In the past 20 years, divorce has increased in Indonesia. Indonesian statistics show that divorces initiated by women exceed those by men. One issue that is often neglected is how socioeconomic differences also play a role in this matter. Drawing on our collaborative research on Muslim divorces in Indonesia, this paper focuses on the interplay between divorce strategies and socioeconomic differences among Muslim couples. Our in-depth interviews with 93 Muslim men and women and 19 judges from Islamic courts show that class differences shape distinctive dynamics of divorce among Muslim Indonesians. Couples from less educated, lower-income backgrounds accept marriage dissolution more easily, with women becoming much less tolerant of men's behaviors such as infliction of domestic violence, infidelity, and failure to provide financial support. Educated, middle-class urban couples divorce for similar reasons but tend to experience a lengthier process accompanied by complex layers of conflict. Many educated women's narratives emphasize their ability to support themselves through working, and a desire to be free of a bad marriage at any cost. Class and education thus contribute to significant differences in the experience and trajectories of divorce in Indonesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study takes a comprehensive approach to the issue of Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET), delving into the often overlooked role of social class disparities. By using a multilevel mixed-effects logistic model and data from the 2022 National Social Economic Survey (SUSENAS), it provides a robust exploration of the complex socioeconomic factors that shape the transition to adulthood among youth. This study contributes to understanding social stratification and its impact on NEET youth. The main finding underscores the protective role of social class against youth being NEET, revealing that adolescents from higher social class households are less likely to disengage from study or work compared to those from lower social classes. The analysis uncovers determinants of NEET youth, including, among others, being female, married, having higher education, and having a female-headed household. Meanwhile, protective factors of NEET youth include, among others, age, disability, residing in a household whose head is working, and residing in urban areas. Comparing estimation results across social classes reveals that individuals from the low social class have a significantly higher propensity to be NEET than those from the high social class. We evaluate the impacts of a $120 million project in Indonesia conducted between 2014 and 2018 that sought to reduce stunting through a combination of (1) community‐driven development grants targeted at health and education outcomes, (2) training for health providers on infant and young child feeding and growth monitoring and (3) training for sanitarians on a local variation of community‐led total sanitation. This cluster randomized controlled trial involved 95 treatment and 95 control subdistricts across South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan provinces. Overall, we find no significant impacts on stunting, the study's primary outcome measure (0.5 pp; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −3.0 to 4.1 percentage points [pp]), or other longer‐term undernutrition outcomes about 1 year after the end of the project. The project had a modest impact on some secondary, more proximal outcomes related to maternal and child nutrition, including the percentage of mothers consuming the recommended number of iron‐folic acid pills during pregnancy (8.7 pp; 95% CI: 4.1–13.3 pp), 0–5‐month‐olds being exclusively breastfed (8.7 pp; 95% CI: 1.8–15.6 pp) and 6–23‐month‐olds receiving the number of recommended meals per day (8.5 pp; 95% CI: 3.8–13.2 pp). However, there were no significant impacts on other proximal outcomes like the number of pre‐natal and post‐natal checkups, child dietary diversity, child vitamin A receipt or the incidence of child diarrhoea. Our findings highlight that successfully implementing an integrated package of interventions to reduce child stunting may be challenging in practice. Project design needs to consider implementation reality along with best practice—for example, by piloting the synchronous implementation of multifaceted interventions or phasing them in more gradually over a longer timeframe. Key messages: A well‐resourced multifaceted project that sought to reduce stunting through (1) a health and education‐focused community‐driven development programme, (2) provider training on infant and young child feeding and growth monitoring, and (3) training on community‐led total sanitation had no impact on child stunting rates although it successfully improved aspects of maternal nutrition during pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding, and complementary feeding.Successfully implementing an integrated package of interventions to reduce child stunting may be challenging in practice, especially in a typical programme timeframe.Piloting the synchronous implementation of multifaceted interventions or phasing them in more gradually are potential solutions but might require funders to commit to longer implementation timeframes. Introduction: Overcoming under‑five mortality rate remains a great challenge for Indonesia to meet the national target despite its notable advancements and progress in reducing child mortality rate. Therefore, understanding risk factors of under‑five mortality is essential to enhance the health and well-being of children. This research seeks to