This article addresses what kind of learning-teaching process should be applied to teach visual culture teaching in the Special Teaching Methods II course given as part of the visual arts teacher education program in Turkey. The study was designed with action research which is, one of the qualitative research methods using a two-step process. The first step was achieved with the participation of 24 preservice art teachers in a state university. In the second step, four volunteers were selected from among the participants of the first step and their process of implementing lesson plans in a visual arts course of a secondary school was examined. Data were obtained from observations, document analysis, and interviews which were then analyzed inductively. This paper focuses on four themes that emerged from the analysis of the data: realize, practice, relate and experience. In the study, it was concluded that preservice teachers develop awareness of how visual culture shapes meaning, shows willingness to raise awareness of society by drawing attention to social problems in their artistic work, and that their lesson plans effectively reflect their achievements regarding visual culture studies.

Background: Communication of people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is negatively affected. For PwPD with communication difficulties, it is important to use self‐assessment tools as a primary assessment approach to evaluate their perspectives on communication. It is also important to evaluate PwPDs with self‐assessment scales in order to determine in which situations their communicative effectiveness is affected and to include them in the intervention plan. Aims: To create a Turkish version of the Communicative Effectiveness Survey‐Revised (CES‐R), to examine its validity and reliability, and to investigate its applicability in PwPD. Method: The study included 106 PwPD and 106 healthy participants. The original form of the CES‐R was adapted into Turkish according to international guidelines. Every participant completed the Turkish version of CES‐R and the Voice Handicap Index‐10 form. The adapted scale was retested 2 weeks later. Outcomes and Results: Because the Kaiser‐Meyer‐Olkin coefficient was 0.956 in the exploratory factor analysis of the CES‐R and p < 0.01 for Bartlett's Test, the data set is 'perfectly' suitable for factor analysis. In the explanatory factor analysis applied in the CES‐R scale, the total explanatory ratio of the two dimensions was determined as 63.5%, and the validity condition was met. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.958 in the PwPD group and 0.955 in the control group and the scale was found to be at the 'high reliability' level. Conclusion: The CES‐R is a valid, reliable, and useable self‐assessment scale for Turkish PwPD. Furthermore, this adaptation research was developed to assess possible communication difficulties for PwPD. With this tool, difficulties in communication skills that can be identified by a comprehensive evaluation should also be studied in the intervention processes. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject: Self‐assessment tools are suggested as a primary use when evaluating people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) with communication difficulties. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: This study demonstrates the validity and reliability of the Turkish CES‐R scale and its applicability to PwPD. In this study, it is aimed to determine the awareness level of the elements registered in the name of Turkey in the list created within the scope of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in terms of "recognition" and "experience", and to present suggestions for the safeguarding, sustainability and transmission of cultural heritage to next generations based on the awareness level. In this respect, the online survey developed based on the literature was applied to the citizens of Republic of Turkey aged over 20 between January 24 - March 28, 2021. The survey questions only consist of the elements in the Representative List. A total of 1550 people from seven regions of Turkey responded to the survey. Descriptive statistics and Importance-Performance Analysis were used to analyze the data. As a priority, in the list created within the scope of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the public awareness and experience levels of nineteen intangible cultural heritage elements registered in the name of Turkey have been determined and the awareness level of each intangible cultural heritage elements has been identified. As a result of the analysis of the data, the intangible cultural heritage elements are located in the Familiarity- Experience matrix. According to the findings obtained as a result of the positioning, 5 intangible cultural heritage elements with a high level of awareness were identified: "Turkish Coffee and Tradition", "Karagöz", "Nevruz", "Flatbread Making and Sharing Tradition: Lavash, Katırma, Jupka, Yufka" and "Spring Festival Hıdırellez". The "familiarity" and "experience" levels of these elements are high and it is important to carry out studies for their safeguarding and sustainability. It has been determined that five intangible cultural heritage elements with high "familiarity" levels and low "experience" levels have a partial awareness level. These elements are; "Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival", "Marbling: Turkish Paper Decoration Art", "Dede Korkut-Korkut Ata Heritage: Culture, Legends and Music", "Mevlevi Sema Ceremonies" and "The Tradition of Minstrelsy". It is important to concentrate on these elements and make an effort to develop them. It has been determined that the remaining 9 intangible cultural heritage elements have very low levels of both "familiarity" and "experience". It is necessary to take serious measures to ensure that these elements are not forgotten and disappeared by the society. These elements with very low awareness in the society are as follows; "Mesir Macunu Festival", "Miniature Art", "Traditional Conversation Meetings (Yaren, Barana, Sira Nights etc.)", "Traditional Tile Art", "Traditional Turkish Archery", "Meddah Tradition", "Alevi-Bektashi Ritual Semah", "Traditional Ceremonial Keskek" and "Traditional Intelligence and Strategy Game: Togyzqumalaq, Toguz Korgool, Mangala/Göçürme". Based on these findings, in order to increase the awareness level of intangible cultural heritage elements and to keep them alive, it is thought that it is necessary to use the media effectively, to raise awareness of