Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB), caused by Exserohilum turcicum, is a devastating disease of corn in China. To enhance our understanding of NCLB epidemiology, the temporal progress and spatial patterns of NCLB were investigated. A susceptible corn cultivar, Xianyu 335, was planted in a field in Beijing in 2016 and 2017. Leaf lesions of NCLB on each plant were counted twice a week during the growing seasons. In addition, temporal disease progress was monitored for 8 weeks in three commercial corn fields in each of Yanqing, Miyun, Daxing, and Haidian Districts of Beijing in 2017, and the spatial patterns of diseased plants and NCLB lesion counts per plant were assessed in three commercial corn fields with moderate to high NCLB incidence in Yanqing District. The results demonstrated that a logistic model was the most appropriate to describe the temporal progress of NCLB incidence. The initial disease incidence was the key factor affecting disease epidemics under various conditions in the four districts of Beijing during the study. The higher the initial incidence of NCLB, the higher the final incidence. Thus, the earlier in the season NCLB incidence attained 1%, the higher was the final disease incidence. Greater than 1.0 variance-to-mean ratios suggested that the leaf lesions of NCLB tended to be aggregated on a plant. According to results from join-counts, variance of moving window averages, and semivariogram analysis, diseased corn plants and lesion numbers on each plant were aggregated in the field. The clustered pattern of NCLB lesions and infected plants suggested that conidia produced locally on diseased plants were important for disease spread within the field. The aggregated pattern of diseased plants suggested that plants should be sampled from more sites in a field to accurately estimate incidence of NCLB.

Despite the similar clinical and pathological features between Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease and Alzheimer's disease (AD), few studies have investigated the role of NPC genes in AD. To elucidate the role of NPC genes in AD, we sequenced NPC1 and NPC2 in 1192 AD patients and 2412 controls. Variants were divided into common variants and rare variants according to minor allele frequency (MAF). Common variant (MAF≥0.01) based association analysis was conducted by PLINK 1.9. Gene-based aggregation testing of rare variants was performed by Sequence Kernel Association Test-Optimal (SKAT-O test), respectively. Age at onset (AAO) and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) association studies were also performed with PLINK 1.9. Six common variants were identified and exhibited no association with AD. Gene-based aggregation testing revealed that both NPC1 and NPC2 were not associated with AD risk. Additionally, AAO and MMSE association studies revealed that no common variants were linked with AD endophenotypes. Taken together, our study indicated that NPC1 and NPC2 may not be implicated in AD pathogenesis in the Chinese population.

Propolis has exhibited effective antibacterial activities in preventing the growth of multiple pathogenic bacteria. However, the antibacterial activity of Chinese propolis against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is almost unknown. The present study aimed to explore the antibacterial activity and action mechanism of Chinese propolis ethanol extract (CPEE) against MRSA. Thirteen compounds of CPEE were identified using HPLC-DAD/Q-TOF-MS, and none of them showed better anti-MRSA activity than CPEE. The diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ) of CPEE was 20.1 mm. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CPEE was 32 mg/L, while the minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) against MRSA was 64 mg/L. Moreover, CPEE showed significant synergistic effects with β-lactam antibiotics (ampicillin and oxacillin). Nucleic acid and protein leakage assays showed that CPEE can stimulate the release of intracellular macromolecules by damaging the cell membrane integrity of MRSA. Live/dead-staining and SDS-PAGE assays further confirmed that CPEE could inhibit bacterial activities by disrupting the membrane. The reduction in PBP2a expression and β-lactamase activity, as shown by western blot and β-lactamase detection assays, suggested that CPEE was able to reverse the drug resistance of MRSA. These results demonstrated the anti-MRSA activity of CPEE was mainly due to changing the cell membrane and reversing resistance, which indicates that CPEE could be an attractive candidate for use in future food and medical applications.

To analyze the epidemiological distribution, clinical characteristics, and prognostic risk factors of patients having severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS).We enrolled 790 patients with SFTS divided into the ordinary group and the severe group, analyzed the clinical characteristics, and screened the risk factors of severious patients by univariate logistic regression analysis.Most of the 790 patients (SFTS) are farmers (84.56%). The proportion of patients with fieldwork history was 72.41%, of which 21.27% had a clear history of a tick bite and 98.61% were sporadic cases. The annual peak season is from April to November. 16.33% patients were not accompanied by fever. The incidence of severe thrombocytopenia was 47.59%. They were statistically significant between the 2 groups in indicators such as age, hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, bunyavirus nucleic acid load and mean platelet count (P .05). Multivariate non conditional Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors of the mild patients deteriorating severe disease were age (OR = 1.985, P ≤ .003), diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.702, P ≤ .001), coronary heart disease (OR = 1.381, P ≤ .003), platelet count (OR = 2.592, P ≤ .001), viral nucleic acid loading (OR = 3.908, P ≤ .001).The incidence population and seasonal distribution characteristics of patients with SFTS are obvious. The risk factors for poor prognosis of severe patients are old age, multiple basic medical histories, high viral load, a serious decrease of mean platelet count, and delay of treatment time.

