The structure and operating principle of a four-stroke internal combustion engine are usually demonstrated using the cut-away model of an internal combustion engine or its computer animation. However, by observing the operation of the engine mechanism, the understanding of the main essence, which consists of the transformation of thermal energy from the combustion of gasoline into the mechanical energy of the piston movement is lost. This work describes the demonstration of the ignition and combustion of the fuel mixture and the transformation of thermal energy generated by the combustion of gasoline into the mechanical energy of the piston. A paper rocket is used instead of a piston for the spectacle of the experiment. This demonstration does not leave anyone from the audience indifferent. This paper provides a legal analysis of the direct line in the legislation of the European Union. The direct line, serving as a legal instrument to implement off-grid solutions, plays a crucial role in amplifying competition within the energy market. Compared to other instruments introduced by the First Liberalization Package in 1992, the direct line is not a subject commonly brought about by legal literature. The core part of legal analyses is divided into two parts, which focus on different approaches of direct line, i.e., European Union and selected Member States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland). The motives of the Union in establishing the direct line instrument was to support opening the energy market to increase energy generating units. During the transposition of the direct line into national laws, analysed countries have directed the usage of this mechanism to promote renewable energy sources. The presented case studies create a rare pattern of how the Member States form their own interpretations and hence use the Union law in practice, which differs from the direction established in the Union forum. The research focused on legal dogmatic examining of regulations at both European and national levels, with a particular emphasis on the definition part while figuring a crucial role in shaping the direct line concept. The paper also presents other convoluted legal schemes, such as the permit issuance process for direct line construction. In light of China's rapid growth and increasing engagement in the global climate regime, the authoritarian regulatory model has attracted attention from researchers and policymakers alike. This paper examines the question of to what extent and in what way state authoritarianism leads to (un)successful environmental policy implementation in China, with particular attention to energy transformation. This study inter-connects macro and micro inquiries through a case study of nuclear energy policy in China. An examination of the extended policy cycle as a comprehensive process that brings a policy to fruition shows that authoritarian regulatory environmental policy intervenes in each stage, resulting in a particular path of the evolution of environmental policy in nuclearising energy transformation in China. Adding to commonly accepted tenets of authoritarian environmentalism in general, the explanations of Chinese distinctiveness in materialising environmental policy enhances the understanding of the merits and challenges of authoritarian mechanisms of environmental policy. Purpose: The EU is currently facing an energy transition that is a process affecting entire regions and changing many aspects of reality. The European Green Deal assumes that the transition, which in its consequences may cause so-called "territorial stress,” should be fair, and that citizens and regions affected by the swap will not be left behind”. Energy poverty understood as a situation in which households are unable to access essential energy services and products, is most likely to affect less developed regions – especially coal mining areas in the near future post-mining areas. The goal of this paper is the analysis of adequate energy poverty indicators tailored for post-mining areas- based on the SITRANS project results. Design/methodology/approach: To begin, the review was performed using both the standard method of critical literature review, web-based literature research and a study of academic multidisciplinary databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar. The next step of the research was the mapping of the literature flow around energy transformation. For this mapping, the methodology of VOS-viewer has been used. The last part of the research was focused on indication analysis of adequate energy poverty indicators tailored for post-mining areas. Findings: It was shown that one of the most common approaches to defining energy poverty is to precise it as a situation in which households are unable to access essential energy services and products Additionally it was pointed out, that the ambitious goal of the EU is to be climate-neutral by 2050, an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions requires multilevel and multidimensional changes, what it can cause so-called “territorial stress”. The transition to a decarbonized economy in the EU-27 is expected to result in the loss of approximately 76,000 jobs in coal mines and plants by 2025; the number is expected to double with more than 154,000 job losses projected by 2030. As such the negative effects of energy transformation can contribute to an increase in the level of energy poverty. The performed review indicated that to make sure that no one in this process would be left behind a Just Transition has been set up. At that point correlation between energy transformation, Just Transition and energy poverty has been indicated. It was indicated that energy transformation will affect less developed regions – especially coal mining areas in the near future post-mining areas. The finding of the paper is the proposal of energy poverty for the post-mining areas. Practical implications: The outcomes of the project are going to be used in