Integrating political ecology and archaeology has resulted in innovative approaches for reconstructing past human-environment interactions and understanding the legacies that shape environmental degradation and resource struggles today. This paper contributes to this emerging interdisciplinarity by proposing a political ecological approach to investigate how archaeological remains are assigned value as resources, drawing on interpretive theories in both archaeology and political ecology. This article applies this approach to examine the archaeological imagination driving expeditions in eastern Honduras that aimed to find the remains of a site of monumental importance associated with the legend of the White City. Through a political ecological lens, it becomes clear that the interpretation of the region's archaeological heritage within the context of a legend is the result of displacement and resource control dynamics. Although archaeologists reject the legend as a credible source, actors continue to exploit its symbolism for prestige and profit. This approach highlights the disjuncture between profit-driven narratives of archaeological heritage and the socio-natures that underpin our imagination of such sites. The paper suggests that engaging with the socio-nature of archaeological sites may lead to more inclusive and nuanced interpretations of the past, showing how political ecology can contribute to public archaeology. This paper explores the placement and function of the discipline of geography in the expansion of the Japanese empire, doing so through the prism of the work and field research of Tada Fumio, a leading geographer in Japan both before and after 1945. This examination of this aspect of Tada Fumio's career and its interweaving with the construction and consolidation of Japan's empire will broaden recent studies of imperial Japan's simultaneous encounter with geopolitics and fascism while engaging with Japan's developing ideas about geography as a political and cultural discipline. This paper demonstrates the importance of the entwined histories of Japanese and German geographers in the Japanese empire, as well as documenting Tada Fumio's activities in Manchuria (northeast China) and on the Korean peninsula. The Gallagher Flint Station was discovered along the northern front of the Brooks Range during an archaeological survey of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System right-of-way. Excavation there in 1970– 1971 uncovered a core and blade assemblage said to date to the Late Pleistocene. At that time, few sites in Alaska approached or exceeded 10,000 radiocarbon years in age, and thus the Gallagher Flint Station aroused considerable interest. Subsequent excavation in 1974 revealed a much broader cultural milieu and temporal span. Little has been written about that aspect of the site, however, and much of what has been written is not readily accessible. This paper is not an analysis of the unreported data but an introduction to the site and an overview of the material cultural found there, which includes the full gamut of Paleoeskimo cultures, a substantial Northern Archaic tradition component, and a previously unrecognized Northern Paleoindian tradition presence. The British Expedition to Tibet of 1903-1904 represented the last major military operation of the Great Game, the broad cultural confrontation between the British and the Russians that contested the geopolitical space of central and high Asia for almost the entire nineteenth century, up until the St. Petersburg entente of 1907. The role assumed by the then Tongsa Penlop, Ugyen Wangchuck, as a mediator between the British and Tibetans during the Expedition, was critical. Among the Bhutanese nobles, Ugyen Wangchuck had emerged victorious from the Battle of Changlimithang in 1885 and in 1907 he was crowned as the first king of Bhutan. In the period between the military victory and his accession to the throne, the power of Ugyen Wangchuck had to be consolidated definitively in a country that was simultaneously involved in the geopolitical space of the Raj, to which it was linked by the Treaty of Sinchula of 1865, and in the cultural sphere of Tibet, its most profound and ancient spiritual heritage. This paper reconstructs through British archival documents an attempt carried out by the Bhutanese with the British -- in anticipation of Anglo-Tibetan negotiations -- to try to resolve the last internal tensions of Bhutan. Although strongly downsized, some ancient rivalries, like underground rivers, continued to run across the balances of power and the international role of the small Himalayan country at the beginning of the twentieth century. Umm Tawabin (‘Mother of Bread Ovens’ in Arabic) is a large fortress overlooking the Wadi ‘Arabah and southern Dead Sea in Jordan. From the time of its discovery by a Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) expedition in the late 19th century, Umm Tawabin had not been excavated, nor published extensively in spite of its strategically elevated location with panoramic views on all sides, its monumental fortification and numerous and varied archaeological remains until the Ghor as-Safi Project survey (Ariotti 2017) and excavations (Ariotti 2022; 2021; Politis and Ariotti 2020). The goal of this investigation was to determine the extent, function (or multiple functions) and dating of the site, along with the subsistence practices and diet of its inhabitants based on its topographical, architectural and excavated material