Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a powerful technique for extracting valuable information from unstructured electronic health records (EHRs). However, a prerequisite for NLP is the availability of high-quality annotated datasets. To date, there is a lack of effective methods to guide the research effort of manually annotating unstructured datasets, which can hinder NLP performance. Therefore, this study develops a five-step workflow for manually annotating unstructured datasets, including (1) annotator training and familiarising with the text corpus, (2) vocabulary identification, (3) annotation schema development, (4) annotation execution, and (5) result validation. This framework was then applied to annotate agitation symptoms from the unstructured EHRs of 40 Australian residential aged care facilities. The annotated corpus achieved an accuracy rate of 96%. This suggests that our proposed annotation workflow can be used in manual data processing to develop annotated training corpus for developing NLP algorithms.

Nursing staff record observations about older people under their care in free-text nursing notes. These notes contain older people's care needs, disease symptoms, frequency of symptom occurrence, nursing actions, etc. Therefore, it is vital to develop a technique to uncover important data from these notes. This study developed and evaluated a deep learning and transfer learning-based named entity recognition (NER) model for extracting symptoms of agitation in dementia from the nursing notes. We employed a Clinical BioBERT model for word embedding. Then we applied bidirectional long-short-term memory (BiLSTM) and conditional random field (CRF) models for NER on nursing notes from Australian residential aged care facilities. The proposed NER model achieves satisfactory performance in extracting symptoms of agitation in dementia with a 75% F1 score and 78% accuracy. We will further develop machine learning models to recommend the optimal nursing actions to manage agitation.

Objective: Epilepsy surgery is known to be underutilized. Machine learning-natural language processing (ML-NLP) may be able to assist with identifying patients suitable for referral for epilepsy surgery evaluation., Methods: Data were collected from two tertiary hospitals for patients seen in neurology outpatients for whom the diagnosis of "epilepsy" was mentioned. Individual case note review was undertaken to characterize the nature of the diagnoses discussed in these notes, and whether those with epilepsy fulfilled prespecified criteria for epilepsy surgery workup (namely focal drug refractory epilepsy without contraindications). ML-NLP algorithms were then developed using fivefold cross-validation on the first free-text clinic note for each patient to identify these criteria., Results: There were 457 notes included in the study, of which 250 patients had epilepsy. There were 37 (14.8%) individuals who fulfilled the prespecified criteria for epilepsy surgery referral without described contraindications, 32 (12.8%) of whom were not referred for epilepsy surgical evaluation in the given clinic visit. In the prediction of suitability for epilepsy surgery workup using the prespecified criteria, the tested models performed similarly. For example, the random forest model returned an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve of 0.97 (95% confidence interval 0.93-1.0) for this task, sensitivity of 1.0, and specificity of 0.93., Significance: This study has shown that there are patients in tertiary hospitals in South Australia who fulfill prespecified criteria for epilepsy surgery evaluation who may not have been referred for such evaluation. ML-NLP may assist with the identification of patients suitable for such referral., Plain Language Summary: Epilepsy surgery is a beneficial treatment for selected individuals with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, it is vastly underutilized. One reason for this underutilization is a lack of prompt referral of possible epilepsy surgery candidates to comprehensive epilepsy centers. Natural language processing, coupled with machine learning, may be able to identify possible epilepsy surgery candidates through the analysis of unstructured clinic notes. Background: Social media has the potential to be of great value in understanding patterns in public health using large-scale analysis approaches (eg, data science and natural language processing [NLP]), 2 of which have been used in public health: sentiment analysis and topic modeling; however, their use in the area of food security and public health nutrition is limited., Objective: This study aims to explore the potential use of NLP tools to gather insights from real-world social media data on the public health issue of food security., Methods: A search strategy for obtaining tweets was developed using food security terms. Tweets were collected using the Twitter application programming interface from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021, filtered for Australia-based users only. Sentiment analysis of the tweets was performed using the Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner. Topic modeling exploring the content of tweets was conducted using latent Dirichlet allocation with BigML (BigML, Inc). Sentiment, topic, and engagement (the sum of likes, retweets, quotations, and replies) were compared across years., Results: In total, 38,070 tweets were collected from 14,880 Twitter users. Overall, the sentiment when discussing food security was positive, although this varied across the 3 years. Positive sentiment remained higher during the COVID-19 lockdown periods in Australia. The topic model contained 10 topics (in order from highest to lowest probability in the data set): "Global production," "Food insecurity and health," "Use of food banks," "Giving to food banks," "Family poverty," "Food relief provision," "Global food insecurity," "Climate change," "Australian food insecurity," and "Human rights." The topic "Giving to food banks," which focused on support and donation, had the highest proportion of positive sentiment, and "Global food insecurity," which covered food insecurity prevalence worldwide, had the highest proportion of negative sentiment. When compared with news, there were some events, such as COVID-19 support payment introduction and bushfires across Australia, that were associated with high periods of positive or negative sentiment. Topics related to food insecurity prevalence, poverty, and food relief in Australia were not consistently more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic than before the pandemic. Negative tweets received substantially higher engagement across 2019 and 2020. There was no clear relationship between topics that were more likely to be positive or negative and have higher or lower engagement, indicating that the identified topics are discrete issues., Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated the potential use of sentiment analysis and topic modeling to explore evolution in conversations on food security using social media data. BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a serious health risk facing older people living in residential aged care facilities. Aged care staff record observations and concerns about older people in electronic health records (EHR), including free-text progress notes. These insights are yet to be unleashed. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the risk factors for malnutrition in structured and unstructured electronic health data. METHODS: Data of weight loss and malnutrition were extracted from the de-identified EHR records of a large aged care organization in Australia. A literature review was conducted to identify causative factors for malnutrition. Natural language processing (NLP) techniques were applied to progress notes to extract these causative factors. The NLP performance was evaluated by the parameters of sensitivity, specificity and F1-Score. RESULTS: The NLP methods were highly accurate in extracting the key data, values for 46 causative variables, from the free-text client progress notes. Thirty three percent (1,469 out of 4,405) of the clients were malnourished. The structured, tabulated data only recorded 48% of these malnourished clients, far less than that (82%) identified from the progress notes, suggesting the importance of using NLP technology to uncover the information from nursing notes to fully understand the health status of the vulnerable older people in residential aged care. CONCLUSION: This study identified 33% of older people suffered from malnutrition, lower than those reported in the similar setting in previous studies. Our study demonstrates that NLP technology is important for uncovering the key information about health risks for older people in residential aged care. Background: This study aimed to examine the accuracy with which multiple natural language processing artificial intelligence models could predict discharge and readmissions after general surgery., Methods: Natural language processing models were derived and validated to predict discharge within the next 48 hours and 7 days and readmission within 30 days (based on daily ward round notes and discharge summaries, respectively) for general surgery inpatients at 2 South Australian hospitals. Natural language processing models included logistic regression, artificial neural