Until early 2006, in Brazil, the focus used to be on oil and gas exploration/exploitation of post-salt carbonates. This changed when the industry announced the existence of large fields in pre-salt layers across the South Atlantic Ocean from nearshore zones up to almost 350 [km] from the shore. With the discovery of pre-salt hydrocarbons reservoirs, new challenges appeared. One of the main challenges is the necessity to optimize the drilling processes due to their high operational costs. Drilling costs are considerably high, which leads the oil and gas industry to search for innovative and entrepreneurial methods. The coupling of the mechanical specific energy (MSE) and the rate of penetration (ROP) is a method that allows for the identification of ideal conditions to efficiently enhance the drilling process. In addition, the performance of the drilling process can be estimated through pre-operational tests, which consist in continuously testing the applied drilling mechanic parameters, such as the weight-on-bit (WOB) and drill string rotary speed (RPM), looking for optimum sets that would ultimately provide the most desirable ROP. Thus, the goal of this research was to analyze field data from pre-salt layer operations, using a multi-objective optimization based on the play-back methodology for pre-operational drilling tests, through the ideal combination of the highest ROP and the lowest MSE. The results showed that the new concept of pre-operational tests based on the MSE proved to be effective in the drilling process optimization. The combination of the highest ROP and the lowest MSE allows for a high-performance drilling process. For WOB intervals of 5 and 7 [klb], a good fit of the parameters was obtained. Through the parameters obtained from pre-operational tests, the eventual cost-saving and time-saving values could be estimated, respectively, ranging from USD 1,056,180 to 1,151,898 and 19.50 to 21.27 [h], respectively. The karstification process causes mineral dissolution and mechanical removal of carbonate rocks, creating multiscale secondary porosity that greatly affects the development of karst reservoirs. The carbonate rock weathering is mainly nucleated from fractures and bedding planes and spreads out for large areas, forming a ghost-rock karst system divided by different weathering intensities. Locally, where the hydrodynamic conditions are high total removal of the weathered rock lead to the rise of the cave network and eventually the collapse or subsidence of dolines and other karst landforms. This case study presents the use of 2D and 3D GPR data to map karst levels and features in depth of a karst system in the semiarid region of NE Brazil. Synthetic GPR data and direct observation on doline crack walls support the division of karst units into ghost-rock, alterite, and residual soil zones, marked by low-amplitude reflections, and fresh to slightly weathered bedrock, indicated by vertical high-amplitude GPR zones. High-resolution aerial images and digital elevation model provide the surface geometry and distribution of karst landforms, controlled by an orthogonal weathering/fracture system identified in the GPR profiles and time slices. In addition, the karst system was vertically divided into four zones and the area of occurrence of karst units in each zone was estimated. Pore space was then calculated for each zone, assuming porosities to the filling material. We analyzed the estimated pore space distribution compared with a gas-bearing karst reservoir in China. Brazilian Neoproterozoic carbonate rocks, dating from about 740–590 million years ago, contain the oldest karst-structured terrains on Earth, resulting in groundwater flow pathways in highly heterogeneous and anisotropic conduit networks. Unlike Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, in Neoproterozoic karst systems, groundwater circulates and stores practically through dissolution features characterized as tertiary porosity, as the rock's primary porosity is recrystallized, considered negligible. However, studies using hydrodispersive equilibrium and non-equilibrium models to estimate flow and transport parameters to base the hydrodynamic behavior of these areas are not common. This paper proposes this, by a set of techniques involving dye tracer tests and the analysis of breakthrough tracer curves (BTCs) in a highly karstified Neoproterozoic terrain. For this, three karst springsheds, in the east, west, and south areas of the São Miguel river watershed, in Alto São Francisco karst region, Brazil, were choose and studied with dye tracer tests using Rhodamine WT and Uranine during dry and wet seasons, associated with regional/local (hydro)geological-structural, geomorphological, and speleological data. The results identified spatial and seasonal variations of water flow and transport parameters, recharge and discharge zones, and water dynamic and speleogenetic evolutions. BTCs models showed the karst systems are very dynamic with seasonal variations, and heterogeneities (bypass, loops and stagnant zones) control the variation of flow and transport parameters. The hydrodispersive parameters (mean flow velocity, and longitudinal dispersion coefficient) and coefficients of non-equilibrium models (partition, β, and mass transfer, ω) show a direct dependence on hydrogeological and speleogenetic contexts. Furthermore, the comparison with other karst systems around the world showed that Neoproterozoic karst has a more stable hydrodynamic behavior under hydrological conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypogene dissolution‐precipitation processes strongly affect the petrophysical properties of carbonate rocks and fluid migration pathways in sedimentary basins. In many deep carbonate reservoirs, hypogene cavernous voids are often associated with silicified horizons. The diagenesis of silica in carbonate sequences is still a poorly‐investigated research topic. Studies exploring the complexity of silica dissolution‐precipitation patterns in hypogene cave analogues are therefore fundamental to unravel the diagenetic and speleogenetic processes that may affect this kind of reservoir. In this work, we investigated an exhumed and silicified Neoproterozoic carbonate sequence in Brazil hosting a 1.4 km‐long cave. Quartz mineralization and silicified textures were analyzed with a multidisciplinary approach combining petrography, fluid inclusion microthermometry, silicon‐oxygen stable isotope analyses and U‐Th‐Pb dating of monazite crystals. We found that an early silicification event caused the replacement of the dolostone layers with