culture, botanical and faunal remains (Ariotti 2021, Edwell 2023, Hansen and Heinrich, in press). This paper presents an overview of the chronological development and strategic importance of Umm Tawabin from the Hellenistic to Roman periods in view of its stratigraphic evidence, radiocarbon dates and pottery. Knowledge production on Victorian and Edwardian expeditions depended on the embodied labour of subaltern individuals. Explorers frequently mention such work in their accounts, but they also manage their dependence on others through a variety of rhetorical techniques. I show that focusing on body work can foreground the contributions of subaltern individuals to the history of British geographical exploration. I do so through a critical reading of the published and private accounts of explorers as well as their visual sources. In focusing on these labour practices, this paper offers a new perspective on the historical geographies of exploration, attentive to subaltern contributions. More broadly, the paper encourages geographers to reflect on the embodied and caring labour on which geographical research depends and the devaluation of certain bodies and their labour. These issues are examined through new readings of three otherwise familiar case studies: Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke's Nile expeditions (1856–59 and 1860–63); Isabella Bird Bishop's travels in the Middle East, Japan, China, and Lesser Tibet (1878–1896); and Captain Scott's two Antarctic expeditions (1901–04 and 1911–13). • Diversifies the history of geographical exploration. • Develops scholarship on subaltern contributions to British-led geographical exploration. • Highlights the importance of embodied work such as caring, carrying, and cleaning the Victorian and Edwardian expeditions. • Develops methodological strategies for engaging with colonial archives. The paper presents the restoration activities carried out at Tell Mardikh-Ebla (Syria) by the Italian Archaeological Expedition to Syria of the Sapienza University of Rome. In particular, the study focuses on the operations to preserve the mudbrick structures that have specifically suffered from erosion by rain wind which has caused the collapse of sections of walls. The programme of restoration at Ebla sought to clarify and outline a plan of excavated structures with swift, non-invasive, and reversible interventions and reconstructions. The protection of mudbrick buildings is indeed a challenge for archaeologists working in the Near East: mudbricks are extremely fragile both during the excavation and even more so after they have been excavated. Starting from the results at Ebla, the issue of preserving mudbrick structures is far from being completely solved; the lack of any archaeological research at Ebla, because of the political crisis in Syria, heavily affected the site and the restored buildings that have been seriously damaged by illicit digging and the occupation of the archaeological areas. New techniques and solutions are needed to improve the quality of maintenance and the protection of such a fragile heritage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the historic-era (ca. 1895–1915) artifacts from the Swan Point Archaeological Site in the Middle Tanana Valley, Alaska, and provides an analysis of the artifacts and their manufactured provenance. The Tanana Valley represents one of the last regions in Alaska to be directly impacted by outsiders. Our analyses show the Swan Point historic occupation represents the behavior and activities of local Indigenous Dene and not those of Euro-American prospectors or hunters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of this paper is on collectors of naturalia who also gathered “ethnographic” objects alongside their main interest that lay in botany, zoology, mineralogy etc., providing collections to zoological gardens and museums of natural history. Carl Hagenbeck, Johann Umlauff and Otto Staudinger are only the most prominent names from the turn of century. They were the principals for many collecting projects. The permeability of scientific spaces in the nineteenth century is more visible in collections gathered by commercial expeditions with an orientation towards natural sciences than in ethnological and archaeological expeditions. Another aspect of this scholarly permeability was the popularization of science in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ernst Ule was a typical representative of this movement. The permeability between “scientific” and “commercial” interests and the necessary networks, programmatic in the “science of humanity” in the late nineteenth century, is visible in the close interrelation between disciplines. The fact that the focus of these scholars was not the study of people in the first place but the collection of botanical or zoological specimens, where the knowledge of indigenous experts was indispensable, shaped not only the collection but also the relationship between the collectors and the communities involved. This paper presents the first study of the Roman period amphorae which were discovered by the Gonio-Apsaros Polish-Georgian Expedition at the Roman fort of Apsaros (modern Gonio, Georgia) between 2014 and 2019. Six excavation seasons provided over a thousand diagnostic fragments of both locally produced and imported transport containers, with a considerable number of these dating to between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Most of the imports come from the southern Black Sea and the