networks, and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers., Results: For discharge prediction analyses, 14,690 admissions were included. For readmission prediction analyses, 12,457 patients were included. For prediction of discharge within 48 hours, derivation and validation data set area under the receiver operator characteristic curves were, respectively: 0.86 and 0.86 for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, 0.82 and 0.81 for logistic regression, and 0.82 and 0.81 for artificial neural networks. For prediction of discharge within 7 days, derivation and validation data set area under the receiver operator characteristic curves were, respectively: 0.82 and 0.81 for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, 0.75 and 0.72 for logistic regression, and 0.68 and 0.67 for artificial neural networks. For readmission prediction within 30 days, derivation and validation data set area under the receiver operator characteristic curves were, respectively: 0.55 and 0.59 for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers and 0.77 and 0.62 for logistic regression., Conclusion: Modern natural language processing models, particularly Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, can effectively and accurately identify general surgery patients who will be discharged in the next 48 hours. Background: Incidental durotomy is an intraoperative complication in spine surgery that can lead to postoperative complications, increased length of stay, and higher healthcare costs. Natural language processing (NLP) is an artificial intelligence method that assists in understanding free-text notes that may be useful in the automated surveillance of adverse events in orthopaedic surgery. A previously developed NLP algorithm is highly accurate in the detection of incidental durotomy on internal validation and external validation in an independent cohort from the same country. External validation in a cohort with linguistic differences is required to assess the transportability of the developed algorithm, referred to geographical validation. Ideally, the performance of a prediction model, the NLP algorithm, is constant across geographic regions to ensure reproducibility and model validity., Question/purpose: Can we geographically validate an NLP algorithm for the automated detection of incidental durotomy across three independent cohorts from two continents?, Methods: Patients 18 years or older undergoing a primary procedure of (thoraco)lumbar spine surgery were included. In Massachusetts, between January 2000 and June 2018, 1000 patients were included from two academic and three community medical centers. In Maryland, between July 2016 and November 2018, 1279 patients were included from one academic center, and in Australia, between January 2010 and December 2019, 944 patients were included from one academic center. The authors retrospectively studied the free-text operative notes of included patients for the primary outcome that was defined as intraoperative durotomy. Incidental durotomy occurred in 9% (93 of 1000), 8% (108 of 1279), and 6% (58 of 944) of the patients, respectively, in the Massachusetts, Maryland, and Australia cohorts. No missing reports were observed. Three datasets (Massachusetts, Australian, and combined Massachusetts and Australian) were divided into training and holdout test sets in an 80:20 ratio. An extreme gradient boosting (an efficient and flexible tree-based algorithm) NLP algorithm was individually trained on each training set, and the performance of the three NLP algorithms (respectively American, Australian, and combined) was assessed by discrimination via area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC-ROC; this measures the model's ability to distinguish patients who obtained the outcomes from those who did not), calibration metrics (which plot the predicted and the observed probabilities) and Brier score (a composite of discrimination and calibration). In addition, the sensitivity (true positives, recall), specificity (true negatives), positive predictive value (also known as precision), negative predictive value, F1-score (composite of precision and recall), positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio were calculated., Results: The combined NLP algorithm (the combined Massachusetts and Australian data) achieved excellent performance on independent testing data from Australia (AUC-ROC 0.97 [95% confidence interval 0.87 to 0.99]), Massachusetts (AUC-ROC 0.99 [95% CI 0.80 to 0.99]) and Maryland (AUC-ROC 0.95 [95% CI 0.93 to 0.97]). The NLP developed based on the Massachusetts cohort had excellent performance in the Maryland cohort (AUC-ROC 0.97 [95% CI 0.95 to 0.99]) but worse performance in the Australian cohort (AUC-ROC 0.74 [95% CI 0.70 to 0.77])., Conclusion: We demonstrated the clinical utility and reproducibility of an NLP algorithm with combined datasets retaining excellent performance in individual countries relative to algorithms developed in the same country alone for detection of incidental durotomy. Further multi-institutional, international collaborations can facilitate the creation of universal NLP algorithms that improve the quality and safety of orthopaedic surgery globally. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great potential to improve healthcare, but implementation into routine practice remains a challenge. This study scoped the extent to which AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) is being implemented into routine practice in Australian healthcare organisations. An environmental scan of publicly available data was undertaken to identify AI applications. Publicly available data consisted of news posts from Australian public healthcare organisations and conference proceedings from key research organisations. Two researchers reviewed and analysed posts related to AI applications to create a list of potential implementation case studies. The final list of AI applications was reviewed by a governance committee in order to identify any missing applications. One application was identified by the governance committee and subsequently added. The environmental scan identified eighteen AI applications, of which eleven met all eligibility criteria. Only one application included NLP. Twelve applications were included when the application identified by the governance committee was added to the list. Implementation of AI applications is spread across four broad categories of use: 1) Decision Support, 2) Monitoring Treatment Effectiveness, 3) Personalised Care and 4) Risk Prediction.

Geological maps are powerful models for visualizing the complex distribution of rock types through space and time. However, the descriptive information that forms the basis for a preferred map interpretation is typically stored in geological map databases as unstructured text data that are difficult to use in practice. Herein we apply natural language processing (NLP) to geoscientific text data from Canada, the U.S., and Australia to address that knowledge gap. First, rock descriptions, geological ages, lithostratigraphic and lithodemic information, and other long-form text data are translated to numerical vectors, i.e., a word embedding, using a geoscience language model. Network analysis of word associations, nearest neighbors, and principal component analysis are then used to extract meaningful semantic relationships between rock types. We further demonstrate using simple Naive Bayes classifiers and the area under receiver operating characteristics plots (AUC) how word vectors can be used to: (1) predict the locations of "pegmatitic" (AUC = 0.962) and "alkalic" (AUC = 0.938) rocks; (2) predict mineral potential for Mississippi-Valley-type (AUC = 0.868) and clastic-dominated (AUC = 0.809) Zn-Pb deposits; and (3) search geoscientific text data for analogues of the giant Mount Isa clastic-dominated Zn-Pb deposit using the cosine similarities between word vectors. This form of semantic search is a promising NLP approach for assessing mineral potential with limited training data. Overall, the results highlight how geoscience language models and NLP can be used to extract new knowledge from unstructured text data and reduce the mineral exploration search space for critical raw materials. ChatGPT has become a prominent tool for fostering personalized and interactive learning with the advancements in AI technology. This study analyzes 212 academic research articles indexed in the Scopus database as of July 2023. It maps the trajectory of educational studies on ChatGPT, identifying primary themes, influential authors, and contributing institutions. By employing bibliometric indicators and network analysis, the study explores collaboration patterns, citation trends, and the evolution of research interests. The findings show the exponential growth of interest in leveraging ChatGPT for educational purposes and provide insights into the specific educational domains and contexts that have garnered the most attention. Furthermore, the study reveals the collaborative dynamics and intellectual foundations shaping the field by examining co-authorship and citation networks. This bibliometric analysis contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the current state of ChatGPT research in education, offering researchers and practitioners valuable insights into evolving trends and potential future directions for this innovative aspect of AI and learning.

