The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most important climate systems during boreal winter. It has a large meridional extent and provides a vital bridge between the mid‐to‐high latitudes and the tropics. This paper reviews the latest research on the climate variability of the EAWM, with particular emphasis on the associated processes of extratropical–tropical interaction. Some new results have been achieved in understanding the variation of the EAWM on interdecadal, interannual, and intraseasonal time scales, such as the interdecadal strengthening in the early 21st century, the unstable impact of El Niño–South Oscillation (ENSO) on the EAWM, and the intraseasonal strong cold events in East Asia. In addition, understanding of the extratropical–tropical interactions related to the EAWM has improved in several aspects, including the impacts of the EAWM on ENSO‐related climate effects, and the variation of regional Hadley circulation over the western Pacific and its climate impacts in the Asia–Australia region. Moreover, recent work has systematically evaluated the capacity of climate models to simulate the EAWM, including its climatology, interannual to interdecadal variations, and its relationship with ENSO. Precipitation plays a crucial role in the global energy and water cycle and has important implications for food, water, and energy security. To enhance our understanding of the water cycle, it is invaluable to have a comprehensive historical record of precipitation. However, obtaining such records, especially for the period before the Industrial Revolution, can be challenging. During the Joseon Dynasty, Korea established a network for measuring rainfall and recorded this information in historical documents known as Seungjeongwon Ilgi and Ilseongnok. Recently, these documents have been digitized, providing us with daily precipitation data for Seoul spanning 130 years, from 1778 to 1907. By combining and analyzing these two documents, we were able to address inconsistencies found in previous studies and improve the quality of the data. Notably, this dataset is free of any missing values, making it the longest daily precipitation record in the world before the Industrial Revolution. The use of remote sensing methods to accurately measure cloud properties and their spatiotemporal changes has been widely welcomed in many fields of atmospheric research. The Nanjing Joint Institute for Atmospheric Sciences (NJIAS) Himawari-8/9 Cloud Feature Dataset (HCFD) provides a comprehensive description of cloud features over the East Asia and west North Pacific regions for the 7-year period from April 2016 to December 2022. Multiple cloud variables, such as cloud mask, phase/type, top height, optical thickness, and particle effective radius, as well as snow, dust, and haze masks, were generated from the visible and infrared measurements of the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on board the Japanese geostationary satellites Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 using a series of recently developed cloud retrieval algorithms. Verifications with the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) 1 km cloud layer product and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level-2 cloud product (MYD06) demonstrate that the NJIAS HCFD gives higher skill scores than the Japanese Himawari-8/9 operational cloud product for all cloud variables except for cloud particle effective radius. The NJIAS HCFD even outperforms the MYD06 in nighttime cloud detection; cloud-top height, pressure, and temperature estimation; and infrared-only cloud-top phase determination. All evaluations are performed at the nominal 2 km scale, not including the effects of sub-pixel cloudiness or very thin cirrus. Two examples are presented to demonstrate applications of the NJIAS HCFD for climate and typhoon research. Atmospheric ammonia (NH 3) is a reactive nitrogen compound that pollutes our environment and threatens public health. Monitoring the spatial and temporal variations is important for quantifying its emissions and depositions and evaluating the strategies for managing anthropogenic sources of NH 3. In this study, we present an NH 3 retrieval algorithm based on the optimal estimation method for the Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) on board China's FengYun-4B satellite (FY-4B/GIIRS). In particular, we examine the information content based on the degree of freedom for signal (DOFS) in retrieving the diurnal NH 3 in East Asia, with a focus on two source regions including the North China Plain and North India. Our retrieval is based on the FengYun Geostationary satellite Atmospheric Infrared Retrieval (FY-GeoAIR) algorithm and exploits the strong NH 3 absorption window of 955–975 cm -1. Retrieval results using FY-4B/GIIRS spectra from July to December 2022 show that the DOFS for the majority ranges from 0 to 1.0, mainly depending on the thermal contrast (TC) defined as the temperature difference between the surface and the lowest atmospheric layer. Consistent with retrievals from low-Earth-orbit (LEO) infrared sounders, the detection sensitivity, as quantified by the averaging kernel (AK) matrix, peaks in the lowest 2 km atmospheric layers. The DOFS and TC are highly correlated, resulting in a typical "butterfly" shape. That is, the DOFS increases when TC becomes either more positive or more negative. The NH 3 columns from FY-4B/GIIRS exhibit significant diurnal cycles that are consistent with the day–night gradient from the collocated IASI retrievals in the North China Plain and North India for the averages in July–August, September–October, and November–December, respectively. A collocated point-by-point intercomparison with the IASI NH 3 dataset shows generally good agreement with a small systematic difference in the summer months that may be attributed to the slight difference in a priori profiles. This study demonstrates the capability of FY-4B/GIIRS in capturing the diurnal NH 3 changes in East Asia, which will have the potential to improve regional and global air quality and climate research. Strong East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) can enhance the Maritime Continent rainfall (MCR) via frequent southward penetration of cold air along the coast of East Asia. However, such impact diminished after the late‐1990s, primarily due to the weakened covariation between the Siberian high and Aleutian low (AL). During 1979–1998, the co‐variability between the Siberian high and AL facilitates a strong east‐west pressure gradient over East Asia. The resultant northerlies invade southward and facilitate the enhanced MCR. In contrast, such covariation is weak during 2000–2018, and it impedes the southward invasion of northerly winds and diminishes EAWM's impact. Further inspections indicate that the weakened covariation is primarily caused by the reduced variability of the AL. The underlying mechanism is confirmed by the historical simulation of version 6 Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC6) that participates in phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project and numerical experiments with European Center‐Hamburg atmospheric model version 6.3 (ECHAM6). During 1979–1998, the co‐variability between the SH and AL causes a strong east‐west pressure gradient over East Asia. The resultant northerly winds invade southward along the coast of East Asia and facilitate the enhanced MCR. In contrast, during 2000–2018, the covariation is weak and diminishes EAWM's impact. Further analysis indicates that it is the weakened AL variability that determines the weakening of the covariation between the SH and AL. The incident and emitted radiative energy data for the top of the atmosphere (TOA) are essential in climate research. Since East Asia (11–61°N, 80–175°E) is complexly composed of land and ocean, real-time satellite data are used importantly for analyzing the detailed energy budget or climate characteristics of this region. Therefore, in this study, the radiative energy budget for East Asia, during the year 2021, was analyzed using GEO-KOMPSAT-2A/Advanced Metrological Imager (GK-2A/AMI) and the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts reanalysis (ERA5) data. The results showed that the net fluxes for the TOA and surface were −4.09 W·m−2 and −8.24 W·m−2, respectively. Thus, the net flux difference of 4.15 W·m−2 between TOA and surface implied atmospheric warming. These results, produced by GK-2A/AMI, were well-matched with the ERA5 data. However, they varied with surface characteristics; the atmosphere over ocean areas warmed because of the large amounts of longwave radiation emitted from surfaces, while the atmosphere over the plain area was relatively balanced and the atmosphere over the mountain area was cooled because large amount of longwave radiation was emitted to space. Although the GK2A/AMI radiative products used for this study have not yet been sufficiently compared with surface observation data, and the period of data used was only one year, they were highly correlated with the CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System of USA), HIMAWARI/AHI (Geostationary Satellite of Japan), and ERA5 data. Therefore, if more GK-2A/AMI data are accumulated and analyzed, it could be used for the analysis of radiant energy budget and climate research for East Asia, and it will be an opportunity to greatly increase the utilization of total meteorological products of 52 types, including radiative products.