Aegean regions, whereas northern Black Sea containers appear only occasionally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of different data from satellite platforms for archaeological prospecting and remote sensing has been applied since the end of the 20th century. Although the current use of drones with different visible and multispectral sensors for small areas has partially replaced in some cases the use of this type of satellite information due to its higher spatial resolution. The historical importance of satellite imagery is essential to find out about and compare the transformations of the archaeological landscape of the last 60 years since the CORONA satellite program started in 1960. In this paper we propose the evaluation of a proposal for the automation of processes of two photographic reconnaissance correlative satellite programs CORONA (1960-1972), HEXAGON (1971-1986) declassified since 1995 and 2011 respectively, and the commercial satellite WorldView-3 (WV3) (2014) for use in the detection of buried archaeological structures at the archaeological site of Zar Tepe in the southeast of Uzbekistan. This is a site located in the Surkhan Darya region very little known between the first century BC and the fourth century AD. This methodology is part of the IPAEB project (International Pluridisciplinary Archaeological Expedition to Bactria) led by the University of Barcelona, the University of Salamanca and recently in 2019 the University of Zaragoza. IPAEB was started in 2006 in the South of Uzbekistan and is currently trying to explore the urban planning of the Zar Tepe archaeological site and the elements that make up its natural physical environment: evidence of communication routes, smallholdings, irrigation channels, fences and sources of raw materials. Despite its apparent size and length of its existence, the Dzhety-asar culture of Kazakhstan remains one of the great unknowns of Central Asian archaeology, comprising, as it did, several dozen now-ruined settlements with an almost thousand-year long occupational history. First settled around the 1st century BC and gradually abandoned in the second half of the 1st millennium AD, the Dzhety-asar towns and manors were located to the east of the Aral Sea within the Syr Darya delta, and may have functioned as a core element in Central Asia's medieval trade networks. Despite past research efforts by the Khorezmian Archaeological Ethnographic Expedition (KhAEE), the cultural and political history of the Dzhety-asar people remains largely unclear, with as yet no consensus on the political structure or their ethnic, linguistic and religious make-up. The present paper does not presume to answer these questions at this stage, as it is the result of two fieldwork seasons documenting and surveying Dzhety-asar settlements. It is, instead, intended to lay out the preliminary findings, presenting a revised typology of sites, and suggest initial hypotheses regarding the structure and possible evolution of the culture. The upper reach of the Yukon River is a terraced riparian corridor that traverses eastern Alaska, United States, and the west-central Yukon Territory, Canada. We consolidate 62 radiocarbon dates among numerous archaeological sites and develop a model of cultural occupation of this region spanning the Chindadn through Dene Traditions (ca. 13,770–200 cal BP). We present Bayesian sum probability density plots derived from our radiocarbon dataset, report on dated components with sourced obsidian, provide new dates on Denali microlithic components, and elaborate on the White River volcanic eruptions. An assemblage of southern sourced obsidian and the introduction of copper metallurgy at the time of the eastern lobe of the White River ash suggests a possible northern displacement of people or an expanded social network following the eruption. The consolidated radiocarbon record across the broad riparian landscape of the Upper Yukon River Canyon expands the spatial extent of dated cultural components in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. This paper tracks a world of instruments and global designs in a new era of archaeology, spearheaded by Froelich Rainey in his role as Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Post-WWII scientific development, industrial-military-academic partnerships, and American adventurism were all brought together through Rainey's archaeological expeditions. During the 1960s, Penn's field projects were strategically positioned across the globe, with many trialing a novel technique or different device: Rainey launched a prototype submarine off the Turkish coast, magnetometers and sonic devices across Italy, resistivity in Mexico, and infrared aerial cameras over the Mediterranean. Archaeological innovation was tied to, and developed directly out of, US nuclear ambition and the leveraging of 'peaceful' atomic research, and American Cold War collaborations that united science, exploration, and culture for mutual benefit. Here we underscore the connectivities between diverse actors and activities, nuclear science, tech companies, private foundations, and philanthropists, coupled with the military and intelligence community. For the first time in the literature, this study provides an analysis of the activities of two major architectural–archeological missions that investigated the architectural heritage of the Armenian Highlands: the Russian Ani Archaeological Expedition (1892–1893 and 1904–1917) and the Italian academic programs of the Universities