Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, have limited ability to synthesize Ω-3 fatty acids. The ccβA-msElovl2 transgene containing masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, elongase gene driven by the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, β-actin promoter was inserted into the channel catfish melanocortin-4 receptor (mc4r) gene site using the two-hit two-oligo with plasmid (2H2OP) method. The best performing sgRNA resulted in a knockout mutation rate of 92%, a knock-in rate of 54% and a simultaneous knockout/knock-in rate of 49%. Fish containing both the ccβA-msElovl2 transgene knock-in and mc4r knockout (Elovl2) were 41.8% larger than controls at 6 months post-hatch (p = 0.005). Mean eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) levels in Elov2 mutants and mc4r knockout mutants (MC4R) were 121.6% and 94.1% higher than in controls, respectively (p = 0.045; p = 0.025). Observed mean docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) and total EPA + DHA content was 32.8% and 45.1% higher, respectively, in Elovl2 transgenic channel catfish than controls (p = 0.368; p = 0.025). To our knowledge this is the first example of genome engineering to simultaneously target transgenesis and knock-out a gene in a commercially important aquaculture species for multiple improved performance traits. Glacier retreat is rapidly transforming some watersheds, with ramifications for water supply, ecological succession, important species such as Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), and cultural uses of landscapes. To advance a more holistic understanding of the evolution of proglacial landscapes, we integrate multiple lines of knowledge starting in the early 1900s with contemporary data from the Taaltsux̱éi (Tulsequah) Watershed in British Columbia, Canada. Our objectives were to: 1) synthesize recent historical geography and Indigenous Knowledge, including glacier dynamics, and hydrology; 2) describe the limnology of a proglacial lake; 3) quantify decadal-scale downstream physical floodplain change; and 4) characterize riverine physical, chemical, and biological differences relative to distance from the proglacial lake. Since 1982, the Tulsequah Glacier has receded 0.07 km/yr, exposing a cold, deep, and growing proglacial lake. The downstream floodplain is rapidly changing; satellite imagery analysis revealed a 14 % increase in vegetation from 2003 to 2017 and Indigenous Knowledge described increases in vegetation and wildlife habitat over the last century. Contemporary measurements of physical-chemical water properties differed across sites representing the upper and lower watershed, and mainstem and off-channel habitats. Catches of juvenile salmonids in the upper watershed (closer to the glacier) were mostly limited to warmer, clearer groundwater-fed channels, whereas in the lower watershed there were salmonids in both groundwater-fed and mainstem habitats. There was limited zooplankton taxa diversity from the proglacial lake and benthic macroinvertebrates in the river. Collectively, our synthesis suggests that the transformation of proglacial landscapes experiencing rapid ice loss can be influenced by interlinked abiotic processes of glacier retreat, lake formation, and altered hydrology, as well as corresponding biological processes such as beaver repopulation, wetland formation, and riparian vegetation growth. Microplastics are increasingly prevalent in marine systems and are a growing concern as a marine pollutant and contaminant with consequences for high trophic level consumers, including humans. Given evidence that links plastics to degraded ecosystem functioning and organismal health, there is increased interest in understanding the prevalence, fate and consequences of marine plastics. Microplastics contain and absorb harmful chemicals which may serve as endocrine disruptors and have negative implications for growth, reproductive health, and longevity. To expand current knowledge on microplastics in coastal marine ecosystems and the potential for biomagnification in marine food webs, we conducted stomach analyses of microplastics in Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), an important prey for salmon. Prevalence of microplastics was substantial; 77 % of all salmon and 25 % of all sand lance stomachs contained at least one microplastic. Fish were sampled at multiple sites throughout the inland Salish Sea, including beaches and sediment bedforms for Pacific sand lance and open-water pelagic habitat for Pacific salmon. Pacific sand lance sampled at beach sites had more microplastics compared to those sampled in subtidal sediments and there were more plastics in sand lance at a protected beach site as compared to an exposed beach site. Prevalence of plastics in salmon differed according to species and included analyses of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch); plastics were predominantly fibers in all species, though there were relatively higher rates of ingestion of films and particles in Chinook. Comparisons between plastic concentrations and stomach fullness indicated a slight negative trend, suggesting that plastics may be retained. Pacific salmon transfer large quantities of material to tributaries during their spawning migrations, including carcass tissue and labile nutrients but also persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals. We conducted a Before-After-Control-Intervention experiment by adding salmon carcasses and eggs to a Michigan (USA) stream that had never received inputs from non-native salmon to understand the bioaccumulation and persistence of biotransported contaminants. Our experimental outcomes were compared to previous studies using meta-analysis. Coincident with the introduction of salmon, the PCB and DDE burden of resident trout significantly increased. However, we did not observe changes in total mercury (Hg). Two years after the salmon addition experiment concluded, resident trout POP concentrations had returned to pre-addition levels, with no difference between the treatment and control reaches. Analysis of effect sizes suggested that the contaminant response observed in our experiment is consistent with field survey observations. Our study suggested that the consumption of salmon eggs drove the increase in POP burden of resident trout while Hg bioaccumulation was influenced by watershed sources. The frequency of dissolved oxygen depletion events (hypoxia) in coastal aquatic ecosystems has risen dramatically since the late 20th century, yet the causes and consequences of hypoxia for some culturally and economically important species remain poorly understood. In rivers, oxygen depletion can be caused by high densities of spawning Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) consuming oxygen faster than can be replaced by reaeration. This process may be exacerbated when salmon densities are artificially inflated, such as when hatchery-origin salmon stray into rivers instead of returning to hatcheries. In Southeast Alaska, hatchery salmon production has increased rapidly since the 1970s, with over 553 million chum salmon (O. keta) and 64 million pink salmon (O. gorbuscha) released in 2021 alone. Straying is pervasive in streams with outlets <25 km from nearshore marine hatchery release sites. Using a previously ground-truthed mechanistic model of dissolved oxygen dynamics, we examined how water temperature and low-flow channel hydraulics contribute to hypoxia vulnerability. We then applied the model to predict hypoxia vulnerability for watersheds within 25 km of hatchery salmon release points, where straying salmon spawner densities are expected to be higher and promote dissolved oxygen depletion. Our model predicted that low-gradient stream reaches, regardless of water temperature, are the most prone to hypoxia due to low reaeration rates. Our spatial analysis determined that nearly 17,000 km of