To explore the relationship between air pollution and total factor productivity and new pathways, This paper examines the impact of air pollution on total factor productivity of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen between 2015 and 2019. It investigates this relationship by considering two pathways: investor sentiment and government attention. The findings indicate that air pollution suppresses total factor productivity of firms. However, air pollution stimulates investor sentiment, which in turn increases R&D investment and total factor productivity, reducing to some extent the dampening effect of air pollution on total factor productivity. There exists a notable positive correlation between air quality and government attention, acting as a mediating variable. This implies that air pollution has the potential to capture the attention of governmental entities, leading to the implementation of appropriate measures aimed at managing and mitigating the occurrence of air pollution caused by industrial enterprises.And the relevant governments should formulate a series of policies to meet the different needs of different enterprises. These two approaches have varying impacts depending on the type of enterprises, thus governments should develop laws to cater to the various demands of different types of enterprises. This study delves into the repercussions of the 2023 earthquake in Turkey, particularity its impact on air pollution. A year post-event, it is evident that scientific literature has paid limited attention to monitoring the situation. However, the release of hazardous substances, such as asbestos, lead, and other toxins, from damaged structures poses a significant threat by contaminating nearby air, soil, and water sources, thereby jeopardizing ecosystems and public well-being. The improper disposal of waste post-earthquake and the presence of mining and oil refinery sites in the region contribute to potential air pollutants. These circumstances create challenging environments conducive to the spread of respiratory diseases, with potential long-term health and social consequences. Unfortunately, existing data gaps hinder a comprehensive understanding of the situation. This paper pioneers the reporting and analysis of data regarding potential sources of air pollution resulting from the earthquake in Turkey. It also pinpoints gaps in knowledge, outlining areas that demand further investigation. To effectively prevent and mitigate air pollution risks and associated health concerns linked to earthquakes, strategic recommendations are proposed. A key suggestion is the establishment of post-disaster air pollution monitoring systems capable of swiftly identifying emerging health issues, facilitating efficient responses, and curtailing potential long-term effects of the disaster. The paper underscores the necessity for continuous health monitoring of the affected population to mitigate possible adverse impacts on human health. Advances in air monitoring methods have made it possible to analyze large-scale air pollution phenomena. Mining potential air pollution information from large-scale air pollution data is an important issue in the current environmental field. Although direct data visualization provides an intuitive presentation, the method is less applicable in long-time domains with high temporal resolution. To better meet the analysis needs of domain experts, we design a visual analysis framework based on friendly multi-view interactions and novel visual view designs. This framework can explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of multiple pollution data. In this paper, a two-stage cluster analysis method is proposed to extract possible transport patterns from large-scale pollutant transport trajectories. This method will be substantially helpful for domain experts to make relevant decisions. At the same time, the index is constructed from long-time series data at the grid point in the specific transport trajectories. This structure can help experts complete the sketch match with custom time resolution. It can assist domain experts in extracting key possible time-varying features. Given its broad impact on human society, air pollution could become a non-economic factor affecting the stock market. But the impact of air pollution on the stock market performance has not received enough attention. This study examines the influence and potential mechanism of air pollution on stock market performance based on the panel data of 1344 A-share listed firms in China covering the period 2013–2019. The result shows that air pollution can negatively affect stock market performance. Second, heterogeneity analysis creatively points out that firms with less analysts, smaller size, stated-owned ownership, polluting related industry are more vulnerable to the negative effects of air pollution. Finally, the result also reveals a mechanism that air pollution could worsen the stock market by depressing investors' sentiments. The above findings enrich current research related to the impact of air pollution on stock market performance and also provide a new perspective for investors to make stock investment decisions. Air pollution is a worldwide problem that needs to be address. Climate change and human health effects are considered the major concerns on this event. On this note, one of the policy tools that could help to resolve the issue is by adopting the contingent valuation method (CVM). CVM is a stated preference approach and can be done through conducting a survey which directly asks the respondent's willingness to pay (WTP) towards a service (i.e. contingent scenario). This paper identified the socio-demographic profiles of the residents in Cabanatuan City, assessed their knowledge and attitude about air pollution and its prevention, policies and programs currently implemented in each selected barangays, described the willingness to pay of the respondents in relation to contingent scenario, and assess the relationship between the profile and the respondents' WTP. Respondents have very high knowledge in the concepts of air pollution that leads to a very positive attitude regardless of their socio-demographic profiles. However, Logistic regression analysis revealed the insignificant relationship between the respondents' profile to their WTP. Respondents have very high knowledge and very positive attitude, which contributes to the positive WTP. Hence, a positive outcome in WTP. This paper examines the spatial relationship between the ambient air pollution level of an apartment and its property value in the housing market of South Korea. Using detailed transaction data for 2015–2018, we construct the air pollution index and estimate a two-stage spatial Durbin error model that controls for both direct and spillover effects. We find that, holding other factors equal, a 1% increase in the air pollution level can, on average, cause a decrease in the value of a local real property by 0.32% ($879). Spatially heterogeneous effects of air pollution on housing prices are investigated, and air pollution is found to have a more significant direct impact on the urban housing market than in rural areas. Moreover, rising air pollution levels in urban centers can raise housing prices in suburban and rural areas, suggesting a strong spillover effect of air pollution and potential migration towards better air quality. The role of finance in environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly important. This study conducts a quasi-natural experiment using a sample of 146 prefecture-level cities from 2015 to 2019. It adopts difference-in-differences to examine the impact of China's