of Rome and Venice and that of Milan Polytechnic (from 1966 to the 1980s). In this article, the results of the conducted research are compared, and their contribution to the development of the history of medieval architecture is evaluated. The differences in the results are related to the chronological distance between the missions, as well as the main focus of each work: the activities of the Russians are primarily archeological, while those of the Italian groups are architectural. The head of the Ani Institute, Nikolay Marr, set himself the task of exhibiting the original artifacts in the museum he had created in the medieval capital of Armenia, Ani, while the Italian professors relied on photography for both permanent and touring exhibitions. The second mission was in unspoken contact with the first, forming a kind of time-stretched dialog. Although, by the 1970s, almost none of the participants in Marr's expedition remained alive, his scientific works were periodically being published, with some still waiting their turn in the scientific archives. This study analyzes an unconventional diplomacy initiative by the nascent Republic of Turkey. Upon the proposal of the President Mustafa Kemal [Atatürk], the ship Karadeniz (Black Sea) was transformed into a public diplomacy cruiser in 1926, sailing to western ports to promote Turkey's newly established republican regime. After a long decade of wars and diplomatic hardships, the Revolutionary cadre in Turkey turned to unconventional means to generate a new identity for the country. This study examines the motives behind this unconventional diplomacy attempt over the Karadeniz Floating Fair case, which was a foresighted public diplomacy project. Karadeniz was furnished with a variety of exhibition items ranging from the popular products of the country to the newly developing artistic forms and displayed them in the port cities of Europe and the USSR. It is argued that this unconventional diplomacy formulation ensued from certain restraints of conventional diplomacy related to the national image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago is known for its Alutiiq/Sugpiaq petroglyphs. Rock carvings showing people, faces, animals, objects, and geometric designs are well documented around Cape Alitak and on the shores of Afognak Bay. Recent archaeological research illustrates that a second, more abstract style of petroglyph is also present across the region. Sites with pecked cupules and cut lines occur in at least 10 locations, carved into immovable boulders and bedrock outcrops beside salmon streams and bay mouths. An association between cupule sites and settlements suggests that this rock art dates to the Koniag tradition. The circular shape of the cupules, placement at the water’s edge, affiliation with anadromous streams, occurrence beside barrier fishing structures, and manufacture during repeated site visits suggest that these carvings helped harvesters maintain relationships with animals to ensure future supplies of fish and game. Cobble tools can provide useful information on the economy of sites and the function of activity areas. They can also reveal, through use-wear analysis, activities that would otherwise be invisible in the archaeological record. The use-wear analysis of cobble tools in the ca. 10,000 cal bp occupation (Component 2) of Little Panguingue Creek (Nenana River Valley, Alaska) offers new insights into the function of the site. Nine cobble tools (or fragments) have been found in this component. Most of these tools were used as hammerstones and clearly involved in lithic production at different stages of the knapping process. At least one cobble tool was used in the processing of pigments by pounding. Although so far only one Occupation Unit (U1) has been found, there are some indications that there may be a larger occupation than just a knapping workshop. The hidden activities revealed here through use-wear analysis add evidence that indicates that Little Panguingue Creek may not be just an ephemeral knapping station to exploit the local raw materials for microblade and tool production, but a larger occupation with various activities being carried out. In September 2021 a small group of archaeologists, members of the University of Florence excavations at Tell Afis, made return to Syria and took part into an expedition concerning not the site itself, out of reach due to the political crisis in the country since 2011, but materials from the site kept in the expedition house written at Saraqib. This article is an account of that return and of the following ones in 2022 written with the aim to keep attention on Syria, its important past and its critical present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The site of Banbhore is located in the western delta of the Indus river (Sindh, Pakistan), identified as the harbor town of Daybul mentioned in pre-Islamic and Early Islamic written sources. The archaeological activities conducted here since the beginning of the past century revealed a long and uninterrupted occupation and complex urban planning (1st century BCE-early 13th century CE). A systematic field survey was carried out for the first time around Banbhore within the Italian-Pakistani archaeological expedition. Investigation revealed the presence of a densely settled hinterland, with a clear strategy in land use and occupation. Surface artefacts suggest a very long period of frequentation, from at least the Sasanian period to the Modern era. Results find an interesting comparison with both the information available in written texts and the materials from the excavation of the fortified town. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advanced geophysical techniques developed in Hungary contributed immensely to the success of geological surveys carried out in the PRC after 1956. A group of Hungarian geophysicists played a pivotal role in discovering and exploring oil deposits in the Songliao Basin, which later became known as Daqing, the largest oil field in China. Based on declassified primary sources from Hungarian archives and firsthand testimony from people involved in the expedition, this article examines how Sino-Hungarian cooperation in Cold War activities evolved against the backdrop of the radicalization of Chinese politics and growing tensions between the Soviet Union and China. Taking the Hungarian geophysicists' expedition as an example, the article explores the historical setting of early exchanges and the daily practice of scientific and technological interactions between the PRC and one of the closest East European allies of the Soviet Union. An important component of assessing lithic technological organization in the past is understanding the location, quality, and nodule size of knappable raw materials on the landscape. Geologic reports can provide some information, but they often lack detail on lithic materials of interest to archaeologists. What is needed is an on-the-ground assessment specifically focused on knappable lithics in a study area. This report presents the results of a lithic raw material survey in the upper Susitna River basin in the central Alaska Range. This study assessed lithic raw material sources available in the upper Susitna basin by consulting geologic maps and systematically documenting and sampling knappable lithic raw materials in drainages throughout the study area. The research goal is to provide an initial description of knappable lithic raw materials in the upper Susitna basin that can be compared with archaeological assemblages from the region. This study provides a baseline for evaluating the lithic landscape of the upper Susitna River basin and evaluating hunter-gatherer lithic technological organization and land-use patterns. Lithic landscape studies focused on physical properties of locally available lithic materials in Interior Alaska are an invaluable first step in working toward a comprehensive understanding of prehistoric hunter-gatherer land-use patterns. One of the most discussed issues in European archaeology is the significance and context of monumentality and the construction of long barrows and megaliths in the Neolithic. The construction of monuments in Neolithic Europe can, due to their often significant size and complexity, be interpreted as signs of collective building efforts, but the social and political background may vary from more egalitarian to highly stratified societies. During the last 20 years of surveys and archaeological excavations in southwest Scania, Sweden, new archaeological results have been produced, revealing many hitherto unknown settlements, central places for feasting, long barrows, megaliths, free-standing façades and other types of monumental constructions. This has disclosed a much more complex picture of the Early Neolithic (4000–3300calBC) Funnel Beaker Culture societies in the region. Large-scale excavations have documented a hierarchy of monumental places in Early Neolithic southern Scandinavia, probably reflecting different uses of monuments, mirroring a social hierarchy in polities. Recently, another central place has been excavated at Flackarp, south of Lund, Sweden, containing at least nine dolmens and free-standing façades, further supporting this hypothesis. The present report presents the archaeological, epigraphic, conservation, and landscape works carried out by the Middle Kingdom Theban Project - a project under the auspices of the University of Alcalá (UAH, Madrid) Expedition to Deir el-Bahari and Asasif - in three campaigns (Fifth Season 2020, Study Season 2021, Sixth Season 2021). After the abrupt interruption of the Fifth Season due to the outbreak of the SARS-COVID 19 pandemic, the team organized a (summer) Study Season (Summer 2021), mainly to complete the analysis and documentation of required materials, and the Sixth Season (Fall 2021), where the focus stood on: i) the excavation of the courtyards of Henenu (TT 313) and Ipi (TT 315); ii) the excavation of the inner sections of TT 313 and E1; iii) the epigraphic analysis of hundreds of relief blocks retrieved from TT 313; iv) the implementation of new conservation protocols for the findings as well as the analysis of the conservation conditions and problems in Dagi's tomb (TT 103); and v) the detailed analysis of textiles, ceramics, and human remains from TT 315. The archaeological excavations at Apodoulou, conducted by the Greek-Italian expedition in the years 1985-2005, brought to light six houses, of which House A was fully excavated. From 499 complete vessels plus 2.048 diagnostic fragments, mainly rim sherds, four categories of vessels were distinguished: tableware, storage/transport vessels, vessels for cooking and food preparation, and vessels for diverse uses. Following the presentation of the tableware (Venieri 2020), in the present article, shapes and types of storage ware, cooking ware and various other wares are analysed as part of a broad study concerning pottery production and consumption at the Middle Minoan settlement of Apodoulou.
