The paper examined the challenges of maintenance of paper based archival information materials and strategies for enhancement in academic libraries in South East, Nigeria which doubled as the objectives of the study. Descriptive survey research method was used for the study. The population consisted of 277 library staff in academic libraries of government owned institutions. Questionnaire and structured interview guide was used to collect data which was analyzed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to analyze data generated for the two research questions while ttest was used for the hypothesis. Real limits of numbers were used to determine the bench mark. The major findings of the study showed the challenges involved in maintenance of archival materials to include inadequate funding and tropical climate that breeds insects. The strategies involved in archival maintenance practices include: recruiting adequate personnel in libraries, provision of maintenance policies, adequate funding of libraries for proper maintenance of archives, proper control of insect by the use of insecticides and adequate training of maintenance personnel. The hypothesis tested revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean ratings between the male and female library staff in respect to strategies for maintenance practices of paper based archival paper materials in the academic libraries. The paper recommended that the library administrators should engage qualified and competent staff on the field of Library and Information Science and ICT to ensure adequate maintenance of archival materials in academic libraries. The Library of the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb keeps a particularly valuable collection of personal papers – personal documents, manuscripts and other archives created and collected by local musicians, conductors, music teachers and music historians during the performance of their duties. In many cases, those materials came into the Library’s possession as a part of private donations and legacies. Recently, the librarians at the Library of the Academy of Music have started to arrange and describe those materials according to the principles of archival arrangement and description, and so far the personal papers of Theo Tabaka, Ivan Pinkava, Petar Dumičić and Zinka Kunc (Milanov) have been processed. This paper reconstructs the history of the publications relating to the results of Captain Montagu Brownlow Parker's 1909–1911 excavations in Jerusalem, comprising the English and French versions of the book Underground Jerusalem by Père Louis-Hugues Vincent, and four articles by that same author appearing in the pages of Revue Biblique. The significant part played by the English translator, Theodore Andrea Cook, is shown, and as it transpires, he is the reason why archival materials relating to the Parker expedition eventually ended up in the Palestine Exploration Fund's archives. Importantly, an unpublished drawing by Vincent of an Iron Age stone toilet seat, which had been referred to by the excavators as the 'Throne of Solomon', was found among these archival materials. The paper investigates thirteen similar parallel stone toilet seats from the Iron Age II and examines what is known concerning issues of sanitation during that period in the Kingdom of Judah. This paper discusses the re-animation of a geography departmental collection through a study of the archives and map collection of the School of Geography, University of Nottingham. The discussion is situated within parallel examples of work on geographical archives and map collections, and wider debates on engagement with archival sources. The paper considers how a previously dormant collection has been re-animated in recent years, conveys the range of source material involved, and discusses the possibilities of digitisation. While archival user studies have largely focused on humanities (and adjacent) scholars, this paper focuses on anthropologists engaged in scientific research. Based on qualitative results from an open-ended survey, we investigate how science-based anthropologists perceive and use archives in their work. We ask: How are science-based anthropologists and archaeologists reusing archival data in their research? What difficulties or barriers do they encounter in reusing archival data in scientific contexts? What attitudes or understandings about archival research are held by science-based anthropologists and archaeologists? Our findings primarily add to the body of literature about user experience in archives and more broadly to the emerging literature on archival data reuse. Major findings include (1) barriers and gatekeeping legacies that impact archival research and the ability of researchers to reuse data and (2) mixed perceptions about archives among researchers. We also discuss suggestions made by these communities of practice, and the ways that barriers to archival data reuse may stem from a lack of knowledge about core archival and information infrastructures among researcher communities. Together, this research showcases possible (re)uses of important primary source data in archives among scientific communities but highlights that barriers to access and misperceptions create a gap in exploiting that potential. The safe storage and handling of plastic objects presents a pressing and often overlooked problem in many library and archival collections. Plastics are notoriously difficult to care for because they can deteriorate faster than other materials in archival collections. The so-called "malignant" plastics can also produce harmful degradation products that damage surrounding materials, including photographs and papers. Part of the issue is the myriad available tools for plastics identification, which can be both cumbersome and daunting. The other is that ideal storage environments for plastics recommended in the preservation literature are