the SITRANS project. The empirical research is to be conducted in coal regions of Western Macedonia in Greece, Silesia, Poland and Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The results will allow us to estimate the level of energy poverty and as such will be a base for creating Roadmap for Energy Poverty Alleviation. In this paper, we propose new Metropolis–Hastings and simulated annealing algorithms on a finite state space via modifying the energy landscape. The core idea of landscape modification rests on introducing a parameter c , such that the landscape is modified once the algorithm is above this threshold parameter to encourage exploration, while the original landscape is utilized when the algorithm is below the threshold for exploitation purposes. We illustrate the power and benefits of landscape modification by investigating its effect on the classical Curie–Weiss model with Glauber dynamics and external magnetic field in the subcritical regime. This leads to a landscape-modified mean-field equation, and with appropriate choice of c the free energy landscape can be transformed from a double-well into a single-well landscape, while the location of the global minimum is preserved on the modified landscape. Consequently, running algorithms on the modified landscape can improve the convergence to the ground state in the Curie–Weiss model. In the setting of simulated annealing, we demonstrate that landscape modification can yield improved or even subexponential mean tunnelling time between global minima in the low-temperature regime by appropriate choice of c , and we give a convergence guarantee using an improved logarithmic cooling schedule with reduced critical height. We also discuss connections between landscape modification and other acceleration techniques, such as Catoni's energy transformation algorithm, preconditioning, importance sampling, and quantum annealing. The technique developed in this paper is not limited to simulated annealing, but is broadly applicable to any difference-based discrete optimization algorithm by a change of landscape. Accelerating the transformation of the rural energy structure is an indispensable part of energy transformation in developing countries. In this novel study, the transformation effect of China's rural energy structure from 2001 to 2020 was evaluated. Further, this paper also identified the decoupling state between the rural energy structure transition and carbon emissions, and decomposed the spatial–temporal effects of rural carbon decoupling through efficiency measures. According to the survey, the dual substitution index of the rural energy structure in China increased from 0.466 to 1.828, and showed a decreasing trend in spatial distribution from the east to the central and western regions. Economic development and climate characteristics have become important influencing factors for the dual substitution of the rural energy structure. The decoupling relationship between the dual substitution of the rural energy structure and carbon emissions was mainly characterized in the strong decoupling, expansion negative decoupling, and strong negative decoupling states. Regional imbalances have deepened as the efficiency of rural energy carbon decoupling has gradually increased. The annual average efficiency of rural energy carbon decoupling in a dynamic perspective has increased by 10.579%, and the dual substitution of the energy structure has a significant driving effect on rural carbon reduction. Climate policy-driven transformation processes in the energy sector are accelerating changes to both national and international legal frameworks. However, no successful just energy transition is achievable without significant regulatory reforms. In this context, the article examines the possibility for modifying and introducing regulatory tools to guarantee that the just energy transition is conducted in order to accomplish climate goals and lower anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The analysis is based on the application of the theory of energy justice and its five principal pillars: recognition, procedural, distributive, restorative, and cosmopolitan justice. For each of these five domains, the paper proposed regulatory tools that can strengthen the energy policies, both pursued and planned, in terms of institutional and decision-making dimensions. The analysis' key conclusion is that there is a need for a fundamental change in how energy policies are planned and conducted, and that its regulatory tools must be modified to meet the requirements of energy justice. As a result, proposed in this paper are universal measures to institutionalise energy justice in different legal regimes that should be viewed as advancements in the effort to make energy transition processes more just. The aim of this article is to present solutions related to wind energy in EU countries as an alternative to fossil fuels. This article is based on secondary information and statistical data regarding the development of wind power engineering in EU countries for the years 2016–2022. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze of the relations between the development of wind energy in European Union countries and GPD (gross domestic product) per capita and selected factors. The following hypotheses were formulated: H1—There is a statistically significant correlation between GDP per capita and the use of wind energy in European Union countries. H2—There is a relationship between the length of the coastline and the use of wind energy in European Union countries. H3—There is a statistically significant correlation between the attitude to uncertainty of the inhabitants of a given country and the use of wind energy in said country. The presented research results support all these hypotheses. The results of the research regarding H2 are as follows: in the case of northern European countries (Ireland and Finland) and the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), the