Clinical coding is an important task, which is required for accurate activity-based funding. Natural language processing may be able to assist with improving the efficiency and accuracy of clinical coding. The aims of this study were to explore the feasibility of using natural language processing for stroke hospital admissions, employed with open-source software libraries, to aid in the identification of potentially misclassified (1) category of Adjacent Diagnosis Related Groups (ADRG), (2) the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) diagnoses, and (3) Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG). Data was collected for consecutive individuals admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital Stroke Unit over a five-month period for misclassification identification analysis. 152 admissions were included in the study. Using free-text discharge summaries, a random forest classifier correctly identified two cases classified as B70 ("Stroke and Other Cerebrovascular Disorders") that should be classified as B02 (having received endovascular thrombectomy). A regular expression-based analysis correctly identified 33 cases in which ataxia was present but was not coded. Two cases were identified that should have been classified as B70D, rather than B70A/B/C, based on transfer to another centre within five days of admission. A variety of techniques may be useful to help identify misclassifications in ADRG, ICD-10-AM and DRG codes. Such techniques can be implemented with open-source software libraries, and may have significant financial implications. Psychotic symptoms are typically measured using clinical ratings, but more objective and sensitive metrics are needed. Hence, we will assess thought disorder using the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) heuristic for language production, and its recommended paradigm of "linguistic corpus-based analyses of language output". Positive thought disorder (e.g., tangentiality and derailment) can be assessed using word-embedding approaches that assess semantic coherence, whereas negative thought disorder (e.g., concreteness, poverty of speech) can be assessed using part-of-speech (POS) tagging to assess syntactic complexity. We aim to establish convergent validity of automated linguistic metrics with clinical ratings, assess normative demographic variance, determine cognitive and functional correlates, and replicate their predictive power for psychosis transition among at-risk youths. This study will assess language production in 450 English-speaking individuals in Australia and Canada, who have recent onset psychosis, are at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis, or who are healthy volunteers, all well-characterized for cognition, function and symptoms. Speech will be elicited using open-ended interviews. Audio files will be transcribed and preprocessed for automated natural language processing (NLP) analyses of coherence and complexity. Data analyses include canonical correlation, multivariate linear regression with regularization, and machine-learning classification of group status and psychosis outcome. This prospective study aims to characterize language disturbance across stages of psychosis using computational approaches, including psychometric properties, normative variance and clinical correlates, important for biomarker development. While ChatGPT has recently become very popular, AI has a long history and philosophy. This paper intends to explore the promises and pitfalls of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) AI and potentially future technologies by adopting a speculative methodology. Speculative future narratives with a specific focus on educational contexts are provided in an attempt to identify emerging themes and discuss their implications for education in the 21st century. Affordances of (using) AI in Education (AIEd) and possible adverse effects are identified and discussed which emerge from the narratives. It is argued that now is the best of times to define human vs AI contribution to education because AI can accomplish more and more educational activities that used to be the prerogative of human educators. Therefore, it is imperative to rethink the respective roles of technology and human educators in education with a future-oriented mindset.

The global higher education sector has been significantly disrupted by the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, especially in relation to its implications for assessment. However, few studies to date have explored student perspectives on these tools. This article reports on one of the first large-scale quantitative studies of student views on generative artificial intelligence at an Australian university (n = 1,135). When the survey was conducted, most students had low knowledge, experience, and confidence in using these tools. These results varied across disciplines and across some student sub-groups, such as mature-age students and international students. Confidence appeared to increase with experience, although the data also revealed a portion of students that have never used these tools yet still felt confident in using them. In exploring these results, this article aims to shed new light on this fast-evolving landscape and inform the future direction of supporting students to engage with generative artificial intelligence tools appropriately.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools, notably ChatGPT, are increasingly recognised for their transformative potential in higher education. This study employs a detailed case study approach complemented by a survey, delving into ChatGPT's impact on pedagogical practices, student engagement, and academic performance. It involved 74 undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in data analytics courses in Australia. The quantitative analysis highlights ChatGPT's role in providing personalised and on-demand support, which is highly valued among users for its flexibility and responsiveness, meeting a critical demand in educational settings. Notably, the study identifies a medium effect size ([eta squared] = 0.173) in perceived benefits, indicating that ChatGPT accounts for approximately 17.3% of the variance in improved academic outcomes. However, challenges such as ChatGPT's limited understanding of complex queries and the lack of human interactions are primary concerns, with a medium effect size ([eta squared]=0.289) suggesting significant areas for improvement. Furthermore, statistical analyses reveal a clear relationship between the frequency of ChatGPT usage and the perception of its benefits, underscoring the transformative potential for users who have integrated it into their academic practices. Despite these challenges, the differential impact on users versus non-users highlights the potential for ChatGPT to foster more engaging and effective educational practices. The findings advocate for targeted strategies to epitomise ChatGPT's integration into educational settings, emphasising the need for ongoing research and the development of comprehensive guidelines to navigate its complexities and maximise its educational benefits.

Triaging of medical referrals can be completed using various machine learning techniques, but trained models with historical datasets may not be relevant as the clinical criteria for triaging are regularly updated and changed. This paper proposes the use of machine learning techniques coupled with the clinical prioritisation criteria (CPC) of Queensland (QLD), Australia, to deliver better triaging for referrals in accordance with the CPC's updates. The unique feature of the proposed model is its non-reliance on the past datasets for model training. Medical Natural Language Processing (NLP) was applied in the proposed approach to process the medical referrals, which are unstructured free text. The proposed multiclass classification approach achieved a Micro F 1 score = 0.98. The proposed approach can help in the processing of two million referrals that the QLD health service receives annually; therefore, they can deliver better and more efficient health services.

