This paper presents an in-depth research analysis on the evaluation of the development quality of regional economy through an improved convolutional neural network algorithm, and uses it to design a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model for the practical process. Based on the measured indices of different variables, a spatial econometric model is constructed and provincial panel data are selected to empirically analyze the impact and spatial spillover effects of financial agglomeration and technological innovation on regional economic quality development from both static and dynamic aspects and to examine the spatial correlation of the factors. A new serial data flow model is adopted, which optimizes the control of data flow in convolutional computation, reduces the percentage of clock cycles used to read memory data, and increases the computational efficiency. At the same time, with dynamic data caching, a convolutional computation can be completed in one clock cycle, reducing the memory capacity required for caching intermediate data. The effectiveness of the evaluation system constructed in this paper is further tested. Most of the indicators have a significant positive or negative impact on the quality level of economic development, and the direction of the impact is consistent with the positive and negative attributes of the indicators in this study, which verifies the validity of the evaluation indicator system constructed in this paper. In summary of the study, effective suggestions are made in terms of human capital investment, reasonable allocation of fiscal expenditure, enhancing regional greening development and improving risk prevention measures. The economic and technological development zone (ETDZ) serves an essential role in driving green development and ecological civilization. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the impact of ETDZs on eco-efficiency for sustainable development. This paper investigates the impact of the establishment of ETDZs on eco-efficiency by constructing a differences-in-differences (DID) model on the basis of 253 cities in China from 2004 to 2017 as the dataset. This paper also explores the possible intrinsic impact mechanisms through the channels of industrial structure and technological innovation by constructing a mediating effect model, and the heterogeneous effects of ETDZs on eco-efficiency from the perspectives of regional imbalance and city class heterogeneity. Statistical results report that ETDZs significantly positively affect eco-efficiency and such effects are most significant in the first year after the establishment of ETDZs. Industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation are essential role mechanisms for ETDZs to enhance eco-efficiency. Besides, the enhancement effect of ETDZs on eco-efficiency is only observed in the eastern part of the city, with an insignificant inhibitory effect in central and western parts of the cities. The establishment of the green belt and road is an inevitable choice to conform to and lead the green and low-carbon cycle development and an inherent requirement for sustainable development. Therefore, we establish an evaluation system of green development oriented to carbon neutrality, and calculate the green development level (GDL) of the provinces along the belt and road in China from 2003 to 2018 by using a three-dimensional evaluation model. In addition, this paper employs the Obstacle Degree Model to identify the main obstacle factors that affect GDL, and provides targeted and differentiated countermeasures and suggestions for improving the regional GDL. Our results suggested that the overall GDL has improved, but not obvious, with a low level. The GDL and coordination degree between different regions exist certain differences, and its spatial pattern is characterized by "high in southeast and northeast, low in southwest and northwest". From a regional perspective, innovation capacity is the key factor that affects the green development of the region in southeast, northeast, northwest and southwest China. Driving economic green transformation and promoting industrial energy conservation and emission reduction through technological innovation are the internal driving forces to achieve regional green sustainable development. There is a relative dearth of empirical studies quantitatively analyzing the implementation effect of green finance reform and innovation pilot zones (GFRIs) on green innovation at the micro-enterprise level. Thus, this paper aims to construct the difference-in-difference-in-difference method to explore the influence of Chinese GFRIs on corporate green innovation of heavy-polluting enterprises based on green patent data. Results show that the pilot policy has significantly decreased green patents of heavy-polluting enterprises by approximately 42.64%, indicating that the policy has a significant innovation inhibition effect and fails to exert the Porter effect. Furthermore, establishing GFRIs has a more effective inhibition effect on the green invention patent than the green utility model patent. Moreover, although enterprises of different scales have different innovation capabilities, the negative impact of GFRIs on green innovation of heavy-polluting enterprises is widespread. Still, the negative impact is more pronounced for big-scale enterprises. In order to further explore the internal transmission mechanism between technological innovation and green development in manufacturing industry under the background of obvious development characteristics in the new era, this paper constructed an integrated methodology system to evaluate the internal impact mechanism of technological innovation value chain efficiency on green development efficiency based on spatial perspective. First, the Network Slack-based model and Global Malmquist-Luenberger model are constructed to reveal the internal development law of technological innovation and green development of manufacturing industry. Secondly, the spatial Dubin model is employed to analyze the impact of current development characteristics and technological innovation on green development. The results show that innovation value chain efficiency is higher than technological innovation efficiency, and economic transformation efficiency is lower than that of technological innovation value chain. During the study period, the efficiency of technological innovation value chain in the four economic regions present fluctuant growth trend, and the eastern region has the highest value. The green development efficiency in the east, central, west, and northeast