Since its nascence, computational organization theory has predominantly relied on classical probability theory to model and simulate organizational properties. However, key assumptions of classical probability theory conflict with empirical observations of organizational behaviors and processes, thereby raising the question if an alternate theoretical basis for probabilistic modeling of organizations might improve the relevancy of computational organization research. In the context of the garbage can model of organizational decision-making, this paper provides two examples—order effects and system measurement—to illustrate the inadequacy of classical probability theory and to stimulate discussion on the merits of incorporating quantum probability theory in computational models. This paper recommends that future work explore the sensitivity of computational organization theory models to probability theories, the impacts associated theoretical assumptions might have on modeling and simulating dynamic organizational interdependencies, and the implications to community practices. Purpose: In China, engineering insurance has been questioned as not being beneficial as expected. This paper seeks to further understand how China's engineering insurance industry functions and to provide a macro perspective explanation for engineering insurance's underdevelopment. Design/methodology/approach: Three industrial organization hypotheses were extended to the engineering insurance context: structure conduct performance (SCP), relative market power (RMP) and efficiency structure (ES) hypotheses. This paper employed the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) bootstrap to test the hypotheses using panel data from 2008 to 2017. Findings: The results suggest that the SCP paradigm is validated in China's engineering insurance market, indicating a concentrated market where the welfare of consumers (e.g. owners, contractors and designers) may be eroded. Several factors are identified to have significant impacts on engineering insurers' performance, such as the investment return, percentage of engineering business, the ratio of outstanding claims, the number of large contractors, market rivalry and entry barriers. Originality/value: Despite the sheer size of China's construction industry and the urgent need to improve risk management, the insurance industry that serves construction firms engineering insurance is underdeveloped. Engineering insurance is yet to be understood from a macro perspective, which may reveal the underlying reasons for engineering insurance's underdevelopment. The industrial organization theories provided a theoretical framework to test the functioning of this specific industry. Purpose: The transformation of political, social, business and many other organizations into learning organizations is very needed. Such a process should be supported by the theory of learning organizations. This theory, if it is to play more effectively its role, should continue to develop. According to opinion of the author of the present text, improving the conceptual basis of this theory and of its logical structure is one of the desired directions of this development. The purpose of the paper is to contribute to such a development. Design/methodology/approach: This text has character of logical analysis of theoretical concepts and theorems. Findings: The theory of learning organizations is an interdisciplinary theory including elements of such disciplines as epistemology, system theory, cognitive sciences, psychology (of learning), sociology (of organizations), theory of social communication and management sciences. One, common consistent theoretical language is a necessary (though: not sufficient) condition for transforming theory of learning organizations into a more coherent theoretical system. Research limitations/implications: The analyses presented in this text are rather of preliminary character. They should be continued; especially, some formal (mathematical) methods should be applied. Practical implications: Precising, clarifying and systematizing theorems – are important conditions for any social theory to influence effectively politics, governance and management. Social implications: The better function various organizations, the better (sustainable, ecologically safe, socially just, etc.) – all other factors equal – society. Before the 1990s, the phenomenon of organizational improvisation (OI) as a distinct process was poorly understood and undertheorized in the organization theory, management, and strategy literatures, in spite of its pervasive occurrence in practice and its impressionistic mentions in interesting work. As editors of the recent Routledge Companion to Organizational Improvisation, we believe that ongoing phenomenon-focused work that builds on granular data and unexpected discoveries represents a crucial ongoing frontier for OI research. In this Guidepost, we illustrate the crucial role of phenomenon-focused research activities in the early exploration and ongoing work to understand OI, and flag four especially promising areas for ongoing discoveries: premises, practical skills, outcomes, and micro-processes. For each, we highlight specific issues where new exploratory work – drawing on quantitative and qualitative data—can offer a springboard to new, impactful understanding and action. This essay is a companion to Karl Weick's recent Guidepost where he reflects on the 30th anniversary of his 1993 ASQ Mann Gulch Disaster paper, which played a key role in legitimizing deeper scholarly attention to OI. The article Employment stability and decent work published in the Journal of Industrial Relations by Murphy and Turner presents evidence forming the basis of a claim that job instability has not increased in Ireland between 1998 and 2021. This contrasts with a rich literature in industrial relations and the sociology of work and organizations, which documents the fundamental transformation of employment relationships since the 1990s toward greater insecurity. In this response paper, I question the empirical foundations of Murphy and Turner's claims. Analyzing the same data set used