development of wind power engineering in the study period was faster than could be inferred from the length of the coastline in these countries. Regarding hypothesis H1, it was concluded on the basis of the analysis that the involvement of countries in the development of wind power engineering is correlated with their wealth. The novelty of this paper emerges from its innovative approach to analyzing wind power engineering, its incorporation of cultural factors, its quantitative assessment of correlations, and its actionable policy recommendations. Green finance is profoundly affecting the energy transition, and at the global level, renewable energy has entered a leapfrog development phase. Unlike the research object that existing studies focus on, this paper selects 53 countries and regions that have launched green finance businesses as research sample, and empirically assesses the effect of green finance on the development of renewable energy based on cross-country panel data spanning 2000 to 2021. The results show that renewable energy development is positively impacted by green finance, and the marginal impact of green finance is gradually growing as renewable energy development level improves; the contribution of green finance to renewable energy development holds only in developed countries, emerging economies, countries with high green financial development levels, and countries with strong environmental regulations, but not in relatively backward developing countries, countries with low green financial development levels, and countries with weak environmental regulations; sectors of renewable energy that rely more heavily on external financing are more likely to be promoted by green finance; green finance supports renewable energy development mainly through promoting investment in renewable energy fixed assets and innovation in technology of the sector. When solving open-region electromagnetic scattering problems using the standard finite element method, the infinite region exterior to the scatterer must be truncated with an artificial outer boundary. In the interior or finite part of the domain, finite elements can be used, but a boundary condition must be introduced at this artificial boundary to obtain a unique finite element solution. One class of boundary conditions designed for this purpose is called absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs). Several ABCs have been reported in the literature. These can be broadly classified into two categories: local and non-local. In this paper, we present new closed-form expressions for Nth-order local ABCs, equivalent to the well-known sequences of the Bayliss, Gunzburger, and Turkel boundary operators. To the best of our knowledge, these expressions have not yet been reported in the literature. Two- and three-dimensional problems are considered in this study. We also discuss the problem of incorporating custom ABCs into commercial finite element method programs, which are usually closed-source software packages. Hydrogen energy has an advantage over conventional fossil energy because of its clean and low-carbon features, while its stability gives it an advantage over renewable energy sources such as hydropower, photovoltaic (PV) power, and wind power. Using hydrogen as a fuel can achieve zero carbon emissions or even net zero emissions at the end of energy conversion. Moreover, with hydrogen as the carrier, an energy system of multi-energy complementarity will be established by coupling multiple energy systems such as power grids, gas grids and heat networks, which can realize the comprehensive utilization of renewable energy sources in an efficient, stable, and flexible manner. Based on the "dual carbon" goals, this paper targets sectors with high carbon emissions represented by electric power, steel and transportation, analyzes the feasible path of using hydrogen energy to promote deep carbon reduction, and points out the obstacles faced by hydrogen energy development in various sectors. On account of the current development and expected prospects, this paper proposes that the current focus of hydrogen energy industry is to coordinate the development of industrial sectors and regions, build a pattern that can facilitate the industry's systematic and concerted development, address key technical challenges (such as green hydrogen production or hydrogen storage and transportation via pipeline), improve industrial standards, and promote the industry's development in a balanced, coordinated and orderly way. Energy systems are rapidly transforming towards sustainability, involving significant realignments in social, economic and political systems. New actors such as communities are seeking empowerment to engage in transformations. A range of actors has applied the concept of empowerment in energy transformations to signify different ideas for how communities can engage with energy. As such, its meaning is shaped by ambiguities, uncertainties and contestations. Traditionally, a neoliberal discourse has framed empowerment in energy, resulting in a hollowing of the term and questions around what it means, to whom and in which contexts. This paper contributes to this debate by unpacking empowerment in energy transformations in the context of community energy initiatives. Building on interviews and multicriteria mapping techniques, this paper concludes that all energy stakeholders prefer the strongest options for empowerment. However, empowerment is a co‐produced phenomenon revealing a role for all stakeholders in its cultivation. The paper outlines the methodology employed for desk-based research, which involved gathering and analyzing empirical data on energy and heating consumption in the Polish small consumer sector. Secondary sources, including reports, documents, scientific publications, and public statistics, were utilized to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. The research methodology ensured the acquisition and examination of reliable and extensive data