regions of manufacturing industry is higher than 1, and it shows an obvious spatial agglomeration effect. Besides, the efficiency of technological innovation, information and communication technology, urbanization, and the advanced industrial structure are all conducive to the improvement of green development in manufacturing industry. This paper studies the influence mechanism of technological innovation value chain efficiency on green development based on spatial perspective and puts forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions to effectively promote green development of manufacturing industry, providing relevant theoretical research for green and high-quality development. Accelerating industrial green transformation (IGT) is the intrinsic requirement of realizing low-carbon and green economic development. Inward Foreign Direct Investment (IFDI) and Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) are the main channels of international technology spillover. Whether the coordination of IFDI and OFDI (CIO) can promote IGT and what role the Chinese government's innovation support plays need to be investigated. Using China's provincial panel data from 2003 to 2019, this paper discusses the impact of CIO on IGT and the moderating effect of government's innovation support. It is found that the CIO can significantly promote the IGT. Government providing R&D funds directly can enhance the promotion of CIO to IGT. However, government releasing innovation signal indirectly shows a significant negative impact on the promotion of CIO to IGT. In addition, the impact of CIO on IGT and the moderating effect of government's innovation support are heterogeneous significantly among different regions. This study not only helps to clarify the relationship between CIO and IGT but also provides enlightenment for government to scientifically formulate innovation policies to achieve green economic development. As a new financial model that balances economic and ecological benefits, green finance (GF) plays an important role in promoting green economic development and ecological environmental protection. Based on the panel data set of 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2020, this paper uses the synthetic control method (SCM) to explore the impact of the green financial reform pilot policy (GFRP) on the green technology innovation (GTI) capabilities of pilot areas and evaluate the policy effects. The specific research conclusions are as follows: (1) On the whole, the GFRP has a positive role in promoting the GTI capability of the pilot areas, but this role is different due to the different resources, environment, and economic development levels of each region. The areas with economic development levels in the middle and head are obviously affected by the policy, and the less developed areas are less affected by the policy or even have a restraining effect. (2) Although the pilot policy has improved the GTI capability of the pilot area, the promotion effect is unstable, that is, the implementation effect of the policy is unstable. In the early stage of policy implementation, the promotion effect of the policy on the regional GTI capacity is the most obvious, and this promotion effect begins to show a downward or stable trend in the 2–3 years after the policy is implemented. In response to the 14th National Five-year Plan of China and to better explore new strategies for promoting regional coordinated green development, the eco-efficiency values of Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle and the corresponding temporal analysis from 2004 to 2018 were assessed in this paper using the super-SBM model and Markov chain. Meanwhile, the spatial analysis of eco-efficiency was conducted by a geographically weighted regression model. Although eco-efficiency has risen at an increasing rate, the economic development of Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle was still ecologically ineffective. This means there is an urgent need to improve the efficiency of resource utilization and promote technological innovation. During the study period, the evolution of the eco-efficiency presented as a "π" shape, and was accompanied by the phenomenon of "club convergence". There was also a strong tendency for eco-efficiency to maintain the original status quo, which indicates that it lacked sufficient momentum for improvement, so it was difficult to achieve a leapfrog transfer. Spatially, the eco-efficiency was distributed from northwest to southeast in a high-low-high manner. The spatial-temporal differences of eco-efficiency narrowed but the effect of agglomeration was relatively weak and there was a polarization trend. Further investigation suggests that the differences in the development level of urbanization, opening, technology, environmental regulation and advancement of industrial structure led to the spatial differences of eco-efficiency. Each city in the Economic Circle should make every effort to improve eco-efficiency accordingly, and thus to promote the green development of the whole region, so as to lay a foundation for driving the green and coordinated development of the central and western regions. Green technology innovation is the basic driving force of green economic development. The compatibility of the composite system composed of green technology innovation, green finance, and environmental regulation is the decisive factor of whether regional economy can achieve sustainable development. Based on the data of regional green technology innovation in China from 2012 to 2020, this paper discusses the coupling coordination mechanism and coupling coordination level among green technology innovation, green finance, and environmental regulation based on entropy method. It is found that the coupling and coordinated development of regional green technology innovation-green finance-environmental regulation system in China is above medium level. However, there is a big gap in the coupling coordination level among different regions. The coupling coordination level in eastern China is relatively high, and the coupling coordination level in other regions is deviated. Most regions of China have a great potential for improvement. On this basis, this paper puts forward policy suggestions for improving the overall coupling and coordination level of the system to promote national green development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

