This study takes stock of business and economics research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and provides a dynamic panorama of the overall knowledge structure of this ever-growing body of work ever since its inception in 1966. Our bibliometric analysis based on the full archive of 1024 studies identifies the main trends of and the major intellectual contributors to the extant knowledge of AI in business and economics research. Specifically, our results show that (1) AI-focused business and economics research wintnessed growth over three stages, particularly with a sharp increase after 2017. (2) While this body of research has gained tremendous momentum across the globe, the United States is by far the center of knowledge generation. (3) Research collaborations are still limited in this area. (4) Research topics flourished, ranging from early decision support systems, neural networks, and scheduling methods to more recent machine learning, automation, and big data. With the advancement in big data and cloud computing technology, we have witnessed tremendous developments in applying intelligent techniques in network operation and management. However, learning- and data-based solutions for network operation and maintenance cannot effectively adapt to the dynamic security situation or satisfy administrators' expectations alone. Anomaly detection of time-series monitoring indicators has been a major challenge for network administrative personnel. Monitored indicators in network operations are characterized by multiple instances with high dimensions and fluctuating time-series features and rely on system resource deployment and business environment variations. Hence, there is a growing consensus that conducting anomaly detection with machine intelligence under the operation and maintenance personnel's guidance is more effective than solely using learning and modeling. This paper intends to model the anomaly detection task as a Markov Decision Process and adopts the Double Deep Q-Network algorithm to train an anomaly detection agent, in which the multidimensional temporal convolution network is applied as the principal structure of the Q network and the interactive guidance information from the operation and maintenance personnel is introduced into the procedure to facilitate model convergence. Experimental results on the SMD dataset indicate that the proposed modeling and detection method achieves higher precision and recall rates compared to other learning-based methods. Our method achieves model optimization by using human–computer interactions continuously, which guarantees a faster and more consistent model training procedure and convergence. Purpose: To present fully automated DL-based prostate cancer detection system for prostate MRI. Methods: MRI scans from two institutions, were used for algorithm training, validation, testing. MRI-visible lesions were contoured by an experienced radiologist. All lesions were biopsied using MRI-TRUS-guidance. Lesions masks, histopathological results were used as ground truth labels to train UNet, AH-Net architectures for prostate cancer lesion detection, segmentation. Algorithm was trained to detect any prostate cancer ≥ ISUP1. Detection sensitivity, positive predictive values, mean number of false positive lesions per patient were used as performance metrics. Results: 525 patients were included for training, validation, testing of the algorithm. Dataset was split into training (n = 368, 70%), validation (n = 79, 15%), test (n = 78, 15%) cohorts. Dice coefficients in training, validation sets were 0.403, 0.307, respectively, for AHNet model compared to 0.372, 0.287, respectively, for UNet model. In validation set, detection sensitivity was 70.9%, PPV was 35.5%, mean number of false positive lesions/patient was 1.41 (range 0–6) for UNet model compared to 74.4% detection sensitivity, 47.8% PPV, mean number of false positive lesions/patient was 0.87 (range 0–5) for AHNet model. In test set, detection sensitivity for UNet was 72.8% compared to 63.0% for AHNet, mean number of false positive lesions/patient was 1.90 (range 0–7), 1.40 (range 0–6) in UNet, AHNet models, respectively. Conclusion: We developed a DL-based AI approach which predicts prostate cancer lesions at biparametric MRI with reasonable performance metrics. While false positive lesion calls remain as a challenge of AI-assisted detection algorithms, this system can be utilized as an adjunct tool by radiologists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Early prediction of acute kidney injury (AKI) after liver transplantation (LT) facilitates timely recognition and intervention. We aimed to build a risk predictor of post-LT AKI via supervised machine learning and visualize the mechanism driving within to assist clinical decision-making.Methods: Data of 894 cases that underwent liver transplantation from January 2015 to September 2019 were collected, covering demographics, donor characteristics, etiology, peri-operative laboratory results, co-morbidities and medications. The primary outcome was new-onset AKI after LT according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guidelines. Predicting performance of five classifiers including logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest, gradient boosting machine (GBM) and adaptive boosting were respectively evaluated by the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, F1-score, sensitivity and specificity. Model with the best performance was validated in an independent dataset involving 195 adult LT cases from October 2019 to March 2021. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method was applied to evaluate feature importance and explain the predictions made by ML algorithms.Results: 430 AKI cases (55.1%) were diagnosed out of 780 included cases. The GBM model achieved the highest AUC (0.76, CI 0.70 to 0.82), F1-score (0.73, CI 0.66 to 0.79) and sensitivity (0.74, CI 0.66 to 0.8) in the internal validation set, and a comparable AUC (0.75, CI 0.67 to 0.81) in the external validation set. High preoperative indirect bilirubin, low intraoperative urine output, long anesthesia time, low preoperative platelets, and graft steatosis graded NASH CRN 1 and above were revealed by SHAP method the top 5 important variables contributing to the diagnosis of post-LT AKI made by GBM model.Conclusions: Our GBM-based predictor of post-LT AKI provides a highly interoperable tool across institutions to assist decision-making after LT. Background and Aim Methods Results Conclusions Reliable bowel preparation assessment is important in colonoscopy. However, current scoring systems are limited by laborious and time‐consuming tasks and interobserver variability. We aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to assess bowel cleanliness and evaluate its clinical applicability.A still image‐driven AI model to assess the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) was developed and validated using 2361 colonoscopy images. For evaluating real‐world applicability, the model was validated using 113 10‐s colonoscopy video clips and 30 full colonoscopy videos to identify “adequate (BBPS 2–3)” or “inadequate (BBPS 0–1)” preparation. The model was tested with an external dataset of 29 colonoscopy videos. The clinical applicability of the model was evaluated using 225 consecutive colonoscopies. Inter‐rater variability was analyzed between the AI model and endoscopists.The AI model achieved an accuracy of 94.0% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.939 with the still images. Model testing with an external dataset showed an accuracy of 95.3%, an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.976, and a sensitivity of 100% for the detection of inadequate preparations. The clinical applicability study showed an overall agreement rate of 85.3% between endoscopists and the AI model, with Fleiss' kappa of 0.686. The agreement rate was lower for the right colon compared with the transverse and left colon, with Fleiss' kappa of 0.563, 0.575, and 0.789, respectively.The AI model demonstrated accurate bowel preparation assessment and substantial agreement with endoscopists. Objective: Automated methods for prostate segmentation on MRI are typically developed under ideal scanning and anatomical conditions. This study evaluates three different prostate segmentation AI algorithms in a challenging population of patients with prior treatments, variable anatomic characteristics, complex clinical history, or atypical MRI acquisition parameters. Materials and methods: A single institution retrospective database was queried for the following conditions at prostate MRI: prior prostate-specific oncologic treatment, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), abdominal perineal resection (APR), hip prosthesis (HP), diversity of prostate volumes (large ≥ 150 cc, small ≤ 25 cc), whole gland tumor burden, magnet strength, noted poor quality, and various scanners (outside/vendors). Final inclusion criteria required availability of axial T2-weighted (T2W) sequence and corresponding prostate organ segmentation from an expert radiologist. Three previously developed algorithms were evaluated: (1) deep learning (DL)-based model, (2) commercially available shape-based model, and (3) federated DL-based model. Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) was calculated compared to expert. DSC by model and scan factors were evaluated with Wilcox signed-rank test and linear mixed effects (LMER) model. Results: 683 scans (651 patients) met inclusion criteria (mean prostate volume 60.1 cc [9.05–329 cc]). Overall DSC scores for models 1, 2, and 3 were 0.916 (0.707–0.971), 0.873 (0–0.997), and 0.894 (0.025–0.961), respectively, with DL-based models demonstrating significantly higher performance (p < 0.01). In sub-group analysis by factors, Model 1 outperformed Model 2 (all p < 0.05) and Model 3 (all p < 0.001). Performance of all models was negatively impacted by prostate volume and poor signal quality (p < 0.01). Shape-based factors influenced DL models (p < 0.001) while signal factors influenced all (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Factors affecting anatomical and signal conditions of the prostate gland can adversely impact both DL and non-deep learning-based segmentation models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used in clinical practice for more than 40 years and its safety and preferential accumulation in tumors has been reported for various tumor types, including colon cancer. However, reports on clinical assessments of ICG-based molecular endoscopy imaging for precancerous lesions are scarce. We determined visualization ability of ICG fluorescence endoscopy in