often difficult to achieve due to the accessibility needs and space constraints faced by many libraries and archives. This article introduces a current project at New York University Libraries that evaluates existing recommendations for the identification and housing of plastics, and provides guidelines for making scalable housing types that support user access. In 2005, a Swedish television documentary that revealed gross misconduct and abuse in Swedish children's homes led to a number of inquiries that culminated with the passing of the Redress Act. This act entitled everyone that had suffered from abuse in out-of-home care to 250,000 Swedish crowns (close to 25,000 Euros). However, only 42 percent of the Swedish claimants were granted the compensation, a very low number in international comparison. The starting point of this study is this—in many accounts failed—redress process. Why did Sweden, self-appointed moral superpower, produce such deviating results? This question is addressed by an inquiry into the Swedish scheme of redress, focusing on the role of archives and recordkeeping with particular focus on the concepts of total archives and politics of regret. This paper argues that it was impossible for the Swedish Board of Redress to make satisfactory assessments of redress claims, given the set criteria and the archival material on which they were required to base their decisions, and that it is a futile task to base the writing of individual life stories on official documentation. What are the institutional features that incentivize established powers to join rising powers' new institutions? Going beyond alliance versus rivalry, this paper develops a novel theory in answering this question. We argue that the established power must address two primary design issues: 1. how to navigate the control and burden-sharing trade-off and 2. how to limit the potential diffusion of power by rendering the new institution "complementary" to the existing order. To the extent that these issues are resolved in line with the established power's (EP's) preferences, the EP is more likely to join the rising powers' institutions. We support our theory with an in-depth case analysis of the Japanese-led Asian Development Bank, utilizing primarily archival materials. This paper presents an approach to designing editing workshops related to digital public history projects based on archival materials at institutions of higher learning. These events engage campus communities in the practice of public history and create opportunities for students interested in archives and digital humanities to develop professional skills. The model draws on the experiences of faculty, staff, and students who have contributed to Editing the Eartha M. M. White Collection, a pedagogically focused project that explores methods for the collaborative online publication of selected personal papers and correspondence of local African American leader Eartha M. M. White (1876-1974), held in the Special Collections of the Thomas G. Carpenter Library at the University of North Florida. This paper concerns the protection of the archive material which we can find in the Macedonian city archives proclaimed as authorized entities responsible for the preservation and protection of cultural heritage. The main topic was about the conventional and unconventional archive material, including the collection of music instruments as a tangible cultural heritage preserved in the Institute of folklore "Marko Cepenkov" in Skopje and about the mechanisms of its protection. In the mentioned archival fund, there is a lot of data saved on the old paper and on the older audio and video records, and some of the musical instruments from the institute collection are not in a good functional shape. So, all of these materials can be destroyed and decayed further and further due to conditions to which they are exposed and the time as a factor, and the main goal of this paper is to be an awakening call for the importance of these archival materials and that we should take all the measures and actions to preserve them in their appropriate digitalized form (for the old paper and audio/video recordings) and appropriate conservation of the musical instruments. Hoping to evoke in readers memories of their own encounters with the missing or illegible, this visual essay highlights materials from across the Archives that represent mysteries. There are texts that have stumped the Archives' crowdsourced attempts to transcribe them, photographs of unidentified people, and manuscripts that have been damaged, destroyed, or lost, such as torn out pages from an artist's diary or a letter consisting of only the postscript. One could regard these objects with melancholy, as representing gaps in knowledge that may never be bridged. They raise questions about the limits of any archive, and the necessary incompleteness of the work we do as scholars. However, by being irreducible to facts—by, we might say, not doing their job—I argue that indecipherable or incomprehensible archival materials may assert a hold on the researcher that legible materials do not. Ten early 16th century Athonite documents are preserved in the library of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem, in Codex Hierosolymitanus no. 370 of the Manuscript Collection of the Holy Sepulture (Panagios Taphos). This manuscript is a miscellany consisting of various texts. It was copied around the mid–16th century by the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Germanos, who added to it fragments deriving from older paper manuscripts. Today it consists of 481 folia, of which 114, 200–215, 328–331, 340, 341, 425–428, and 472–474 are blank. The copies of the 10 Athonite documents are scattered between ff. 154 and 378. Photographs of Codex no. 370 are freely accessible online in the site of the Library of Congress of the USA1. The existence of Athonite documents in this