Decreasing perovskite nanocrystal size increases radiative recombination due to the quantum confinement effect, but also increases the Auger recombination rate which leads to carrier imbalance in the emitting layers of electroluminescent devices. Here, we overcome this trade‐off by increasing the exciton effective mass without affecting the size, which is realized through the trace Cd2+ doping of formamidinium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals. We observe an ~2.7 times increase in the exciton binding energy benefiting from a slight distortion of the [BX6]4− octahedra caused by doping in the case of that the Auger recombination rate is almost unchanged. As a result, bright color‐saturated green emitting perovskite nanocrystals with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 96 % are obtained. Cd2+ doping also shifts up the energy levels of the nanocrystals, relative to the Fermi level so that heavily n‐doped emitters convert into only slightly n‐doped ones; this boosts the charge injection efficiency of the corresponding light‐emitting diodes. The light‐emitting devices based on those nanocrystals reached a high external quantum efficiency of 29.4 % corresponding to a current efficiency of 123 cd A−1, and showed dramatically improved device lifetime, with a narrow bandwidth of 22 nm and Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinates of (0.20, 0.76) for color‐saturated green emission for the electroluminescence peak centered at 534 nm, thus being fully compliant with the latest standard for wide color gamut displays. Zero‐dimensional lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit size‐dependent bandgap and carrier confinement compared to bulk counterparts due to the quantum confinement effect, making them essential for achieving wide‐color‐gamut displays, studying excitonic spin relaxation, and constructing superlattices. Despite their promising potential, they face a variety of technical bottlenecks, such as insufficient color reproducibility, limited large‐scale production, low stability, and toxicity. An outline of a research roadmap is provided in the review, which highlights key challenges in developing perovskite NCs for commercial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal-trihalide perovskite quantum dots combine the unique semiconducting properties of bulk perovskites with the controllable exciton dynamics benefiting from the quantum confinement effect. Composition- and size-adjustable electronic and optical properties of perovskites convert into a variety of applications. Here, we start from a brief introduction to perovskite quantum dots, followed by a detailed description of the synthesis methods and surface modification/passivation strategies of these nano-sized particles. Then, we review the applications of perovskite quantum dots including light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and lasers. Metal halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPls) have recently joined a rich family of 2D semiconductor nanomaterials. Quantum and dielectric confinement in these nanostructures endow them with useful optical properties, which include, but are not limited to, high linear and nonlinear absorption coefficients, narrow and tunable emission bands, and high photoluminescence quantum yield. These characteristics render perovskite NPls promising for applications in lighting, photodetection, nonlinear optics, and photocatalysis. Doping is a universal approach for tuning optical and electronic properties of semiconductor materials, and the B‐site doping of perovskite NPls allows the further improvement and adjustment on demand of the above‐mentioned optical properties and may result in the appearance of fundamentally new behavior through embedding optically active dopants. In this mini‐review, the basic knowledge about perovskite NPls is shortly summarized in terms of their colloidal synthesis, and then the B‐site doping of perovskite NPls is considered in terms of the existing approaches (in situ and post‐synthetic doping) and its effect on the optical characteristics (doping with self‐emitting ions such as Mn2+ and rare‐earth elements; consequences for the nonlinear optical response). Perovskite‐based light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with a mixed halide composition can be used to obtain the "pure red" emission, i.e., in the 620–650 nm range, required for high‐definition displays. However, fast halide ion migration induces phase separation in these materials under electric fields, resulting in poor spectral stability and low efficiency. Herein, a method for producing mixed halide CsPbI3‐xBrx quantum dots (QDs) is reported in which ion migration is suppressed. The mixed halide composition is first achieved by anion exchange between CsPbI3 QDs and hydrobromic acid (HBr), during that the bromine ions efficiently passivate the iodine vacancies of the QDs. The original oleic acid ligands are then exchanged for 1‐dodecanethiol (1‐DT), which suppresses halide ion migration via the strong binding of the sulfhydryl group with the QD surface. PeLEDs based on these QDs exhibit a pure‐red electroluminescence (EL) peak at 637 nm, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 21.8% with an average value of 20.4%, a peak luminance of 2653 cd m−2, and low EQE decease with increasing luminance. The EL spectrum of these devices is stable even at 6.7 V and they have an EQE half‐life of 70 min at an initial luminance of 150 cd m−2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have risen rapidly in luminescence efficiency and color purity. However, their high performance requires careful and complex pre‐treatment of precursors and precise regulation of the reaction atmosphere; otherwise, their emission will be weak and broad. To overcome these limitations, we develop a facile ligand exchange method using a new type of bidentate ligand, which is obtained by reacting cheap sulfur with tributylphosphine (S‐TBP). During ligand exchange, the double bond between P and S atoms breaks and a single bond is formed between them, after which S‐TBP switches into a bidentate