in their study, I provide clear evidence that an increase in job instability consistent with the precarious work literature has been hiding in plain sight. I also engage with their efforts at theorizing the nature of the recent transformation of employment relationships in Ireland specifically, and in Liberal Market Economies more broadly. In doing so, I suggest research avenues that go beyond a polarized debate in whether or not job instability has increased in order to contribute to a more complex understanding of contemporary changes in career trajectories. This paper discusses the connection between natural and social sciences through how the modern evolutionary synthesis approach, which emerged in biology, influenced social organizations. First, the paper examines the relationship of neo-evolutionism with organizational theories. Then the interaction between natural and social sciences is explained in the study. Afterwards, the relationship between neo-evolutionism and organization theory is handled around the discussions in this field. It has been emphasized that the flow of knowledge between sociology and biology is much more organic and mutual than expected. In other words, this study aims to draw attention to the methodological continuity of the interaction between evolution and organization theory from the very beginning to the present. In line with this purpose, the relationship between the transformation of the theory of evolution and the transformation of classical organizational theories is examined. In this study, it is claimed that the source of the paradigmatic interaction of neo-evolutionism and organization theories is the analogical relationship that began to be established between biology and sociology in the nineteenth century and that this relationship has turned into a much more organic structure than a mechanical and technical analogy in the historical process. Organizational scholars have called upon higher-power individuals to serve as moral objectors to combat unethical behavior at work because it is assumed they will face less retaliation. However, research has painted an unclear picture of whether power protects women in the same way as it does men. In this paper, we draw on two distinct role theories (i.e., power role theories and gender role theories) as well as expectancy violation theory, theorizing and finding that female moral objectors benefit less from power than male moral objectors because they are viewed as lower in self-control. We further investigate an alternative remedy, or organizational frame, that may mitigate retaliation against higher-powered female moral objectors, finding that using this frame increases perceptions of self-control and reduces retaliation. We test and find support for our theory across four studies, including an archival study (n = 33,715), a critical incident technique experiment, and two preregistered experiments testing our intervention. Modularizing a system, a product, or a process can have positive effects on performance in many instances. That it may have adverse consequences has also been discussed, although on balance the literature seems inclined to consider that modularity is desirable in most cases. In this paper, we put forward a feature of modular systems that extant research has not considered in spite of its strong performance-hindering potential. Starting from the premise that organizations are essentially patterns of formal and informal interactions, and modules within organizations are places where these interactions accumulate and reinforce, we argue that modularity can exacerbate issues related to (low-)performance spillovers from one organizational actor to another. With psychosocial affect as the channel connecting the formal and the informal spheres, we develop a simple model that combines elements of psychology research, network science, and organization theory to study how formal and informal elements jointly determine organizational performance under different modularity configurations. We find that organizational performance is lower when the alignment of formal and informal is stronger: informal interaction augments local accumulation of stress caused by formal aspects of firm organization. However, this result depends heavily on the modularity of formal organization: feedbacks between formal and informal elements cause much harsher performance degradation in modular systems. In 2000, Carliss Baldwin and Kim Clark published "Design Rules: The Power of Modularity," a book that introduced new ways of understanding and explaining the architecture of complex systems This Special Issue of Industrial and Corporate Change celebrates this seminal work, the research it has inspired, and the insights that these collective efforts have generated. In this introductory essay, we review the impact of "Design Rules" across numerous fields, including organization theory, competitive strategy, industry structure, and innovation management. We offer perspectives on key themes that emerge from contributions in this issue, including the alignment between organizational and technical designs ("mirroring"), the dynamics of industry evolution, and the role that individuals play in shaping and responding to system designs. Measuring the dynamics of microbial communities results in high-dimensional measurements of taxa abundances over time and space, which is difficult to analyze due to complex changes in taxonomic compositions. This paper presents a new method to investigate and visualize the intrinsic hierarchical community structure implied by the measurements. The basic idea is to identify significant intersection sets, which can be seen as sub-communities making up the measured communities. Using the subset relationship, the intersection sets together with the measurements form a hierarchical structure visualized as a Hasse diagram. Chemical organization theory (COT) is used to relate the hierarchy of the sets of taxa to potential taxa interactions and to their potential dynamical persistence. The approach is demonstrated on a data set of community data obtained from bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing for samples collected monthly from four groundwater wells over a nearly 3-year period (n = 114) along a hillslope area. The significance of the hierarchies derived from the data is evaluated by showing that they significantly deviate from a random model. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how the hierarchy is related to temporal and spatial factors; and how the idea of a core microbiome can be extended to a set of interrelated core microbiomes. This paper summarizes and reviews Chemical Organization Theory (COT), a formalism for the analysis of complex, self-organizing systems across multiple disciplines. Its elements are resources and reactions. A reaction maps a set of resources onto another set, thus representing an elementary process that transforms resources into new resources. Reaction networks self-organize into invariant subnetworks, called 'organizations', which are attractors of their dynamics. These are characterized by closure (no new resources are added) and self-maintenance (no existing resources are lost). Thus, they provide a simple model of autopoiesis: the organization persistently recreates its own components. The resilience of organizations in the face of perturbations depends on properties such as the size of their basin of attraction and the redundancy of their reaction pathways. According to information theories of legislative organizations, legislators depend on policy expertise from committees to make decisions. Expertise may also be derived from knowledge held by individual legislators, typically knowledge from their professional backgrounds. Research has shown that legislators sponsor (or patron) bills related to their professional backgrounds and other legislators defer to their expertise. Moreover, bills sponsored by legislators with professional expertise are more likely to advance through the legislative process. This paper considers the role of information derived from professional background on the patronage and passage of healthrelated legislation in the Virginia General Assembly. In so doing, the paper takes a unique approach. Whereas most studies classify legislators in terms of their professional field, this analysis probes more deeply by assessing the effects of a legislators' current or former occupations within their professional field. This paper finds that occupational background is even more influential than the professional field of a legislator on bill patronage and bill passage. The effects of occupational background hold up against alternative explanations such as committee membership, majority party status, or gender in determining bill patronage and passage rates. Purpose: Although current strategic communication research is particularly interested in deviations from normative ideals, there is a surprising lack of interest in the structures that lead to such deviations from formal specifications. To this end, this paper explores the classic, but of late largely forgotten concept of informality. The aim is to develop a theoretical framework and a systematization that can be used to answer central questions in strategic communication research. The focus is on three research questions: How can formal and informal structures of strategic organizational communication be systematized? How are formal and informal organizational structures thematized in strategic organizational communication? What is the relationship between (in)formal structures of strategic organizational communication and the thematization of (in)formal organizational structures? Design/methodology/approach: The conceptual contribution is based on systems theoretical organization theory, which understands formal structures as decided decision premises and informal structures as undecided decision premises. Findings: The understanding of informal expectation structures presented here has enormous potential for describing and researching central issues in strategic communication research in a far more significant way, both theoretically and empirically. For example, decoupling can be described in a much more differentiated way than is possible using the neo-institutionalist perspective. Practical implications: The systematizing framework for researching informal structures enables a deeper understanding of informal structures and thus a better handling of them in practice. In addition, the framework provides a basis for future empirical studies. Originality/value: Informal phenomena and structures seem to be the elephant in the room in many discourses in strategic communication research. Establishing appropriate inter-organizational partnership in disaster response is of great help to the improvement of disaster relief performance. However, the selection of proper disaster response organizations for government agencies to build partnerships among the numerous relief organizations remains to be addressed. To fill the gap, this paper adopted a complex network modeling method to explain the formation mechanism of inter-organizational partnership in disaster response. Then, based on a numerical simulation method, the paper compared different inter-organizational partnering strategies, and explored the optimal inter-organizational partnering strategy in the disaster response process. Results demonstrate that the optimal partnering strategy is contingent on disaster response conditions, with accurate disaster information and abundant relief materials to choose the material difference principle, and vague disaster information to choose the organizational influence principle. At the same time, frequent information communication and material cooperation allocation can be transformed into low-frequency information communication and government-led material allocation. This study provides practical guidance for disaster relief organizations to choose inter-organizational partnering strategies, and enriches the disaster organization management theory. Building on the work of Rancière, this paper theorizes otherness in organization. Extant research primarily understands the Other as a subject silenced by the voices of the One. The underlying assumption is that albeit silent, the