The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher of the Year (TOY) award has been around since the 1990s; to date there are only 24 known APE TOYs. The TOY award was initially hosted by the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR) a subgroup of American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), but since 2013, the Society of Health and Physical Educators-America (SHAPE-America) sponsored the award. This paper provides a historical perspective of the APE TOY award and documents the most complete list of APE TOYs by year of award and state represented and will be followed with another article sharing and celebrating the biographical data highlighting each of the known APE TOYs.