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic and fatal neurodegenerative disease; accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin deficiency is associated with the risk of AD. However, studies attempting to elucidate the relationship between vitamins and AD varied widely. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin levels and AD in a cohort of the Chinese population. Methods: A total of 368 AD patients and 574 healthy controls were recruited in this study; serum vitamin A, B1, B6, B9, B12, C, D, and E were measured in all participants. Results: Compared with the controls, vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E were significantly reduced in AD patients. Lower levels of vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E were associated with the risk of AD. After adjusting for age and gender, low levels of vitamin B2, B9, and B12 were still related to the risk of AD. In addition, a negative correlation was determined between vitamin E concentration and Activity of Daily Living Scale score while no significant association was found between serum vitamins and age at onset, disease duration, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire score. Conclusion: We conclude that lower vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E might be associated with the risk of AD, especially vitamin B2, B9, and B12. And lower vitamin E might be related to severe ability impairment of daily activities.

Introduction: Paternal smoking associated with childhood overweight and obesity has been a concern, but studies have not investigated smoking exposure and smoking details. We investigated the association of exposures from paternal smoking as well as smoking details on offspring overweight/obesity. Methods: A total of 4,513 children (aged 7–8 years) in Shenzhen were enrolled. Four different exposures from paternal smoking as well as smoking quantity, duration of smoking, and age of starting smoking details were the exposure variables and demographic characteristics, and circumstances of birth, dietary intake, lifestyle, and nonpaternal-smoking exposure were covariates in the logistic regression analysis to determine the effect of paternal smoking on childhood overweight/obesity, estimating odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Paternal smoking was positively associated with childhood overweight/obesity (p < 0.05). Moreover, only preconception exposure, and both pre- and postconception exposure were significantly associated with childhood overweight/obesity (OR 1.54 [95% CI: 1.14–2.08] and OR 1.73 [95% CI: 1.14–2.61], respectively), restricted to boys but not girls. Furthermore, for children with only preconception paternal-smoking exposure, the dose-response relation was positive between smoking quantity, duration of smoking, age at starting, and overweight/obesity for boy offspring (p trend p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that paternal smoking is associated with boys’ overweight/obesity, and this association may be due to the paternal-smoking exposure before conception rather than the postnatal exposure to paternal smoking. Reducing paternal-smoking exposure before conception might help reduce overweight/obesity in boys.

Water, energy and food are three essential resources for the socio-economic system, and they are interlinked. The coordination of their internal relations is worth studying. We conduct a coordination evaluation method to assess the water-energy-food nexus (WEF Nexus) in China’s provinces. By combining the coupling model and the coupling coordination model, we measure the comprehensive evaluation index and coupling coordination degree of China’s 30 provinces from 2005 to 2017. First, the results show the provincial comprehensive evaluation index had a slow upward trend. The comprehensive evaluation index of the southern region was higher than that of the north, and the eastern was higher than the west. Second, the coordination degree of WEF Nexus in China’s 30 provinces has reached high level in the horizontal coupling stage, and the overall degree of coupling coordination was on the rise. In 2017, the WEF Nexus coupling coordination degree of most provinces reached 0.700 or more, which was intermediate-coordinated. In the six years, the 30 provinces have experienced five types of coupling coordination degree: near coordinated, barely coordinated, primary coordinated, intermediate-coordinated, and well-coordinated.

Background The pandemic of COVID‐19 has a persistent impact on global health, yet its sequelae need to be addressed at a wide scale around the globe. This study aims to investigate the characteristics, prevalence, and risk factors for mid‐term (>6 months) clinical sequelae in a cohort of COVID‐19 survivors. Methods Totally 715 COVID‐19 survivors discharged before April 1, 2020, from three medical centers in Wuhan, China, were included. The longitudinal study was conducted by telephone interviews based on a questionnaire including the clinical sequelae of general, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. Demographics and some characteristics of clinical sequelae of the survivors were recorded and analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the risk factors for the sequelae. Results The median time interval from discharge to telephone interview was 225.0 days. The COVID‐19 survivors' median ages were 69 years, and 51.3% were male. Among them, 29.9% had at least one clinical sequela. There were 19.2%, 22.7%, and 5.0% of the survivors reporting fatigue, respiratory symptoms, and cardiovascular symptoms, respectively. Comorbidities, disease severity, the application of mechanical ventilation and high‐flow oxygen therapy, and the history of re‐admission were associated with the presence of clinical sequelae. Conclusions Our study provides further evidence for the prevalence and characteristics of clinical sequelae of COVID‐19 survivors, suggesting long‐term monitoring and management is needed for their full recovery.