green finance reform and innovations pilot zones (GFRIs) on urban air quality. The findings show that air quality has improved after the establishment of GFRIs, indicating that GFRIs have the potential to control air pollution levels. The mechanism tests indicate that the GFRIs are conducive to improving air quality through industrial structure upgrading and green innovation. Furthermore, the heterogeneity analyses show that the air quality in the south of the Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River line, in large and well-developed financially scaled cities, has improved significantly after the establishment of GFRIs. This paper introduces a multifunctional air filter with a strong ability to trap and disinfect pathogens and absorb particulate matter (PM), the volatile organic compound (VOC), and CO 2. This study demonstrates a facile and eco-friendly synthesis of copper coordination polymer particle (Cu-CPP)-decorated non-woven fibre filters (Cu-CPP/NWF) via an in situ growth dip-coating method. Their multifunction potentials in air pollution treatment are also assessed. The Cu-CPP/NWF filter media showed a remarkable performance for air treatment, with 100% disinfection efficiency against airborne E. coli bacteria (2 × 106 CFU mL−1) in 45 min, superior PM removal efficiency (quality factor 0.299 Pa−1), excellent p-xylene adsorption capacities (1.19 mmol/g) and high potential CO 2 uptake capacities (19.81 cm3/g). A Cu-CPP can work as an antibacterial agent and an adsorbent component, thus offering many applications. The rational integration of Cu-CPP can substantially enhance the filtration efficiency via electrostatic interaction, while most commercial air purifiers rely on dense fibrous filters. This study provides valuable insight into developing a multifunctional and reusable air filter proven to be a life-saving product for public health protection. Background: Tracheal, Bronchus, and Lung (TBL) cancer continues to represent the majority of cancer-related incidence and mortality in United States (U.S.). While air pollutants are considered essential risk factors, both global and national average concentrations of major harmful air pollutants have significantly decreased over the decades. Green space may have a beneficial effect on human health. Methods: We obtained data on national and state-level burden of TBL cancer, the annual average concentration of main air pollutants, and levels of green spaces in 2007, 2013, and 2019. According to generalized estimating equation (GEE), we examine the associations among incidence and mortality of TBL cancer, air pollutants, and greenspaces, represented by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in different age groups with models adjusted with meteorological, and socio-demographic. We observed additional effects of the interaction between the NDVI, Ozone, PM2.5, and other factors, which helped us to interpret and understand our results. Also, we collated states that witnessed net increments in forest coverage and conducted the same analysis separately. Results: In our analysis, the majority of associations between NDVI and air pollutants with TBL cancer remained significantly positive, particularly noticeable among individuals aged 20 to 54. However, our findings did not explore air pollution as a potential mediator between greenspace exposure and TBL cancer. While the associations of PM2.5 with TBL cancer remained positive, the other four pollutants showed positive but statistically insignificant associations. Our interaction analysis yielded that there were positive associations between NDVI and ozone, PM2.5, and tobacco use. Max NDVI acts as a protective factor along with high HDI. Additionally, PM2.5 and HDI also showed a negative association. In 18 states with more forest, NDVI acts as a protective factor along with higher health care coverage, better health status, and participation in physical activities. Conclusion: In the state-level of U.S., the effects of total greenspace with TBL cancer are mixed and could be modified by various socio-economic factors. Air pollution has the potential to disrupt ecologically- and economically-beneficial services provided by invertebrates, including pollination and natural pest regulation. To effectively predict and mitigate this disruption requires an understanding of how the impacts of air pollution vary between invertebrate groups. Here we conduct a global meta-analysis of 120 publications comparing the performance of different invertebrate functional groups in unpolluted and polluted atmospheres. We focus on the pollutants ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter. We show that beneficial invertebrate performance is reduced by air pollution, whereas the performance of plant pest invertebrates is not significantly affected. Ozone pollution has the most detrimental impacts, and these occur at concentrations below national and international air quality standards. Changes in invertebrate performance are not dependent on air pollutant concentrations, indicating that even low levels of pollution are damaging. Predicted increases in tropospheric ozone could result in unintended consequences to global invertebrate populations and their valuable ecological services. Air pollution has the potential to harm invertebrates. This meta-analysis compares invertebrate performance in unpolluted and polluted atmospheres, finding negative impacts on beneficial invertebrates and detrimental impacts from low levels of ozone. Enhancing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is an important exercise to achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement also recognizes that support to developing countries in this regard will help them to aim for higher climate ambition. The role of international support programmes in the NDC enhancement process is crucial but is not often covered in scientific research. Consequently, the factors driving a country's decision to apply for NDC-related assistance have also not yet been fully explored. Acknowledging the research gap, this paper framed and tested multiple hypotheses to evaluate the impact of potential factors on the likelihood of a country applying for assistance to enhance its NDCs. For this, a logistic regression method was employed. Data from the two initiatives coordinating the technical and financial assistance worldwide, namely the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP) and Climate Promise, were reviewed for this purpose. The CAEP program is financially supported by Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK. This study identifies the level of socio-economic development and the population's exposure to air pollution as key factors which influence the likelihood of applying for assistance under CAEP and Climate Promise in developing countries. Further, the presence of democratic aspects in the form of governance may also influence this choice. Finally, this study discusses the results and associated policy implications for countries receiving assistance to enhance their NDCs. Developing countries with relatively low socio-economic development are more likely to apply for assistance to enhance their NDCs. The assistance is designed to help them to build capacities to develop and implement future climate policies. Air pollution and climate change issues are interconnected. Exposure to air pollution is a potential indicator that can influence the NDC enhancement process in developing countries. The assistance for enhancing NDCs will lead to NDC targets that are well-informed and are aligned with national and sub-national development priorities with realistic prospects of implementation. Urban