Other is still perceived as a subject able to articulate him-/herself in intelligible ways to the One. But what happens when the Other is not even perceived as a subject part of the community of human speech? We introduce the concept of noise to understand such otherness that has remained theoretically neglected and empirically understudied so far. We develop how affect plays a significant role for how the position of Other as noise is produced and overcome - something that we term miscounting and recounting. The paper extends the theoretical repertoire of organizational scholarship by developing the notion of the Other as noise, the role of affect in struggles over otherness and the significance of in/equality enacted in practice. This paper reviews the growing body of work on network dynamics in organizational research, focusing on a corpus of 187 articles—both "micro" (i.e., interpersonal) and "macro" (i.e., interorganizational)—published between 2007 and 2020. We do not see "network dynamics" as a single construct; rather, it is an umbrella term covering a wide territory. In the first phase of our two-phase review, we present a taxonomy that organizes this territory into three categories: (1) network change (i.e., the emergence, evolution, and transformation of network ties and structures), (2) the occurrence of relational events (i.e., modeling the sequence of discrete actions generated by one actor and directed towards one or more other actors), and (3) coevolution (i.e., the process whereby network and actor attributes influence each other over time). Our review highlights differences between network dynamics based on relational states (e.g., a friendship) and relational events (e.g., an email message), examines the drivers and effects of network dynamics, and in a methodological appendix, clarifies the assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses of different analytical approaches for studying network dynamics. In the second phase of our review, we critically reflect on the findings from the first phase and sketch out a rough agenda for future research, organized in terms of four overarching themes: the interplay between the dynamics of social networks conceived as relational states and relational events, mechanisms underlying network dynamics, outcomes of network dynamics, and the role of cognition. This paper focuses on three variables: job satisfaction (JS), organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and participative leadership (PL). The main purpose is to examine the relationship between JS and OCB among employees, mediated by PL. The data were collected from 287 employees in Croatian companies. Using hierarchical regression to test the hypothesis, the study revealed a positive relationship between JS and OCB. The results also highlight the role PL has as a mediator for the JS and OCB relationship. The paper suggests that PL triggers JS and OCB by enhancing and reinforcing the relationship between them. The implication of the results is discussed emphasizing the benefits of the participative management style and democratic structures in the organizations for theory, research, and practice. Academic and industry experts build their careers on accurate and precise definitions and meanings of domain-specific terminology, whereas novice practitioners and lay-persons often conflate similar or similar-sounding terms to describe concepts in the same domain of interest. This is common in the space sector when individuals of different academic or practitioner backgrounds discuss "commercial" topics. In English, as in other languages, the word "space" is often followed by words such as "industry," "industry segment," "industrial base," "market," "ecosystem" and others. The practice of casually using words with ambiguous meanings may often be appropriate for informal discussion if it facilitates the communication and exchange of ideas and all parties generally understand the implications of the casual usage. This practice, however, is problematic for detailed and analytical applications requiring precision and order of thought. Grounded in contemporary organization theory and economic practice, this paper provides background discussions of different levels of analysis that characterize embedded hierarchical social systems of organizations as they pertain to space. This paper then recommends a hierarchical taxonomy for defining specific terms that describe organizations and activities within the space domain for use by practitioners, analysts and academics requiring more precise language to communicate their market analysis ideas. This taxonomy places specific terms within each level of analysis discussed and provides definitions of each, with the intention of stimulating critical discussion and potential modifications or improvements. • Using phrases like "space industry" can be vague and problematic for precise analytical tasks. • For accurate space terminology, understanding analysis levels in organizational systems is key. • This paper offers a taxonomy for clearer language in space market analysis communication. • Proper terminology aids in strategic decisions for everyone in the space sector. • Feedback on this proposed taxonomy is encouraged for potential enhancements. Based on equilibrium assumptions, traditional ecological models have been widely applied in the fields of management and organization studies. While research using these models is still ongoing, studies have nonetheless struggled with ways to address multiple levels of analysis, uncertainty, and complexity in their analyses. This paper conceptualizes the dynamic co-evolution mechanisms that operate in an ecosystem across multiple organizational scales. Specifically, informed by recent advances in modelling in biology, a general 'patch-dynamics' framework that is theoretically and methodologically able to capture disequilibrium, uncertainty, disturbances, and changes in organizational populations or ecosystems, as complex and dynamically evolving resource environments are introduced. Simulation models are built to show the patch-dynamics framework's functioning and test its robustness. The patch-dynamics