manuscript was first announced in 1891 by A. This paper will examine the self-styled public information comics Chronicle: The Archive and Museum Anthology and Archives and Memory, both published by the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies (SCCS) in 2018. The comics in question deal with notions of the archival in very different ways both conceptually and stylistically. The discussion will highlight the legal and social justice issues these comics raise while focusing on the complex relationship between archival materials and memory. It will additionally consider these in relation to the concept of public information comics and unpack what such comics do that goes beyond the mere communication of information. Objective. The author explains the notion of archival processes and material, showcases the catalogue of archival values, and deconstructs the relationship between archival material and act, history, identity, and other signifieds. The value of archival material directs the user's interpretation of various signifieds, creating chains of supplements and forming possibilities for usage, understanding, and accepting archival material. Approach/methodology/design. The author analyses the definition of archival material, appraisal, values of archival material, and related archival processing tasks. The author uses archival literature and dictionaries to analyse the appraisal, acquisition, arrangement, and description process. The author uses the literature of various disciplines and sciences, such as anthropology, archival science, deconstruction, linguistics, logic and semiotics, to analyse the notion of value and conduct deconstruction and semiotic analysis of archival material. Results. The author explains the archival appraisal process and the relationships with other processes in archives and defines and categorises the notion of the value of archival material. The paper also showcases the deconstruction of conceivable relationships of appraised archival material and its use and the mechanism of functioning of archival material as a semiotic sign. Originality/value. The originality of the paper consists of an additional reflection on archival terms related to appraisal, archival material and the interpretative potential that comes from its values for different uses and users. Archival materials are repeatedly consulted to settle disputes before the courts of law. The main purpose of the paper is to examine the use of archival materials in the ultimate settlement of the border dispute between Botswana and Namibia over the disputed ownership of the Sedudu/Kasikili Island. This paper took a qualitative approach where documentary review of archival materials and other documentary sources were used to answer the research questions. The findings indicate that archival materials in their various forms such as drawings, maps, plans, reports, scientific documents, and correspondence by colonial authorities played a significant role as evidence that informed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to legally settle the boundary dispute between Botswana and Namibia. This paper also established the need for archivists to preserve the reliability and authenticity of records over time for them to be trusted as evidence. The fact that the case was solved with access to archival materials among other evidence presented, is an indication of the importance of archives in the society. Although this paper contributes to literature on the role of archives in the resolution of boundary conflicts, it is limited in that the findings are restricted to a review of archival materials in the holdings of the Botswana National Archives and Records Service (BNARS) exclusive of archival materials from the National Archives of Namibia. This paper focuses on the documents kept in archive of Jenő Janovics, an artistic director in Hungary and Romania for 30 years. The rich archival materials, kept in Cluj, of this important public figure reflect the turbulent times of history of Hungarian Theater in Cluj in the first half of the 20th century. This article explores the process of making a documentary about Jill Craigie which drew, in particular, on the collection of her papers at the Women's Library and on documents belonging to Craigie and her family. Independent Miss Craigie (2021) seeks to examine the scope and synergies of film-making and politics in a career which encompassed independent production, journalism, broadcasting, television and writing. Our documentary aims to evoke the tensions between Craigie's own (rather diverse) accounts of her career, the evidence of it in her papers and in the contemporary reception of her work. This article about the making of the film provides space to reflect on how archival materials can be used to construct a narrative of a woman director's career. In doing so, it highlights the inevitable gaps and elisions in archival sources and, indeed, in the interpretation of Craigie's films and come to some conclusions about Craigie's disparaging attitude to her own work in later life. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of climate change on South Africa's Mpumalanga Provincial Archives (MPA) and related records management activities. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research approach/method was used to collect data from the source, including purposive sampling and expert knowledge solicited through semi-structured interviews. A review was undertaken to source climate data and related archival sector literature. Findings: Recent extreme weather events in Mpumalanga seem to bear out climate change projections. The current absence of relevant strategies and plans implies that the MPA and provincial departments are not yet prepared for emergencies. The lack of a plan, an implementation strategy and related training may increase the impact of disasters on the provincial archives' environment. Without disaster plans and robust preparedness, the question of how the MPA is going to preserve archives for future generations is raised. In addition, due to a lack of guidance for registry staff, appraisal is not allowing for identification and processing of archival materials, so combined with a lack of disaster management strategies and plans contributes to the loss of archives. Research limitations/implications: This research is limited to the MPA; however, the findings may be extended to other South Africa provincial archives and parts of the world experiencing similar issues. There is a need to conduct similar research on a larger scale so as to explore the impact of climate change in other provincial archives to provide a wider context of the problem within South Africa. Practical implications: When archivists accept holdings into their repositories, they take the responsibility for their archival custody. But, these efforts may come to nothing if the archives are lost. Disaster management is the key to the protection of the archives. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature on the impact of climate change on archives. The results achieved should be seen as a first step towards identification of the issue. Based on both archival material from the European colonial archives in Aix-en-Provence, Madrid, and London and documents held at the Archivo Nacional de la República de Cuba, this paper analyses court cases related to petitions submitted by enslaved people to foreign diplomacy in Cuba, exploring the entanglement between mobility in trans-imperial Caribbean space and the use of law by enslaved people in the Age of Abolition. Drawing mainly on legal sources, it emphasizes how slavery and freedom remain ambiguous and contested concepts in the shifting boundaries between free and unfree labor. (Im)mobility - understood both as the transition from one legal status to another and as migration - represented a practice to escape coercion and a tool of control, through which new forms of coercion emerged and were regulated. The Hammer Script Archive is held at De Montfort University in Leicester and was opened to researchers in 2012. Primary materials held in the Archive include screenplays, treatments, financial documentation, correspondence, posters, production stills and press books. This article will utilise specifically the material held in the Archive that relates to Hammer's unmade films. The archive currently holds files on exactly 100 unmade television and film projects, with 185 separate pieces of ephemera directly related to these unmade works. This article examines how archival materials on unmade or unreleased films not only provide valuable evidence for revisionist film histories but can also be repurposed as events and media that imaginatively reconstitute unrealised projects. While archives are valued by film historians for the contextual evidence that they provide, and are often the only sources of information about films that are lost, when it comes to films that never were, they hold potential beyond the circumstantial. Unmade films have also been used to frustrate and complicate existing methodologies. But here, papers on unmade films in the Hammer Script Archive provide the point of departure for an examination of the unproduced project Vampirella, which was developed in the mid-1970s, and its subsequent adaptation as a script read live in 2019. As such, documentation in the Archive will be used to provide the production contexts for the original unmade film from which the script was adapted, and then studied to see how these primary materials were repurposed in the subsequent publicly read script. By examining this public event and two other live readings of scripts adapted from unmade Hammer projects, this article will explore the appeal and cultural function of this phenomenon. In doing so it will pose questions about the scripts' status as adaptations (part-augmentations, part-simulacra?) and fan response (nostalgia for that which never was). There is a growing trend across the social sciences to engage with archives. Within human geography, this has stimulated a debate about the nature of archives, including moving from considering 'archive as source' to 'archive as subject.' We build on and extend this thinking, suggesting that an even more active appreciation of the dynamic nature of relationships between researchers, owners of records, and archival material is needed. This paper draws on an interdisciplinary study of voluntary action and welfare provision in England in the 1940s and 2010s to highlight how the different iterative processes involved in collaborative archival research are part of what we call co‐curation. Co‐curation involves the negotiated identification, selection, preparation, and interpretation of archival materials. This has implications for both research processes and outcomes. This paper takes inspiration from David Bayley's recognition that Commissions of Inquiry yield useful archival material for investigating the challenges for police accountability. Guided by his spirit of inquiry, this paper presents three recent Commissions of Inquiry in South Africa (the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry and the Inquiry into the events at Marikana; and the yet to be completed Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture) and considers how each have shed light on the organisational woes and policy conundrums confronting the police and policing in South Africa. In turn, these Commissions have yielded spaces for (re-)engaging issues relating to the structure, function and governance of the police. In doing so, the deliberations of these Commissions have in interesting ways interfaced with concerns raised in both public debates and scholarly analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Croatian archival regulations (Archives and Archival Institutions Act and