There is growing recognition of the potential of migration to contribute to climate-change adaptation. Yet, there is limited evidence to what degree, under what conditions, for whom, and with which limitations this is effectively the case. We argue that this results from a lack of recognition and systematic incorporation of sociospatiality--the nested, networked, and intersectional nature of migration-as-adaptation. Our central objective is to utilize the translocal social-resilience approach to overcome these gaps, to identify processes and structures that shape the social resilience of translocal livelihood systems, and to illustrate the mechanisms behind the multiplicity of possible resilience outcomes. Translocal livelihood constellations anchored in rural Thailand as well as in domestic and international destinations of Thai migrants serve as illustrative empirical cases. Data were gathered through a multisited and mixed-methods research design. This paper highlights the role of the distinct but interlinked situations and operational logics at places of origin and destination, as well as the different positionalities and resulting vulnerabilities, roles, commitments, and practices of individuals and households with regard to resilience. Based on the empirical results, the paper distills a generalized typology of five broad categories of resilience outcomes, which explicitly considers sociospatiality. Our approach helps to grasp the complexity of migration-as-adaptation and to avoid simplistic conclusions about the benefits and costs of migration for adaptation--both of which are necessary for sound, evidence-based, migration-as-adaptation policymaking. This study investigates the effects of climate change on the sediment loads of the Ping and Wang River basins and their contribution to the sediment dynamics of the lower Chao Phraya River basin in Thailand. The various climate models under different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenarios are employed to project sediment loads in future. The findings indicate a significant increase in river flow approximately 20% in the Ping River (PR) and 35% in the Wang River (WR) by the mid-21st century and continuing into the distant future. Consequently, this is expected to result in sediment loads up to 0.33 × 10 6  t/y in the PR and 0.28 × 10 6  t/y in the WR. This escalation is particularly notable under the RCP 8.5 scenario, which assumes higher greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the research provides insights into the potential positive implications for the Chao Phraya Delta's coastal management. Without further damming in the Ping and Wang River basins, the anticipated rise in sediment supply could aid in mitigating the adverse effects of land subsidence and sea-level rise, which have historically caused extensive shoreline retreat in the delta region, particularly around Bangkok Metropolis. Oil palms (OP) produce palm oil, a unique commodity without commercial alternatives. A serious disease of OP is basal stem rot (BSR) caused by Ganoderma boninense Pat. Climate change will likely increase BSR, thereby causing mortality of OP and reduced yields of palm oil. Work is being undertaken to produce modified OP (mOP) to resist BSR, although this will take decades for full development, if successfully produced at all. mOP will not be 100% effective, and it would be useful to know the effect of mOP on the key parameters of BSR incidence, OP mortality, and yield loss. The current paper employed CLIMEX modeling of suitable climates for OP and modeling narratives for Indonesia and Thailand. Indonesia is the largest producer of OP and Thailand is a much smaller manufacturer, and it was informative to compare these two countries. The gains from using mOP were substantial compared to the current production of some other continents and countries. The current paper, for the first time, assessed how climate change will affect BSR parameters for conventional and mOP. The intensity and frequency of hydro-meteorological hazards have increased due to fast-growing urbanisation activities and climate change. Hybrid approaches that combine grey infrastructure and Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs) have been applied as an adaptive and resilient strategy to cope with climate change uncertainties and incorporate other co-benefits. This research aims to investigate the feasibility of Real Time Control (RTC) for NBS operation in order to reduce flooding and improve their effectiveness. The study area is the irrigation and drainage system of the Rangsit Area in Thailand. The results show that during the normal flood events, the RTC system effectively reduces water level at the Western Raphiphat Canal Station compared to the system without RTC or with additional storage. Moreover, the RTC system facilitates achieving the required minimum volume and increasing the volume in the retentions. These findings highlight the potential of using RTC to improve the irrigation and drainage system operation as well as NBS implementation to reduce flooding. The RTC system can also assists in equitable water distribution between Klongs and retention areas, while also increasing the water storage in the retention areas. This additional water storage can be utilized for agricultural purposes, providing further benefits. It has become common to attribute the growing frequency and severity of floods to climate change. But the factors behind flooding are many, and climate change often disappears from the equation at the local level. This study draws on interviews with key informants and community members and focus group discussions to explore the increasing incidence of flooding in two sub-districts in Eastern Thailand. To our surprise, there was little sense of community anger: flood risk had increased; the causes rooted in maladaptation linked to land conversion were recognised and uncontested; and injustice was palpable. But anger and resistance were muted. The paper seeks to make sense of this situation. Villagers accepted their complicity in creating the conditions for heightened flood risk through their willingness to sell their land for conversion. The disconnection between the identification of causality and the allocation of blame raises questions about how notions of environmental justice play out in places like Ban Thapma and Ban Nhonglalok, where justice and injustice do not fall equally across space and society. Understanding crop yield and water requirements in response to the future climate at the local scale is essential to develop more precise and appropriate adaptation strategies. From this perspective, repeated drought and flood events in the lower north of Thailand were investigated. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the impact of climate change on major crop yields and the water footprint (WF). Five global circulation model datasets from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), known as Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), were selected. Three future periods: near (2015-2039), mid (2040-2069), and far future (2070-2100) under SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios were used to predict the major crop yields and WF changes in the future. The precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures were projected to increase in all periods under both scenarios. Rice yields in irrigated areas were predicted to rise gradually over the three projection periods under SSP245 but decline in mid and far-future periods under SSP585. There was a predicted reduction of first and second rice crop yields by -6.0% to -17.7% under SSP585. Fortunately, those rice yields were expected to increase in the near-future period under SSP245 by 3.0% to 4.3%. Growing maize, soybean, or mung bean instead of a second rice crop will have a less negative impact on future climate change. Changing from growing rice to be planting maize twice per year and growing cassava had increased favorability in rain-fed areas. The WF changes in the future were associated with future crop yield changes; therefore, the decrease in WFs was due to an increase in crop yield and vice-versa. This study evaluates the ability of 21 Regional Climate Models (RCMs) from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) in simulating climate extremes in the fast growing Asian cities which are highly vulnerable to climate change. The three Asian cities have two different climate characteristics, namely Bangkok and its vicinity and Ho Chi Minh City in tropical climate region and Kathmandu in sub-tropical and temperate climate region. The RCMs were evaluated to simulate the six climate indices; Consecutive Dry Days (CDD), Simple Daily Intensity Index (SDII), Number of extremely heavy precipitation days (R50mm), Maximum 1-day precipitation amount (RX1day), Mean of daily maximum temperature (TX mean) and Mean of daily minimum temperature (TN mean). The performance indicators used were correlation coefficient, normalized root mean square deviation, absolute normalized root mean square deviation and average absolute relative deviation. The Entropy method was endorsed to acquire weights of these four