This study introduces Multi-dimensional Disparity Index (MDI) to measure multi-form of disparity in different level of governments referencing Nepal. The measurement scale of MDI was developed by adopting Santos and Alkire's (2011) approaches. A wide range of thematic experts was consulted, employing the Semi-Delphi approach to determine its dimensions and indicators. The MDI in this study includes six dimensions and 34 indicators composited with dimension-wise indices like Economy Disparity Index [ECODI], Educational Disparity Index [EDUDI], Health Disparity Index [HDI], Geography and Climatic Vulnerability Index [GCVI], Living Standard Disparity Index [LSDI], and Demography Disparity Index [DDI]. Overall, the study revealed the extent of multi-dimensional disparity across three tiers of government in Nepal. More specifically, Nepal scored 0.388 MDI value. Karnali and Bagmati provinces are accounted as the highest and least deprived. This study contributes essential knowledge, particularly in exploring the dimensions and their indicators and develops an approach to measure multi-dimensional disparities. Most existing approaches for assessing disparities are mono-dimensional and measure the disparities in a single aspect. In this context, MDI provides a broader approach to consider multiple dimensions and measures multiple aspects in a country like Nepal, where disparity manifests at multiple levels. Hybrid surfaces with spatial wettability control are key for wider applicability in microfluidics, water harvesting, and inkjet printing. The patterned wettable surface is limited in its use on a broad scale due to the technological challenges of applying it to curved surfaces. In this study, we explore and demonstrate a desilanization technique to pattern hydrophilic spots on a superhydrophobic background. A simple chemical etching technique followed by functionalization with a low-surface-energy polymer yielded superhydrophobicity with contact angle of 178° ± 1° and sliding angle < 3° on Al5052. Further, surface processing by fluorine-free desilanization for 5 min yielded hydrophilicity with contact angle of ~ 20° ± 1°. To ensure the suitability of this technique in microfluidics, a microchannel surface with 300 µm channel width has been fabricated. Furthermore, the present study demonstrates the efficiency of simple wettability patterning on curved surfaces like Al cups and hollow pipes. Saline wastewater pollution is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. The present study focused on the development of a dual-chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC) treating saline wastewater at the anode. Halophilic exo-electrogenic bacteria enriched from seawater (Arabian Sea, Mumbai, India) were used in the anodic chamber of the MFC. Denitrification using denitrifying bacteria was employed in the cathodic chamber. The maximum power density was significantly increased from 96.77 mW/m2 to 162.09 mW/m2 with a rise in NaCl concentration from 20 to 40 g/L. Nitrate removal in the cathode chamber increased from 80 ± 3% to 89 ± 3.2% with increase in salt concentration from 20 g/L to 40 g/L and concomitantly COD removal in the anode chamber increased from 76 ± 3.8% to 83 ± 4%. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis revealed higher electrochemical activity at 40 g/L salt concentration. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis exhibited that charge transfer and solution resistances were lower when the salinity was increased. Microbial community analysis revealed the presence of Clostridium, Shewanella, and Bacillus as the most abundant genera in the anodic chamber. This study demonstrated the dual applicability of the system targeted for removal of organics from saline wastewater and nitrate removal from contaminated wastewater accompanied by power generation from the MFC. Early marriage is one of the major traditional practices that affects the life of both boys and girls in many different ways. In this context, this research assessed the prevalence of early marriage and derived its underlying causes. Adopting a mixed methods approach, first, the study surveyed a sample of 1350 households of Nepal in which at least a marriage took place within the five years before the survey. Following a survey, secondly, the study explored 30 unique cases of early marriage, and ten among them were studied in more depth through face-to-face interviews. Logistic regression was applied to determine the factors that could influence the prevalence of early marriage. It was then followed by an analysis of the qualitative data. The research findings demonstrate that there is a high prevalence of early marriage (49.6%) among households within Nepal; nevertheless, the overall trend of early marriage is noted at a decreasing