This paper presents an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm that incorporates hybrid elite pool strategies to address the limitations of the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). In AOA, the linear mathematical optimization acceleration (MOA) function cannot balance global exploitation and local exploration well. Therefore, the accuracy and convergence speed of the algorithm cannot be guaranteed. To improve the performance of AOA, this paper reconstructed a nonlinear MOA function, which is expected to balance the exploitation and the exploration of AOA. Furthermore, four hybrid elite pool strategies are integrated to enhance the ability to escape local optima. The proposed algorithm inherits the fast convergence of AOA and develops the performance of escaping local optima. Numerical experiment results on benchmark functions and engineering problems show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other compared meta-heuristic algorithms in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. The convergence rate has been widely accepted as a performance measure for choosing a better metaheuristic algorithm. So, we propose a novel technique to improve the performance of the existing Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm in terms of its convergence rate. The proposed approach also prioritizes the test cases that are obtained after executing the input benchmark programs. This paper has three technical contributions. In our first contribution, we generate test cases for the input benchmark programs. Our second contribution prioritizes test cases using an improved version of the existing GWO algorithm (CGWO). Our third contribution analyzes the obtained result and compares it with state-of-the-art metaheuristic techniques. This work is validated after running the proposed model on six benchmark programs. The obtained results show that our proposed approach has achieved 48% better APFD score for the prioritized order of test cases than the non-prioritized order. When the meta-heuristic algorithm solves the joint resource allocation problem of multi-beam satellites, the computational complexity increases and the algorithm is difficult to converge due to the time delay constraint and capacity constraint. This paper introduced a penalty mechanism in the objective function, and added a penalty value to the objective function of the invalid solution, so that the optimized solution adaptively satisfied these two constraints. Based on this, this paper proposed a joint resource allocation algorithm based on quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. Simulation results show that the introduction of the penalty strategy solves the problem of difficulty in handling the delay constraint and capacity constraint when applying the meta-heuristic algorithm. The quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm with penalty mechanism outperforms the existing joint allocation algorithm in terms of allocation fairness index and total system capacity. The pursuit of achieving total power network observability in smart grids using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) carries a significant promise of real-time Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control (WAMPAC). PMU applications eliminate periodical measurements, thereby increasing accuracy through a high sampling rate of the measured power systems quantities. The high costs of installation of PMUs for total power system observability presents a challenge in the implementation of PMUs. This is due to the expensive costs of PMU devices. This has led to a prominent optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem that researchers tirelessly aim to solve by ensuring a complete power network observability while using the least installed PMU devices possible. In this paper, a novel Binary Firefly Algorithm (BFA) based on the node degree centrality scores of each bus is proposed to minimize PMU installations. The BFA solves the OPP problem in consideration of the effect of Zero Injection Buses (ZIBs) under normal operation and single PMU outage (SPO). The robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE-approved test systems and visualized with a force-directed technique on an undirected power network graph. The proposed BFA yields the same but better optimal PMU numbers, obtained by existing meta-heuristic optimization techniques found in the literature for each of the IEEE test cases, as well as highlighting the cost–benefit of having a robust system against single PMU loss while considering the ZIB effect for an improved system measurement availability. Unconstrained continuous large-scale global optimization (LSGO) is still a challenging task for a wide range of modern metaheuristic approaches. A cooperative coevolution approach is a good tool for increasing the performance of an evolutionary algorithm in solving high-dimensional optimization problems. However, the performance of cooperative coevolution approaches for LSGO depends significantly on the problem decomposition, namely, on the number of subcomponents and on how variables are grouped in these subcomponents. Also, the choice of the population size is still an open question for population-based algorithms. This paper discusses a method for selecting the number of subcomponents and the population size during the optimization process ("on fly") from a predefined pool of parameters. The selection of the parameters is based on their performance in the previous optimization steps. The main goal of the study is the improvement of coevolutionary decomposition-based algorithms for solving LSGO problems. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adapt evolutionary algorithm for solving continuous LSGO problems. We have tested this algorithm on 15 optimization problems from the IEEE LSGO CEC'2013 benchmark suite. Human facial analysis (HFA) has recently become an attractive topic for computer vision research due to technological progress and mobile applications. HFA explores several issues as gender recognition (GR), facial expression, age, and race recognition for automatically understanding social life. This study explores HFA from the angle of recognizing a person's gender from their face. Several hard challenges are provoked, such as illumination, occlusion, facial emotions, quality, and angle of capture by cameras, making gender recognition more difficult for machines. The Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) was recently designed as a metaheuristic-based population optimization method, inspired by the Archimedes theory's physical notion. Compared to other swarm algorithms in the realm of optimization, this method promotes a good balance between exploration and exploitation. The convergence area is increased By incorporating extra data into the solution, such as volume and density. Because of the preceding benefits of AOA and the fact that it has not been used to choose the best area of the face, we propose utilizing a wrapper feature selection technique, which is a real motivation in the field of computer vision and machine learning. The paper's primary purpose is to automatically determine the optimal face area using AOA to recognize the gender of a human person categorized by two classes (Men and women). In this paper, the facial image is divided into several subregions (blocks), where each area provides a vector of characteristics using one method from handcrafted techniques as the local binary pattern (LBP), histogram-oriented gradient (HOG), or gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). Two experiments assess the proposed method (AOA): The first employs two benchmarking datasets: the Georgia Tech Face dataset (GT) and the Brazilian FEI dataset. The second experiment represents a more challenging large dataset that uses Gallagher's uncontrolled dataset. The experimental results show the good performance of AOA compared to other recent and competitive optimizers for all datasets. In this paper, a new Modified Meta-Heuristic algorithm is proposed. This method contains some modifications to improve the performance of the simulated-annealing algorithm (SA). Most authors who deal with improving the SA algorithm presented some improvements and modifications to one or more of the five standard features of the SA algorithm. In this paper, we improve the SA algorithm by presenting some suggestions and modifications to all five standard features of the SA algorithm. Through these suggestions and modifications, we obtained a new algorithm that finds the approximate solution to the global minimum of a non-convex function. The new algorithm contains novel parameters, which are updated at each iteration. Therefore, the variety and alternatives in choosing these parameters demonstrated a noticeable impact on the performance of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, it has multiple formulas by which the candidate solutions are generated. Diversity in these formulas helped the proposed algorithm to escape a local point while finding the global minimizer of a non-convex function. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is reported through extensive numerical experiments on some well-known test problems. The performance profiles are used to evaluate and compare the performance of our proposed algorithm against the other five meta-heuristic algorithms. The comparison results between the performance of our suggested algorithm and the other five algorithms indicate that the proposed algorithm is competitive with, and in all cases superior to, the five algorithms in terms of the efficiency, reliability, and effectiveness for finding the global minimizers of non-convex functions. With the rapid growth of the number of web services on the Internet, various service providers provide many similar services with the same function but different quality of service (QoS) attributes. It is a key problem to be solved urgently to select the service composition quickly, meeting the users' QoS requirements from many candidate services. Optimization of web service composition is an NP-hard issue and intelligent optimization algorithms have become the mainstream method to solve this complex problem. This paper proposed a hybrid strategy improved whale optimization algorithm, which is based on the concepts of chaos initialization, nonlinear convergence factor and mutation. By maintaining a balance between exploration and exploitation, the problem of slow or early convergence is overcome to a certain extent. To evaluate its performance more accurately, the proposed algorithm was first tested on a set of standard benchmarks. After, simulations were performed using the real quality of web service dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is better than the original version and other meta-heuristic algorithms on average, as well as verifies the feasibility and stability of web service composition optimization. The efficiency and the effectiveness of a machine learning (ML) model are greatly influenced by feature selection (FS), a crucial preprocessing step in machine learning that seeks out the ideal set of characteristics with the maximum accuracy possible. Due to their dominance over traditional optimization techniques, researchers are concentrating on a variety of metaheuristic (or evolutionary) algorithms and trying to suggest cutting-edge hybrid techniques to handle FS issues. The use of hybrid metaheuristic approaches for FS has thus been the subject of numerous research works. The purpose of this paper is to critically assess the existing hybrid FS approaches and to give a thorough literature review on the hybridization of different metaheuristic/evolutionary strategies that have been employed for supporting FS. This article reviews pertinent documents on hybrid frameworks that were published in the period from 2009 to 2022 and offers a thorough analysis of the used techniques, classifiers, datasets, applications, assessment metrics, and schemes of hybridization. Meta-heuristic algorithms are widely used in complex problems that cannot be solved by traditional computing methods due to their powerful optimization capabilities. However, for high-complexity problems, the fitness function evaluation may take hours or even days to complete. The surrogate-assisted meta-heuristic algorithm effectively solves this kind of long solution time for the fitness function. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient surrogate-assisted hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm by combining the surrogate-assisted model with gannet optimization algorithm (GOA) and the differential evolution (DE) algorithm, abbreviated as SAGD. We explicitly propose a new add-point strategy based on information from historical surrogate models, using information from historical surrogate models to allow the selection of better candidates for the evaluation of true fitness values and the local radial basis function (RBF) surrogate to model the landscape of the objective function. The control strategy selects two efficient meta-heuristic algorithms to predict the training model samples and perform updates. A generation-based optimal restart strategy is also incorporated in SAGD to select suitable samples to restart the meta-heuristic algorithm. We tested the SAGD algorithm using seven commonly used benchmark functions and the wireless sensor network (WSN) coverage problem. The photovoltaic(PV) system's efficiency can be improved with the aid of effective solar PV cell modeling. However, flawed solar cell parameters affect PV cell modeling incorrectly. The manufacturers are usually not providing all the necessary data for the exact modeling of PV cells. It is therefore necessary to efficiently predict the parameters of the PV cell. The literature discusses various optimization algorithms, but the suboptimal outcomes are obtained by most of the algorithms due to their convergence toward local minima. This paper introduces a new stochastic optimization algorithm for the estimation of solar PV cell parameters. Therefore, for the evaluation of the solar cell, a new novel chaotic algorithm is introduced in this paper called the chaotic tunicate swarm algorithm (CTSA). The proposed algorithm has a new function called an outstanding mathematical model of adaptive weights to stimulate negative and positive inputs from the spreading wave in order to find the best way to connect food with an excellent exploitation tendency and exploratory ability. For the double‐diode model, the computation time of the chaotic variants (CTSA1‐1.1885, CTSA2‐1.2502, CTSA3‐1.2962, CTSA4‐1.1204, and CTSA5‐1.2214) is better than the rest of the compared algorithms (particle swarm optimization [PSO]‐17.4532, tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA)‐2.5278, Harris hawks optimization [HHO]‐10.8942, ant lion optimizer [ALO]‐15.0214, and atom search optimization [ASO]‐9.5214). For the triple‐diode model, the computation time of the chaotic variants (CTSA1‐1.2658, CTSA2‐1.3520, CTSA3‐1.3056, CTSA4‐1.2290, and CTSA5‐1.3859) is better than the rest of the compared algorithms (PSO‐18.5421, TSA‐3.2568, HHO‐9.8754, ALO‐13.5841, and ASO‐11.8412). Recent advancements in computer science include some optimization models that have been developed and used in real applications. Some metaheuristic search/optimization algorithms have been tested to obtain optimal solutions to speed controller applications in self-driving cars. Some metaheuristic algorithms are based on social behaviour, resulting in several search models, functions, and parameters, and thus algorithm-specific strengths and weaknesses. The present paper proposes a fitness function on the basis of the mathematical description of proportional integrative derivate controllers showing that mean square error is not always the best measure when looking for a solution to the problem. The fitness developed in this paper contains features and equations from the mathematical background of proportional integrative derivative controllers to calculate the best performance of the system. Such results are applied to quantitatively evaluate the performance of twenty-one optimization algorithms. Furthermore, improved versions of the fitness function are considered, in order to investigate which aspects are enhanced by applying the optimization algorithms. Results show that the right fitness function is a key point to get a good performance, regardless of the chosen algorithm. The aim of this paper is to present a novel objective function to carry out optimizations of the gains of a PID controller, using several computational intelligence techniques to perform the optimizations. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have evolved as a beneficial machine learning method that has been successfully used in various applications. Currently, DNN is a superior technique of extracting information from massive sets of data in a self-organized method. DNNs have different structures and parameters, which are usually produced for particular applications. Nevertheless, the training procedures of DNNs can be protracted depending on the given application and the size of the training set. Further, determining the most precise and practical structure of a deep learning method in a reasonable time is a possible problem related to this procedure. Meta-heuristics techniques, such as swarm intelligence (SI) and evolutionary computing (EC), represent optimization frames with specific theories and objective functions. These methods are adjustable and have been demonstrated their effectiveness in various applications; hence, they can optimize the DNNs models. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the recent optimization methods (i.e., SI and EC) employed to enhance DNNs performance on various tasks. This paper also analyzes the importance of optimization methods in generating the optimal hyper-parameters and structures of DNNs in taking into consideration massive-scale data. One of the useful knowledge representation tools, which can describe the joint probability distribution between some random variables with a graphical model and can be trained by a dataset, is the Bayesian network (BN). A BN is composed of a network structure and a conditional probability distribution table for each node. Discovering an optimal BN structure is an NP‐hard optimization problem that various meta‐heuristic algorithms are applied to solve this problem by researchers. The genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, evolutionary programming, artificial bee colony, and bacterial foraging optimization are some of the meta‐heuristic methods to solve this problem using a dataset. Most of these methods are applying a scoring metric to generate the best network structure from a set of candidates. A Fixed Structure Learning Automata‐Based (FSLA‐B) algorithm is presented in this paper to solve the structure learning problem of BNs. There is a fixed structure learning automaton for each pair of vertices in the BN's graph structure in the proposed algorithm. The action of this automaton determines the presence and direction of an edge between the vertices. The proposed algorithm performs a guided search procedure using the FSLA and escapes from local optimums. Several datasets are utilised in this paper to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. By performing various experiments, multiple