indicators and weightage average techniques were used for ranking of 21 RCMs. The result demonstrated that the best model for one climate index is not the same best model for other climate indices. The 3 RCMs; WAS44_SMHI_RCA4_IPSL_CM5A_MR, WAS44_SMHI_RCA4_MIROC5, and WAS44_IITM_REGCM4-4_CSIRO_MK3-6-0 are the best performing RCMs for simulating future climate extremes in Bangkok and its vicinity, Ho Chi Minh city and Kathmandu valley, respectively. Climate change-induced floods in tropical urban areas have presented a serious global challenge because of failed conventional stormwater management practices. This research aims to develop a comprehensive methodological framework for flood damage estimation and mitigation, particularly in a tropical urban city. In this study, interdisciplinary fields were integrated through statistical downscaling, hydrologic-hydraulic modeling, and the development of flood damage curves. Relationships between tangible flood damage and flood-borne outbreak with flood depths were elucidated to predict future damage. Various flood mitigation strategies were evaluated. Herein, Hat Yai Municipality in Southern Thailand was selected as the study area. The flood simulation was conducted for 2010 and the highest flood damage sensitivity was exhibited by non-commercial buildings due to significant commercial stock damage, which was followed by that observed for detached houses. There was a strong linear relationship between the number of patients infected with leptospirosis and flood depth (R 2 = 0.85). For climate change studies, flood maps for storms with 20-, 50-, and 100-year return periods under the A2/RCP8.5 scenario were generated using hydrological-hydraulic 1D/2D model; these maps were applied with the developed flood damage curves for damage estimation. It was found that reducing flood damage by implementing agroforestry and expanding the main bypass channel provides comparable damage reductions of -25.5% and - 27.5%, respectively, under the worst-case scenario of a 100-year return period in 2040-2059. Therefore, to deal with uncertain climate change situations, the incorporation of structural and non-structural measures is recommended. Such a combination when coupled with an eight-hour flood awareness time can result in a damage reduction of -59.9%. To avoid the potential adverse impacts of climate change from global warming, it is suggested that the target of net zero emissions should be reached by this mid-century. Thailand is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Since electricity generation is one of the largest producers of carbon dioxide emission, the associated emissions must be greatly reduced to achieve the targets mentioned above. Thus, new generation expansion plans must be well developed. This paper discusses the development of generation expansion plans considering Thailand's latest policies along with enhancement of the existing multi-period linear programming model, allowing new electricity generation technologies having low emissions, e.g., solar PV with battery and hydrogen blending in natural gas, to be integrated into generation expansion planning. Then, four generation expansion plans with different levels of hydrogen blending in natural gas are proposed and discussed. It is found that Thailand can achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 by promoting more use of renewable energy altogether with trade-off between land for solar PV installation and amount of hydrogen blended in natural gas. The lesson learned from this study provides crucial information about possible pathways to achieve carbon neutrality in the electricity sector for policy makers in other countries. Air pollution is considered one of the greatest environmental threats to human health in our era. This study aimed to evaluate the linkages between related research and studies on air quality management and the global sustainable development goals (SDGs) and to investigate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of air quality management strategies in Thailand. By employing the Scale Assessment Method, the results found that SDGs related to human well-being, cities, and climate change were associated with several studies with medium to high level of agreement and evidence. In accordance with SDG 3, many scholars have been performed to investigate the relationship between both long-term and short-term exposure of air pollution and human health. In SDG 11, many cities are increasing concerned about air pollution, especially the annual mean of particulate matter in cities. Regarding SDG 13, although there is no specific headline goal on air pollution and climate change, there are some research papers available on the development of combined climate change and air quality database in Thailand. In terms of SWOT analysis, availability of research database on multi-pollutant models and research prioritization on air pollution topics were identified as key strengths. Lack of integration of air pollution and cross-cutting issues were defined as major weakness. Impacts of COVID-19 on the research direction and budget allocation were categorized as threats in driving air quality management and research development. Rainfall fluctuation is directly affected by the Earth's climate change. It can be described using the coefficient of variation (CV). Similarly, the ratio of CVs can be used to compare the rainfall variation between two regions. The ratio of CVs has been widely used in statistical inference in a number of applications. Meanwhile, the confidence interval constructed with this statistic is also of interest. In this paper, confidence intervals for the ratio of two independent CVs of lognormal distributions with excess zeros using the fiducial generalized confidence interval (FGCI), Bayesian methods based on the left-invariant Jeffreys, Jeffreys rule, and uniform priors, and the Wald and Fieller log-likelihood methods are proposed. The results of a simulation study reveal that the highest posterior density (HPD) Bayesian using the Jeffreys rule prior method performed the best in terms of the coverage probability and the average length for almost all cases of small sample size and a large sample size together with a large variance and a small proportion of non-zero values. This paper examines the effect of climate change and financial development on agricultural production in ASEAN-4, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand from 1990 to 2016. Further, we explore the role of renewable energy, institutional quality, and human capital on agricultural production. Since the shocks in one country affect another country, we use second-generation modeling techniques to find out the relationship among the variables. The Westerlund (2007) cointegration tests confirm long-run relationship among the variables. The results from cross-sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) model reveal that climate change negatively affects agricultural production; on the other hand, renewable energy, human capital, and institutional quality affect positively agricultural production. Moreover, renewable energy utilization, human capital, and intuitional quality moderates the effect of carbon emission on agricultural production. In addition, a U-shaped relationship exists between financial development and agricultural production, suggesting that financial development improves agricultural production only after reaching a certain threshold. Hence, this study suggests that ASEAN-4 countries must adopt flexible financial and agricultural policies so that farmers would be benefitted and agricultural production can be increased. Thailand's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) aims to reduce 20 to 25% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with respect to the projected reference level of NDC in 2030, respectively, in its unconditional and conditional scenarios. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C would require net zero carbon dioxide emissions globally by around 2050. Thailand's current energy system is highly fossil fuel dependent and requires enormous transformations to achieve more stringent GHG emission reduction targets beyond its NDC. This paper seeks to estimate the level and the intensities of Thailand's energy system and their economy-wide effects post-2030 under the business as usual and 16 GHG emission reduction scenarios ranging from 30 to 100% by 2050. A computable general equilibrium analysis using the AIM/Hub model is employed to estimate the macroeconomic impacts of meeting the unconditional and conditional emission reductions of Thailand's NDC in 2030 along with varying GHG emission reductions in 2050. Results show that renewables – constituting solar, wind, biomass and hydro and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies account for more than 95% in the power generation mix by 2050, if 100% GHG emission reduction from the 2010 level is to be achieved. Electricity generation based on biomass both with and without CCS will occupy a major share in the investments by 2050 in all the conditional and unconditional NDC scenarios. A rapid increase in carbon sequestration occurs from 2040 onwards through the deployment of CCS and bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) technologies in all the conditional and unconditional NDC scenarios. Carbon prices lie in the range of 3.4–266.2 US$/tCO2eq during 2025–2050 to achieve 100% GHG emission reductions in 2050. Imposition of early stringent mitigation target lowers the carbon prices in the conditional scenarios towards 2050 when compared to the unconditional scenarios. The rapid uptake of CCS, energy efficiency improvements and electrification of the end-use technologies are identified to be the key measures to transform the energy system of Thailand. By 2050, the Thai economy would face a higher fall in both the GDP and household consumption in the unconditional scenarios than those in the conditional scenarios at all levels of GHG emission reduction. Results indicate that early mitigation efforts can be less costly than the delayed ones in the long-term. The cumulative investment needed to achieve decarbonization in Thailand is estimated to exceed 355 billion US$2005 over the period 2010–2050 in the 100% GHG reduction scenarios. The transmission and distribution investments in the power sector need to increase by 30–35% to attain 100% GHG emission reductions during 2010–2050. This paper focused on regional climate change impacts on hydro-meteorological variables in the Upper Chao Phraya River basin located in northern Thailand. The five global climate models were used with a number of 15 experiments to assess near future water resources over the period 2026-2040. The impacts of climate change were quantified in percentages relative to a retrospective period (1986- 2000). On average, the surface temperature tends to increase by 1.45, 1.48, and 1.80 °C under the lowest (RCP2.6), intermediate (RCP4.5), and highest (RCP8.5) CMIP5 greenhouse gas emission scenarios, respectively. Mathematical model called H08 was used, the coupling of three modules did a very good job on mimicking river discharge with high Nash-Sutcliffe and Index of Agreement. The projections of rainfall and its response to surface runoff and groundwater recharge exhibit relatively uneven distributions. The upper basin tends to face extremely heavy rainfall and taking place of serious flood, while the lower areas are expected to cope with drought. Based upon ensemble averages over the entire area, relative changes of -1.7% (-6.4%), -0.1% (-5.2%), and -2.0% (-9.3%) in the mean annual rainfall (groundwater recharge) are shown under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. This study included a groundwater recharge assessment indicating potential available groundwater use, which is considered to be a key resource for climate change adaptation. Based on these findings, implementing such an artificial groundwater recharge system is needed in order to harvest surplus water and making for coping with water stress in the dry season. A comprehensive assessment of climate change vulnerability is imperative for formulating effective adaptation strategies and advancing sustainable development goals. As one of the most climate-vulnerable regions globally, the Pan-Third Pole area lacks transnational vulnerability assessments, which poses a significant obstacle to efficient climate adaptation. This study conducted transnational comparisons based on primary micro-survey data collected uniformly across Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, which are all located in the Pan-Third Pole region. Evaluating and comparing the vulnerabilities employed an extended framework of climate change indicators. The findings reveal substantial variations in vulnerability among the countries, with Cambodia exhibiting the highest vulnerability, followed by Thailand, Myanmar, and Nepal in descending order, primarily due to differences in exposure. Household exposure to climate change also varied significantly. Sensitivity scores decreased in the order of Nepal > Cambodia > Thailand > Myanmar, with demographic factors, tap water accessibility, and land being the major contributors and sources of differentiation among the countries. Regarding adaptability, Thailand demonstrated the highest adaptability, with human and financial capital as the key differentiators. The outcomes underscore the need for tailored policy measures addressing the diverse vulnerabilities, including enhancing household disaster prevention and capital protection. The Indo-Pacific, a vast biogeographic of Earth, is influenced by both the Indian and East Asian monsoons. Despite its geographical importance, this region has been less studied compared to East Asia and India. Here, we present speleothem records from southern Thailand that cover the last 1500 years, including a hiatus during the Little Ice Age, providing insights into the interactions among climate dynamics, human influences, and ecological responses to climate change. Notably, our records lack the characteristic cold and warm periods observed in other regions, such as the Dark Ages Cold Period and Medieval Warm Period, which may reflect the complexity of the tropical climate system or the region's unique topography. The analysis reveals a link between ENSO multi-decadal variability and hydroclimate conditions in southern Thailand, as evidenced by speleothem δ18O. Furthermore, a comparison between speleothem δ13C and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) indicates significant vegetation changes in the last three decades, corresponding with increased atmospheric CO2 levels and expansion of agricultural land due to human activities during the Current Warm Period. Additionally, our study suggests that an abrupt increase in sea surface temperatures may enhance vegetation growth in the Indo-Pacific by influencing atmospheric circulation and increasing precipitation. The sustainability of Indigenous Socioecological Systems (ISES) largely depends on well-crafted policy regulations. In particular, Indigenous traditional food systems (ITFS) are an essential component of ISES that provide a variety of culturally accepted, healthy foods while also playing an important role in cultural, spiritual, and economic value to the Indigenous people (IP). Thus, sustainably managing these traditional natural resources must be a priority. As custodians of much of the world's ecological system, IP have, for generations, exhibited sustainable lifestyles in governing these systems. However, Indigenous perspectives and voices have not been properly reflected in the ISES sustainability discourse, and few comparative case studies have addressed this issue. This study contributes to fill this research gap using a desktop research method based on the Political Ecological Theoretical Framework (PETF) to examine how existing regulatory policies may affect the resilience and sustainability of ISES-ITFS, especially in relation to growing environmental and climatic pressures. Two Indigenous communities, the Karen in Thailand and different Indigenous groups in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia, are examined as case studies. Our study provides crucial insight that should help the development of robust policy interventions that integrate Indigenous concerns into policies and regulations, emphasizing self-determination, cultural preservation, and land rights. The findings emphasize the necessity for comprehensive legal frameworks prioritizing Indigenous involvement and concerns in climate and sustainability policy implementations. This study evaluated the impacts of climate change on hydro-meteorological droughts in the Chao Phraya River Basin (CPRB), Thailand under two Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). We used three Reginal Climate Models (RCMs) of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling/Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment—Southeast Asia (SEACLID/CORDEX-SEA), which are bias corrected. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate streamflow for future periods. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) were estimated and used for drought characterization at three time scales (3, 6, and 12 months). The lag time between meteorological and hydrological droughts is approximately 1–3 months. The results suggest that the CPRB is likely to experience less frequent hydro-meteorological drought events in the future. The meteorological drought is projected to be longer, more severe, and intense. The severity of hydrological drought tends to decrease, but the intensity could increase. Climate change has been discovered to alter drought behaviors in the CPRB, posing a threat to drought monitoring and warning because droughts will be less predictable in future climate scenarios. Coastal erosion in the changing climate situation is a grievous concern. Global experience varies in this regard due to the variation of the coastal dynamics. Muddy coasts are exceptionally fragile for the welding of the ecological environment, soft sedimentation nature, anthropogenic and natural factors. Therefore, coastal erosion protection is a challenging and daunting task for most of the muddy coasts. Stark pitfalls of the hard structural engineering solution for coastal erosion protection are becoming more prominent. The propensity to adopt nature-based solutions (NbS) for coastal erosion protection, squeeze, and retreat is on the mark, as opposed to grey or engineering solutions. Yet a comprehensive understanding of NbS for coastal protection in the muddy coasts and evidence building from a global perspective is a vacuum. This paper aims to look into the global contexts and experiences of NbSs for coastal protection to provide a cutting-edge analysis of the role of NbS in coastal erosion protection, biodiversity protection, renewing natural habitats, and shielding coastal populations in a changing climate situation. This research uses a systematic review method to explore the global to regional landscape of NbS in coastal erosion, policy framework, and the national experience. The plethora of NbS experience shows the effectiveness in protecting eroding coasts if properly applied in the right conditions under a pragmatic and/or policy-governance approach. Muddy coast in the peri-urban area of littoral countries like Thailand evolves even more critical bio-spheric condition that requires special and urgent attention. The important source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is identified to be energy usage, which the demand is gradually increasing. Currently, many people are exposed to increasing temperatures, which affects to health, environment, and quality of life. Moreover, there are many worries about its continuously increasing trend. This work is interested in studying the association between the annual CO2 emission and the annual mean temperature in Thailand. At a confidence interval of 90%, a statistically significant association between the annual CO2 emission and the annual mean temperature was observed. The appropriate predictive equation represented that the CO2 emission at 0.481 M ton increased the annual mean temperature by about 1°C. The results are useful for planning the reduction of CO2 emissions in Thailand. Fascinatingly, the largest source comes from electricity production, and the most significant energy type is finished oil. Therefore, they should be controlled as the priority. Simple Summary: Mecoptera, commonly known as scorpionflies and hangingflies, are an interesting, but small, and rarely-observed order of moderately-sized insects, with at least 22 species in Thailand. These insects typically prefer cool, moist mature forested habitats with broken sunlight, often on low vegetation bordering small mountain streams. They are poor fliers thus limiting their ability to disperse. For these reasons, they serve as a valuable bioindicator for monitoring changes in climatic and forest communities. However, no ecological study has previously been conducted for this insect group. This study exploits data from Project Tiger, where specimens were collected using Malaise and pan traps from 18 national parks across Thailand to characterize the biodiversity of Mecoptera with a focus on the influences of elevational and climatic factors. We found 21 species in total with 52% of them being specific to particular regions. Negative correlations between species richness and abundance of Mecoptera with both elevation and temperature were observed, suggesting a predominance of species in mid-altitude areas with a peak in the rainy season (21 species) followed by the hot (10 species) and cold (7 species) seasons. We suggest that the narrow distribution and preference for mid-altitude make Mecoptera particularly vulnerable to global warming, raising urgent conservation concerns. Ecological analyses of the small and lesser-known insect order Mecoptera in Thailand are presented. Specimens were collected monthly over a period of 12 consecutive months, using both Malaise and pan traps, from 29 sampling sites located in 18 national parks throughout Thailand. A total of 21 species in four genera were identified from 797 specimens, including Panorpa (1 species), Neopanorpa (18 species), Bittacus (1 species), and Terrobittacus (1 species), with the latter genus representing a new genus record to Thailand. Neopanorpa harmandi, N. siamensis, N. byersi, and N. malaisei were the most abundant species, representing 27.4%, 11.3%, 10.3% and 8.8% of the total specimens, respectively. The species with the highest frequency, as indicated by the high percentage of species occurrence (%SO), was N. siamensis (51%), followed by N. byersi (34%), N. harmandi (34%), N. spatulata (27%), and N. inchoata (27%). Eleven species (52%) exhibited specific regional occurrences. N. tuberosa and N. siamensis had the widest distribution, being found in almost all regions except for western and southern regions for the first and second species, respectively. The seasonal species richness of Mecoptera was high during the rainy season in the northern, northeastern, central, eastern, and western regions, with the highest richness observed in July (15 species), followed by the hot (10 species) and cold seasons (7 species), while there was no significant difference in species richness between seasons in the southern region. Multiple regression models revealed a negative association between species richness and abundance of Mecoptera with both elevation and temperature, and a positive association between rainfall and species evenness. It is predicted that climatic changes will have a detrimental effect on the mecopteran community. The results of this study enhance the understanding of the ecological aspects of Mecoptera, offering crucial insights into its biodiversity and distribution, which are vital for conservation and forest management. With roughly 63 percent of the country’s agricultural area allocated for rice farming, rice has long been a key food staple and export crop for Thailand. As with other crops, rice is heavily dependent on water, whether it is from precipitation or irrigation, and is also sensitive to changing temperatures. The impacts of droughts and floods on rice farming are a fundamental source of concern for Thai farmers and the government. This article focuses on the effects of droughts and floods on rice quality and quantity, as well as on farmers’ rice income and prospects for livelihood diversification. Based on our interviews with rice farmers in Uthaithani, Chainat, and Ayutthaya, droughts and floods diminish rice yields and increase incidences of crop failures, both partial and complete. They also lower the quality of rice and further depress net head rice yields by altering rice grain dimensions and moisture levels, as well as increasing the amount of cracked and immature grains. These outcomes contribute to a significant decline in farmers’ earnings and investment losses in the case of crop failures. Reduced access to government subsidies together with increased input costs due to droughts and floods are also crucial factors decreasing farmers’ earnings. Off-farm and on-farm livelihood diversification becomes an inevitable survival strategy for many rice-farming households to manage weather related challenges, stabilize their income, and smooth consumption. Our findings point out the need to bolster on-farm adaption capacities of rice farmers at the household, provincial, and national levels to ensure domestic and global rice security and ameliorate dangers to Thai farmers’ livelihood and well-being. Groundwater vulnerability has gained widespread attention, particularly in Chiang Mai Province, one of Thailand's fastest-growing cities, which is experiencing rapid development in both economic and social sectors. The expansion of urban communities and the industrial, tourism, and agriculture sectors has resulted in the overutilization of available resources, notably water resources. This overuse, coupled with the adoption of modern technology to boost productivity and meet market demands, has led to an increased reliance on groundwater to supplement surface water sources, providing benefits across all sectors. However, the economic and social growth plays a pivotal role in shaping the diversity of land use, encompassing residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural activities. These activities, in turn, directly contribute to environmental pollution, particularly in terms of the risk of groundwater contamination in Chiang Mai Province. This study aims to predict the future vulnerabilities of groundwater resources under an ensemble of climate change scenarios and changes in land-use patterns. Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand is one of the fastest-growing cities and therefore is experiencing rapid urbanization, as well as land-use pattern changes, which was important for the case study. The new DRASTIC model, namely the DRASTIC-LP model, combined with GIS-based techniques and overlay techniques, was used to generate the map of groundwater resource vulnerabilities. A point pollution source (P)-related land-use pattern (L) that represents contamination impacts was considered an additional new DRASTIC parameter. The study's findings reveal the high reliability and maximum effectiveness of the new DRASTIC-LP model in assessing groundwater vulnerability and contamination-risk areas under a climate change scenario (by MIROC-ESM-CHEM model under RCP.8.5 scenario) and land-use pattern changes (by CA_Markov Chian Model) for both the current year (2020) and the next 50-year period (2021–2070). Furthermore, the new DRASTIC-LP model is employed to trace the movement of pollutants from high- to very high-risk areas based on the groundwater vulnerability and contamination-risk maps. The results highlight that waste disposal dumping sites pose a more critical distribution and movement of pollutants when compared to industrial sites. Additionally, unconsolidated aquifers and cracked consolidated rock aquifers show a potentially higher occurrence of pollutant distribution and movement when compared to consolidated aquifers. Consequently, the study's outcomes are applied to formulate guidelines for the management and control of groundwater resource contamination. Slow-onset climate events (SOCEs) cause substantial impacts on human and natural systems, but research on exploring SOCEs and their effects is still limited. Therefore, changes of SOCEs in Thailand were statistically analysed based on a set of data including projected mean temperature, gridded altimetry sea level, salinity, and areal forest cover. Related information from available studies and reports was also compiled to complement our analysis. The important observed changes of SOCEs included (i) Thailand's mean temperature gradually rising towards the end of the 21st century, (ii) steady sea level rise accompanied by concomitant seawater intrusion, (iii) increasing areas of land degraded and affected by desertification, (iv) general decline in total forest cover with forest fires tending to increase over recent years, and (v) various plant and vertebrate species under multi-threats with most of them projected to considerably decline due to future climate change. Changes of SOCEs seem to have broad-ranging impacts on ecosystems and the well-being and health of Thai people. This study presented additional evidence and knowledge, responding well to the urgent needs to address SOCES in developing countries. Digitalizing technologies are increasingly heralded by a range of powerful actors and some human rights organizations as appropriate and necessary tools for 'managing migration' and mitigating climate change. Yet, just as exclusionary and marginalizing discourses of "migration problems" serve to justify the digital surveillance of vulnerable and precariously statused people, the context of climate change, accelerating contestation over land and water, and discourses of catastrophe prove fertile ground for entrenching these practices and technologies in multiple ways. Researchers are identifying the dispossessive power of digitalization in the arena of personal identification and in relation to resource and land mapping, yet these dynamics are rarely interrogated in connection. In this comparative analysis, we draw from sustained ethnographic engagement and insights in critical digitalization studies and political economy to analyze the consequences of state efforts to digitalize identity and resources in Thailand and Türkiye in the age of the Anthropocene. Our research points to a need for greater attention to the ways that state efforts to digitalize identification and registration of immigrant, refugee, and stateless people link with, and can facilitate, more efficient dispossessions and displacements of precariously statused communities from vital and contested lands. Using of Geo-Informatics and Google Earth Engine (GEE) technology provide the smart system to access the land information that is very important to achieve the country's goals on Climate change. The purpose of this research were to develop the land use change monitoring system by integration of Geo-Informatics and the GEE technology and to create the spatial GHG emissions and removals datasets in Chiang-Mai. Four periods (2019-2021) of Landsat-8 and Sentinel satellite imagery were used to interpret land use and land use changes. Main types of land use change based on amount of biomass were analyzed: forest land, cropland, grassland, wetland, settlement and others land. Cropland are divided into 4 sub-groups base on amount of biomass: rice fields, rubber, oil palm and other agriculture. Then the datasets of land use change were used to assess the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and reduction using the calculation method referring to the IPCC Good Practice Guidance for LULUCF (GPC) and 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventory. The results of the study are summarized as follows: Chiang Mai Province abundant with forest areas accounted for 69.9 % of the total area. There is a national forest national park and many wildlife sanctuaries. According to the interpretation of satellite images, it was found that Chiang Mai has continued to expand urban areas and agricultural areas. Most of the land has been transformed from abandoned grasslands. It wasn't modified from the forest area as in the past. This is due to the measures of forest preservation and reforestation. As a result, GHG emissions are reduced. The analysis results show that when deducting the emission value from the amount of greenhouse gas storage, Chiang Mai Province has GHG storage of -967,349.16 tCO2 -1,308,790.00 tCO2 -1,277,804.35 tCO2 in 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively. The results of this study are used as supporting information for the project to develop an approach to reduce GHG at the area base. This is another step forward in using geospatial technology to assess and manage carbon. This makes it possible to show the amount of GHG in the form of a map. Including the ability to identify emissions or reservoirs of GHG as well. This document is a summary of a journal article titled "Impacts of Human Activities and Climate Change on Freshwater Fish—Volume II." The article explores the threats faced by freshwater fish due to human activities and climate change, including changes in land and water use, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. It presents case studies from different regions, covering topics such as the importance of macrophytes for fish diversity, the presence of microplastics in fish gastrointestinal tracts, the effects of atrazine exposure on fish behavior, genetic and morphological variations in barbel species, heat tolerance of Thai river fish species, trophic structure of fish communities in subtropical lakes, habitat suitability of native fish species in Central Anatolia, and factors influencing fish beta diversity and size diversity. The article provides valuable insights into the impacts of human-induced changes on freshwater fish and offers potential solutions for conservation efforts. Additionally, the article discusses a study on the ecology of balitorid fish in Thailand, which found that high ammonia levels and river temperatures negatively affected the occurrence and diversity of balitorid fish, while dissolved silica had a positive influence. Climate change (CC) and land-use change (LUC) will alter a basin's hydrological processes and water balance. Quantifying their significance is imperative in formulating appropriate countermeasures and management plans. This study assesses projected changes in hydrological variables under CC and LUC scenarios to provide multi-dimensional insight into water balance relevant to an agricultural watershed in Northeast Thailand. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) is utilized to simulate hydrological variables (evapotranspiration, soil moisture, surface runoff, and water yield) for the baseline (1981–2010) and the near-future (2021–2050) after calibrating the model. CC projections considering the CMIP6 model ensemble for the high-emission scenario (SSP5-8.5) show the annual rainfall may not change significantly (0.5% increase compared to baseline). However, the surface runoff will likely increase by 33% due to the projected increase in rainfall intensity and extremes. The increase in urban areas due to LUC for the business as usual (BAU) scenario is also expected to boost surface runoff by 38–87%. Similarly, the LUC scenario with forest expansion will increase evapotranspiration by up to 1.3%. While CC is anticipated to raise water yield by 11%, LUC may reduce it by 6%. Under the combined scenario, the yield is expected to increase by 8%, indicating CC as the dominating driver. The results show that although CC governs the runoff from the basin, land-use change will also impact flows at a monthly scale. Importantly, soil moisture in the future will decrease (8–9%) under both stressors, which will reverberate in the basin's agricultural livelihood and socioeconomic settings unless the appropriate adaptation measures are implemented. The recent global expansion of dengue has been facilitated by changes in urbanisation, mobility, and climate. In this work, we project future changes in dengue incidence and case burden to 2099 under the latest climate change scenarios. We fit a statistical model to province-level monthly dengue case counts from eight countries across Southeast Asia, one of the worst affected regions. We project that dengue incidence will peak this century before declining to lower levels