investigate associated factors of under‑five mortality in Indonesia by using the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey data. Methods: The multilevel zero‑inflated and multilevel hurdle models are considered to handle unobserved heterogeneity that may occur at province level, and to model prevalence and risk of child death as a joint process, which are reported in terms of odds ratio (OR) and incidence ratio rate (IRR), respectively. Results: Lower number of household members (IRR = 0.803, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.784–0.823), older mother’s age at first birth (IRR = 1.020, 95% CI: 1.007– 1.032), higher number of children ever born (IRR = 1.491, 95% CI: 1.450–1.533), lower mother’s education (IRR = 1.224, 95% CI: 1.013–1.479), and lower father’s education (IRR = 1.232, 95% CI: 1.015–1.495) are significantly associated with higher total death numbers in children before the age of 5 years. Furthermore, the odds of no child death are significantly higher among mother who use a contraceptive method (OR = 11.088, 95% CI: 6.659–18.462) and among household in higher quantile wealth (OR = 1.133, 95% CI: 1.005–1.277). Conclusion: This evidence-based empirical highlights priority risk factors that might provide insight for policymakers, health professional, and the community in general to design appropriate intervention to help reduce the burden of under‑five mortality in the country. Aims: The aim was to examine the social determinants of health on human immunodeficiency virus care quality for children in Indonesia. Design: A qualitative design using constructivist grounded theory methods was utilized. Methods: Data were collected between 2019 and 2020 using in‐depth‐ interviews and memo writing. In total, 23 semi‐structured individual interviews with healthcare professionals, 12 with children with human immunodeficiency virus, and eight family members were conducted. Data were analysed with the two‐step initial coding and focused coding, along with the constant comparative method, theoretical sensitivity and memo writing. Results: Five themes were constructed from participants' perspectives on human immunodeficiency virus care for children: (1) living with a low‐socioeconomic status, (2) lacking instrumental support, (3) experiencing complicated procedures for public health insurance, (4) limited Human Immunodeficiency Virus care services for children and (5) lacking care coordination, policies and practices. Conclusion: Children living with human immunodeficiency virus had poor health outcomes, due to having a low‐socioeconomic status, reduced access to healthcare, coupled with a lack of social support services. Impact This study demonstrated how the social determinants of health negatively impact the quality of care for Indonesian children with human immunodeficiency virus and their families. Understanding these determinants would benefit health professionals, in particular nurses, to consider these factors in their assessment to create a holistic care plan for children living with human immunodeficiency virus and their families. This article examines the intersections between gender, domestic slavery, maritime empires and food in the early modern world, focusing on the Dutch East India Company's empire in the Indian Ocean during the eighteenth century. It traces the stories of three very different women in the Dutch Indian Ocean Empire and shows how food provisioning, preparation and consumption intersected with their gendered, racialised and classed roles in European colonial kitchens. In different ways, these women exerted sovereignty over food in colonial households which highlights their role as active participants in both shaping and contesting the social hierarchies of empire. Over the last two decades, Indonesia has experienced remarkable economic growth. However, the percentage of infants and young children meeting the minimum dietary diversity (MDD) criteria has stagnated. Despite the growing body of evidence of the association between MDD and socioeconomic factors, there is little information about socioeconomic inequalities in MDD in Indonesia. The current study seeks to quantify the wealth- and education-related inequalities in MDD among infants and young children in Indonesia and determine the contribution of different factors to these disparities. We included a total of 5038 children aged 6–23 months of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. We measured wealth- and education-related inequalities using the concentration curve and Wagstaff normalised concentration index. Using a concentration index decomposition analysis, we then examined factors contributing to wealth- and education-related inequalities in MDD. The concentration indices by household wealth and maternal education were 0.220 (p < 0.001) and 0.192 (p < 0.001), respectively, indicating more concentration of inequalities among the advantaged population. The decomposition analysis revealed that household wealth (29.8%), antenatal care (ANC) visits (16.6%), paternal occupation (15.1%), and maternal education (11.8%) explained the pro-rich inequalities in MDD in Indonesia. Maternal education (26.1%), household wealth (19.1%), ANC visits (14.9%), and paternal occupation (10.9%) made the most considerable contribution to education-related inequalities in MDD. There is substantial wealth- and education-related inequalities in MDD. Our findings suggest an urgent need to address the underlying causes of not reaching dietary diversity by promoting infant and young child feeding equity in Indonesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