framework and modelling methodology integrates equilibrium and disequilibrium perspectives, co-evolutions across multiple organization levels, uncertainties, and random disturbances into a single framework, opening new avenues for future research on topics in the field of management and organization studies, as well as on the mechanisms that shape ecosystems. Such a framework has the potential to help analyse the sustainability and healthiness of the business environment, and deserves more attention in future research on management and organization theory, particularly in the context of significant uncertainty and disturbances in business and management practice. This paper examined the impact of organizational social climate on employees' sense of belonging, its impact on employees' intention to leave as well as the moderating effect of workplace friendships on this relationship. Using a convenient sampling method on financial sector employees working in Istanbul, Turkey, a survey was conducted. A total of 403 employees were surveyed. The findings of this study revealed that organizational social climate is positively associated with sense of belonging, while organizational social climate, sense of belonging and workplace friendship are negatively associated with intention to leave the organization. According to the findings, the workplace friendship moderates the relationship between sense of belonging and intention to leave. This paper demonstrated that social interactions in the workplace play a vitally important role in employees' intentions to leave the organization. This contributes to conceptual understanding of the job embeddedness theory, which suggests that the relationships are one of the key factors that keep individuals in organizations. This paper highlighted the potential for employee turnover to directly / indirectly arise from the employees' sense of belonging, social climate and workplace friendships acquired in the organization. Risk management in project contexts is increasingly more in focus amongst researchers and practitioners, including the debate on if and how opportunities can be integrated into the work with threats, or if separation is better. In this conceptual paper, integrating several strands of literature including risk management, project management, and organization theory in terms of sensemaking and paradox perspectives on decision making, it is argued that a sequential approach is a better option: An initial deliberate focus on threats to make sense of the existing project plan, then on innovative responses often entailing new opportunities. Five propositions on how this can be conducted in practice by project organizations are discussed as well as an overarching flow-chart linking the five propositions together, while recognizing that projects are temporary organizations in which a mix of people with a different frame of references are expected to deliver results after short initiation. Therefore, it is important to be realistic and implement a clear and practical process for project risk management, which distinctly links to existing forums and processes for decision making rather than creating new ones. We explore the organizational consequences that different authenticity claims carry for products and the firms that produce them. To do so, we build on the notion of an authenticity paradox—the idea that seeking to capture demand that is created by perceived authenticity can undermine the very authenticity that generated the demand in the first place. Using an experimental approach, we argue and show that provenance-based claims of authenticity (e.g., location of origin) constrain a firm spaciotemporally, limiting their ability to expand production in ways that might be economically rational but would undermine this authenticity claim. We further show there is no penalty (or there is a reduced penalty) when the claim is not explicitly spaciotemporal, and is instead based on an association to an iconic individual broadly connected to that place. We show how these types of connections help firms respond to the authenticity paradox by allowing them more freedom to expand production to meet the increased demand without undermining the original claims to authenticity. As a result, this paper's key contribution is in moving beyond explaining how perceived authenticity benefits organizations and instead, explores how different claims to authenticity can constrain a firm's ability to capture the value that it has created from authenticity. Background: The introduction and wide application of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has triggered further evolution of routines in the practice of prenatal diagnosis. 'Routinization' of prenatal diagnosis however has been associated with hampered informed choice and eugenic attitudes or outcomes. It is viewed, at least in some countries, with great suspicion in both bioethics and public discourse. However, it is a heterogeneous phenomenon that needs to be scrutinized in the wider context of social practices of reproductive genetics. In different countries with their different regulatory frameworks, different patterns of routines emerge that have different ethical implications. This paper discusses an ethics of routines informed by the perspectives of organizational sociology and psychology, where a routine is defined as a repetitive, recognizable pattern of interdependent organizational actions that is carried out by multiple performers. We favour a process approach that debunks the view – which gives way to most of the concerns – that routines are always blindly performed. If this is so, routines are therefore not necessarily incompatible with responsible decision-making. Free and informed decision-making can, as we argue, be a key criterion for the ethical evaluation of testing routines. If free and informed decision-making by each pregnant woman is the objective, routines in prenatal testing may not be ethically problematic, but rather are defensible and helpful. We compare recent experiences of NIPT routines in the context of prenatal screening programmes in Germany, Israel and the Netherlands. Notable variation can be observed between these three countries (i) in the levels of routinization around NIPT, (ii) in the scope of routinization, and (iii) in public attitudes toward routinized prenatal testing. Conclusion: An ethics of routines in the field of prenatal diagnostics should incorporate and work with the necessary distinctions between levels and forms of routines, in order to develop sound criteria for their evaluation. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to use Victor Ray's theory of racialized organizations (TRO), and multiple applied exemplars, as a framework and call to action for community college researchers and policymakers. In doing so, we provide a meso-level analytic view on how and why the most accessible postsecondary pathway for minoritized students is also the most chronically under-resourced sector of higher education in the United States. Argument: Understanding community colleges as a type of racialized organization opposes traditional meritocratic perspectives that view these institutions as culturally neutral spaces, guided by open access and unrestricted credential choice. Decades of research suggest that egalitarian principles attached to community colleges do not necessarily translate into equitable student experiences and outcomes. Responses to these inequitable outcomes, however, primarily assign blame to individual dispositions. Without deep consideration of contextual conditions that shape organizational policies and practices, outcome disparities are viewed as a condition of cultural deficits rather than structured impotence. Conclusions: This paper advances our collective attunement, as community college scholars, to organizational arrangements that perpetuate and weaken white supremacy. In short, we use a racialized organizational lens to think in new ways about how community colleges, as an institutional type, are often as marginalized as the students they serve. While facing cuts, downsizing and revenue losses, media organizations experience paradoxical demands in being organized for print or linear production with daily deadlines and simultaneously striving to be 'digital first' and produce and publish stories online on a continuous basis throughout the day. In this paper, we describe efforts applied when introducing the metaphor flowline in a medium-sized newspaper organization in Norway with the aim of aligning their production and publishing processes to readers' consumption of online news. Both the production volume of journalistic content, reader consumption and the newsroom workers' experience of mastering their everyday work life increased dramatically in a very short time. The involvement of a temporary autonomous team in the planning and designing of a test pilot aiming to make flowline "as practice", was integral to the digital transformation success, allowing for participative action across newsroom boundaries. Based on the empirical findings from the local newspaper organization and drawing on theories on liminality (Turner 1982, 1986) and metaphorical work (Schön 1993), this article presents a set of six interrelated steps incorporating a structure for autonomous teams and their role in enabling lasting change in organizations facing digital transformation. Carl Menger's objective in his seminal book, Principles of Economics, was to elucidate a unified account of price formation. This raises a question, which motivates our paper: to what extent, if any, can Menger account for production not directly organized by the price mechanism, and therefore a theory of economic organization and its formation through time? We argue that implicit to Menger's account of price formation is an account not only of institutional formation, but particularly economic organization. Thus, there exists a symbiotic relationship that can be found in Menger between a theory of price formation and a theory of organizational formation, both of which are by-products of an increasing division of knowledge brought about by an increasing scope of market exchange. Moreover, our point illustrates that Menger's work is an analytical point of departure for a shared understanding of parallel developments in Austrian economics and organizational economics that have followed. Authoritative appraisals have qualified this book as an "axiomatic" theory. However, given that its essential content is no more than an analogy, its theoretical organization cannot be axiomatic. Indeed, in the first edition Dirac declares that he had avoided an axiomatic presentation. Moreover, I show that the text aims to solve a basic problem (How quantum mechanics is similar to classical mechanics?). A previous paper analyzed all past theories of physics, chemistry and mathematics, presented by the respective authors non-axiomatically. Four characteristic features of a new model of organizing a theory were recognized. A careful examination of Dirac's text shows that it actually applied this kind of organization of a theory, confirming formally what Kronz and Lupher suggested through intuitive categories (pragmatism and rigour), i.e. Dirac's formulation of Quantum mechanics represents a distinct theoretical approach from von Neumann's axiomatic approach. However, since the second edition Dirac has changed his approach: although relying again on analogy, his theory refers to the axiomatic method. Some considerations on the odd paths which led to the present formulation of QM are added. They suggest that a new foundation of this theory needs to be found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this introduction, we reemphasize some key parts of meta-organization theory and their implications for understanding meta-organizations and meta-organizing processes. We clarify what meta-organizations are and what they are not and then analyze their key purposes and activities. We then present the papers of the special issue and discuss venues for future research. Although many key contributions have been made to meta-organization theory and research, there are many more things to investigate before we know as much about meta-organizations as we know about individual-based organizations.