with large variations between and within countries. Our findings reveal that northern Thailand and Cambodia will show the biggest decreases and equatorial areas will show the biggest increases. The impact of climate change will be counterbalanced by income growth, with population growth having the biggest influence on increasing burden. These findings can be used for formulating mitigation and adaptation interventions to reduce the immediate growing impact of dengue virus in the region. Climate change and other factors are expected to further drive global dengue spread. This study projects changes in future dengue incidence in Southeast Asia up to 2099, predicting a peak this century. His work on large spatial and temporal scale landscape evolution is well known, but he also (and coevally) directed his attention to the complexities of human–environmental interactions, with all their site-based and short-term cultural idiosyncrasies. His focus on mainland SE Asia, and Thailand in particular, reflects a long-standing fascination in and affection for the region and its people. His natural inquisitiveness stimulated work in historic climate change, the emergence of complex states, Quaternary landscape evolution and the geochronology of anthropogenically modified sediments, among many other areas. His work on human–environment interactions drew on and strengthened links with many people and institutions, and between Geographical and Earth Sciences and the Scottish Universities Research Centre at the University of Glasgow, in particular. Just as important as his contribution to the earth sciences was his contribution to the development of his students and other mentees, and his role in shaping our careers was enormous. Thailand has set the 20-year National Strategy (2018–2037) towards sustainable development and building adaptability to climate change. The strategy promotes forestation and higher bioethanol energy demand. This study aims to investigate the effects of the climate and land-use changes on water balance in 2037, the end of the National Strategy, for the Mun River Basin, NE Thailand. The simulated climate dataset used in this study was ensemble means from IPCC AR5 Global Circulation Models for representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 climate scenarios. The land-use change was simulated using the Dyna-CLUE (Conversion of Land Use and its Effects) model. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to assess the water balance (considering evapotranspiration—ET, percolation—PERC, surface runoff—SURQ, and groundwater lateral flow—LATQ). The combined effects could increase monthly ET, whereas the climate change effect could outrun the land-use changes, resulting in increasing PERC. The sustainable development under the National Strategy (2018–2037) could be insignificantly affecting the water balance, whereas the "Bioethanol-Oriented" land-use scenario could increase SURQ and decline LATQ, which could intensify flooding. Bruguiera gymnorhiza (L.) Savigny is one of the most important and widespread mangrove species in the Indo-West Pacific region. Here, the population structure and genetic diversity of B. gymnorhiza along the coastlines of Thailand were examined. A total of 73 B. gymnorhiza accessions in 15 provinces were sequenced using RAD-seq to generate their SNPs. Based on the high-quality SNPs, the topology of the maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree clearly presented two genetically distinct groups corresponding to two geographic regions, the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea coasts. The results for the population structure provided by STRUCTURE and PCA also showed two main genetic clusters and their genetic admixture. A moderate genetic diversity was observed among the accessions, with average observed and expected heterozygosity values of 0.397 and 0.317, respectively. A high genetic differentiation (FST = 0.16, p < 0.001) between the two subpopulations was significantly found. An analysis of molecular variance revealed 83.95% of the genetic variation within populations and 16.05% of the genetic variation among populations. A high genetic variation within the populations and admixture may facilitate adaptation to local environments and climate changes. These results provide important information on the population genetic structure and genetic diversity of B. gymnorhiza in Thailand for further mangrove management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non‐stationarity in heavy rainfall time series is often apparent in the form of trends because of long‐term climate changes. We have built non‐stationary (NS) models for annual maximum daily (AMP1) and 2‐day precipitation (AMP2) data observed between 1984 and 2020 years by 71 stations and between 1960 and 2020 by eight stations over Thailand. The generalized extreme value (GEV) models are used. Totally, 16 time‐dependent functions of the location and scale parameters of the GEV model are considered. On each station, a model is selected by using Bayesian and Akaike information criteria among these candidates. The return levels corresponding to some years are calculated and predicted for the future. The stations with the highest return levels are Trad, Samui, and Narathiwat, for both AMP1 and AMP2 data. We found some evidence of increasing (decreasing) trends in maximum precipitation for 22 (10) stations in Thailand, based on NS GEV models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change includes global warming, but it also refers to a larger spectrum of changes occurring in our world. The tourism industry is exceptionally sensitive to climate change. Therefore, sustainable tourism seeks to negotiate balanced growth for the economic, sociocultural, and environmental aspects of tourism. The study aims to close a theoretical gap in the literature by critically exploring how small tourism and leisure businesses perceive the concept of sustainable tourism in Phuket, Thailand. This mixed-methods study utilized an inductive approach to generate themes through 18 stakeholder interviews with local business owners. Moreover, these obtained results were tested quantitatively through a self-administered survey with 87 responses. The study revealed that the most significant barriers are weak governance and a lack of awareness. Furthermore, small tourism enterprises associate environmental sustainability with long-term tourism development. The "Golden Triangle" is located on the border between Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand, and slash-and-burn cultivation is an ancient and typical land type in this region. With the development of the "The Belt and Road" strategy of China and the climate change, the vegetation information is bound to change intensively under the combined influence of alternative plantation projects and economic policies. Here we used MOD13Q1-normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological data to analyze the variation of vegetation coverage and its correlation with climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) during the period of 2000–2018 by using trend analysis, stability analysis, and partial correlation analysis. The results showed that the overall vegetation coverage of this region exerted the trend of improvement and became more stable over time. Spatially, the agglomeration degree became weaker as time goes during 2000–2018. The precipitation was more closely correlated with NDVI than temperature, indicating that precipitation could be the main limiting factor influencing vegetation change in this area. The correlation between NDVI and climatic factors exhibited differences among different seasons, with NDVI being less correlated with temperature and precipitation in spring and summer and more correlated with them in autumn and winter. Investigating the long-term vegetation coverage of this region and analyzing the trend of climate change is beneficial to understand the development trend of the ecological environment and resource potential in this region. Simultaneously, it can provide a favorable ecological evaluation for The Belt and Road strategy and provide important scientific suggestions and guidance for the sustainable development of ecosystems and human society under the drastic environmental changes. To narrow the gap of agricultural water insufficiency in the Lam Takong River Basin, Thailand, we conducted an assessment of water availability and agricultural water demand under climate and land use changes. The water availability was estimated by SWAT, which was calibrated and validated during 2008–2012 and 2013–2018 against the observed daily discharge at the M.164 station. Measured and simulated discharges showed good agreement during calibration and validation, as indicated by values of 0.75 and 0.69 for R2 and 0.74 and 0.63 for Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency, respectively. The results of GCMs (IPSL-CM5-MR, NorESM1-M, and CanESM2) under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 were calculated to investigate changes in rainfall and temperature during 2020–2099. The warming tendencies of future maximum and minimum temperatures were