The development of the automatic fare collection (AFC) systems provides significant support for predicting passenger flow on urban rail transit. This paper extracts passenger travel patterns using AFC data on urban rail transit in Chengdu, China, over a one-month period. Passengers are divided into two categories based on their travel habits and data mining models, and multinomial logit (MNL) models are separately used to predict their destinations. Furthermore, a two-way search algorithm is developed to search the optimal paths between origin-destination (OD) pairs by considering interchange constraints. Start a path search through the origin point and destination point, respectively, until the shortest path is found. The maximum effectiveness of a path is measured by travel time, interchange time, and the number of interchanges between the OD pairs. Finally, the validity of the proposed passenger flow path prediction method is verified by using the AFC data of Chengdu metropolitan rail transit from April 2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to evaluate the URTPSQ (Urban Rail Transit Passenger Service Quality) comprehensively, find the shortage of URTPSQ, find out the difference between the actual service situation and the passenger's expectation and demand, and provide passengers with better travel services, a passenger-oriented KANO-Entropy-TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method is proposed and applied in this paper. Firstly, a KANO model is applied to select the service quality indicators from the 24 URTPSQ evaluation sub-indicators, according to the selection results, the KANO service quality indicators of URTPSQ are constructed. Then the sensitivity of the KANO service quality indicators based on the KANO model are calculated and ranked, the PS (Passenger Satisfaction) of each KANO service quality indicator by using the Entropy-TOPSIS method is calculated and ranked. Based on the difference between the sensitivity degree rank and the satisfaction degree rank of each KANO service quality indicator, determine the service quality KANO indicators of the URTPSQ that need to be improved significantly. A case study is conducted by taking the Chengdu subway system in China as a background. The results show that the Chengdu subway operation enterprises should pay attention to the must-be demand first, then the one-dimensional demand, finally the attractive demand. The three indicators, including transfer on the same floor in the station, service quality of staffs of urban rail transit enterprises, and cleanness in the station and passenger coach, need to be improved urgently. For the managers and operators of urban rail transit system, the passengers' must-be demand should be satisfied first if the KANO model is applied to evaluate the service. The indicators with highest sensitivity degree and lowest TOPSIS value should be improved based on the KANO-Entropy-TOPSIS model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the problem of designing the schedule of urban rail transit systems under dynamic passenger demand considering limited train capacity and congestion. From the point of view of operators, the goal of timetable optimization consists of using as few as possible service trains to transport the arriving passengers to their destinations securely and quickly. On the other hand, passengers want to spend the minimum time travelling to their destinations, including the time they wait on platforms until they board the first and successive trains in case of transferring between lines. Due to the variability of passenger flows and the difficulty in exactly solving full-day timetabling problems in short computation times, it is difficult in practice to use the approaches proposed in the literature. Moreover, when the capacity of trains is considered and oversaturation conditions emerge, the problem becomes even more complex, converting into a challenge the design of schedules from an operational point of view. By considering fixed train dwell times at stations and train running times between stations, we first propose a non-linear programming formulation to model the problem of determining the most convenient interdeparture times of services at the first station of a line, aiming at minimizing the waiting time of passengers. Since the dynamic behaviour of passenger demand and the maximum sectional passenger flow are approximately synchronous, an innovative method, the spatiotemporal synchronization coupling algorithm, based on working with the time-varying maximum sectional passenger flow instead of the demand patterns is proposed to quickly solve in an approximate way the demand-driven timetabling problem. The proposed approach is applied to a real case of Chengdu Metro Line 1 in China. • A hybrid deep learning model within decomposition-ensemble strategy named DEASeq2Seq is proposed for multistep metro passenger flow prediction. • DEASeq2Seq employs CEEMDAN and RQA to capture intrinsic dynamics. • An attention-based Seq2Seq model is developed to characterize temporal dependencies. • Real-world datasets to verify the proposed model and further model interpretation. Short-term passenger flow prediction has practical significance for metro management and operation. However, the complex nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics make it challenging to detect evolution characteristics of passenger flow. To address this problem, a hybrid short-term metro passenger flow prediction model named decomposition ensemble attention sequence to sequence (DEASeq2Seq) is proposed in this paper. The proposed DEASeq2Seq includes three phases: decomposition, ensemble, and prediction. First, complete empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) is utilized to decompose the original passenger flow data into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residue. Second, recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) is performed to reconstruct the decomposed modes into a stochastic part, a deterministic part, and a trend part via determinism evaluation. Third, a Seq2Seq model with the attention mechanism is proposed to execute multistep prediction for short-term passenger flow and explore the influence mechanism of the reconstructed components on the prediction targets. The real dataset from Chengdu metro, China, is used to verify the proposed model. The experiment results show that the proposed DEASeq2Seq model outperforms the benchmark models. This study focuses on the large passenger flow control problem, after an operation interruption occurs, to develop a methodology that can efficiently control the passenger inflows of multiple stations and avoid overcrowding inside stations. An early-warning model for irregular large-scale passenger flows (ILSPF) and a dynamic ILSPF control model are proposed. The early-warning model is developed to predict passenger flows in the future with historical data and detect when to start control measures in actual time. The ILSPF cooperative control model focuses on cooperatively controlling the passenger inflows of multiple stations to ensure passenger safety in vehicles and stations, as well as maximize the number of passengers transported and minimize the passengers' total waiting times. An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm was designed to determine an optimal solution, and a case study on the Chengdu metro in China was carried out to examine the performance of the model. The obtained results verify the effectiveness of the model and algorithm and prove that ILSPF control can regulate the passenger inflow demand, better match the passenger demand and capability on the line, increase the total number of passengers transported, and balance the proportion of passenger boarding at each station. Insufficient attention has been paid to how subway cabins are used by passengers and especially the distribution of passengers and occupancy of facilities. In this study, passengers were observed in 133 sections from the beginning to the end of the early peak of Chengdu Metro in the working days. The differences in occupancy behaviors of passengers to different areas, seats, and standing auxiliary facilities in the cabin were analyzed by the nonparametric test. The occupancy curve was fitted by the least square method from the minimum to the maximum load factor, and the prediction and explanatory model for the use of cabin was established. As expected, the distribution of passengers in the cabin is uneven. The highest occupancy rate has been maintained at the cabin end. Female passengers accounted for the largest proportion in the door area, while male passengers accounted for a larger proportion at the end of the cabin. There is no difference in the use of different seat types by passengers. There are more seats in female passengers, and females are more likely to get the remaining seats when the seat load is nearly saturated. For the auxiliary standing facilities, there are always passengers who do not use the facilities and the proportion is increasing. The facilities that can be relied on account for a greater median proportion of the passengers with facilities, but service capacity is limited.