Objective: Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated mixed results in their ability to pass various specialist medical examination and their performance within the field of emergency medicine remains unknown. Methods: We explored the performance of three prevalent LLMs (OpenAI's GPT series, Google's Bard, and Microsoft's Bing Chat) on a practice ACEM primary examination. Results: All LLMs achieved a passing score, with scores with GPT 4.0 outperforming the average candidate. Conclusion: Large language models, by passing the ACEM primary examination, show potential as tools for medical education and practice. However, limitations exist and are discussed. Background: Cancer stage at diagnosis is essential for understanding cancer outcomes, guiding cancer control activities and healthcare services, and enabling benchmarking nationally and internationally. Yet, most cancer registries in Australia do not routinely collect this data. This study explored key stakeholders' perceptions of implementing cancer staging utilising Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning algorithms within the Western Australian Cancer Registry. Methods: Perceptions of key breast and colorectal cancer stakeholders, including registry staff, clinicians, consumers, data scientists, biostatisticians, data management, healthcare staff, and health researchers, were collected. Prospective and retrospective qualitative proformas at two-time points of the Western Australian Cancer Staging Project were employed. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research was used to guide data collection, analysis and interpretation embedded in a Participatory Action Research approach. Data analysis also incorporated Framework Analysis and an adapted version of grading qualitative data using a visual traffic light labelling system to highlight the levels of positivity, negativity, and implementation concern. Results: Twenty-nine pre-proformas and 18 post-proformas were completed online via REDCap. The grading and visual presentation of barriers and enablers aided interpretation and reviewing predicted intervention outcomes. Of the selected constructs, complexity (the perceived difficulty of the intervention) was the strongest barrier and tension for change (the situation needing change) was the strongest enabler. Implementing cancer staging into the Western Australian Cancer Registry was considered vital. Benefits included improved knowledge and understanding of various outcomes (e.g., treatment received as per Optimum Care Pathways) and benchmarking. Barriers included compatibility issues with current systems/workflows, departmental/higher managerial support, and future sustainment. Conclusions: The findings aid further review of data gaps, additional cancer streams, standardising cancer staging and future improvements. The study offers an adapted version of a rapid qualitative data collection and analytic approach for establishing barriers and enablers. Chatbots have experienced significant growth over the past decade, with a proliferation of new applications across various domains. Previous studies also demonstrate the trend of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, being adopted in libraries. The purpose of this study is to determine the current research priorities and findings in the field of chatbots in libraries. A systematic literature review was performed utilising the PRISMA checklist and the databases Scopus and Web of Science, identifying 5734 records. Upon conducting the first screening, abstract screening, full-text assessment, and quality assessments guided by the CASP appraisal checklist, 19 papers were deemed suitable for inclusion in the review. The results of the review indicate that the majority of the existing studies were empirical in nature (primarily adopting qualitative methods) and technology reviews with a focus on reviewing the implementation and maintenance, design, evaluation, characteristics, and application of chatbots. The chatbots of interest were mainly text-based and guided chatbots, with closed-source tools with access portals mostly built on library web pages or integrated with social software. The research findings primarily concerned the development models and necessary tools and technologies, the application of chatbots in libraries. Our systematic review also suggests that studies on chatbots in libraries are still in the early stages. This study is a follow-up to previous research conducted in 2012 on computer-assisted language testing (CALT) that applied a survey approach to investigate the use of technology in sign language testing worldwide. The goal of the current study was to replicate the 2012 study and to obtain updated information on the use of technology in sign language testing. Another goal was to broaden the scope of the previous study by also considering the use of automatic sign language recognition and production (by avatars) in applied testing scenarios through technologies that make use of artificial intelligence (AI). Thirty-two sign language testing professionals participated in the current study. The results of the survey confirm the findings from 2012, but also raise new issues for future research (trends) related to sign language testing, such as the use of automatic sign language recognition for automatic scoring and the problem of acquiring funding for developing and maintaining web-based sign language testing platforms.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), is evolving quickly and having a significant impact on the higher education sector. Although the impact of ChatGPT on academic integrity processes is a key concern, little is known about whether academics can reliably recognise texts that have been generated by AI. This qualitative study applies Turing's Imitation Game to investigate 16 education academics' perceptions of two pairs of texts written by either ChatGPT or a human. Pairs of texts, written in response to the same task, were used as the stimulus for interviews that probed academics' perceptions of text authorship and the textual features that were important in their decision-making. Results indicated academics were only able to identify AI-generated texts half of the time, highlighting the sophistication of contemporary generative AI technology. Academics perceived the following categories as important for their decision-making: voice, word usage, structure, task achievement and flow. All five categories of decision-making were variously used to rationalise both accurate and inaccurate decisions about text authorship. The implications of these results are discussed with a particular focus on what strategies can be applied to support academics more effectively as they manage the ongoing challenge of AI in higher education.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, its impact on academic environments, especially in postgraduate research supervision, becomes increasingly significant. This study explored the impact of ChatGPT, an advanced AI conversational model, on five dimensions of research supervision: functional, enculturation, critical thinking, emancipation and relationship development. Using a qualitative approach, we examined the practices and perspectives of 20 postgraduate research students with at least 4 months' experience of using ChatGPT in research activities in Australia. The study revealed several areas of impact, including accelerated research progress, enhanced research quality, improved scholarly development and professional skills, enhanced critical thinking, increased student confidence and autonomy, and a deeper supervisory relationship. The findings suggest a shift in the roles and responsibilities of supervisors and students: the former provides strategic direction and high-level guidance, while the latter transits from apprentices to autonomous researchers due to the independence fostered by ChatGPT. This shift suggests an evolving model of postgraduate research supervision, with educational technology acting as epistemic tools to enhance the supervisory process. The study also considers the ethical implications of AI-enabled support.

Introduction: Digitized patient progress notes from general practice represent a significant resource for clinical and public health research but cannot feasibly and ethically be used for these purposes without automated de-identification. Internationally, several open-source natural language processing tools have been developed, however, given wide variations in clinical documentation practices, these cannot be utilized without appropriate review. We evaluated the performance of four de-identification tools and assessed their suitability for customization to Australian general practice progress notes., Methods: Four tools were selected: three rule-based (HMS Scrubber, MIT De-id, Philter) and one machine learning (MIST). 