China, as the world's largest carbon dioxide emitter, is bound to assume the important responsibility of energy conservation and emission reduction. To this end, each city, led by representative municipalities, must enhance efforts in carbon emission reduction to jointly realize China's low-carbon transition. Taking four representative municipalities, namely, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing as the case cities, this paper establishes a decomposition analysis for the driving factors of carbon emissions by applying the LMDI method covering data from 2007 to 2017. Kaya identity is used to decompose the effects into eight driving factors: GDP effect, industrial structure effect, energy intensity effect, overall energy structure effect, population effect, urbanization effect, per capita energy consumption effect, urban and rural energy structure effect. The results show that at the municipality level, the driving factors that contribute to carbon emissions are the GDP growth effect and the population effect, with the former still being the most important factor in the municipalities with faster economic growth; and industrial structure effect is the most important factor that inhibits carbon emissions, followed by energy structure effect. This paper considers the driving factors of both the production side and the residential consumption side from the city level. The research reveals the main driving factors that effect the carbon emissions of megacities in developing countries, and highlights the leading role of megacities in terms of carbon emission reduction in China and even the world. The paper thereby puts forward policy implications for China's economic policies.

Using the theory of transitivity system within Systemic Functional Linguistics as the theoretical basis and the white paper named Fighting COVID-19: China in Action, which was published by the Chinese government on June 7, 2020 as the corpus, with the help of corpus analysis tool, UAM Corus Tool 3, this paper uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the construction of China’s national image. The results show that the frequency of material processes is extremely high, which is 88.26%, while existential processes and behavioral processes occupy only an extremely small proportion, 0.73% and 0.09% respectively. Relational processes are in the second rank, 5.34%. The frequencies of verbal processes and mental processes are similar, accounting for 2.97% and 2.6% respectively. Through a detailed analysis of the six transitivity processes, a national image that advocates “people supremacy”, selfless collectivism, with strong executive ability and mobilization, and a great responsibility in the international society is found to be constructed. This paper lays a foundation for further studying China’s national image in the path of SFL. It also sheds some light on the construction of China’s image in the official government document.

This paper investigates the timing of Chinese ODI under exchange rate uncertainty by employing the Cox proportional hazards model. Using matched data this paper finds both exchange rate level and volatility are the important determinants, and RMB depreciation and greater volatility will deter ODI. Such adverse effect is found more striking for non-SOEs, firms in the eastern region, and non-exporting firms. With China’s recent exchange rate formation mechanism reform, the impact of exchange rate uncertainty is expected to be stronger. These findings have important implications for China’s exchange rate regime reform and its “Going Global” strategy.

Family-oriented medical decision-making in China is founded on Confucian family-determination. The value and necessity of individual autonomy are marginalized in theory and practice. However, the dilemma in end-of-life (EOL) decision-making caused by the lack of advance care planning (ACP) has been increasingly concerned by the public. This study explores the value and necessity of ACP practice in China from the perspective of healthcare professionals (HCPs).We conducted semi-structured interviews with five neurological physicians and five neurological nurses from a Grade 3 Class A hospital in Beijing.The results showed that in situations with a poor prognosis, respondents tended to believe that as part of ACP regarding, a patient's right to refuse invasive treatments should be followed, although all ten interviewees agreed that nasogastric feeding tubes (NGTs) should be maintained. Factors influencing a families' considerations in EOL decision making included prognosis and age, prior similar experiences, others' moral judgement, and the advice of HCPs. Four respondents had experienced patients expressing their wishes for EOL treatments and reported some obstacles in considering these wishes. Seven respondents considered creating an ACP themselves, two respondents doubted it would work in practice, and one respondent thought it was unnecessary.The differences in the concept and practice of palliative care may be significantly related to the differences in the idea of ACP between Chinese and Western. The family-oriented decision-making model under Confucian culture cannot replace the ACP practice. Clinical situations and therapeutic measures that reveal the necessity and value of ACP should be the priority exploration to advance ACP practice. The practice of ACP and palliative care should be promoted simultaneously at the national level, and legislation for advance directives (ADs) is necessary for mainland China.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) overlap clinically and pathologically. However, the role of FTD-associated genes in patients with AD remained unclear. To explore the relationship between FTD-associated genes and AD risk, we investigated 14 FTD-associated genes via targeted next-generation sequencing panel or whole-genome sequencing in a total of 721 AD patients and 1391 controls. Common variant-based association analysis and gene-based association test of rare variants were performed by PLINK 1.9 and Sequence Kernel Association Test-Optimal (SKAT-O test) respectively. As a result, 2 common variants, UBQLN1 rs1044175 (p value = 2.76 × 10−4) and MAPT rs2258689 (p value = 5.71 × 10−4), differed significantly between AD patients and controls. Additionally, gene-based analysis aggregating rare variants demonstrated that HNRNPA1 reached statistical significance in the SKAT-O test (p value = 2.24 × 10−3). Protein–protein interaction analysis showed that UBQLN1, MAPT, and HNRNPA1 interacted with proteins encoded by well-recognized AD-associated genes. Our study indicated that UBQLN1, MAPT, and HNRNPA1 are implicated in the pathogenesis of AD in the mainland Chinese population.

