Apples are rich in vitamins and dietary fiber and are one of the essential fruits in people's daily diet. China has always been a big apple consumer, and with the improvement of people's life quality, nutrition, and health requirements, the demand for high-quality apples has increased year by year. Apple mold heart disease is one of the main diseases affecting apple quality. However, this disease cannot be easily detected from the surface, so it is difficult to detect mold heart disease. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis of seven non-destructive detection technologies, including near infrared spectroscopy technology, hyperspectral technology, Raman spectroscopy technology, electronic nose technology, acoustic technology, electrical technology, and magnetic technology, summarizes their application status in the detection of apple mold heart disease, and then analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. Combined with the current rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this paper proposes the future development trends of using non-destructive technologies to detect apple mold heart disease. After emerging out of the extensive outsourcing activities of multinational corporations, the virtual factory model is now playing a prominent role in globalization. Using Apple as a case study, this paper explores the concept of a virtual manufacturer. As multinational corporations extensively use intellectual property in emerging markets, they are also concerned about the infringement of intellectual property rights. This study examines this problem that has become increasingly relevant in the context of the protection of intellectual property rights in global value chains and trade. An international index is used to demonstrate that rights to intellectual property are typically excellent in industrialized countries and adequate in the majority of developing countries. As a fruit tree with great economic value, apple is widely cultivated in China. However, apple leaf spot disease causes significant damage to apple quality and economic value. In our study, we found that MdMYB6-like is a transcription factor without auto-activation activity and with three alternative spliced variants. Among them, MdMYB6-like-β responded positively to the pathogen infection. Overexpression of MdMYB6-like-β increased the lignin content of leaves and improved the pathogenic resistance of apple flesh callus. In addition, all three alternative spliced variants of MdMYB6-like could bind to the promoter of MdBGLU H. Therefore, we believe that MdMYB6-like plays an important role in the infection process of the pathogen and lays a solid foundation for breeding disease-resistant cultivars of apple in the future. Apple, which occupies the first position in the world with regard to its yield, is an important economic crop in China. Pruning of apple trees is still dominated by manual pruning, resulting in high labor costs and low efficiency. Additionally, there are some limitations with pruning machines. Thus, research regarding the mechanical properties of apple branches is the basis for the designing proper pruning machine. This paper aims to study the effect of the feed rate, cutting line speed, branch diameter, and moisture content on the cutting force. Results revealed that cutting force depended on the feed rate, cutting line speed, and branch diameter. Furthermore, both the cutting line speed and the branch diameter had a significant effect on the cutting force (p < 0.01), while the feed rate had a small effect on the cutting force (p > 0.05). However, the moisture content had no effect on the cutting force, with a difference of cutting force between samples with moisture content of 15% and 50% less than 5%. Based on the experiments performed, an equation relating the feed rate, the cutting line speed, the branch diameter was derived to calculate the cutting force. By verification test, it established that regression equation was valid with error less than 4%. This study explored the mechanical properties of apple branch, and obtained the optimal cutting parameters, which can provide a reference for the design of the pruning machine. The lack of dwarf stock with good cold resistance has affected the production of apples in northern China. Annual dormant branches of 'Tianhong 2' apple were grafted on 10 different dwarf interstocks (the rootstocks were the seedlings of Malus hupehensis var. Pingyiensis) as test materials. Among these 10 interstocks, Huang 6, 244, NO.1, 53, 24-5, ZC9-3, Jizhen 1 were newly developed by us (Apple Research Group of Hebei Agricultural University), and three interstocks with different degrees of cold resistance (GM256–with strongest cold resistance, SH40–with stronger cold resistance, M9–with poor cold resistance) were used as controls. The semi-lethal temperature (LT50) and related physiological indexes of the branches in the overwintering process were studied. Based on the comprehensive physiological indexes, the effects of 10 interstocks on cold resistance of the 'Tianhong 2' apple were analyzed. The results showed that the effects of 10 kinds of interstocks on the cold resistance of 'Tianhong 2' apple were quite different. The order of effects on cold resistance from strong to weak was as follow: GM256 > Huang 6 > 244 >NO.1> 53 > 24-5 > ZC9-3 >Jizhen 1 > SH40 > M9. The purpose of this study was to screen out the interstocks with strong cold resistance, in order to provide some basis for the selection and utilization of interstocks with strong cold resistance in apple cultivation to further promote the development