A prominent feature of the western North Pacific tropical cyclone genesis frequency (TCGF) anomaly in response to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a distinct west‐east dipole structure in the present‐day (PD) climate. Here, large ensemble high‐resolution simulations show that the current dipole may transform into a monopole under global warming (GW). In the PD climate, the ENSO‐induced dipole effect on TCGF is mainly observed in late autumn. However, GW accelerates this effect into the summer by amplifying atmospheric circulation anomalies. Consequently, this leads to a significant increase in the coastal TCGF during the development phase of El Niño under GW. Meanwhile, it weakens the anomalous anticyclonic circulation during late autumn, leading to an increase in coastal TCGF during the mature phase of El Niño, and vice versa. Therefore, the combined effect suggests a potential trend toward spatial homogenization during ENSO phases under GW. Plain Language Summary: El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) typically has a dipole impact on tropical cyclone genesis frequency (TCGF) over the western North Pacific (WNP) in the current climate. During the warm phase of ENSO, there is a significant increase in TCGF over the southeastern part of the WNP (open‐sea region), but a decrease over its northwestern part (coastal region). The opposite pattern occurs during the cold phase of ENSO. However, under global warming (GW), this dipole pattern could transform into a basin‐uniform change in TCGF. In the present climate, ENSO primarily affects TCGF only over the open‐sea region during the summer (June to August) but causes a dipole pattern of TCGF anomalies in the autumn (September–November). The summer TCGF over the coastal region is less influenced by ENSO. Hence, the dipole pattern of TCGF anomalies from summer to autumn is mainly contributed by the anomaly in autumn TCGF over the coastal region. However, GW could extend the ENSO impact on coastal TCGF to summer. Therefore, the TCGF anomaly in summer offsets the opposite TCGF anomaly in autumn over the coastal region during the ENSO phase, resulting in a more consistent change in TCGF anomalies across the region under GW. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is crucial to the interannual variability of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis over the western North Pacific (WNP). However, most state-of-the-art climate models exhibit a consistent pattern of uncertainty in the simulated TC genesis frequency (TCGF) over the WNP in ENSO phases. Here, we analyze large ensemble simulations of TC-resolved climate models to identify the source of this uncertainty. Results show that large uncertainty appears in the South China Sea and east of the Philippines, primarily arising from two distinct atmospheric modes: the Matsuno-Gill-mode (MG-mode) and the Pacific-Japan-like pattern (PJ-mode). These two modes are closely associated with anomalous diabatic heating linked to tropical precipitation bias in model simulations. By conditionally constraining either of the modes, we can significantly reduce model uncertainty in simulating the dipole structure of the TCGF anomalies, confirming that it is the atmospheric circulation bias in response to tropical precipitation bias that causes uncertainty in the simulated WNP TCGF. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections exhibit a strong dependency on seasonally and intraseasonally varying mean states, leading to impactful short-term variations in regional climate. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-ENSO relation is a typical example, in that its phase relationship reverses systematically between the early and late winter. Here based on observations and an ensemble of atmosphere-only climate model simulations, we reveal that this NAO phase reversal occurs synchronously in early January, showing strong abruptness. We demonstrate that this abrupt NAO phase reversal is caused by the change in ENSO-induced Rossby wave-propagating direction from northeastward to southeastward over the northeastern North American region, which is largely governed by a climatological alteration of the local jet meridional shear. We also provide evidence that the North Atlantic intrinsic eddy–low-frequency flow feedback further amplifies the NAO responses. Owing to the significant influence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on global climate, how ENSO events are initiated is an intriguing issue. The North Pacific Oscillation (NPO), a primary atmospheric variability over the midlatitude, is a well-known trigger for ENSO events, but the physical linkage is not yet fully understood. Based on observational analyses, in Part I, we proposed a new mechanism that the NPO-related wave activity flux (WAF) could directly induce the equatorial wind anomalies in both upper and lower levels. In this study, we substantiate the impacts of the WAF on tropical circulations using climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phases 5 and 6 (CMIP5/6). We found that the intensity of the southward WAF over the central Pacific is a paramount factor resulting in intermodel diversity in simulating the NPO–ENSO linkage. By classifying the models into two groups of strong and weak meridional WAF (MWAF), we reveal that the strong MWAF models simulate stronger upper- and lower-level equatorial winds and precipitation anomalies that facilitate the ENSO in subsequent winter. We also reveal that the magnitude of the MWAF is closely related to the model's climatological meridional wind and meridional shear of climatological zonal wind, emphasizing the role of systematic bias on the ENSO simulation. A comparison of the MWAF impact and seasonal footprinting mechanism demonstrates the dominant influence of the MWAF in determining the diversity of NPO–ENSO relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The North Pacific Oscillation (NPO), a representative