greenery is identified as a potential tool in air pollution mitigation. However, the impact is still debated. This paper introduces the innovative VIDA (Vegetation Impact Dynamic Assessment) model, specifically designed to quantify air pollution removal through deposition on vegetation. The VIDA model offers an advanced representation of vegetation that could be integrated into urban air quality dispersion models in the future. Furthermore, the model serves as a valuable tool for exploring the intricate interactions among deposition, resuspension, and wash-off processes, as well as understanding how meteorological conditions and various leaf traits influence these processes. The current version of the model focuses on particulate matter (PM) and encompasses a range of processes, including deposition on vegetation surfaces, encapsulation within the waxy cuticle, wind-driven resuspension, and wash-off. Additionally, the model takes into consideration dynamic changes in PM concentrations on the leaf surface over time, incorporating factors such as PM size fractions, meteorological conditions, and leaf characteristics. This comprehensive approach allows for the evaluation of various species or species groups based on their distinct traits. The VIDA model effectively reproduces measured data, yet continued evaluation remains crucial as new data emerges. Notably, challenges were encountered due to data scarcity and the absence of standardized methods for characterizing vegetation traits. Addressing these challenges and refining the representation of wash-off process will enhance the VIDA model's utility in predicting the dynamic relationship between vegetation and air quality. This study assessed the environmental impacts of beef cattle production and their effects on the overall sustainability of Canadian beef production. Cradle to farm gate, cradle to processor's gate, and cradle to consumer plate life cycle assessments were carried out to quantify greenhouse gases (GHG), resource use (i.e., water, land, and fuel), and potential water and air pollution (i.e., freshwater eutrophication, terrestrial acidification, and photochemical oxidants formation). Across the production chain, feed production had the greatest impact on most environmental indicators. The GHG intensity without dairy meat was estimated as 10.4 kg CO2-eq per kg of live weight (LW), corresponding to 32.8 kg CO2-eq per kg of consumed boneless beef. Including dairy meat reduced GHG intensity by 5.8% (0.6 kg CO2-eq kg LW–1) compared to when it was excluded. Other environmental metrics per kg of LW were 657 L, 38.7 m2 annual crop-eq, 0.4 kg oil-eq, 2.6 kg P-eq, 115.9 kg SO2-eq, and 8.7 kg NOx-eq for water use, land use, fossil fuel use, freshwater eutrophication, terrestrial acidification, and photochemical oxidants, respectively. Data provide benchmarks for use in future regional and national assessments that are designed to encourage the adoption of sustainable management practices that can lower the environmental footprint of Canadian beef production. Considering the alarming rise in the rate of asthma and respiratory diseases among school children, it is of great importance to investigate all probable causes. Outside of the home, children spend most of their time in school. Many studies have researched the indoor environmental quality of primary and secondary school buildings to determine the exposure of school children to indoor air pollution. However, studies of very young children in nurseries are scarce. Unlike at elementary schools or universities, children in nurseries are more vulnerable due to their physiology, inability to articulate discomfort and to adapt their behaviour to avoid exposures. This article reviews current studies on the indoor environment in nurseries. It summarizes air pollution levels and related environmental and behavioural factors in nurseries that have been reported in the literature. Additionally, exposure to indoor air pollution and related potential health outcomes are examined. This review concludes that indoor air pollution in nurseries often exceeds current guidelines, and designers and policymakers should be made aware of the impact on the health and wellbeing of children in nurseries. Proper interventions and guidelines should be considered to create a healthy indoor environment for nursery children. Practical application : Previous IAQ assessments have mainly focused on indoor temperatures and CO2 levels. Data on comprehensive monitoring (including PMs, NO2, O3 and other pollutants) of indoor air quality of nurseries are scarce. Particularly in the UK, studies about indoor air quality in nurseries have not been founded. Epiphytic subaerial algae represent an assemblage of micro-organisms widely distributed in terrestrial environments, including urban environments. Urban habitats present many challenges for the survival of photosynthetic micro-organisms, yet many species of subaerial microalgae have been reported from these environments, demonstrating a high tolerance to the harsh conditions of urban environments. In this study, the epiphytic subaerial communities of five parks in the urban area of Bangkok were studied using a metabarcoding approach (sequencing of the 23S rDNA marker), with the goal of unraveling their diversity and assessing potential bioindicators with levels of air pollution. Diversity indexes were determined for the algal taxa detected, which were separated into groups corresponding to different collection sites by cluster analysis. Relationships between taxa and air pollutants were analyzed by PCA and the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The results showed a high diversity of epiphytic subaerial algae. We recorded 101 taxa belonging to the Cyanophyta (70 taxa), Chlorophyta (21 taxa), Charophyta (5 taxa), Bacillariophyta (3 taxa), and Eustigmatophyta (2 taxa). The most abundant taxon was Chroococcidiopsis sp. 1, for which up to 13,254 sequences/cm2 were recorded. The Shannon–Weaver index ranged between 1.37 and 2.51, the Margalef index between 3.84 and 4.75, and the Pielou index between 0.30 and 0.54. The similarity index was between 8.00% and 64.82%, according to the cluster analysis results for the three groups. The PCA indicated that all air pollutants affected the diversity and abundance of epiphytic subaerial algae. Cyanothece sp. 2 was negatively related to O3 and positively related to NO2 and CO and is suggested as a potential bioindicator of air pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that individuals with preexisting conditions, including diabetes mellitus (DM), are more susceptible to air pollution. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we proposed that a high glucose setting enhances ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced macrophage activation and secretion of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-1β, through activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, altering the balance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs). Results: Exposure of mouse alveolar macrophages to non-cytotoxic doses of PM2.5 led to upregulation of IL-1β, activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, increased nuclear translocation of the transcription factor NF-κB, increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and increased expression and enzymatic activity of MMP-9; these effects were enhanced when cells were pretreated with high glucose. However, pretreatment in a high glucose setting alone did not induce significant changes. ROS generation following PM2.5 exposure was abolished when cells were pretreated with ROS scavengers such as Trolox and superoxide dismutase (SOD), or with an NADPH oxidase inhibitor, DPI. Pretreatment of cells with DPI attenuated the effects of a high glucose setting on PM2.5-induced upregulation of IL-1β, activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, and nuclear translocation of NF-κB. In addition, enhancement of PM2.5-induced expression and enzymatic activity of MMP-9 following high glucose pretreatment was not observed in primary alveolar macrophages obtained from NLRP3 or IL-1R1 knockout (KO) mice, where pro-IL-1β cannot be cleaved to IL-1β or cells are insensitive to IL-1β, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that exposure of mouse alveolar macrophages to PM2.5 in a high glucose setting enhanced PM2.5-induced production of IL-1β through activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and nuclear translocation of NF-κB due to PM2.5-induced oxidative stress, leading to MMP-9 upregulation. The key role of NADPH oxidase in PM2.5-induced ROS generation and activation of the IL-1β secretion pathway and the importance of IL-1β secretion and signaling in PM2.5-induced increases in MMP-9 enzymatic activity were also demonstrated. This study provides a further understanding of the potential mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of individuals with DM to air pollution and suggests potential therapeutic targets. Climate policies that target greenhouse gas emissions can improve air quality by reducing co-emitted air pollutant emissions. However, the extent to which climate policy could contribute to the targets of reducing existing pollution disparities across different populations remains largely unknown. We quantify potential air pollution exposure reductions under U.S. federal carbon policy, considering implications of resulting health benefits for exposure disparities across U.S. racial/ethnic groups. We focus on policy cases that achieve reductions of 40-60% in 2030 economy-wide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, when compared with 2005 emissions. The 50% CO2 reduction policy case reduces average fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure across racial/ethnic groups, with greatest benefit for non-Hispanic Black (−0.44 μg/m3) and white populations (−0.37 μg/m3). The average exposure disparity for racial/ethnic minorities rises from 12.4% to 13.1%. Applying an optimization approach to multiple emissions reduction scenarios, we find that no alternate combination of reductions from different CO2 sources would substantially mitigate exposure disparities. Results suggest that CO2-based strategies for this range of reductions are insufficient for fully mitigating PM2.5 exposure disparities between white and racial/ethnic minority populations; addressing disparities may require larger-scale structural changes. U.S. federal climate policies can reduce air pollutant emissions and associated health impacts from fine particulate matter. Three studies employing multimethod approach were conducted to examine the potential effect of air pollution on materialism. By employing objective regional data on air pollution and materialism, Study 1 revealed a significant association between air pollution and materialism at the aggregate level. Drawing on data from a nationally representative survey, Study 2 observed that participants who perceived more air pollution in their place reported greater endorsement of materialistic values. Study 3 further demonstrated that participants who were primed with psychological experience of air pollution showed a significantly higher state materialism compared to the control group, and this association is mediated via insecurity feelings. Overall, the present findings suggest that air pollution could relate to elevated materialism. The result of this research is expected to provide new insights into antecedents of materialism as well as psychological consequences of air pollution, but also has implications for marketing practice and public policy. An integrated approach to understanding all measured pollutants with multi-discipline in different time scales and understanding the mechanisms hidden under low air quality (AQ) conditions is essential for tackling potential air pollution issues. In this study, the air pollution of Sivas province was analyzed with meteorological and PM2.5 data over six years to assess the city's AQ in terms of PM2.5 pollution and analyze the effect of meteorological factors on it. It was found that the winter period (January–February-November–December) of every year except 2019—which has missing data—is the period with the highest air pollution in the province. In addition, the days exceeding the daily PM2.5 limit values in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021 were also seen in the spring and summer months, which inclined the study to focus on additional pollutant sources such as long-range dust transport and road vehicles. The year 2017 has the highest values and was analyzed in detail. Pollution periods with the most increased episodes in 2018 were analyzed with the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) and Dust Regional Atmospheric Model (DREAM) models. As a result of the study, the average PM2.5 values in 2017 were 31.66 ± 19.2 µg/m3 and a correlation of −0.49 between temperature and PM2.5. As a result of model outputs, it was found that the inversion is intensely observed in the province, which is associated with an increase of PM2.5 during the episodes. Dust transport from northwestern Iraq and northeastern Syria is observed, especially on days with daily average PM2.5 values above 100 µg/m3. Additionally, planetary boundary layer (PBL) data analysis with PM pollution revealed a significant negative correlation (r = −0.61). External environmental factors can deeply shape customer behavior and contribute to uncertainty in retail operations. In this study, we use field data from a national fashion sporting goods retail chain to empirically study the effect on retail store performance from one important but underappreciated external environmental factor, air pollution; and investigate the potential mechanism of this air pollution's impact. We find that air pollution has an inverted U‐shaped effect on store traffic, which is attributed to a shift of customers between offline shopping and other activities with different air pollution exposure levels. The variation in store traffic caused by air pollution further leads to a U‐shaped relationship between air pollution and the retail conversion rate. In addition, air pollution can affect customer composition as well as the perceived utility of products, reflected by more men's wear and less sportswear sold in hazy weather. In view of the globally increasing air pollution problem, especially in the context of climate change, our findings highlight the importance and value of taking air pollution into account in operations and marketing management. Carbon fly ash (CFA) is the principal industrial waste byproduct from the burning fossil fuel (coal combustion) for the thermal generation of electricity. CFA is a gray or black powdery solid that is constituted mostly metal oxides (Al, Si Fe and Ca), unburned carbon (UC) and other inorganic substance. The management of fly ash has thus been a matter of concern given the requirement of the large area of land for its disposal and potential of causing pollution of air, water, land and effects on human health. Physical and chemical characteristics of fly ash is important, as these characteristics influence its subsequent use and disposal. X-ray diffraction, and fluorescence, scanning microscopy with an energy dispersive spectroscopy, FTIR, BET was the common techniques