School policies are largely driven by perceptions and expectations for how students should behave academically and socially, yet these practices often lack the cultural relevance and sustainability required to support racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse (RELD) students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral dis/orders (EBD). Similarly, many evidence-based practices for behavior do not consider internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, toxic stress), exemplifying a critical need for equitable practices aimed at supporting the prosocial and emotional needs of RELD students with or at risk for EBD. Given the multifaceted social, emotional, and behavioral needs of RELD students with or at risk for EBD, social and emotional learning (SEL) practices are most effective when implemented through a culturally responsive-sustaining lens. Thus, this paper examines how the pervasive inequities within special education praxis can be mediated through culturally responsive-sustaining SEL practices. Using the tenets of dis/ability critical race theory (DisCrit), we first problematize the current approaches to SEL curricula and address how they contribute to the pathologization of RELD students with or at risk for EBD. We then provide evidence-based recommendations for school leaders and practitioners to embed culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogy within SEL instruction.

We developed and validated a self-report scale for screening pathological traits of dependent personality disorder (DPD) from the Hierarchical Taxonomy of psychopathology (HiTOP) perspective. The sample was 693 adults who answered the new scale, the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory DPD (IDCP-DPD), the PID-5, the FFDI, and the FFBI. The IDCP-DPD was composed of six factors grouped in one general score. The scores showed associations with external measures in the expected direction, and the means comparisons showed large differences. Our findings indicated the IDCP-DPD as a useful clinical measure, and the structure observed confirms the spectrum level of the HiTOP.

Dall’inizio del periodo pandemico, il personale sanitario è stato sottoposto a gravi difficoltà ed a continue emergenze, ed è sempre più esplicito il bisogno di avere un sostegno psicologico per gli operatori che affrontano tali disagi. In un'ottica di prevenzione nel campo della salute mentale per coloro che dovrebbero erogare ‘salute’, sarebbe auspicabile sviluppare una politica sanitaria che preveda l'inserimento strutturato della psicologia del lavoro e delle organizzazioni in contesti sanitari. In linea con gli obiettivi del "Nuovo sistema di garanzia per il monitoraggio dell'assistenza sanitaria" (del DM 12 marzo 2019 pubblicato in G.U. il 14 giugno 2019, operativo dal 1° gennaio 2020) che, nella prevenzione collettiva, descrive come indicatore di efficacia dei sistemi sanitari, il benessere organizzativo e luoghi di lavoro che erogano salute, si vuole avviare un’analisi del bisogno e delle criticità in merito. In questo studio ci si propone una prima review della letteratura sull’attuale presenza o assenza di interventi strutturati di psicologia del lavoro e delle organizzazioni nei sistemi sanitari, per analizzare le effettive politiche delle strutture sanitarie in merito, partendo dalla considerazione che non è semplice concretizzare tale presenza poiché aprirebbe le porte a quesiti su una verifica della reale efficacia della programmazione sanitaria, della modalità di reclutamento e di allocazione delle risorse umane e della leadership del management. Le suddette verifiche si rendono estremamente necessarie in quanto è dimostrato che l’inefficacia delle politiche sanitarie è una delle concause di malessere organizzativo, del burnout degli operatori ed una delle conseguenze della cosiddetta malasanità. Con l'obiettivo a lungo termine di uno sviluppo proattivo di una linea di attività specifica, distinta dalla psicologia clinica, nei contesti sanitari, qui si vuole esprimere una posizione innovativa utile agli operatori ed alle stesse aziende sanitarie che potrebbero beneficiare di un ruolo ed una funzione specifica che orienti, con la sua presenza e funzione, la cultura e la coscienza dell’organizzazione alla corretta gestione delle risorse umane e fornisca in modo sistematico quel necessario supporto psicologico agli operatori al fine di erogare benessere e non malessere agli utenti