regarding energy and heat consumption among small consumers in Poland. The study investigated consumption trends of hard coal, electricity, and natural gas in Polish households from 2006 to 2021. The findings revealed an increasing pattern in electricity and natural gas consumption, alongside a simultaneous decline in the usage of hard coal. Future consumption was estimated using trend models, and factors contributing to changes in energy consumption patterns were examined, with forecasts to 2027. To achieve decarbonization and address climate objectives, the study underscores the need to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources and boost energy efficiency. The significance of reducing household energy consumption through enhanced insulation, smart energy management systems, and low-carbon alternatives is emphasized. Additionally, the study addresses Poland's future energy plans as a proactive step toward decarbonizing the national economy. The transformation of the European energy sector is becoming a priority for the European Union. This is indicated, for instance, in the European Union strategy known as the European Green Deal. According to the Green Deal, the area of 'research and innovation' is one which can counteract climate change. Universities can play a significant role in this by adopting a pedagogical approach aimed at mobilizing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in young professionals. In addition to modifying curricula related to mining, energy, and environmental engineering, i.e., activities in recognized, traditional schemes, one prospective tool may be the involvement of students and PhD candidates in European initiatives such as the InnoEnergy PhD School (which is funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology). This paper aims to discuss the InnoEnergy PhD School programme as a possible instrument for mitigating the negative effects of energy transformation. The article analyzes the programme using a case study method, including surveys and open interviews. The paper draws attention to and highlights the role of human resources in the field of education and the stimulation of innovation, as well as the need to strengthen the business component in the education of PhD candidates. Background: Formative assessments are needed to enable monitoring how student knowledge develops throughout a unit. Constructed response items which require learners to formulate their own free‐text responses are well suited for testing their active knowledge. However, assessing such constructed responses in an automated fashion is a complex task and requires the application of natural language processing methodology. In this article, we implement and evaluate multiple machine learning models for coding energy knowledge in free‐text responses of German K‐12 students to items in formative science assessments which were conducted during synchronous online learning sessions. Dataset: The dataset we collected for this purpose consists of German constructed responses from 38 different items dealing with aspects of energy such as manifestation and transformation. The units and items were implemented with the help of project‐based pedagogy and evidence‐centered design, and the responses were coded for seven core ideas concerning the manifestation and transformation of energy. The data was collected from students in seventh, eighth and ninth grade. Methodology: We train various transformer‐ and feature‐based models and compare their ability to recognize the respective ideas in students' writing. Moreover, as domain knowledge and its development can be formally modeled through knowledge networks, we evaluate how well the detection of the ideas within responses translated into accurate co‐occurrence‐based knowledge networks. Finally, in terms of the descriptive accuracy of our models, we inspect what features played a role for which prediction outcome and if the models pick up on undesired shortcuts. In addition to this, we analyze how much the models match human coders in what evidence within responses they consider important for their coding decisions. Results: A model based on a modified GBERT‐large can achieve the overall most promising results, although descriptive accuracy varies much more than predictive accuracy for the different ideas assessed. For reasons of comparability, we also evaluate the same machine learning architecture using the SciEntsBank 3‐Way benchmark with an English RoBERTa‐large model, where it achieves state‐of‐the‐art results in two out of three evaluation categories. What this papers adds?: A core topic in physics education is the concept of energy.We implement and evaluate multiple systems based on natural language processing technology for assessing learners' conceptual knowledge about energy physics using transformer language models as well as feature‐based approaches.The systems assess students' knowledge about various forms of energy, indicators for the same and the transformation of energy from form into another.As our systems are based on machine learning methodology, we introduce a novel German short answer dataset for training them to detect the respective knowledge elements within students' free‐text responses.We evaluate the performance of these systems using this dataset as well as the well‐established SciEntsBand‐3‐Way dataset and manage to achieve, to our best knowledge, new state‐of‐the‐art results for the latter.Moreover, we apply methodology for explaining model predictions to assess whether predictions are carried out for the correct reasons. Implications for practice and/or policy: It is indeed possible to assess constructed responses for the demonstrated knowledge about energy physics in an analytic fashion using natural language processing.Transformer language models can outperform more specialized feature‐based approaches for this task in terms of predictive and descriptive accuracy.Co‐occurrences of different concepts within the same responses can