meta‐heuristic algorithms are compared with the introduced new one. The optimization problems are becoming more complicated, requiring new and efficient optimization techniques to solve them. Many bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms have emerged in the last decade to solve these complex problems as most of these algorithms may be trapped into local optima and could not effectively solve all types of optimization problems. Hence, researchers are still trying to develop new and better optimization algorithms. This paper introduces a novel biologically-based optimization algorithm called circulatory system-based optimization (CSBO). CSBO is modeled based on the function of the body's blood vessels with two distinctive circuits, i.e. pulmonary and systemic circuits. The proposed CSBO algorithm is tested on a wide variety of complex functions of the real world and validated with the standard meta-heuristic algorithms. In this paper, a new stochastic optimization algorithm is introduced, called Driving Training-Based Optimization (DTBO), which mimics the human activity of driving training. The fundamental inspiration behind the DTBO design is the learning process to drive in the driving school and the training of the driving instructor. DTBO is mathematically modeled in three phases: (1) training by the driving instructor, (2) patterning of students from instructor skills, and (3) practice. The performance of DTBO in optimization is evaluated on a set of 53 standard objective functions of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, and IEEE CEC2017 test functions types. The optimization results show that DTBO has been able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems by maintaining a proper balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance quality of DTBO is compared with the results of 11 well-known algorithms. Wireless powered communication network (WPCN) is a promising technique to resolve the power constraint issue faced by wireless nodes at the same time it also provides green and a safer solution. This paper studies, mutual sharing between WPCN and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer model where optimal resource allocation occurs between licensed/bandwidth group and an unlicensed/power group to enhance the system performance. The main aim of this paper is to maximize system weighted sum rate and minimize power consumption during transmission by optimal time allocation and energy beamforming vector allocation. These multiobjective combinatorial problems are solved using joint metaheuristic particle swarm optimization-cuckoo search algorithm to provide an optimal solution. The results are compared using a conventional mathematical optimization algorithm to set as a baseline for performance parameters. The obtained results demonstrate that the efficient joint metaheuristic approach provides a significant gain in the system performance and also offers a computationally less complex approach for solving a complicated non-convex multiobjective problem of wireless powered network. Accurate and effective wind power prediction plays an important role in wind power generation, distribution, and management. Inthis paper, a hybrid algorithm based on gradient descent and meta-heuristic optimization is designed to improve the accuracy of prediction and reduce the computational burden. The hybrid algorithm includes three steps: in the first step, we use the gradient descent algorithm to get the initial parameters. Secondly, we input the initial parameters into the meta-heuristic optimization algorithm to search for the "best parameters" (high-quality inferior solutions). Finally, we input optimized parameters into the RMSProp optimization algorithm and conduct gradient descent again to find a better solution. We used 2021 wind power data from Guangxi, China for the experiment. The rapid growing number of web services has posed new challenges for service composition computing. How to combine services that meet the needs of users in the least amount of time from a huge number of candidate services is a hot topic of research today. As a meta-heuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems, salp swarm algorithm (SSA) has been widely applied to case scenarios in different fields due to its simple structure and high performance. However, QoS-aware service composition is a discrete problem and existing methods are not suitable for it. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an improved SSA integrating chaotic mapping method for QoS service composition selection, named CSSA. Through the randomness and ergodicity of chaos, reducing the possibility of falling into local optimum and strengthening the exploitation capability of the algorithm. In addition, a fuzzy continuous neighborhood search method is used to enhance the local search capability of the algorithm which makes the discrete space of service composition in a way similar to continuous space. Finally, two well-known datasets are used to verify the effectiveness of CSSA compared to three advanced algorithms and original SSA. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems are representing the most attractive source of energy, especially with the continuous reduction of manufacturing costs. The new systems' sizing and cost estimation depend mainly on the accurate modeling of the PV cells. The modeling of the PV cells is based on one-diode modeling with five unknown parameters or the more accurate modeling based on two-diode modeling that have seven unknown parameters, or with a higher number of shunt diodes modeling with a higher number of unknown parameters. An accurate and fast estimation of the PV cell parameters will help designers to build their decision based on accurate results, where any small variation of these parameters can spoil the results obtained from the modeling and can produce an unwise decision. A high number of studies are introduced in the literature to estimate these parameters. These studies are different in the accuracy of results and the time consumed to get these results. Some of these studies used metaheuristic algorithms which are characterized by slow convergence and may cause inaccurate results. For this reason, a recent optimization algorithm called the musical chairs algorithm (MCA) is introduced in this paper to estimate these parameters faster and more accurately than many metaheuristic algorithms. The idea behind the use of MCA is to have a