Ordinance on the Management of Records Outside the Archival Institutions) prescribe the procedure of the verification of compatibility of rules, technologies and procedures for conversion of archival materials into digital form. The procedure is carried out by the Croatian State Archives as the central state archives in the Republic of Croatia. It concerns a complex procedure of verification of a specific IT system for digitization which requires acceptance and implementation of appropriate standards and norms from the public authorities, other bodies or individuals in order for digitized records to be transferred in a certain way to authorised archives and consequently ensure their long-term protection. The paper provides answers to several current issues from conformity check procedures that can help public authorities and other interested parties in reconciliation of business processes and preparing documentation necessary for obtaining a certificate of conformity. The article shows, on the example of Croatian newspapers in Australia and New Zealand, the possibilities of researching the publications of Croatian emigrants. The goal of the Croatian Emigrant Press project implemented at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, is explained. The method of creating bibliographies within the project (with views in ISBD and MARC 21 formats) is also explained, as is the research methodology, which includes searching library catalogues, community engagement (crowdsourcing) and searching archival materials. The role of archives as heritage institutions that are indispensable in the research of publications is especially explained. Examples are given of New Zealand and Australian newspapers for which the only surviving sources are archival ones. One New Zealand newspaper (Glas istine, The Voice of Truth) has not been preserved in any of its copies, but documents preserved in the New Zealand archives prove that they were published. A similar example is of an Australian newspaper (Svijetlo, The Light) for which a document was found which makes it clear that the person who wrote the document had the publication in his hands. Images of documents related to the research of Croatian newspapers are also presented in the paper. One of these documents is related to the implementation of censorship in Australia in the 1930s and indicates that it were the Croatian newspapers Iskra (The Sparkle) and Oganj (The Flame) that influenced the amendments to regulations in order to control press as effectively as possible. The importance of private archives and community archives within Croatian associations is pointed out, and new possibilities for researching Croatian publications in archives in countries where emigrated Croats live are also emphasized. ZIMPAPERS has begun a massive digitisation of newspaper stories and photographs, according to their subject, that it has been storing in the established archival facility. Newspapers from as far back as 1892 have been bound to create volumes of newspaper-bound books. Digitisation not only makes them more widely available, but it also has preservation benefits by eliminating or reducing physical handling of archives and photographs by users. The photographs are kept together with the original picture for every published picture and its story. The archival facility serves as a memory and knowledge hub for the organisation and its sister companies, providing journalists and other interested parties with a rich research base. The story-based filing system ensures that stories about the same subject are collected from the newspapers and filed. This sparked the idea of commercialising the knowledge housed in this special collection facility. This unique collection, which has the potential to account for historical events, has proven invaluable to journalists, students, researchers, and the general public. Aside from providing access, opening the facility to the public was a significant step toward monetising the collections, and the potential of the collections to generate some revenue/income for the organisation cannot be overstated. The organisation realised that by continuing to digitise its archives, it can benefit from infopreneurship, even though it has brought its own set of challenges, opportunities, and lessons. Gary Bass's The Blood Telegram narrates the historical and geopolitical backdrop to Bangladesh's war of national liberation, drawing on documents from U.S. and Indian archives, including the White House tapes, diplomatic cables, and papers of senior functionaries. Bass's research exposes the criminality of the Nixon Administration's tilt toward Pakistan Army's brutal repression of the Bengalis, and chronicles that, while the US diplomats in Dhaka, such as Consul General Archer Blood, were remitting real-time assessments of ongoing massacres, ethnic cleansing, and political repression to the State Department and the White House, the Nixon Administration was supporting General Yahya Khan's regime and Pakistan Army's terror campaign of repression in East Pakistan. He also chronicles the inner workings of the Indian political leaders, bureaucrats, and military officials, and the diplomatic maneuvers leading to the Indo--Soviet Treaty. However, Bass's coverage of ongoing developments in Bangladesh/East Pakistan during 1971 is limited and wanting, partly due to his lack of access to archival Bangladeshi materials and his unfamiliarity with the available materials in Bengali. The study looked into issues surrounding the custody of records considered be of timeless value to the University. The population of study were the administrative and library staff of the University. Purposive sampling was used to select the staff who handle the records at the University. Interviews and observation were the data collection instruments. Findings showed existence of multiple archives across the various departments, faculties and secretariat of the Vice-Chancellor and a lack of university-wide finding aids to accessing records among others. A policy on archiving, the establishment of a centralized archival unit, engagement of a professional archivist, adoption of an electronic media for archiving and promotion of archival material for teaching and learning were recommended for the consideration of the University. The article focuses on the 26th conference of the working group "Archiving of Documents from Digital Systems (AUdS)" held on March 21-22, 2023, in Mannheim, Germany. Topics include practical approaches to digital (long-term) archiving for smaller and medium-sized archives, with emphasis on collaboration, preparation for digital long-term archiving, and handling various types of digital archival material.