employed to characterize FA. Characterization by XRD analysis identified the presence of quartz, mullite and sillimanite phases; while the FTIR results allowed the identification of vibrational bands, characteristic of Si-O-Si and Si-O bonds. The EDS analysis coupled to SEM allowed verifying that the composition of the samples is consistent with the results sought and that the morphological characteristics validate the proposed methodology. In March 2020, the Italian government imposed a national lockdown which was almost completely removed in June 2020. Due to the abrupt stop of human activities, emissions of air pollutants decreased. Air pollution is an environmental risk factor for noncommunicable disease and mortality. Emerging evidence also suggests a role in male infertility. In this study, we compared sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) levels and conventional semen parameters between subjects undergoing sDF determination and routine semen analysis in a single Italian centre, during about 6 months before (N = 119) and after lockdown (N = 105). After lockdown, we found an improvement of sperm progressive motility (48.00[38.50–58.00]% vs. 42.00[33.00–53.00]%) and sDF levels (as total: 24.79[18.33–33.97]% vs. 35.02[25.04–45.73]%, p <.001; brighter: 14.02[10.69–17.93]% vs 18.54[13.58–25.82]%, p <.001 and dimmer sDF: 9.24[5.64–15.78]% vs. 12.24[8.08–19.10]%, p <.01), mirrored by a decrease of leukocyte semen concentration (p <.01). The improvement of sperm motility and DNA quality was maintained after adjusting for leukocyte concentration and several conditions known to affect sperm motility and/or sDF levels. With a significant decrease in air pollution observed in Tuscany during and after lockdown, associated improvement in sperm motility and DNA quality in patients referred to the infertility clinic is suggestive of the potential role of air pollution in male infertility. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution presents a severe threat to the environment and human health. Catalytic reduction of NOx with H2 using single-atom catalysts poses considerable potential in the remediation of air pollution; however, the unfavorable process of H2 dissociation limits its practical application. Herein, we report that the in situ formation of PtTi cocatalytic sites (which are stabilized by Pt-Ti bonds) over Pt1/TiO2 significantly increases NOx conversion by reducing the energy barrier of H2 activation. We demonstrate that two H atoms of H2 molecule are absorbed by adjacent Pt atoms in Pt-O and Pt-Ti, respectively, which can promote the cleave of H-H bonds. Besides, PtTi sites facilitate the adsorption of NO molecules and further lower the activation barrier of the whole de-NOx reaction. Extending the concept to Pt1/Nb2O5 and Pd1/TiO2 systems also sees enhanced catalytic activities, demonstrating that engineering the cocatalytic sites can be a general strategy for the design of high-efficiency catalysts that can benefit environmental sustainability. Vehicular emissions comprise a main source of air pollutants, especially particulate matter (PM), which contains toxic compounds. Brazil has been restricting vehicular emissions for more than 30 years to minimize the impacts of fleet vehicles, but despite the restrictive legislation, several Brazilian cities still suffer from the effects of atmospheric pollution. The adoption of nature-based solutions (NbS) is being hailed as a sound alternative for improving urban air quality. In this sense, trees are a true reflection of the NbS concept since they can directly decrease PM levels by intercepting and resuspending particles, as well as altering pollution dispersion patterns. We wanted to understand the practical outcome of urban forest fragments as an NbS. Therefore, using litterfall in urban forest fragments, this study reported the role of green areas in reducing air pollution concentrations in 4 urban parks in Sao Paulo Megacity, Brazil. Air contaminants (Cd, Cu and Pb) varied from the edge to the core of urban forests. Multivariate analysis revealed that areas with different vehicle fleets influenced the input of air pollutants into these forest fragments. Our study further showed that trees serve as a natural barrier against PM. It can be concluded that this low-cost NbS alternative can reduce air pollution and has a potential to improve human health and well-being, and should be incorporated into municipal policies and programs, especially in critical locations of high human density. and poorly managed green areas. The potential effects of air pollution on the ocular surface environment have not been fully evaluated, and even fewer studies have been conducted on the lagged effects of air pollution on dry eye disease (DED). The data of 9970 DED outpatients between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2020, and data for six air pollutants, including PM10, PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3), were obtained from 11 standard urban background stationary air quality monitors in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. Time series analysis design and quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression models combined with distributed lagged nonlinear models (DLNM) were used. Single- and multi-pollutant model results suggest that each additional per 10 μg/m3 of PM10, NO2, and SO2 is associated with an increased risk of outpatient DED on lag day 0 and PM2.5, NO2, and SO2 with other cumulative lag days; R software version 4.0.4 (15 February 2021) was used for the analysis. We conducted first time series analysis with a large sample size in northwest China (Xinjiang) and confirmed, for the first time, the impact of air pollution including particulate pollutants (PM10, PM2.5) and acidic gasses (SO2, NO2) on DED risk in the Urumqi region, and suggested the potential lagged effects of PM2.5, SO2, and NO2. Background: Urban Vehicle Access Regulations (UVAR) hold great potential to reduce negative transport externalities driven by increased mobility demand and rapid urbanisation. However, as they are potential measures to the wicked problem of climate change mitigation and achieving overall sustainability, their implementation pathways are often complex due to the multidimensionality of sustainability and other challenges. Although decision support tools like the multi-criteria decision analysis might help simplify these complexities, selecting the appropriate criteria based on the peculiarity of UVAR remains pertinent. This study contributes to the sustainable transport decision support literature to address this challenge by identifying relevant criteria for the UVAR measure planning process using the Delphi survey approach. Results: It begins with 23 criteria systematically selected from scientific literature and clustered into four dimensions in the first round. This was expanded into 30 criteria and five dimensions in the second survey round based on the participating experts' ratings and rankings. The consensus results showed that most of the identified criteria were considered to be of great potential in UVAR measure planning, with public acceptability, stakeholder engagement, political agenda, and the potential impacts on air pollution and accessibility considered the most important. Conclusions: Apart from helping urban authorities select feasible and effective UVAR measures, the resulting assessment structure will also help identify the main barriers and drivers for UVAR adoption. Studies on the vitality of urban residents' daily commuting and air pollution are scarce. Based on the cell phone mobile signaling data, urban air quality observation data, and urban