anadromous-accessible stream reaches are vulnerable to high densities of hatchery-origin salmon based on 2021 release sites. The toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in aquatic organisms has been extensively studied, but little information is available on the effects associated with their interaction with other contaminants. In this context, the in vitro effects of co-exposure of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and ZnO NPs on fish-derived cells were investigated. A selection of concentrations was tested in single and binary exposures: CPF (0.312 - 75 mg/L) and ZnO NPs (10 - 100 mg/L). Cytotoxicity was measured using commonly used cellular endpoints: Alamar Blue/CFDA-AM for viability and plasma membrane integrity, NRU for lysosomal disruption and MTT for mitochondrial function. In addition, specific mechanisms of toxicity for CPF and ZnO NPs were tested: acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and ROS generation, respectively. AChE was by far the most sensitive assay for single exposure to CPF. There was no concentration-response relationship for ROS after single exposure to ZnO NPs, but 10 mg/L produced significant effects only for this cellular endpoint. Co-exposure of CPF with 10 m/L of ZnO NPs produced significant effects in almost all endpoints tested, which were enhanced by co-exposure with 100 mg/L of ZnO NPs. AChE testing of additional co-exposures with bulk ZnO, together with the application of the Independent Action (IA) prediction model, which allowed us to draw more in-depth conclusions on the toxicological behavior of the mixture. Synergism was observed at 0.625 mg/L CPF concentration and antagonism at 5 mg/L CPF in mixtures containing 100 mg/L of both ZnO NPs and bulk ZnO. However, more cases of synergism between CPF and ZnO NPs occurred at intermediate CPF concentrations, demonstrating that nano-sized particles have a more toxic interaction with CPF than bulk ZnO. Fish from commercially farmed stocks are often released into the natural environment to supplement wild populations. This practice is often applied to salmonid fish as they are an essential fishery resource and also used for recreational angling. However, farmed fish tend to show lower survival rates after release than wild fish. For this reason, the release of semi-wild fish is increasingly used in Japan; these fish are generated using female fish from domesticated stocks and male fish of wild origin. The survival rate of released semi-wild fish is higher than that of farmed fish, but the reason for this is unknown. This study compared the metabolism and swimming performance of semi-wild and farmed masu salmon (Oncorynchus masou). The analyses showed that resting metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and swimming speeds that minimize energy costs of travel (optimal swimming speed) were higher in semi-wild fish than in farmed fish. Critical swimming speed did not differ significantly between the two groups of fish. Semi-wild fish with high RMR may have a social status advantage over farmed fish because a previous study reported that SMR, which is the value closest to basal metabolism significantly affects feeding motivation. This means that individuals with higher social status may be more motivated to feed. The present study aimed to assess the biotransport of POPs, including OCPs and PCBs, by Pacific salmon (genus Oncorhynchus) on the northwestern Pacific Ocean. In 2008-2012, the Amur River basin, the eastern Kamchatka, and the mainland coast of the Sea of Okhotsk received the largest amounts of pesticides. In 2018, the transport of OCPs to the Russian northwestern Pacific reached only 1 kg, and the total OCP levels in muscles of fish from this region were significantly lower than in previous years. The average concentration of PCBs for all species under study differed from that of OCPs, with the highest concentration recorded from sockeye salmon. In 2018, pink salmon brought the largest amount of PCBs to the Russian northwestern Pacific. In arid ecosystems, available water is a critical, yet limited resource for human consumption, agricultural use, and ecosystem processes-highlighting the importance of developing management strategies to meet the needs of multiple users. Here, we evaluated how water availability influences stream thermal regimes and life-history expressions of Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi) in the arid Truckee River basin in the western United States. We integrated air temperature and stream discharge data to quantify how water availability drives stream temperature during annual spawning and rearing of Lahontan cutthroat trout. We then determined how in situ stream discharge and temperature affected adult spawning migrations, juvenile growth opportunities, and duration of suitable thermal conditions. Air temperatures had significant, large effects (+) on stream temperature across months; the effects of discharge varied across months, with significant effects (-) during May through August, suggesting increased discharge can help mitigate temperatures during seasonally warm months. Two models explained adult Lahontan cutthroat trout migration, and both models indicated that adult Lahontan cutthroat trout avoid migration when temperatures are warmer (~ > 12 °C) and discharge is higher (~ > 50 m 3 *s -1 ). Juvenile size was best explained by a quadratic relationship with cumulative degree days (CDD; days>4 °C) as size increased with increasing CDDs but decreased at higher CDDs. We also found an interaction between CDDs and discharge explaining juvenile size: when CDDs were low, higher discharge was associated with larger size, but when CDDs were high, higher discharge was associated with smaller size. Stream temperatures also determined the duration of juvenile rearing, as all juvenile emigration ceased at temperatures >24.4 °C. Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. hatcheries in British Columbia (BC) have been the major activity of the Salmonid Enhancement Program since 1977. However, the present diminished abundance of Pacific salmon and loss of fisheries in BC called for a review of hatchery effectiveness. The Pacific Salmon Foundation conducted a review resulting in 15 reports publicly available on the Pacific Salmon Foundation marine science website. The review includes evaluations of effectiveness of hatchery production, evidence of interactions with natural salmon populations (including rebuilding natural populations with hatchery‐produced salmon), and future opportunities via genomics. Beyond the estimation of juvenile production and contribution to catches and spawning escapements, the ability to assess effectiveness was limited. The assessments of interactions provided a few examples of positive outcomes, but most were negative. The lack of comparative assessments in purely wild populations seriously limits interpretations of hatchery–wild interactions. Future evaluations of the hatchery effectiveness require more quantitative and integrated assessments of hatchery and wild salmon, open data sharing for public review or research, and related studies could benefit from application of new genomic technologies. This paper presents recommendations to address these needs and calls for regularized reviews of the Salmonid Enhancement Program and its net value to sustainability of BC's Pacific salmon. Aquatic systems are warming and exceeding upper thermal limits (UTLs) for many fish species, yet understanding how they inform resilience to climate change is challenging. Using Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as a model, we conducted a systematic review involving 168 papers investigating UTL in five species. We found considerable variation in UTL among species, within species and across life stages; largely attributed to methodological approaches (e.g. CTmax/UILT, Aerobic/Cardiac Scope, Thermal Migration Barriers, Rearing