This study examines video games' depictions of archival architectures in levels and practices of interacting with archival material such as looting. By doing this, the article proposes a processual idea of proper archives and virtual counterparts, both determined by various moments of interplay, such as opening treasure chests, boxes, or cells. Archived artifacts, hidden in games to be discovered, lure players to begin interplay, and are a crucial part of the labyrinthic archival ecosystem. Examining video game archives enhances the perception of archival ecosystems from the interplay with institutional archives, and the archived material in general. When COVID-19 prevented scholars from traveling to libraries, archives, and museums, staff at those institutions devised creative strategies for providing remote access to their holdings. This article examines one such initiative launched by the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology in Kansas City, Missouri. The Library's prioritization of print over archival materials, experience fulfilling document delivery requests, and investments in digitization infrastructure facilitated the transition to a completely virtual fellowship program during the 2021–22 academic year. Although virtual fellowships could not replicate every aspect of in-person residencies, they nonetheless supplied scholars with much-needed funding, research materials, and membership in a scholarly community. On the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her son inherited the Crown of the United Kingdom and that of 14 other Commonwealth Realms, as well as the title of 'Head of the Commonwealth'. The complex network of relationships this entails is poorly understood by the public, the media and increasingly by policy-makers. Our ability to analyse how it has operated over the course of the Queen's 70 years on the throne has been impeded by the Palace's obsession with secrecy. This has led to the closure and redaction of a vast amount of archival material, some of it dating back to the 1950s. In the aftermath of the Hanslope Park disclosure and the release of the 'migrated archives,' the United Kingdom's (UK) Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) had to supply a reason for how it came to pass those tens of thousands of classified records documenting Britain's colonial administrations were stored in secret for half a century. Officially, the FCO responded that its own accidental neglect had resulted in the scandal. This article, by using archival materials released as part of the 'migrated archives' and research conducted at the Kenyan National Archive, argues that the contrary was true. In response to growing pressures from former colonies and international organisations, the FCO intentionally concealed 'embarrassing' colonial administrative files from public view as a strategy to preserve the UK's diplomatic standing and political prowess amidst the geopolitical shifts caused by decolonisation and the Cold War. The article describes this strategy in the context of colonial fragility, or the cosmetic interest in protecting the UK's reputation as a 'good' state, which in turn propagated harm along racialised lines by dislocating evidence of the colonial past. Ideas of transgression and transvaluation were central to Kenneth Burke's early writing and the development of his critical method of "perspective by incongruity." During the 1930s, Burke was concerned with the impact that art and criticism could have on the tumultuous Depression-era politics in which he was living. For him, language in general—and literature more specifically—can provide a vital corrective for a society trapped within its own misapplied terminologies. While Permanence and Change is typically considered to mark a shift in Kenneth Burke's interest from the socio-aesthetics of Counter-Statement to the critical inquiry of language itself, this paper argues that Burke's method of perspective by incongruity links the two works together as parts of a common project. Reading these works alongside archival material from the intervening period between their publications shows that Burke's initial concern with the radical potential of poetic invention evolved into a more general means of affecting social change. This study is a reflective piece that grew out of the Archival Kismet Conference in April of 2021. What happens when you find your "archival kismet"—the document that is essential to your research—and it is restricted? In conjunction with archival silences, how do these restrictions affect our ability to understand the past? I begin with these questions and use two case studies to challenge and complicate the practice of restricted access in archives. Using a dialogic approach, I provide a set of questions and considerations groups can use to begin to probe materials with archival restrictions. Purpose: The aim of the research was to create a site which could host an archive of moving image associated with the town of Fraserburgh in Scotland, but could also include other digital artefacts to support and enhance the narratives contained within the films. Elements