27. The Corrosion Behaviour of Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg Parts Compared to Traditional Al Alloys.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing of metal parts in the motorsport industry is becoming a decisive technology for producing lightweight and rigid parts, with increasing applications as the costs decrease. Among the available metal alloys, AlSi10Mg is one of the most widely used. In this paper, the corrosion resistance of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg is compared with that of other traditionally manufactured aluminium alloys widespread in the automotive industry. Several potentially corrosive agents, typical of vehicle applications, were used: salty water, motor oil, suspension oil, cooling fluid and gasoline. Corrosion tests were conducted at both room temperature and 90 °C. The effects of heat and surface treatments were evaluated separately. The samples were visually inspected and weighed to evaluate the corrosion rate with the aid of SEM and EDS analysis. Additively manufactured AlSi10Mg generally showed better corrosion resistance in the stress-relieved condition as compared to the T6-treated state, with slightly better results for the polished samples. Motor oil, suspension oil, cooling fluid and gasoline did not significantly corrode the specimens, except for the T6-treated AlSi10Mg samples at 90 °C. Abstract

A model of land suitability analysis for irrigation with treated domestic wastewater is presented. The model integrates tools of Multi-Criteria Evaluation with Geographical Information Systems. Several criteria were selected to adapt the model to the conditions and characteristics of the case study. The adaptation process included field visits, a bibliographical review, and personal interviews with local actors and experts. Six constraints and 10 factors were selected and 3158 hectares suitable for the activity were identified. The areas were classified into three categories of aptitude, representing high fitness sites close to the current wastewater treatment plant. The developed tool allowed us to integrate different criteria to assess site suitability for wastewater reuse, with the advantage that the tool can be adapted to other regions and/or objectives.

Abstract

Public debt is a notable measure of economic and financial sustainability which encountered policy and scholarly interest in the international development ambients. This paper investigates the major drivers of public debt growth in 184 countries. The underlying cross-country survey is conducted on the basis of the improved compilation of datasets on the central government debt for 2013. The study finds that oil abundance, economic growth rate, the share of mineral rent in the total revenue, interest rate payments for foreign borrowings, and being a developing country have a statistically significant impact on the growth of the public debt. In contrast, defence spending, unemployment rate, and inflation rate do not have a statistically significant positive impact on the public debt rate.

Abstract

Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had a considerable impact on the health and socio-economic fabric of Italy. The effective reproduction number Rt is one of the most representative indicators of the contagion status as it reports the number of new infections caused by an infected subject in a partially immunized population. The task of predicting Rt values forward in time is challenging and, historically, it has been addressed by exploiting compartmental models or statistical frameworks. The present study proposes an Artificial Neural Networks-based approach to predict the Rt temporal trend at a daily resolution. For each Italian region and autonomous province, 21 daily COVID-19 indicators were exploited for the 7-day ahead prediction of the Rt trend by means of different neural network architectures, i.e., Feed Forward, Mono-Dimensional Convolutional, and Long Short-Term Memory. Focusing on Lombardy, which is one of the most affected regions, the predictions proved to be very accurate, with a minimum Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) ranging from 0.035 at day t + 1 to 0.106 at day t + 7. Overall, the results show that it is possible to obtain accurate forecasts in Italy at a daily temporal resolution instead of the weekly resolution characterizing the official Rt data. 45. Energy poverty in African countries: An assessment of trends and policies

Abstract

Energy poverty, understood as the lack of access to adequate and sufficient energy services, constitutes a severe development problem for the African continent. Even though several policies and alleviation measures have been implemented in the last few decades, African countries still face multiple challenges. Therefore, this paper aims to identify these challenges related to energy poverty alleviation in Africa and the suitable solutions to address them. Using a combination of mixed methods, namely a bibliometric analysis and a survey of involved actors, the study identifies the current constraints, obstacles and measures to address the problem in African countries. Findings point out to governance-related issues, including corruption and poor policy implementation, as the most indicated reasons for energy poverty in Africa, more than technological, financial, and policy issues. The results also confirm the fact that energy poverty has various roots and addressing it needs to take into account challenges related to outdated infrastructure, limited accessibility, and high prices. Moreover, there is often a lack of awareness about the benefits of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient practices, which suggests research in this field is also needed. The novelty of this study resides in the fact that it reviews the literature on the topic, describes its variables associated with the problem, and presents the views and perspectives from people familiar with the topic. The insights from this research can inform policymakers and infrastructure planners, helping them to prioritise investments and design interventions that address the root causes of energy poverty and its various manifestations.