of the apple industry in China. Apples are a major horticultural crop worldwide. Grafting techniques are widely utilized in apple production to keep the varieties pure. Interstocks are frequently used in Northern China to achieve intensive apple dwarfing cultivation. High-throughput sequencing was used to investigate differentially expressed genes in the phloem tissues of two different xenograft systems, M ('Gala'/'Mac 9'/Malus baccata (L.) Borkh.) and B ('Gala'/Malus baccata (L.) Borkh.). The results showed that dwarfing interstocks could significantly reduce the height and diameters of apple trees while have few effects on the growth of annual branches. The interstocks were found to regulate the expression of genes related to hormone metabolism and tree body control (GH3.9, PIN1, CKI1, ARP1, GA2ox1 and GA20ox1), these effects may attribute the dwarf characters for apple trees with interstocks. Besides, the interstocks reduce photosynthesis-related genes (MADH-ME4 and GAPC), promote carbon (C) metabolism gene expression (AATP1, GDH and PFK3), promote the expression of nitrogen (N)-metabolism-related genes (NRT2.7, NADH and GDH) in rootstocks, and improve the expression of genes related to secondary metabolism in scions (DX5, FPS1, TPS21 and SRG1). We also concluded that the interstocks acquired early blooming traits due to promotion of the expression of flowering genes in the scion (MOF1, FTIP7, AGL12 and AGL24). This study is a valuable resource regarding the molecular mechanisms of dwarf interstocks' influence on various biological processes and transplantation systems in both scions and rootstocks. In apple cultivation, dwarf rootstocks are chosen for dense planting and intensive cultivation, which is beneficial to production management. Dwarf rootstocks are widely used in apple production in China. However, the dwarfing mechanisms of dwarf interstock are still unclear. Here, M9 and SH40 were selected as the dwarf interstocks for potted Fuji apples. The key transcription factor MdWRKY24 was screened via transcriptional sequencing. The open reading frame sequence of the MdWRKY24 gene was 657 bp in length, encoded 218 amino acids, and was located on the cell membrane. The MdWRKY24-overexpressing Arabidopsis line showed a dwarf phenotype and delayed flowering. The DELLA protein RGA-like (RGL) gene is a repressor of the gibberellin signaling pathway. Yeast two-hybrid analysis revealed that MdWRKY24 could interact with MdRGL1/2/3. The results indicated that MdWRKY24 might affect plant dwarfing through the synergistic effect of MdRGL1/2/3. Flowering-related problems in "Fuji" apple have severely restricted the development of China's apple industry. Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) control nucleoplasmic transport and play an important role in the regulation of plant growth and development. However, the effects of NPCs on apple flowering have not been reported. Here, we analysed the expression and function of MdNup54, a component of apple NPC. MdNup54 expression was the highest in flower buds and maintained during 30-70 days after flowering. MdNup54-overexpressing (OE) Arabidopsis lines displayed significantly earlier flowering than that of the wild type. We further confirmed that MdNup54 interacts with MdHSP70, MdMYB11, and MdKNAT4/6. Consistent with these observations, flowering time of MdHSP70-0E Arabidopsis lines was also significantly earlier. Therefore, our findings suggest a possible interaction of MdNup54 with MdHSP70 to mediate its nuclear and cytoplasmic transport and to regulate apple flowering. Forty-one apple samples from 7 geographical regions and 3 botanical origins in China were investigated. A total of 29 volatile compounds have been identified by flash GC E-nose. They are 17 esters, 5 alcohols, 3 aldehydes, 1 ketone, and 3 others. A principal component analysis was employed to study the relationship between varieties and volatiles. A partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), stepwise linear discriminant analysis (SLDA), and decision tree (DT) are used to discriminate apples from 4 geographical regions (34 apple samples) and 3 botanical origins (36 apple samples). The most influential markers identified by PLS-DA are 2-hexadecanone, methyl decanoate, tetradecanal, 1,8-cineole, hexyl 2-butenoate, (Z)-2-octenal, methyl 2-methylbutanoate, ethyl butyrate, dimethyl trisulfide, methyl formate, ethanol, S(-)2-methyl-1-butanol, ethyl acetate, pentyl acetate, butyl butanoate, butyl acetate, and ethyl octanoate. From the present work, SLDA reveals the best discrimination results in geographical regions and botanical origins, which are 88.2% and 88.9%, respectively. Chlorpyrifos (CPF) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) are insecticides and herbicides which has been widely used on farms. However, CPF and 2,4-D residues on corps can bring high risks to human health. Accurate detection of pesticide residues is important for controlling health risks caused by CPF and 2,4-D. Therefore, we developed a fast, sensitive, economical, and lossless surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based method for pesticide detection. It can rapidly and simultaneously determine the CPF and 2,4-D mixed pesticide residues on an apple surface at a minimum of 0.001 mg L−1 concentration, which is far below the pesticide residue standard in China and the EU. The limits of detection reach down to 1.28 × 10−9 mol L−1 for CPF and 2.47 × 10−10 mol L−1 for 2,4-D. The limits of quantification are 4.27 × 10−9 mol L−1 and 8.23 × 10−10 mol L−1 for CPF and 2,4-D. This method has a great potential for the accurate