trend over the years. Undoubtedly, factors such as the level of education of the family members, the gender of the head of the household, and religion, influence the predisposition to early marriage within Nepal. Early marriage is undeniably a subjective phenomenon; however, such subjectivity is shaped by the socio-economic situation, as well as individual and family values. Thus, among others, the study implied that improving the strategies that promote higher formal schooling could reduce the prevalence of early marriage and thereby result in associated beneficial welfare effects in Nepal. Microbes have been confirmed to play key role in biogeochemistry of antimony. However, the impact of indigenous bacteria (from active mines) on the behavior of dissolved antimony remained poorly understood. In current study, the hyper antimony-resistant strain, Achromobacter sp. 25-M, isolated from the world largest antimony deposit, Xikuangshan antimony deposit, was evaluated for its role in dissolved Sb(V) and Sb(III) precipitation and removal. Despite of the high resistance to Sb(III) (up to 50 mM), the facultative alkaliphile, 25-M was not capable of Sb(III) oxidation. Meanwhile 25-M can produce high amount of exopolymeric substance (EPS) with the presence of Sb, which prompted us to investigate the potential role of EPS in the precipitation and removal of Sb. To this end, 2 mM of Sb(III) and Sb(V) were added into the experimental systems with and without 25-M to discern the interaction mechanism between microbe and antimony. After 96 hrs' incubation, 88% [1.73 mM (210 mg/L)] of dissolved Sb(V) and 80% [1.57 mM (190 mg/L)] of dissolved Sb(III) were removed. X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of valentinite (Sb 2 O 3) in Sb(III) amended system and a solitary Sb(V) mineral mopungite [NaSb(OH) 6 ] in Sb(V) amended group with microbes. Conversely, no precipitate was detected in abiotic systems. Morphologically valentinite was bowtie and mopungite was pseudo-cubic as indicated by scanning electronic microscopy. EPS was subjected to fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis. FT-IR analysis suggested that –OH and –COO groups were responsible for the complexation and ligand exchange with Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively. Additionally, the C–H group and N–H group could be involved in π-π interaction and chelation with Sb species. All these interactions between Sb and functional groups in EPS may subsequently favore the formation of valentinite and mopungite. Collectively, current results suggested that EPS play fundamental role in bioprecipitation of Sb, which offered a new strategy in Sb bioremediation. In the present work, fluid–thermal–structural interaction analyses of a thin pre-heated and pre-buckled stiffened panel subjected to high-speed flow from Mach 3 to Mach 6 are performed and its aerothermoelastic characteristics are investigated. A finite element method-based nonlinear transient thermoelastic solver is strongly coupled with a finite volume method-based Navier–Stokes fluid flow solver for the calculation of aerodynamic loadings. A recent experimental test case is considered for validation, and further detailed analyses are performed for various total pressure, total temperature and Reynolds number conditions. Also, the effect of Mach number on the aerodynamic, structural and flow field characteristics is investigated using aerothermoelastic analyses and reported. Obtained simulation results show good agreement with the experimental results of the literature. It is observed that the stiffened panel continues to deform in the pre-buckled mode with a significant increase in deformation, stresses and total energy beyond Mach 3 because of severe aerodynamic heating. It is also observed that the effect of the cross rib to improve the aerothermoelastic performance is significantly reduced with increasing Mach number. The present results provide insights into the aerothermoelastic characteristics of thin panels and have implications for the design of aircraft for high supersonic and hypersonic flows. Background: Evidence suggests a possible link between diabetes and gastric cancer risk, but the findings remain inconclusive, with limited studies in the Asian population. We aimed to assess the impact of diabetes and diabetes duration on the development of gastric cancer overall, by anatomical and histological subtypes. Methods: A pooled analysis was conducted using 12 prospective studies included in the Asia Cohort Consortium. Among 558 981 participants (median age 52), after a median follow‐up of 14.9 years and 10.5 years, 8556 incident primary gastric cancers and 8058 gastric cancer deaths occurred, respectively. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate study‐specific hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and pooled using random‐effects meta‐analyses. Results: Diabetes was associated with an increased incidence of overall gastric cancer (HR 1.15, 95% CI 1.06–1.25). The risk association did not differ significantly by sex (women vs men: HR 1.31, 95% CI 1.07–1.60 vs 1.12, 1.01–1.23), anatomical subsites (noncardia vs cardia: 1.14, 1.02–1.28 vs 1.17, 0.77–1.78) and histological subtypes (intestinal vs diffuse: 1.22, 1.02–1.46 vs 1.00, 0.62–1.61). Gastric cancer risk increased significantly during the first decade following diabetes diagnosis (HR 4.70, 95% CI 3.77–5.86), and decreased with time (nonlinear p <.01). Positive associations between diabetes and gastric cancer mortality were observed (HR 1.15, 95% CI 1.03–1.28) but attenuated after a 2‐year time lag. Conclusion: Diabetes was associated with an increased gastric cancer incidence regardless of sex, anatomical subsite, or subtypes of gastric cancer. Cancer has been viewed as one of the deadliest diseases worldwide. Among various types of cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. Methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase 2 (MTHFD2) is a promising druggable target and is overexpressed in cancerous cells, like, breast cancer. We conducted structure-based modeling on the allosteric site of the enzyme. Targeting the allosteric site avoids the problem of drug resistance. Pharmacophore modeling, molecular docking, HYDE assessment, drug-likeness, ADMET predictions, simulations, and free-energy calculations were performed. The RMSD, RMSF, RoG, SASA, and Hydrogen-bonding studies showed that seven candidates displayed stable behaviour. As per the literature, average superimposed simulated structures revealed a similar protein conformational change in the αEʹ-βfʹ loop, causing its displacement away from the allosteric site. The MM-PBSA showed tight binding of six compounds with the allosteric pocket. The effect of inhibitors interacting in the allosteric site causes a decrease in the binding energy of J49 (active-site inhibitor), suggesting the effect of allosteric binding. The PCA and FEL analysis revealed the significance of the docked compounds in the stable behaviour of the complexes. Asian American individuals make up the fastest growing racial and ethnic group in the United States. Despite the substantial variability that exists in type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk among the different subgroups of Asian Americans, the current literature, when available, often fails to examine these subgroups individually. The purpose of this scientific statement is to summarize the latest disaggregated data, when possible, on Asian American demographics, prevalence, biological mechanisms, genetics, health behaviors, acculturation and lifestyle interventions, pharmacological therapy, complementary alternative interventions, and their impact on type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. On the basis of available evidence to date, we noted that the prevalences of type 2 diabetes and stroke mortality are higher in all Asian American subgroups compared with non-Hispanic White adults. Data also showed that atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk is highest among South Asian and Filipino adults but lowest among Chinese, Japanese, and Korean adults. This scientific statement discusses the biological pathway of type 2 diabetes and the possible role of genetics in type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease among Asian American adults. Challenges to provide evidence-based recommendations included the limited data on Asian American adults in risk prediction models, national surveillance surveys, and clinical trials, leading to significant research disparities in this population. The large disparity within this population is a call for action to the public health and clinical health care community, for whom opportunities for the inclusion of the Asian American subgroups should be a priority. Future studies of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk in Asian American adults need to be adequately powered, to incorporate multiple Asian ancestries, and to include multigenerational cohorts. With advances in epidemiology and data analysis and the availability of larger, representative cohorts, furthering refining the Pooled Cohort Equations, in addition to enhancers, would allow better risk estimation in segments of the population. Last, this scientific statement provides individual- and community-level intervention suggestions for health care professionals who interact with the Asian American population. Community-wide mask wearing may contribute to the control of COVID-19 by reducing the amount of emission of infected saliva and respiratory