This paper focuses on metacognition facilitation through digital narratives. The objectives of the study were to explore how the creation of digital narratives strengthens the formation of metacognitive skills, and which teaching practices promote awareness of learning. The process of digital narrative creation connects literacy, language, technologies, and metacognitive planning, debugging, monitoring, and assessment strategies. A metacognitive awareness inventory questionnaire was used to assess the level of metacognitive skill formation, and content analysis and descriptive statistics were employed to analyze interviews and discussions. The study involved engineering and students from three universities. Findings demonstrated improved metacognition subject to the implementation of appropriate teaching practices and the existence of an educational partnership between students and teachers. The most relevant practices were identified, and it was concluded that digital narratives may be an efficient strategy for the development of metacognitive skills including knowledge about cognition and regulation of cognition. [eng] Aging is a normal biological process characterized by a decline at molecular, brain and behavioral level with consequences on cognition and daily functioning. Lifestyle behaviors such as physical activity or stimulating brain activities might enhance neuroprotective benefits when applied single or in combination in healthy adults. Current literature also focuses on understanding the role of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in those benefits as well as better describing the cascade of changes related to exercise. Therefore, the main aims of this dissertation are: 1) To examine the role of physical activity, grouped as exercise and non-exercise, in the promotion of molecular, brain, psychological health and cognitive benefits; 2) To examine the role of cardiorespiratory fitness in the promotion of these neuroprotective benefits as well as in the exercise-cognition relationship; 3) To identify potential sex-differences in the role of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness; 4) To examine the effect of 12-weeks 5 days per week of aerobic exercise, computerized cognitive training and their combination on molecular and brain health and assess their role in the intervention-related cognitive benefits. Projecte Moviment consists of a 12 weeks 5 days randomized controlled trial, which allowed us to identify intervention-related changes in physically inactive healthy older adults as well as the role of other variables of interest. We recruited 109 participants and assessed them within 2 weeks before and after the intervention; 82 showed >80% adherence out of the 92 who finished the intervention. Moreover, we designed a cross-sectional strategy to describe the physical activity-cognition relationship in a sample that included 115 low to high fit participants. The assessment protocol included a battery of neuropsychogical and psychological health tests, physical activity questionnaries and fitness test, antropometric measures and cardiovascular risk factors, blood test, and neuroimaging. Results were reported in 3 different papers and the main findings are: 1) We specifically related sportive physical activity, and not non-sportive physical activity, to benefits on cognitive performance as well as markers of inflammation, brain volume and psychological health. 2) We determined that cardiovascular health might be a key factor in the exercise-related benefits, specifically in men. 3) We identified that sex matters in the understanding of exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness benefits. 4) Cardiorespiratory fitness-related benefits in brain volume, executive function and sleep quality in men might be mediated by inflammatory markers. 5) Although after 12-weeks of aerobic exercise and combined training we did not detect significant changes in the targeted molecular and brain volume outcomes that might explain the detected cognitive benefits, significant increases in physical activity outcomes were negatively related to changes in SDF1-α and ICAM-1 levels. 6) We identified that 12-weeks, 5 days per week of home-based multimodal computerized cognitive training enhanced the volume of the precuneus, despite the lack of transfer to our cognitive assessment.

[eng] This thesis is made up of two papers. Both of them are concerned with the “motive for altering or calling into question the attitude of the other” that Stevenson included in his characterization of disagreement. The first paper argues that Eriksson’s considerations are insufficient for drawing the conclusion that moral and taste judgments are different with respect to the presence of such a motive. The second paper offers an account of what it is to have disagreement in terms of “demanding” agreement, by developing the Stevensonian “calling into question” element.

This doctoral thesis is a compendium of published articles. It consists of two papers that address the issue of the cognitive penetrability of perception and two pieces that discuss the case of the perception/cognition distinction. All the papers are related to each other; the relationship between perception and cognition will depend on where we draw the border between them, and drawing such a border will, in turn, be decisive in finding out how they are related.

The paper deals with learning strategies and their necessity in contemporary education as a way to provide lifelong learning to medical science students. It systematizes some of the most used theoretical positions in the understanding of the subject. It aims to present a theoretical position from a complex and dialectical approach in relation to the perception of learning strategies and the way in which these positions have evolved, highlighting the role that the teacher should play to promote their development. The intention of the present work, leads to the discussion of a detected problem and, above all, raises lines of action that lead to an improvement, however, this improvement is presented in an innovative way, since it starts from the theoretical support, from those arguments that characters of the psychology of learning and cognition have raised, through their explanations of how the process of learning occurs, from the process of teaching. The data reveal that high-performing students use more strategies than low-performing ones. Hence the importance of guiding students in the use of learning strategies so that they can perform a variety of tasks and facilitate the study of the different disciplines that make up the curriculum throughout their careers, helping them to be more autonomous and effective in their learning.