the society from childhood, and the state to encourage and support activities in this direction. Purpose: This paper is concerned with the concept of reflexive agency through the biography and memoirs of Georg Mayer, a Jewish businessman who immigrated to Turkey before 1945 and lived there for almost 40 years. This paper aims to explore reflexive agency using the concepts of structural conditions (socioeconomic background), contextual stimuli (activation of reflexivity) and individual perspectives at different points in life (main concerns, reflection on the past, projects and decision-making). Design/methodology/approach: This paper is developed using qualitative research methods, analyzing a variety of sources including books, papers, biographical materials and personal memoirs. Primary sources are three books written about him and Mayer Stores using the method of oral history. Moreover, Mayer's memoirs, which provided rich information about his observations of people, acts and culture, were analyzed. Findings: Several conclusions can be drawn. While there are typologies for reflexive agency, it is found that a person can fit into several modes at different times and/or at the same time. Another finding is that an individual's social network is an important factor for his/her reflexive agency. When immigrating to another country with a contextual discontinuity and structural change, an established community and economic opportunities are important factors. A strong stimulus such as a life threat can be a force majeure and trigger for individuals to take risks, affecting their abilities of reflexivity. Originality/value: This paper presents a unique case study that examines immigration from Western countries before 1945. This paper tries to provide detailed information about social context, including critical milestones, bring the concepts of culture, identity, migration and reflexivity together by analyzing an atypical business figure through his biography and personal memoirs, and use narrative analysis to explain how a reflexive person can act in contextual discontinuity, hence showing how structural, cultural and personal emergent properties can be understood together. This paper aims to explore how children's achieving privacy is interwoven with parental recognition of their agency, by providing empirical accounts of family lives in Türkiye. Building on a relational understanding of agency and privacy, it debates both concepts as social constructs that can be distinctively understood in western and Turkish cultures. It employs ethnographic research with children aged 10–14 years and their families to illustrate everyday contexts of parental privacy invasions and children's exercise of relational agency in response. This paper investigates the association between religion and female labor market outcomes using new micro-level data on two distinct Muslim denominations in Turkey: Sunni and Alevi Muslims. We find a positive and significant association between being an Alevi Muslim and female labor force participation and employment, whereas there are no significant differences in male labor market outcomes between the two denominations. We provide evidence that Alevi Muslims have more gender-equal views regarding the role of women in the labor market and consider themselves as more modern. Both Sunnis and Alevis consider themselves as believers in religion (Islam). However, Sunnis are more likely to abide by the rules of religion. We argue that differences in views on gender roles and self-identity regarding modernity between the two denominations drive the results on female labor market outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the readiness of our patient population for the transfer to adult care and the applicability of the TRANSITION-Q and STARx scales to the Turkish adolescent patient population. Patients and methods: A total of 153 patients (92 males, 61 females; mean age: 15.5±1.9 years; range, 12 to 18 years) were included in the study between September 15, 2021, and December 15, 2021. The patients were divided into two groups according to age groups: 12 to 15 years old and 16 to 18 years old. The patients were also divided into four groups according to their diagnosis: connective tissue diseases, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, vasculitis, and autoinflammatory diseases. The TRANSITION-Q and STARx scales were administered face-to-face by a nurse and a doctor. The transition readiness of the patients was evaluated according to their scores. Results: Sixty-nine (45%) patients were in the 12 to 15 age group, and 84 (55%) were in the 16 to 18 age group. Eight-four (54.9%) patients had juvenile idiopathic arthritis, 47 (30.7%) patients had an autoinflammatory disease, 14 (9.2%) patients had vasculitis, and eight (5.2%) patients had a connective tissue disease. There was no significant difference in the scale scores according to disease groups and sexes in both scales. Considering the age of the patients, the mean scores of the patients in the 16 to 18 age group were found to be significantly higher compared to the 12 to 15 age group for both the TRANSITION-Q (74.3±13.3 vs. 65.4±9.6, p<0.001) and STARx scales (51.8±8.1 vs. 44.8±9.1, p<0.001). Cronbach's alpha score was 0.71 for the STARx scale and 0.79 for the TRANSITION-Q scale. Conclusion: TRANSITION-Q and STARx scales could guide the Turkish patient population in determining the pretransition needs of patients in planning individualized transition processes. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of speech-language pathology--related specialists (SPs) and speech-language pathology (SLP) students toward stuttering. Furthermore, we identified the factors that influence changes in the attitudes of SLP students and SPs in various countries. Method: Using a search formula, the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases were used to conduct primary and secondary screening for analysis. All previous studies included in the systematic review focused on SPs or SLP students and were published in English. Studies were collected and screened independently by the first and second authors and then discussed between them. Twenty-two studies with varying research designs and sample sizes were included in the systematic review. Finally, information on authors, publishing year, participant, country or region, assessment materials, and the results were extracted and organized before analysis. Results: Twenty-two articles from eight countries and one region (Middle East) were extracted. The results showed