Treatment of malignant pancreatic and/or biliary strictures requires tissue diagnosis. Since cytologic brushings at endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) of these strictures has a poor sensitivity for malignancy (30-83%) (see ME Ryan. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 1991;37(2):139-143; and MB Cohen, Wittchow RJ, Johlin FC, et al. Mod Pathol 1995;8:498-502), tissue diagnosis must be obtained by another route. We report our experience of percutaneous biopsy of malignant pancreatic and/or biliary strictures even when no radiographic mass is present.At ERCP, five patients demonstrated pancreatic and/or biliary duct strictures, had atypical cytological brushings, and had their strictures stented. No mass to account for the strictures could be identified on CT. These five patients underwent percutaneous biopsy of the persistent material by CT within 10 days of the ERCP.Two patients had adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. One patient had malignant lymphoma and another had cholangiocarcinoma. One patient had inflammatory cells and was followed.If the diagnosis of malignancy cannot be made at the time of the ERCP sampling, then our experience suggests that a percutaneous biopsy should be performed even if a mass is not present using the stent as a target.

Introduction: Irisin plays an important role in regulating tissue stress, cardiac function, and inflammation. Integrin αvβ5 was recently identified as a receptor for irisin to elicit its physiologic function. It remains unknown whether integrin αvβ5 is required for irisin's function in modulating the physiologic response to hemorrhage. The objective of this study is to examine if integrin αvβ5 contributes to the effects of irisin during the hemorrhagic response. Methods: Hemorrhage was induced in mice by achieving a mean arterial blood pressure of 35–45 mmHg for one hour, followed by two hours of resuscitation. Irisin (0.5 μg/kg) was administrated to assess its pharmacologic effects in hemorrhage. Cilengitide, a cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp peptide (cRGDyK) which is an inhibitor of integrin αvβ5, or control RGDS (1 mg/kg) was administered with irisin. In another cohort of mice, the irisin-induced protective effect was examined after knocking down integrin β5 with nanoparticle delivery of integrin β5 sgRNA using CRSIPR/Cas-9 gene editing. Cardiac function and hemodynamics were measured using echocardiography and femoral artery catheterization, respectively. Systemic cytokine releases were measured using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Histological analyses were used to determine tissue damage in myocardium, skeletal muscles, and lung tissues. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) was carried out to assess apoptosis in tissues. Results: Hemorrhage induced reduction of integrin αvβ5 in skeletal muscles and repressed recovery of cardiac performance and hemodynamics. Irisin treatment led to significantly improved cardiac function, which was abrogated by treatment with Cilengitide or knockdown of integrin β5. Furthermore, irisin resulted in a marked suppression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 (IL-1), muscle edema, and inflammatory cells infiltration in myocardium and skeletal muscles, which was attenuated by Cilengitide or knockdown of integrin β5. Irisin-induced reduction of apoptosis in the myocardium, skeletal muscles, and lung, which were attenuated by either the inhibition of integrin αvβ5, or knockdown of integrin β5. Conclusion: Integrin αvβ5 plays an important role for irisin in modulating the protective effect during hemorrhage.

Abstract Background Equine influenza virus is a common cause of respiratory disease in equids. Few reports describe clinical presentation and disease progression in donkeys. Hypothesis/Objectives Describe the clinical and diagnostic findings, outcome, and pathologic lesions associated with influenza pneumonia in donkeys. Animals Thirteen unvaccinated donkeys ranging from 1 week to 12 years of age and sharing clinical signs and exposure history. Methods Retrospective case series. Medical records from June to July 2020 at the Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and collaborating referring veterinary practices were reviewed. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular testing, virus isolation, and partial genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the virus. Results Survival in donkeys 1 year of age was 85.7% (6/7). Hemagglutinin gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis confirmed a contemporary clade 1 Florida sublineage H3 virus as the causative agent. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Clinical signs of equine influenza virus infection in donkeys are similar to those observed in horses. Prognosis for survival generally is good, but deaths have been observed especially in foals born to seronegative dams. This finding emphasizes the importance of prenatal vaccination protocols in all equids, including donkeys.