of digital storytelling were utilised, and a purposely designed section, "behind the film", was included within the site which saw stories presented and supported with the use of archive newspaper clippings, photography and a series of reflective audio clips recorded for the research. Design/methodology/approach: "Fraserburgh on Film" is an online platform created for the purpose of collating digital heritage film from the communities situated in the corner of North East Scotland. The research adopted an ethnographic approach working within the community, with James Taylor and other contributors to collect and curate moving images associated with the town. Archival research then supplemented these films. A digital platform was then constructed, tested and launched as the archival repository for the materials collected. Findings: The research highlights the importance of having a close association with the community in question and provides details about the creation of the platform and framing it in the context of a vehicle for digital storytelling and participatory heritage. The article demonstrates how archive film should be gathered, edited and remastered for long-term preservation and access. Practical aspects such as video hosting, searchability, metadata are explored as are subsequent methods of dissemination and engagement. Practical implications: The research highlights a number of practical decisions which must be made when considering similar projects. These include gaining access to the moving images in the first place but also significant infrastructural issues around the creation, organisation and dissemination of an online digital repository. These lessons are transferable to other small community-based cultural and heritage organisations. Social implications: The archive has been very positively received in the community as an important repository for preserving community heritage and identity. High levels of public engagement have been demonstrated since its launch, which has led to new material being discovered. The archive has a wider cultural legacy across the North East of Scotland because of both the nature of the films and the widespread use of the Doric dialect. Originality/value: The originality lies in the distinctive amount of moving image (and oral history) collected by local historian, James Taylor and his willingness to allow his materials to be edited and repurposed to ensure their long-term survival. The lessons learnt in this project are transferable to other locations in terms of both collecting material, the creation of the hosting platform and in crowdsourcing background information. The crucial importance of working with community partners in digital heritage work is reinforced. The research affords practical illustrations of steps to be taken and factors to be considered. Municipal Libraries have a significant number of rare and valuable publications as well as unique archival material. Until recently, the rarity of this material imposed on its management a series of prohibitions that made research difficult. The adoption of digital technology in the field of Closed Collections has come to change the data and facilitate research, simulating it to a large extent with that of open access collections. The digitization and electronic cataloging of these books was deemed necessary, not only because it contributed to the substantial, albeit virtual, enrichment of the electronic catalog of the Municipal Libraries, but also because it digitally saved an extremely distressed printed material of maximum importance. Political scientists are increasingly integrating wargames into their research. Either by fielding original games or by leveraging archival wargame materials, researchers can study rare events or topics where evidence is difficult to observe. However, scholars have little guidance on how to apply this novel methodological approach to political science research. This article evaluates how political scientists can use wargames as a method of scholarly inquiry and sets out to establish a research agenda for wargaming in International Relations. We first differentiate wargames from other methodological approaches and highlight their ecological validity. We then chart out how researchers can build and run their own games or draw from archival wargames for theory development and testing. In doing so, we explain how researchers can navigate issues of recruitment, bias, validity, and generalizability when using wargames for research, and identify ways to evaluate the potential benefits and pitfalls of wargames as a tool of inquiry. The Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi (ICBSA) has just finished, together with the Università degli Studi di Siena and Università degli Studi di Siena per stranieri, to work on the project "Ti racconto in italiano" which focuses on providing different access points to audio resources collected between 1980's and 2000's by ICBSA itself, as part of its mission to document Italian audio and audiovisual culture. The main aim of the project is to create tools which will enable scholars of social history, art and literature to use these sources as well as providing original material for foreign students to exercise their knowledge of Italian. In order to facilitate access it has been necessary to create finding aids such as indexes and thesauri. For this purpose ICBSA has started a collaboration with the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze and the latter's Nuovo Soggettario. This is not the first case of a project by insititutes of the Italian Ministry of Culture comprising the use of the Nuovo Soggettario for the indexing of archival materials. Indeed, the Soprintendenza Archivistica e Bibliografica della Toscana has already worked in this direction a few years ago when treating the so-called Straw archives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