transportation infrastructure environment data of Nanjing in 2019, and through the panel regression model and the standard deviation ellipse analysis (SDE) to measure the impact of air pollution on residents' daily traffic vitality, we construct the survey panel matrix data system with streets as spatial units. Through SDE and panel regression model analysis, we measured the restraining effect of air pollution on the traffic vitality. The scope of the traffic vitality area SDE was found to shrink as the air quality index (AQI) increases. The study found three main characteristics: (1) Under different transportation models and different location conditions, there are obvious differences in traffic vitality. The entire city presents a trend of "northeast-southwest" axial expansion in the spatial pattern of the traffic vitality. Compared with the urban core area, the traffic vitality of residents in the north-south areas of Nanjing's periphery has declined significantly. (2) The inhibitory effect of air pollution on public traffic vitality and self-driving traffic vitality are differences. Approximately one-tenth of traffic activities may be inhibited by air pollution. The weakening of traffic vitality greatly reduces the city's ability to attract and gather people, materials, and resources. (3) The inhibitory effect of air pollution on traffic vitality is heterogeneous under different transportation infrastructure environments. The higher the public transportation station density and public transportation frequency of the street, the more obvious the suppression effect of air pollution. The higher the parking density, station accessibility, road intersections density, and transportation facility diversity, the lower the suppression effect of air pollution. This study elucidates the relationship among air pollution, the transportation infrastructure environment, and the traffic vitality, and provides significant guidelines for optimizing the organization of elements in the transportation infrastructure environment, thereby mitigating the inhibitory effect of air pollution on traffic vitality. Gasoline engines remain a potential source of atmospheric pollution. Dual fuel combustion was under investigation to cope with exposure to pollutants. Investigations on emission parameters and engine performance for a single-cylinder four-stroke petrol engine are carried out using multicriteria decision-making method (MCDM). Bar charts are constructed for three emission parameters in function of engine temperature and fuel consumption for different blends. Fuels were supplied at different engine running speeds. Parameters recorded during the experimental study were the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), percentages of lower explosive limit (LEL), and combustion duration. The maximum concentration of CO was 339 ppm at 70°C and 4000 rpm. The maximum concentration of H2S (3 ppm), was recorded at 94°C and 4000 rpm. The maximum percentage of LEL recorded was 3% at the majority of temperature and 4000 rpm. Consumption of 25 Cl of (gasoline + HHO) was recorded during the maximum time (50 min). The experiment showed high emissions of CO that can provoke respiratory disorders and explosive gases, factors of explosion at high speeds (4000 rpm), and low temperature (70°C). H2S emissions are very low (0–3 ppm) independently of the engine speeds and temperature. Blending gasoline with HHO shows a reduction in fuel consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exposure to high concentration levels of fine particle matter with diameter ≤2.5 µ m (PM 2.5) can lead to great threats to human health in the east of China. Air pollution control has greatly reduced the PM 2.5 concentration and entered a crucial stage that required support like fine seasonal prediction. In this study, we analyzed the contributions of emission predictors and climate variability to seasonal prediction of PM 2.5 concentration. The socioeconomic PM 2.5 , isolated by atmospheric chemical models, could well describe the gradual increasing trend of PM 2.5 during the winters of 2001–2012 and the sharp decreasing trend since 2013. The preceding climate predictors have successfully simulated the interannual variability in winter PM 2.5 concentration. Based on the year-to-year increment approach, a model for seasonal prediction of gridded winter PM 2.5 concentration (10 km × 10 km) in the east of China was trained by integrating emission and climate predictors. The area-averaged percentage of same sign was 81.4 % (relative to the winters of 2001–2019) in the leave-one-out validation. In three densely populated and heavily polluted regions, the correlation coefficients were 0.93 (North China), 0.95 (Yangtze River Delta) and 0.87 (Pearl River Delta) during 2001–2019, and the root-mean-square errors were 6.8, 4.2 and 4.7 µ g m -3. More important, the significant decrease in PM 2.5 concentration, resulting from the implementation of strict emission control measures in recent years, was also reproduced. In the recycling independent tests, the prediction model developed in this study also maintained high accuracy and robustness. This study investigates the influence of the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations on local air quality in Beijing from 2013 through 2019. CNY celebrations include burning of fireworks and firecrackers, which consequently has a significant short-term impact on local air quality. In this study, we bring together comprehensive observations at the newly constructed Aerosol and Haze Laboratory at Beijing University of Chemical Technology – West Campus (BUCT-AHL) and hourly measurements from 12 Chinese government air quality measurement stations throughout the Beijing metropolitan area. These datasets are used together to provide a detailed analysis of air quality during the CNY over multiple years, during which the city of Beijing prohibited the use of fireworks and firecrackers in an effort to reduce air pollution before CNY 2018. Datasets used in this study include particulate matter mass concentrations (PM 2.5 and PM 10), trace gases (NO x , SO 2 , O 3 , and CO), and meteorological variables for 2013–2019; aerosol particle size distributions; and concentrations of sulfuric acid and black carbon for 2018 and 2019. Studying the CNY over several years, which has rarely been done in previous studies, can show trends and effects of societal and policy changes over time, and the results can be applied to study problems and potential solutions of air pollution resulting from holiday celebrations. Our results show that during the 2018 CNY, air pollutant concentrations peaked during the CNY night (for example, PM 2.5 reached a peak around midnight of over 250 µ g cm -3 , compared to values of less than 50 µ g cm -3 earlier in the day). The pollutants with the most notable spikes were sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and black carbon, which are emitted in burning of fireworks and firecrackers. Sulfuric acid concentration followed the sulfur dioxide concentration and showed elevated overnight concentration. Analysis of aerosol particle number size distribution showed direct emissions of particles with diameters around 100 nm in relation to firework burning. During the 2019 CNY, the pollution levels were somewhat lower (PM 2.5 peaking at around 150 µ g cm -3 on CNY compared to values around 100 µ g cm -3 earlier in the day), and only minor peaks related to firework burning were observed. During both CNYs 2018 and 2019 secondary aerosol formation in terms of particle growth was observed. Meteorological conditions were comparable between these 2 years, suggesting that CNY-related emissions