African countries seek to intensify their industrialization while also increasingly pursuing green growth and, more recently, circular economy strategies. The competitive implications of this are, however, little researched empirically. We seek to investigate how African countries, examplified in this paper by Kenya, are experiencing a green and circular structural change of their economies. On the basis of early findings from a survey among 27 mixed manufacturing companies in Ruaraka industrial area in Nairobi, we highlight green and circular innovation trends, conditions and dynamics for different types of industries and firms (size). We apply a strong business perspective in framing the questions. We conclude that the companies are reaching a moderate stage of greening,although with a high degree of variability. Circular innovations are relatively widespread and ensuring resource supply seems to be a more important incentive than cutting costs. There seems overall to be quite strong business incentives to go circular among Kenyan companies, although these incentives are not necessarily realized by the companies, a factor that could be utilized in policymaking. We suggest a strong business-oriented survey methodology as a way forward to expand insights into the greening of industries in Africa and similar economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China's environmental governance exhibits a significant imbalance with its economic development. To enhance the "green" and sustainable practices of enterprises, employing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles is imperative. The literature examining the correlation between ESG and green innovation (GI) lacks detailed clarity and obscures the different effects of each dimension. Inefficient resource allocation may also result from ignoring the distinct implementation costs associated with each dimension of ESG. Such problems eventually hinder the guidance of corporate practices. Therefore, the promoting or inhibiting effects stemming from each of these dimensions warrant further study. In this paper, we use data from A‐share listed companies in China for the years 2004 to 2020 to investigate the mechanism that links the E, S, and G dimensions of ESG with GI from an externality perspective. We prove a linear or U‐shaped relationship between the E or S dimension and GI, and we explore the mediating effect of financing constraints on these relationships. We compare these dimensions under a unified theoretical framework to clarify their differences in externality and internality. This study's results highlight the importance for enterprises to emphasise environmental issues and social recognition, instead of just corporate operations, to achieve sustainable development. A high‐quality green transition is essential to achieving sustainable and coordinated global development. In this paper, a new method of two‐step geometric average is proposed to measure green transition, and a comprehensive framework on the relationship between sustainability and coordination via the propelling force of green transition is constructed at both the national and provincial levels. In addition, the mediating effect model and the threshold model are employed to empirically verify the mechanisms and influences. According to the results, green transition can contribute to regional economic growth at national level and to the coordinated development of regional economies at provincial level in China. Meanwhile, the non‐linear 'U‐shaped' relationships between green transition and regional economy are demonstrated in Asia and the eastern region of China, and spillover effect of technological innovation can indirectly promote regional development. In addition, the heterogeneity effect of green transition fully releases the dividend of economic quality and environmental governance capacity, promoting the coordinated development of regional economies. In the meantime, the driving force of green transition on regional economy is dependent on the external environment, particularly before and after the outbreak of COVID‐19, when its impact has altered substantially. Therefore, it is necessary to promote green transition via greater technological innovation efficiency, and then to restore the vitality of regional economic development; which could provide policy makers and professionals in the regional economy with information for enhancing sustainable and coordinated development. During recent decades, culture is gaining more and more attention as a factor that determines economic outcomes. Trying to investigate its role on innovation and economic development, this paper uses a dataset that offers the potential for a cross-sectional and time series analysis. Thus, in this paper, the effects of culture on innovation (as measured by patent applications, spending on R&D, number or researchers per 1000 individuals and number of government researchers) and economic development are investigated. Cultural background is captured through the Schwartz's cultural values, as reported through the European Social Survey (ESS) waves during the period 2002–2018. The dataset is comprised by 18 Eurozone countries. Using principal component analyses to capture the Schwartz's cultural values, as well as two ways fixed-effects analysis (FE), time dummies for each ESS wave included in the analysis and cluster—robust estimates of the standard errors, in order to examine the above relationships, the main conclusions derived from the analysis are that (a) there is significant effect of culture on innovation and economic development, and (b) the main cultural dimensions that hinder innovation and economic development are the prevalence of hierarchy, affective autonomy, and mastery. These results hold for all different dependent variables used in the analysis. Thus, when hierarchy, affective autonomy, and mastery are present innovation and economic development are hindered, leading to obstacles regarding the sustainability of economic outcomes. China's extensive economic growth has been accompanied with high levels of pollution, and excessive energy consumption has brought serious pollution problems. The use of financial resources to regulate green production modes and encourage high‐quality economic development has become a major focus in academia. At the same time, growth enterprise market (GEM) enterprises, which mainly operate in technology‐intensive industries, are assumed to have a simulating effect on regional innovation. Therefore, this paper utilizes the capital return differences of 4437 listed companies and 920 GEM companies based in 30 provinces of China from 2008 to 2018 to quantitatively analyze the levels of financial misallocation. With two‐stage regression method, the direct effect of financial misallocation