projected as 0.018 and 0.022 °C/year and 0.038 and 0.045 °C/year under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. The future rainfall was found to increase by 0.34 and 1.06 mm/year under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. As compared to the 2017 baseline, the future planted areas of rice, maize, and cassava were projected to decrease during 2020–2099, while the sugarcane plantation area was expected to increase until 2079 and then decline. The top three greatest increases in future land use area were identified as residential and built-up land (in 2099), water bodies (in 2099), and other agricultural land (in 2059), while the three largest decrease rates were paddy fields (in 2099), forest land (in 2099), and orchards (during 2059–2079). Under the increased reservoir storage and future climate and land use changes, the maximum and minimum increases in annual discharge were 1.4 (RCP 8.5) and 0.1 million m3 (RCP 4.5) during 2060–2079. The sugarcane water demand calculated by CROPWAT was solely projected to increase from baseline to 2099 under RCP 4.5, while the increase for sugarcane and cassava was found for RCP 8.5. The future unmet water demand was found to increase under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, and the highest deficits would take place in June and March during 2020–2039 and 2040–2099, respectively. In this context, it is remarkable that the obtained results are able to capture the continued and growing imbalance between water supply and agricultural demand exacerbated by future climatic and anthropogenic land use changes. This research contributes new insight for compiling a comprehensive set of actions to effectively build resilience and ensure future water sufficiency in the Lam Takong River Basin. Background and Objective: Invasive thrips, Thrips parvispinus Karny recently reported in India, causing a widespread severe infestation in more than 0.4 million ha of chilli (Capsicum annum L.) growing areas. This species is native to Thailand and most prevalent in other South East Asian countries. Large scale cultivation of the major host plants (chilli and papaya), and favourable climatic conditions in India and other countries similar to native range of Thrips parvispinus expected to favour its further spread and establishment to new areas. Materials and Methods: The present study was undertaken to confirm invasive thrips species identity through both morphological and molecular approaches and predict its potential invasion using the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm. Results: The model predicted species range in respect of discrimination of suitable and unsuitable areas for its occurrence both in current and future climatic scenarios. The model provided a good fit for species distribution with a high value of area under the curve (0.957). The jackknife test indicated annual mean temperature and precipitation were found to be the most important bioclimatic variable in determining the distribution of T. parvispinus. High suitability areas were predicted in the countries wherever its occurrence was reported with high discrimination ability of suitable and unsuitable areas. Key distinguishing morphological characters of T. parvispinus were illustrated through high-resolution scanning electron microscopic images. Conclusion: The identity of the thrips causing wide spread damage in chilli confirmed through morphological and molecular approaches. Key identifying characters were described through high resolution scanning electron microscopic images for accurate identification of the species. MaxEnt model identified high suitability regions for the potential establishment of T. parvispinus in India and other parts of the world. This study facilitates forecasting of further spread and also suggests imposing strict domestic quarantine measures to curtail its establishment in the new areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Species of Paramyrothecium that are reported as plant pathogens and cause leaf spot or leaf blight have been reported on many commercial crops worldwide. In 2019, during a survey of fungi causing leaf spots on plants in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son provinces, northern Thailand, 16 isolates from 14 host species across nine plant families were collected. A new species Paramyrothecium vignicola sp. nov. was identified based on morphology and concatenated (ITS, cmdA, rpb2, and tub2) phylogeny. Further, P. breviseta and P. foliicola represented novel geographic records to Thailand, while P. eichhorniae represented a novel host record (Psophocarpus sp., Centrosema sp., Aristolochia sp.). These species were confirmed to be the causal agents of the leaf spot disease through pathogenicity assay. Furthermore, cross pathogenicity tests on Coffea arabica L., Commelina benghalensis L., Glycine max (L.) Merr., and Dieffenbachia seguine (Jacq.) Schott revealed multiple host ranges for these pathogens. Further research is required into the host–pathogen relationship of Paramyrothecium species that cause leaf spot and their management. Biotic and abiotic stresses caused by climate change may affect plant health and disease susceptibility. Hence, proper identification and monitoring of fungal communities in the environment are important to understand emerging diseases and for implementation of disease management strategies. The draft post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework asks CBD parties to conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030 'through a well-connected and effective system of protected areas ... with the focus on areas particularly important for biodiversity'. We use Thailand as a case study for the ability of a densely populated, hyper diverse, tropical, middle-income country to meet this target at a national level. Existing protected areas (PAs) total 24.3% of Thailand's land area. Adding forest on government land adjacent to existing PAs, plus unprotected areas of Ramsar sites, raises this to 29.5%. To assess the importance for biodiversity, we used modeled distributions of birds and mammals plus, as proxies for other biodiversity components, elevation, bioclimate, forest type, and WWF ecoregion. All modeled species occur in the current PA system but <30% meet representation targets. Expansion of the system increases the proportion of mammals and birds adequately protected and increases the protection for underrepresented bioclimatic zones and forest types. The expanded system remains fragmented and underrepresents key habitats, but opportunities for increasing protection of these are limited. It is also still vulnerable to climate change, although projected impacts are reduced. Additional protection is needed for wetland and coastal habitats, and limestone karsts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The four-parameter kappa distribution (K4D) is a generalized form of some commonly used distributions such as generalized logistic, generalized Pareto, generalized Gumbel, and generalized extreme value (GEV) distributions. Owing to its flexibility, the K4D is widely applied in modeling in several fields such as hydrology and climatic change. For the estimation of the four parameters, the maximum likelihood approach and the method of L-moments are usually employed. The L-moment estimator (LME) method works well for some parameter spaces, with up to a moderate sample size, but it is sometimes not feasible in terms of computing the appropriate estimates. Meanwhile, using the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) with small sample sizes shows substantially poor performance in terms of a large variance of the estimator. We therefore propose a maximum penalized likelihood estimation (MPLE) of K4D by adjusting the existing penalty functions that restrict the parameter space. Eighteen combinations of penalties for two shape parameters are considered and compared. The MPLE retains modeling flexibility and large sample optimality while also improving on small sample properties. The properties of the proposed estimator are verified through a Monte Carlo simulation, and an application case is demonstrated taking Thailand's annual maximum temperature data. Although 23% of Thailand's land is in protected areas, these are vulnerable to climate change. We used spatial distribution modelling for 866 vertebrate and 591 plant species to understand potential climate change impacts on species in protected areas. Most mammals, birds, and plants were projected to decline by 2070, but most amphibians and reptiles were projected to increase. By 2070 under RCP8.5, 54% of modeled species will be threatened and 11 nationally extinct. However, SDMs are sensitive to truncation of the climate space currently occupied by habitat loss and hunting, and apparent truncation by data limitations. In Thailand, lowland forest clearance has biased records for forest-dependent species to cooler uplands (> 250 m a.s.l.) and hunting has confined larger vertebrates to well-protected areas. In contrast, available data is biased towards lowland non-forest taxa for amphibians and reptiles. Niche truncation may therefore have resulted in overestimation of