As China reaffirms its commitments to limit the climate change risk and improve air quality, a combination of new policy and technology opportunities is presenting itself. A national emission trading scheme (ETS) begun in 2017 and is showing great promise, creating decentralized incentives for cost effective pollution mitigation. At the same time, sustained energy sector innovation is driving the costs of renewable electric power generation below those of fossil fuel substitutes. Early economic evidence of ETS measured pollution reductions, but has not addressed important economy-wide net benefits. This paper focuses on technology and energy cost savings and is the first to account for three multiplier effects—shifting consumption patterns, job growth, and the benefits of induced productivity growth—that would result from accelerated renewable electricity deployment in China. Results from a dynamic recursive computable general equilibrium model for 2017 to 2030 show that expanding renewable deployment can interact with the ETS to slash GHG emissions, as well as energy costs, stimulating significant long-term economic growth. These results suggest that China should accelerate its clean energy transition, not only for the air-quality and climate benefits, but to fulfill the energy sector's potential to promote innovation, employment, and economic growth. In the extant literature, there are numerous discussions on China's environmental sustainability. However, few scholars have considered renewable energy consumption and trade policy simultaneously to debate environmental sustainability. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine how renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, bio-capacity, economic growth, and trade policy dynamically affect the ecological footprint (a proxy for environmental sustainability). Using the data from 1971 to 2017 and employing the auto-regressive distributed lag model to perform an empirical analysis, the results demonstrate that renewable energy consumption and trade policy are conducive to environmental sustainability because of their negative impacts on the ecological footprint. However, the results also indicate that bio-capacity, non-renewable energy consumption, and economic growth are putting increasing pressure on environmental sustainability due to their positive impacts on the ecological footprint. Moreover, to determine the direction of causality between the highlighted variables, the Yoda-Yamamoto causality test was conducted. The results suggest a two-way causal relationship between renewable energy consumption and ecological footprint, non-renewable energy consumption and ecological footprint, and economic growth and ecological footprint. The global shift to renewable energy is conducive to carbon reduction, but its impact on the economy is still uncertain. Unlike existing research focusing on the effect of domestic renewable energy (RE), this paper considers the global RE connection among countries and examines the impact of global RE development on economic growth (EG) using China as a sample. In addition, we apply a novel wavelet-based quantile-on-quantile method, which can estimate the local influence of the α-quantile of global RE on the β-quantile of the EG in different periods. The finding shows that the upper quantiles of RE promote EG , and this effect is greater at the upper quantiles of EG in the medium- and long-term. This is mainly because China plays a leading role in RE development and has an advantage in exporting RE -related products with the development of global RE. The finding proves the growth effect, indicating that RE is a blessing for China's EG. However, in the short term, a higher level of global RE development impedes China's EG due to high upfront costs of RE production, fierce competition from other countries, and insufficient energy supply when significant investment shifts from non-renewable energy to RE. • Spatial pattern and evolution trends of four kinds of residential energy consumption in China are investigated. • Spatial difference in the distribution of gravity centers of residential energy consumption is depicted. • Standard deviational ellipse demonstrates the dynamic evolution patterns of residential energy consumption. • Coupling coordination degree between residential energy consumption and the economic indicator is investigated. • Electricity should be taken into further consideration in the development of residential energy improvement. The residential energy consumption in China shows diversity and complexity in space. This paper aims to investigate the spatial pattern and evolution trends of four kinds of residential energy consumption (electricity, coal, oil, and natural gas) through gravity center modeling and standard deviational ellipse modeling. Further, their relations to economic growth are probed by using the coupling and coordination degree model. Panel data at the provincial level in China are collected from 2000 to 2019. Our results show that the most drastic movement trend of gravity centers is coal, natural gas, followed by oil, whereas electricity moved slightly in space. Further, the standard deviational ellipse of electricity exhibits relatively stable patterns than the other three residential energy consumption during the study period. In addition, the coupling coordination degree between residential energy consumption and the economic growth is examined, and the results indicate that the total residential electricity consumption shows the highest coupling coordination degree, followed by residential gas, oil, and coal. It demonstrates lower coupling coordination degrees in rural areas than in urban areas in the total and sectoral residential energy consumption. In sum, several policy implications can be demonstrated based on our findings, i.e., the development of electricity consumption in the residential energy structure may improve the energy stability in space in China, and ensuring access to electricity should be taken into further consideration in the development of residential energy improvement to achieve a better coordination level to economic development. This paper quantitatively measures the labor productivity dispersion index of 30 provincial-level political regions (excluding Tibet) in mainland China from 2006 to 2018 based on industrial employment and output share data. Based on clarifying each region's economic variability, a spatial panel model is used to examine