Computational Thinking (CT) is regarded as a crucial competency for all children in the 21st century. There are misconceptions about CT which confounds CT skills with programming skills. However, CT skills and programming skills are not the same. CT is a broader skillset of cognitive thinking that is integral to complex problem solving. Teaching and assessing CT should not only focus on computer programming. In this project, a new design-based learning (DBL) approach was proposed to improve elementary school students' CT. This approach not only included programming skills, but also integrated CT practices with authentic real-life contexts. Corresponding to recent conceptions of CT, we also assessed CT in a more comprehensive manner. A quasi-experiment study was carried out to assess how the intervention was associated with students' self-perceived CT skills using both quantitative and qualitative methods. In the treatment group, twenty-three fourth graders engaged in three curriculum units to create artifacts that solve specific real-world problems using LabPlus electronic kits and Scratch programming software. The control group took a traditional computer science class. Results revealed that students' self-perceived CT skills increased to a greater extent in the treatment group compared to the control group. In addition, we observed and interviewed three student cases in the treatment group to understand the potential learning effects of our new DBL approach. This study contributes to research in CT instruction, its application in STEM education in particular, and how it can be used in elementary level education in general.

Providing coaching to participants in inquiry-based online discussions contributes to developing cognitive presence (CP) and higher-order thinking. However, a primary issue limiting quality and timely coaching is instructors' lack of tools to efficiently identify CP phases in massive discussion transcripts and effectively assess learners' cognitive development. This study examined a computational approach integrating text mining and co-occurrence analysis for assessing CP and cognitive development in online discussions based on the community of inquiry (CoI) framework. First, text classifiers trained on different language models were evaluated for identifying and coding the CP phases. Second, epistemic network analysis (ENA) was employed to model cognitive patterns reflected by co-occurrences between the coding elements. Results indicated that text classifiers trained on the state-of-the-art language model Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) can address the efficiency issue in coding CP phases in discussion transcripts and obtain substantial agreements (Cohen's "k" = 0.76) with humans, which outperformed other baseline classifiers. Furthermore, compared to traditional quantitative content analysis, ENA can effectively model the temporal characteristics of online discourse and detect fine-grained cognitive patterns. Overall, the findings suggest a feasible path for applying learning analytics to tracking learning progression and informing theory-based assessments.

By broad consensus, data security laws have failed to stem a rising tide of data breaches. Lawmakers and commentators blame these failures on some combination of underenforcement and the laws failure to recognize the full range of data breach harms. Proposed solutions would augment or expand existing data security laws. These proposed solutions share a fatal flaw: they are rooted in traditional theories of deterrence by punishment. Data security laws come in three forms: duties to protect data, duties to notify consumers after a breach, and post-breach remedies. Almost every data security law is enforced through sanctions, most of which are applied after a company discovers a data breach. In theory, companies increase their data security efforts to avoid sanctions. While appropriate for companies that purchase software, this approach is ineffective when applied to companies that build and provide software as an online service. In the cloud context, improving cybersecurity practices increases expected sanctions. And the cloud context matters. Online data security implicates almost all personal data; online services hold the lion's share of personal data and offline firms rely heavily on cloud software to operate their businesses. Rare-earth iron garnets (REIGs) are the benchmark systems for magnonics, including the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE). While most research has focused on single-crystalline REIGs on complimentary garnet substrates, moving to more, cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible substrates is important to integrate REIG thin films with existing technology. In this regard, we grow a 130 nm-thick polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) film on the Si/SiO2 substrate and investigate the temperature-dependent LSSE. Interestingly, the polycrystalline GdIG film exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature which is induced by tensile in-plane (IP)-strain originating from the thermal-expansion mismatch between the GdIG film and the substrate during rapid thermal annealing. Further, a spin-reorientation transition from the out-of-plane IP direction below TS = 180 K is observed. Additionally, the film reveals a magnetic compensation temperature, T Comp , of ≈240 K. The LSSE voltage not only demonstrates a sign-inversion around T Comp , but also shows noticeable changes around T S. As compared to a single-crystalline GdIG film, the lower LSSE voltage for the polycrystalline GdIG is attributed to the higher effective magnetic anisotropy and enhanced magnon scattering at the grain boundaries. Our study not only paves the way for the cost-effective growth of CMOS-compatible REIG-based systems with PMA for magnonic memory and information processing applications, but also highlights the fact that the spincaloritronic and spin-insulatronic properties of the polycrystalline REIGs follow those of their single-crystalline counterparts with reduced spin-to-charge conversion efficiency through LSSE which can be tuned further by controlling the average gran size and interface engineering. The fate of influenza A virus (IAV) infection in the host cell depends on the balance between cellular defence mechanisms and viral evasion strategies. To illuminate the landscape of IAV cellular restriction, we generated and integrated global genetic loss-of-function screens with transcriptomics and proteomics data. Our multi-omics analysis revealed a subset of both IFN-dependent and independent cellular defence mechanisms that inhibit IAV replication. Amongst these, the autophagy regulator TBC1 domain family member 5 (TBC1D5), which binds Rab7 to enable fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes, was found to control IAV replication in vitro and in vivo and to promote lysosomal targeting of IAV M2 protein. Notably, IAV M2 was observed to abrogate TBC1D5-Rab7 binding through a physical interaction with TBC1D5 via its cytoplasmic tail. Our results provide evidence for the molecular mechanism utilised by IAV M2 protein to escape lysosomal degradation and traffic to the cell membrane, where it supports IAV budding and growth.