high number of search agents in the beginning to enhance the exploration and continuously reduce this number to enhance exploitation at the end of optimization and reduce the convergence time. The results obtained from using 10 optimization algorithms showed that the error associated with MCA is 20% of the average error of the other optimization algorithms. Moreover, the MCA never misses the global minimum of error which was not the case in other optimization algorithms. The MCA obtained these results in 40% of the time consumed by other optimization algorithms. These results of the MCA showed its superiority compared to other optimization algorithms. The arithmetic optimization algorithm is a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm. In this paper, an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm (IAOA) based on the population control strategy is introduced to solve numerical optimization problems. By classifying the population and adaptively controlling the number of individuals in the subpopulation, the information of each individual can be used effectively, which speeds up the algorithm to find the optimal value, avoids falling into local optimum, and improves the accuracy of the solution. The performance of the proposed IAOA algorithm is evaluated on six systems of nonlinear equations, ten integrations, and engineering problems. The PID control algorithm for balancing robot attitude control suffers from the problem of difficult parameter tuning. Previous studies have proposed using metaheuristic algorithms to tune the PID parameters. However, traditional metaheuristic algorithms are subject to the criticism of premature convergence and the possibility of falling into local optimum solutions. Therefore, the present paper proposes a CFHBA-PID algorithm for balancing robot Dual-loop PID attitude control based on Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) and CF-ITAE. On the one hand, HBA maintains a sufficiently large population diversity throughout the search process and employs a dynamic search strategy for balanced exploration and exploitation, effectively avoiding the problems of classical intelligent optimization algorithms and serving as a global search. On the other hand, a novel complementary factor (CF) is proposed to complement integrated time absolute error (ITAE) with the overshoot amount, resulting in a new rectification indicator CF-ITAE, which balances the overshoot amount and the response time during parameter tuning. Using balancing robot as the experimental object, HBA-PID is compared with AOA-PID, WOA-PID, and PSO-PID, and the results demonstrate that HBA-PID outperforms the other three algorithms in terms of overshoot amount, stabilization time, ITAE, and convergence speed, proving that the algorithm combining HBA with PID is better than the existing mainstream algorithms. The comparative experiments using CF prove that CFHBA-PID is able to effectively control the overshoot amount in attitude control. Over the last decade, the size and complexity of real-world problems have grown dramatically, necessitating more effective tools. Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have proven to be a promising tool for solving such problems due to their performance in a variety of fields. JAYA algorithm is a novel population-based algorithm which could have been able to present reliable results. This is because it does not need any parameters to be set other than the population size and the maximum number of iteration. Despite its positive feedbacks, this algorithm should be modified to witness more efficiency. This paper aims to amend the original version of Jaya to present a high-efficiency version named Powerful Enhanced Jaya (PEJAYA). In other words, the methodology of updating position in Jaya is modified to enhance the convergence and search capabilities. This approach is assessed according to solve 20 well-known benchmark functions, feature selection, and statistical tests. The output results of proposed optimization algorithm are then evaluated by comparing it with other recent algorithms including crow search algorithm (CSA), standard version of JAYA, particle swarm optimization (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), moth-flame optimization (MFO) and sine–cosine algorithm (SCA). This paper presents a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the geometrical features of circles, called the circle search algorithm (CSA). The circle is the most well-known geometric object, with various features including diameter, center, perimeter, and tangent lines. The ratio between the radius and the tangent line segment is the orthogonal function of the angle opposite to the orthogonal radius. This angle plays an important role in the exploration and exploitation behavior of the CSA. To evaluate the robustness of the CSA in comparison to other algorithms, many independent experiments employing 23 famous functions and 3 real engineering problems were carried out. The statistical results revealed that the CSA succeeded in achieving the minimum fitness values for 21 out of the tested 23 functions, and the p-value was less than 0.05. The results evidence that the CSA converged to the minimum results faster than the comparative algorithms. Furthermore, high-dimensional functions were used to assess the CSA's robustness, with statistical results revealing that the CSA is robust to high-dimensional problems. This paper proposes a target specialized meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Mixture Design Threshold Accepting (MDTA) algorithm, which applies the idea of the Threshold Accepting to generate the corresponding approximate D-optimal designs for a wide range of mixture models, with or without constraints imposed on the components. The MDTA algorithm is tested by many of common mixture models, among which some even have no solutions of the D-optimal design available in the literature. Other tests include 5 models with specific upper bound constraints. These results prove that the MDTA algorithm is very efficient in finding D-optimal designs for mixture models. In some scenarios it even outperforms the state-of-art algorithms, such as the ProjPSO algorithm and the REX algorithm. In this paper, a novel optimization algorithm is proposed by hybridizing firefly and whale optimization algorithms and it is applied to the problem of determining optimal design parameters of model predictive control. The developed hybrid algorithm is