It is a fact that intelligent algorithms are currently managing to solve a large number of tasks that people require in their daily lives. They do this through techniques such as machine learning, neural networks, genetic algorithms, facial recognition, etc. Their applications in banking, music, shopping, health, social networks and security make us aware of this reality. Among these advances, today we mention the socalled cognitive enhancements. In this paper we analyze what they are about and how they influence the human rights system, where notions such as equality, equity, dignity and self-determination are included, mainly between enhanced or revised humans -cyborgs- and others that are not. Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a difference between irony and sarcasm in the framework of cognitive pragmatics. We consider that the rise of the pragmatic turn allows us to understand the enrichment of what has been said, according to Recanati’s point of view (2003). However, the phenomenological level of what has been said has to be anchored at a deeper level: the conceptual structure. We postulate that, to the extent that sarcasm is linked to a victimizing effect, there are layers (Coulson, 2005) that allow the emergence of sarcastic interpretation. In irony, such a victimizing effect is not a necessary condition (Kreuz 2020). In order to visualize the topography of sarcasm, we develop an analysis method based on a tetraspatial model: a generic space, two input spaces and a blended space (Fauconnier & Turner, 2002). It is in the blend where the sarcastic meaning arises because there the victimizing effect of the mocking expressions is reflected.

Abstract This paper aims to analyze the current theories of emotions by Agnes Heller, Martha Nussbaum and Peter Hacker and the arguments they propose to rehabilitate emotions within the moral and political field. The analysis consists of four moments: first, analyses the arguments that the three philosophers propose to support the idea that emotions are important to survival and development of human life. Second, it explains what the authors mean by defining emotions as cognitive phenomena. Third, it shows the incidence of society and culture in learning and in the experience of emotions. Based on the previous clarifications, the fourth section explains more clearly the interweaving between emotions, morals and politics. The main conclusions are that despite the conceptual and methodological differences between the three philosophers, their work allows to draw coincidences and complements that give solid support to the thesis that emotions are essential for human life and its moral and political behavior. It also concludes that the results of this dialogue are a conceptual framework that can guide more specific work on the relationship of the affective world and the social and political world.

This paper examines how the use of multiple platforms is tied to awareness of algorithms. It builds on the premise that users interact with ecologies or environments of technologies rather than single platforms. The study also supplements work on algorithmic awareness by implementing a mixed-method study to account for how Costa Rican users of Netflix and Spotify understood and related to the algorithms of these platforms. This study combined a survey of 258 participants and 21 in-depth semistructured interviews. Findings demonstrate that multi-platform users were more aware of algorithms and carried out more practical actions to obtain algorithmic recommendations than single-platform users. Although user type did not predict participants’ attitudes towards algorithmic recommendations, higher levels of awareness were associated with more positive attitudes towards algorithms. The study also shows that differences in levels of awareness explained users’ emotional arousal derived from algorithms. Obesity is considered a modifiable risk factor for cognitive impairment which, in turn, predisposes to overeating and weight gain. Compelling evidence in animal models has demonstrated the impact of the gut microbiome on cognition, in general, and cognitive decline in obesity, in particular. However, in humans, while the role of the gut microbiome in obesity pathophysiology is acknowledged, the effects on obesity-associated cognitive dysfunction are limited. The present thesis aims to describe the impact of the gut microbiome on cognitive function in middle-aged subjects with obesity. For this purpose, a prospective longitudinal case-control study (n=114) of subjects with and without obesity was conducted. Clinical evaluation, neurocognitive assessment of memory and inhibitory control, brain gray matter volume through magnetic resonance imaging, fecal metagenomics and fecal/plasma metabolomics were performed. Some parameters were also measured in two independent cohorts (n=24, n=970). The experimental design included fecal microbiota transplantation models from humans to mice and afterwards neuropsychological testing and prefrontal cortex gene expression analysis in the recipient mice. The results point to the existence of an ecosystem of gut bacteria that is differentially linked to memory function and inhibitory control in subjects with and without obesity. In this sense, impairments in memory and inhibitory control were observed in individuals with obesity. Convergent and divergent patterns of bacterial species, functions and circulating metabolites were longitudinally described and mostly replicated in independent cohorts. In particular, alterations in aromatic amino acids and one-carbon metabolism pathways were identified. Gray matter volume of brain areas involved in memory and inhibitory control were concordantly associated with the gut microbiome profile. Finally, cognitive deficits from human donors with obesity were phenocopied in recipient mice through fecal microbiota transplantation, leading to decreased memory and inhibition-like behavior scores in mice and congruent associations with human donor’s metagenomic species and functions. Mice prefrontal cortex expression of aromatic amino acids- and one-carbon metabolism-related genes were simultaneously linked to the cognition-like behaviors in mice and different human bacterial clusters. Overall, these innovative findings suggest bidirectional host-microbiome networks that may impact brain physiology and highlight the potential diagnostic and therapeutic value of targeting the gut microbiome for the impairment of memory and inhibitory control, particularly in subjects with obesity L'obesitat es considera un factor de risc modificable per al deteriorament cognitiu que, al seu torn, predisposa a menjar en excés i augmentar de pes.

In this paper I propose that the origin of complex syntax lies in a cognitive operation consisting in conceiving events as entities. It is this operation that causes the construction of subordinate sentences in which a sentence takes the place of a syntagm and performs its syntactic function.
