This paper will discuss how interdisciplinarity, collaboration and participation have been re-imagined in large-scale digital cultural heritage projects, taking the Congruence Engine project as a case study, by highlighting how the interplay between the collaborative nature of DH, and systematic action research can bring together the human and computational.

This panel will explore the various aspects of what is involved, not only in conceiving and building a 3D infrastructure, but in creating 3D Scholarly editions and developing the viewers that allow stories to be created around them. This poster presents the collaborative creation of a dataset of 100.000+ pages of handwritten police reports as a successful example of large-scale digitisation initiatives by small-scale research projects. It shows efficient solutions for applying Handwritten Text Recognition techniques on challenging historical documents and for bypassing noisy training material.

The panel has as its focus how collaboration in and implementation of DH methods has opened up a) new knowledge networks in the (conservative) field of Pietism and Religious History and b) transformed understandings of traditional disciplinary structures and hierarchies.

OstData is a research data service for Central, East, and Southeast European Studies. Based on its fine-grained metadata schema and faceted classification system, the research data repository and discovery system enables interdisciplinary collaboration as opportunity and fosters networking of national and international research communities, research infrastructures, and funders.

MemoRekall is a free and open-source web app to annotate a video enhanced by adding notes, documents, or web links. Originally conceived for the preservation and documentation of performing arts, two European citizen science projects (COSMIC and COESO) lead to broaden its uses and develop new functionalities. Both projects share the same methodological approach, based on action research and co-design. Encouraging the use of the digitized materials is a complex goal that involves each - cultural heritage institutions, research funding frameworks, and researchers to some degree. These developments have led a few institutions to initiate GLAM Labs (glamlabs.io) that focus on developing the digital opportunities afforded by galleries, libraries, archives, museums. Following the role models in the international community, the National Library of Estonia has been developing a virtual lab - a portal and an interface for users to gain access and find uses to digital data. This entails keeping in mind the interests of many stakeholders - balancing the needs and opportunities for the library with the requirements for the collection user. We present the virtual lab, its tools and datasets, as launched in January 2023. We will show the journey there and the conclusions made on the basis of this. During the development, we have piloted several interface options to access text sources in bulk and share our data in multiple accessible formats. We've conducted a service design as well as a legal analysis to understand the interests of the representative members of the potential user community and how the library can respond to them. Our virtual lab has aimed to learn from the GLAM Labs in other institutions (see e.g. Mahey et al. 2019). We aim to build our user community so that the researchers get the credit due for their work, and will be offered a place to showcase their work. So that the work done in transforming and enhancing the data by the users would find its way back to the library. And that library itself would get feedback on its collections and find value in its novel potential uses. We will discuss the lessons learned during the development process. We offer access to the open textual resources among the newspapers, periodicals, and book publications 1800-2022, the data from the national bibliography, as well as a number of thematic collections built around it. Our tools include a few visualization tools and interfaces to manipulate and query the data online. And we feature a number of blog posts based on the case studies performed on our collections by students and researchers. These digital collections offer new opportunities for cultural heritage institutions as well as their visitors and users, but the process towards it requires learning from various perspectives. Through encouraged use cases, the users learn better to anticipate and benefit from what the library collections can offer, and the library can incrementally improve the resources that it can offer the users while learning about the value found in these resources. We argue that for a successful project, collaboration is key between these different actors based on their interests, and aspire to offer a good example in how this can be organized in a small community. ARS is a networking platform for architecture research that enables new interdisciplinary collaborations. The presentation outlines the infrastructural need for a platform like ARS and explains the underlying collaboration model relying on graph-technology. A showcase of the prototype displays and discusses learnings from first user tests and the development process.

This paper utilizes the concept of remediation (of research conceptualization, of data, and by interfaces) to describe the processes developed by Linked Infrastructure for Networked Cultural Scholarship (LINCS), a Canadian infrastructure project for mobilizing Canadian scholarship through the creation, dissemination, and use of linked open data (LOD).

This research, within the framework of computational archives, inspects a novel approach to representing intangible knowledge in traditional martial arts. The methodology presents a unity of ontological modeling, semantic annotation, and feature-based machine learning to display, (re-)interpret, and transmit embodied knowledge using multimodal digital archives.

With this paper we would like to reflect on Proyecto Humboldt Digital's strategy for building digital capacities –that is, learning new skills and methodologies at an individual and organizational level– through collaboration. The international collaboration established in Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD) has not been limited to carrying out a technical workflow but continuously organizes the exchange of research activities and experiences, and builds on a wide set of both internal (team oriented) and external (community oriented) training activities. Despite restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, short stays in both Havana and Berlin have taken place since 2019 as well as monthly meetings in virtual format; more recently, in 2022 an international DH conference and a workshop about digital scholarly editions took place in La Habana (Cuba) organized by the team members. During these encounters, we were able to define software requirements, present our main results, share the main issues and progress made in retrospect, and plan our following activities in order to publish online a collection of texts related to Alexander von Humboldt's trip to Cuba in the 19th century.