Mortality, Thermal Preference/Avoidance). Given that each method has strengths and weaknesses owing to logistics, time scale and ecological realism, we offer a new framework for assessing vulnerability to warming that stresses the importance of considering UTL metrics in the context of intended use (i.e. the development of management guidelines, projections of future persistence and survival) and what aspect (physiological or behavioural) of thermal response a metric investigates. Comparing studies with identical UTL approaches revealed that within species, UTL was higher for populations historically encountering higher temperatures—suggesting local thermal adaptation. Within populations, UTL differed across the lifecycle, being highest in fry and lowest in embryo and migrating adults, but this was not universal. For spawning Pacific salmon, UTL has not been assessed and few studies have examined estuarine and marine stages. Ultimately, this data gap limits the life‐history thermal perspectives that can be drawn and may indicate a broader gap for all fishes, given that Pacific salmon are among the most well‐studied species. Our framework illustrates the inherent and methodological inconsistencies in UTL and offers a guide for how thermal limits can best be used to assess the warming tolerance and vulnerability of fishes. Introduction: Soybean lecithin (SBL) is usually added to aquafeed as a phospholipids source because aquatic animals including crustaceans and fish cannot synthesize phospholipids. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different levels of dietary soybean lecithin (a source of phospholipid) on the antioxidant defense system of female and male broodstock, ovum, eggs and the first stage swimming larvae of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Materials and methods: For this purpose, fish were fed four isoproteic and isolipidic diets containing graded levels of soybean lecithin (SBL) as a source of phospholipid (including 0, 2, 4 and 6%) for 190 days. At the end of the experiment, the samples of serum, ovum, egg and larvae were collected for antioxidant activity of CAT, SOD and MDA analyses. Results and discussion: The results obtained showed that 4-6% dietary SBL supplementation significantly increased the antioxidant enzymes activity, including catalase and superoxide dismutase in the fish blood serum, eggs, and larvae compared to the control. On the other hand, MDA level in the control group was higher than in the other treatments (p<0.05). Thus, considering the data on improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes, it is recommended to include SBL at 4-6% in rainbow trout broodstock diet. Conclusion: It is concluded that an optimal lecithin content in the diet of rainbow trout broodstock can lead to improving quality of ova and larval immune system. For almost 200 years, the taxonomy of cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii), a salmonid native to Western North America, has been in flux as ichthyologists and fisheries biologists have tried to describe the diversity within these fishes. Starting in the 1950s, Robert Behnke reexamined the cutthroat trout and identified 14 subspecies based on morphological traits, Pleistocene events, and modern geographic ranges. His designations became instrumental in recognizing and preserving the remaining diversity of cutthroat trout. Over time, molecular techniques (i.e. karyotypes, allozymes, mitochondrial DNA, SNPs, and microsatellite arrays) have largely reinforced Behnke's phylogenies, but have also revealed that some relationships are consistently weakly supported. To further resolve these relationships, we generated de novo transcriptomes for nine cutthroat subspecies, as well as a Bear River Bonneville form and two Colorado River lineages (blue and green). We present phylogenies of these subspecies generated from multiple sets of orthologous genes extracted from our transcriptomes. We confirm many of the relationships identified in previous morphological and molecular studies, as well as discuss the importance of significant differences apparent in our phylogenies from these studies within a geological perspective. Specific findings include three distinct clades: (1) Bear River Bonneville form and Yellowstone cutthroat trout; (2) Bonneville cutthroat trout (n = 2); and (3) Greenback and Rio Grande cutthroat trout. We also identify potential gene transfer between Bonneville cutthroat trout and a population of Colorado River green lineage cutthroat trout. Over the last 10 years, the spawning population of invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) has increased in the river systems in northern Norway to a level that is causing concern about their impact on endemic fauna and ecosystem processes. The scale of transfer of pink salmon carcasses into the terrestrial ecosystem is likely to be a key determinant of terrestrial impact. Bears (Ursus sp.) are responsible for most such transfers in North America but are rare in Norway. The white‐tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is common however, and a candidate to be a main cause of such transfers. To evaluate this hypothesis, data on the abundance of white‐tailed eagles and pink salmon were collected along the river Skallelv in northern Norway in 2021, a year the pink salmon spawned in the river, and in 2022, a year no pink salmon spawned in the river. The abundance of white‐tailed eagles along the river was much higher the year pink salmon spawned in the river. Furthermore, white‐tailed eagles were observed aggregating and catching pink salmon where and when pink salmon were present at the spawning and post‐spawning stages. Based on our observations, we suggest that the white‐tailed eagle is the main species involved in the transport of pink salmon from the river into the riparian zone in northern Norway and that other scavengers, in particular the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and common raven (Corvus corax), play an important role in transporting pink salmon carcasses from the riparian zone to the wider terrestrial ecosystem. The impressive †Oncorhynchus rastrosus of the Pacific Northwest's Miocene and Pliocene eras was the largest salmonid ever to live. It sported a hypertrophied premaxilla with a pair of enlarged teeth which the original describers reconstructed as projecting ventrally into the mouth, leading them to assign the species to "Smilodonichthys," a genus now in synonymy. Through CT reconstruction of the holotype and newly collected specimens, we demonstrate that the famed teeth projected laterally like tusks, not ventrally like sabers or fangs. We also expand the original description to characterize sexual dimorphism in mature, breeding individuals. Male and female †Oncorhynchus rastrosus differ in the form of the vomer, rostro-dermethmoid-supraethmoid, and dentary, much as do other extant species of Oncorhynchus. Male specimens possess a more elongate vomer than do females, and female vomers have concave ventral surfaces and prominent median dorsal keels. The dentary of females has no evidence of a kype, though some specimens of †O. rastrosus have a non-uniform density mesial to the tooth bed, which we interpret as a male kype. Unlike extant Oncorhynchus, male and female †O. rastrosus do not differ in premaxilla shape. Because male and females possess hypertrophied premaxillae and lateral premaxillary spikes, the former common name "Sabertoothed Salmon" no longer reflects our understanding of the species' morphology. Accordingly, we redub †O. rastrosus the Spike-Toothed Salmon and postulate that its spikes were multifunctional, serving as defense against predators, in agonism against conspecifics, and as a practical aid to nest construction. The value of estuaries as nursery habitat for juvenile anadromous salmon is likely variable across estuaries and species. Here, we compiled published empirical data on juvenile