lead models to learn undesired shortcuts which make them unstable. Currently, hydrogen and electric drives used in various means of transport is a leading topic in many respects. This article discusses the most important aspects of the operation of vehicles with electric drives (passenger cars) and hydrogen drives. In both cases, the official reason for using both drives is the possibility of independence from fossil fuel supplies, especially oil. The desire for independence is mainly dictated by political considerations. This article discusses the acquisition of basic raw materials for the construction of lithium-ion batteries in electric cars, as well as methods for obtaining hydrogen as a fuel. The widespread use of electric passenger cars requires the construction of a network of charging stations. This article shows that, taking into account the entire production process of electric cars, including lithium-ion batteries, the argument that they are ecological cannot be used. Additionally, it was indicated that there is no concept for the use of used accumulator batteries. If hydrogen drives are used in trains, there is no need to build the traction network infrastructure and then continuously monitor its technical condition and perform the necessary repairs. Of course, the necessary hydrogen tanks must be built, but there must be similar tanks to store oil for diesel locomotives. This paper also deals with other possibilities of hydrogen application for transformational usage, e.g., the use of combustion engines driven with liquid hydrogen. Unfortunately, an optimistic approach to this issue does not allow for a critical view of the whole matter. In public discussion, there is no room for scientific arguments and emotions to dominate. Abstract The coordinated development of intelligence and greening is an intrinsic demand for high-quality economic and social development. Intelligentization and greening are the leading directions of sustainable development of the power industry. This paper directs of sustainable development of the power industry. This paper empirically analyzes the effect and mechanism of intelligence on the green environmental friendliness of electric power substations by using a panel fixed-effects model and instrumental variable regression, using substation engineering data from China southern power grid during 2013–2022. It is found that the level of intelligence significantly promotes the green performance of substation projects, and this conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. Intelligence can reduce material waste and pollutant emissions by improving the engineering environmental monitoring capability and the refinement of engineering resource control, thus improving the environmental friendliness of the project. The research in this paper helps to promote the integrated development of intelligent and green power engineering, to better achieve economic and green goals.

Energy security has become the focus of common attention of all countries in the world. It is an effective way to promote the transformation of energy consumption structure from fossil energy consumption to renewable energy consumption at present. Based on the current development status of China, this paper mainly studies the spatial evolution process of the traditional energy and the renewable energy industry in Hebei province from the perspective of space and time, and analyzes the influencing factors in this process. The results are as follows: (1) Moran's I of the traditional energy industry increased from 0.254515 in 2005 to 0.289301 in 2021. Moran's I of the renewable energy industry increased from 0.31409 in 2005 to 0.426467 in 2021. This indicates the energy transition in Hebei is progressing. It is worth noting that the wind and solar energy industries are both higher than the national average; (2) the spatial diffusion effect of the energy industry in Hebei province becomes more and more significant with the transformation of regional energy industry, forming a spatial distribution trend of southwest to northeast axial diffusion; (3) from 2005 to 2018, the number of green productivity factors affecting the development of both traditional and renewable energy industries increased from 2 to 6. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework for handling end of life (henceforth EoL) scenarios of solar photovoltaic (solar PV) panels, which includes different options available to businesses and end-users, as well as promoting the collaboration between government and all relevant stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach: This paper adopts purposeful sampling, secondary data and content analysis to develop an appropriate conceptual framework that helps to create awareness of the appropriate options for dealing with the EoL cases of solar PV panels. Findings: From the data analysis, it is revealed that reuse, repair and recycling of solar PV panels can ensure value creation, public-private partnership and a solution for education in sustainability, and thus, prolonging the useful life cycle of the products. Research limitations/implications: This paper limits the analysis on developing economies and the use of selected literature based on the recycling of solar PV panels. Originality/value: This paper is an initial attempt to create an awareness by identifying, analyzing and educating the stakeholders to handle appropriately any EoL scenario of solar PV panels. This paper focuses on assessing the significant impact of emission accounting on the energy transformation efforts of 100 leading publicly listed companies in China from 2015 to 2021. Employing the CUP-FM technique, the results indicate that a 1% increase in carbon emissions correlates with approximately a 0.17% rise in fossil fuel consumption. Additionally, a 1% increase in resources allocated to green tax initiatives is associated with roughly a 0.35% reduction in fossil fuel expenditure. The study also reveals a noteworthy correlation