on regional green total factor energy efficiency (GTFEE) and the indirect impact observed when taking regional innovation as an intermediary variable are discussed. Furthermore, dynamic threshold panel regression and heterogeneity analysis are used to verify the above nonlinear relationship. The empirical findings indicate that financial misallocation enhances innovation capability and further restrains GTFEE. With an improved degree of marketization and environmental regulation, the inhibitory effect of financial misallocation on GTFEE is more significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the new era, China's economic development is in the offensive period of transforming the development mode, green development is an inevitable requirement to accelerate the transformation of economic development mode and optimize the industrial structure, and we should adhere to the concept of ecological priority and green development to promote high-quality economic development. The 19th Party Congress clearly proposed to "promote green development, establish a sound economic system of green low-carbon cycle development, and build a market-oriented green technology innovation system." Green technology is the technology to save resources, reduce pollution, and achieve sustainable development. Green technology innovation continues to promote green development, which will become an important support to promote the progress of ecological civilization, adhere to pollution prevention and control, and promote high-quality development. Promoting green technology innovation, taking the road of sustainable development, enhancing the awareness of environmental protection, and promoting high-quality economic development are also inevitable choices to promote the conversion of economic development mode. Carrying out research on the impact of green technological innovation on regional economic growth is of great significance to alleviate the shortage of innovation resources in China, guide enterprises to change to a green way of development, and promote the sustainable development of China's economy and population, resources, and environment. This paper provides publicly available data from 2015-2021, takes fixed asset investment as the variable, introduces control variables, and analyzes the relationship between technological innovation and economic growth using fixed-effects model and intermediate-effects model. The results show that innovation contributes significantly to regional economic growth and is influenced by the mediating role of fixed asset investment. In order to boost China's economic growth, specific policy recommendations are proposed in terms of optimizing the regional innovation layout, improving the intellectual property rights system, cultivating high-quality talents, optimizing the structure of fixed assets, and attracting the inflow of foreign capital. The role of financial inclusion along with environment related technological innovation has been ignored by previous studies, especially, in terms of tradeadjusted carbon emissions. Unlike previous studies, this study aims to test the role of financial inclusion and eco-innovation on trade-adjusted carbon emissions or consumption-based carbon emissions for a group of seven economies over the period 2004-2019. Further, this study also tests the role of exports, imports and gross domestic product. We develop an index using principal component analysis to measure financial inclusion. The study utilizes the novel method of moment quantile regression to obtain the results. The results indicate that eco-innovation reduces consumption-based carbon emissions at 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th quantiles, respectively. Moreover, financial inclusion and exports also reduce emissions at 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th quantiles. In contrast, gross domestic product and imports cause trade-adjusted emissions to increase. Moreover, a bidirectional link is established between all variables except for financial inclusion. Finally, this study provides relevant policy implications for trade, eco-innovation, and financial inclusion in the group of seven economies for sustainable trade development. The coordination of green economy, education development, and technological innovation is of great significance for reversing the trend of ecological environmental deterioration and promoting high-quality economic development. This study first designs the indicator system of green economy, education development, and technological innovation, then uses the entropy method to calculate the comprehensive level of green economy, education development, and technological innovation of 30 provinces and cities in China, and finally uses the coupling coordination model to measure the coordination level among them. The research shows that, first, the comprehensive level of green economy, education development, and technological innovation in 30 provinces and cities in China showed a rising trend from 2005 to 2016, but there were some regional differences in their levels. Second, the coordination level of green economy, education development, and technological innovation in different regions of China was in a rising trend from 2005 to 2016, but in 2005, they were extremely uncoordinated. Also, the coordination level of green economy, education development, and technological innovation in most regions of China grew very slowly from 2005 to 2010 but showed a rapid increase from 2011 to 2016. The coordination level of green economy, education development, and technological innovation in eastern China was visibly higher than that of the central region. The coordination level of the central region was higher than that of the northeast region, and the coordination level of the northeast region was higher than that of the western region. In the digital era, digitalization brings great opportunities and challenges for cities' environmental governance and economic growth. However, it is worth noting that the impact of digitalization on cities' green transition has not been studied from the perspective of Metcalfe's Law. This paper uses the principal component method and non-radial directional distance function (NDDF) to calculate the digital development level and the green economic performance of 269 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2019. (1) The empirical findings demonstrate that digitalization has become a strong driver for cities' green economic transformation. (2) Digitalization indirectly promotes green transition through industrial structure optimization and