in facial features and racial and cultural differences. Moreover, facial expressions typically reflect the mixture of people’s emotional statuses, which can be expressed using compound emotions. Compound facial emotion recognition makes the problem even more difficult because the discrimination between dominant and complementary emotions is usually weak. We have created a database that includes 31,250 facial images with different emotions of 115 subjects whose gender distribution is almost uniform to address compound emotion recognition. In addition, we have organized a competition based on the proposed dataset, held at FG workshop 2020. This paper analyzes the winner’s approach—a two-stage recognition method (1st stage, coarse recognition, 2nd stage, fine recognition), which enhances the classification of symmetrical emotion labels.

Abstract

Machine learning can encode and amplify negative biases or stereotypes already present in humans, resulting in high-profile cases. There can be multiple sources encoding the negative bias in these algorithms, like errors from human labelling, inaccurate representation of different population groups in training datasets, and chosen model structures and optimization methods. Our paper proposes a novel approach to speech processing that can resolve the gender bias problem by eliminating the gender parameter. Therefore, we devised a system that transforms the input sound (speech of a person) into a neutralized voice to the point where the gender of the speaker becomes indistinguishable by both humans and AI. Wav2Vec based network has been utilised to conduct speech gender recognition to validate the main claim of this research work, which is the neutralisation of gender from the speech. Such a system can be used as a batch pre-processing layer for training models, thus making associated gender bias irrelevant. Further, such a system can also find its application where speaker gender bias by humans is also prominent, as the listener will not be able to judge the gender from speech.

Abstract

Objective  Previous work categorized skull base chordoma (SBC) into three genetic risk groups based on 1p36 and homozygous 9p21(p16) deletions, accounting for a wide variability in prognosis (A = low-risk, B = intermediate-risk, C = high-risk). However, it remains unclear how these groups could guide management. Study Design  By integrating surgical outcome and adjuvant radiation (AdjXRT) information with genetic data on 152 tumors, we sought to develop an evidence-based management algorithm for SBC. Results  Gross total resections (GTRs) were associated with improved progression free survival (PFS) in all genetic groups. For Group C tumors, GTR and AdjXRT independently contributed to PFS (multivariate Cox proportional hazard ratio [HR] = 0.14, p  = 0.002, and HR = 0.40, p  = 0.047, respectively). For Group B tumors, AdjXRT improved outcomes only when GTR was not feasible (log-rank p  = 0.008), but not following GTR (log-rank p  = 0.54). However, 24 of 25 Group A tumors underwent GTR, and AdjXRT for these did not confer any benefit (log-Rank p  = 0.285). The high GTR rates in Group A could be explained by smaller tumor sizes (mean = 0.98cc/4.08cc/4.92cc for Group A/B/C, respectively, p  = 0.031) and lack of invasiveness. Group A tumors were also more frequently diagnosed in young people (p  = 0.002) as asymptomatic lesions (p  = 0.001), suggesting that they could be precursors to tumors in higher risk groups. Conclusion  Genotypic grouping by 1p36 and homozygous 9p21(p16) deletions can predict prognosis in SBC and guide management. GTR remains the cornerstone of SBC treatment and can be sufficient without AdjXRT in low and intermediate risk tumors. Abstract

Background The role of preoperative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy before bariatric surgery is still debated, and a consensus among the international scientific community is lacking. The aims of this study, conducted in three different geographic areas, were to analyze data regarding the pathological endoscopic findings and report their impact on the decision-making process and surgical management, in terms of delay in surgical operation, modification of the intended bariatric procedure, or contraindication to surgery. Methods This is a multicenter cross-sectional study using data obtained from three prospective databases. The preoperative endoscopic reports, patient demographics, Body Mass Index, type of surgery, and Helicobacter pylori status were collected. Endoscopic findings were categorized into four groups: (1) normal endoscopy, (2) abnormal findings not requiring a change in the surgical approach, (3) clinically important lesions that required a change in surgical management or further investigations or therapy prior to surgery, and (4) findings that contraindicated surgery. Results Between 2006 and 2020, data on 643 patients were analyzed. In all of the enrolled bariatric institutions, preoperative endoscopy was performed routinely. A total of 76.2% patients had normal and/or abnormal findings that did not required a change in surgical management; in 23.8% cases a change or a delay in surgical approach occurred. Helicobacter pylori infection was detected in 15.2% patients. No patient had an endoscopic finding contraindicating surgery. Conclusions The role of preoperative UGE is to identify a wide range of pathological findings in patients with obesity that could influence the therapeutic approach, including the choice of the proper bariatric procedure. Considering the anatomical modifications, the incidence of asymptomatic pathologies, and the risk of malignancy, we support the decision of performing preoperative endoscopy for all patients eligible for bariatric operation.