Background Eliminating malaria and preventing re-establishment of malaria transmission in border areas requires universal coverage of malaria surveillance and a rapid response to any threats (i.e. malaria cues) of re-establishing transmission. Main text Strategy 1: Intensive interventions within 2.5 km-wide perimeter along the border to prevent border-spill malaria. The area within 2.5 km along the international border is the travel radius of anopheline mosquitoes. Comprehensive interventions should include: (1) proactive and passive case detection, (2) intensive vector surveillance, (3) evidence-based vector control, and (4) evidence-based preventative treatment with anti-malarial drugs. Strategy 2: Community-based malaria detection and screening of migrants and travellers in frontier townships. Un-permitted travellers cross borders frequently and present in frontier townships. Maintenance of intensified malaria surveillance should include: (1) passive malaria detection in the township hospitals, (2) seek assistance from villager leaders and health workers to monitor cross border travellers, and refer febrile patients to the township hospitals and (3) the county’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention maintain regular proactive case detection. Strategy 3: Universal coverage of malaria surveillance to detect malaria cues. Passive detection should be consolidated into the normal health service. Health services personnel should remain vigilant to ensure universal coverage of malaria detection and react promptly to any malaria cues. Strategy + 1: Strong collaborative support with neighbouring countries. Based on the agreement between the two countries, integrated control strategies should be carried out to reduce malaria burden for both countries. There should be a clear focus on the border areas between neighbouring countries. Conclusion The 3 + 1 strategy is an experience summary of border malaria control and elimination, and then contributed to malaria elimination in Yunnan’s border areas, China. Nevertheless, Yunnan still has remaining challenges of re-establishment of malaria transmission in the border areas, and the 3 + 1 strategy should still be carried out.

The circular economy represents an alternative closed-loop production and consumption patterns instead of traditional linear take-make-waste approaches. It presents a new vision with global sustainability where plastic waste is viewed as a material that can be reused, to avoid depleting natural resources. In this context, it is essential to redesign the global reverse logistics network (GRLN) by incorporating the existing facilities across national boundaries into the integrated global recycling system. A mean-variance robust model with quadratic functions is developed to address the time-ambiguous currency exchange rate, the ocean freight rate, and the carbon prices. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first efforts to evaluate the effects of the multiplicative relationships between the uncertain elements, e.g. currency exchange rate and carbon trading prices. In the proposed model, the economic and the environmental performances of a GRLN are evaluated by the robustness coefficient. The application of the model is demonstrated in a sample case of the PWR between China and Belgium. The analysis shows that a lower robustness coefficient leads to a higher cost of the GRLN, but lower emissions. It is worthy to note that considering the maritime emission is not definite to guarantee global net sustainability. Moreover, a social GRLN network leads to a more cost-efficient system compared to developing two recycling networks individually in the importing and the exporting countries.

Objective Currently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread worldwide and become a global health concern. Here, we report a familial cluster of six patients infected with severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a northern Chinese region and share our local experience with regard the control of COVID-19. Methods The demographic data, clinical features, laboratory examinations, and epidemiological characteristics of enrolled cases were collected and analyzed. Two family members (Cases 1 and 2) had Hubei exposure history and were admitted to the hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19; eight familial members who had contact with them during the incubation period underwent quarantine in a hospital. We closely followed up all the family members and analyzed their clinical outcome. Results Case 3 had negative SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results but was suspected to have COVID-19 because of radiographic abnormalities. Cases 4 and 5 developed symptomatic COVID-19. Case 6 was considered an asymptomatic carrier as his SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR result was positive. The other four family members with close contacts to COVID-19 patients had no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions Our findings suggest that COVID-19 has infectivity during the incubation period and preventive quarantine is effective for controlling an outbreak of COVID-19 infection.

Aim The role of vascular dementia (VaD)‐associated genes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains elusive despite similar clinical and pathological features. We aimed to explore the relationship between these genes and AD in the Chinese population. Methods Eight VaD‐associated genes were screened by a targeted sequencing panel in a sample of 3604 individuals comprising 1192 AD patients and 2412 cognitively normal controls. Variants were categorized into common variants and rare variants according to minor allele frequency (MAF). Common variant (MAF ≥ 0.01)‐based association analysis was conducted by PLINK 1.9. Rare variant (MAF, In this study, we systematically explored the relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD)‐associated genes in a total of 3604 individuals in mainland China. The common variant association test revealed that common variants in COLA41 were nominally associated with AD. Gene‐based association analysis indicated that HTRA1 may contribute to the etiology of AD. The rare variant association test showed that variants in NOTCH3, COL4A1, and CST3 exhibited nominal association with AD risk. Additionally, variants in GSN, ITM2B, and COL4A1 may be involved in the development of AD endophenotypes.