green technological innovation. (3) The heterogeneity results show that the positive effect of digitalization on green development is more obvious in eastern and economically developed cities. (4) Using the partially linear functional-coefficient model (PLFC), this paper studies the non-linear nexus between digitalization and green economic transition from the perspective of Metcalfe's Law. Thus, Metcalfe's law is confirmed in the green transition of Chinese cities. Technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading have become two strategic initiatives to realize a green economic development in the new development model of China. Exploring the relationship between green economic efficiency and the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading is essential to achieve the visionary goal of green economic development and socialist modernization. This paper measures the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading, classifies the coupling types based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2012-2019, and measures the green economic efficiency of 30 provinces in China using the super-efficient model (SBM), based on a spatial econometric model to study the relationship between green economic efficiency and the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading. The research results show that there is a significant positive effect on green economic efficiency among regions; the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading has a significant direct effect and a spatial spillover effect on green economic efficiency, the spatial spillover effect plays a major role. The heterogeneity analysis reveals that in the regions with higher development and coordination degrees of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading, the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading has a significant effect on the green economic efficiency of the region, and in the regions with lower development and coordination degrees of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading, the coupling degree of technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading has a significant positive effect on the green economic efficiency of the region and neighboring areas. In order to analyze the difference between the development and performance of export-oriented green innovation economy in coastal cities, this paper puts forward a correlation analysis model of green innovation economy development and performance under the coastal city export-oriented economic model based on Taylor index analysis and green innovation economy development effectiveness game. The Taier index mapping model is established to analyze the constraint index of the development of green innovation economy, and the financing constraint parameter model which affects the development of export-oriented green innovation in coastal cities is constructed. Taking the development efficiency and financing mode of green innovation economy as the explanatory variables, the development model of green innovation economy is constructed. The principal component game method is used to calculate the export-oriented green innovation development index of small and medium-sized coastal cities, to extract the index variables such as the growth rate of total assets, the operating profit margin and the physical property of enterprise assets for balanced game. By using the financial audit data and asset panel distribution data to analyze the Taylor index, the differences between the development and performance of the export-oriented green innovation economy in coastal cities can be quantitatively evaluated. The empirical analysis shows that the model has a good robustness in the development and performance evaluation of green innovation economy, and the effectiveness of decision-making on the development of export-oriented green innovation economy in coastal cities has been improved at different levels of significance. Green development prioritizes ecology and sustainability and strengthens scientific and technological innovation to drive high-quality economic development. This paper constructs a coupled coordination model of a system evaluation index to explore the spatial and temporal pattern of green technology innovation and high-quality economic development. it also employs a Tobit regression model to analyse the influencing factors of coordinated development further. For this purpose, panel data on 30 Chinese provincial administrative regions were selected, ranging from 2010 to 2019. The results indicate that the level of coupling and coordination of green technology innovation with high-quality economic quality shows a steady upward trend and the evolution trend of "basic, moderate, and high coordination". At the same time, differences in coordinated development between regions are obvious, showing a development trend of "high in the east and low in the west". It is affected positively by the industrial structure, urbanization level, economic development level, R&D investment, foreign investment and education investment. Information and Communication Technologies such as blockchain can significantly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Global South (GS). Grounded in the innovation forecasting literature, this paper explores blockchain-based innovations and research in the context of economic and sustainable development to answer the following research questions: what is the status quo of blockchain innovations and research in the Global South?; and further, how can blockchain innovations contribute to economic and sustainable development? We follow a mixed-method approach based on web mining and topic modeling with unstructured empirical data on blockchain innovators from Crunchbase, their websites, and academic publications to address these research questions. Our results indicate that blockchain innovators already engage in various application areas beyond the financial sector, addressing critical development issues. However, the empirical data on blockchain research and innovations suggests a largely untapped potential in various promising application areas relevant for the SDGs, such as sustainable energy or integrity verification. Innovation has been and continues to be recognised as central to promoting and supporting sustainable economic development; as such, South Africa has set the goal of becoming a knowledge economy. This is an economy that succeeds in producing knowledge and transforming itself into a technology-based from a resource-based economy that will stimulate growth and development of the country, while