between ICT investments and fossil fuel expenditure. The key recommendations emerging from this research include implementing green training programs for the workforce, establishing a robust green corporate management system, and standardizing the financial reporting of sustainable activities. Hydrogen can be considered an innovative fuel that will revolutionize the energy sector and enable even more complete use of the potential of renewable sources. The aim of the paper is to present the challenges faced by companies and economies that will produce and use hydrogen. Thanks to the use of hydrogen in the energy, transport and construction sectors, it will be possible to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. By 2050, global demand for hydrogen will increase to 614 million metric tons a year, and thanks to the use of hydrogen in energy, transport and construction, it will be possible to achieve climate neutrality. Depending on the method of hydrogen production, the processes used and the final effects, several groups can be distinguished, marked with different colors. It is in this area of obtaining friendly hydrogen that innovative possibilities for its production open up. The costs of hydrogen production are also affected by network fees, national tax systems, availability and prices of carbon capture, utilization, and storage installations, energy consumption rates by electrolyzers and transport methods. It is planned that 1 kg of hydrogen will cost USD 1. The study used the desk research method, which made it possible to analyze a huge amount of descriptive data and numerical data. In this paper, we present a numerical study of dynamic behavior of rock avalanche by using three-dimensional particle flow simulation. The emphasis is put on the influence of particle shape, size and gradation on the velocity and energy transformation process of falling rock clusters. A new numerical method is first developed for the three-dimensional reconstruction of rock clusters. A new approach is also proposed for the analysis of falling motion of rock clusters based on different energy transformation processes. A series of numerical calculations are performed with rock clusters composed of particles with different geometrical shapes, sizes and gradation. The influences of these factors on the velocity and energy transformation process are presented and analyzed. The obtained results suggest that the increase in irregularity degree of particle shape of rock clusters reduces the average velocity and collision-induced energy dissipation; for a certain volume of clusters, the decrease in particle size has little effect on the average velocity but significantly enhances friction-related energy dissipation; the impact of gradation is relative complex depending on the combination of shape and size of particles in rock clusters. Cohesion and rolling friction play key roles in governing the behavior of soil; however, only a limited number of studies have been able to assess the simultaneous contributions of these two microparameters on the macroproperties of soil. In this respect, the innovation of the current study includes an attempt to examine the interplay of these two primary parameters on the angle of repose (AoR) based on the discrete-element method (DEM). Lifting cylinder tests on cohesive wet sand have been carried out in DEM, while the cohesion and rolling friction are captured through proposed computational models. In this paper, macroparameters, such as the geometry and developmental stages of sand piles obtained in DEM simulation, are compared with experimental data, while their microevolution is quantified in detail. The results show that a large AoR can only be obtained when the cohesive and rotational frictional forces work in tandem. Increasing the cohesion and rolling friction results in smaller contact numbers, with increasing chain-like connections between particles and larger pore spaces to account for a larger AoR. For the first time, this study distinctly identifies three major stages that contribute to the AoR, based on the development of contact numbers and the transformation of energy. Accordingly, the linkage between macroscale AoR and the microstructural coordination number is formulated with varying levels of cohesion and rolling friction. The article deals with energy transformation on an architectural and urban scale. The first part describes the assumptions of the German energy transformation, taking into account both the scale of individual buildings and urban scale solutions based on RES. Selected objects and design concepts from Hamburg and Berlin are presented as model examples. The second part describes the approach to transformation on the example of Warsaw, based on current programmes, strategies and development visions in relation to the architecture and new standards of facilities as well as the use of RES on an urban scale. The German approach was compared to the Polish assumptions, indicating the possibility of implementing some solutions. A discussion and a photographic documentation made 'in situ' of selected Polish and German contemporary RES applications in architecture are presented. Selected examples of modern buildings show the use of energy-saving and RES technologies. The analysis of contemporary architectural designs concerns issues related to energy and the possibility of adapting contemporary architecture to a changing climate. At the end of the paper, challenges in the context of energy transformation are presented. The need to adapt buildings and cities to climate change requires transforming the traditional linear design process into an energy-integrated one operating in terms of the principles of sustainable development. This process will not be possible without the support of digital design and simulation tools as well as mapping to determine the potential of RES in cities in the perspective of 2050. The advancement of Financial Technology (FinTech) is crucial for government entities, the