Rhabdomyolysis (RBD) occurs secondary to tissue injury, resulting in (muscle) cell lysis and release of intracellular electrolytes and proteins into circulation. An elevation in the muscle enzyme, creatine kinase (CK), is a diagnostic marker and indicates muscle breakdown. Symptoms include dark urine caused by release of myoglobin, myalgias, and acute kidney injury (AKI). RBD is categorized as (1) traumatic, (2) nontraumatic exertional (ie, metabolic myopathies), or (3) non-exertional and non-traumatic. Clostridioides difficile (CD) has been previously reported to cause RBD, but the risk factors, pathogenesis, and recommended treatment regimen remain unclear.

Doxycycline (DOX) is a tetracycline antibiotic that is prescribed for treating a variety of infections involving the skin, respiratory tract, and urogenital system. Adversely, esophageal mucosal injury due to DOX is well described; however, gastric mucosal injury is less commonly reported and may result in severe gastrointestinal hemorrhage and occasionally, perforation. In most reported cases of DOX-induced gastric lesions, patients are symptomatic upon presentation leading to endoscopic evaluation and diagnosis with biopsy. However, severe gastric insults may go unrecognized in rare cases of asymptomatic patients, increasing the risk of mortality.

Immuno-neurology is an emerging therapeutic strategy for dementia and neurodegeneration designed to address immune surveillance failure in the brain. Microglia, as central nervous system (CNS)-resident myeloid cells, routinely perform surveillance of the brain and support neuronal function. Loss-of-function (LOF) mutations causing decreased levels of progranulin (PGRN), an immune regulatory protein, lead to dysfunctional microglia and are associated with multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal dementia caused by the progranulin gene (GRN) mutation (FTD-GRN), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), limbic-predominant age-related transactivation response deoxyribonucleic acid binding protein 43 (TDP-43) encephalopathy (LATE), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Immuno-neurology targets immune checkpoint-like proteins, offering the potential to convert aging and dysfunctional microglia into disease-fighting cells that counteract multiple disease pathologies, clear misfolded proteins and debris, promote myelin and synapse repair, optimize neuronal function, support astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, and maintain brain vasculature. Several clinical trials are underway to elevate PGRN levels as one strategy to modulate the function of microglia and counteract neurodegenerative changes associated with various disease states. If successful, these and other immuno-neurology drugs have the potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders by harnessing the brain's immune system and shifting it from an inflammatory/pathological state to an enhanced physiological/homeostatic state. The eosinophilic granuloma is defined by dense cellular infiltration of eosinophils, macrophages, and mast cells, in addition to collagenolysis foci. Canine eosinophilic granuloma is a rare inflammatory skin disease that affects the oral mucosa. However, the cutaneous eosinophilic granuloma is more evident and can be found in the scrotum, testicles, perineum, and flanks. The etiology of eosinophilic granuloma in dogs is unclear but allergic processes can originate in granulomatous nodules or plaques. Affected dogs may experience itching, swelling, and, occasionally, pain. The histopathological analysis is necessary for a definitive diagnosis. The present case report described a 12-year-old male dog, Poodle, with a history of swelling, itching, and pain in the scrotum. Complete clinical staging was performed through blood count, biochemistry analysis, thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and electrocardiogram. The dog was submitted for surgical removal followed by histopathologic evaluation. Eosinophilic granuloma should be included in the differential diagnosis of solitary masses in the scrotal region. Human alphaherpesvirus 1 (HuAHV1) causes fatal neurologic infections in captive New World primates. To determine risks for interspecies transmission, we examined data for 13 free-ranging, black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) that died of HuAHV1 infection and had been in close contact with humans in anthropized areas in Brazil during 2012-2019. We evaluated pathologic changes in the marmosets, localized virus and antigen, and assessed epidemiologic features. The main clinical findings were neurologic signs, necrotizing meningoencephalitis, and ulcerative glossitis; 1 animal had necrotizing hepatitis. Transmission electron microscopy revealed intranuclear herpetic inclusions, and immunostaining revealed HuAHV1 and herpesvirus particles in neurons, glial cells, tongue mucosal epithelium, and hepatocytes. PCR confirmed HuAHV1 infection. These findings illustrate how disruption of the One Health equilibrium in anthropized environments poses risks for interspecies virus transmission with potential spillover not only from animals to humans but also from humans to free-ranging nonhuman primates or other animals. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic neglected disease of worldwide public health concern. Leptospira species can infect a wide range of wild and domestic mammals and lead to a spectrum of disease, including severe and fatal forms. Herein, we report for the first time a fatal Leptospira interrogans infection in a free‐ranging nonhuman primate (NHP), a black‐tufted marmoset. Icterus, pulmonary haemorrhage, interstitial nephritis, and hepatocellular dissociation were the main findings raising the suspicion of leptospirosis. Diagnostic confirmation was based on specific immunohistochemical and PCR assays for Leptospira species. Immunolocalization of leptospiral antigens and identification of pathogenic species (L. interrogans species) were important for better understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. One Health–related implications of free‐ranging NHPs in anthropized areas and transmission dynamics of human and animal leptospirosis are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review discusses the role of opioids in the corneal surface and the different pathways and therapeutic methods of management. A literature review was performed using PubMed database. For the database search, the main searching words "opioid" and "topical opioid treatment" were used with the descriptors "cornea", "ocular surface", "neuropathic corneal pain", "corneal sensitivity" and "naltrexone"; original scientific articles and reviews were included to achieve the purpose of the review. The endogenous opioid system has relevant functions in the organism, and in daily use, opioids are used as painkillers. However, these drugs may be employed for other indications as opioid pathways have a wide spectrum. The corneal surface for topical treatment is easily accessible, hence sparing the side effects of systemic opioids. Instillation of opioid antagonist substances, such as naltrexone, increases corneal healing rates and stimulates the division of corneal epithelium cells without deleterious effects. The natural modulation of endogenous opioids controls different forms of pain, including inflammatory and neuropathic pain, both in the ocular surface and in the central nervous system. There are diverse methods in controlling pain using opioids, especially in refractory forms. This review attempts to collect the literature about corneal surface and opioid pathways to provide an overview image and a possible direction of the news treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Surveillance of deaths in NHPs is a key point for the prevention of YF in humans. • Determination of hepatic pathological features are crucial for screening YF in NHPs. • YF-associated hepatic injuries may vary between South American NHPs genera. • Humans and NHPs show marked differences in the set of YF-associated hepatic lesions. The early detection and diagnosis of deaths in free-ranging non-human primates (NHPs) are key points for the surveillance of Yellow Fever (YF) in Brazil. The histopathological identification of infectious diseases remains very useful and reliable in the screening and detection of emerging zoonotic diseases such as YF. We surveyed data records and liver slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin from the Epizootics Surveillance Network to control YF, Ministry of Health of Brazil, to evaluate histopathological hallmarks for the diagnosis of the YF virus infection. We selected natural fatal cases in NHPs from the genera Alouatta spp., Callithrix spp., and Sapajus spp. with a positive immunohistochemical assay for YF in liver samples. Our findings showed the full-spectrum YF-associated hepatic lesions in all NHPs, but some histopathological findings differed in the distribution and intensity between the three genera. In our study, South American NHPs showed significant differences in the YF-associated hepatic histopathological features compared to fatal cases reported in humans. The cellular level of TDP-43 (also known as TARDBP) is tightly regulated; increases or decreases in TDP-43 have deleterious effects in cells. The predominant mechanism responsible for the regulation of the level of TDP-43 is an autoregulatory negative feedback loop. In this study, we identified an in vivo cause-effect relationship between Tardbp gene promoter methylation and specific histone modification and the TDP-43 level in tissues of mice at two different ages. Furthermore, epigenetic control was observed in mouse and human cultured cell lines. In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the formation of TDP-43-containing brain inclusions removes functional protein from the system. This phenomenon is continuous but compensated by newly synthesized protein. The balance between sequestration and new synthesis might become critical with ageing, if accompanied by an epigenetic modification-regulated decrease in newly synthesized TDP-43. Sequestration by aggregates would then decrease the amount of functional TDP-43 to a level lower than those needed by the cell and thereby trigger the onset of symptoms.