compared with firefly and whale optimization algorithms considering unimodal, multimodal, composite and CEC-C06 2019 benchmark optimization problems in terms of statistical analysis. Comparison results showed that hybrid algorithm has the best performance for approximately 67% of 39 benchmark functions in finding the minimum in an average of independent 100 experiments for each function. For the functions in which the proposed algorithm gives the best results, approximately 64% improvement is achieved compared to FA and 39% improvement compared to WOA. In terms of convergence speed, in average 2% of improvement is obtained. As an application to engineering problems, optimization of parameters of the model predictive control for inverted pendulum and distillation column is considered and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the performances of firefly algorithm and whale optimization algorithm. For the considered applications, a novel objective function is selected. The selected objective function for hybrid firefly–whale optimization algorithm enables finding the optimal prediction horizon and control horizon as well as the Q and R matrices such that the system responses satisfy desired settling time and maximum overshoot criteria. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is one of the efficient recent meta‐heuristic optimization algorithms, where it has been successfully utilized in a wide range of optimization problems in different fields. In the research process, it is found that it is very difficult to maintain the balance between the exploration and exploitation capabilities of a certain algorithm. Therefore, one of the main purposes of this article is to provide an algorithm that can intelligently balance between exploration and exploitation, so that it can balance exploration and exploitation capabilities. Later, in the research process, it was found that the sine and cosine function and the salp foraging trajectory have a high mathematical similarity, which greatly improves the optimization ability of the algorithm. In addition, the variable neighbourhood strategy can appropriately expand the optimization range of the algorithm. So in this paper, a novel golden sine cosine salp swarm algorithm with variable neighbourhood search scheme (GSCSSA‐VNS) is proposed, the another objective of proposing this algorithm is as a new optimization method for shape matching. As a relatively new branch, atomic potential matching (APM) model is inspired by potential field attractions. Compared to the conventional edge potential function (EPF) model, APM has been verified to be less sensitive to intricate backgrounds in the test image and far more cost effective in the computation process. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm which is mathematically modelled by amalgamating the superior features of recently developed Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), and Crow Search Algorithm (CSA). Researchers have already implemented the aforementioned three algorithms and obtained superior quality results for solving diverse optimization problems. The novel hybrid Variegated GWO Algorithm (VGWO) developed in this proposed research work is initially realized and validated for solving IEEE CEC-C06 2019 benchmark functions. Thereafter, the proposed VGWO is utilized as an optimization tool to solve three emerging and complex power system optimization problems which includes energy management of microgrid systems operated in both islanded and grid-connected mode, dynamic economic emission dispatch and reactive power planning (RPP) problem. A comparative analysis of the proposed VGWO approach with other established metaheuristics is undertaken for each optimization problem. Numerical results show that the novel hybrid VGWO algorithm outperformed an ample number of optimization techniques in providing better quality solutions. The proposed hybrid algorithm yielded a 36.93% reduction in active power loss and 36.80% reduction in operating cost with respect to base case condition for RPP problem. Likewise while solving microgrid energy management problems 9–30% savings was realized in the generation cost compared to the ones mentioned in literature. The capability of handling many complex constraints within a minimum amount of computational time to provide consistently best solutions prioritize the proposed hybrid algorithm among its kinds. The introduction of cloud computing has brought about significant developments in information technology. Users can benefit from the multitude of cloud technology services only by connecting to the internet. In cloud computing, load balancing is the fundamental issue that has challenged experts in this research area. Load balancing helps increase user satisfaction and enhance systems' productivity through efficient and fair work assignments between computing resources. Besides, maintaining a load balancing among resources would be difficult because the resources are usually distributed in a heterogeneous way. Many load-balancing methods try to solve this problem by the metaheuristics algorithm, and each of them attempted to enhance the operation and efficiency of systems. In this paper, Grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm has been used based on the resource reliability capability to maintain proper load balancing. In this method, first, the GWO algorithm tries to find the unemployed or busy nodes and, after discovering this node, try to calculate each node's threshold and fitness function. Butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA) is a novel nature-inspired metaheuristics algorithm proposed in recent years. The basic BOA is slow convergence, low accuracy and easy to fall into local optimum. To solve the above problem of basic BOA, this paper proposed an adaptive butterfly optimization algorithm based on mutation strategies ( ABO A-MS) . Firstly, it introduced the strategy of adjust the conversion probability dynamically, which effectively balanced the ability of the global exploration and local search, by means of dynamically adjusting the switching probability of the change information of iteration times and individual fitness. Secondly, it introduced the adaptive inertia weight strategy and local mutation strategy. It applied the inertia weight value and chaotic memory weight factor, which further improved the diversity of this algorithm, and effectively avoided its precocious convergence, as well as accelerated