300 patient progress notes from three general practice clinics were manually annotated with personally identifying information. We conducted a pairwise comparison between the manual annotations and patient identifiers automatically detected by each tool, measuring recall (sensitivity), precision (positive predictive value), f1-score (harmonic mean of precision and recall), and f2-score (weighs recall 2x higher than precision). Error analysis was also conducted to better understand each tool's structure and performance., Results: Manual annotation detected 701 identifiers in seven categories. The rule-based tools detected identifiers in six categories and MIST in three. Philter achieved the highest aggregate recall (67%) and the highest recall for NAME (87%). HMS Scrubber achieved the highest recall for DATE (94%) and all tools performed poorly on LOCATION. MIST achieved the highest precision for NAME and DATE while also achieving similar recall to the rule-based tools for DATE and highest recall for LOCATION. Philter had the lowest aggregate precision (37%), however preliminary adjustments of its rules and dictionaries showed a substantial reduction in false positives., Conclusion: Existing off-the-shelf solutions for automated de-identification of clinical text are not immediately suitable for our context without modification. Understanding antimicrobial usage patterns and encouraging appropriate antimicrobial usage is a critical component of antimicrobial stewardship. Studies using VetCompass Australia and Natural Language Processing (NLP) have demonstrated antimicrobial usage patterns in companion animal practices across Australia. Doing so has highlighted the many obstacles and barriers to the task of converting raw clinical notes into a format that can be readily queried and analysed. We developed NLP systems using rules‐based algorithms and machine learning to automate the extraction of data describing the key elements to assess appropriate antimicrobial use. These included the clinical indication, antimicrobial agent selection, dose and duration of therapy. Our methods were applied to over 4.4 million companion animal clinical records across Australia on all consultations with antimicrobial use to help us understand what antibiotics are being given and why on a population level. Of these, approximately only 40% recorded the reason why antimicrobials were prescribed, along with the dose and duration of treatment. NLP and deep learning might be able to overcome the difficulties of harvesting free text data from clinical records, but when the essential data are not recorded in the clinical records, then, this becomes an insurmountable obstacle. Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) contain clinical narrative text that is of great potential value to medical researchers. However, this information is mixed with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that presents risks to patient and clinician confidentiality. This paper presents an end-to-end de-identification framework to automatically remove PII from Australian hospital discharge summaries. Our corpus included 600 hospital discharge summaries which were extracted from the EMRs of two principal referral hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Our end-to-end de-identification framework consists of three components: (1) Annotation: labelling of PII in the 600 hospital discharge summaries using five pre-defined categories: person, address, date of birth, individual identification number, phone/fax number; (2) Modelling: training six named entity recognition (NER) deep learning base-models on balanced and imbalanced datasets; and evaluating ensembles that combine all six base-models, the three base-models with the best F1 scores and the three base-models with the best recall scores respectively, using token-level majority voting and stacking methods; and (3) De-identification: removing PII from the hospital discharge summaries. Our results showed that the ensemble model combined using the stacking Support Vector Machine (SVM) method on the three base-models with the best F1 scores achieved excellent results with a F1 score of 99.16% on the test set of our corpus. We also evaluated the robustness of our modelling component on the 2014 i2b2 de-identification dataset. Our ensemble model, which uses the token-level majority voting method on all six base-models, achieved the highest F1 score of 96.24% at strict entity matching and the highest F1 score of 98.64% at binary token-level matching compared to two state-of-the-art methods. The end-to-end framework provides a robust solution to de-identifying clinical narrative corpuses safely. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the field of surgery by improving diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and reducing costs. Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have gained attention for their ability to mimic human conversation and respond intelligently to user prompts. LLMs like ChatGPT can streamline tasks such as symptom assessment, diagnostic decision support, and patient education. They also have potential applications in surgical education and research. However, there are concerns about the perpetuation of racism and inequity within AI systems, as well as data privacy and sovereignty issues. OBJECTIVES: Mental illness is known to adversely affect the physical health of patients in primary and acute care settings; however, its impact on critically ill patients is less well studied. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes of patients admitted to the ICU with a preexisting mental health disorder. DESIGN: A multicenter, retrospective cohort study using linked data from electronic ICU clinical progress notes and the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Adult Patient Database. SETTING/PATIENTS: All patients admitted to eight Australian adult ICUs in the calendar year 2019. Readmissions within the same hospitalization were excluded. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Natural language processing techniques were used to classify preexisting mental health disorders in participants based on clinician documentation in electronic ICU clinical progress notes. Sixteen thousand two hundred twenty-eight patients (58% male) were included in the study, of which 5,044 (31.1%) had a documented preexisting mental health disorder. Affective disorders were the most common subtype occurring in 2,633 patients (16.2%), followed by anxiety disorders, occurring in 1,611 patients (9.9%). Mixed-effects regression modeling found patients with a preexisting mental health disorder stayed in ICU 13% longer than other patients (β-coefficient, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.10–0.15) and were more likely to experience invasive ventilation (odds ratio, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.30–1.56). Severity of illness and ICU mortality rates were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with preexisting mental health disorders form a significant subgroup within the ICU. The presence of a preexisting mental health disorder is associated with greater ICU length of stay and higher rates of invasive ventilation, suggesting these patients may have a different clinical trajectory to patients with no mental health history. Further research is needed to better understand the reasons for these adverse outcomes and to develop interventions to better support these patients during and after ICU admission. Using a suite of artificial intelligence technologies, the current study sought to determine the prevalence of agitated behaviors in people with dementia in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) in Australia. Computerized natural language processing allowed extraction of agitation instances from the free-text nursing progress notes, a component of electronic health records in RACFs. In total, 59 observable agitated behaviors were found. No difference was found in dementia prevalence between female and male clients (44.1%), across metropolitan and regional facilities (42.1% [SD = 17.9%]), or for agitation prevalence in dementia (76.5% [SD = 18.4%]). The top 10 behaviors were resisting, wandering, speaking in excessively loud voice, pacing, restlessness, pushing, shouting, complaining, frustration, and using profane language. Four to 17 agitated behaviors coexisted in 53% of people with dementia agitation, indicating high caregiver burden in these RACFs. Automated information extraction might be able to assist with the collection of stroke key performance indicators (KPI). The feasibility of using natural language processing for classification‐based KPI and datetime field extraction was assessed. Using free‐text discharge summaries, random forest models achieved high levels of performance in classification tasks (area under the receiver operator curve 0.95–1.00). Background: Electronic medical records (EMRs) contain valuable information for clinical research, however, the presence of personally identifying information (PII) restricts their use. Anonymisation of PII from EMRs enables clinical information to be shared for research purposes. Since there is limited research relating to the anonymisation of Australian EMRs, the performance of Microsoft Presidio with customisation on clinical documents from an Australian radiation oncology information system (OIS) was evaluated., Methods: A random sample of 300 unstructured free-text clinical documents were extracted from the Prince of Wales Cancer Centre OIS on patients diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck between 2000 and 2017. Anonymisation of clinical text was performed using Microsoft Presidio, implemented in Python programming language. Each clinical document was manually compared pre- and post-anonymisation for the identification and redaction of 13 PII. Model performance was evaluated using three classification criteria; correct, partial, and missed classification, to determine recall, precision, and F1-score. These three metrics were performed under relaxed conditions, where partial classifications were considered correct, and under strict conditions, where only correct classifications were considered correct., Results: A total of 8,713 PII were identified, of which 7,026 (81%) were classified as correct, 850 (10%) as partial, and 837 (9%) as missed. There were 245 instances of incorrect classifications. Evaluation of the model demonstrated an average