that SLP students and SPs in different countries have different attitudes toward stuttering depending on their education, experience, geographic location, cultural status, and societal development, but stereotypes of people who stutter (PWS) persist (e.g., nervous), and the attitudes toward the clinics appear to be more negative in Western countries. Conclusions: Negative attitudes toward PWS remain among both SLP students and SPs. Thus, the factors that may influence the attitudes of SLP students and SPs should be taken into account in academic and clinical education in fluency disorders, and the education content must be structured to improve the quality of education and the attitude toward PWS. In the creative process of design, sources of inspiration can be drawn from nature, including visuals, concepts, or functionalities. Metaphors can be employed to concretize visual and functional data in shaping the form of a product. When metaphors are utilized for conveying ideas, they can serve as potent tools for designers in the development of new products. Using analogies in design, designers can integrate various cultural, traditional, and belief-related structures, thereby contributing to forming a product's design. In reviewing product design examples inspired by metaphors found in the literature, it is possible to observe numerous instances where visual or functional aspects mimic nature. However, there needs to be more research in the literature regarding the use of metaphors in the context of beliefs. This research specifically focuses on industrial products designed by drawing inspiration from a particular belief system, Sufism, which can also be described as the mystical expression of the Islamic faith. Products designed and produced in Turkey, influenced by Sufi beliefs, are metaphorically discussed. Purpose: Research has demonstrated that employees desire to be shown appreciation in various ways. The five languages of appreciation provide a model for exploring these differences. This study aims to explore whether individuals who speak different languages (and are from various cultures) differ in how they prefer to be shown appreciation. Design/methodology/approach: The Motivating By Appreciation Inventory (MBAI) is an online tool that assesses each person's preferences in how they desire to be shown appreciation at work. Initially developed in English, the MBAI has been translated into seven additional languages. Over 2,200 employees took the MBAI in their preferred spoken language: Mandarin (Chinese), Danish, French (Canadian), Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish (Latin American), Thai and Turkish. The frequency of each group's preferred appreciation languages was analyzed to determine similarities and differences across the languages spoken. Findings: Given the non-normal distribution of the data, the Kruskal–Wallis test found that there was a significant difference in preferences for participants' primary appreciation language across the seven groups of various spoken languages. One key theme was that words of affirmation were most frequently chosen by five of the seven language groups, whereas employees from Thailand and Turkey chose acts of service most frequently. Additionally, tangible gifts were the least frequently chosen appreciation language by all groups, and at rates below their US counterparts. In three of the languages, quality time was preferred significantly less compared with the other languages. Research limitations/implications: Some of the groups' findings (Portuguese, Thai) may be impacted by a confounding variable of the type of work setting (manufacturing) in which the employees worked – in comparison to office-based work settings. Practical implications: One theme was, in comparison to other ways of receiving appreciation, tangible gifts are not highly valued by most employees across all language groups. Therefore, organizations using gifts as the primary way to communicate appreciation to employees may be wasting a lot of money. Similar to English-speaking employees, five of the seven language groups chose words as their preferred appreciation language. A wide range exists, however, across language groups with regards to the proportion who desire words, quality time or acts of service. Multicultural organizations should pay attention to employee preferences, lest they waste time and energy on undesired actions. Originality/value: To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study that has examined the preferences of how employees like to be shown appreciation across seven different language groups. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of police occupational culture on police officers' job satisfaction and motivation in Turkey. Drawing data from a survey of 1970 Turkish National police officers, six dimensions of police occupational culture – including authoritarianism, alienation, social cohesion and loyalty, cynicism towards the public, and autonomy – were identified to assess their impact on motivation and job satisfaction of officers. The findings suggest that social cohesion, loyalty, and autonomy were significant and positive predictors of police officers' job satisfaction but alienation and cynicism were found to have a negative relationship with job satisfaction. Regarding motivation, while alienation and authoritarianism had a negative effect on police officers' work motivation, social cohesion was positively related to motivation. These mixed findings suggest that there is a wide variation in how various dimensions of police occupational culture influence officers' job satisfaction and work motivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While Turkey and the World are dealing with current health issues, research on Dede Korkut continued unhindered. Causing the deaths of millions in Turkey and the World, new Coronavirus (Covit-19) outbreak has affected adversely our lives in all its parts. This very new circumstances have made us to reconstructed our daily life including relationship, nutrition, economics, education and even our health systems. Experiencing new priorities, the excitement among Turcologists and in the public created by the discovery of Dede Korkut's 13th epos in 2019 has lost its influence. Furthermore, the abolishment of 100 basic literary work regulation has negative effect on the amount of popular publications as well. Being aware of all unfamiliar news, scholars have continued to work on Dede Korkut in 2020, as in the past years. However, have these foregoing events affected the studies centered on the Dede Korkut Book in terms of quantity? In this paper, it has been evaluated the studies appeared in 2020 by focusing on this question. All these studies have been evaluated by using statistics and annotated comparative analysis methods, which enable us to understand how Covid-19 climate has affected quantity of work on Dede Korkut in different rates. Introduction: Limited research on experiences of women, who constitute a double vulnerable group in both women and refugee status, regarding sexual and reproductive health. The purpose of this study is to examine the knowledge, beliefs, and cultural practices of Afghan women living in Türkiye regarding sexual and reproductive health. Method: This descriptive phenomenological study was conducted with 18 Afghan refugee women. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. Results: Four themes emerged from interviews: cultural practices and beliefs related to pregnancy and postpartum, use of contraceptive methods, gender-based violence, and access to health services. Conclusions: Afghan women have different cultural practices regarding prenatal, pregnancy, and postpartum and lack of knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. Considering individual differences in sexual and reproductive health, providing sensitive, supportive, and informative services is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research tries to present the culture produced by the postmodernist system and its effects on musical culture. Concepts of postmodernism can become degenerating factors as well as contributing to the development of cultural hegemony at the level of modernity. With the understanding of "indisputable freedom and everything is free" in his intellectual theory, he creates liberal changes in subjects such as lifestyle, culture, digitalization and the market. In this way, production has become a part of popular consumption culture. As with lifestyle, fashion, TV and advertising, art is commodified, far from the norm. In this study, it is focused on to what extent and how communal musical culture and traditions were affected in the platform of multicultural postmodernist pluralism in Turkey after 1960. This study aims to analyze Syrian women's experience of violence from the perspective of the service providers by using intersectionality as an analytical lens. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 13 service providers working in areas highly populated by Syrians in Konya, Turkey. Harmful traditional practices, societal violence reflected in gender-based discrimination, discrimination in work life, and inability to access to complaint mechanisms are the basic findings of the study. Revealing how the intersections and interrelatedness of class, ethnicity, culture, and migration status shape the experiences of Syrian women is expected to contribute to the implementation of anti-oppressive practices of social workers. Building on the Relational Motivation Theory, the present research argues that relational motivations (RM) underlie both the regulation and the moral judgment of socially (un)responsive Covid-19 behaviors (e.g., physical distancing) and links these two via moral identity. We hypothesize that different types of socially unresponsive behaviors are judged morally wrong through perceptions of RM violations and that a stronger concern for unity predicts the extent to which individuals self-report to perform socially responsive Covid-19 behaviors. Additionally, the role of moral identity as an individual-level moderator variable linking perceptions about RM violation to the practice of Covid-19 responsible behaviors is explored. The results support the predictions with data collected from participants living in Turkey and the USA. In both cultures, socially unresponsive Covid-19 behaviors of others were judged morally wrong through RMs, plus individuals' general concern for unity predicted their self-reported socially responsive Covid-19 behaviors. Additionally, for the sample from Turkey, results revealed that the general concern for unity was positively associated with self-reported tendencies to perform Covid-19 socially responsive behaviors only among individuals with a low or moderate moral identity, but not when moral identity was high. Collective future thinking, namely the anticipation of events for a group, is a relatively new research area in memory studies. Research to date with predominantly Western populations suggests that people tend to expect negative events for their country's future. In two studies, we investigated the emotional valence and perceived control of anticipated future events of one's country and examined the roles of country identification and national well-being in collective future thinking. US and Chinese college students (Study 1) and US, Chinese, and Turkish adults of a community sample (Study 2) imagined events that could happen to their respective countries in 1 week, 1 year, and 10–15 years. Participants rated each event on emotional valence and perceived control. They also completed measures for their country identification and perceived national well-being. Chinese participants imagined future events for their country to be more positive than did the US and Turkish participants, whereas US participants reported higher perceived control by their country for the future events than did Chinese and Turks. Country identification and national well-being predicted more positive future thinking and also mediated cultural differences in future-event valence and perceived country control. Background: Culturally competent nurses should be the main goal of nursing education. Aims: This qualitative study intended to reveal opinions and experiences of nursing students on culture and cultural care. Methods: The study was done among 41 nursing students. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire form in focus group interviews. Results: Majority of the nursing students reported that they experience difficulties due to language, dialect, eye contact, gender, religion, racism/ nationalism and biological variables when providing care to individuals from other cultures and experience despair/sadness, feel angry, show positive discrimination. Nursing students reported that unprejudiced approach, empathy, cultural sensitivity and sufficient command of foreign languages make nursing care easier. Dating violence is manifested in different forms between romantic partners. Psychological violence, the most common form of dating violence, is more likely to affect women, eliciting feelings such as shame and guilt. The robust relationship of sexism to psychological dating violence victimization (PDVV) is well-documented but whether PDVV serves as a mechanism linking sexism to guilt and shame remains unexplored. This study, therefore, investigated the potential mediating role of PDVV in the association between sexist attitudes and feelings of guilt and shame. Dating college women (N = 219) from Turkey, an honor culture in which one's self-worth lies on one's evaluation as well as the assessment of what others think, participated in the study. High rates of PDVV were found in this culture, and structural equation modeling revealed that PDVV mediated the relationship between sexism and feelings of guilt and shame. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for future research and how sexist attitudes might be challenged to reduce the adverse emotional effects experienced by women who are victims of psychological dating violence. In honor cultures, relatively minor disputes can escalate, making numerous forms of aggression widespread. We find evidence that honor cultures’ focus on virility impedes a key conflict de-escalation strategy—apology—that can be successfully promoted through a shift in mindset. Across five studies using mixed methods (text analysis of congressional speeches, a cross-cultural comparison, surveys, and experiments), people from honor societies (e.g., Turkey and US honor states), people who endorse honor values, and people who imagine living in a society with strong honor norms are less willing to apologize for their transgressions (studies 1–4). This apology reluctance is driven by concerns about reputation in honor cultures. Notably, honor is achieved not only by upholding strength and reputation (virility) but also through moral integrity (virtue). The dual focus of honor suggests a potential mechanism for promoting apologies: shifting the focus of honor from reputation to moral integrity. Indeed, we find that such a shift led people in honor cultures to perceive apologizing more positively and apologize more (study 5). By identifying a barrier to apologizing in honor cultures and illustrating ways to overcome it, our research provides insights for deploying culturally intelligent conflict-management strategies in such contexts. The study aimed to adapt and validate the COVID-19 Traumatic Stress Scale in Turkish. The scale consisted of three dimensions: "threat/fear of infection and death," "economic hardship," and "disturbed routines/isolation." The Turkish version (COVID-19 Traumatic Scale-TR) was tested on a convenience sample of 432 online participants. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the three dimensions of the COVID-19 Traumatic Stress Scale, but with item 9 removed, resulting in an 11-item scale. Cronbach's α score for the 11-item scale was 0.85. The scale may be important to test the impact of COVID-19 on different psychosocial domains, including economic impact and isolation, in Turkey. This article examines the Panorama Museum of Conquest in Istanbul, a triumphalist example of state‐led nostalgia, to understand how a national emotional attachment is sustained or contested through new forms of engagement with history. Using the dual‐process model of cognition, particularly the differentiation between declarative and nondeclarative personal and public cultures, I take the museum as a manifestation of neo‐Ottomanist public culture where national identities are performed, to delve into the process of emotional meaning making. I complicate the link between affective experience at the museum and national emotions, and theorize the different coupling possibilities among the two. When the personal and public culture seamlessly match, with people following the highly schematized cues, visitors understand their emotions as pride and gratitude. When the personal and public culture are loosely coupled, a group of visitors lament the bygone glorious era—which does not reflect the felt state at the museum. Some visitors are able to synthesize different political projects during their visit, where others want to sanitize public discourse from neo‐Ottomanist emotions altogether. The dual‐process model helps answer why in the same national‐sensory setting, people emote differently, whereby complicating our understanding of national‐attachment to the state. In this article, I review research on adolescent–parent relationships and youth well‐being in Turkey. Turkey is a country that has changed rapidly due to urbanization and globalization, and that is characterized by cultural heterogeneity in values, all of which have implications for parent–child relationships. I focus first on parenting styles, and then discuss two dimensions of parenting—warmth and parental control—that are considered more universal and culturally variable, respectively, in terms of their associations with well‐being. Overall, research from Turkey is consistent with findings across cultures, showing a positive link between higher warmth and youth well‐being. But recent research has challenged the cultural normativity hypothesis, which claims that psychological control may not harm the well‐being of children in collectivist cultures because it is perceived as a norm in its sociocultural context. The Pediatric Upper-extremity Motor Activity Log-Revised (PMAL-R) is a structured interview that measures use of the more-affected arm in daily life in children with cerebral palsy (CP). This study investigated the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of a Turkish version of the PMAL-R. The PMAL-R was translated and cross-culturally adapted to Turkish and administered to parents of eighty children with hemiplegic CP between 2-17 years. Its concurrent validity was examined by correlating scores on the PMAL-R How Well and How Often scales with ABILHAND-Kids scores. Fifty parents were re-interviewed after three weeks to establish test-retest reliability. PMAL-R scores were strongly correlated with ABILHAND-Kids scores (How Well scale, r = 0.78, p < 0.001; How Often scale, r = 0.59, p < 0.001). PMAL-R test-retest reliability (Intraclass correlation; How Often = 0.98, How Well = 0.99) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α; How Often = 0.96, How Well = 0.97) were high. This translation of the PMAL-R has good reliability and validity for measuring everyday use of the more-affected arm in Turkish children with hemiparesis due to CP between 2–17 years. An instrument that evaluates real-world arm use in Turkish children with CP. Reliability and concurrent validity of the Turkish PMAL-R is established in 2–17-year old with upper-extremity hemiparesis. Systematic replication of the clinimetric properties of the English PMAL-R is demonstrated in a wider age range than previously, 2–17 years vs. 2–8 years. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of self-esteem of pre-service teachers studying in the physical education and sports teaching department in Turkey and Iran. 80 Turkish and 111 Iranian students constituted the participant group of the study designed using the cross-cultural comparative research method. The Cooper smith Self-Esteem Inventory, the validity and reliability studies of which were conducted in both countries, was used as a data collection tool in the study. Two-way analysis of variance (was used to analyze the data. When pre-service teachers' self-esteem scores were analyzed, it was observed that pre-service teachers both in Turkey and in Iran were above the moderate level. However, in terms of mean self-esteem scores, although it appeared that the mean scores of preservice teachers in Turkey were higher than the mean scores of pre-service teachers in Iran, it can be said that pre-service teachers' levels of self-esteem did not differ according to the culture they live in, in other words, they were at similar levels. According to the results of the study, it was determined that self-esteem scores were not significantly different according to both gender, grade level, perceived level of academic achievement and culture variables. This study offers a conceptual framework to investigate the role of financial and cultural factors on the understanding of corporate (social) responsibility (CR), and by applying this framework, aims to understand how cultural factors are affecting CR perception of Turkey. Since the impact of cultural factors is especially apparent on the smaller enterprises, the research focuses on SMEs in the manufacturing sector. In total, 15 semi-structured interviews with company representatives were conducted. The acquired data was analyzed with a descriptive analysis method. Results show that although participants were not aware of the extent of CR concept, a majority of them do have philanthropic activities, which are motivated predominantly by moral values. However, they show weak performances in terms of their environmental responsibility and stakeholder dialogue. These findings confirm that the CR perception of participant SMEs is compatible with Turkey's cultural characteristics. Therefore, cultural factors could play a key role for SMEs to embrace the essence of CR as somehow traditional and already existing, rather than considering this notion as 'imported' or 'new'. This research differs from existing literature in its qualitative methodology and conceptual framework, which scrutinizes financial and non-financial factors separately to reveal the CR perception of SMEs. This study investigates and compares online banking (OB) acceptance in the cultures of Pakistan and Turkey by employing the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) integrated with perceived credibility to predict customers' behavioral intentions (BI) and their usage of online banking. This study further investigates the moderation influence of five cultural dimensions on customers' usage behavior (UB). Using an online survey, data were collected through a questionnaire from 322 bank customers in Pakistan and 405 in Turkey. Structural equation modeling through Smart-PLS was used to analyze relationships among the constructs. Our analysis shows that performance expectancy (PE), hedonic motivation, habit (HT), and perceived credibility (PC) are determinants of OB acceptance in Pakistan, whereas PE, social influence, price value, HT, and PC are the factors affecting Turkish bank customer intentions. Results of the cultural moderators show that collectivism and long-term/short-term orientation affect customers' UB in Pakistan while uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and masculinity/femininity moderate the UB of Turkish customers. Introduction: Sleep is an important component of lifestyle. It affects the quality of life and translates into the effectiveness of activities during the day. Poor quality sleep can lead to physical, psychological and social disorders. Sleep is considered a sociological, anthropological and cultural phenomenon. The aim of this study was to compare the sleep quality of students from different countries. Methods: The study was conducted among 532 Polish, Turkish, Hungarian and Greek students, between December 2016 and March 2017. A diagnostic survey and a questionnaire technique were used. The link to the online questionnaire was sent to students via the Internet, or made available as a printed copy. Student opinions were measured using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: The data showed that the majority of students sleep well, but have sleepless nights due to study and social life, when they wake up sleepless and early. In-depth analysis showed a statistical significance between the studied components of students’ sleep and their country of origin: length and quality of sleep, falling asleep due to study and social life, feeling rested in the morning, and problems with waking up and falling back to sleep. Conclusions: Significant differences were found in the sleep patterns of students of different nationalities. Issues related to sleep and its problems should be discussed by organisations, as well as those responsible for constructing educational programmes and planning studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mindfulness has recently attracted more attention from service scholars due to its positive effect on various job outcomes. Yet, the linkage between mindfulness and service employees' creativity is still not well understood. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining how emotions might influence the mindfulness and creativity relationship from different cultural perspectives. Frontline service employees from three countries, the Philippines, Turkey, and the United States, were sampled to form a cross-border dataset. PLS multigroup results show that creativity positively influences service recovery performance and error reporting across the three nations. Furthermore, the mindfulness-creativity link is mediated by gratitude as a positive emotion in the United States, but by envy as a negative emotion in the Philippines and Turkey. This suggests that the link between mindfulness and creativity may be culturally contextual. These results might provide insights for mindfulness practices within the service work environment. Under what conditions do global scripts resonate among ordinary people? Neo-institutional world polity theory has tended to sideline this question by privileging macro-comparative explanations of states' adoption and social movement activists' framing of global scripts. Adopting a negative case approach, we draw on concepts from cultural sociology to explain why global scripts fail to resonate among ethno-religious minorities in Antakya, Turkey. Antakya has been exposed intensely to global minority rights and multiculturalism discourses; it has been targeted by various ethnic movement activists, and its diverse population has long experienced stigma and discrimination stemming from Turkey's model of nationhood. Yet, ordinary people there have seldom utilized global diversity scripts in their everyday struggles for recognition. Drawing on longitudinal qualitative fieldwork between 2004 and 2015, we find that global scripts fail to match people's cultural schemas of perceiving and reproducing boundaries—their local repertoires of diversity—due to a deep-seated ambivalence toward the category of "minority." This lack of resonance potentially weakens popular support for substantial policy reforms advancing minority rights and is one among several factors explaining why Turkey's turn from an exclusionary to an inclusionary model of nationhood has remained largely ceremonial. Place branding often builds upon gastro-cultural features. Yet, the convergence point between gastro-cultural place identity and the experience on offer could (and should) further benefit from contemporary studies in emerging fields, such as value co-creation and the identity-based approach to place branding. This study contributes towards this direction by examining the practices of relevant actors with main place branding authority. Drawing from their online information and presence, a thematic analysis of relevant brands in Greece and Turkey illustrates that operand and operant resource integration reflect the synergies developed between the gastronomic culture in, for, of the place. Further, actors' intention to co-create the brand influences and is influenced by the brand. Instructional communication research is critiqued for lacking theoretical development and limited cultural understanding. This study tested the instructional beliefs model (IBM) in three countries: US, Turkey, and Finland. Participants (N = 376) reported perceptions of teacher relevance, state motivation, procedural justice, learner empowerment, and revised learning indicators. Results revealed that the IBM provided a good fit to the data in Turkey and Finland but not in the US. In all models, procedural justice and state motivation were significant predictors of learner empowerment, and learner empowerment strongly predicted revised learning indicators. However, teacher relevance only predicted learner empowerment in non-US classrooms. Within the provision of education, teachers typically have the closest contact and play a key role in meeting the needs of refugee children through effective communication to achieve culturally qualified education and the provision of more humanistic approach. This descriptive cross‐sectional design study is aimed to explore the relationships among psychological resilience, intercultural sensitivity and empathetic tendency in teachers of Syrian refugee children in Turkey. Data were collected from 367 teachers of Syrian refugee children. Teachers of Syrian refugee children who participated in the study had a high level of psychological resilience, moderate level of empathic tendencies and a high level of intercultural sensitivity. Statistically significant relationships were found among study variables. The data reveal that there is a relationship among psychological resilience, intercultural sensitivity and empathetic tendency among teachers of Syrian refugee children in Turkey. The psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses, and subsequent increases in turnover, have been extensively documented. This article examines a profile of nurses which included (1) the degree to which direct-care nurses are caring for themselves, (2) the degree to which their manager acts in a caring way, (3) the degree to which nurses have clarity about their professional role and about how the system works, and (4) the degree to which nurses are satisfied with essential social and technical dimensions of their jobs, to help understand how some of the critical internal states and working relationships of nurses fit together as a model. To test the model, authors used structural equation modeling with a 35-item measurement tool in three countries (Russia, Serbia, and Turkey; n = 984), replicating a recent 8-country study. Results revealed a good model fit, similar to the original study, despite statistically significant differences in mean scores between the countries studied. Good model fit with a second group of countries, despite differences in mean scores, suggests that results from both studies can be used for a global conversation about how caring, clarity, and job satisfaction in nursing relate to one another. These results provide evidence that health facilities should study variables such as caring for self, caring by the unit or department manager, clarity of role and system, and job satisfaction to learn about, recover, and monitor nurses' health and experience of work as they emerge from the pandemic. The cultural imperialism thesis that emerged in late 20th century focused on inequalities in the West driven global flow of culture and communication, and how that adversely affected the cultural conditions of nations in the so called Third World. However, the core–periphery dynamic at the root of cultural imperialism has not merely been confined to the transnational level, from the West to the Rest. It has existed at the national level as well. Conducting a historical examination of state policy vis-à-vis Kurdish culture in Turkey, and drawing on the theories of cultural imperialism, internal colonialism and nationalism, I develop the concept of internal cultural imperialism to capture the state of severe center peripheral cultural imbalance that has been a product of Turkish nationalist ideology and its policies of cultural homogenization. This article examines the liminality of the revival of saint veneration between the sacred and secular in twentieth century Turkey. The museumization of saintly tombs and festivalization of saintly commemorations are components of