droplets from individuals with subclinical or mild COVID-19. In this work, a brief review is presented on face masks and related things. First, the size of microorganisms in relation to PM2.5 and PM10 is given for an approximate estimate of the sizes of objects that needs to be filtered. In continuation, the principles of filtration of objects by the network of fibers (woven, non-woven, knitted, etc.) are given. Common fibers used for making face mask is presented along with various fabric structure and their manufacturing. Additionally, advancements like the treatment of fibers in terms of coated fabrics, nano-particle finishes, and green synthesized nano-particle coatings have been explained in view of their anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. The classification of the face masks based on their fabric make-up has been given which has been extended to classification based on the barrier properties and various efficiencies of the face masks. The characterization of face masks like particle filtration efficiency, bacterial filtration efficiency, breathing resistance, flash resistance, and flame resistance are also included. As a futuristic approach an attempt has been made in this study to improve the compatibility between reinforcement and polymer matrix in composites by various chemical treatments. The adhesion of these can be achieved by modifying the surface using the chemical treatments. The general appearance of the Agave Americana fibers which underwent benzoylation was rated to be good in visual evaluation. The chemical treatments increased lignin content with 31.3% on benzoylation but decreased by both acetylation and alkylation treatments with 20.08% and 0.95% respectively. Moisture content was decreased in the fiber samples by benzylation and water absorption property decreased on acetylation and alkylation which would assist in fiber matrix compatibility. The breaking strength increased on benzoylation, and elongation increased on alkylation. Among the three chemical treatments the maximum degradation of fibers occurred at the highest temperature of 390°C with mass loss of 98.2% by benzoylation. Thermal stability improved in all the chemical treated fiber samples. Morphological analysis exhibited the removal of gummy substances and had improved roughness on the surface of fibers. The tri-layer knitted fabrics created for the aim of active sportswear have been enhanced with the help of microdenier filament polyester yarn, spun polyester yarn, polypropylene, and cotton in this study. These developed trilayer knitted fabrics are then examined for the thermal comfort properties. The results evidently showed that Microdenier Polyester/Microdenier Polyester/Cotton tri-layer knitted fabrics combination shows exceptionally appreciable thermal comfort properties due to their structural factors such as filamentous nature, lesser thickness, low areal density, and lesser bulkiness. The effect of fiber chosen also plays a crucial part with respect to the thermal comfort properties of tri-layer fabrics developed. Samples such as Microdenier Polyester/Polypropylene/Cotton, Polypropylene/Microdenier Polyester/Cotton also performed better next to that of the Microdenier Polyester/Microdenier Polyester/Cotton combination because polypropylene also possesses a good wicking characteristic. A poor thermal behavior was found in the Microdenier Polyester/Cotton/Polypropylene sample because of the reasons such as protruding fibers of cotton, increased thickness, high areal density, etc. Also on comparing between the filament and the spun yarn, the filament yarn is highly recommended due to its appreciable behavior. The ability to transport and evaporate moisture quickly and effectively is a very essential and expected property of a fabric chosen for the clothing purposes. The present study analyzed the moisture management properties of four different natural and manmade cellulosic fibers, its blends and by varying three different knitted structures using moisture management tester. The result reveals that the modal fiber wicks and spreads quickly and it requires an average 50% lesser time than other fiber samples. Among the three structures, single jersey fabrics showed excellent behavior of transportation of moisture through its surface. Single jersey modal fabric was rated as superior moisture management fabric, which can be recommended for the applications such as sportswear, where high moisture management properties with greater comfort are demanded. The balancing factor of apoptosis, survival, inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers may determine the clinico-radiological severity and death in the patients with tuberculous meningitis (TBM). We report the relationship of death [caspase-3, malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interleukin 6 (IL6)] and survival biomarkers [X-linked inhibitory apoptotic protein (XIAP), IL10, glutathione (GSH) and catalase] in TBM, and its role in determining disease severity and death. The diagnosis of TBM was based on clinical, MRI and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings. Their clinical and MRI findings were noted. The severity of TBM was categorized as stages I to III. Serum and CSF caspase-3 and XIAP were measured by ELISA, and TNFα, IL6 and IL10 gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells using RT-PCR (reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction). Plasma MDA, GSH and catalase were measured by spectrophotometer. There were 40 patients with TBM whose mean age was 31.6 years and 50% were females. TBM patients had higher expression of death (caspase-3, TNFα, IL6, and MDA) and suppression of survival biomarkers (XIAP, catalase and GSH) compared to the healthy controls. Caspase-3 positively correlated with TNFα, IL6 and MDA, and negatively with XIAP, GSH and catalase. Patients with longer duration of illness and definite TBM had higher expression of caspase-3. Patients who died has higher expression of caspase-3 and suppression of XIAP compared to those who survived. Background: The association between body mass index (BMI) and oesophageal cancer (OC) has been consistently negative among Asians, whereas different associations based on histological OC subtypes have been observed in Europeans and North Americans. We examined the association between BMI and OC mortality in the Asia Cohort Consortium.Methods: We performed a pooled analysis to evaluate the association between BMI and OC mortality among 842 630 Asians from 18 cohort studies. Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs.Results: A wide J-shaped association between BMI and overall OC mortality was observed. The OC mortality risk was increased for underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2: HR = 2.20, 95% CI 1.80-2.70) and extreme obesity (BMI ≥35 kg/m2: HR = 4.38, 95% CI 2.25-8.52) relative to the reference BMI (23-25 kg/m2). This association pattern was confirmed by several alternative analyses based on OC incidence and meta-analysis. A similar wide J-shaped association was observed in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Smoking and alcohol synergistically increased the OC mortality risk in underweight participants (HR = 6.96, 95% CI 4.54-10.67) relative to that in reference BMI participants not exposed to smoking and alcohol.Conclusion: Extreme obesity and being underweight were associated with an OC mortality risk among Asians. OC mortality and BMI formed a wide J-shaped association mirrored by OSCC mortality. Although the effect of BMI on OSCC and oesophageal adenocarcinoma mortality can be different in Asians, further research based on a large case-control study is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to see how different treatments affect the low-stress mechanical properties of micro-denier polyester/cotton (MDP/C—65/35) fabrics. This blend was chosen for the study because it is the most popular blend used in polyester/cotton blended material. The results of fabric properties treated with sericin revealed that fabrics treated with sericin and glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent had higher bending rigidity, regardless of how it was tested. Concerning the blend fabrics, it was noticed that there was deterioration in tensile resilience following sericin treatment. Shear rigidity, accompanied by shear hysteresis, showed an increase in sericin-treated fabrics. Compression properties were affected by the treatment, and in general, the fabric suffered deterioration in those the samples were hard. Surface properties such as coefficient of friction, mean deviation of friction and mean deviation of surface contour were found to be higher than those of the control and sericin-treated fabrics in a few cases. Background: Little is known about the time course of mortality reduction following smoking cessation in Asians who have smoking behaviours distinct from their Western counterparts. We evaluated the level of reduction in all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and lung cancer mortality by years since quitting smoking, in Asia.Methods: Using Cox regression, we analysed individual participant data (n = 709 151) from 16 prospective cohorts conducted in China, Japan, Korea/Singapore, and India/Bangladesh, separately by cohorts. Cohort-specific hazard ratios (HRs) were combined using a random-effects meta-analysis.Results: During a mean follow-up of 12.0 years, 108 287 deaths were ascertained-35 658 from CVD and 7546 from lung cancer. Among Asian men, a dose-response relationship of risk