precision of 0.8921, recall (strict) of 0.8064, F1-score (strict) of 0.8471, recall (relaxed) of 0.9039, and F1-score (relaxed) of 0.8980., Conclusion: This is the first example of an open-source anonymisation model to be customised and tested on clinical documents from an Australian radiation oncology EMR. There is a wealth of information about the characteristics (traits) of organisms within collections of taxonomic descriptions of plants and animals called a 'Flora' or 'Fauna' of a region. However, such knowledge is usually encoded as text paragraphs, and is thus unavailable for immediate analysis. In order to make use of the knowledge embedded in taxon descriptions, text must be organised into standardised, queryable datasets. Despite the recent development of natural language processing (NPL) tools to analyse taxonomic descriptions to extract trait values, the complexity and specificity of these methods currently limits broad application. Accessible and flexible methods for extracting traits across large numbers of taxonomic descriptions are therefore needed. Here we present such an R-based workflow, which can be adapted for use on any organismal group using a language familiar to researchers in the biological sciences. We document a way to (1) assemble tens of thousands of taxonomic descriptions into a standardised format, (2) split the taxon descriptions into different topics, (3) extract trait values as defined by the user, and (4) assign traits described at the genus and family level to lower level taxa to maximise trait coverage. As a case study, we apply the workflow to a collection of taxonomic descriptions drawn from Australia's state and national floras and describe useful techniques for creating workflows and thereby research-grade trait datasets. Using this method, we were able to extract 615,812 trait values from 38 different plant traits. A Ground Coupled Heat Pump (GCHP) is a highly energy efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that utilises the ground as the heat source when heating and as the heat sink when cooling. This paper investigates GCHP systems with horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs) in the rural industry, exemplifying the technology for poultry (chicken) sheds in Australia. This investigation aims to provide an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model that can be used for GCHP design at various locations with different climates. To this extent, a Transient System Simulation Tool (TRNSYS) model for a typical horizontal GHE applied in a rural farm was first verified. Using this model, over 700,000 hourly performance data items were obtained, covering over 80 different yearly loading patterns under three different climate conditions. The simulated performance data was then used to train the ANN. As a result, the trained ANN can predict the performance of GCHP systems with identical (multiple) GHEs even under climatic conditions (and locations) that have not been specifically trained for. Unlike other works, the newly introduced ANN model is accurate even with limited types of input data, with high accuracy (less than 5% error in most cases tested). Background: Diagnosis can often be recorded in electronic medical records (EMRs) as free-text or using a term with a diagnosis code. Researchers, governments, and agencies, including organisations that deliver incentivised primary care quality improvement programs, frequently utilise coded data only and often ignore free-text entries. Diagnosis data are reported for population healthcare planning including resource allocation for patient care. This study sought to determine if diagnosis counts based on coded diagnosis data only, led to under-reporting of disease prevalence and if so, to what extent for six common or important chronic diseases. Methods: This cross-sectional data quality study used de-identified EMR data from 84 general practices in Victoria, Australia. Data represented 456,125 patients who attended one of the general practices three or more times in two years between January 2021 and December 2022. We reviewed the percentage and proportional difference between patient counts of coded diagnosis entries alone and patient counts of clinically validated free-text entries for asthma, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, dementia, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Results: Undercounts were evident in all six diagnoses when using coded diagnoses alone (2.57–36.72% undercount), of these, five were statistically significant. Overall, 26.4% of all patient diagnoses had not been coded. There was high variation between practices in recording of coded diagnoses, but coding for type 2 diabetes was well captured by most practices. Conclusion: In Australia clinical decision support and the reporting of aggregated patient diagnosis data to government that relies on coded diagnoses can lead to significant underreporting of diagnoses compared to counts that also incorporate clinically validated free-text diagnoses. Diagnosis underreporting can impact on population health, healthcare planning, resource allocation, and patient care. We propose the use of phenotypes derived from clinically validated text entries to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis and disease reporting. There are existing technologies and collaborations from which to build trusted mechanisms to provide greater reliability of general practice EMR data used for secondary purposes. Background: Chat Generative Pre‐trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is a freely available online artificial intelligence (AI) program capable of understanding and generating human‐like language. This study assessed veterinary students' perceptions about ChatGPT in education and practice. It compared perceptions about ChatGPT between students who had completed a critical analysis task and those who had not. Methods: This cross‐sectional study surveyed 498 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students at The University of Sydney, Australia. Second‐year DVM students researched a veterinary pathogen and then completed a critical analysis of ChatGPT (version 3.5) output for the same pathogen. A survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model was then delivered to all DVM students from all years of the programme, collecting data using Likert‐style, categorical and free‐text items. Results: Over 75% of the 100 respondents reported having used ChatGPT. The students found ChatGPT's output relevant and practical for their use but perceived it as inaccurate. They perceived ChatGPT output to be more useful for veterinary students than for pet owners or veterinarians. Those who had completed the critical analysis assignment had a more positive view of ChatGPT's practicality for veterinary students but noted its authoritative tone even when delivering inaccurate information. Over 50% of the students agreed that information about tools such as ChatGPT should be included in the veterinary curriculum. Students agreed that veterinarians should embrace AI but disagreed that AI would eventually replace the need for veterinarians. Conclusions: A critical appraisal of outputs from AI tools such as ChatGPT may help prepare future veterinarians for the effective use of these tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is a zoonotic bacteria of global public health significance. The organism has a complex, diverse, and relatively poorly understood animal reservoir but there is increasing evidence that macropods play some part in the epidemiology of Q fever in Australia. The aim of this cross-sectional survey was to estimate the animal- and tissue-level prevalence of coxiellosis amongst eastern grey (Macropus giganteus) and red (Osphranter rufus) kangaroos co-grazing with domestic cattle in a Q fever endemic area in Queensland. Serum, faeces and tissue samples from a range of organs were collected from 50 kangaroos. A total of 537 tissue samples were tested by real-time PCR, of which 99 specimens from 42 kangaroos (84% of animals, 95% confidence interval [CI], 71% to 93%) were positive for the C. burnetii IS1111 gene when tested in duplicate. Twenty of these specimens from 16 kangaroos (32%, 95% CI 20% to 47%) were also positive for the com1 or htpAB genes. Serum antibodies were present in 24 (57%, 95% CI 41% to 72%) of the PCR positive animals. There was no statistically significant difference in PCR positivity between organs and no single sample type consistently identified C. burnetii positive kangaroos. The results from this study identify a high apparent prevalence of C. burnetii amongst macropods in the study area, albeit seemingly with an inconsistent distribution within tissues and in relatively small quantities, often verging on the limits of detection. We recommend Q fever surveillance in macropods should involve a combination of serosurveys and molecular testing to increase chances of detection in a population, noting that a range of tissues would likely need to be sampled to confirm the diagnosis in a suspect positive animal. Data security assurance is crucial due to the increasing prevalence of cloud computing and its widespread use across different industries, especially in light of the growing number of cybersecurity threats. A major and everpresent threat is Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) assaults, which enable even individuals with minimal technical knowledge to conduct ransomware operations. This study provides a new approach for RaaS attack detection which uses an ensemble of deep learning models. For this purpose, the network intrusion detection dataset "UNSWNB15" from the Intelligent