National Grid, and various energy corporations to facilitate the transition towards sustainable and green production methods. This study investigates the relationship between FinTech and Total Factor Energy Efficiency (TFEE) using data from a selected sample of 254 city groups in China. We examine how the development of FinTech impacts TFEE from both non-spatial and spatial perspectives. The results from the non-spatial panel model indicate that FinTech development has a significant positive impact on TFEE. Comparative studies were conducted using fixed effects (FE), feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) models, and system generalized method of moments (GMM) models, and the main findings remained consistent, confirming the robustness of our conclusions. Spatial autocorrelation results reveal a significant positive spatial spillover effect on TFEE. Both the spatial Durbin model and the dynamic spatial Durbin model demonstrate that FinTech also has a significant positive impact on TFEE, and this effect increases over time. These conclusions remain robust even after considering various spatial weight matrices and alternative methods for calculating TFEE. Additionally, we discovered that the digital economy plays a vital role in strengthening the relationship between FinTech and TFEE. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that, compared to cities without resource-based economies, FinTech development in growing resource-based cities has a more substantial impact on TFEE. Employment and the competencies of employees in the energy sector are coming into particular prominence in economies around the world. It is one of the few sectors positively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, a significant global change in the awareness of society occurred in favor of increasing pro-health and pro-environmental activities, which can be seen in the green transformation. Poland can also boast such changes in recent years, as evidenced by the dynamic development of renewable energy sources (boom for photovoltaics) and the increase in prosumption. Correlated with this is the increase in demand for employees with specific competencies, the so-called multi-competencies that are a compilation of technical, business, and soft and hard competencies, as well as interdisciplinary ones. The paper emphasizes the need to better adjust the education system to the real needs of the labor market in a turbulent environment with the use of the Sectoral Qualifications Framework in Energy, developed in cooperation with stakeholders from the industry. Therefore, the authors analyzed the employment structure in the energy sector in Poland, with particular emphasis on the factors and conditions of this structure and made an attempt to identify and create a competency profile of employees in this area. For the purposes of this article, two key research problems were formulated: What are the key competencies of employees in the energy sector? How is employment changing in this area? The following research hypothesis was also put forward: The transformation of the energy sector towards green energy affects the increase in employment in this area and the increase in the demand for soft competencies. The article, meant as the first in a series, tries to answer some questions around the future desired shape of the new Polish electro-energy mix in relation to the one described in the national energy policy document PEP 2040 (Energy Policy of Poland till 2040) and as compared with the targets set up in the newest UE legislative package, 'Fit-for-55'. In this article, I first present the rich overview of literature as well as economic theory behind the analysis of the energy transformation and energy-mix decarbonisation, in order to show how the energy mix should evolve in a way that will guarantee the biggest net gain to the society. Second, some comparable cost calculations on selected electro-energy sources, both LCOE (levelized cost of energy) and external costs are presented; these are modifications of my previous work as a co-author. Finally, the comparison of the 2040 electro-energy mix, as designed in the official governmental programme PEP 2040, with the two alternative scenarios, both of which exclude coal, and one also neglects the possibilities for nuclear energy to be included in the mix are presented. The alternative scenarios built into the paper are based on European Union (EU) plans to decarbonise Europe quickly. Recent geopolitical considerations related to the war in Ukraine, however, make it necessary to consider energy security as an important part of the plan. That would mean that nuclear energy would be a necessary component of the future mix in Poland. Security considerations are left to be analysed in the coming months, after a series of articles on lessons learnt by other developed countries in the process of making their energy-mix transformations and will complete the final recommendations for the future of the Polish energy mix. Increasing seepage flow causes soil particles to migrate, i.e., from local piping to complete fluidization, resulting in reduced effectives stress and degraded shear stiffness of the soil foundation. This process has received considerable attention in the past years, however, majority of them concentrate on macro-aspects such as the internal erosion and soil deformation, while there is a lack of fundamental studies addressing the energy transport at micro-scale of fluid-soil systems during soil approaching fluidization. In this regard, the current study presents an assessment of the energy evolution in soil fluidization based on the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computation fluid dynamics (CFD). In this paper, an upward seepage flow of fluid is modelled by CFD based on the modified Navier–Stokes equations, while soil particles are governed by DEM with their mutual interactions being computed through fluid-particle force models. The energy transformation