reduction in deaths from all causes, CVD and lung cancer was observed with an increase in years after smoking cessation. Compared with never smokers, however, all-cause and CVD mortality among former smokers remained elevated 10-14 years after quitting [multivariable-adjusted HR (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25 (1.13-1.37) and 1.20 (1.02-1.41), respectively]. Lung cancer mortality stayed almost 2-fold higher than among never smokers 15-19 years after smoking cessation [1.97 (1.41-2.73)], particularly among former heavy smokers [2.62 (1.71-4.00)]. Women who quitted for ≥5 years retained a significantly elevated mortality from all causes, CVD and lung cancer. Overall patterns of the cessation-mortality associations were similar across countries.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that adverse effects of tobacco smoking persist for an extended time period, even for more than two decades, which is beyond the time windows defined in current clinical guidelines for risk assessment of lung cancer and CVD. Objective: The aim of the study was to ascertain the effect of nasal polyposis on cardiac functions.Material and Methods: A prospective randomized interventional open-label endpoint-controlled study was conducted in an academic tertiary care hospital. Thirty-one patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis were enrolled and administered fluticasone furoate nasal spray for 3 weeks before randomly segregation into surgical or medical group. The treatment continued for 3 months in both groups. The SNOT-22 (Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22) score, polyp grade, and right ventricular and pulmonary arterial functions were recorded in both groups before and after 3 months of the intervention.Results: Both groups had significant improvement in SNOT-22 scores after 3 months of intervention. Both groups showed improvement in cardiac functions, but statistical significance was found only in subjects who underwent surgery.Conclusion: Nasal polyp affects cardiac functions, and this needs further evaluation and research through studies on large samples. Understanding the spatial spreading patterns of plant-available sulphur (S) (AS) and plant-available micronutrients (available zinc (AZn), available iron (AFe), available copper (ACu), available manganese (AMn) and available boron (AB)) in soils, especially in coastal agricultural soils subjected to various natural and anthropogenic activities, is vital for sustainable crop production by adopting site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) strategies. We studied the spatial distribution patterns of AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB in cultivated soils of coastal districts of India using geostatistical approaches. Altogether 39,097 soil samples from surface (0 to 15 cm depth) layers were gathered from farm lands of 68 coastal districts. The analysis of soil samples was carried out for soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC) and AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB. Soil pH, EC and SOC varied from 3.70 to 9.90, 0.01 to 7.45 dS m-1 and 0.02 to 3.74%, respectively. The concentrations of AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB varied widely in the study area with their corresponding mean values were 37.4±29.4, 1.50±1.53, 27.9±35.1, 2.14±1.74, 16.9±18.4 and 1.34±1.52 mg kg-1, respectively. The coefficient of variation values of analyzed soil parameters varied from 14.6 to 126%. The concentrations of AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB were negatively and significantly correlated with soil pH and positively and significantly correlated with SOC. The geostatistical analysis indicated stable, Gaussian and exponential best-fit semivariogram models with moderate to strong spatial dependence for available nutrients. The generated spatial spreading maps revealed different distribution patterns for AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB. There were variations in spatial spreading patterns of AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB in east- and west-coastal area. About 62, 35, 12, 0.4, 23 and 45% of the study area had deficiency of AS, AZn, AFe, ACu, AMn, and AB, respectively. The spatial spreading maps will be highly useful for SSNM in the cultivated coastal soils of the country. The 3-D matrix scale ion-exchange mechanism was explored for high-capacity cadmium (Cd) removal using bone chars (BC) chunks (1–2 mm) made at 500 °C (500BC) and 700 °C (700BC) in aqueous solutions. The Cd incorporation into the carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp) mineral of BC was examined using a set of synchrotron-based techniques. The Cd removal from solution and incorporation into mineral lattice were