an interactive process between secularizing policies and communal reclaiming of tradition. The processes of nation-building, secularization, and modernization that took place in Turkey deeply transformed the tradition of saint veneration. The most visible effect of this historical process was the transformation of prominent mausoleums into museums, like the mausoleums of Rumi in Konya, Haji Bektash Veli in Hacıbektaş, and Nasreddin Hodja in Akşehir. The secularist, modernist official culture reinvented prominent religious figures as rationalist and humanist national heroes and allowed people to visit their tombs in a secular environment as a part of the national cultural heritage. Large numbers of people gathering at festivals, commemorations, and other festal events contested the national narratives of "modern" identity offered to them at the state-controlled spaces and revived their traditions in novel and liminal ways. The state-induced rupture between the protective saint and people led the local populations to embrace the liminal space between the sacred and the secular by initiating ambiguous festive practices commemorating their principal saints. Background: Much research effort is focused on developing an effective vaccine for combatting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Vaccine development itself, however, will not be enough given that a sufficient amount of people will need to be vaccinated for widespread immunity. Vaccine hesitancy is on the rise, varies across countries, and is associated with conspiratorial worldview. Given the rise in COVID-19-related conspiracy theories, we aimed to examine the levels of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and its association with beliefs on the origin of the novel coronavirus in a cross-cultural study. Methods: We conducted an online survey in the UK (N = 1088) and Turkey (N = 3936), and gathered information on participants' willingness to vaccinate for a potential COVID-19 vaccine, beliefs on the origin of the novel coronavirus, and several behavioural and demographic predictors (such as anxiety, risk perception, government satisfaction levels) that influence vaccination and origin beliefs. Results: In all, 31% of the participants in Turkey and 14% in the UK were unsure about getting themselves vaccinated for a COVID-19 vaccine. In both countries, 3% of the participants rejected to be vaccinated. Also, 54% of the participants in Turkey and 63% in the UK believed in the natural origin of the novel coronavirus. Believing in the natural origin significantly increased the odds of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Conclusions: Our results point at a concerning level of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, especially in Turkey, and suggest that wider communication of the scientific consensus on the origin of the novel coronavirus with the public may help future campaigns targeting COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. • Female LFPR in Turkey has reached the turning point of the U-shaped pattern found elsewhere and has been rising since 2008. • The climb up the U has been aided by a weaking of the grip of the "culture" factor. • Supporting evidence comes from younger cohorts of women with lowest levels of educational attainment. • Age profiles show child-bearing related interruptions in rural areas and in the case of low-educated women in urban areas. • Use of a single APC decomposition can be misleading when linear trends in the cross-section age profiles evolve over time. • An evolving trend in the age profile shows up as trends in period or cohort components of different APC models. • The linear APC models we use are consistent in recovering the turning points of the age, period, and cohort profiles. We study the aggregate labor force participation behavior of women over a 25-year period in Turkey using a synthetic panel approach. In our decomposition of age, year, and cohort effects, we use three APC models that have received close scrutiny of the demography community. The exercise is repeated by rural/urban status and by education to tease out some key differences in behavior. Our comparative methodology yields remarkably consistent profiles for most subsamples, but not all. Notably all methods reveal an M-shaped age profile attributable to child-bearing related interruptions in rural areas and for low-educated women in urban areas. We also find that younger cohorts among the least-educated women are more likely to participate, contrary to the belief that culture stands in the way. The evidence we compiled confirms that Turkey has reached the turning point of the U-shaped pattern in female labor force participation observed in countries where agriculture initially accounts for a large fraction of employment. We dwell on methodological issues throughout the paper and seek explanations for the occasional fragility of the methods. We establish that evolution of the linear trend present in the cross-section age profiles is responsible for the differences in the findings. Purpose: In spite of its potential benefits in a wide range of situations, supply chain risk mitigation strategies have received scant attention on the subject of managing the supply chain risk in the business environment. Especially, there is still a limited understanding of the importance of firms' supply chain flexibility, resilience and responsiveness in the supply chain risk management (SCRM) literature. This research focuses on exploring the relationship between significant proactive risk mitigation strategies, namely supply chain (SC) flexibility, resilience and responsiveness, as well as SCRM performance to facilitate bridging the gap between mitigation strategies and SCRM performance. The moderating role of risk management (RM) culture was also hypothesized and tested. Design/methodology/approach: A survey-based methodology is adopted. The data are analyzed using the technique of partial least squares. Findings: The results indicate that SC resilience and responsiveness are positively associated with SCRM performance; however, SC flexibility does not. In addition, interestingly, RM culture does not moderate these relationships in spite of the extant literature. We argue that this could be due to the fact that risk management culture is at the beginning stage for an enterprise in Turkey. Originality/value: This study extends the existing literature by advancing the knowledge on the relationship between proactive risk management strategies, which applied to overcome uncertainties and SCRM performance.