salmon estuarine growth and residency. We aimed to quantify the range and variability of these aspects for five species of Pacific salmon across estuaries, methodologies, and life histories. The majority of studies focused on Chinook and coho salmon, largely from their southern range. While there is some evidence of higher growth in wild-origin fish relative to hatchery-origin fish, the wide range of metrics employed made identification of trends among life histories challenging, and unification of reporting could strengthen future research. Different salmon life histories exhibited different residencies, with natural-origin subyearling coho exhibiting the longest mean residency (∼3 months) and 1+ sockeye salmon exhibiting the shortest (3.7 days). Across life histories, hatchery fish exhibited much shorter estuary residencies than wild fish. Collectively, our review highlights key patterns in salmon estuary ecology, identifies knowledge gaps, and lays the foundation for future studies to quantify the importance of estuaries for specific salmon. As Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) decline across much of their range, it is imperative to further develop minimally invasive tools to quantify population abundance. One such advancement, trans‐generational genetic mark–recapture (tGMR), uses parentage analysis to estimate the size of wild populations. Our study examined the precision and accuracy of tGMR through a comparison to a traditional mark–recapture estimate for Chilkat River Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) in Southeast Alaska. We examined how adult sampling location and timing impact tGMR by comparing estimates derived using samples collected in the lower river mainstem to those using samples obtained in upriver spawning tributaries. Results indicated that tGMR estimates using a representative sample of mainstem adults were most concordant with, and 3% more precise than, the traditional mark–recapture estimate for this stock. Importantly, the timing and location of adult sampling were found to impact abundance estimates, depending on what proportion of the population dies or moves to unsampled areas between downriver and upriver sampling events. Additionally, we identified potential sources of bias in tGMR arising from violations of key assumptions using a novel individual‐based modeling framework, parameterized with empirical values from the Chilkat River. Simulations demonstrated that increased reproductive success and sampling selectivity of older, larger individuals, introduced negative bias into tGMR estimates. Pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum, 1792), a native of the North Pacific Ocean, is an invasive fish species rapidly expanding in the North Atlantic, the adjacent waters of the Arctic Ocean, and rivers in their watersheds. We investigated the species composition of parasites and the structure of parasite communities of the introduced pink salmon in Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea in 2021. The parasites were identified using morphological and genetic methods. A total of 14 parasite species were recorded. The core species of the parasitic fauna of the introduced pink salmon in the Kandalaksha Bay were Clistobothrium sp., ʽDiphyllobothriumʼ spp., Scolex polymorphus Rudolphi, 1819 (plerocercoids), Brachyphallus crenatus (Rudolphi, 1802), Derogenes varicus (Müller, 1784), Lecithaster salmonis Yamaguti, 1934 (adults), Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809) sensu stricto (juvenile III), and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) (juveniles III and IV). We provided the first evidence that the Pacific genetic lineage of A. simplex sensu stricto occurs in European marine waters. In 2021, there was a noticeable increase in the mean abundance of the third-stage juveniles of Anisakis in the White Sea pink salmon compared to the period of 1990s-early 2000s. An analysis of the biological value of chum salmon showed that, in terms of the balance of the amino-acid composition of the protein, chum salmon with spawning changes is not inferior to chum salmon without spawning changes (silver chum salmon). A higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in total lipids, including omega-3, was noted in chum salmon with spawning changes compared to silver chum salmon. The metabolic profile of chum salmon samples obtained by NMR spectroscopy showed that the levels of Asp, Glu, and glucose markedly increase during spawning migration, which is explained by the limited feeding of fish. The calculated total taste index of silver chum salmon was 4.06 ± 0.11, and that of chum salmon with spawning changes was 3.46 ± 0.09. Therefore, according to taste sensations, the silver chum salmon has a richer taste compared to the chum salmon with spawning changes. The results of the analysis of the nutritional value and metabolic profile of chum salmon with spawning changes can be used in the manufacture of minced fish for the subsequent production of specialized food products by introducing functional additives that balance the consistency and color, as well as in production of functional food additives. The objective of this research is to assess the breeding value of male individuals and calculate heritability values for body weight and body length at 12 months of age in the rainbow trout population in the Republic of Serbia. The study utilized data on the physical development of trout obtained through the Center for Fisheries and Applied Hydrobiology "Mali Dunav", Experimental Estate "Radmilovac" of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade (CEFAH) Breeding Program for rainbow trout in the Republic of Serbia. The fish were raised in individual tanks under tightly controlled conditions at the CEFAH, until they reached 5 months of age. At this point, the fish were marked (with PIT tags Norway) and transferred to commercial fish farms, where monitoring of their production results continued. To estimate the breeding value for body weight and body length of rainbow trout at 12 months of age, we analyzed data collected between 2016 and 2020, which included a total of 2014 individuals. The breeding values were estimated using a sire model. The mixed model incorporated fixed effects (spawning year and sex) and a random effect for the individual sire. The heritability estimate at 12 months of age was 0.44 for body weight, and 0.45 for body length. The breeding values were estimated for 107 sires, with body weight values ranging from −37.83 to +37.83 g and body length values ranging from −14.00 to +14.00 mm. The substantial variation observed within the studied rainbow trout population suggests the potential for further genetic improvement. The high heritability values confirm that further selection can be based on the phenotype. The inclusion of high-quality and validated males in breeding programs will contribute to the enhancement of production characteristics within the existing rainbow trout population in Serbia. The homing behaviour of salmon is a remarkable natural phenomenon, critical for shaping the ecology and evolution of populations yet the spatial scale at which it occurs is poorly understood. This study investigated the spatial scale and mechanisms driving homing as depicted by spawning site‐choice behaviour in pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Molecular pedigree analyses of over 30,000 adult spawners in four streams revealed that pink salmon exhibit fine‐scale site fidelity within a stream, returning to within <100 m of their parents. Homing behaviours were driven in part by a salinity gradient between intertidal and freshwater environments, with individuals incubated in freshwater environments more than twice as likely to spawn upstream of tidal influence than those incubated in the intertidal. Our findings challenge the traditional view that pink salmon populations are genetically and phenotypically