The Omicron transmission has infected nearly 600,000 people in Shanghai from March 26 to May 31, 2022. Combined with different control measures taken by the government in different periods, a dynamic model was constructed to investigate the impact of medical resources, shelter hospitals and aerosol transmission generated by clustered nucleic acid testing on the spread of Omicron. The parameters of the model were estimated by least square method and MCMC method, and the accuracy of the model was verified by the cumulative number of asymptomatic infected persons and confirmed cases in Shanghai from March 26 to May 31, 2022. The result of numerical simulation demonstrated that the aerosol transmission figured prominently in the transmission of Omicron in Shanghai from March 28 to April 30. Without aerosol transmission, the number of asymptomatic subjects and symptomatic cases would be reduced to 130,000 and 11,730 by May 31, respectively. Without the expansion of shelter hospitals in the second phase, the final size of asymptomatic subjects and symptomatic cases might reach 23.2 million and 4.88 million by May 31, respectively. Our results also revealed that expanded vaccination played a vital role in controlling the spread of Omicron. However, even if the vaccination rate were 100%, the transmission of Omicron should not be completely blocked. Therefore, other control measures should be taken to curb the spread of Omicron, such as widespread antiviral therapies, enhanced testing and strict tracking quarantine measures. This perspective could be utilized as a reference for the transmission and prevention of Omicron in other large cities with a population of 10 million like Shanghai.

Objective: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is primarily a malignant disorder affecting the elderly. We aimed to compare the outcomes of different treatment patterns in elderly AML patients and to propose a prognostic scoring system that could predict survival and aid therapeutic decisions. Methods: Patients aged ≥ 60 years who had been diagnosed with AML at 7 hospitals in China were enrolled (n = 228). Treatment patterns included standard chemotherapy, low intensity therapy, and best supportive care (BSC). Results: The early mortality rates were 31%, 6.8%, and 6.3% for the BSC, low intensity therapy, and standard chemotherapy groups, respectively. The complete remission rate of the standard chemotherapy group was higher than that of the low intensity therapy group. The median overall survival (OS) was 561 days and 222 days for the standard chemotherapy and low intensity therapy groups, respectively, and were both longer than that of the BSC group (86 days). Based on multivariate analyses, we defined a prognostic scoring system that enabled classification of patients into 3 risk groups, in an attempt to predict the OS of patients receiving chemotherapies and low intensity therapies. Low and intermediate risk patients benefited more from standard chemotherapies than from low intensity therapies. However, the median OS was comparable between standard chemotherapies and low intensity therapies in high risk patients. Conclusions: Our prognostic scoring system could predict survival and help select appropriate therapies for elderly AML patients. Standard chemotherapy is important for elderly AML patients, particularly for those categorized into low and intermediate risk groups.

Few investigations have assessed the impact of short-term ambient temperature change on pneumonia risk. We aimed to study the relation of temperature variability (TV) with daily hospitalizations for pneumonia in China. We conducted a time-series study in 184 major cities by extracting daily hospital data between 2014 and 2017 from a medical insurance claims database of 0.28 billion beneficiaries. TV was calculated as standard deviation of daily minimum and maximum temperatures over exposure days. We estimated associations of pneumonia admissions with TV for each city using over-dispersed generalized linear models controlling for weather conditions and ambient air pollution, and pooled city-specific estimates using random effects meta-analyses. We also investigated exposure-response relationship curve and potential effect modifiers. We identified 4.2 million pneumonia hospitalizations during the study period. TV was positively related to daily pneumonia admissions. At the national-average level, each 1-°C increase in TV at 0-6 days' exposure corresponded to a 0.65 % (95 % CI: 0.34 %-0.96 %) increase in pneumonia admissions. An approximately linear exposure-response curve for the relation of TV with pneumonia admission was noted. The relations were more evident in cities with larger average age (P = 0.038). As the first study in China to assess the impact of temperature change on pneumonia on a national scale, our results indicated that acute TV exposure was related to higher admissions for pneumonia. Our findings should provide new insight into the health impacts associated with climate change.

Study on effect of fertilization methods on maternal and perinatal outcomes with respect to TB during pregnancy was scarce. This study aimed to analyze maternal and perinatal outcomes in active TB cases afterClinical data of 80 pregnant women with active TB hospitalized at Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center between June 1st, 2014 and November 30th, 2020 were extracted and retrospectively analyzed. History of receiving IVF was recorded at admission and its association with maternal and perinatal outcomes were assessed using multivariable logistic regression models with adjustment for potential confounders.Of the 80 pregnant women with active TB, 28 (35.0%) received IVF treatment and 52 (65.0%) did not receive IVF treatment. After adjusting for potential confounders, receiving IVF was associated with worse maternal and perinatal outcomes, including maternal criticality (21.4 vs. 2.0%, adjusted OR = 28.3,The additional risk of TB to women receiving IVF treatment is a public health challenge specific to countries with a high tuberculosis burden. Increased awareness of latent tuberculosis infection in women receiving IVF treatment is needed.