regional economic growth and labor productivity dispersions' effects on energy intensity. It was found that energy intensity in China is significantly spatially correlated. There is a clear gap between the share of output and the share of employment in China's three industries where labor productivity has deviated. The highest index of labor productivity dispersion is found in the western region, followed by the central region, with the lowest in the eastern region. Although, China's economic growth has had a significant negative impact on energy intensity, the current stage of China's economic development model is able to gradually achieve efficient energy use. However, the dispersion of labor productivity is not conducive to the improvement of energy factor allocation efficiency, and rationalization of industrial structure and employment structure transformation are urgently needed. To control energy intensity, China should actively adjust the current labor productivity dispersion; promote the transfer of primary industry labor to secondary and tertiary industries; strengthen control mechanisms for energy prices; optimize the impact of investment activities on energy intensity; and improve energy efficiency. • China's factor input structure and power sources are undergoing profound changes. • The study incorporates spatial measures to study the energy intensity problem. • Labor productivity dispersion raises energy intensity. • Economic growth is decoupled from energy intensity at this stage. • Higher energy prices can actually lead to higher energy intensity. Under the downward pressure of the economy, China's extensive economic growth that relies on factor input is difficult to sustain. Scientific analysis of the industrial restructuring and energy consumption has become the key to realizing China's economic growth from high-speed to high-quality. Based on the fully-modified least square method and panel vector error correction model, this paper explores the equilibrium relationship and Granger causality among the industrial restructuring, energy consumption and economic growth at aggregated and disaggregated levels. The results show that: (1) The effect of industrial structure rationalization on economic growth is higher than that of industrial structure upgrading. When emphasizing industrial structure upgrade, the more reliable industrial policy to achieve China's sustainable economic growth is to pay attention to the industrial structure rationalization, especially in western China. (2) The impacts of natural gas and renewable energy consumption on economic growth are much smaller than coal and electricity consumption; more energy policies should be designed to encourage clean energy development. • The industrial structure rationalization has highest contribution to the economic growth of eastern China, followed by central and western China. • There exists unidirectional causality from industrial structure upgrading to structure rationalizing in western China and bidirectional causality between them in central China. • Effects of natural gas and renewable energy consumption on economic growth are much smaller than coal and electricity consumption. • Unidirectional long-term causality from renewable energy to economic growth exist in each sub-region. Developing energy from renewable sources and modernizing the energy system are critical components of China's efforts to combat climate change. Policymakers and authorities have made significant attempts to bring them. However, one of the major impediments to China's energy revolution is financial limitations, which are inextricably linked to the country's economic growth. The present research paper intends to investigate the relationship between economic growth and sustainable financial development on the use of energy from renewable sources in both the short and long run in the context of China. To achieve this, the researchers have utilized the panel data consisting of 10 years from 2011 to 2020. When compared to cross-sectional and time-series data samples, the panel data model offers many benefits. For starters, the panel data includes information on the passage of time and the cross-sectional area. Another benefit of using panel-data models with a larger degree of freedom is that they provide more stable and reliable estimates across short periods across cross-sections. In the case of the short run, there is a positive relationship between economic and financial development and the use of energy from renewable sources in the context of all of China. While in the case of long-term effects, the results indicate the adverse impact of financial development on the use of energy from renewable sources in the western regions of China. These results were deduced using the causality test Granger proposed to determine the path of the causal relationship and the direction of the relationship between the variables. These results indicated that the relationship between economic and financial development in east China was unidirectional, and the nature of the underlying relationship was causal. Meanwhile, in east and west China, economic development in China as a whole has been unidirectionally increasing energy from renewable sources. The present research aims to conduct a systemic review on Renewable Energy, Economic Growth and Economic Development and look for links between the papers published between 2008 and May 2021. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, it was possible to reach a sample of 111 articles selected by Web of Science and a sample of 199 academic articles selected by Scopus in that specific period. The analysis of the group of Renewable and Non-renewable Energy Consumption, Economic Growth and Economic Development shows that most of the articles published in this subsample use the quantitative methodology in economic sciences. The results indicate that research on the subject has a growing trend and that most of the articles are post-2015 publications. In addition, China has been the leading nation in published works. The journal Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews is considered the most relevant in this category, and Sustainability has the most publications. Finally, a research gap was identified to be explored, lacking studies aimed at understanding the consumption of renewable energies and economic development and studies that focus on renewable energies and economic growth in less developed economies.