midlatitude atmospheric variability, plays an important role in the development of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). To explain this extratropical–tropical linkage, previous studies have focused on the atmospheric boundary layer processes coupled with the mixed-layer ocean. Different from the existing hypothesis, in this study, we propose a new mechanism to link the NPO to ENSO via upper-tropospheric teleconnections. Analyses of the wave activity flux show that wave energy associated with the NPO directly propagates from midlatitude to the tropics, modulating the tropical circulation. During the NPO event, this equatorward energy flux becomes pronounced after the NPO peak phase and persists for more than two weeks. As a result, when a positive NPO grows (here, north anticyclonic–south cyclonic circulation), upper-level easterly wind anomalies are situated along the equatorial Pacific. Accordingly, anomalous lower-level westerly winds simultaneously occur in the equatorial Pacific, contributing to the development of El Niño events. To demonstrate the wave energy propagation via the upper-level troposphere, a stationary wave model experiment was performed with an NPO-like barotropic vorticity forcing. Near‐term prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) activity is of great importance to formulate the long‐term plans for mitigating the potential TC‐induced damages. Here, we introduce a multi‐timescale regression model of TC genesis frequency (TCGF), which includes contributions by three interannual modes (El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, sea surface temperature anomalies over the eastern Indian Ocean and tropical North Atlantic), two interdecadal modes (the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation), and a global warming mode. The model is shown to be able to capture well the present‐day multi‐timescale changes in TCGF in the major TC basins in the Northern Hemisphere. By combining the model and 100‐member simulations by the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model, we predict a robust increase in TCGF over the eastern North Pacific, an insignificant increase over the western North Pacific, and little change over the North Atlantic during 2020–2030 relative to 2009–2019. However, the field on TC activity is very much in its infancy. Here we predict the near‐term changes in TC genesis frequency (TCGF) in the three main TC basins in the Northern Hemisphere, namely the western North Pacific, the eastern North Pacific, and the North Atlantic, by combining a new multi‐timescale regression model and the state‐of‐the‐art climate model projections. This regression model is constructed based on six key climate factors on different time scales, and can well reproduce the present‐day TCGF change during 1960–2019. The model predicts a significant increase in TCGF over the eastern North Pacific while insignificant change over the other two basins in the next 10 years. Observational and climate model analysis showed that the anomalous sea surface temperature in the north tropical Atlantic (NTA) in boreal spring can trigger El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the subsequent winter. Similarly, the climate models participating in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) are known to reasonably simulate the NTA effect. Nevertheless, the strengths of the NTA effect on ENSO among the climate models are also diverse. In this light, we revisited the possible causes that contributed to the different NTA effects on ENSO in the CMIP5 climate models. We found that the strength of the NTA triggering ENSO in the climate model tended to be proportional to the intensity of the climatological subtropical North Pacific high system in boreal spring. The stronger climatological subtropical North Pacific high accompanied enhanced trade wind, precipitation reduction, and cold sea surface temperature over the subtropics. Under these conditions, the moist static energy feedback process, also known as the moist enthalpy advection mechanism, effectively operated around the Pacific intertropical convergence zone. That is, the NTA-induced signals in the subtropical North Pacific readily intruded into the deep tropical Pacific with the aid of the feedback processes, leading to an ENSO event. Consistent with the CMIP5 analysis results, the observed NTA effect on ENSO became stronger during the decades when the climatological North Pacific subtropical high intensified, underpinning the importance of climatology in the subtropical North Pacific in the NTA–ENSO connection. Previous studies have shown that the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) has a crucial impact on the central Pacific El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this study, we redefined the PMM index used previously by focusing on the sea surface temperature in the subtropical northeastern Pacific (NEP), and found that the correlations between the PMM and ENSO are distinct on different timescales. We refer to this redefined index as PMM NEP. Results show that a positive PMM is weakly related to El Niño, while a negative PMM is more convincingly related to La Niña, specifically, the equatorial negative SSTAs possibly affecting negative PMM events. Moreover, the cause–effect relation between the PMM NEP and ENSO is much more significant on a decadal timescale than on an interannual timescale, and their interaction may be related to the equatorial zonal wind field. Our finding indicates that a La Niña-like decadal pattern is established through the combined actions of the PMM and ENSO, rather than an El Niño-like decadal pattern. • The PMM index defined in this study removes the signals of ENSO more effectively. • A positive PMM is weakly related to El Niño, while a negative PMM is more convincingly related to La Niña. • The relation between the PMM and ENSO is much more significant on a decadal timescale than on an interannual timescale.