Taking the Jianghugongmi producing area as the research object, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soil of the study area were sampled and determined. The correlation of heavy metals was discussed using the multivariate statistical method, the spatial distribution interpolation analysis of heavy metals was carried out using ArcGIS 10.2, the quantitative source analysis of heavy metal pollution was carried out using the enrichment factor (EF) and PMF methods, and the potential ecological risk was evaluated. The results showed that the contents of the soil heavy metals As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn were lower than the screening values specified in the standard for soil pollution risk control of agricultural land (GB 15618-2018), and the soil ecological environment risk was low; the maximum values of Cr and Ni exceeded the risk screening values, but the risk was low. The main distribution range of pH in the study area was 6.05-6.69, which was suitable for rice growth. The Mohe River indicated the spatial distribution of pH and heavy metals, which was closely related to the supergene geochemical characteristics of the elements. However, Hg and Cd showed different spatial distribution characteristics under human influence. Hg was distributed in the middle and high value distribution area along the west side of the river, and the spatial distribution of Cd was significantly different from north to south. The quantitative source analysis results based on the EF method and PMF showed that the main sources of heavy metals in the study area were agricultural sources, mixed sources, coal sources, and natural sources. The contribution rates of various sources accounted for 24.2%, 35.4%, 9.5%, and 30.9%, respectively. Background Albright’s hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) is an inherited disorder which is caused by an inactivating variant in the GNAS gene. AHO appears associated to either pseudohypoparathyroidism 1a (PHP1a) when GNAS gene is maternally inherited or to pseudo-pseudohypoparathyroidism (PPHP) when it is paternally inherited. We describe the clinical and biochemical characteristics of two patients, a boy and his mother with a novel heterozygous missense variant of GNAS gene. Case presentation The boy presented with typical AHO phenotype (early-onset obesity, round face, short neck, shortened fifth metacarpal bone, developmental retardation, but without short stature and subcutaneous calcifications), multiple hormone resistance including PTH, TSH and ACTH, and mild calcification in the right basal ganglia. The mother only presented with brachydactyly and short stature, without hormone resistance and other signs of AHO. Whole-exome sequencing identified in the son and his mother a novel heterozygous missense variant (p. Val375Leu) in exon 13 of GNAS gene. The diagnosis of PHP-1a for the son and PPHP for the mother were confirmed. Conclusion This study further expands the spectrum of known GNAS pathogenic variants, and also demonstrates the heterogeneous phenotype of AHO due to a novel GNAS pathogenic variant.

To understand how malaria could be eliminated in the original hyperendmic area for malaria along international borders in Yunnan Province, malaria situation and control were described on the basis of seven phases. At last the experiences and lessons of the program that reduced border malaria from hyperendmicity to malaria-free status were summarized. Malaria control and elimination area were particularly difficult in the Yunnan border. The achievement can be attributed to high political commitment, strategic and technical innovations based on the actual locality, effective collaboration and communication with neighbouring countries to carry out cross border interventions. Other border areas might perform their own pilot interventions based on their local context, including malaria burden, governing system, health service structure contextualized based on their socioeconomic development and ecology, and then a local decision could be made according to their own trial results.

ObjectivesExamination of the prevalence, influence factors and patterns of multimorbidity among the elderly people in Guangzhou, China.DesignCross-sectional study.Participants31 708 community-dwelling elderly people aged 65 and over.Primary and secondary outcome measuresPrevalence, influence factors and patterns of multimorbidity in seven chronic conditions among the participants. A multistage, stratified random sampling was adopted for selection of health records in the residents’ health records system of Guangzhou. Data mining by association rule mining analysis was used to explore the correlations and multimorbidity patterns between seven chronic diseases.ResultsThe prevalence of morbidity was 55.0% (95% CI 40.1% to 60.1%) and the multimorbidity was 15.2% (95% CI 12.4% to 18.4%) among the participants. Elderly, women, higher education level, being single, living in urban areas and having medical insurance were more likely to have chronic diseases and multimorbidity. Data mining by association rule mining analysis reveals patterns of multimorbidity among the participants, including coexistence of hypertension and diabetes (support: 12.5%, confidence: 17.6%), hypertension and coronary heart disease (support: 4.4%, confidence: 5.7%), diabetes and coronary heart disease (support: 1.6%, confidence: 5.7%), diabetes, coronary heart disease and hypertension (support: 1.4%, confidence: 4.4%).ConclusionsA high prevalence of morbidity (especially on hypertension and diabetes) and a relatively low multimorbidity of chronic diseases exist in elderly people. Data mining of residents’ health records will help for strengthening the management of residents’ health records in community health service centres of Guangzhou, China.

The previously monotypic genus Aduncothrips Ananthakrishnan from India is newly recorded from China with three new species: A. albus sp. n., A. huapingensis sp. n., A. kailiensis sp. n. The genus Desmidothrips Mound from Australia is synonymized with Aduncothrips, and the Japanese species A. japonicus (Masumoto & Okajima) is newly recorded in China with first description of the male. A key to the seven known species of Aduncothrips is provided. Males in this genus, where known, have maxillary palps 3-segmented with segment II undivided, and tergite IX without claspers.

