Automatically detecting the wet/dry shoreline from remote sensing imagery has many benefits for beach management in coastal areas by enabling managers to take measures to protect wildlife during high water events. This paper proposes the use of a modified HED (Holistically-Nested Edge Detection) architecture to create a model for automatic feature identification of the wet/dry shoreline and to compute its elevation from the associated DSM (Digital Surface Model). The model is generalizable to several beaches in Texas and Florida. The data from the multiple beaches was collected using UAS (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems). UAS allow for the collection of high-resolution imagery and the creation of the DSMs that are essential for computing the elevations of the wet/dry shorelines. Another advantage of using UAS is the flexibility to choose locations and metocean conditions, allowing to collect a varied dataset necessary to calibrate a general model. To evaluate the performance and the generalization of the AI model, we trained the model on data from eight flights over four locations, tested it on the data from a ninth flight, and repeated it for all possible combinations. The AP and F1-Scores obtained show the success of the model's prediction for the majority of cases, but the limitations of a pure computer vision assessment are discussed in the context of this coastal application. The method was also assessed more directly, where the average elevations of the labeled and AI predicted wet/dry shorelines were compared. The absolute differences between the two elevations were, on average, 2.1 cm, while the absolute difference of the elevations' standard deviations for each wet/dry shoreline was 2.2 cm. The proposed method results in a generalizable model able to delineate the wet/dry shoreline in beach imagery for multiple flights at several locations in Texas and Florida and for a range of metocean conditions. This paper presents a novel Lasso Logistic Regression model based on feature-based time series data to determine disease severity and when to administer drugs or escalate intervention procedures in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Advanced features were extracted from highly enriched and time series vital sign data of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, including oxygen saturation readings, and with a combination of patient demographic and comorbidity information, as inputs into the dynamic feature-based classification model. Such dynamic combinations brought deep insights to guide clinical decision-making of complex COVID-19 cases, including prognosis prediction, timing of drug administration, admission to intensive care units, and application of intervention procedures like ventilation and intubation. The COVID-19 patient classification model was developed utilizing 900 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in a leading multi-hospital system in Texas, United States. By providing mortality prediction based on time-series physiologic data, demographics, and clinical records of individual COVID-19 patients, the dynamic feature-based classification model can be used to improve efficacy of the COVID-19 patient treatment, prioritize medical resources, and reduce casualties. The uniqueness of our model is that it is based on just the first 24 hours of vital sign data such that clinical interventions can be decided early and applied effectively. Hurricanes are one of the most disastrous natural phenomena occurring on Earth that cause loss of human lives and immense damage to property. A damage assessment method has been proposed for damage caused to buildings due to Hurricane Harvey that hit the Texas region in the year 2017. The aim of our study is to predict if there is any damage to the buildings present in the postdisaster satellite images. Principal component analysis has been used for the visualization of data. The VGG16 model has been used for extracting features from the input images. K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, and XGBoost classification techniques have been used for classification of the images whose features have been extracted from VGG16. Best accuracy of 97% is obtained by KNN classifier for the balanced test set, and accuracy of 96% is obtained by logistic regression for the unbalanced test set. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