were less in 2019 compared to 2018. During the 7-year study period, it appears that there has been a general decrease in CNY-related emissions since 2016. For example, the peak in PM 2.5 in 2016 was over 600 µ g cm -3 , and in the years following, the peak was less each year, with a peak around 150 µ g cm -3 in 2019. This is indicative of the restrictions and public awareness of the air quality issues having a positive effect on improving air quality during the CNY. Vat photopolymerization (VP), a type of additive manufacturing process that cures resin to build objects, can emit potentially hazardous particles and gases. We evaluated two VP technologies, stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), in three separate environmental chambers to understand task-based impacts on indoor air quality. Airborne particles, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and/or specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during each task to evaluate their exposure potential. Regardless of duration, all tasks released particles and organic gases, though concentrations varied between SLA and DLP processes and among tasks. Maximum particle concentrations reached 1200 #/cm3 and some aerosols contained potentially hazardous elements such as barium, chromium, and manganese. TVOC concentrations were highest for the isopropyl alcohol (IPA) rinsing, soaking, and drying post-processing tasks (up to 36.8 mg/m3), lowest for the resin pouring pre-printing, printing, and resin recovery post-printing tasks (up to 0.1 mg/m3), and intermediate for the curing post-processing task (up to 3 mg/m3). Individual VOCs included, among others, the potential occupational carcinogen acetaldehyde and the immune sensitizer 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (pouring, printing, recovery, and curing tasks). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disorder with substantial patient burden and leading cause of death globally. Cigarette smoke remains to be the most recognised causative factor behind COPD pathogenesis. Given the alarming increase in prevalence of COPD amongst non-smokers in recent past, a potential role of air pollution particularly particulate matter (PM) in COPD development has gained much attention of the scientists. Indeed, several epidemiological studies indicate strong correlation between airborne PM and COPD incidence/exacerbations. PM-induced oxidative stress seems to be the major player in orchestrating COPD inflammatory cycle but the exact molecular mechanism(s) behind such a process are still poorly understood. This may be due to the complexity of multiple molecular pathways involved. Oxidative stress-linked mitochondrial dysfunction and autophagy have also gained importance and have been the focus of recent studies regarding COPD pathogenesis. Accordingly, the present review is aimed at understanding the key molecular players behind PM-mediated COPD pathogenesis through analysis of various experimental studies supported by epidemiological data to identify relevant preventive/therapeutic targets in the area. Few air pollution studies have been applied in the State of Palestine and all showed an increase in particulate matter concentrations above WHO guidelines. However, there is no clear methodology for selecting monitoring locations. In this study, a methodology based on GIS and locally calibrated low-cost sensors was tested. A GIS-based weighted overlay summation process for the potential sources of air pollution (factories, quarries, and traffic), taking into account the influence of altitude and climate, was used to obtain an air pollution hazard map for Nablus, Palestine. To test the methodology, eight locally calibrated PM sensors (AirUs) were deployed to measure PM2.5 concentrations for 55 days from 7 January to 2 March 2022. The results of the hazard map showed that 82% of Nablus is exposed to a high and medium risk of PM pollution. Sensors' readings showed a good match between the hazard intensity and PM concentrations. It also shows an elevated PM2.5 concentrations above WHO guidelines in all areas. In summary, the overall average for PM2.5 in the Nablus was 48 µg/m3. This may indicate the effectiveness of mapping methodology and the use of low-cost, locally calibrated sensors in characterizing air quality status to identify the potential remediation options. Background: The provision of different types of mortality metrics (e.g., mortality rate ratios [MRRs] and life expectancy) allows the research community to access a more informative set of health metrics. The aim of this study was to provide a panel of mortality metrics associated with a comprehensive range of disorders and to design a web page to visualize all results. Methods and findings: In a population-based cohort of all 7,378,598 persons living in Denmark at some point between 2000 and 2018, we identified individuals diagnosed at hospitals with 1,803 specific categories of disorders through the International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision (ICD-10) in the National Patient Register. Information on date and cause of death was obtained from the Registry of Causes of Death. For each of the disorders, a panel of epidemiological and mortality metrics was estimated, including incidence rates, age-of-onset distributions, MRRs, and differences in life expectancy (estimated as life years lost [LYLs]). Additionally, we examined models that adjusted for measures of air pollution to explore potential associations with MRRs. We focus on 39 general medical conditions to simplify the presentation of results, which cover 10 broad categories: circulatory, endocrine, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, urogenital, musculoskeletal, hematologic, mental, and neurologic conditions and cancer. A total of 3,676,694 males and 3,701,904 females were followed up for 101.7 million person-years. During the 19-year follow-up period, 1,034,273 persons (14.0%) died. For 37 of the 39 selected medical conditions, mortality rates were larger and life expectancy shorter compared to the Danish general population. For these 37 disorders, MRRs ranged from 1.09 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09 to 1.10) for vision problems to 7.85 (7.77 to 7.93) for chronic liver disease, while LYLs ranged from 0.31 (0.14 to 0.47) years (approximately 16 weeks) for allergy to 17.05 (16.95 to 17.15) years for chronic liver disease. Adjustment for air pollution had very little impact on the estimates; however, a limitation of the study is the possibility that the association between the different disorders and mortality could be explained by other underlying factors associated with both the disorder and mortality. Conclusions: In this study, we show estimates of incidence, age of onset, age of death, and mortality metrics (both MRRs and LYLs) for a comprehensive range of disorders. Global Climate Models (GCMs) and Regional Climate Models (RCMs) have been widely used in understanding the impact of climate change on wind-driven processes without explicit evaluation of their skill. This study is oriented towards assessing the skill of 28 GCMs and 16 RCMs, and more importantly to assess the ability of RCMs relative to parent GCMs in simulating near-surface wind speed (WS) in diverse climate variable scales (daily, monthly, seasonal and annual) over the ocean and land region of the South Asian (SA) domain (11° S–30° N and 26° E–107° E). Our results reveal that the climate models' competence varies among climate variable scales and regions. However, after rigorous examination of all climate models' skill, it is recommended to use the mean ensemble of MPI-ESM-MR, CSIRO-Mk3.6.0 