from the potential state to kinetic forms during fluid flowing is discussed with respect to numerical (CFD-DEM) results and the energy conservation concepts. The results show that majority of the potential energy induced by fluid flows has lost due to frictional mechanisms, while only a small amount of energy is needed to cause the soil to fluidize completely. The contribution of rotational and translational components to the total kinetic energy of particles, and their changing roles during soil fluidization is also presented. The presented paper shows a hypothetical large solar farm that would be the only source of electricity for the entire country. The energy crisis in Europe raises the question of whether it is possible to supply an electrical system based only on renewable energy sources. What should the surface area of the solar panels be in a hypothetical large solar farm to power the entire country? In this work, we will show what requirements must be met to make this feasible. Very important differences between the installed power capacity in a coal-fired or nuclear power plant and a solar power plant are discussed. The article presents calculations of the surface area of photovoltaic panels in that solar farm for four exemplary countries in Central Europe: Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. These studies are particularly important for Poland, whose electrical system is still mainly based on coal-fired power plants. The hypothetical solar farm could, in practice, take the form of dozens of solar power plants located in different parts of the country. Establishing conditions that meet climate requirements should be one of the most important goals of the whole world in order to protect against the negative effects of climate change. Without cooperation and considerable commitment from everyone, it is possible that these negative effects will worsen. The implementation of the Energy Policy from now until 2050 should facilitate the transformation of the coal-based power system toward a more sustainable and diversified mix of energy sources. Financial investments in the countries analyzed in this paper create real opportunities and changes for the transition toward renewable energy sources (RES), but there is criticism concerning the insufficient speed of change and the costs of the transformation for society. The dominant emphasis on the optimum selection of energy sources creates conflicts, especially in democratic decision-making. Resource management is both incremental and participatory, and while decisions are strongly based on science, the decision-making process is rarely rational or comprehensive. It is difficult to estimate environmental costs, especially because there is no method for comparing the many criteria between the different energy sources since there are differences in the energy efficiency results obtained in different areas. Public opinion is of great importance and it has a huge influence on the development of the development strategies and policies that are undertaken. Therefore, as part of our analysis, we conducted research using a questionnaire to obtain opinions on fundamental issues regarding the climate and energy strategies that have been adopted in the EU. This was important for achieving the main goal of this article, which is a multidimensional analysis of activities aimed at adapting the national economy to the EU strategies that are responsible for reaching the energy and climate goals by 2050. The low-emission energy transformation is aimed at introducing significant changes for the entire economy while at the same time ensuring the implementation of the so-called European triad of goals (energy security, energy competitiveness and climate protection), which often contradict each other in practice. The aims of the paper are to identify and assess the determinants of transition to renewable and sustainable energy development in Azerbaijan and Poland. Both countries have a clear target to increase the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the gross final energy consumption, i.e. Poland in the National Energy and Climate Plan for the years 2021–2030 declares that it wishes to achieve 21–23% by 2030 (total consumption in electricity, heating and cooling as well as for transport purposes). But there are currently significant producers and consumers of conventional energy carriers, respectively coal and oil, and these fuels ensure an appropriate level of energy security and production stability. Moreover, in Poland, the mining sector plays a very important social role, whereas the oil industry in Azerbaijan creates significant budget revenue. Therefore, even with stronger EU and worldwide climate policy and a decreasing cost of cleaner forms of energy, there are many challenges and obstacles for such countries in increasing energy from RES associated with energy security, efficiency, existing infrastructure, competitiveness and social aspects. In order to identify best practices for the transition to decarbonisation, the availability of energy resources, energy market structures, national strategies and policies were compared using PESTEL analysis. This study focuses on the results obtained by the transformation of acoustic energy in the form of vibrations into electrical energy. The vibrations are transmitted from outdoors through a window glass covered with piezoelectric material. Only one side of the window glass is covered with piezoelectric material at certain positions. The paper also presents a mathematical model to describe the transformation of acoustic energy into electrical energy. The results obtained from the numerical experiments are used to determine the dimensions of the piezoelectric film and their optimum positions on the glass for electricity generation. The correct placement of piezoelectric material on the glass generates electrical energy of approximately 10 mV. The use of smart materials in window glass allows the management of acoustic energy.