BackgroundLung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) are the two most common subtypes of lung cancer. Previously, they were categorized into one histological subtype known as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and often treated similarly. However, increasing evidence suggested that LUAD and LUSC should be classified and treated as different cancers. But yet, detailed differences in clinical features between LUAD and LUSC have not been well described.MethodsA cohort of 142 Chinese patients with 111 LUAD and 31 LUSC cases were consecutively enrolled from April 2019 to October 2020 in Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital. The clinical features of the patients were retrospectively analyzed and compared in the terms of general information, clinicopathologic characteristics, imaging findings and laboratory data.ResultsIn comparison with LUAD, LUSC patients had a significantly higher proportion of males, smokers, drinkers, higher-stage cases. The mean tumor size in LUSC patients was significantly larger than that in LUAD patients. Compared with LUAD patients, more of patients with LUSC had cough, fever and abundant sputum symptoms. Besides that, more bacterial infections and fungal infections were found in LUSC patients than that in LUAD patients. Imaging data shows that ground-glass opacity and patchy shadows in radiological films were more frequent in LUAD patients than that in LUSC patients. In addition to initial laboratory data, LUSC patients had higher levels of leukocytes, platelets, and creatinine that of LUAD patients.ConclusionsTogether, these results suggested that there exist distinct differences between LUAD and LUSC subtypes; LUSC may be a more malignant type in comparison with LUAD. Our findings may have potential implications in clinical settings. However, further multicenter studies are needed to validate these findings in a larger sample size.

Background Border malaria is one of the most intractable problems hindering malaria elimination worldwide. Movement of both the human population and anopheline mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium spp. can cause cross-border malaria transmission. The Yunnan border area was still hyperendemic for malaria in the early part of this century. The objective of this case study was to analyze the strategies, interventions and impacts of malaria control and elimination in the Yunnan border area. Main text A total of 10,349 malaria cases and 17.1 per 10,000 person-years of annual parasite incidence (API) were reported in the border area in 2003. Based on natural village-based stratification, integrated interventions, including mass drug administration for radical cures and preventive treatment, clinically presumptive treatment of all febrile patients for malaria and indoor residual spraying or dipping bed nets with insecticides were successfully carried out from 2003 to 2013. The overall API was reduced to 0.6 per 10,000 person-years by 2013, while effective cross-border collaboration interventions dramatically reduced the malaria burden in the neighbouring border areas of Myanmar. From 2014 forward, the comprehensive strategy, including universal coverage of surveillance to detect malaria cases, a rapid response to possible malaria cases and effective border collaboration with neighbouring areas, successfully eliminated malaria and prevented reintroduction of malaria transmission in the Yunnan border area. Conclusions In Yunnan malaria burden has successfully reduced by dynamically accurate stratification and comprehensive interventions; and then the region achieved elimination and prevented reintroduction of malaria transmission through intensive surveillance, rapid response and border collaboration. Other border areas should perform their own intervention trials to develop their own effective strategy. Graphical Abstract

Background and AimsHeterogeneity exists among patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) with regard to the risk of recurrent events. Current guidelines have definitely refined the disease and we aimed to examine the practicability in Chinese population.MethodsA cohort of 9944 patients with ASCVD was recruited. Recurrent events occurred during an average of 38.5 months’ follow-up were collected. The respective and combinative roles of major ASCVD (mASCVD) events and high-risk conditions, being defined by 2018 AHA/ACC guideline, in coronary severity and outcome were studied.ResultsThe number of high-risk conditions was increased with increasing number of mASCVD events (1.95 ± 1.08 vs. 2.16 ± 1.10 vs. 2.42 ± 1.22). Trends toward the higher to the highest frequency of multi-vessel coronary lesions were found in patients with 1- (71.1%) or ≥2 mASCVD events (82.8%) when compared to those without (67.9%) and in patients with 2- (70.5%) or ≥3 high-risk conditions (77.4%) when compared to those with 0-1 high-risk condition (61.9%). The survival rate was decreased by 6.2% between none- and ≥2 mASCVD events or by 3.5% between 0-1 and ≥3 high-risk conditions. Interestingly, diabetes was independently associated with outcome in patients with 1- [1.54(1.06-2.24)] and ≥2 mASCVD events [1.71(1.03-2.84)]. The positive predictive values were increased among groups with number of mASCVD event increasing (1.10 vs. 1.54 vs. 1.71).ConclusionPropitious refinement of ASCVD might be reasonable to improve the survival. Concomitant diabetes was differently associated with the incremental risk among different ASCVD categories, suggesting the need of an appropriate estimate rather than a ‘blanket’ approach in risk stratification.