creating sustainable employment opportunities. The two key policies designed to drive strategic economic development in South Africa are the Innovation Policy and the Industrial Policy. This article considers the role of technology commercialisation strategy and how it can be utilised as a model for cooperation and collaboration to ensure achievement of the objectives of the innovation and industrial policies and present a homogeneous approach to policy implementation. The data was collected through a field survey of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME s) which are technological oriented. Additional information was gathered through an in-depth, semi-structured interviews with selected stakeholders within the innovation landscape. The research findings confirm that commercialisation is the most significant and critical step of the innovation value chain, supported by collaboration and linkages of the innovation system players and it requires effective co-operation from both public and private entities. Successful technology commercialisation justifies efforts, funds and time committed to research and development and it propels enterprise development, spurs industrialisation, enhances enterprise technological capability, efficiency and competitiveness, create investment opportunities, and make research more demand driven. Supply chains are getting more and more complex with addition of new sustainability paradigms in highly fragile and vulnerable environments as the world is transforming faster and faster due to the acceleration of activities, operations and new technologies. To date, few efforts have been made to systematically explore the status of sustainable supply chains networks models as a few research includes sustainable development as a main attribute of the problem considered. This review is the outcome of several papers under the year frame from 2010 to 2021 delivering the role of sustainability in supply chain network with identification of strategies and various methodologies used by the academicians. A new framework of sustainable supply chain network design dimensions with inclusion of indicators and the parameters have been introduced. Moreover, future paths and research directions are provided for researchers and practitioners to explore the concepts of sustainability and new avenues of research to include sustainability aspects more effectively. This study addresses the impact of financial structure on innovation. The mechanism of the impact of financial structure on innovation at different levels of economic development is elucidated from the perspective of optimal financial structure decision theory and development economics, and empirical evidence is provided using manufacturing data from 59 countries or regions for the period 1996–2015. The study finds that financial structure has no significant effect on innovation at lower levels of economic development, but at higher levels of economic development, market-based financial structure significantly promotes innovation in the industry. The role of financial structure in innovation shifts in the interval where per capita income is greater than 9747 International dollar (hereinafter called I$9747) and less than I$17070. This paper verifies that the innovation approach of technological imitation requires the support of a bank-based financial structure, while the innovation approach of independent innovation requires the support of a market-based financial structure. The differences in innovation approaches at different stages of economic development lead to the evolution of the inherent demand for financial structures in the economy. Promoting the evolution of financial structures according to the stage of economic development is of great significance in building an innovative country and leading the sustainable and healthy development of the economy. • The paper examines how the agri-food system is currently responding to the grand challenges of sustainability. • It reviews the literature related to sustainability-oriented innovation to identify ways in which the agri-food system could better respond to grand challenges in the future. • It highlights the key contributions of the seven articles in the special issue. • It draws three potential avenues for future research. The agri-food system features prominently in discussions about sustainable development because of its broad economic, social, and environmental impacts. To examine how the agri-food system is responding – and can respond – to the grand challenges of sustainability, we position this Special Issue (SI) within the stream of sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) literature, and in relation to the much-cited framework provided by Adams et al. (2016). This introductory article contains an overview of the selected papers, described by using the above-mentioned framework and by highlighting the contributions that these articles bring to fill current knowledge gaps in the field. Such knowledge gaps have been identified by investigating SOI links to sustainability and circular economy concepts and by studying how SOI relates to development in the agri-food system. The contributions to this SI explore different facets of the research agenda we have laid out and covers the range of SOI proposed by Adams et al. Purpose - The goal of the research was to test a general assumption about culture contribution to sustainable development via the relationship between culture-related indices and the achievement of specific sustainable development goals. Research methodology - Linear regression analysis along with robustness testing was used to test research hypotheses. The data set is represented by 19 explanatory variables and 2 dependent variables, which are proxies for sustainable developments goals Decent Work and Economic Growth and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - Innovation index and Global competitiveness index. The data were collected from 27 European countries for the period 2011-2020. Findings - Statistical analysis revealed relationship between sustainable development indices and culture development of European countries. Decent Work and Economic Growth demonstrated more significant relationship to cultural development than the Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Development. Research limitations - The findings are limited by the fact that some variables were missing. Practical implications - The outcomes of the research allow to define the structure of relationship between sustainable development goals and cultural development indicators. Originality/Value - The research results have indicated that the achievement of sustainable development goals Decent Work and Economic Growth and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Development are affected by the level of cultural development. Whether financial agglomeration is conducive to eco-efficiency is of great importance for countries to better pursue cleaner production, low carbon emission reduction, and sustainable development paths. This paper focuses on 38 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) members. Based on the scientific accounting of green eco-efficiency by the super-efficiency slack-based measure (SBM) model, the relationship between financial agglomeration and eco-efficiency is thoroughly investigated by combining the spatial Durbin model (SDM), the mediating effects model, and the panel threshold regression (PTR) model, bridging the knowledge gap. Empirical results reveal that (1) Financial agglomeration has strong positive externalities for eco-efficiency in the home country and its neighbors, with the trickle-down effect playing a key role. (2) Financial agglomeration can indirectly promote cleaner production and eco-efficiency by strengthening technological innovation and upgrading industrial structure, with the latter being more strongly mediated. (3) The effect of financial agglomeration in enhancing eco-efficiency has clear stage differences. The low-level financial agglomeration will impede the improvement of green eco-efficiency while the high-level will support it, which is in line with the Environmental Kuznets Curve theory and the law of economic development. The research broadens the theoretical underpinnings of financial agglomeration and eco-efficiency and provides guidance and implications for OECD members and other emerging economies on how to optimize the spatial allocation of financial resources, promote eco-efficiency, and advance green sustainable development. Under the strategy of "Digital China" and "Sustainable Development," the synergistic development of digital economy and green economy has become a crucial topic. Based on the panel data of 13 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region from 2011 to 2019, this study investigates the direct effect, intrinsic mechanism, and spatial spillover effect of digital technology development (DTD) on urban green development efficiency (GDE). The empirical results show that (1) DTD significantly improves urban GDE in the BTH region, and it passes the endogeneity test, (2) DTD can enhance urban GDE by improving the environmental regulation intensity and technological innovation level in the BTH region; however, the industrial structure optimization weakens the promotion effect of DTD on urban GDE in the BTH region, which shows a "masking effect," (3) the kernel density estimation method and ArcGIS technology reveal the existence of "digital divide" and GDE differences among cities in the BTH region. Moreover, the spatial distribution pattern of DTD gradually forms "H–H" and "L-L" clusters in the BTH region, and (4) DTD also increases the GDE of neighboring cities through spatial spillover effects in the BTH region, and it passes the robustness test of replacing the spatial weight matrix. Green innovation activities of enterprises often fall into the dilemma of financing constraints. Hence, it is urgent that the financial system develops and becomes innovative, especially for a developing country like China. Existing literature mainly explores the influencing factors of green innovation from the environmental regulation, economic growth and government subsidies perspective. However, few papers critically study how digital finance influences green innovations. To explore the internal influencing mechanism of digital finance on the quantity and quality of green technology innovation, panel data of 271 prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2019 in China is used. Based on theoretical analysis and empirical research, we get the following conclusions. First, digital finance can improve the quantity and quality of green technological innovation, which has become a significant driving force for green innovations in China. The results are still robust after the endogeneity tests. Second, the results of heterogeneous analysis indicate that the different dimensions of digital finance can improve green innovations. They include breadth of coverage, depth of use, and degree of digitization. The positive effect of digital finance is most substantial in eastern cities, followed by central cities, and weakest in western cities. Third, digital finance indirectly improves green innovation mainly by alleviating financing constraints. Exploring the transformation of the mode of economic growth has been widely concerned by researchers around the world, especially in the context of "dual carbon" goals. China's economy is in a transition stage to high-quality green development (HGD), with technological innovation (TI) and emerging industrial agglomeration (EIA) as important drivers. However, existing studies lack a systematic empirical analysis on different dimensions of TI and its influence mechanism. In order to examine the mechanism of TI affecting HGD through EIA, this study uses the panel data in the western Yangtze River Delta of China from 2009 to 2019 to first comprehensively calculate the TI index, EIA index, and the HGD index as proxy variables for regional TI, EIA, and HGD, respectively, and then empirically examines the impact of TI on HGD and the heterogeneous impacts on HGD. Finally, we test the mediation effect of EIA between TI and HGD. The results show that TI effectively promotes regional HGD, and with the increase in the HGD index, the driving role of TI also increases. Technological innovation has heterogeneous impacts on HGD at different dimensions of innovation, time periods, and regions. Innovation output and diffusion have significant impacts on HGD, whereas innovation input and environment have insignificant impacts. The effects of TI promoting HGD are different before and after 2013. Additionally, the nexus between TI and HGD also differs across spatial distributions. The mediation effect indicates that EIA is an important mechanism for TI to release the dividends of HGD, and it explains approximately 29% of the conduction effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a new generation of information technology, the Internet of Things technology has a very broad development prospect. It can not only cultivate strategic emerging industries, but also transform and upgrade traditional industries and promote