homogenous due to their short freshwater residency as juveniles and high rates of dispersal as returning adults (i.e. straying). This study has important implications for rates of inbreeding, local adaptation and gene flow within populations, and is particularly relevant to the management of salmon hatcheries, given the high incidence of hatchery‐origin pink salmon, reared in freshwater hatchery environments, that stray into wild populations of Prince William Sound. Lakes provide important habitat for salmonids that may use them as a primary feeding area between periods of reproduction. The seasonal changes in vertical thermal structure in lakes can affect the distribution of salmonids on seasonal and diel time scales as they search for, consume, and digest prey that also exploits the water column's distribution of food, temperature and light. Our goal was to analyse the vertical distribution of wild, native coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) in Lake Washington on daily and seasonal time scales. This lake is stratified in the summer and isothermal in winter, allowing us to compare vertical movements between periods with and without thermal structure in water 50 m deep. We predicted that trout would be deeper in the water column during stratified months and shallower during isothermal months, and shallower at night than in the day. Overall, the trout showed these patterns in the depths and temperatures they occupied, tending to be within or below the thermocline in the summer but not in the coolest water available, and closer to the surface when the lake was isothermal. The trout were also closer to the surface at night and deeper during the day. The vertical range of these diel movements shifted with the seasons–deepest in October, as the thermocline deepened and weakened, and shallowest in January when the lake was isothermal. These seasonal and diel vertical distribution patterns by the trout optimise metabolism for growth, and facilitate feeding on planktivorous fishes that also show seasonal and diel vertical distribution changes. The size of chum salmon juveniles is crucial to their survival. In order to understand the population status and migration patterns of juvenile chum salmon in the waters of the Amur River in China, this study investigated the status of juvenile chum salmon resources and their basic biological characteristics in the Amur River and the Ussuri River in China. The results showed that the average catch per unit effort (CPUE) of chum salmon in river margins was 0.140 ind·10−3 m3 for the Amur River and 0.255 ind·10−3 m3 for the Ussuri River. Chum salmon migrate downstream, mainly in mid-May in the Amur River and in early May in the Ussuri River, and no fish was caught in the rivers after June. Most chum salmon migrated when the water was between 10 and 14 °C. The average FL (fork length) and BW (body weight) of the Amur River samples were 37.1 ± 2.9 mm and 0.42 ± 0.09 g, respectively, while the Ussuri River samples' FL and BW were 34.9 ± 3.7 mm and 0.36 ± 0.08 g, respectively. The empty stomach rate of the samples was zero, and the prey category of the samples was composed of fish, aquatic insects, copepods, and cladocerans, of which Ephemeroptera had the largest percentage index of relative importance (IRI%), with a value of 58.45%. The size of the downstream-migrating juvenile chum salmon in this study is similar to the size of those in some other rivers, and the CPUE varies depending on the river conditions. Salmon are an essential component of the ecosystem in Tsleil-Waututh Nation's traditional, ancestral, and contemporary unceded territory, centred on present-day Burrard Inlet, BC, Canada, where Tsleil-Waututh people have been harvesting salmon, along with a wide variety of other fishes, for millennia. Tsleil-Waututh Nation is a Coast Salish community that has called the Inlet home since time immemorial. This research assesses the continuity and sustainability of the salmon fishery at təmtəmíxʷtən, an ancestral Tsleil-Waututh settlement in the Inlet, over thousands of years before European contact (1792 CE). We apply Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis to 245 archaeological salmon vertebrae to identify the species that were harvested by the ancestral Tsleil-Waututh community that lived at təmtəmíxʷtən. The results demonstrate that Tsleil-Waututh communities consistently and preferentially fished for chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) over the period of almost 3,000 years. The consistent abundance indicates a sustainable chum salmon fishery over that time, and a strong salmon-to-people relationship through perhaps 100 generations. A new state space stock –recruitment (SR) model (XSR) was developed to treat observation errors in spawner and catch data, and nonstationarity in productivity for pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). Closed loop simulation was used to evaluate the management performance of XSR and compare its performance with that of a traditional SR model (TSR) and a Kalman Filter (KF). XSR produced higher expected catch than TSR and KF over a wide range of conditions. In some situations, TSR was preferred for reducing conservation concerns. However, large "outcome uncertainty" (OU) or implementation error in achieving desired management objectives can substantially reduce the management benefits of all assessment methods. Macrhybopsis tetranema and Oncorhynchus gilae are fish species endemic to the Southwestern United States. We present the complete mitochondrial genomes for these species. Each genome consisted of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and the control region (D-loop). Mitogenome lengths were 16,916 base pairs (bp) for M. tetranema, and 16,976 bp for O. gilae. The GC content was 41% for M. tetranema and 46% for O. gilae. A gelatin hydrolysate with a hydrolysis degree of 13.7% was generated using the skin gelatin of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) and papain-catalyzed enzymatic hydrolysis. The results of analysis demonstrated that four amino acids, namely Ala, Gly, Pro, and 4-Hyp, were the most abundant in the obtained gelatin hydrolysate with measured molar percentages ranging from 7.2% to 35.4%; more importantly, the four amino acids accounted for 2/3 of the total measured amino acids. However, two amino acids, Cys and Tyr, were not detected in the generated gelatin hydrolysate. The experimental results indicated that the gelatin hydrolysate at a dose of 50 µg/mL could combat etoposide-induced apoptosis in human fetal osteoblasts (hFOB 1.19 cells), causing a decrease in the total apoptotic cells from 31.6% to 13.6% (via apoptotic prevention) or 13.3% to 11.8% (via apoptotic reversal). Meanwhile, the osteoblasts exposed to the gelatin hydrolysate showed expression changes for 157 genes (expression folds > 1.5-fold), among which JNKK, JNK1, and JNK3 were from the JNK family with a 1.5–2.7-fold downregulated expression. Furthermore, the protein expressions of JNKK, JNK1, JNK3, and Bax in the treated osteoblasts showed a 1.25–1.41 fold down-regulation, whereas JNK2 expression was not detected in the osteoblasts. It is thus suggested that gelatin hydrolysate is rich in the four amino acids and has an in vitro antiapoptotic effect on etoposide-stimulated osteoblasts via mitochondrial-mediated JNKK/JNK(1,3)/Bax downregulation. Obtaining reliable information on the age structure of fish populations is important for making conservation and management decisions. We sought to evaluate precision and reader confidence in age estimates from scales (two body locations), sectioned fin rays (pectoral, pelvic, anal), and sectioned sagittal otoliths from Apache Trout Oncorhynchus apache (n = 78 fish) sampled from the East Fork White River, Arizona, in 2017. Two experienced readers without prior knowledge of fish length aged structures independently. Each reader provided a confidence rating of 0 (no confidence) to 3 (completely confident) as a measure of readability. Both readers were unable to estimate age from scales collected from the area just posterior to the insertion of the pectoral fin. We used scales removed from an area just dorsal to the lateral line and posterior to the dorsal fin in all analyses. Percentage of exact agreement between readers was highest for scales and otoliths (>72.0%) and lowest for fin rays (31.8–58.1%). Average confidence rating was highest for sectioned otoliths (mean ± SE, 2.1 ± 0.07), and lowest for anal fin rays (0.3 ± 0.06) and scales (0.7 ± 0.05). We compared consensus ages from otoliths to the other structures. Percentage of exact agreement with otolith age was low and varied from 21.6 to 35.7% among structures. Similarly, percentage of agreement within 1 y was also low among structures (58.0–70.2%). Scales consistently underestimated age of age-4 and older fish (based on otolith age), whereas fin rays tended to overestimate age of younger fish and underestimate age of older Apache Trout. Although sectioned otoliths require lethal sampling, they produced the most precise age estimates for Apache Trout with the highest reader confidence. We focused on developing an epidemic prevention method for circulating masu salmon aquaculture using the probiotic Lactococcus lactis strain K-C2. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of strain K-C2 against pathogens isolated from dead Yamame and masu salmon. First, we identified pathogenic bacteria that were isolated from dead masu salmon based on phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence and biological and biochemical characterization. The antibacterial activity of strain K-C2 against seven pathogenic strains isolated from dead masu salmon in this study and two strains of Aeromonas salmonicida previously isolated from dead Yamame was tested using a double agar plate method. The results of a BLAST search using 16S rRNA partial sequence data (1200–1300 bp) revealed that six of the former strains and one of the latter strains showed high similarity to Vibrio anguillarum and Tenacibaculum maritimum, respectively. Strain K-C2 showed antibacterial activity against all pathogenic bacteria. In this study, pathogenic bacteria were newly isolated from dead seawater-acclimated masu salmon, and strain K-C2 was found to have antibacterial effects against these pathogens. Blue sac disease (BSD) in salmonids results in the abnormal accumulation of ascites fluid and can often lead to mass mortality. However, the symptoms and causes of BSD remain poorly characterized. In the winters of 2015–2017, BSD was observed in chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta alevins at Hatchery-X in Hokkaido, Japan. We conducted histological observations of the visceral organs and analyzed nutrient concentrations [glucose (GC), triglyceride (TC), and protein (PC)] in liver, muscle, plasma, and ascites fluid. Several void spaces that appeared to leak body fluid in the liver were observed. Voids between Bowman's capsules and glomeruli were wider in the kidneys of diseased alevins than in normal alevins. Liver GC was significantly lower in diseased alevins than in normal alevins, and no differences were observed in muscle TC or PC. Plasma PC, plasma TC, and hematocrit were lower in diseased alevins than in normal alevins. No differences in the nutrient concentrations of plasma and ascites fluid were observed between diseased and normal alevins. BSD in chum salmon alevins might be due to impaired body fluid regulation and imbalances in the plasma component caused by lesions in the liver and kidneys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding age and growth of fishes is critical for making meaningful management decisions. Obtaining useful information is dependent on using the best structure (e.g., scale, otolith). The objective of this study was to evaluate precision and reader confidence in age estimates from sagittal otoliths (i.e., whole, sectioned) and scales for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri collected from Henrys Lake, Idaho. We also sought to compare growth estimates among structures sampled during annual gill net surveys in May 2019 and 2020. We removed sagittal otoliths and scales from 416 Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. Two readers without prior knowledge of fish length independently aged scales, whole otoliths, and sectioned otoliths. Each reader also provided a confidence rating of 0 (not confident) to 3 (completely confident). Percent exact agreement between readers was highest for sectioned otoliths (85.3%), followed by scales (68.5%) and whole otoliths (66.1%). Average confidence rating was highest for sectioned (mean ± SD = 2.2 ± 0.6) and whole (1.4 ± 0.5) otoliths and lowest for scales (1.0 ± 0.2). Among structures, percent exact agreement (i.e., consensus age) was highest between whole and sectioned otoliths (66.7%), followed by scales and sectioned otoliths (58.9%). Exact agreement was lowest between scales and whole otoliths (51.2%). Differences in back-calculated length at age estimates between sectioned otoliths and scales were minimal, particularly for ages 1–4. Although sectioned otoliths required more time to prepare than scales or whole otoliths, sectioned otoliths produced the most precise age estimates for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, with the highest reader confidence. Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) is an ecologically and economically important species widely distributed across the North Pacific Ocean. However, the population size of this fishery resource has declined globally. Identifying genetic integrity, diversity and structure, and phylogenetic relationships of wild populations of O. keta over an entire species' range is central for developing its effective conservation and management plans. Nevertheless, chum salmon from the Korean Peninsula, which are comprised of its southwestern range margins, have been overlooked. By using mtDNA control region and 10 microsatellite loci, we here assessed the genetic diversity and structure for 16 populations, including 10 wild and six hatchery populations, encompassing the species entire geographic range in South Korea. The analyses showed that genetic diversity is significantly higher for wild than for hatchery populations. Both marker sets revealed significant genetic differentiation between some local populations. Comparisons of six wild and their respective hatchery populations indicated that allele/haplotype frequencies considerably differ, perhaps due to a strong founder effect and/or homogenizing of hatchery populations for stocking practice. Despite its single admixed gene pool for the Korean chum salmon, some local populations housing their own unique lineages should be accorded with a high priority to safeguard their genetic integrities. The results of our comparative analyses of the Korean population with other North Pacific chum salmons (inhabiting regions of Japan, Russia, and North America) revealed a lower diversity but higher contribution to the overall species‐level genetic diversity, and also its unique genetic integrity. One of the risks faced by habitat restoration practitioners is whether habitats included in restoration planning will be used by the target species or, conversely, whether habitats excluded from restoration planning would have benefited the target species. With the goal of providing a quantitative decision‐making approach that represented varying levels of risk tolerance, we used multiple probability decision thresholds (PDT) to predict the range of occurrence for three anadromous fishes (Oncorhynchus spp.) in a watershed in southwestern Washington, USA. For each species, we compared the predicted range of occurrence to the distribution used for restoration planning and quantified the amount of habitat blocked by anthropogenic barriers. Coho