Abstract

The water-, and energy footprints of the processes in the pulp and paper industry are sizable enough to warrant investment of money and commitment of time truncate the same. Besides, there is also a nexus between water and energy here, with optimisation of the use of one of these resoruces enabling that of the other too. This streamlined review focuses on journal publications (originating from different parts of the world, and targeted at researchers and decision-makers in the industry) which train the lens on the optimisation of water use in this particular sector of the (forestry) bioeconomy. The synergies and complementarities which exist among different sustainable development goals (SDGs) , promise positive ripple effects, caused by attending to the truncation of the water footprint. The articles, in general, recommend effective in-plant wastewater treatment in combinaton with recirculating the treated effluent, and looking upon the water streams as carriers or bearers of valorisable substances – organics which can yield a host of bio-products in bio-refineries, including bio-energy. Availing of water-pinch analysis as a tool to uncover possibilities of water use in a cascade (depending upon the requirements imposed on the water, by processes downstream in the cascade), has been shown to aid in the optimisation of both water use and energy demand within the plant. One case study, for example, showed that the demand for steam can be decreased by about 4 GJ per ton of output, by recovering the waste heat in the water streams.

Abstract

Mass production of paper is one of the significant factors that are contributing to increase in carbon outrush in the global ecological system. The paper trade releases large volumes of air, water, and soil pollutants, which pony up to green house gasses. The rotted paper releases methane gas, which is many times more hazardous than carbon dioxide. Paperless business is a vital environmental business practice that is better for the upliftment of the current degrading environment. Global corporations are promoting paperless workplaces to move a step forward towards a sustainable ecological system and achieve the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. The research study after observation opined that although various challenges are being portrayed by employing digitalization of workplaces still working paperless is quite fruitful for the global ecological system. The digital innovations are the only alternatives available in the current times for the paper based job places. In this research study fairly was also studied the critical aspect of paperless workplace. On analyzing the dark data of the global corporeal world it was depicted that digitalization is also enhancing the carbon footprint. Abstract

Trade unions play an important role in ensuring that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated into the development agenda and strategies of countries. The findings from in-depth online interviews with trade union officers from seven national labour confederations and senior ILO officials in five Asian countries, complemented by a review of secondary sources, show that, depending on a set of factors, trade unions utilize a variety of strategies in influencing their country’s commitments to and progress on achieving the SDGs. The paper argues that both the strategies and outcomes of the SDG-related engagements of the unions in three of the five countries, which are influenced by several important factors, have contributed, albe-it to varying degrees, to their revitalization in terms of the development and strengthening of their power resources, particularly the unions’ institutional power. Abstract

PLEASE GO TO LATEST VERSION In this report we demonstrate how we made the multi-lingual text classifier to match research papers to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We trained the BERT multi-language model to classify the 169 individual SDG Targets, based on the English abstracts in the corpus of 1.4 million research papers. We gathered that data using Scopus with the Aurora SDG Query model v5, which has an evaluated average precision of 70% and recall of 14%. This is a follow-up project of the query based Aurora SDG classification model v5. The purpose of this project is to try and tackle several issues: 1. to label also research output to an SDG that is written in a non-english language, 2. to include papers that use other terms than the exact terms used in keyword searches, 3. to have a classification model that works independent from any other database specific query language. In this report we show how we decided to use the abstracts only and the mBERT model to train the classifier. Also we show why we trained 169 individual models, instead of 1 multi-label model, including the evaluation for prediction. We will show how to prepare the data for training, and how to run the code to train the models on multiple GPU cores. Next we show how to prepare the data for prediction and how to use the code to predict English and non-English texts. And finally we evaluate the model by reviewing a sample of non-English research papers, and provide some tips to increase the reliability of the predicted outcomes.