detection of pesticide residues, and may be applied to other fields of agricultural products and food industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of water and nitrogen in the soil profile are essential influencing factors that determine the development of crop root systems. The purpose of this study was to clarify the inter-row and inter-tree variability in soil moisture in the apple root zone, and to determine the effective root diameter ranges of apple trees that influence water and nitrogen absorption. The method used was a 2-year border irrigation experiment carried out in a traditional apple orchard in Zuncun, Shanxi Province, China. Dynamic variations in the soil moisture between trees within the row (perpendicular to the direction of border irrigation) and between rows (along the direction of border irrigation) were continuously measured from 2015 to 2016, and a specific soil profile was excavated to analyze the distribution characteristics of soil water, nitrogen, and roots with different diameters. The results showed obvious variations in soil moisture in the surface soil of 0–30 cm, and the soil moisture content between rows was 5% higher than that between trees within the row. The root length density in the soil between trees within the row was 33.5% higher than that in the soil between rows. Bivariate correlation analysis showed that the correlation between the root system and nitrogen and water was ranked from highest to lowest: total nitrogen (0.741) > nitrate nitrogen (−0.36) > soil moisture (−0.273). The correlation coefficient between trees within the row was higher than that between rows. Lower soil moisture between trees within the row resulted in increased root biomass and more active uptake activity between trees within the row. There were different significant correlations between the specific root diameter and the contents of soil water and nitrogen, showing that the 1.5 mm diameter roots correlated with the water content, whereas the 2.0 mm diameter roots correlated with the nitrogen content. The purpose of this study was to know the controlling effects of water and nitrogen coupling on the yield, quality, and water-nitrogen utilization effectiveness of mountain apples under surge-root irrigation in the Loess Plateau. In order to optimize the water and nitrogen irrigation systems of superior quality and high yield, 7 years was selected for the mountain apple test material. The trial was designed with four tiers of irrigation, i.e., full irrigation (FI: 85–100% θ f , where θ f is the field capacity), light deficit irrigation (DIL: 70–85% θ f ), moderate deficit irrigation (DIM: 55–70% θ f ), and severe deficit irrigation (DIS: 40–55% θ f ) and three tiers of nitrogen, i.e., high nitrogen (NH: 600 kg ha–1), medium nitrogen (NM: 400 kg ha–1), and low nitrogen (NL: 200 kg ha–1). The subjective weight attained by the analytic hierarchy methods and the objective weight achieved by the enhanced coefficient of variation method were examined to find the comprehensive weight based on the notion of game hypothesis. Then, the weighted technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) process was utilized to comprehensively assess the yield, quality, and water-nitrogen use efficiency of the apples, and a binary quadratic regression model was created between the comprehensive evaluation index and water-nitrogen inputs. The results showed that the effects of irrigation and nitrogen levels on the fruit yield, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), total water use efficiency (TWUE), nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP), and quality of mountain apples were significant (P < 0.05). The apple yield and TWUE first improved and then diminished with an escalating quantity of water-nitrogen inputs, the IWUE diminished with a boost in the irrigation quantity, the NPFP dwindled when the nitrogen amount was increased. The best water and nitrogen inputs for apple yield, quality, or water-nitrogen use efficiency were dissimilar. The best comprehensive evaluation index was DILNM treatment, and the worst comprehensive evaluation index was DISNL treatment, based on the TOPSIS system. The interval of irrigation and nitrogen attained from the mathematic model ranged in 95–115 mm and 470–575 kg ha–1, respectively. The outcome of this study may perhaps offer a theoretical basis for the scientific research of surge-root irrigation and the managing of mountain apple tree irrigation and fertilization in the Loess Plateau, China. Non-destructive and rapid methods for estimating apple firmness are helpful to determine harvesting dates. However, few studies have used an approach of spectral indices for monitoring apple firmness from ground-based handheld hyperspectral data. Therefore, this study analyzed the performance of spectral indices in determining apple firmness based on the spectra of unpeeled apples. The reflectance spectra of apple samples were acquired at wavelength 350–2500 nm. Ten apple varieties were collected from orchards located in seven provinces of China. A two-band combination method (normalized, ratio, and difference type) was used to identify the effective spectral indices. Results showed that the newly developed two-band normalized difference spectral indices (R840 − R841)/(R840 + R841) (Rλ is the reflectance value at wavelength λ) was recommended as the optimal index for monitoring apple firmness, generated the coefficients of determination, root mean square error and residual prediction deviation values between the measured and predicted values of 0.6721, 0.886 kg/cm2, and 1.7, respectively.