salmon (O. kisutch) had the broadest predicted range of occurrence (3061.6–6357.9 km; 0.75–0.25 PDT), followed by steelhead trout (O. mykiss; 1828.8–2836.8 km) and chum salmon (O. keta; 1373.9–1629.1 km). For each species, the predicted range of occurrence was similar or greater than the distribution used for restoration planning, suggesting that the current plan may exclude habitats that would benefit each species. Coho salmon had the greatest percentage of habitat blocked by anthropogenic barriers, followed by steelhead trout and chum salmon, respectively. Modeling species distributions at multiple risk‐tolerance scenarios acknowledges uncertainty in restoration planning and allows practitioners to weigh the ecological benefits and budgetary constraints when considering locations for restoration. Few studies have examined the movement of adult Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. between the sea and rivers after they have entered a river. In this study, archival tags that recorded temperature and salinity were attached to pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) that had ascended one of four rivers in northern Japan, to examine their individual movement patterns among fresh, brackish, and salt water. Of 44 pink salmon tagged and released in the rivers, nine were recaptured in the same river where they had been tagged and released, four were recaptured in marine nearshore trap fisheries, and one was recaptured in a neighboring river from where it was tagged and released. Among the 14 recaptured tagged fish, abrupt changes in salinity records were found in seven tag records, indicating that tagged fish had returned to brackish or seawater. Six of the seven individuals were males, and the sex ratio was biased toward males when compared with all tag-released individuals. The results suggest that a substantial proportion of homing adult pink salmon may make short-term movements between fresh and saltwater during their spawning migration. Analysis of the tag-recorded water temperatures showed significantly cooler riverine temperatures compared with inferred temperatures of the coastal water (up to 20.5 °C). While many factors, including orienting behavior and male-biased dispersal, likely influenced the observed 'probing' behavior, I speculate that the temporal use of freshwaters rivers may be a thermoregulatory behavior to avoid high, stressful temperatures. North American salmon once ranged from ocean waters near the Arctic Circle southward to southern New England on the Atlantic and Mexico on the Pacific. The colonial and industrial transformation of rivers and oceans have led to extirpation or endangered status of many southern populations. Today, chronic anthropogenic stressors interact with climate change, which means that effective conservation must address changes in transformed ecosystems. Conservation goals are designed to recover both the species and their habitats. While seemingly congruent, habitat and fish management have different timetables due to speed of changes in climate, habitat, and biological processes relative to regulatory processes, habitat restoration, and project implementation. The Resist‐Accept‐Direct (RAD) framework facilitated exploration of ideas and actions to restore suitable conditions for salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act at their southern edge. Creative and big solutions are needed to recover salmon and RAD provided a way to examine conservation options to sustain salmon in an era of change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mainstem rivers are important for provisioning cold‐water fisheries and often support fluvial life histories that grow much larger than resident counterparts in tributaries. However, mainstem rivers are also warmer than tributaries during summer and more tightly coupled to regional climate. A key challenge is to understand how fluvial life histories cope with summer temperatures in mainstem rivers, both now and in a warmer future. Here, we outline three options: tolerance, exploitation of cool microhabitats, or migration to cooler tributaries. We quantified the relative prevalence of these responses in the wild using a Lagrangian approach. Specifically, we used temperature transmitting radio‐tags to track coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) habitat use across 100 km of the Willamette River, which exhibited a maximum temperature of 22°C. We found that 89.8% of fish stayed in the mainstem and tolerated high temperatures; 6.5% of the population exploited cool floodplain alcoves; and 3.7% moved into a cool tributary, the McKenzie River. We also found that on average, larger fish opted to use cold‐water refuge habitats rather than tolerate mainstem river temperatures. The expression of all three coping tactics suggests this population has adaptive capacity to respond to future warming. More work is needed to understand how the relative expression of these tactics change depending on the severity of heat stress or nontemperature attributes of mainstem, floodplain, and tributary habitat. Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are important to the ecology, economy, and cultures of the Pacific Northwest. Many populations of Pacific salmon in the Pacific Northwest are declining because of poor marine survival. We evaluated the role of Steller (Eumetopias jubatus) and California (Zalophus californianus) sea lions as predators of Pacific salmon. Roughly, half of the 1330 metric tons (t) of Pacific salmon eaten by Steller sea lions per year and of the 1220 t of Pacific salmon eaten by California sea lions per year in northwest Washington during 2010-2013 were coho salmon (O. kisutch). The response of Steller and California sea lions to the large run of pink salmon (O. gorbuscha) in 2011 was less than expected. Sea lions of these species rarely ate large (roughly ≥50 cm in total length) Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha), indicating that they have limited direct competition for prey with the southern resident distinct population segment of killer whales (Orcinus orca). Combined, California and Steller sea lions in northwest Washington consumed a mass of coho salmon similar to that landed by commercial fisheries in Washington State. More work on modeling the effect of the predation by California and Steller sea lions on salmon populations, particularly for coho salmon, is needed to better evaluate the conservation and productivity of Pacific salmon. Previous studies generally report that hatchery‐origin Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) have lower relative reproductive success (RRS) than their natural‐origin counterparts. We estimated the RRS of Pink Salmon (O. gorbuscha) in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska using incomplete pedigrees. In contrast to other RRS studies, Pink Salmon have a short freshwater life history, freshwater habitats in PWS are largely unaltered by development, and sampling was conducted without the aid of dams or weirs resulting in incomplete sampling of spawning individuals. Pink Salmon released from large‐scale hatchery programs in PWS have interacted with wild populations for more than 15 generations. Hatchery populations were established from PWS populations but have subsequently been managed as separate broodstocks. Gene flow is primarily directional, from hatchery strays to wild populations. We used genetic‐based parentage analysis to estimate the RRS of a single generation of stray hatchery‐origin Pink Salmon in two streams, and across the odd‐ and even‐year lineages. Despite incomplete sampling, we assigned 1745 offspring to at least one parent. Reproductive success (RS), measured as sampled adult offspring that returned to their natal stream, was significantly lower for hatchery‐ vs. natural‐origin parents in both lineages, with RRS ranging from 0.03 to 0.47 for females and 0.05 to 0.86 for males. Generalized