An assessment was performed for elucidating the possible impact of different aeration strategies on the carbon footprint of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant. Using a calibrated model, the impact of different aeration strategies was simulated. The ammonia controller tested showed its ability in ensuring effluent ammonia concentrations compliant with regulation along with significant savings on aeration energy, compared to fixed oxygen set point (DO sp ) control strategies. At the same time, nitrous oxide emissions increased due to accumulation of nitrification intermediates. Nevertheless, when coupled with the carbon dioxide emissions due to electrical energy consumption for aeration, the overall carbon footprint was only marginally affected. Using the local average CO 2 emission factor, ammonia control slightly reduced the carbon footprint with respect to the scenario where DO sp was fixed at 2 mg·L -1 . Conversely, no significant change could be detected when compared against the scenarios where the DO sp was fixed. Overall, the actual impact of ammonia control on the carbon footprint compared to other aeration strategies was found to be strictly connected to the sources of energy employed, where the larger amount of low CO 2 -emitting energy is, the higher the relative increase in the carbon footprint will be.

The recovery of livestock manure, rich in nutrients, as fertilizer in agriculture, could pose the risk of an excessive load of nitrogen on the soil. Ammonia stripping is one of the available technologies for reducing the amount of nitrogen in the digestate obtained by the anaerobic digestion of manure. The study investigated the performance and energy consumption of a full-scale ammonia-stripping plant, equipped with a bubble reactor and working without the use of any alkaline reagent under semi-batch conditions. Stripping tests were conducted on the liquid fraction of the digestate, studying the current and optimized operative conditions of the plant. The main variables influencing the process were pH, temperature, airflow, and feed characteristics. In the experimental tests, the pH spontaneously increased to 10, without dosing basifying agents. Higher temperatures favoured the stripping process, the higher tested value being 68 °C. The airflow was kept equal to 15 Nm3 h−1 m−3digestate in the pre-stripping and to 60 Nm3 h−1 m−3digestate in the stripping reactors, during all tests. The energy requirement was completely satisfied by the CHP (combined heat and power) unit fed with the biogas produced by manure digestion. Results showed anaerobic digestion coupled with stripping to be a suitable solution for removing up to 81% of the ammonium with neither external energy input nor reagent dosage. Thermophilic biological processes proved to be effective in aqueous waste (AW) and high-strength wastewater treatment. In this work, the monitoring of a full-scale aerobic thermophilic biological plant treating various high-strength AW in continuous mode is reported. This paper aims to: (i) provide models to help the AW utility manager in predicting the load of fed pollutants and performances, and (ii) fully investigate nitrogen transformations in biological reactor. Based on the results, the thermophilic sludge in the studied plant was able to degrade Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and remove nitrate nitrogen with very high efficiency (79.3% and 97.1, respectively). The monitoring was conducted following a statistical approach and searched for the possible correlations between the input parameters and the efficiency of removal of the plant. Moreover, a multivariate linear regression was carried out highlighting that the yield value of the removal of COD and nitrogen forms, apart from ammonia, was well explained (R2 = 0.9) by the linear regression against the other monitored parameters. As far as nitrification is concerned, there was, on the one hand, an increase in ammonium ions due to the hydrolysis of the organic substance that occurs in the reactor, and on the other hand, a stripping of the same ammoniacal nitrogen in the form of NH3. While nitrates were effectively removed, according to fluorescent in situ hybridization tests, sludge proved to be formed by minute flocs, where bacteria responsible for the oxidation of ammonium and nitrite seem to be unable to grow.