the transformation of economic development mode. Industrial transformation and upgrading is a strategic choice for high-quality development of resource-based cities. As one of the first national demonstration areas for industrial transformation and upgrading, Loudi has made good progress in industrial transformation and upgrading in recent years, with more reasonable industrial structure, gradually emerging industrial upgrading effect, optimized internal structure of industry, and the trend of green development of the industry. At present, the industrial transformation and upgrading of Loudi is hampered by the local government, enterprises, and talents, and the technological innovation is obviously insufficient. The main bottlenecks are that low fiscal revenue and less fiscal expenditure of science and technology lead to insufficient services and guidance for industrial transformation and upgrading by local governments, low R&D investment and less scientific and technological innovation results lead to weak innovation momentum for enterprises to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, low human capital reserve and low consumption potential lead to a weak fundamental guarantee for industrial transformation and upgrading driven by human capital. The suggestions are to increase financial investment in science and technology, set up local government guidance fund, play the role of financial capital in the industrial transformation and upgrading of traction and leverage guidance, guide enterprises to increase their investment in R&D, create a favorable environment for scientific and technological innovation, and strengthen the main role of enterprises in innovation in industrial transformation and upgrading, strengthen the introduction of innovative and highly skilled personnel, take a variety of measures to reform the mechanism for training innovative personnel, and ensure the fundamental guarantee for talents in industrial transformation and upgrading. The blue economy is the development of sustainable economic growth preserving the marine ecosystem. The concept of a blue economy emerged after the UN Rio+20 conference held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. South Asian maritime nations are facing serious economic problems. They all have excessive oceanic resources and different maritime economy sectors like shipping, coastal tourism, fishing, etc. This research explores the challenges which are associated with these maritime economy sectors of South Asian littoral states. This study also intends to find out the possible options available to earn more through the maritime sectors to improve their current social and economic conditions. A case study design has been used in this research. Interviews have been conducted from maritime experts for this case study. India is the largest South Asian country in terms of population and technological advancements. It is investing a lot in the tourism and shipping sector to become a strong blue nation. Pakistan's blue economy sectors have vast potential, but there is a need to formulate favorable policies and considerable investments to utilize all these resources. Bangladesh is putting positive efforts toward sustainable development in the coastal tourism, fishing, and shipping sectors. Maldives is famous for the best beaches and tourist destinations. Sri Lanka's maritime economy sectors have faced many ups and downs, which affected her blue economy growth. This research concludes that the future of maritime South Asian states is related to the development of the blue economy. We are entering an unprecedented phase of innovation. The green growth opportunities are at the forefront and occur at a rapid pace. We work with climate-focused innovators, from pre-funded start-ups and unicorns to entrepreneurial operators. In order to implement the policies associated with the green economy and the sustainable development (Stiglitz, 2010), it is necessary to have, first of all, a joint effort of all countries, campaigns to raise the awareness of the importance of this phenomenon, as well as to provide timely and applicable solutions. The green economy involves using natural resources, energy and new technologies alongside clean production methods in order to foster economic growth and create new jobs. This concept calls for the creation of new sustainable consumption and production models that do not push the ecosystem to its limits. It is clear that the transition to a green and circular economy will benefit some groups and sectors and put pressure on others. The Southeast Asian countries have experienced significant degrees of economic growth over the years but have not managed to safeguard their environmental attributes in tandem. As a result, the aggravation of the environmental indicators across this region casts a shadow of doubt on the sustainability of the economic growth achievements of the Southeast Asian countries. Against this milieu, this study specifically explores the influence of renewable electricity generation capacity, technological innovation, financial development, and economic growth on the ecological footprints in five Southeast Asian countries namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam during the period 1985–2016. One of the major novelties of this study is in terms of its approach to assess the renewable energy use-ecological footprint nexus using the renewable electricity generation capacity as an indicator of renewable energy use in the selected Southeast Asian nations. The econometric analysis involves methods that are robust to handling cross-sectional dependency and slope heterogeneity issues in the data. Accordingly, the recently developed Cross-sectional Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag estimator is used to predict the short- and long-run impacts on ecological footprints. The major findings suggest that higher renewable electricity generation capacity and technological innovation reduce ecological footprints, while higher financial development and economic growth increase the ecological footprints. Therefore, these findings imply that in forthcoming years, the selected Southeast Asian countries will need to tackle the environmental adversities by enhancing their renewable electricity generation capacities, increasing investment in technological development, greening the financial sector, and adopting environmentally-friendly growth policies. Hence, the implementation of relevant policies, in this regard, can be expected to ensure complementarity between economic growth and environmental welfare across Southeast Asia.