vulnerability for some mammal and plant species, while data limitations have likely led to underestimation of the threat to forest-dependent amphibians and reptiles. In view of the certainty of climate change but the many uncertainties regarding biological responses, we recommend regular, long-term monitoring of species and communities to detect early signals of climate change impacts. Indigenous upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important staple food for people. The productivity of upland rice is generally lower than lowland rice since crop yield depends on the amount of rainfall. Climate change is a major problem in rice production due to the unpredictable rainfall. The flowering time, maturity days, growth duration, and photoperiod sensitivity in rice are important for determining productivity. Therefore, in this study, indigenous upland rice germplasm was classified according to their flowering-related traits in the basic vegetative phase (BVP), photoperiod sensitivity index (PSI), grain yield (GY), and yield components. The results reveal that the BVP ranges from 12 to 76 days (mainly less than 30 days) while the PSI ranges from −0.14 to 0.89. Classification of the three groups was based on the PSI: 24 insensitivities (G1; PSI = −0.14–0.30), 214 weakly sensitive (G2; PSI = 0.31–0.70), and 63 strongly sensitive (G3; PSI = 0.71–0.89). Grain yield showed different correlations with day to flowering (DTF), PSI, and BVP in each group. The results suggest that the selection criteria were not only based on GY and DTF but also PSI and BVP. The new ideotypes for upland rice selection under unpredictable conditions such as rainfall and light duration are weakly sensitive (PSI range 0.30–0.60), low BVP (20–30 days), and less than 105 days of DTF, such as ULR189, ULR039, ULR036, ULR403, ULR364, ULR342, and ULR245 genotypes. This study provides an assessment of changes in mean and extreme climate in northeast Thailand, focusing on the near‐future period (2021–2050). Spatiotemporal changes in climate extremes and return values are investigated compared to 1981–2010. Climate model‐related uncertainties are quantified using 14 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) and 8 models from phase 6 (CMIP6). CMIP6 models have a higher sensitivity to external forcings as the CMIP6 ensemble suggests an increase in maximum and minimum temperatures by 1.45°C (0.8–1.9°C) and 1.54°C (1.1–1.9°C) under the high emission scenario, which is greater than by CMIP5 ensemble: 1.10°C (0.5–1.7°C) and 1.13°C (0.7–1.6°C), respectively. No significant changes in annual rainfall are projected, although it will be temporally more uneven with decreases (6–11%) during the pre‐rainy season (March–May) and increases (2–8%) during the rainy season (June–October). The bootstrap analysis technique shows the inter‐model uncertainties for rainfall projections in CMIP6 have reduced by 40% compared to CMIP5. The annual number of hot days will increase more than twofold and warm nights, more than threefold. Near‐future will experience an increase in the rainfall intensity, a decrease in the number of rainy days, and an increase in the 20‐year return values of annual maximum 1‐day rainfall and consecutive 5‐days rainfall (>30%). In addition, the rainy season will be shortened in the future as onset and retreat are delayed, which may have implications in agricultural activities in the basin since cultivation is primarily rainfed. These findings suggest that anthropogenic activities will significantly amplify the climate extremes. This paper outlines an integrative process for community-based adaptation plans to sea-level rise (SLR) effects in Kohklang Sub-district, Thailand. Three objectives guide this research: (1) to identify flood prone areas and develop a coastal vulnerability index (CVI) (e.g., to estimate ecosystem service impacts and economic loss in flood prone areas); (2) to co-develop risk profiles and social vulnerability assessment; and (3) to synthesize assessment outcomes and generate corresponding adaptation plans and recommendations. A knowledge co-production process was used to link participatory action research (PAR) on social conditions and changes with technical assessments of sea-level rise simulations at 0.5 and 1 m to identify flood prone areas and develop the CVI. Additional data collection and analyses methods include a review of literature and synthesis of expert opinion (n = 5) regarding SLR effects on estimated losses in ecosystem services and community livelihoods, semi-structured interviews (n = 50) and focus group discussions (n = 17 people). We find that a co-production process of natural and social science, together with local knowledge, provides a holistic and integrative identification of impacts of sea level rise and community-based adaptation plans and policy. Initial results were synthesized and then presented to multiple stakeholders in a Kohklang community workshop to further clarify findings and confirm insights. This research process has highlighted the significance of transdisciplinary and participatory approaches to developing household- and community-level policy and plans for adaptation to sea level rise. Outcomes of the research include practical recommendations to address vulnerability concerns, as well as a draft adaptation plan for inclusion in the strategy of the sub-district administrative authority. In March 2020, the EU announced that it should be climate neutral by 2050. In order to achieve this goal, multiple regulations will be necessary. However, this article argues that regulation will not be enough. Rather, the EU should work towards stronger partnerships and more cooperation between public and private parties. The carbon storage value of forest restoration, by the framework species method (FSM) in northern Thailand, was assessed for trees (using a partial harvesting technique) and soil and compared with restoration costs. Forest carbon accumulation amounted to 143.08 tC/ha in trees and 8.56 tC/ha in soil over 14 years, with a combined value of USD 27,173.63 (net present value (NPV), discounted at 2.85%/year)) (at the current European carbon credit (EUA) price of 55.98 EUR/tCO2 = 242.21 USD/tC). Restoration costs increased from 2190.27 to 5680.72 USD/ha with declining pre-existing natural regeneration or 3.99–10.34 USD per ton of sequestered CO2. Profits over 14 years ranged in NPV from 22,215.45 to 25,157.04 USD/ha, breaking even from just over 4 years to just under 7, respectively. In contrast, profits from maize cultivation (a major regional deforestation driver) averaged 96.25 USD/ha/year, or just 1347.53 USD/ha over 14 years. Consequently, forest restoration could become a financially attractive alternative land use, provided an open, transparent, carbon market is created. Therefore, this study supports creation of a forest-carbon trading system in Thailand, to incentivize forest restoration and fire prevention, increase farmers' incomes, reduce smoke-related public health problems, protect watersheds, and conserve biodiversity. Calcifying macroalgae contribute significantly to the structure and function of tropical marine ecosystems. Their calcification and photosynthetic processes are not well understood despite their critical role in marine carbon cycles and high vulnerability to environmental changes. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the macroalgal calcification process, focusing on its relevance concerning seawater carbonate chemistry and its relationship to photosynthesis in three dominant calcified macroalgae in Thailand, Padina boryana, Halimeda macroloba and Halimeda opuntia. Morphological and microstructural attributes of the three macroalgae were analyzed and subsequently linked to their calcification rates and responses to inhibition of photosynthesis. In the first experiment, seawater pH, total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon were measured after incubation of the macroalgae in the light and after equilibration of the seawater with air. Estimations of carbon uptake into photosynthesis and calcification and carbon release into air were obtained thereafter. Our results provide evidence that calcification of the three calcified macroalgae is a potential source of CO2, where calcification by H. opuntia and H. macroloba leads to a greater release of CO2 per biomass weight than P. boryana. Nevertheless, this capacity is expected to vary on a diurnal basis, as the second experiment indicates that calcification is highly coupled to photosynthetic activity. Lower pH as a result of inhibited photosynthesis under darkness imposes more negative effects on H. opuntia and H. macroloba than on P. boryana, implying that they are more sensitive to acidification. These effects were worsened when photosynthesis was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, highlighting the significance of photosynthetic electron transport-dependent processes. Our findings suggest that estimations of the amount of carbon stored in the vegetated marine ecosystems should account for macroalgal calcification as a potential carbon source while considering diurnal variations in photosynthesis and seawater pH in a natural setting.