Background The global spread of infectious diseases is currently a prominent threat to public health, with the accelerating pace of globalization and frequent international personnel intercourse. The present study examined the epidemiological characteristics of overseas imported cases of acute infectious diseases in Guangzhou, China. Methods We retrospectively investigated the distribution of diseases, demographic characteristics, and temporal and spatial variations of imported cases of acute infectious diseases in Guangzhou based on the surveillance data of notifiable infectious diseases from 2005 to 2019, provided by Guangzhou center for Disease Control and Prevention. The Cochran-Armitage trend test was applied to examine the trend in the number of imported cases over time. Results A total of 1,025 overseas imported cases of acute infectious diseases were identified during the study period. The top three diseases were dengue (67.12%), malaria (12.39%), and influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 (4.10%). Imported cases were predominantly males, with a sex ratio of 2.6: 1 and 75.22% of the cases were those aged 20–49 years. Businessmen, workers, students and unemployed persons accounted for a large proportion of the cases (68.49%) and many of the cases came from Southeast Asia (59.02%). The number of imported cases of acute infectious diseases increased during the study period and hit 318 in 2019. A clear seasonal pattern was observed in the number of imported cases with a peak period between June and November. Imported cases were reported in all of the 11 districts in Guangzhou and the central districts were more seriously affected compared with other districts. Conclusions The burden of dengue imported from overseas was substantial and increasing in Guangzhou, China, with the peak period from June to November. Dengue was the most common imported disease. Most imported cases were males aged 20–49 years and businessmen. Further efforts, such as strengthening surveillance of imported cases, paying close attention to the epidemics in hotspots, and improving the ability to detect the imported cases from overseas, are warranted to control infectious diseases especially in the center of the city with a higher population density highly affected by imported cases.

Urban parks play an important role in tackling several urban challenges such as air pollution, urban heat, physical inactivity, social isolation, and stress. In order to fully seize the benefits of urban parks, it is important that they are attractive for various groups of residents. While several studies have investigated residents’ preferences for urban park attributes, most of them have focused on a single geographical context. This study aimed to investigate differences in park preferences, specifically between Dutch and Chinese park users. We collected data in the Netherlands and China using an online stated choice experiment with videos of virtual parks. The data were analyzed with a random parameter mixed logit model to identify differences in preferences for park attributes between Chinese and Dutch citizens, controlling for personal characteristics. Although the results showed a general preference for parks with many trees, several differences were found between the Dutch and Chinese respondents. These differences concerned vegetation (composition of trees and flowers), the presence of benches and play facilities, and could probably be explained by differences in park use, values of nature, and landscape preferences. The findings of this study can be used as design guidelines by urban planners and landscape designers to design attractive and inclusive parks for different target groups.

To explore the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from vehicular exhaust sources and evaporative sources with ethanol gasoline (E10) as the main fuel, VOCs sampling campaigns were carried out in the north third ring tunnel of Zhengzhou city for two consecutive weeks in December 2019. In addition, the characteristics of traffic flow and environmental information were also monitored in the tunnel. Firstly, 106 VOCs were quantified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and then source apportionment of VOCs in the tunnel was carried out using a positive matrix factorization (PMF5.0)-chemical mass balance (CMB8.2) composite model. Finally, the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) of vehicle exhaust sources and evaporative sources were analyzed using the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) and fractional aerosol coefficient (FAC). Medicine food homologous (MFH) plants and wholegrains have gained increasing attention for prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Substantial evidence supports the effectiveness of intermittent energy restriction (IER) in T2D management. However, there are few studies that report intermittent use of a low-calorie pre-prepared food including MFH plants and wholegrains in T2D. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Chinese Medical Nutrition Therapy (CMNT), a MFH plants and wholegrains diet accompanied by IER, on glycemic control and potential mechanism. Ten-week-old diabetic db/db mice were randomly divided into CMNT group (feeding low-calorie mouse CMNT diet in day 1-4 and ad libitum regular chow for up to 7 days per cycle) and control group (ad libitum access to regular chow). The results showed that CMNT reduced fasting blood glucose, improved glucose tolerance with higher insulin secretion, attenuated macrophage infiltration, promoted β-cell proliferation of pancreatic islets, and increased diabetes-improving microbiota (Bacteroides, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Coprococcus_1) in db/db mice. Additionally, we performed a pilot study evaluating CMNT in thirty-nine T2D patients without obesity. Participants with T2D randomly assigned to two groups: CMNT group (receiving a consecutive 5-day low-calorie human CMNT diet with 10 days of habitual eating per cycle for 90 days) and control group (continuing on a normal diet). We observed an improvement in glycemic control in CMNT group with significant reduction in HbA1c, fasting glucose, 2 h postprandial blood glucose but control group were not affected. After CMNT intervention, the abundance of the phylum Bacteroidetes, and genus Bacteroides, Parabacteroides and Roseburia were significantly higher than baseline in T2D patient, which were closely associated with glycemic control. These findings suggested that CMNT is a promising nutritional intervention approach in diabetes management.