Security Group of the University of New South Wales, Australia is analyzed. In the initial phase, the rectified linear unit-, scaled exponential linear unit-, and exponential linear unit-based three separate Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) models are developed. Later, using the combined predictive power of these three MLPs, the RansoDetect Fusion ensemble model is introduced in the suggested methodology. The proposed ensemble technique outperforms previous studieswith impressive performance metrics results, including 98.79% accuracy and recall, 98.85% precision, and 98.80% F1-score. The empirical results of this study validate the ensemble model's ability to improve cybersecurity defenses by showing that it outperforms individual MLPmodels. In expanding the field of cybersecurity strategy, this research highlights the significance of combined deep learning models in strengthening intrusion detection systems against sophisticated cyber threats. Background: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to provide a pooled prevalence estimate of self-reported disordered eating (SRDE) in athletes based on the available literature, and to identify risk factors for their occurrence. Methods: Across ten academic databases, an electronic search was conducted from inception to 7th January 2024. The proportion of athletes scoring at or above predetermined cutoffs on validated self-reporting screening measures was used to identify disordered eating (DE). Subgroup analysis per country, per culture, and per research measure were also conducted. Age, body mass index (BMI), and sex were considered as associated/correlated factors. Results: The mean prevalence of SRDE among 70,957 athletes in 177 studies (132 publications) was 19.23% (17.04%; 21.62%), I2 = 97.4%, τ2 = 0.8990, Cochran's Q p value = 0. Australia had the highest percentage of SRDE athletes with a mean of 57.1% (36.0%-75.8%), while Iceland had the lowest, with a mean of 4.9% (1.2%-17.7%). The SRDE prevalence in Eastern countries was higher than in Western countries with 29.1% versus 18.5%. Anaerobic sports had almost double the prevalence of SRDE 37.9% (27.0%-50.2%) compared to aerobic sports 19.6% (15.2%-25%). Gymnastics sports had the highest SRDE prevalence rate, with 41.5% (30.4%-53.6%) while outdoor sports showed the lowest at 15.4% (11.6%-20.2%). Among various tools used to assess SRDE, the three-factor eating questionnaire yielded the highest SRDE rate 73.0% (60.1%-82.8%). Meta-regression analyses showed that female sex, older age, and higher BMI (all p < 0.01) are associated with higher prevalence rates of SRDE. Conclusion: The outcome of this review suggests that factors specific to the sport affect eating behaviors throughout an athlete's life. As a result, one in five athletes run the risk of developing an eating disorder. Culture-specific and sport-specific diagnostic tools need to be developed and increased attention paid to nutritional deficiencies in athletes. Plain English summary: Disordered eating (DE) refers to eating behaviors that limit food choices, reduce or exaggerate food intake, cause physical discomfort, create a sense of loss of control, or lead to negative emotions like shame or guilt. The DE label does not signify the presence of a diagnosed mental health disorder, but, rather, describes self-reported, regular eating patterns that psychiatrists consider to fall into the at-risk category for an eating disorder. In this review, we performed a search of academic databases to find all relevant studies that measured the frequency of self-reported DE in athletes. We analyzed 177 studies involving over 70,000 athletes in total. In this study, DE was defined as a score above cut-off on validated screening tests for problematic eating behaviors. Our goal was to estimate the prevalence of DE in athletes globally and to determine the factors that increase risk. We found that approximately 1 in 5 athletes (19%) endorsed DE behaviors such as, among others, restrictive dieting, bingeing, and purging. These behaviors were seen most commonly in indoor sports like gymnastics and less commonly in the context of outdoor sports. Rates were highest in female athletes, older athletes, athletes with high body mass index (BMI) scores, and those from Eastern countries and cultures. Australia had the highest rates (over 50%), while rates were lowest in Iceland. We suggest the development of screening tests specifically tailored and applicable to athletes. The visual modeling method enables flexible interactions with rich graphical depictions of data and supports the exploration of the complexities of epidemiological analysis. However, most epidemiology visualizations do not support the combined analysis of objective factors that might influence the transmission situation, resulting in a lack of quantitative and qualitative evidence. To address this issue, we developed a portrait-based visual modeling method called +msRNAer. This method considers the spatiotemporal features of virus transmission patterns and multidimensional features of objective risk factors in communities, enabling portrait-based exploration and comparison in epidemiological analysis. We applied +msRNAer to aggregate COVID-19-related datasets in New South Wales, Australia, combining COVID-19 case number trends, geo-information, intervention events, and expert-supervised risk factors extracted from local government area-based censuses. We perfected the +msRNAer workflow with collaborative views and evaluated its feasibility, effectiveness, and usefulness through one user study and three subject-driven case studies. Positive feedback from experts indicates that +msRNAer provides a general understanding for analyzing comprehension that not only compares relationships between cases in time-varying and risk factors through portraits but also supports navigation in fundamental geographical, timeline, and other factor comparisons. By adopting interactions, experts discovered functional and practical implications for potential patterns of long-standing community factors regarding the vulnerability faced by the pandemic. Introduction: Over 50% of people affected by cancer report unmet support needs. To address unmet information and psychological needs, non-government organisations such as Cancer Councils (Australia) have developed state-based telephone cancer information and support services. Due to competing demands, evidence of the value of these services is needed to ensure that future investment makes the best use of scarce resources. This research aims to determine the costs and broader economic and social value of a telephone support service, to inform future funding and service provision., Methods and Analysis: A codesigned, evaluative social return on investment analysis (SROI) will be conducted to estimate and compare the costs and monetised benefits of Cancer Council Victoria's (CCV) telephone support line, 13 11 20, over 1-year and 3-year benefit periods. Nine studies will empirically estimate the parameters to inform the SROI and calculate the ratio (economic and social value to value invested): step 1 mapping outcomes (in-depth analysis of CCV's 13 11 20 recorded call data; focus groups and interviews); step 2 providing evidence of outcomes (comparative survey of people affected by cancer who do and do not call CCV's 13 11 20; general public survey); step 3 valuing the outcomes (financial proxies, value games); step 4 establishing the impact (Delphi); step 5 calculating the net benefit and step 6 service improvement (discrete choice experiment (DCE), 'what if' analysis). Qualitative (focus groups, interviews) and quantitative studies (natural language processing, cross-sectional studies, Delphi) and economic techniques (willingness-to-pay, financial proxies, value games, DCE) will be applied., Ethics and Dissemination: Ethics approval for each of the studies will be sought independently as the project progresses. The prevalence of cybercrime has emerged as a critical issue in contemporary society because of its far-reaching financial, social, and psychological implications. The negative effects of cyber-attacks extend beyond financial losses and disrupt people's lives on social and psychological levels. Conventional practice involves cyber experts sourcing data from various outlets and applying personal discernment and rational inference to manually formulate cyber intelligence specific to a country. This traditional approach introduces personal bias towards the country-level cyber reports. However, this paper reports a novel approach where country-level cyber intelligence is automatically generated with artificial intelligence (AI), employing cyber-related social media posts and open-source cyber-attack statistics. Our innovative cyber threat intelligence solution examined 37,386 tweets from 30,706 users in 54 languages using sentiment analysis, translation, term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF), latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), N-gram, and Porter stemming. Moreover, the presented study utilized 238,220 open-intelligence cyber-attack statistics from eight different web links, to create a historical cyber-attack dataset. Subsequently, AI-based algorithms, like convolutional neural network (CNN), and exponential smoothing were used for AI-driven insights. With the confluence of the voluminous Twitter-derived data and the array of open-intelligence cyber-attack statistics, orchestrated by the AI-driven algorithms, the presented approach generated seven-dimensional cyber intelligence for Australia and China in complete automation. Finally, the topic analysis on the cyber-related