micro‐crystalline quartz forming chert nodules. This event was likely associated with mixing fluids (ancient Neoproterozoic seawater and hydrothermal solutions sourced from the underlying Mesoproterozoic basement) at relatively low temperatures (ca. 50–100°C) and shallow depth. After the tectonic deformation produced by the Brasiliano orogeny, silica dissolution was promoted by high temperature and alkaline hydrothermal solutions rising from the quartzite basement along deep‐rooted structures. Hypogene hydrothermal alteration promoted the dissolution of the cherty layers and the precipitation of chalcedony and megaquartz. Homogenization temperatures from primary fluid inclusions in megaquartz cement indicate minimum formation temperatures of 165–210°C. Similar temperature estimates (110–200°C) were obtained from the δ30Si and δ18O isotope systematics of quartz precipitated from hydrothermal solutions. The dissolved salts in the fluid inclusions were evaluated as NaCl + CaCl2 from microthermometric data combined with cryogenic Raman spectroscopy, corresponding to salinity ranging between 17 and 25 wt.%. No reliable age constraints for hydrothermal silica dissolution‐precipitation phases were obtained from monazite U‐Th‐Pb dating. However, our results, interpreted in the regional context of the São Francisco Craton, suggest that the Cambrian tectono‐thermal events could have been amongst the possible drivers for this hypogene process in the basin. We applied field structural data and isotope geochemical (δ13C, δ18O and 87Sr/86Sr) analyses to understand the relationship among calcite veins, fault damage zones and carbonate host rocks in a thrust fault damage zone in the Achado quarry, Irecê Basin in the São Francisco Craton, NE Brazil. Our results reveal three hydrological packages with different rheological behaviours in a stratified carbonate succession. The upper package includes the Achado fault damage zone that is characterised by interlayered dolomitised grainstones and mudstones. These rocks display high positive δ13C values (10‰–13‰), negative δ18O values (mean −6.34‰) and radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr) isotope values (0.70885–0.71519). A second package is marked by a cataclastic brittle shear zone lateral parallel to dolograinstones bedding. These rocks show low to positive δ13C values (−3.41‰ to +8.85‰), more positive δ18O values (mean −3.73‰) and radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr) isotope values (0.71039–0.71373). The lower package is characterised by well‐preserved pristine limestone succession that shows δ13C values ranging between −0.46‰ and +3.17‰, mean δ18O = −5.41‰ and less radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values (0.70762–0.70818). In contrast to the upper and intermediate packages, rocks from the lower one exhibit very low permeability and behaved as a seal for fluid migration. Fluid flow occurred several times during basin evolution, for example along syn‐rift fault damage zones, bedding‐parallel carbonate breccia, thrust faults, cataclastic shear zones, synorogenic conjugate shear fractures or joints and opening mode I fracture‐fill calcite veins. These fractures allowed pervasive fluid flow in the porous intermediate cataclastic shear zone where fluids flowed and formed veins, as diffuse fluid flow in randomly oriented fracture swarms, or channelised fluid flow in aligned fracture corridors. They record significant centimetre‐scale to km‐scale hydrological behaviour within carbonate layers. Most carbonates that are associated with veins, fault damage zones and hydraulic breccia were formed by fluids of the same origin with low δ13C (−6.0 to −2.0‰) and δ18O (−6.0 to −8.5‰) values, and more radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values compared to the carbonate host rocks. The drainage microbasin of the Bule stream drains an important part of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, known as one of the main metallogenetic provinces on the planet and of great importance for Brazilian mineral production. The surface water chemistry was analyzed to quantify the chemical weathering rates and the CO2 consumption associated with the weathering processes. Bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, and silica are the main ions dissolved in the basin, reflecting the local lithotype composed of dolomites, phyllites, and quartzites. The main source of dissolved elements for the basin is carbonate rocks, followed by rainfall. The sulfide oxidation process appeared as the main source of sulfate for the river (approximately 90%). The total weathering rate was 1.5 × 105 mol km−2 year−1 and the total CO2 consumption was 7.3 × 104 mol km−2 year−1, where carbonate rocks are mainly responsible for these flows (> 90%). The highest values were found at high flow, where for the carbonate phases, the weathering rate was 5.38 × 102 mol km−2 day−1, and for CO2 consumption, it was 2.92 × 102 mol km−2 day−1. Despite being a microbasin, the results are relevant when compared to large basins, showing the importance of small-scale studies of rivers that drain basins with a predominance of the lithological type. The object of this study is magnesian clay minerals present in carbonate rocks of the post-rift phase of the pre-salt in the Santos Basin. These rocks developed in an Aptian-age alkaline lacustrine environment. This study summarizes the formation of clay minerals associated with different lithotypes in a range of 19 m and a depth of more than 5100 m. They were characterized from petrographic analysis by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (total sample and clay fraction), and modeling by Newmod®; and examined and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. An approach based on identifying lithotypes and characterization of microsites allowed us to understand the occurrence of different clay minerals. Kerolite was the most abundant mineral in the sampled range. It occurs in lamellar aggregates under greater preservation of the original rock lamination and in association with spherulites and shrubs. The Stv/Ker mixed layers occurs in the same association, and formed finer unlaminated aggregates associated with the more intense dolomitization and silicification processes. Saponite occurs associated with detrital minerals forming clayey levels intercalated with microcrystalline carbonates. Fluids with a high Mg/Si and pH < 9 favor the precipitation of kerolite. The increase in pH during diagenesis may be responsible for the formation of Stv/Ker mixed layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