colitis-associated colon cancer using 30 lesions from an azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) mouse model and 16 colon cancer patient tissue-samples. With a total of 60 images (optical, fluorescence) obtained during endoscopy observation of mouse colon cancer, we used deep learning network to predict four classes (Normal, Dysplasia, Adenoma, and Carcinoma) of colorectal cancer development. ICG could detect 100% of carcinoma, 90% of adenoma, and 57% of dysplasia, with little background signal at 30 min after injection via real-time fluorescence endoscopy. Correlation analysis with immunohistochemistry revealed a positive correlation of ICG with inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS; r > 0.5). Increased expression of iNOS resulted in increased levels of cellular nitric oxide in cancer cells compared to that in normal cells, which was related to the inhibition of drug efflux via the ABCB1 transporter down-regulation resulting in delayed retention of intracellular ICG. With artificial intelligence training, the accuracy of image classification into four classes using data sets, such as fluorescence, optical, and fluorescence/optical images was assessed. Fluorescence images obtained the highest accuracy (AUC of 0.8125) than optical and fluorescence/optical images (AUC of 0.75 and 0.6667, respectively). These findings highlight the clinical feasibility of ICG as a detector of precancerous lesions in real-time fluorescence endoscopy with artificial intelligence training and suggest that the mechanism of ICG retention in cancer cells is related to intracellular nitric oxide concentration. Objectives: To evaluate commercial deep learning–based software for fully automated coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring on non-electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated low-dose CT (LDCT) with different slice thicknesses compared with manual ECG-gated calcium-scoring CT (CSCT). Methods: This retrospective study included 567 patients who underwent both LDCT and CSCT. All LDCT images were reconstructed with a 2.5-mm slice thickness (LDCT2.5-mm), and 453 LDCT scans were reconstructed with a 1.0-mm slice thickness (LDCT1.0-mm). Automated CAC scoring was performed on CSCT (CSCTauto), LDCT1.0-mm, and LDCT2.5-mm images. The reliability of CSCTauto, LDCT1.0-mm, and LDCT2.5-mm was compared with manual CSCT scoring (CSCTmanual) using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman analysis. Agreement, in CAC severity category, was analyzed using weighted kappa statistics. Diagnostic performance at various Agatston score cutoffs was also calculated. Results: CSCTauto, LDCT1.0-mm, and LDCT2.5-mm demonstrated excellent agreement with CSCTmanual (ICC [95% confidence interval, CI]: 1.000 [1.000, 1.000], 0.937 [0.917, 0.952], and 0.955 [0.946, 0.963], respectively). The mean difference with 95% limits of agreement was lower with LDCT1.0-mm than with LDCT2.5-mm (19.94 [95% CI, −244.0, 283.9] vs. 45.26 [−248.2, 338.7]). Regarding CAC severity, LDCT1.0-mm achieved almost perfect agreement, and LDCT2.5-mm achieved substantial agreement (kappa [95% CI]: 0.809 [0.776, 0.838], 0.776 [0.740, 0.809], respectively). Diagnostic performance for detecting Agatston score ≥ 400 was also higher with LDCT1.0-mm than with LDCT2.5-mm (F1 score, 0.929 vs. 0.855). Conclusions: Fully automated CAC-scoring software with both CSCT and LDCT yielded excellent reliability and agreement with CSCTmanual. LDCT1.0-mm yielded more accurate Agatston scoring than LDCT2.5-mm using fully automated commercial software. Objectives: To validate an artificial intelligence (AI)–based fully automatic coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring system on non-electrocardiogram (ECG)–gated low-dose chest computed tomography (LDCT) using multi-institutional datasets with manual CAC scoring as the reference standard. Methods: This retrospective study included 452 subjects from three academic institutions, who underwent both ECG-gated calcium scoring computed tomography (CSCT) and LDCT scans. For all CSCT and LDCT scans, automatic CAC scoring (CAC_auto) was performed using AI-based software, and manual CAC scoring (CAC_man) was set as the reference standard. The reliability and agreement of CAC_auto was evaluated and compared with that of CAC_man using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman plots. The reliability between CAC_auto and CAC_man for CAC severity categories was analyzed using weighted kappa (κ) statistics. Results: CAC_auto on CSCT and LDCT yielded a high ICC (0.998, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.998–0.999 and 0.989, 95% CI 0.987–0.991, respectively) and a mean difference with 95% limits of agreement of 1.3 ± 37.1 and 0.8 ± 75.7, respectively. CAC_auto achieved excellent reliability for CAC severity (κ = 0.918–0.972) on CSCT and good to excellent but heterogenous reliability among datasets (κ = 0.748–0.924) on LDCT. Conclusions: The application of an AI-based automatic CAC scoring software to LDCT shows good to excellent reliability in CAC score and CAC severity categorization in multi-institutional datasets; however, the reliability varies among institutions. Objectives: Cardiovascular border (CB) analysis is the primary method for detecting and quantifying the severity of cardiovascular disease using posterior-anterior chest radiographs (CXRs). This study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning–based automatic CXR CB analysis algorithm (CB_auto) for diagnosing and quantitatively evaluating valvular heart disease (VHD). Methods: We developed CB_auto using 816 normal and 798 VHD CXRs. For validation, 640 normal and 542 VHD CXRs from three different hospitals and 132 CXRs from a public dataset were assigned. The reliability of the CB parameters determined by CB_auto was evaluated. To evaluate the differences between parameters determined by CB_auto and manual CB drawing (CB_hand), the absolute percentage measurement error (APE) was calculated. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between CB_hand and echocardiographic measurements. Results: CB parameters determined by CB_auto yielded excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.98). The 95% limits of agreement for the cardiothoracic ratio were 0.00 ± 0.04% without systemic bias. The differences between parameters determined by CB_auto and CB_hand as defined by the APE were < 10% for all parameters except for carinal angle and left atrial appendage. In the public dataset, all CB parameters were successfully drawn in 124 of 132 CXRs (93.9%). All CB parameters were significantly greater in VHD than in normal controls (all p < 0.05). All CB parameters showed significant correlations (p < 0.05) with echocardiographic measurements. Conclusions: The CB_auto system empowered by deep learning algorithm provided highly reliable CB measurements that could be useful not only in daily clinical practice but also for research purposes. To explore the adoption effect of improved neural network blade pattern in corona virus disease (COVID)-19, comparative analysis is implemented. First, the following hypotheses are proposed. I: in addition to the confirmed cases and deaths, people suspected of being infected are also involved in the spread of the epidemic. II: patients who have been cured may also develop secondary infections, so it is considered that there is still a link between cured cases and the spread of the epidemic. III: only the relevant data of the previous day is used to predict the epidemic prevention and control of the next day. Then, the epidemic data from February 1st to February 15th in X province were selected as the control. The combined neural network model is used for prevention and control prediction, and the prediction results of the traditional neural network model are compared. The results show that the predictions of the daily new cases by the five neural network models have little difference with the actual value, and the trend is basically consistent. However, there are still differences in some time nodes. The errors of neural network 1 on the 6th and network 3 on the 13th are large. The accuracy of the combined neural network prediction model is high, and there is little difference between the result and the actual value at each time node. The prediction of the cumulative number of diagnoses per day of the five neural network models is also analyzed, and the results are relatively ideal. In addition, the accuracy of the combined neural network prediction model is high, and the difference between the result and the actual value at each time node is relatively small. It is found that the standard deviations of neural networks 2 and 3 are relatively high through the comparison of the deviations. The deviation means of the five models were all relatively low, and the mean deviation and standard deviation of the combined neural network model are the lowest. It is found that the accuracy of prediction on the epidemic spread in this province is good by comparing the performance of each neural network model. Regarding various indicators, the prediction accuracy of the combined neural network model is higher than that of the other four models, and its performance is also the best. Finally, the MSE of the improved neural network model is lower compared with the traditional neural network model. Moreover, with the change of learning times, the change trend of MSE is constant (P < 0.05 for all). In short, the improved neural network blade model has better performance compared with that of the traditional neural network blade model. The prediction results of the epidemic situation are accurate, and the application effect is remarkable, so the proposed model is worthy of further promotion and application in the medical field. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods for the automatic detection and quantification of COVID-19 lesions in chest computed tomography (CT) might play an important role in the monitoring and management of the disease. We organized an international challenge and competition for the development and comparison of AI algorithms for this task, which we supported with public data and state-of-the-art benchmark methods. Board Certified Radiologists annotated 295 public images from two sources (A and B) for algorithms training (n = 199 , source A), validation (n = 50 , source A) and testing (n = 23 , source A; n = 23 , source B). There were 1,096 registered teams of which 225 and 98 completed the validation and testing phases, respectively. The challenge showed that AI models could be rapidly designed by diverse teams with the potential to measure disease or facilitate timely and patient-specific interventions.