social media messages revealed seven main themes for both Australia and China. This methodology possesses the inherent capability to effortlessly engender cyber intelligence for any country, employing an autonomous modality within the realm of pervasive computational platforms. The hospitality and tourism sector has long played a significant role in Australia's economy, especially in regional areas. Due to the onslaught of COVID-19, numerous businesses have experienced lockdowns, restrictions, and closures due to the fact that people's activity in restaurants, shopping centers, and recreational destinations was restricted, and many other places went into hibernation. After about 2 years since the outbreak, businesses in this sector are gradually starting to reopen and revitalize themselves, but in order to have better decision support about the future of this sector, thus being able to plan, businesses are suffering from an effective analytics solution due to the lack of broken data trends. Starting from fresh day-to-day real-time big data, the study aims to develop a new data analytics model, adopting the design science research methodology, which can provide invaluable options and techniques to make prediction easier from immediate past datasets. This study introduces an innovative design artifact as a big data solution for hospitality managers to utilize analytics for predictive strategic decision-making in post-COVID situation. The artifact can also be generalized for other sectors with tailoring aspects which are subject to further studies. The proposed artifact is then compared with other design artifacts related to big data solutions where it outperforms them in terms of comprehensiveness. Invasive plants seriously impact our environmental, agricultural and forestry assets, and the ornamental plant trade is a major introduction pathway. The variety and extent of the ornamental plant trade is growing in reach and is increasingly facilitated by the internet (i.e., through e-commerce). A lack of surveillance and regulation of e-commerce has resulted in invasive species being widely traded on these platforms. Here, we investigated the extent of illegal trade in invasive plant species in Australia by collecting advertisements found on a popular public e-commerce website. Across a 12-month period we collected a total of 235,162 plant advertisements. From 10,000 of these advertisements (4.25% of total advertisements) we found 155 plant taxa advertised online that were prohibited to trade in at least one Australian State or Territory (12.5% of Australia's total prohibited plant taxa). We detected 1,415 instances of invasive plants advertised, of which 411 breached local jurisdictional (i.e., State or Territory) laws. Opuntia cacti and invasive aquatic plants were traded in the greatest quantities. A variety of uses for plants prohibited to trade were reported by the sellers, with aquatic uses being the most popular (i.e., water filtering and habitat for aquatic animals). We used generalised linear mixed-effects models to test the effect of prohibiting the sale of invasive plants on the quantity and price of online advertisements. Despite Australia's strict internal biosecurity regulations, we found that trade prohibitions had no influence on the quantity and price of trade in illegal invasive plants. Given this, and the extent of illegal invasive plants traded, we believe increased monitoring and regulation of online plant trade is warranted. We demonstrate that targeted searches using string matching is an effective tool for detecting e-commerce trade of invasive species. However, to obtain the most optimal outcomes, regulations should be coupled with increased cooperation from e-commerce platforms and public awareness campaigns. Future weed risk assessments should consider online trade as a key factor in the long-distance dispersal and propagule pressure of a plant. We explored the utility of chatbots for improving data quality arising from collection via sonline surveys. Three-hundred Australian adults sampled via Prolific Academic were randomized across chatbot-supported or unassisted online questionnaire conditions. The questionnaire comprised validated measures, along with challenge items formulated to be confusing yet aligned with the validated targets. The chatbot condition provided optional assistance with item clarity via a virtual support agent. Chatbot use and user satisfaction were measured through session logs and user feedback. Data quality was operationalized as between-group differences in relationships among validated and challenge measures. Findings broadly supported chatbot utility for online surveys, showing that most participants with chatbot access utilized it, found it helpful, and demonstrated modestly improved data quality (vs. controls). Absence of confusion for one challenge item is believed to have contributed to an underestimated effect. Findings show that assistive chatbots can enhance data quality, will be utilized by many participants if available, and are perceived as beneficial by most users. Scope constraints for this pilot study are believed to have led to underestimated effects. Future testing with longer-form questionnaires incorporating expanded item difficulty may further understanding of chatbot utility for survey completion and data quality., (© 2021. Many rural areas experience population stagnation or decline from out‐migration with corresponding economic downturns. This is the case for the Northern Territory in Australia, a vast and sparsely populated jurisdiction. Its government has long sought to encourage stronger population growth but its population is young and highly transient, leading to high staff turn‐overs and challenges for industries and government to attract families and skilled workers. Place‐based factors such as job opportunities, access to essential services or environmental amenities influence satisfaction and migration decisions. The aim of this study was to understand why people might stay or move away through analysing responses to two open‐text questions on the best and worst aspect of living in the Northern Territory. Over 3500 valid responses were analysed using machine learning‐based unsupervised topic modelling which uncovered latent clusters. Forty‐four percent of positive aspects were clustered into lifestyle factors, while negative aspects clustered around high living costs and crime. Some aspects, such as the weather and distance to other places were discussed as both positive and negative aspects. Topics discussed by respondents could be directly related to their intention to leave the Northern Territory, and also to specific individual's demographic characteristics providing insights for policies focused on attracting and retaining population. The use of unsupervised text mining in population research is rare and this study verifies its use to deliver objective and nuanced results generated from a large qualitative data set. While there are no new frauds, internet technology provides new opportunities for fraudsters by facilitating volumes of attacks that law enforcement then struggles to address. Moreover, since context can affect how potential victims respond to frauds, crisis context influences how fraudsters design frauds. This article assesses fraudsters' fraud design strategies during two external crisis events that impacted Australia: The Black Summer Bushfires that occurred from September 2019 to March 2020 and the onset and first year of the COVID-19 pandemic that occurred from January 2020 through January 2021. Targets, during these crises, were more likely to be vulnerable according to Steinmetz's model victim for social engineering framework. This study shows that, in both crises, fraudsters deployed the social engineering techniques of "authority" and "scarcity," techniques that are more likely to be successful based solely on initial contact. Fraudsters designed their requests to be easily actioned and crafted their scams to reference very recent events as the external crisis events evolved. Thus, they targeted broad audiences with minimal personal involvement. Furthermore, this study shows that fraudsters, when disseminating their scams via social media outlets, attempted to build "social proof" to expand their potential victim pool to include the marks' social circles. Highly sophisticated capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have skyrocketed its popularity across many industry sectors globally. The public sector is one of these. Many cities around the world are trying to position themselves as leaders of urban innovation through the development and deployment of AI systems. Likewise, increasing numbers of local government agencies are attempting to utilise AI technologies in their operations to deliver policy and generate efficiencies in highly uncertain and complex urban environments. While the popularity of AI is on the rise in urban policy circles, there is limited understanding and lack of empirical studies on the city manager perceptions concerning urban AI systems. Bridging this gap is the rationale of this study. The methodological approach adopted in this study is twofold. First, the study collects data through semi-structured interviews with city managers from Australia and the US. Then, the study analyses the data using the summative content analysis technique with two data analysis software. The analysis identifies the following themes and generates insights into local government services: AI adoption areas, cautionary areas, challenges, effects, impacts, knowledge basis, plans, preparedness, roadblocks, technologies, deployment timeframes, and usefulness.