linear modeling for the even‐year lineage indicated that RRS was lower for hatchery‐origin fish, ranging from 0.42 to 0.60, after accounting for sample date (run timing), sample location within the stream, and fish length. Our results strongly suggest that hatchery‐origin strays have lower fitness in the wild. The consequences of reduced RRS on wild productivity depend on whether the mechanisms underlying reduced RRS are environmentally driven, and likely ephemeral, or genetically driven, and likely persistent across generations. In chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) homed to the Sanriku region, Japan, most of the fish are matured in bays and spawn near river mouths in coastal short rivers; therefore, their upriver migration is extremely short, but their behavioural characteristics have remained unknown. Upriver migration in the Otsuchi River, a typical coastal river, was evaluated from behavioural and physiological aspects. Homing salmon tracked in Otsuchi Bay held in the inner bay for less than 1 day to more than 10 days before river entry. The varied holding duration was negatively correlated with plasma 17α, 20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (DHP) concentration, an indicator of maturation. After river entry, however, most fish were captured in weirs near the river mouths within 2 days regardless of the DHP concentration. Of the 34 fish released in the river, on the contrary, eighteen and five fish were seen next day in the main spawning sites located at c. 1.5 km upstream and in the branch creek, respectively, and 85% of the fish held position there until their death. The mean survival time of released fish was 5.8 days. Plasma DHP level suggested that preparations for spawning were already completed at the timing of the release. Taken together, homing salmon completed spawning preparation in the bay, and then they moved to their spawning sites immediately after river entry and spawned there during their short remaining life. Early life stages of Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) are at risk of exposure to the active ingredients of chemotherapeutant formulations (hydrogen peroxide [HP], azamethiphos [AZ], emamectin benzoate [EB], cypermethrin [CP] and deltamethrin [DM]) used to control sea lice in salmon aquaculture. LC50 values (95% confidence intervals) for acute 48-h water exposures in order of least to most toxic to seawater-adapted pink salmon fry were: HP (227 [138–418] mg/L), EB (1090 [676–2006] µg/L), AZ (80 [52–161] µg/L), CP (5.1 [3.0–10.5] µg/L), and DM (980 [640–1800] ng/L), and in subchronic 10-d lethality sediment exposure tests: EB (2065 [1384–3720] µg/kg), CP (97 [58–190] µg/kg), and DM (1035 [640–2000] ng/kg). Alterations in behaviour varied between chemicals; no chemical attracted pink salmon fry; fish avoided HP to a limited extent at 50 mg/L), as well as EB (300 µg/L), and AZ (50 µg/L). Significant concentration-dependent decreases in olfactory responsiveness to food extract were seen following AZ, CP and DM exposures that occurred at lower concentrations with longer exposure periods (10 µg/L, 0.5 µg/L and 100 ng/L thresholds at 7 d). Following 10-d sediment exposures, olfaction was only affected by CP exposure at 50 µg/kg. Significant decreases in swimming performance (Ucrit) occured for HP, AZ, CP and DM at concentrations as low as 100 mg/L, 10 µg/L, 2 µg/L and 200 ng/L, respectively. Global warming is changing the thermal habitat of cold-water freshwater fishes, which can lead to decreased fitness and survival and cause shifts in species distributions. The Alberta population of westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi) is listed as 'Threatened' under the Canadian Species at Risk Act. The major threats to the species are the alteration in habitat and water flow, competition and hybridization with non-native trout species and climate change. Here, we conducted (i) intermittent-flow respirometry experiments with adult native westslope cutthroat trout and non-native rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and (ii) critical thermal maximum experiments (CTmax) with adult westslope cutthroat trout to obtain valuable input data for species distribution models. For both species, standard metabolic rate (SMR) was lower at 10°C compared to 15°C and westslope cutthroat trout had higher SMR than rainbow trout. Although there were inter-specific differences in SMR, forced aerobic scope (using a standardized chase protocol) was different at 10°C, but no significant differences were observed at 15°C because of relative smaller differences in maximum metabolic rate between the species. CTmax of westslope cutthroat trout acclimated to 10°C was 27.0 ± 0.8°C and agitation temperature was 25.2 ± 1.0°C. Argulus coregoni Thorell, 1864 was collected from white-spotted char, Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas, 1814), redspotted masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae Jordan and McGregor, 1925, masu salmon, O. m. masou (Brevoort, 1856), and a hybrid between white-spotted char and masu salmon in mountain streams, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. The host’s body surface under and near the pectoral fins was the most common infection site for A. coregoni. The infected white-spotted char were caught at high elevations (461–873m) in the headwater streams. The infected individuals of the two masu salmon subspecies were mostly caught in the upper river reaches, but the elevations where they were caught were lower (237–733m and 660–707m, respectively) than those of the white-spotted char. Since A. coregoni is also known as a parasite of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846), in the middle and lower river reaches in the prefecture, this parasite utilizes different fish species as its hosts along a river course: white-spotted char and the two masu salmon subspecies serve as the hosts, respectively, in the headwater and the middle to lower sections of the upper reaches, but in the mid- and lower river reaches, ayu is the important host. Invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) has been present in variable, but low, numbers in Norwegian waters since c. 1960, but beginning in 2017 their numbers have exploded in rivers in northern Norway, with considerable numbers also recorded in rivers in southern Norway and other countries bordering the North Atlantic. Analysis of pink salmon scales from two rivers draining to the western Barents Sea showed declining growth during the first weeks after entering the sea, and some individuals even showed a pronounced growth arrest, based on detailed scale circulus analyses. This was followed by a period of growth increase and stability during late summer and autumn, which may reflect a transition to better food sources, as the fish migrate from coastal waters to the open ocean, and as they grow larger and can eat larger and more energy efficient food items. Growth declined to a minimum during winter. Fish body size at spawning was positively correlated with the distance from scale focus to the last winter circulus, as well as with the number of circuli. When dividing scale growth into three periods, better growth during the first period at sea was related to increased fish body length at spawning, but this early growth explained only a minor part (6%) of the variation in final body length. The reason for this may be large individual variation in growth combined with large mortality during the first weeks at sea. If mortality is selective, removing fish with poor growth may reduce a correlation between early growth and body size at spawning. Scale growth during late summer and early autumn explained more of the variation in fish length at spawning (27%). Hence, late summer and early autumn was likely an important period for marine growth and survival in the invasive pink salmon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