The multilingual DraCor platform (https://www.dracor.org) represents a valuable resource for literature and theatre scholars, allowing them to host, access and analyse thousands of plays from Antiquity to the XX century. After briefly presenting the workflow for the ingestion of new plays into our ecosystem, we focus on the collaborative side of our endeavours, demonstrating how external scholars can benefit from a range of tools and guides to easily prepare and submit their own collections. As a showcase of the process, we present three corpora currently in production, focusing respectively on Ukrainian, Czech, and Early Modern English literature.

This panel will explore the processes of establishing an evidence base for the development of a new Digital Humanities Association for the UK and Ireland. Presentations will discuss: the landscape of DH in the UK and Ireland; the development of a values-led organisation; community, consultation and inclusivity; the importance of advocacy for DH and the role of a DH Association in national policy-making; and the centrality of training and the development of career pathways in and from DH. A concluding presentation will reflect on the value of international collaboration, both between Ireland and the UK and among international subject associations and infrastructures.

A collaboration between the Linked Art II project and Participatory Knowledge Practices in Analogue and Digital Image Archives (PIA) has led to a reconfigurable Python-based workflow to transform cultural heritage data, initially photographic collections, into Linked Open Usable Data (LOUD), as a foundation for varied participatory interfaces supporting scholarship and beyond. Motivation PIA, led by the University of Basel and the Bern Academy of the Arts, aims to encourage participation from scholars and the wider public through three collections from the photographic archives of the Swiss Society for Folklore Studies (SSFS): The Atlas of Swiss Folklore, Ernst Brunner, and Kreis Family. PIA aims to create multiple interfaces reflecting diverse perspectives by deploying community-developed LOUD specifications such as the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and Linked Art, an RDF application profile (JSON-LD) based on CIDOC-CRM to describe object-based cultural heritage. In collaboration with the University of Oxford via the Linked Art II project, PIA has transformed their cultural heritage collection data into Linked Art using templates, which encapsulate the data characteristics and cataloguing practices. A Linked Art API will provide an additional entry point, as a means of conveying semantically enriched events and as a benchmark against other collections leveraging this model. Python-based Workflow To generate Linked Art files for the combined PIA collection a data transformation workflow has been created through which PIA templates were encoded in Python for a given Linked Art API entity endpoint, currently: DigitalObject HumanMadeObject and Set. The workflow, described in a use case example with a photograph from the Ernst Brunner collection, provides a three-step software process for transforming data into Linked Art. Query: The first Python script extracts collection data from the (legacy) PIA JSON API. YAML front matters are used for script variables. The filepath for the relevant .yaml file is specified as a script argument throughout the workflow. For our example, the script queried data for all images looking for DigitalObject entities (one of the variables) and the object's metadata that are stored come specifically from https://json.participatory-archives.ch/api/v1/images/12033} Map: Templates are used to map collection data to an intermediate JSON data format. The intermediate JSON data format means that the later transformation script that creates Linked Art JSON-LD does not necessarily need to be modified if a new data source is introduced. Transform: The intermediate JSON data format is transformed to Linked Art with Python functions that define ‘patterns’ (for example classified_as) for representing different aspects of photographic collection data as Linked Art. Future Work The SSFS will migrate its database into the DaSCH Service Platform (DSP) and amend their data model which will affect PIA, requiring an upgrade of its infrastructure and APIs. The workflow for creating Linked Art representations will have to be reconfigured and repurposed with different data sources. After the migration of the SSFS database, the PIA team will investigate remaining issues in the GitHub repository regarding the correct mapping of Linked Art entities and attribution of IDs. The team will work to ensure that the appropriate Linked Art modelling is achieved through the workflow. Conclusion The reconfigurable Python-based workflow is able to transform cultural heritage data, initially photographic collections, into LOUD, as a foundation for varied participatory interfaces supporting scholarship and beyond. The adaptability and extensibility of the workflow allows for potential future transformations of data from other collections to Linked Art. This poster presents the proposal for a web-based tool designed to create graph-based digital commentaries. The tool is based on the Web Annotation Data Model and allows collaboration of several users in the preparation of a commentary.

An early-stage study analysing the present and future of DH curricula, pedagogy, and practices in the Indian context. The project uses a case study method to comment on the pressing issues, and also proposes development of a curricular framework basis the data collected during the study.

This panel discusses the Pelagios Network, a decade-long collaboration that has been developing methods, tools and communities for linking Humanities resources online. Our discussion will focus on managing a series of collaborative tensions between decentralisation and coordination, sustainability and development, and individual needs and community growth.

This CATMA (Computer Assisted Text Markup and Analysis) workshop is intended for users with some preliminary experience with manual digital annotation who (want to) operate with larger amounts of annotation data in the context of their own work or research projects. It will demonstrate the basic features of CATMA and how annotation data can be processed using either the Python package GitMA (Vauth et al. 2021) or the web-based visualization tool vis-À-vis (Münz-Manor et al. 2020). The workshop will provide answers to questions like: How do I access my CATMA annotation data via GitMA? How do I calculate the agreement between multiple annotators? How do I generate advanced visualizations of the texts and annotations in vis-À-vis? How do I visualize collaboratively created annotation data stored in multiple collections?