higher in 500BC than 700BC, and the diffusion depth was modulated by the initial Cd concentration and charring temperature. A higher carbonate level of BC, more pre-leached Ca sites, and external phosphorus input enhanced Cd removal. The 500BC showed a higher CO 3 2-/PO 4 3- ratio and specific surface area (SSA) than the 700BC, providing more vacant sites by dissolution of Ca2+. In situ observations revealed the refilling of sub-micron pore space in the mineral matrix because of Cd incorporation.The X-ray nanodiffraction (XND) analyses revealed that Cd was mainly removed from water by incorporation into the mineral lattice of 500BC via ion exchange, rather than surface sorption and precipitation, and the mineral phase was transformed from hydroxyapatite (HAp) to cadmium hydroxyapatite (Cd-HAp). The Rietveld's refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data resolved up to 91% of the crystal displacement of Ca2+ by Cd2+. The specific phase and stoichiometry of the new Cd-HAp mineral was dependent on the level of ion exchange. This mechanistic study confirmed that 3-D ion exchange was the most important path for heavy metal removal from aqueous solution and immobilization in BC mineral matrix, and put forward a novel and sustainable remediation strategy for Cd removal in wastewater and soil clean-up. Background: Previous research in high-income countries (HICs) has shown that smokers reduce their cognitive dissonance through two types of justifications over time: risk minimizing and functional beliefs. To date, however, the relationship between these justifications and smoking behaviors over time has limited evidence from low- and middle-income countries. This study examines these of justifications and their relation to quitting behavior and intentions among smoking tobacco users in India.Methods: The data are from the Tobacco Control Policy (TCP) India Survey, a prospective cohort of nationally representative sample of tobacco users. The respondents include smoked tobacco (cigarettes and bidi) users (n = 1112) who participated in both Wave 1 (W1; 2010-2011) and Wave 2 (W2; 2012-2013) surveys. Key measures include questions about psychosocial beliefs such as functional beliefs (e.g., smoking calms you down when you are stressed or upset) and risk-minimizing beliefs (e.g., the medical evidence that smoking is harmful is exaggerated) and quitting behavior and intentions at Wave 2.Findings: Of the 1112 smokers at W1, 78 (7.0%) had quit and 86 (7.8%) had intentions to quit at W2. Compared to W1, there was a significant increase in functional beliefs at W2 among smokers who transitioned to mixed use (using both smoking and smokeless tobacco) and a significant decrease among those who quit. At W2, smokers who quit held significantly lower levels of functional beliefs, than continuing smokers, and mixed users ((M = 2.96, 3.30, and 3.93, respectively, p < .05). In contrast, risk-minimizing beliefs did not change significantly between the two waves. Additionally, higher income and lower functional beliefs were significant predictors of quitting behavior at W2.Conclusion: These results suggest that smokers in India exhibit similar patterns of dissonance reduction as reported in studies from HICs: smokers who quit reduced their smoking justifications in the form of functional beliefs, not risk-minimizing beliefs. Smokers' beliefs change in concordance with their smoking behavior and functional beliefs tend to play a significant role as compared to risk-minimizing beliefs. DFT/TD-DFT methods were used to determine the fluoride anion sensing mechanism of 3′,6′-Bis(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)spiro[benzo[f]chromene3,9′ffuorene], abbreviated as SP. The description of ring opening in the ground state of SP molecule and its isomerization in open form is presented. It was revealed from the study that in the ground state, SP is the most stable form in contrast with the isomer obtained in the open form. To initiate the ring opening, at first, the fluoride ion attacks as a nucleophile to de-silylate the SP molecule. This attack of fluoride ion may induce Cspiro-O bond cleavage leading to the formation of two anionic species, i.e., MC-D1 and MC-D2 respectively (MC is merocyanin). The mono-de-silylation process was endogenic, which was followed by the ring opening process. Furthermore, the orthogonal geometry of probe SP does not show ICT character, whereas, MC-D1 and MC-D2 displayed ICT character owing to the formation of planar geometry along with an increase in conjugation. The fluorescence property of SP, and most stable isomers of open form (CT, MC-D1, and MC-D2) were predicted theoretically. The calculated emission spectra uncovered that SP may show fluorescence, which could be quenched in presence of fluoride anion.