This study describes the experiences of four engineers participating in a 7-week long, asynchronous online continuing professional education (CPE) course addressing computational engineering techniques. The online learning environment combined with the virtual nature of computational engineering methods presents a novel environment for these learners. Engineers' beliefs about the role of CPE in engineering practice are explored by investigating how learners navigate a technically challenging asynchronous online course delivered to their workplace. The study uses a naturalistic inquiry design analyzing discussion post writings. Findings indicate that the learners recognized the need for professional development for practicing engineers in the area of computational engineering. The learners appreciated the flexibility of the online learning environment and the authentic learning experience provided with the project. They struggled to define the boundaries required to make time to meet the course requirements while maintaining work obligations. Program planners must remain sensitive to the fact that learners will often prioritize work commitments above learning despite the ability to integrate work and learning through novel course design. The blurring of the work-learning boundary presents challenges for learners and program providers, particularly with technically challenging material which requires significant effort from the learners to learn and apply to their work.

Despite the continuous emphasis on emotion in multimedia learning, it was still unclear how pedagogical agent emotional cues might affect learning. In the present study, a between-subjects experiment was performed to examine the effects of a pedagogical agent with dual-channel emotional cues on learners' emotions, cognitive load, and knowledge transfer performance. Participants from a central Chinese university (age mean = 21.26, N = 66) were randomly divided into three groups. These groups received instructions from an affective pedagogical agent, a neutral pedagogical agent, or a neutral voice narration without pedagogical agent embodiment. Results showed that learners assigned the affective pedagogical agent reported a significantly higher emotional level than learners assigned the neutral pedagogical agent. Learners' perceived task difficulty was not significantly different among groups while instructional efficiency was significantly higher for learners with the affective pedagogical agent. Moreover, learners assigned to the affective pedagogical agent performed significantly better on the knowledge transfer test than those assigned the neutral pedagogical agent or the neutral voice.

Obesity-induced insulin resistance (IR) is known to influence hepatic cytokines (hepatokines), including fibroblast growth factor (FGF-21), fetuin-A, and chemerin. This study aimed to investigate the association between hepatokines and markers of endothelial dysfunction and vascular reactivity in obese adolescents. A total of 45 obese adolescents were categorized into three groups based on glucose tolerance: normal glucose tolerance (NGT), prediabetes (PD), and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We examined the relationships between FGF-21, fetuin-A, and chemerin with endothelial markers (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 [PAI-1], intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1], and vascular cell adhesion marker-1 [VCAM-1]) and vascular surrogates (brachial artery reactivity testing [BART] and peak reactive hyperemia [PRH]). Obese adolescents (age 16.2±1.2 years; 62 % female, 65 % Hispanic) with NGT (n=20), PD (n=14), and T2D (n=11) had significant differences between groups in BMI; waist-hip ratio (p=0.05), systolic BP (p=0.008), LDL-C (p=0.02), PAI-1 (p<0.001). FGF-21 pg/mL (mean±SD: NGT vs. PD vs. T2D 54±42; 266±286; 160±126 p=0.006) and fetuin-A ng/mL (266±80; 253±66; 313±50 p=0.018), were significantly different while chemerin ng/mL (26±5; 31±10; 28±2) did not significantly differ between the groups. Positive correlations were found between chemerin and both PAI-1 (r=0.6; p=0.05) and ICAM-1 (r=0.6; p=0.05), FGF-21 and PAI-1 (r=0.6; p<0.001), and fetuin-A with TNFα (r=−0.4; p=0.05). Negative correlations were found between chemerin and PRH (r= −0.5; p=0.017) and fetuin-A and PRH (r=−0.4; p=0.05). In our cohort, IR predicted higher FGF-21 levels suggesting a linear relationship may exist between the two parameters. Hepatokines can augment alterations in the microvascular milieu in obese adolescents as demonstrated by their associations with the markers PAI-1, ICAM-1, and PRH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