ligand and binds to a perovskite NC at two points. With short‐chain S‐TBP ligands that have high spatial position resistance, both NC spacing and surface ligand density can be reduced, thereby improving carrier injection and transport. On the NC surface after ligand exchange, halogen vacancies were substantially filled, leading to a PbSP (Pb, S, and P elements) component‐dominated shell that greatly decreases trap density and enhances material stability. The resulting perovskite NCs are stable and bright with a photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈96 %, and an external quantum efficiency of 22 %. The interface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) determines their power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, the buried bottom surface of a perovskite film is efficiently passivated by using MoS2 quantum dots. The perovskite films prepared on top of MoS2-assisted substrates show enhanced crystallinity, as evidenced by improved photoluminescence and a prolonged emission lifetime. MoS2 quantum dots with a large bandgap of 2.68 eV not only facilitate hole collection but also prevent the photogenerated electrons from flowing to the hole transport layer. Overall promotion leads to decreased trap density and an enhanced built-in electric field, thus increasing the device PCE from 17.87% to 19.95%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) attract much attention for light-emitting applications due to their exceptional optical properties. More recently, perovskite NCs have begun to be considered a promising material for nonlinear optical applications. Numerous strategies have recently been developed to improve the properties of metal halide perovskite NCs. Among them, B-site doping is one of the most promising ways to enhance their brightness and stability. However, there is a lack of study of the influence of B-site doping on the nonlinear optical properties of inorganic perovskite NCs. Here, we demonstrate that Cd2+ doping simultaneously improves both the linear (higher photoluminescence quantum yield, larger exciton binding energy, reduced trap states density, and faster radiative recombination) and nonlinear (higher two- and three-photon absorption cross-sections) optical properties of CsPbBr3 NCs. Cd2+ doping results in a two-photon absorption cross-section, reaching 2.6 × 106 Goeppert-Mayer (GM), which is among the highest reported for CsPbBr3 NCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxygen sensors, using organic-inorganic and all-inorganic lead halide perovskites, have demonstrated huge advantages in operating temperature, responding time, and reversing oxygen content detection. Nevertheless, the toxicity and instability issues hinder their wide application. In this work, for the first time, we report a sensitive fluorescence oxygen detector based on lead-free double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 thin film. The sensor has a remarkable performance in terms of fast response time of ≈56 s, recovery time of ≈91 s, and a relatively low limit of detection (LOD) of 150 ppm. More importantly, the unencapsulated sensor still exhibits an obvious response at low oxygen concentrations after two-week storage in ambient, and the device also exhibits good humidity, light, and thermal stability. Consequently, the lead-free double perovskite (Cs 2 AgBiBr 6) will be promising environmentally friendly material in developing reversible, sensitive, high-efficiency, and stable perovskite oxygen sensors. Two-dimensional (2D) perovskite materials show enormous potential in optoelectronic applications owing to their exceptional thermal stability and unique lattice structures. However, research into anion-substituted 2D perovskites is relatively rare, particularly in the photoelectric information storage field. Here, an anion-based 2D perovskite Cs 2 Pb(SCN) 2 I 2 film with high orientation and high thermal-stability is achieved by simple low-temperature solution processing and the memristor of Al/Cs 2 Pb(SCN) 2 I 2 /FTO is established. The experimental evidence shows that: 1) In the absence of light irradiation, memristors present typical bipolar resistance switching behaviour with On/Off resistance ratio (>103) and reliable retention (>104 s); 2) By introducing light irradiation, it can achieve a more dependable memristor with decreased RS fluctuation and improved cycling endurance. In addition, by modifying the compliance current (I cc), it can realize multi-level storage function of memories with good high temperature endurance. Finally, the logic gate function is also demonstrated with these cells. The operational principles of memristor devices are comprised of the charge trapping and conductive filament mechanisms. The light irradiation reduces the ion migration barrier and enhances the conductivity of perovskite films, thus limiting the excessive growth of conductive filaments. Lead halide perovskite solar cells can be significantly improved with multifunctional additives such as carbon dots (CDs) with amine terminals via defect passivation and band alignment. Here, we determine rational guidelines for the usage of such quantum dots in perovskite solar cells by systematically studying their effects on crystal quality and carrier transport. The amine-terminated CDs homogeneously dispersed in precursors improve the crystal quality of perovskite films, but they reduce the hole mobility hampering hole extraction. In contrast, CDs deposited between the electron transport layer and active layer could promote spin-coated film quality and electron's extraction efficiently. So, the approaches of the carbon dots in device alters semiconductor properties and energy level structure. Interface engineering achieve better crystal quality and energy level alignment, which in turn affects charge collection, thereby increasing current density and power conversion efficiency. According to the findings of this study, when considering defect passivation by additives, the energy band alignment of the device should also be considered, since this could change carrier dynamics and device performance differently.