its convergence speed and solving accuracy. In order to verify the optimization performance of the modified algorithm, it carried out the simulation experiments among the modified algorithm, the basic BOA algorithm, the particle swarm optimization algorithm, the salp swarm algorithm, the gray wolf optimization and the others. Class imbalance problems have attracted the research community, but a few works have focused on feature selection with imbalanced datasets. To handle class imbalance problems, we developed a novel fitness function for feature selection using the chaotic salp swarm optimization algorithm, an efficient meta-heuristic optimization algorithm that has been successfully used in a wide range of optimization problems. This paper proposes an AdaBoost algorithm with chaotic salp swarm optimization. The most discriminating features are selected using salp swarm optimization, and AdaBoost classifiers are thereafter trained on the features selected. This paper propounds a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm to obtain the optimum site and size of distributed generation (DG) in radial distribution system (RDS). This problem is concomitant with reducing the active power loss, the total voltage deviation and the voltage stability index of the RDS considering different types of load models (such as constant power (CP), industrial (IL), residential (RES) as well as commercial (COM)). To solve this weighting factor-based multi-objective DG allocation problem, a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm, student psychology-based optimization (SPBO), is suggested in this article. A multi-criteria approach (such as the analytic hierarchy process) is employed to optimize the weighting factors involved. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that this novel SPBO algorithm is being used for optimal siting and sizing of DGs in the RDS for different types of load models (like CP, IL, RES and COM) for IEEE 33-bus, IEEE 69-bus and practical Brazil 136-bus RDS. The simulation results attained by the proposed SPBO algorithm are compared with the results provided by recently surfaced Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm and other state-of-the-art algorithms. This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. Metaheuristic algorithms have known vast development in recent years. And their applicability in engineering projects is constantly growing; however, their deferent exploration and exploitation techniques cause the engineering problems to favor some algorithms over others. This paper studies damage identification in steel plates using Frequency Response Function (FRF) damage indicator to detect and localize the healthy and damaged structure. The study is formulated as an inverse analysis, investigating the performance of three new metaheuristic algorithms of Wild Horse Optimizer (WHO), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), and Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA). The objective function is based on measured and calculated FRF damage indicators. The results showed that the case of four damages with different damage severity levels presented a good challenge where the HWO algorithm was shown to have the best performance. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. A novel nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm, called the quantum firefly algorithm, is proposed in this paper. The algorithm imitates (a) the social behaviour of fireflies mating in nature, (b) laws of quantum physics, and (c) laws of natural evolution. The algorithm combines the powers of two well-known algorithms: the firefly algorithm and the quantum genetic algorithm. The proposed quantum firefly algorithm's performance is tested on 15 mathematical test functions and one structural design problem. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. The Sine-Cosine algorithm (SCA) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm utilizing sine and cosine functions to perform search. To enable the search process, SCA incorporates several search parameters. But sometimes, these parameters make the search in SCA vulnerable to local minima/maxima. To overcome this problem, a new Multi Sine-Cosine algorithm (MSCA) is proposed in this paper. MSCA utilizes multiple swarm clusters to diversify & intensify the search in-order to avoid the local minima/maxima problem. Secondly, during update MSCA also checks for better search clusters that offer convergence to global minima effectively. To assess its performance, we tested the MSCA on unimodal, multimodal and composite benchmark functions taken from the literature. Experimental results reveal that the MSCA is statistically superior with regards to convergence as compared to recent state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms, including the original SCA. Artificial neural network (ANN) is modeled to predict and classify problems. However, in the training phase of ANNs discovering faultless values of the weights of a network is extremely troublesome. Traditional weight updating methods often get stuck into local optima and converge to optimal solutions very slowly. Therefore, to overcome these drawbacks a modified version of a nature-based algorithm which merges meta-heuristics with weight-updating technique of ANN has been used in this paper. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a well-established, efficient and competitive algorithm inspired by the hunting mechanism of the whales including their behavior in finding and attacking their prey with their bubble-net feeding technique. In WOA, the next location of the search individuals or whales is modified depending on some probability. Due to the high exploration rate of WOA, there is a disproportion between exploration and exploitation in the WOA and it also converges to the solution slowly. Thus, to establish an equilibrium between exploration and exploitation a new variant of WOA called modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is proposed to overcome the problem of delayed convergence. In MWOA, roulette wheel selection is combined with WOA to enhance the convergence speed of WOA. MWOA is tested on 11 benchmark functions, and the outcomes are compared with WOA. The results prove that MWOA has gained success in overcoming the problem of the slow convergence of WOA. This paper discusses a new variant of Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO) Algorithm, called Hybrid HGSO (HHGSO). Unlike its predecessor, HHGSO allows multiple clusters serving different individual meta-heuristic algorithms (i.e., with its own defined parameters and local best) to coexist within the same population. Exploiting the dynamic cluster-to-algorithm mapping via penalized and reward model with adaptive switching factor, HHGSO offers a novel approach for meta-heuristic hybridization consisting of Jaya Algorithm, Sooty Tern Optimization Algorithm, Butterfly Optimization Algorithm, and Owl Search Algorithm, respectively. The gaining sharing knowledge based optimization algorithm (GSK) is recently developed metaheuristic algorithm, which is based on how humans acquire and share knowledge during their life-time. This paper investigates a modified version of the GSK algorithm to find the best feature subsets. Firstly, it represents a binary variant of GSK algorithm by employing a probability estimation operator (Bi-GSK) on the two main pillars of GSK algorithm. And then, the chaotic maps are used to enhance the performance of the proposed algorithm. Ten different types of chaotic maps are considered to adapt the parameters of the GSK algorithm that make a proper balance between exploration and exploitation and save the algorithm from premature convergence. To check the performance of proposed approaches of GSK algorithm, twenty-one benchmark datasets are taken from the UCI repository for feature selection. The performance is measured by calculating different type of measures, and several metaheuristic algorithms are adopted to compare the obtained results. The results indicate that Chebyshev chaotic map shows the best result among all chaotic maps which improve the performance accuracy and convergence rate of the original algorithm. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. The test results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits good exploration and exploitation capabilities. Further, this algorithm also outperforms other algorithms in solving multimodal optimization problems. Meta-heuristic algorithms have shown promising results in solving various optimization problems. The crow search algorithm (CSA) is a new and effective meta-heuristic algorithm that emulates crows' intelligent group behavior in nature. However, it suffers from several problems, such as trapping into local optimum and premature convergence. This paper proposes an improved crow search algorithm (ICSA), which has been tested and evaluated by a set of well-known benchmark functions. A new update mechanism that uses the merits of the global best position to move toward the best position is proposed. This mechanism increases the convergence of the algorithm and improves its local search-ability. Twenty benchmark functions are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed ICSA. Moreover, the ICSA algorithm is compared with the conventional CSA and other meta-heuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), gray wolf optimizer (GWO), moth-flame optimization (MFO), and sine-cosine algorithm (SCA). A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. Experimental results show that ARSCA outperforms its competitors in both the solution quality and the ability to jump out of the local optimum. This makes the original SCA appear to have insufficient optimization capability and likely to fall into premature convergence. A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. Experimental results show that ARSCA outperforms its competitors in both the solution quality and the ability to jump out of the local optimum. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a new advanced algorithm that is based on the humpback whale chasing process. The main problem addressed by Whale Optimization Algorithm, similar to other metaheuristic algorithms, is premature convergence. This paper introduces the Sine Cosine Algorithm in the Whale Optimization Algorithm optimization process to enhance global convergence and to improve enactment. The proposed algorithm, called WOA-SCA, has local optima evasion of Whale Optimization Algorithm and high capability to increase the exploration. The implementation of the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm is investigated through a series of tests on common benchmark test functions, with the results compared to those of six alternative algorithms. The results of the investigations show that the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm works better in concert with the outputs of the benchmark functions. Also, to validate the proficiencies of the WOA-SCA, it has been used to resolve the real-world problem of Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). The field of facial emotion recognition is a fascinating new area of research that gives us the ability to identify the human face's expression in natural settings. A large part of the standard methodologies certainly does not indicate the looks because the attitudes depend on the human face sections' behaviors. The paper proposes the efficient Facial Emotion Recognition method using MultiSVNNN based on WOA-SCA (the proposed WOA-SCA based Multi-Support Vector Neural Network). Using the ADFES dataset for the disgust expression, our results demonstrate that the proposed work yields average emotion recognition accuracy of 98% associated to 80% and 96% based on BBPSO and MFOPSO, respectively. We introduce a multidimensional multiblock clustering (MDMBC) algorithm in this paper. MDMBC can generate overlapping clusters with similar values along clusters of dimensions. The parsimonious binary vector representation of multidimensional clusters lends itself to the application of efficient meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. In this paper, a hill-climbing (HC) greedy search algorithm has been presented that can be extended by several stochastic and population-based meta-heuristic frameworks. The benefits of the algorithm are demonstrated in a bi-clustering benchmark problem and in the analysis of the Leiden higher education ranking system, which measures the scientific performance of 903 institutions along four dimensions of 20 indicators representing publication output and collaboration in different scientific fields and time periods. • Multiblock clustering algorithm generates overlapping clusters along clusters of dimensions. • Generalized parsimonious binary vector-based representation for higher-dimensions. • The proposed algorithms are demonstrated via an open multidimensional dataset.