and GFDL-ESM2G GCMs for understanding future changes in wave climate, coastal sediment transport and offshore wind energy potential, and REMO2009 RCM driven by MPI-M-MPI-ESM-LR for future onshore wind energy potential assessment and air pollution modelling. All parent GCMs outperform the RCMs (except CCCma-CanESM2(RCA4)) over the ocean. In contrast, most RCMs show significant added value over the land region of the SA domain. With the continuous promotion of industrialization and urbanization, China's environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious, which has caused considerable damage to the natural balance. Air pollution seriously harms people's physical and mental health, the ecological environment, and the social sustainable development of society. In this study, the backward trajectory model and multifractal methods were adopted to analyze air pollution in Zhengzhou. The backward trajectory analysis showed that most clusters of air pollution were from southern Hebei, eastern Shandong, and mid-western Henan, which were then transported to Zhengzhou. For the PSCF and CWT analyses, we selected four representative cities to explore how close the air pollution of Zhengzhou is to other areas on the basis of air polluted concentration. The results of several multifractal methods indicated that multifractality existed in the AQI time series of Zhengzhou and cross-correlations between Zhengzhou and each of the four cities. The widths of multifractal spectra showed that the air pollution in Zhengzhou was closest to that in Jinan, followed by Shijiazhuang, Zibo, and Luoyang. The CDFA analysis showed that carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and inhalable particulate matter (PM10) had important influences on air pollution in Zhengzhou. These findings offer a useful reference for air pollution sources and their potential contributions in Zhengzhou, which can support policy makers in environmental governance and in achieving sustainable urban development. The most prevalent cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide is acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its consequences. Exposure to particulate matter (PM) from air pollution has been shown to impair both. Various plausible pathogenic mechanisms have been identified, including microRNAs (miRNAs), an epigenetic regulator for gene expression. Endogenous miRNAs, average 22-nucleotide RNAs (ribonucleic acid), regulate gene expression through mRNA cleavage or translation repression and can influence proinflammatory gene expression posttranscriptionally. However, little is known about miRNA responses to fine PM (PM2.5, PM10, ultrafine particles, black carbon, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) from air pollution and their potential contribution to cardiovascular consequences, including systemic inflammation regulation. For the past decades, microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as novel, prospective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in various illnesses, including ACS. As one of the most important industrial cities in Northwest China, Lanzhou currently suffers from serious air pollution. This study analyzed the formation mechanism and potential source areas of persistent air pollution in Lanzhou during the heating period from November 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017 based on the air pollutant concentrations and relevant meteorological data. Our findings indicate that particulate pollution was extremely severe during the study period. The daily PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations had significantly negative correlations with daily temperature, wind speed, maximum daily boundary layer height, while the daily PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations showed significantly positive correlations with daily relative humidity. Five persistent pollution episodes were identified and classified as either stagnant accumulation or explosive growth types according to the mechanism of pollution formation and evolution. The PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations and PM2.5/PM10 ratio followed a growing "saw-tooth cycle" pattern during the stagnant accumulation type event. Dust storms caused abrupt peaks in PM10 and a sharp decrease in the PM2.5/PM10 ratio in explosive growth type events. The potential sources of PM10 were mainly distributed in the Kumtag Desert in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Qaidam Basin and Hehuang Valley in Qinghai Province, and the western and eastern Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province. The contributions to PM10 were more than 120 μg/m3. The important potential sources of PM2.5 were located in Hehuang Valley in Qinghai and Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu; the concentrations of PM2.5 were more than 60 μg/m3. Simple Summary: Ecological interactions among organisms underpin the stability of ecological networks, which are responsible for species biodiversity in ecosystems. These interactions are currently threatened by environmental risks, mainly due to human activities, such as air pollution. Among air pollutants, tropospheric ozone (O3) is known to disrupt chemical communication between plants and their pollinators. Alarmingly, its concentration is likely to increase by two–four-fold in the next two decades. However, the direct effects of O3 on the behavior of pollinators themselves have not been investigated so far, even though insect behavior is key to their ecological interactions. In this study, we evaluated the potential effects of O3 at different field-realistic concentrations on the behavior of the fig wasp Blastophaga psenes, the exclusive pollinator of the Mediterranean fig species Ficus carica. We found that O3, even at low concentrations, induced abnormal motility in fig wasps, and that exposed individuals might only have a reduced chance of recovery. Overall, our findings indicate that O3 can affect pollinator behavior, which may have detrimental implications for pollination systems. Among anthropogenic environmental risks, air pollution has the potential to impact animal and plant physiology, as well as their interactions and the long-term survival of populations, which could threaten the functioning of ecosystems. What is especially alarming is that the concentration of tropospheric ozone (O3) has dramatically increased since pre-industrial times. However, the direct effects of O3 on the behavior of pollinators themselves have not been investigated so far even though insect behavior is key to their ecological interactions, which underpin the stability of ecological networks responsible for species biodiversity in ecosystems. In this study, we aim to determine the potential effects of O3 episodes at different field-realistic concentrations (0, 40, 80, 120, and 200 ppb for 60 min) on the behavior of the fig wasp Blastophaga psenes by monitoring exposed individuals hourly for 5 h after exposure. We found that ozone episodes induced major changes in insect behavior, which were already significant at 80 ppb with individuals displaying abnormal motility. The tracking over time clearly showed that exposed individuals might only have a reduced chance of recovery, with a decreasing proportion of active fig wasps despite the cessation of an O3 episode. These findings illustrate that O3 episodes can affect pollinator behavior, which may have detrimental implications for pollination systems. It is, therefore, of importance to assess the effects of O3 on insect behavior in order to predict how it could modify ecological interactions and species biodiversity in ecosystems.
