Abstract

In 2018, the Greenland Telescope (GLT) started scientific observation in Greenland. Since then, we have completed several significant improvements and added new capabilities to the telescope system. 2. A study of the optimization problem on the combination of sectionalizing switches in power grid with quantum annealing

Abstract

From the perspective of global warming, efficiency improvement of power grids is a pressing issue. Power grids have many switching devices to control the flow of electricity. Since there is a slight resistance in the wires and power consumption is proportional to the square of the current, the value of power loss on the wires changes depending on the combination of switch values that change the supply path of the current. The total number of switch combinations increases exponentially with the number of switches, and various algorithms have been studied to find the optimal combination of switch values. We propose a method to capture the switch combination problem in power grids as quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) and derive an evaluation function to solve it using quantum annealing. The result is registered as a patent P6736787 at Japanese patent office.

Abstract

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Abstract

Tuberculosis is one of the most common infections worldwide. It has been associated with some hematologic disorders; however, pure red cell aplasia or autoimmune hemolytic anemia is rarely reported. We describe the case of a 68-year-old woman with pulmonary tuberculosis accompanied by pure red cell aplasia and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. These hematologic disorders were improved by treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. This case suggests that physicians should consider the possibility of tuberculosis as a cause of pure red cell aplasia.

Abstract

Nonepisodic angioedema with eosinophilia (NEAE) is characterised by a single episode of angioedema localised to the extremities and peripheral eosinophilia. While NEAE can develop in response to infection or vaccination, NEAE associated with acute parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection is rare. We describe the case of a young woman with NEAE that developed during acute B19V infection. She presented with 1-week history of pruritus and polyarthralgia in the extremities, followed by the development of peripheral oedema, and was positive for anti-B19V IgM antibody. Her arthralgia improved within 2 weeks without any specific intervention; however, the oedema and pruritic erythema persisted and the peripheral eosinophil count increased. A short course of prednisolone therapy for suspected NEAE alleviated the symptoms, which have not recurred for more than 2 years. Abstract

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) commonly causes a variety of infections in older individuals. However, respiratory infections are uncommon. We present the case of an older man with empyema due to SDSE subsequently to bacteraemia. He presented with a 1-day history of fever and laboratory findings revealed an increased white blood cell count and C- reactive protein (CRP) level. Chest CT revealed no infiltration and no pleural effusion. SDSE was detected in the blood cultures. Primary bacteraemia was suspected and antibiotic administration was initiated; however, 2 days later, his right breath sound diminished, and chest radiography revealed right pleural effusion. Thoracentesis yielded cloudy fluid with frank pus; thus, he was diagnosed with empyema due to SDSE, and a drainage tube was placed. Thereafter, his fever improved, and his CRP level decreased.
